A study was conducted for the AEC to determine the feasibility of constructing an unsupported 315 foot diameter spherical cavity at a depth of 2,700 feet in a salt dome. A cavity of this size and shape has never been attempted. It was determined that the three basic essentials for solution mining; adequate salt, fresh water, and a means of brine disposal were available at the Tatum Salt Dome in Lamar County, Mississippi. Assuming a large, unsupported mined opening of the size and at the depth required would remain stable, the most practical method of providing the cavity using solution mining techniques is by use of a movable blanket of air to control the water level to properly shape the cavity while removing the insolubles either with jetting or by conventional mining methods. It is estimated that, using the jetting method of insolubles removal, the cavity can be constructed in 24 months for approximately $7 million. Using conventional mining techniques to remove the insolubles and shape the final cavity, it is estimated that the cavity can be constructed in 36 months for approximately $12.6 million.

The Bayswater seam of the Singleton Coal Measures is discussed in relation to its field occurrence and related li~hotype profiles. The seam is correlated throughout widely separated areas of the Hunter Valley with the Farrells Creek seam at Howick, Broke seam at Broke, and Saddlers Creek seam at Mt. Arthur. The unusual features of composition of the seam in relation to adjacent seams is dealt with in terms of the seam environment, particular attention being given to the sandstone at the base of .the seam. Petrographic and other data are used to support the arguments submitted.

Pyrometallurgy has played a very important role in southern Africa for at least four centuries. It continues to do so, and recent years have seen many exciting developments in pyrometallurgical technology. The wonderfully diverse rich mineral deposits in this area of the world have provided some unique opportunities for industrial processes to be established. The ?Southern African Pyrometallurgy 2006? conference was set up to showcase southern African pyrometallurgical operations, and to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas between people working at various types of smelters. Papers have been obtained from a wide variety of pyrometallurgical plants in southern Africa. These descriptions of plant operations (as well as some history, and highlights of current work) will provide useful reference information for some time to come. Contributions are also included from universities, research organizations, and engineering companies, so that the full spectrum of pyrometallurgical activities can be covered. The plant descriptions will be published on a website, where they can be updated as and when required, with the eventual goal of having a description of every smelter in the region. The conference venue was selected to be the 'Cradle of Humankind' world heritage area, about 40 km from Johannesburg. Not only does this keep the conference within easy reach of the city and yet far enough out into the countryside to allow people to focus on the conference, it is also within easy reach of many pyrometallurgical plants. There is a particular significance to the choice of location, in that the Swartkrans area close to the Sterkfontein Caves is the site of the earliest evidence of the deliberate controlled use of fire by human beings (about 1.3 million years ago), and this is obviously a necessary precursor to pyrometallurgy. The area also lends itself to a very wide range of outdoor, social, and cultural activities to supplement the technical content of the programme. It is hoped that activities such as a hot air balloon safari and visits to the world-renowned Sterkfontein Caves and Wonder Cave will help to make the conference a memorable one for those able to attend. I trust that the ongoing value of the papers and presentations will make all the hard work of the many contributors most worthwhile.

