IN dealing with this subject the intention is not to write a detailed description of the various methods in vogue on the Kalgoorlie field, but rather to give a brief outline of three of the methods which are most universally in force, and from which, ultimately, a few comparisons may be drawn. The three methods which the writer proposes embodying in this article are known as "The Rill," "The Flatback," and "The Shrinkage." For comparative purposes each method will be applied to a block of ore 500 feet in length, and opened up by levels 200 feet apart."The Rin" System. It is necessary in this system, for facilitating mullocking, to make connections between levels by rising and winzing at about every 100 feet or 150 feet along the orebody. After the leading stope is beaten off for the full length ofthe drive, the level is timbered. Single stulls are put in up to a width of fourteen feet. If the span is too great for stulls, set timbers or saddleback stuUs are used. Stulls are lagged over with 4-in gimlet poles, and wooden chutes are built at intervals of 50-feet. Ore passes are cribbed up through the filling directly above each chute, and are constructed of 7-in. round timber or 9 in x 3 in square timber, the passes measuring 4 ft x 4 ft in the clear.Occasionally a double pass may be carried up, one side serving as a travelling way. Semisolid metal alloys have a special microstructure of globular grains suspended in a liquid metal matrix. This particular physical state of the matter can be exploited to produce near-net- shape parts with improved mechanical properties. However, the behavior of the slurry is strongly influenced by the local solid fraction and state of agglomeration. Different flow instabilities ·associated with the combined flow and solidification process result, which make difficult the application of semi-solid processing in the casting industry. Moreover, the rheology of semisolid materials is not well understood. Most of the theory has been derived from experimental data, which are somewhat difficult to measure. A model that accounts for the multiphase nature of semisolid slurries is required to get more insight into such complex flows. This paper describes a mixture model for semisolid slurries. It assumes that the mixture of liquid-solid components behaves as a single fluid as far as overall mass and momentum balances are concerned. The coupling force between the phases is derived on the assumption that the slurry is a fluid saturated isotropic media. The proposed methodology is implemented in a finite element code. The model is then applied to the the filling of an industrial-scale capillary flow viscometer. Segregation patterns are obtained and discussed.

Briefly, this swelling test consists in heating 1 gram of pulverized coal in a silica crucible over a gas flame under prescribed conditions to form a coke button which is compared in size and shape with a series of standard profiles numbered 1 to 9. These profiles are intended to cover the size and shape of buttons obtained from coals covering a wide range in plastic properties. The number of the standard profile with which the maximum cross-sectional area of the button most nearly corresponds is recorded as the swelling index. Although the swelling test showed poor relationships with the various tests that were used for measuring expansion or contraction of coal during carbonization, it gave indications of having value in measuring free-swelling and coking properties of coals when burned on fuel tests. An opportunity to investigate this occurred when an engineering company reported pronounced differences in burning characteristics on grates of various shipments of Pocahontas coal. Some of these coals gave trouble by swelling excessively and clogging the grate. Samples were obtained, and it was found that the troublesome coals gave radically higher free-swelling numbers than did the coals that performed satisfactorily. Also, it was found that the free-swelling index test gave better differentiation between coals than could be obtained from the coke buttons from the standard volatile-matter test or iron agglutination-value results. The results of the free-swelling test were confirmed by the Subcommittee on Plasticity and Swelling, Coal, a special group of the Subcommittee, under the chairmanship of R.A. Shuman, worked along with the test method. Estberg, Limacher, and Shuman of the Battelle Memorial Institute investigated the various factors affecting the test and found that the swelling index was a good indication of the suitability of coal for performance on residential-type stokers from the swelling characteristics of the coal. Data were presented that also showed that the index was helpful in the selection of coal for industrial underfeed stokers.

Western Coalfield?s Tandsi Mine, has difficult support conditions and a history of roof falls, resulting in mining roadway widths and depths being restricted for safety reasons. Rock Mechanics Technology Ltd was contracted to improve the support system to allow the introduction of mechanised room and pillar mining. The introduction of a ?world best practice? bolting system resulted in major improvement in roof stability, allowing mining restrictions to be lifted and Tandsi to become one of the first two Indian mines to introduce a mechanised continuous miner system. The first year?s production was some six times previous levels. Because of the improvement in the support system, RMT was also able to design a partial de-pillaring system suitable for the Tandsi continuous miner districts together with the introduction of monitoring procedures and guidelines to maintain safe roof support conditions. In situ monitoring of pillar and roof behaviour was undertaken as the first pillars were extracted to confirm the design. De-pillaring operations have also proved highly productive, and to date there has been no associated support related major injury or dangerous occurrence. The success of this project demonstrates the potential for mechanised room and pillar mining in India.

