The properties and characteristics of lead and zinc have made these metals useful to man in many ways since the days of antiquity. Despite their long history of use, however, these metals have proved to be extremely resilient and responsive to modern needs. New alloys and compounds continue to be developed, adding to the growth of these metals. Consumption data is given for 1969 and compared with one and two decades ago. Trends in major markets also are cited and explained. Uses for lead and zinc which have come into prominence within the past few years are described and explained, with emphasis on the role played by the industry's cooperative research program. Current efforts in the research phase are discussed, with details given on major efforts for both metals, including new alloys, process developments, applications research, finishes, coating, paints and pigments, batteries and fundamental research. A forecast is given of promising new areas and a projection made on a longer term of new applications that may emerge from current research.

"Guideline Augered Cast-In-Place (ACIP) Pile Specification and Commentary11.0 GENERAL1.1 SCOPEThe Pile Contractor shall furnish all labor, materials, tools and equipment necessary for furnishing, installing and testing Augered Cast-in-Place (ACIP) piles as shown on the Contract Drawings and as specified herein.ACIP piles are commonly referred to by several other names. Some of them are trademarks or service marks owned by Foundation Contractors and some are names that try to describe the installation process. The term “cast-inplace” is sometimes replaced with “cast-in-situ,” especially in Europe. Some common names are Auger Cast Piles, Intruded Mortar Piles, Augerpress Piles, Augered Pressure Grouted Piles, AugerPile Foundations, Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) Piles, Grouted Bored Piles, Augered Grout-Injected Piles, Drilled or Augered Uncased Piles, and Uncased Cast-in-Place Concrete Piles. To avoid confusion, ACIP pile will be used exclusively herein.1.2 PILE CONTRACTOR QUALIFICATIONSThe ACIP piles shall be installed by an experienced Pile Contractor who upon request of the Engineer shall submit evidence of successful ACIP pile installation under similar job and subsurface conditions, including a job supervisor who shall have a minimum of five years of method specific experience.The proper installation of the ACIP piles is dependent upon the procedures used by the Pile Contractor’s field representatives and equipment provided. The Pile Contractor’s personnel responsible for the installation should have relevant experience with the auguring and pumping equipment, experience placing piles under similar site conditions (including restricted headroom if appropriate), in similar subsurface conditions, as well as experience handling the special grout mixes, admixtures, etc."

Discarded automobiles represent the greatest single resource of reusable metals, plastics, and rubber in the United States. This report presents results of Bureau of Mines research, conducted from 1965 to 1983, on separating and recovering useful materials from the scrapped hulks, using old and new metallurgical techniques combined with standard scrapyard methods. The Bureau determined the materials composition of three composite cars designated as circa 1960, mid-1970's, and early 1980's, and used these cars to study smokeless incineration and hand-sorting techniques. In studies on treating rejects from automobile shredders, the Bureau designed a process that included air classification, water elutriation, magnetic separation, handpicking, and heavy-medium separation, and also investigated cryogenics and liquation. Complete recovery of cop-per and other metals was economically made by hand and tool dismantling, leaching, or selective melting of starters and generators. Techniques are also discussed for plastic recovery and waste tire treatment.

Here are summarized 162 papers, published between 1933 and 1967, that deal with various aspects of ore genesis. Emphasis is placed on additions to, or modifications of, ore-formation theory, no matter what type of deposit is discussed. More space is given to papers on the formation of base-metal sulfides solely because more papers are written on this subject. The final conclusion is reached that a chemically and geologically sound theory for the genesis of ore deposits can be built around the concept of concentration of ore e’ements in a magmatically produced ore fluid and around such surface processes as may act to concentrate economically valuable materials from rocks of any origin exposed at the surface.

The survey work on protective canopy design was conducted in a 2-month period commencing November 15, 1973. The reported re¬sults under this contract are intended to provide guidance to coal mine operators in complying with federal regulations pertaining to incorporation of protective canopies on underground coal mine electric face equipment. All coal mine electric face equipment manufacturers and 11 coal mines were visited in the course of conducting this survey. Canopy designs currently being manufactured and those now being used underground were examined and discussed with manufacturers, mine operators, machine operators, and safety committeemen. The general objective was to find out what kind of canopies are now being made and used underground, what the operational problems are, and what can be done to secure improvements. Specifically, the survey scope was as follows: a. Survey all electric face equipment manufacturers. b. Survey 10 coal mines (seam height 60 inches and greater). c. Identify current production canopy configurations and minimum mine entry dimensions for each model and type of electric face equipment. d. Assess in-mine operation of canopies developed by manufacturers and/or coal companies. e. Specify optimal canopy configuration and minimum mine entry dimensions for each type and model of electric face equipment.