Born in Bothaville (OFS) on the 26th August 1919, Daniel G. Krige grew up in Krugersdorp on the West Rand. Hematriculated from Monument High School in Krugersdorpin 1934 at the age of 15 and graduated with a B.Sc. (Eng.)degree in mining engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand at the end of 1938 (age 19). In 1938 he joined Anglo Transvaal where he worked on a number of gold mines until 1943, gaining a wide range of valuable practical experience in surveying, sampling and ore valuation. He then joined the Government Mining Engineer’s Department where he worked for 8 years during which time he participated in the uranium negotiations with the British and American authorities and designed the uranium pricing formula for the contracts which led to the establishment of South Africa's profitable uranium industry in the early 1950s. During the same period he began his pioneering work in the application of mathematical statistics to the valuation of new gold mines using a limited number of boreholes and of ore reserves for existing mines. His early papers in the application of mathematical statistics, some republished in French, created world-wide interest that led to the development of the science and concepts that surround the spatial evaluation of mineral resources and reserves known as geostatistics. This technique has contributed to improved ore evaluation techniques as well as the reduction of the financial risks associated with investment in mining enterprises. Furthermore, it led to the recognition of his contributions to the evaluations of mineral deposits through the coining of the term ‘kriging’ that is used to describe a spatial mineral evaluation process known and practised in international mining circles. He continued his work in geostatistics throughout his career as Group Financial Engineer of the Anglovaal Group until his retirement in1981 and afterwards for ten years as Professor of Mineral Economics at the Witwatersrand University. He is still active as a consultant and is a registered Professional Engineer. He has published some 90 technical papers both locally and overseas, some in Russia, and has lectured and participated in international congresses in many countries. His contributions were recognized by the Witwatersrand University through the award of the D.Sc. (Eng.) degree in1963, by three honorary degrees (from the universities of Pretoria, UNISA and Moscow State Mining University), by many awards from the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the International Association for Mathematical Geology, Die Suid Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns, the SME of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the International APCOM Council in1999, the University of Antofagasta in Chile, and by the South African President (Order for Meritorious Service, Class 1, Gold). He has served on various Government committees, notably that for State Aid for gold mines (1967/8) and designed the State Aid formula which enabled many mines to survive a period of low gold prices; also various taxation committees, and the mining mission to Iran in 1974. He is a fellow and/or honorary life member of various technical societies locally and overseas, including the Royal Society of South Africa. During the period in the Government service he also handled several of the post-war lease applications in the Free State and Klerksdorp goldfields. The fact that decisions on new gold mines of critical importance to the State and the economy as a whole, were being taken on a limited number of drillholes without any scientific analysis of the risks of failure, stimulated him to start basic research into ore evaluation. His approach was based on the application of Mathematical Statistics to these problems, an approach of which very little was known world-wide at that stage but which had already been initiated in South Africa by Sichel via the lognormal frequency distribution model. In Krige's 1951 paper published in the Journal of the Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa he covered the statistical explanation of the conditional biases in ore block valuations and stimulated the use by several gold mines of regression corrections for routine ore reserve valuations, a technique which, in effect, was the first use on an elementary basis of what is now known as kriging. His 1952 paper introduced, inter alia the basic geostatistical concepts of ‘support’, ‘spatial structure’,’ selective mining units’ and ‘grade-tonnage curves’. His 1951 paper was based on his M.Sc. (Eng.) thesis submitted in the Department of Mining Engineering to the University of the Witwatersrand, and expounded his pioneering work in geostatistics in more detail. His early research papers that had stimulated interest in several mining circles overseas, were republished in French in1955, resulting in a major research effort by French mining engineers in this field. This, in turn, led to the establishment of the now world-renowned French school of ore evaluation in Fontainebleau, Le Centre de Geostatistique de l’École des Mines de Paris. The general distribution of metal deposits in the Canadian Cordillera can be related to its tectonic evolution. The Canadian Cordillera is naturally divisible into five longitudinal tectonic belts within which rocks are broadly similar in type, age and history. From west to east they are the Insular, Coast Crystalline, Intermontane, Omineca and Eastern Marginal belts. Seven classes of metal deposits in the Canadian Cordillera are defined and their characteristics described. These classes are skarn, porphyry, massive sulphide, stratiform, magmatic, copper in basic lavas, and vein deposits. Maps showing the distribution of medal and metal-group concentrations serve to illustrate the relations in space and time between mineralization and geologic evolution.

During the SME Board of Directors’ midyear meeting in Monterey, CA Aug. 25, I discussed trends in the construction aggregates industry. Many construction-material suppliers may not have yet fully internalized the changes that are taking place. But the changes are significant. And they have shifted the focus in the aggregates industry from “assets” to “people and innovation.” Construction-material suppliers serve many customers. A typical quarrying operation at Graniterock would have more than 1,000 customers, mostly civil engineering contractors. Along with the push toward people and innovation, there is increased emphasis on vertical integration from aggregates to ready-mix concrete and hot mix asphalt, to final construction. If a company is not vertically integrated, it will at least have strong partnerships with other firms, to deliver a high-quality finished project on time.

In recent years development of instruments and equipment for determining subsurface pressures and temperatures in. gas and oil wells has made it feasible to obtain information that eras not available in the past on many gas-production problems. The material presented in this report illustrates particularly the value of subsurface-temperature data in the study of subsurface leakage from gas wells. An abnormal decline in the shut-in pressure of the Lone Star Gasoline Co. A. Jones No. 1 gas well in the southern part of the Buffalo (Tex.) field was observed during an interval when a negligible volume of gas bras being withdrawn from the reservoir. Wellhead-pressure readings indicated that the shut-in pressure of the well declined from 2,295 pounds per square inch gage on February 3, 1937, to. 1,445 on February 12, 1935. Tests conducted by engineers of the Lone Star Gas Co. suggested that the subnormal pressure gaged on February 12, 1938, probably was not caused by a head of liquid in the well.