This is a sampling of the papers presented at the conference, the proceedings can be bought from the SAIMM Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) computational techniques allow treatment of gases, liquids and solids in the same simulation. ALE methods include the ability to treat shock waves in gases, liquids and solids and the interaction of shock waves with each other and with media from one of the other categories. ALE codes can also treat explosive detonation and the expansion of the explosive gases and their interaction with air and solids. ALEGRA is a 3-D ALE code that has been developed at Sandia National Laboratories over the past few years. ALEGRA has been applied to a 2-D simulation of presplitting using decoupled explosives in rock blasting with very interesting results. The detonation of the explosive at the bottom of the hole sends a shock wave up the borehole driven by the explosive gas expanding into air. The explosive gas compresses the air against the stemming column where it rebounds and recompresses at the bottom of the borehole. This type of ringing takes several cycles to damp out. The explosively induced expansion of the borehole is also treated by ALEGRA as well as the shock wave imparted to the rock. The presentation of this paper will include several computer animations to aid in understanding this complex phenomenon.

"The processing behaviours of ores such as their liberation characteristics in comminution and their response in separation processes are affected by their mineralogical characteristics. Key ore characteristics which are relevant to processing, such as mineral proportions, mineral grain size, grain shape and mineral associations are routinely measured at the micro-scale in polished section using optical microscopes and SEM-based automated mineralogy systems. The application of X-ray micro-tomography to mineral processing provides the means to quantify these important micro-textural characteristics in three dimensions, removing the stereological issues encountered when measuring volumetric information in two-dimensional polished sections. In this paper we present several examples of ore textures to illustrate where X-ray micro-tomography can be applied successfully to obtain quantitative measures of ore characteristics which are useful in a variety of process modelling applications.INTRODUCTION X-ray tomography has been used as a tool in medicine for some years and is being applied in a wider range of fields including geology, palaeontology and mineralogy. In this paper we present some applications of X-ray tomography in mineral processing applications being developed at JKMRC. The availability of SEM-based automated mineralogy systems such as MLA and QEMSCAN has seen the increased use of quantitative mineralogical data measured in two dimensions in the design, operation and simulation of mineral processing plants. When the ore is amenable to measurement by X-ray tomography this technique can provide quantitative data for characteristics such as mineral grain size, shape, mineral associations and liberation in three-dimensions. The advantage of measuring these characteristics in three-dimensions is that the stereological issues which bias measurements made on polished sections are removed. X-ray tomography also quantifies the location of mineral grains relative to one another in space - a useful descriptor of ore texture. Like many measurement techniques X-ray tomography has advantages and disadvantages when compared to other techniques. One limitation is that the ability of the X-ray tomography system to discriminate between minerals is a function of the X-ray attenuation of those minerals. While the X-ray attenuation of many common minerals is sufficiently different for X-ray tomography to distinguish between them, there are some where the overlap in X-ray attenuation makes discrimination on the basis of this characteristic alone impossible. An example of this would be chalcopyrite and magnetite. However where the ore mineralogy is suitable to apply X-ray tomography, the technique provides some exciting opportunities to explore the relationship between texture and ore processability."

The DRIVEN GROUT PILE was developed in 1989 by DeWitt Construction, Incorporated. This piling essentially consists of a cost-in-place concrete piling that reacts on a steel boot that is driven to bearing. This report will describe the driven grout pile, its background and its installation. The advantages and disadvantages of this system are also discussed. Finally, the results of actual field installations are presented and discussed. BACKGROUND The DRIVEN GROUT PILE was developed out of a need for a low-cost high capacity piling (100 ton) that could be installed with ordinary pile driving equipment. This search was motivated by attempting to incorporate the material economy of an auger-cast piling with the "empirical load test" of a driven pile. Typically, the least cost material for piling in the 100 ton range is concrete (grout). A grout shaft with minimal reinforcement can withstand a compressive load of 100 tons for a material cost in the range of $6.00 to $8.00 per lineal foot. A pipe piling with a capacity of 100 tons has a unit material cost ranging to $13.00 per lineal foot. The marriage of these two advantages resulted in the DRIVEN GROUT PILE. A pile that utilizes the economy of a reinforced grout shaft and has the loading confidence of a driven pile.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines paper is to provide the mineral industry with current information on high-speed data processing and to illustrate how some of these techniques can be applied to the industry. The need for applying these techniques is generally recognized, but not much information is readily available on specific applications. This paper briefly describes high-speed data processing and reduction equipment in an effort to familiarize the reader with the functions of the equipment. A list and explanation of some of the possible applications of high-speed data processing for the mineral industry are included. A few of these applications are illustrated by the use of specific examples of existing computer programs or processing methods, including their calculation times and costs. Some of the programs cited herein were developed by the author at the University of Arizona for a Masters thesis in mining engineering. When a reference is made to a specific computer, the reference is given to make the information that is being presented as factual as possible; most of the manufacturer's equipment that is mentioned in the references was available at the University of Arizona, and no specific endorsement of that manufacturer is intended.