This survey is one of a series of Bureau of Mines publications designed to serve the needs of Government and industry for comprehensive information on mineral commodities and activities. Copper, a versatile metal, has been vital to all civilizations from pre-historic times to the present. Its essential value in antiquity and until the nineteenth century arose from its malleability and ease of working, its corrosion resistance and durability, its attractive colors in alloyed and unalloyed forms, and, of course, its availability. The principal uses were for tools, utensils, vessels, weapons, pipe, statuary and other objects of art, and for building and architectural purposes where formability, permanence, and beauty were necessary qualities. Utilization of copper based on these physical and mechanical properties has grown tremendously for commercial, structural, mechanical, architectural, and art items; and its capacity for forming numerous alloys has led to a myriad of applications from miniature copper and brass eyelets to huge bronze battleship propellers. The early nineteenth century marks the epoch of the greatest use of copper, transmitting electrical energy. This particular property of copper is fundamental to the spectacular growth of the electrical industry and all associated industries relying on electricity for power, light, and heat. More than half of all copper produced is used for transmission of electricity.

The first major evaluation of the nation's raw materials prospects after World War II was completed by the President's Materials Policy Commission (Paley Commission) in 1952 and submitted to the President in June of that year, as a five-volume study entitled Resources for Freedom. The bulk of the report was devoted to an analysis of the past, present, and probable future of the Nation's mineral supply industries. The Commission's evaluation of the future situation regarding minerals was derived from its forecasts of the probable domestic demand for the major minerals in the 1970's. This demand analysis was made in the context of probable worldwide demand. Several crucial assumptions were made by the Commission's fore-casters. It was assumed in 1950 that the next 20 to 30 years would see no major wars and be a period of sustained economic growth. Another assumption was that the anticipated demand for raw materials must be supplied at essentially no increase in real cost in order to avoid crucial supply problems. The Commission's forecasts were derived within the context of the country's expected future rate of economic activity. The gross national product (GNP) growth to 1975 was derived from projections of the number of people in the labor force, hours of work, and an index of probable production measured per unit of labor input. It was believed labor hours would decrease and labor productivity would increase. The result was a forecast GNP growth rate of 3 percent.

Ventilation Air Methane (VAM) is a high volume low concentration methane source. The capture or use of methane from VAM is challenging, which results in the routine discharge of methane into the atmosphere. Mitigating VAM has the benefits of providing an energy source and reducing the atmospheric Greenhouse Gas (GHG) burden. The GHG radiative forcing effect of methane is 17?23 times as potent as carbon dioxide on a 100-year time horizon. Thus, any reduction in atmospheric methane would be beneficial. The calorific value of methane is 55.5 MJ/Kg; therefore, a 100 m3/s flow with VAM concentrations from 0.1?1% can provide 3.8?38 MW of exploitable power. Strategies to mitigate VAM such as: Thermal Flow Reverse Reactors (TFRR), Catalytic Flow Reverse Reactors (CFRR), Lean Burn and Catalytic Gas Turbines, Biothermica Vamox®, Megtec VOCSIDIZER©, and Vamcat? are briefly reviewed. The review of VAM mitigation technologies reveals disadvantages such as the need to maintain a minimum internal heat capable of oxidizing the methane. This requirement uses all of the available methane up to the point of reaction sustainability and up to half at the highest methane concentration in VAM. Some systems may introduce a pressure drop to the ventilation system, which would impinge on the existing ventilation system design. These impediments necessitate the development of a more amenable technology. In the proposed system, gas turbines (GT), coupled to a combustion chamber with an external fuel supply, assist the combustion of the VAM. The combustion-chamber coupled system provides electricity, while the heat contained in the GT exhaust gases increases the temperature of the VAM, encouraging the development of a flame inside a combustion chamber. The flow from the combustion chamber streams through a primary air/fluid heat exchanger capable of producing steam of a high enough quality to generate electricity using conventional steam turbines. The residual heat after primary extraction, directed through other equipment, provides additional heat based products such as industrial scale dry air, chilling by an absorption chiller or hot water. The overall design of the system is scalable for low to high VAM flows or variations in concentrations and is capable of providing the company or community with heating, chilling, hot water, electricity or motive force as needed by the particular site or community. The Multi-generation system uses heat from three sources to provide clean efficient energy while mitigating the atmospheric emissions of methane. These sources are heat from the GT, often considered waste heat, heat from fuel injected into the igniters and heat from the VAM. The opportunity to collect carbon credits may improve the economics. In order to design a system with this capacity, a detailed analysis of the combustion characteristics of three separate flows is required. VAM is the main airflow, having the highest volumetric effect, while the GT exhaust and the additional fuel added to the hot exhaust flow of the gas turbine are lower flows, but have a higher velocity and temperature. The aim of the modeling undertaken in this work is to establish the combustion dynamics, degree of pre-heating required and the geometry essential to the design of combustion based VAM mitigation multi-generation systems.

