The United States continues to be the world’s leading producer and consumer of diatomite. Production of diatomite in the United States during 2004 was estimated to be 635 kt (700,000 st). This was a 2-percent increase from 2003. The value of processed diatomite in the U.S. was about $164 million in 2004. Production was from six companies with 13 processing facilities in four states. Nevada and California were the principal producing states. They accounted for about78 percent of the U.S. production during 2004. U.S. diatomite exports were about 136 kt (150,000 st). Imports were negligible.

Abosso Goldfields Limited has been optimizing the comminution circuit at the Damang Mine Operation for the treatment of 100% primary ore. The optimization process started at a base rate of 343 tph when treating primary crushed primary ore, and was increased to above 600 tph with partially crushed primary ore. Abosso Goldfields engaged Orway Mineral Consultants (OMC) to assist with the optimization process in 2009 and the two companies have been working together since, to further refine the process. Continuous improvement was achieved through crushing circuit modifications, changes in operating processes and grinding control system utilization. This paper discusses the improvements developed for the increase in milling capacity and improvements in final product size.

"INTRODUCTION One of the various phases of the work by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, in its endeavors to minimize the hazards that attend coal mining, is the investigation of electrical motor-driven machinery. The object of this investigation is to foster the development of explosion-proof machines for use in gassy mines. This investigation is conducted under the provisions of Schedule 2C, which prescribes the inspection and tests made upon motors, controllers, and other electrical parts to determine their ability to withstand internal explosion without discharge of any flames. The method of conducting these inspections and tests is described in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 305, Inspection and Testing of Mine-Type Electrical Equipment for Permissibility, published in 1929. Formal approval of a machine for use in gassy mines is not granted by the Bureau of Mines until the machine is found to comply with the requirements, including inspection and test. When it is approved it is entitled to classification as a ""permissible"" machine.The high regard in which machines approved by the U.S. Bureau of Mines are held by engineers of other countries is attested by the growing number of shipments of permissible equipment; to other nations, including Australia, Russia, Norway, Japan, and Manchuria."

Sinter has been used as part of the metallic charge in large-scale blast furnaces for many years with the well-known benefits in terms of productivity and fuel consumption. However, because of the high investment in a conventional sinter plant, small blast furnaces and the associated integrated mini steel plants have not taken the advantages of using sinter. Recently KTS Korf Tecnologia Siderurgica, a division of Mannesmann Demag Ltda in Brazil, has developed a mini sinter plant for which the investment is compatible with small blast furnaces. Consequently, it is of great interest to evaluate the economical impact of using sinter in such small-scale integrated steel plants. In order to compare two alternatives, ie 100 per cent ore and 70 per cent sinter in the blast furnace burden, mass and heat balances for the entire operation from sinter plant through the blast furnace and EOF-based melting shop, were performed to evaluate the final production cost of the liquid steel. It was found that, depending on the sinter feed price, substantial savings can be obtained with the use of sinter.

No one envisioned at the time that the Coeur d’Alene Mining District would become known as the “Silver Valley” and produce more than 37.2 kt (1.2 billion oz) of silver. Or that Hecla would become the United States’ largest primary silver producer and the last of the pioneer mining companies from this illustrious mining district.What is the origin of the name “Hecla?”That will forever be a bit of a mystery. Some say it was named for an Icelandic volcano. Or that it was the foresight of James Toner, who staked the original claim, that it would go so deep, fulfilling the medieval folklore definition of the word ‘Hekla’ which is the ‘Gateway to Hell.’ I kind of like that one as the Lucky Friday Mine is almost 3.2 km (2 miles) below the surface. It has operated for more than 70 years and has all the markings of being one of only a handful of mines that will exceed 100 years of operations.Is there a common theme, or thread throughout the 125 years?Yes, Hecla has always had a solid core of high-quality and long-lived assets, positioning the company to survive times of low prices and reap the rewards when cycles turn and higher prices are realized. But it is not just assets. Hecla has extraordinary expertise that gives us the perspective of how to acquire, explore, develop and operate mining assets, particularly underground. Hecla is one of the few companies to acquire assets in the last five to six years and we did not have to write down the value of them, which means we paid a fair price for the asset despite the metals price reductions that followed the purchase. And our culture has given us the persistence to develop mines and complete projects despite lower prices. For almost a decade we have been advancing the #4 Shaft project at the Lucky Friday. We will complete this project this year, positioning the mine to operate for decades. We have elected to spend capital on San Sebastian (Durango, Mexico) and Casa Berardi (La Sarre, Quebec, Canada) to start a new mine and increase production, respectively. And we are spending money on new techniques, new equipment and innovations to our operations. Our insistence is on developing for the future, and our persistence in doing so is in contrast to many companies that are reducing investment and shrinking production"