The Bureau of Mines is developing methods for reclaiming the metal and mineral values contained in municipal incinerator residues. This report describes the first phase of the research, in which reliable methods for sampling and analyzing municipal residues were established and the composition and characteristics of the residues were determined. Samples were obtained from a variety of grate-type furnaces and also from a rotary kiln furnace. The samples were processed on a batch basis and separated into their natural categories by a variety of methods including screening, magnetic separation, air separation techniques, and handpicking. The main components of the residues were determined to be metal and metal oxides, glass, and ash.

Bench-scale test methods were developed by the Bureau of Mines for use by the Department of Transportation in the classification of solid and liquid oxidizers. A burning rate test is recommended for evaluating the fire hazard of solid inorganic oxidizers when mixed with a red oak sawdust as the reference combustible. A spontaneous ignition test is proposed for evaluating liquid and solid inorganic oxidizers which may decompose violently or ignite spontaneously when unmixed or mixed with the wood sawdust under unconfined conditions. Test results are compared for various representative oxidizers and a classification system is proposed for use in the government transportation regulations.

"Abstract - Time-domain electromagnetic systems are most sensitive to highly conductive targets during the transmitter on-time. Data collected during the on-time is highly influenced by the geometric relationship between the transmitter and the receiver. Unless corrections can be applied for these geometric variations, the ability to correctly detect and identify highly conductive targets can not be fully realized. Variables affecting the relative position between the transmitter and receiver include changes in the position of the receiver with respect to the transmitter, variations in transmitter attitude, and transmitter loop deformation. The level of accuracy in the determination of the relative geometry required to permit complete removal of the effects due to geometric variations is different for each of the variables and is dependent on the depth of the target. The most influential geometric variation involves changes in the relative position of the receiver with respect to the transmitter along the direction of flight; this variable, therefore, requires the highest degree of accuracy. The accuracy required for receiver motions along the vertical direction is roughly one order of magnitude less, and in the lateral direction, several orders of magnitude less. The objective of this paper is to relate the sensitivity of the response to transmitter-receiver geometry to the ability of an airborne, time-domain electromagnetic system to resolve a highly conductive vertical target. This is achieved by a detailed analysis of the effect of the individual x, y, and z distances between the transmitter and the receiver, the transmitter attitude (roll, pitch, and yaw), and transmitter deformation.Sommaire - Les systèmes électromagnétiques en domaine temporel sont particulièrement sensibles aux cibles à forte conductivité durant le temps d’excitation. Drill trajectory deviation is a recurring problem in the Mining Industry retreat stoping operations. As a result of this deviation, it is quite concevable that 60 kg (165 mm 0) and 103 kg (203 mm 0) explosive charges are detonated beyond the hanging wall contact. Consequently, there follows a reduction in hanging wall stability and an increase in ore dilution.

A new strain of Thiobacil/us ferrooxidans (SPK I) has been isolated which has a higher copper to iron release ratio (2.04) than the standard T ferrooxidans (CPBI) (1.12). The diminished iron oxidizing ability enables almost quantitative release of copper (93 per cent) from a chalcopyrite-rich concentrate without interference by iron reprecipitation. In a single batch leach, Bougainville copper concentrate yielded 9.3 grams/litre soluble copper from a 4 per cent w/v suspension in 100 days at 32°C.Solvent extraction recovery of soluble copper is recommended as a final step in a leaching process.