Cyanide is a fast-acting, highly toxic substance but, at the same time, is deemed essential for sustaining life as well 'as our standard of living. In this manuscript, the facts about cyanide are presented beginning with a brief history and definition and ending with a discussion on cyanide alternatives. Other topics include speciation, physical characteristics, toxicity, manufacturing, cyanogenics, cyanide cycle, separation, destruction, and markets including those outside the mining industry. Emphasis, of course, is placed on gold production by leaching and how it is influenced by ore type, mineral characteristics and economics as well as its advantages and disadvantages.

The U.S. economy continued to grow moderately in the third quarter, but at a slightly higher rate than in the previous quarter. According to the Department of Commerce's preliminary estimate, real gross national product (GNP) grew at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 3.3% during the third quarter of 1985, compared with a revised 1.9% for the second quarter and 1.6% for the third quarter of 1984 (table 1). Civilian unemployment dropped from the constant 7.3% rate between February and July to 7.0% in August and 7.1% in September. Employment on nonagricultural payrolls continued to increase (table 2), resulting in a continued rise in personal income, which in turn supported growing consumer purchases. Although purchases of services continued to provide the underlying foundation for the economic growth, the manufacturing sector received additional stimulus from significant increases in consumer purchases of durable goods, particularly automobiles. The increased demand for durable goods resulted in significantly higher industrial production for August and September, compared with levels attained previously this year (table 3). Capacity utilization increased to 80.5% in August but returned to 80.2% in September, matching the 1985 low previously reached in July (table 4). The real net export deficit grew only $0.2 billion in the third quarter; at $34.0 billion, however, it continued to exert a negative influence on the economy. On September 22, in an effort to reduce the deficit and make U.S. goods more competitive on world markets, the U.S. Government agreed to cooperate with the Governments of France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Japan, and the United Kingdom in attempting to lower the-value of the dollar in relation to other world currencies. Low inventories, rising factory orders and construction spending, the possibility of a lower U.S. dollar, and aggressive automobile production plans announced by domestic producers for the fourth quarter indicate the potential for an increase in manufacturing activity in the United States.

"Auriferous quartz veins occupy zones of dilation. Foldgenerated dilation zones are systematically distributed and are dependent upon the folding mechanism. Comparison of natural and theoretical folds indicates that different mechanisms operated in the Halifax and Goldenville formations.In the slates of the Halifax Formation, the folds are of similar type and internal strain is most intense in the limbs. This internal strain is probably accommodated with little or no dilation.In the meta-sandstone and slates of the Goldenville Formation, a combined flexural and tangential longitudinal strain mechanism, modified by pure strain, produced the folds. Tension fissures produced by this mechanism are: (a) saddle 1'eef veins in slate horizons, (b) veins normal to bedding in meta-sandstone layers in the fold hinges,(c) veins along faults in the cores of tight fold hinges and (d) zones of en- échelon veins in slate honzons in the limbs of folds. Because veins in fold hinges (a, b and c above) account for most of the gold production in the Meguma Group, other factors controlling the distribution and size of these veins are summarized below.1. Problems connected with the incidence, effects, determination, and control of dusts are still much before the public, although more information is available to the layman than when Bulletin 400, of which this publication is a revision,5 was issued in 1937. Bulletin 400 attempted to assemble information in convenient form on various phases of the dust problem, largely in the mining and allied industries. This revision includes data that have accumulated since 1937 and some that appeared previous thereto but were not available to the authors at that time. The literature on this subject is so voluminous that no attempt has been made to include all published material or all types of dust diseases, but only to assemble some of the more outstanding data on several aspects of the subject.