A magnetic anisotropy sensor is used for nondestructive measurement of stress on surfaces of a ferromagnetic material, such as steel. The sensor is built on the principle of the magneto-strictive effect in which changes in magnetic permeability due to deformation of the material is measured in a nondestructive manner, which then can be translated into the absolute values of stresses existing on the surface. This technique was applied to measure stresses of H-beams used in tunnels. The results show that this method could be one of the promising technologies for non-destructive stress measurement for safe construction of underground structures. Une sonde magnétique anisotropique est utilisée pour des mesures non-destructives de stress sur la surface d' unmétal ferromagnétique, comme l'acier. La sonde est construite sur le principe de l'effet magnéto-strictif dans lequel les changements dans la perméabilité magnétique due à la déformation du metal est mesurée avec une manière non-destructive, qui peut être alors traduite en valeurs absolues des stress existants à la surface. Cette technique a été appliquée pour la mesure de stress des poutres en H utilisées dans les tunnels. Les résultats montrent que cette méthode peut être l'une des technologies promet tantes concernant les mesures non-destructives de stress pour des constructions sûres de strcutures souterraines. Ein magnetischer Anisotropie-Sensor wird für die zerstörungsfreie Messung von Spannungen an Oberflächenvon ferromagnetischen Materialien wie z.B. Stahl verwendet. Der Sensor kann Änderungen in der magnetischen Durchlässigkeit auf Grund von Verformungen des Materials erkennen, die dann in Absolutwerte der Spannungen an der Oberfläche umgerechnet werden können. Die Methode wurde auf Messung von Spannungenvon H-Balken in Tunnels angewendet. Ergebnisse zeigen, dass dies eine vielversprechende Methode für diezerstörungefreie Messung im Tiefbau ist.

Lumwana is an open pit Copper mine located in the Northwestern Province of Zambia approximately 80 km west from the provincial capital of Solwezi, approximately 300 km northwest from the Copperbelt and 700 km northwest from the national capital of Lusaka. The mine has two major Copper deposits: Malundwe and Chimiwungo. Copper mineralization includes Chalcopyrite, Bornite and Chalcocite. In addition to Copper, these deposits also contain the undesirable element Uranium contained in vein hosted and disseminated Uranite. The processing plant was designed using conventional technologies: semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball mill for grinding, and mechanical cells for rougher and cleaner flotation. Soon after commissioning in early 2009, it was recognised that two stages of conventional cleaning were unable to produce plant final Copper concentrates with the desired Uranium grades. Studies have shown that a significant quantity of liberated and fine Uranium particles (up to 80-90%) is recovered with the concentrate by entrainment. Lumwana Operations sought the use of the Jameson Cell technology after observing successful implementation at other sites in rectifying similar issues. In late 2009, Jameson Cell pilot-plant test work was conducted at the site and this quickly led to the installation of a full-scale B5400/18 model into the existing cleaner circuit. Inclusion of the Jameson Cell resulted in the plant being able to effectively produce clean and saleable concentrate with Uranium contents consistently below acceptable levels. Initially designed to be used as a cleaner scalper cell at the head of the existing conventional cell circuit, subsequent operational issues with the existing recleaner cells forced reconfiguration of the cleaner circuit and reintroduced the Jameson Cell for the recleaning duty. This paper reports the Lumwana Operation from the first two years of operation where it struggled to produce a saleable concentrate with Uranium grades below 150 ppm, which is the maximum allowable limit set out in the smelting contracts, to steps taken in the subsequent years to implement a satisfactory solution. The plant can now consistently produce a clean Copper concentrate with Uranium grades well below 130 ppm and the overall improvements implemented at site have seen the overall plant recovery improve by 1.3%.

"The geology of the Ore Fault Ni-Cu deposit has been reinterpreted in the light of recent studies of the geology of the Neoarchean Bird River Sill Complex and the occurrence of economic Ni-Cu and Zn-Cu-Ag mineralization. The Ni-Cu sulfides are hosted by the lower of two parallel NNW-trending and moderately W-dipping mafic-ultramafic intrusions related to the Bird River Sill Complex. The bod¬ies intruded a bimodal volcanic suite consisting of weakly deformed mafic flows and felsic pyroclastic rocks. The mafic volcanic rocks are geochemically related to the MORB-type rocks of the Lamprey Falls Formation, and the felsic volcanic rocks are related to arc-type rocks of the Peterson Creek Formation. The original pyroxene- and olivine-dominated mineralogy of the sills has been replaced by variable ser¬pentine-amphibole-talc-carbonate assemblages.The Ni-Cu sulfide assemblage exhibits textures and geochemical signatures typical of orthomagmatic sulfide mineralization. The sulfide minerals are associated with cumulate layers of magnetic ferrochromite that range in thickness from a few to tens of centimeters. A later event of Zn-Cu-Ag sulfide mineralization associated with quartz veining and garnet-chlorite alteration along a fault that strikes north, dips vertically, and cuts all rock types. The mineralized fault is cut by the NE-trending Peterson Creek shear zone. Where the Ni-Cu and Zn-Cu-Ag mineralized zones intersect, remnant magmatic features such as amphibolite or cumulate ferrochromite bands occur within quartz veins or local chlorite alteration. The mixed zones contain a very unusual polymetallic assemblage of Ni, Cu, Zn, Ag, and platinum group elements (PGE)."