The Leeville underground mine has been in operation since 2006 and currently produces 3,500 tons of ore per day with an average gold grade of 0.34 opt. The mine has a large horizontal extent of 2,500 feet by 500 feet and a vertical extent of 20 to 200 feet. Based on the characteristics of the ore bodies, a long-hole stope and cut-and-fill mining methods are used at the deposits which are divided into several mining zones. Cemented rock fill (CRF) is used as the backfill in the open stope. CRF design includes the aggregate design, the ratio of cement and fly ash design, and strengths for the long-hole stope and cut-and-fill. In the aggregate design, the particle size distribution is one of the most influential aggregate characteristics in determining how it will perform as a basic backfill material. Gradation helps determine durability, porosity, cement and water requirements, strength, and shrinkage. To cut the backfill cost, fly ash usually is added into the binder to replace some part of cement. However, adding fly ash can affect the strength of the backfill. The reasonable percentage of fly ash is also important for making a good and low cost backfill. Based on the different mining method, the different backfill with different strength is designed. A systematic quality control procedure for aggregate and backfill is followed. After four yeas application, CRF system in Leeville achieved very good results.

"Two iron deposits within the Precambrian mineral belt of Cameroon are described in detail for the first time: the Archean Metzimevin replacement iron deposit enclosed in Fe-enriched itabirite, and the Proterozoic granite-hosted, shear zone-related Mayo Binka magnetite deposit. In the Metzimevin de¬posit, quartz is corroded and microplaty hematite overprints martite-textured hematite. The Mayo Binka massive magnetite veins show evidence of deformation in magnetite (fracturing and microbrecciation) and in overgrowths of specular hematite (mechanical twinning and undulating extinction). The magnetite is partially replaced by hematite (martitization) and goethite. Ores from both deposits have >88% total Fe2O3 and low contents of contaminants such as SiO2, Al2O3, MgO, CaO, P2O5, and TiO2. They are also poor in Cu, Pb, Zn, V, Cr, and Ni. The Metzimevin massive hematite is characterized by an accentuated light rare earth element depletion relative to the Fe-enriched itabirite. It is suggested that the Metzimevin iron deposit is the result of hypogene leaching of gangue minerals from, and further hematitization of, an itabirite protore. Although the genesis of the Mayo Binka massive magnetite is unclear, it is spatially related to Neoproterozoic granitic rocks. The data allow some comparison of these little known, but pot¬entially economic iron deposits, with some of the world’s better investigated deposits, and are useful to the exploration efforts for iron ore currently underway in Cameroon and the Central African subregion.Deux gisements de fer de la ceinture minérale Précambrienne du Cameroun sont ici décrits en détail pour la première fois : le gisement de fer Archéen de Metzimevin formé par remplacement et encaissé par des itabirites enrichies en Fe, et le gisement de magnétite Protérozoïque de Mayo Binka as¬socié au cisaillement dans un granite. Les veines de magné¬tite massive de Mayo Binka présentent des évidences de déformation dans la magnétite (fracturation et microbréchification) et dans les surcroissances d’hématite spéculaire (Macles tectoniques et extinction ondulante). La magnétite est partiellement remplacée par l’hématite (martitisation) et par la goethite. Le minerai des deux gisements contient >88% de Fe2O3 total et un faible contenu en contaminants tels que SiO2, Al2O3, MgO, CaO, P2O5, et TiO2. Il est également pauvre en Cu, en Pb, en Zn, en V, en Cr et en Ni. L’hématite massive de Metzimevin est caractérisée par un appauvrissement relatif en terres rares légères relativement à l’itabirite enrichie en Fe. Il est suggéré que le gisement de fer de Metzimevin résulte du les¬sivage hypogène des minéraux de la gangue ainsi que de l’hématitisation poussée d’une préconcentration de fer dans l’itabirite. Bien que la genèse de la magnétite massive de Mayo Binka demeure obscure, elle est spatialement associée aux roches granitiques Néoprotérozoiques. Ces données permettent de comparer ces gisements de fer peu connus et potentiellement économiques avec certains des gisements mondiale¬ment mieux connus, aidant ainsi les efforts d’exploration présentement en cours en Afrique de l’ouest et au Cameroun."

This report is the second of a series on roof movement in coal mines. The first (R. I. 3355)4/ dealt with convergence of roof and floor and movement of the surface accompanying and following extraction in a mechanized mine in which retreat of rib lines was rapid. The studies reported herein were made in a mine in which all the coal is loaded by hand, and movement of the rib lines was much slower in consequence. In choosing a site for this work, it was decided that the mine selected should have natural conditions akin to those of the first study and entirely different methods of working. To this end a cooperative agreement was made with the Crucible Fuel Co. through W. J. Whitaker, secretary, for conducting the work in the company's Crucible mine, operating in the Pittsburgh bed in Greene County, Pa. This paper gives an account of the methods used in the investigation, excerpts from the data obtained, and such generalizations as can be made.