Even though most major operating companies in the minerals industry have Board-level endorsed sustainability principles and objectives, design engineers typically have no mechanism that allows them to implement those objectives in their work. In addition, the existing project management systems do not readily deliver the innovative solutions needed to address key sustainability issues, such as those related to significantly reduced carbon emissions, minimal environmental impacts, and maintaining the societal ‘licence to operate’. SUSOP® (SUStainable OPerations) is an approach for the integration of sustainable development principles into the design of mineral processes, which has been developed through the Co-operative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (CSRP). Somewhat analogous to the well entrenched HAZOP (Hazard and Operability) studies, SUSOP® is a holistic, systematic and rigorous mechanism for identifying and assessing sustainability opportunities and risks at each stage of project development - from corporate planning, through design and operation, to decommissioning and rehabilitation – without compromising financial rigour. SUSOP® was developed, tested and enhanced through its application to real case studies in the minerals industry. This development path provided significant insights into the process of identifying and evaluating opportunities for improving an operation’s contribution to sustainability and its long-term business case.This paper will discuss the need for a methodical approach for integrating sustainability principles into mineral processing plant design, present the key elements of SUSOP®, and outline its development path through real case studies. In addition, the reasons why such an approach will have growing importance into the future will be raised.

The effect of polyelectrolyte flocculants on the de-watering of a tailing suspension of very fine clay was investigated.Sedimentation and filtration experiments were carried out in the labqratory to characterise the de-watering properties of the tailing. The results were used to calculate the effect of flocculant additions on the drainage and vaporation components of the de-watering of a clay suspension ponded on to a sand drainage bed.A flocculant increased the drainage rate, but decreased the volume of water that could be removed by drainage leaving more water to be lost by evaporation.The sorptivity values measured in the laboratory were used in the de-watering equation previously established for the tailing to estimate the effect of flocculant additions on the time required to de-water the suspension from 18.2 to 60 per cent solids w/w. The calculated de-watering times were found to increase or decrease depending on the volume of water removed by drainage and the prevailing evaporation rate.

This paper describes a mobile laboratory developed specifically for nickel prospecting, and which was designed to be operated by sub-professional staff in remote areas independently of established laboratories. An atomic absorption spectrophotometric procedure was used to determine nickel, cobalt, lead, zinc, and copper ID latentIc and sulphIde samples, with a detection limit better than 25 µg/g for all elements. The procedure was applicable to both soil and drill samples and the accuracy of the procedure, which was ±5 per cent relative at the 1,000 µg/g level was sufficient for the preliminary assessment of mineralized samples and the control of drilling operations. The analytical procedure and the means taken to ensure the necessary reproductibility and accuracy are described. One operator can carry out 400 elemental determinations per 8-hr day at an approximate cdst of 6 cents per elemental determination. The results are returned within a single day, a factor which can contribute materially to the efficiency of drilling operations.

Direct transfer, or community translocation, comprises salvage and replacement of intact æsodsÆ of vegetation together with underlying soil. It has been applied to New Zealand mine sites restoration of native grasslands, wetlands, scrub lands, and forest. It is an equivalent technique to æinstant lawn or tree gardenÆ, commonly used in urban landscaping. Two to six m2 scoops of vegetation, with up to 0.7 m of soil attached, and including root plates of trees and shrubs, are relocated from stripped areas ahead of mining to sites prepared for restoration. Direct transfer uses hydraulic excavators or face shovels and dump trucks, possibly with the aid of bulldozers and other earthmoving machinery. The main advantages of direct transfer, compared with sowing or planting systems for mine site restoration, are the recycling of plant and soil materials which were often wasted by burying under overburden materials, a significantly faster revegetation process, and restoration of the whole ecosystem (plants, animals, birds, invertebrates, and microbes). The main disadvantages are higher costs of stripping and dumping, a greater degree of machine operator skill required, and scheduling becomes critically important. To illustrate the key principles, this paper gives examples of successes and failures of the technique for a variety of New Zealand mining situations. Direct transfer has been successful for a range of communities, from fern wetland and sub-alpine tussock grasslands to 5 m-tall beech forest under storey and seral shrub land, and from temperate to sub-alpine climates. Successful examples show both rapid recovery of indigenous vegetative cover and conservation of habitat for birds and invertebrates. Failures have resulted from excessive death of plants because of inadequate soil salvage depths, acidic leachates, inappropriate handling of stripped sods by inexperienced machinery operators, or prolonged drought conditions immediately following relocation. Change in plant species composition has occurred where clumps of vegetation are too far apart, or shifted plants were too small - in both cases invasive weeds have smothered the original vegetation. Changes in hydrology can also have significant impacts. Our experience indicates that the advantages of direct transfer far outweigh the disadvantages and is now used as the preferred restoration method, where practicable, at mines where it has been trialled.