Slope monitoring has been an important issue in static terrestrial lidar for some time. Several solutions for monitoring the progress of a slide have been devised over the years. All of these solutions have required users to be in the field operating the lidar equipment. This paper presents a new system developed using the Optech ILRIS-HD or ILRIS-LR lidar and the scripting language of PolyWorks to produce an autonomous slope monitoring system. This system has proven invaluable in detecting and alerting mine workers to potential danger within their mine sites. It has already been deployed in two mine sites and is scheduled to be installed at a third.

To evaluate methane explosion hazards in longwall coal mines, a CFD model was developed along with a 1/40th-scale, optically accessible model of an underground longwall coal mining section. In this project, CFD models assisted in the design of the physical model to ensure specifications were met for accurately representing the scaling physics as well as to assist in narrowing the experimental matrix and identifying key locations for sensor placement to measure velocity, pressure, and gas concentrations. This research will help develop strategies for methane monitoring that prevent methane ignitions and explosions in longwall coal operations.

"This circular is part III of a series of papers reviewing the literature on air conditioning in mines, with particular reference to the health, safety, and efficiency of miners.4/ It deals with theoretical and practical methods of conditioning air in mines to correct or alleviate the health hazards described in parts I and II and discusses the results attained by some of the systems now in use in various-parts of the world.The principal conditions to be corrected or alleviated are the chemical qualities of mine air (especially when contaminated with toxic and noxious gases and dusts) and the physical qualities (abnormal mine temperatures and humidities) that emanate from various sources in underground workings. Air motion and barometric pressure are physical qualities also to be considered.From the standpoint of health, knowledge of the composition of the air, or atmosphere, in mines and other underground operations is of prime importance. Suitable control measures or plans of procedure to combat or eliminate the hazards from contaminants must be based upon accurate information obtained by the selection and use of proper methods of sampling and analyzing mine atmospheres (1).5/Conditioning air is one of the most essential factors to be considered in any underground workings, not only from the standpoint of health and safety but also with regard to efficiency and productivity. Without modern air-conditioning, the war's great demand upon the copper mines could hardly have been met, as the mechanical refrigeration cooled off sweltering holes in less than a month, whereas in the past it was standard practice to blow air through the tunnels for 3 years or so until they were cooled.This paper discusses methods of determining the chemical and physical qualities of mine air and their control. The Martha epithermal Au-Ag deposit contains multiple generations of quartz veins with a range of textures. We examined: +        vein textures, +        crosscutting vein relationships, and +        the paragenetic sequence within the pit walls as well as a wide range of hand specimens. Samples include host rock, breccia, and veins, but these groups are not distinct; instead, they form a continuum.   Veins at Martha mine show a wide range of textures on a local scale; these textures also change significantly over both the lateral and vertical extent of the pit. Common textures include crustiform bands, comb quartz, colloform bands, platy quartz, massive quartz, drusy quartz, sedimentary textures and brecciation.   Vein grades relate to textures. Many textures, including crustiform, platy, cherty, and sedimentary textures display predominantly low grades, but some textures are linked with high grades, such as ginguro, massive and comb quartz where they are associated with visible base metal sulphides and/or electrum. Host rocks and most breccias are low grade, as most samples contain <2 ppm Au.

In this study, the cobalt oxide precursor was prepared in open-style reactor in the condition of high reactant concentration, and then the precursor was decomposed to obtain the cobalt oxides (Co3O4). The effects of some factors on the cobalt precipitation, the particle size and size distribution, and the micro-morphology were addressed. The factors studied include cobalt concentration, initial pH of solution, temperature and time for the reaction, the charge amount of urea, and the temperature for decomposition. It is determined that the precursor particle is in the chemical composition of Co2(OH)3Cl with fine crystalline. By calcinations under proper conditions, the mono-dispersed cobalt oxide particles were prepared with fine crystalline, about 2 µ m in particle size and regular shape in morphology.