Fieldwork in the Meguma of Nova Scotia and Archean equivalents shows that bedding-parallel quartz lode gold veins (LVs) commonly occur at the top of graded elastic sequences. We define a "gold cycle" (GC) by analogy with Bouma turbidites and show that most "shear zones" and "lamprophyres" correspond to the upper pelagic-pelitic (E) division. We describe GCs from Archean Chester Twp, ON; Elmhirst, ON; Bourlamaque, QC; "intrusions" and interpret them as crystal tuffs and tuff-breccias. Extensive early Archean pyroclastic volcanism is implied: the genesis of trondjhemite-tonalite-granodiorite (TTG) rocks must be re-examined. The geopetal nature and asymmetric alteration of LVs indicates genesis from sea-floor hydrothermal vents. Textures suggest that often quartz was deposited as a gel. Vent geometry (fracture, point source or diffuse seep), bottom topography and vent spacing is reflected in wade-thickness plots. GC facing directions survive metamorphism. The Bourlamaque batholith was a flat-lying sheet of quartz-feldspar-hornblende crystal tuff, and isoclinal folding has repeated one or more gold-bearing horizons. Syngenesis clarifies and simplifies LV formation with major implications for models. Exploration becomes more cost-effective. Basin analysis, whole rock geochemistry, ore lens geometry and vent spacing can be used.

This paper discusses small-scale lade gold mining and milling. It is abstracted from a bulletin being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines entitled "Equipping, Developing, and Operating Small Gold Mines." Gold is widely distributed in the mountainous regions of the United States; relatively few deposits, however, can be profitably worked on a large scale. Because of the high intrinsic value of gold, ores containing this metal may be very rich; hence it is possible to mine profitably smaller bodies of gold ore than of the more common metals.

There is a set of settled ideas in the field of the mechanics of rock mass joints, that need a deep revision, after the last experimental works of several authors. In this paper, this theme is approached under several viewpoints, like the following ones: the essential influence of the mating or mismatching of rock joints on their strength (different strength models are applicable to these two situations, one leading preferably to normal scale effects, and the other to inverse scale effects); Patton's model is a bad formulation of the joint strength, whenever there is a dilation effect in the slidings (actually, the essential consideration of the amplitude of the roughess isn't made by any limit equilibrium model, like Patton's model); the joint strength increases as the width perpendicular to the sliding direction is reduced (previous works of other authors suggested the independence of the strength on that width); the reduction of the anisotropy of the roughness, as the sample symmetry and sample dimensions increase; there is no scale effect in the discontinuity mechanics, if there is no roughness heterogeneity; when only the same roughness and undulation orders are involved in the tests, shorter samples have larger peak displacements and lower shear stiffnesses than larger samples (usually, the contrary is admitted). For all these reasons, there isn't an easy correlation between the small scale tests and the natural large joint scale. Only "in situ" large scale tests have some representativeness. All the above mentioned questions are correlated to each other. The world’s first copper electrorefinery started production in 1869 at Burry Port in South Wales. Built within the Pembrey Copper Works which had commenced smelting operations in 1849, the new refinery was based on principles described in the British patents issued to J.B. Elkington in 1865 and 1869. Refining principles and practices pioneered there were key to the foundation of modern electro-refining practice in what is now a dominant international industry producing over 16 Mt of electrical grade copper annually. This paper explores the background to this pioneering application of the new, early 19th century, science of “electro-metallurgy” and examines its links to the contemporary decorative electro-plating industry and to the shortcomings of 19th century fire refining. The beginnings and early years of the Pembrey electrorefinery are briefly discussed in relation to the quality, applications and pyrometallurgy of copper at the time. More than a decade would elapse before the birth of the electrical age: the Pembrey refinery may be seen as one of its vital precursors. It all, the year of the first electrolytic copper refinery established for 15 countries is included. These 15 countries now produce more that 70% of world refined copper (for 2018). INTRODUCTION In the 1840s, the new science of ‘electro-metallurgy’, a term coined by Smee in 1841 (Smee, 1841), was being adapted to the decorative electro-deposition of silver in a thin, bright adherent coating that was evidently equal in appearance to traditional silverware (Williams, 1976). Chief among innovative manufacturers of decorative objects who took up the new art of silver electro-plating was the acclaimed firm of G.R. Elkington and Co. of Birmingham, England. The company, which vigorously developed all aspects of electro-metallurgy for the decorative trade, entered the field of ‘electrotyping’, a technique in which the surface features of a mould are copied on an electro-deposited copper layer which, when stripped off, can be used to reproduce an imprint of the mould. In essence, it is a form of casting by electrodeposition, invented in 1837 independently by Jacobi in Russia (Pavlova, 1968) and Spencer in England (Wyatt, 1851).