Electronic and Electric Equipment contains a range of components made of a wide variation of metals, plastics and other substances. Up to 60 elements can be found in complex electronic equipment: base metals, precious metals and special metals in circuit boards and batteries. Because of its amount WEEE represents a considerable metal resource with a higher special and precious metal content than found in ores. The Umicore integrated smelter and refinery recovers and supplies back to the market 17 different metals from EEE. Pre-treated materials enter state of the art, material and energy efficient metallurgical processes for environmentally sound recovery of metals and treatment of off gasses and hazardous substances. The organics in the feed function as reducing agent and alternative energy source during smelting for precious metal recovery. Lithium-ion batteries are treated using a dedicated process. As a result the environmental footprint of metals produced from EEE is much smaller than primary production.

"SUMMARY This report reviews the status of the packaged-for industry as of 1941. A field study was made of 35 representative plants to obtain technics and economic data on different types of processes used to make packaged fuel in the Central States. The report includes a classification of processes, photographs of typical operations, designs of different plants, an analysis of costs of manufacture, and a study of the physical and chemical properties of fuel cubes.It was observed that many of the smaller plants were having troubles in the manufacture of packaged fuel as the price of materials and costs of labor advanced toward the higher levels of 1942. In some instances, the total cost of manufacture was as high as $5.00 per ton, while in the better, medium-sized plants it was approximately $3.25 per ton. The direct manufacturing costs, excluding investment and depreciation, ranged from $3.17 to $2.37. These costs permit almost no profit at small plants when packaged fuel sells for the same price as competing lump coal under conditions existing in 1941-42.It was found that the predominant troubles in plants were due to inadequate drying and insufficient mixing of the starch binder. It was ob¬served that in the better plants, where proper mixing of binder was attained high-quality packages were made if 50 to 70 percent of the moisture was removed in the drying ovens. Experimental data obtained in the laboratory show the relationship between the temperature of dry air and the time required to remove different percentages of moisture in wrapped orunwrapped coal cubes.The average physical and chemical properties of fuel cubes made by five processes are listed, and tentative standards for minimum physical qualities and methods for measuring quantity are giver."

The data developed in this study establishes the technical and economic feasibility as well as the improved health and safety characteristics of a novel mining concept. The mining concept is a modified longwall technique using prestressed tendons for roof control, longhole blasting for fragmentation, and remote mucking. The technical feasibility was found to be dependent on the state of the art, while economic feasibility was found to be dependent on particular minerals and on supply and demand. Since these two conditions are not necessarily coincident in time the data is presented in the report in a manner that enables the mining engineer to perform a rapid preliminary technical and economic analyses for a specific property.

Near misses recorded and reported by workers can provide awarenessto the potential causes of injury and prompt safety management initiatives. Although most companies require near-miss reporting, it is unclear what the value of these reports are, if any, and how they influence subsequent actions or controls to reduce on-the-job risks. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a case study with an aggregates company in which near-miss reports were analyzed at each of their locations over an entire quarter during the summer of 2018. Within that quarter, workers recorded 249 near misses. Of those, 167 were valid near misses that occurred at work. Researchers coded the reports using a qualitative 5 × 5 risk matrix. Of the 167 near misses, 19% were deemed low risk, 25% moderate risk, 30% high risk, and 26% critical risk. Several patterns in the near-miss incidents were documented, including classification of incidents and common corrective actions referenced (i.e., elimination/substitution, engineering control or redesign, work process/procedures, and personal protective equipment). The analysis provides insight into ways that risk communication and management programs can be improved to reengage workers and their situational awareness on the job.

During the fiscal year ended September 30, 1932, there were 27 fatalities in the coal mines of Indiana. Four of this number occurred in small mines employing less than 10 men, over which the State Inspection Department has no jurisdiction. In addition to these coal mine fatalities, an explosives accident in a clay mine resulted fatally to one man. Tables 1 and 2, which follow, list the fatalities as to cause and occupation. The grade of mineral resource estimates underpin all major economic considerations of mining prospects. While there are reporting requirements to satisfy when stating a mineral resource estimate, an examination of NI 43-101 style reports suggests that authors believe that there are a number of ways of addressing these requirements. As a reader of these reports, some processes are helpful and others are not so in getting a real appreciation of how realistic is the mineral resource estimate. Critical to the quality of the mineral resource estimate is how realistic is the economic mineral concentration component. In many cases, this parameter is called grade. The industry experiences increased difficulty in achieving realistic grade estimates as the sample grade variability increases. The level of transparency in a mineral resource estimate is very much a function of the competence of the author. An objective presentation of the critical data, such as grade sampling variability can assist a reader in determining if the geology of the mineral concentration is adequately understood and how realistic is mineral resource grade estimate. This paper has considered 75 NI 43-101 style reports released in the past 2 years. The review demonstrates features that were helpful in determining how realistic the mineral resource grade estimate is. If there is insufficient transparency in a report, there is a high probability that the mineral resource grade estimate will not be realistic.