Residents of Maxwell Hill, a suburb of Beckley, West Virginia, reported from January until March of 1988 a series of earth tremors. The tremors rattled dishes, and the noises associated with tremors were sometimes loud enough to wake people at night. These events were puzzling because Beckley is in an area of low seismic activity. Maxwell Hill is located above abandoned coal mines, though no direct subsidence damage to surface structures has been documented. A research program was initiated to determine whether subsurface ground movements associated with the abandoned mines could be responsible for the seismic activity experienced at the surface. A hypothesis is proposed which states that seismic disturbances can be caused by abandoned mine failure when two conditions are met. First, some instability must exist at the mine level. The most likely cause of instability is the failure of pillars of coal that were left for support at the time of mining. Second, subsurface movements can result in significant seismic activity only when the rock above the mine contains at least one very strong and brittle layer that is prone to fail violently through rupture or fault slip movement. Analysis of the data indicates that both hypothesized conditions for mine-related seismicity appear to have been satisfied in the case of Maxwell Hill. It has therefore been concluded that the earth tremors experienced by Maxwell Hill residents probably are related to the abandoned mines. Analysis of the potential magnitude of these events indicates that they are unlikely to cause significant surface danlage. The probability that future events will disturb the residence of Maxwell Hill should be quite low based on the identified mechanism.

In the mining industry, drilling accuracy has a significant effect on the economy of operations. In this paper, results from the Nkana Division of the former Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines are presented. For the stope investigated, it was found that the extra operational costs alone were 462% of the planned costs! Clearly, there is more than good reason to pay attention to drilling of good quality holes.

The Round Hill gold-scheelite deposit is located three kilometres from Macraes Flat and approximately 60 kilometres due north of Dunedin, New Zealand. A mining feasibility study is currently being undertaken on the deposit by BHP Minerals (New Zealand) Limited, who are the managers and operators of a Joint Venture with Home Reef Mining Limited. BHP has a 70 per cent equity in the project area.

The outstanding trend in the graphite market is the fast-growing demand for cheaper qualities of graphite and the declining consumption of the more expensive varieties. The manufacture of graphite, crucibles for melting metals was one of the earliest applications of the-mineral and for many years constituted by far the leading source of demand. In later, years, however; and more especially since the Great War, the increasing demand for high-grade steel ingots and castings instead of enlarging crucible sales has permanently curtailed the domestic demand for crucibles because it has hastened the introduction of electric, oil or gas fired furnaces to replace the older types requiring pots to hold the metal during melting. While there has been a substantial increase in the use of graphite for miscellaneous refractories the total consumption for such purposes is too small to offset the shrinkage in demand for crucible making, and though it consumes the better and hence more expensive grades of crystalline flake graphite, it does not call so insistently for the still costlier Ceylon grades.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Thomson Orogen is a large but poorly understood element of Queensland geology. Extensive cover conceals the Thomson Orogen at depth, thus limiting studies to a small number of surface exposures. Previous studies of the northern Thomson Orogen have been restricted to the largest of these exposures in the Anakie Inlier and Charters Towers Province. Less extensive exposures, including Mt McLaren in east-central Queensland, are largely overlooked and poorly documented. Fieldwork suggests that Mt McLaren is a west-tilted fault block of Thomson Orogen metasediments that are at least 2200 m thick. The substantial thickness of these sediments (which we have named the Mt McLaren Formation) and the consistent shallow marine facies throughout the block suggest deposition in an actively subsiding basin. Initial dating of detrital zircons places deposition of the Mt McLaren Formation in the Late Cambrian to Early Ordovician, allowing correlations with formations of similar composition and age in the nearby Anakie Inlier and Charters Towers Province. Both of these areas have a long history of mining and exploration for gold and base metals, suggesting that correlation of basement sequences across these areas could be beneficial for exploration models of the Thomson Orogen as well as for tectonic models of eastern Australia.CITATION:Lee, M, Verdel, C, Welsh, K and Oorloff, A, 2015. The work involved compilation and description of pertinent factors relating to the physical features and operational characteristics of the facility, including information on embankment construction practices; investigation and research of the general geologic and seismicity characteristics of the site and vicinity; limited field exploration and materials sampling and testing at the site; installation and limited monitoring of piezometers, surface movement markers, and slope indicator casing; limited laboratory testing of materials to evaluate the basic index and engineering properties of the embankment and tailings materials; selected engineering analyses of the embankment for various types of potential "failure" conditions; and includes appendices.

The search for modem casting plant concepts today focuses more and more on the harmonisation and optimisation of overall concept lines to obtain a continuous quality control and reduce the cost of production (Figure 1). Fin I As far as continuous casting plant concepts are concerned, this specifically requires an optimal adaptation and flexible operation when converting liquid steel into a directly processable product without any in-between treatment. Continuous casters need to fully satisfy the requirements of both the upstream steelmaking facilities as well as the downstream rolling facilities.
