A case study of longwall mining surface subsidence was performed at a mine in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The mine operated in the Pittsburgh coal seam which averaged 70-72 inches with 6-8 inches draw slate in the longwall location. The average overburden depth ranged from 625 8eet to 660 feet. Three adjacent longwall panels were studied and classified as Panel 1, Panel 2, and Panel 3. The following is information on each and can be seen on the General Mine Map (Fig. 1).

The Construction Aggregates Corp. operates a plant for processing sand and gravel from two deposits in Ottawa County, Mich. The bulk of the sand is obtained from a sand dune on the shore of Lake Michigan, and the gravel is dug from a glacial-drift deposit farther inland. Mining is done with draglines, and the material, both at the digging site and in the plant, is moved mainly by systems of conveyors. The Ferrysburg plant serves customers along the Great Lakes, which is unusual for a business normally local in character. Annual production exceeds 1-1/2 million tons of sand and gravel as concrete aggregate and 200,000 tons of core sand for foundry use.

With the progressive exhaustion of ore deposits easily discovered by surface prospecting, the attention of scientists is being turned more and more to the employment of mechanical means for the location of ore bodies whose outcrops are not visible. The dip needle, the Eotvos Torsion balance, and various methods of electrical prospecting are illustrative of the modem tendency. Interest in the possibility of applying electricity to the solution of many of the prospector's problems dates much farther back than is usually realized. The first person to notice an abnormal intensity of electrical activity in the region of certain ore bodies was an Englishman, R. W. Fox, who experimented on the Cornwall copper and tin veins about 1830. Dr. Barus, in the United States, carried the early experiments a step further in his work on the deposits of Eureka, Nevada, about 1880. He made the very definite suggestion that the phenomena noticed would be of material aid to the prospector. Not until Professor Schlumberger, of the Ecole des Mines, Paris, took up the matter, shortly before the war, was any definite effort made to put electrical prospecting on a commercial basis. His work resulted in the establishment of sound principles and practicable field technique, for two distinct methods of prospecting.

(Extractive Metallurgy)degree The concepts behind support vector machines are very interesting both in theory and in practice, as they are based on a universal constructive learning procedure derived from the statistical learning theory developed by Vapnik. In this paper, their application to time series modelling is considered by means of simulated data from an autocatalytic reactor. In particular, reconstruction methods from non-linear dynamics are used to define a state space model for the process. The Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA) specifies that the upper 1.22 m of material on the reclaimed surface should be left as uncompacted as possible to facilitate tree root growth. One of the main concerns about applying the FRA to steep slopes is that the upper 1.22 m of material could cause the reclaimed slopes to be unstable. Successful application of FRA on flat and rolling surfaces precipitated this investigation. Details of a field investigation conducted at a steep-slope mine are available in an earlier publication (Kumar and Sweigard, 2011). A total of 70 survey monuments were driven into the slope in a regular pattern to monitor slope movement. Quarterly surveys of the monuments were done to quantify any type of mass movement either horizontally or vertically. The methodology proposed for slope movement was verified using numerical models. Analytical models based on limit equilibrium technique and numerical models based on the finite element method were developed for slope stability analysis. The limit equilibrium analysis was done using Geo-Slope software following the Simplified Bishop Method. The finite element (FEM) numerical model was developed using the Plaxis computer program following the strength reduction technique. Two kinds of slope stability analysis were performed: first with the top 1.22 m of loose material and second without top loose material. Finally, the field investigation results were compared with stability analysis results. Both of these approaches showed that application of the FRA on steep slopes is not causing any significant instability problems that would not exist otherwise for overly steepened slopes. There are many examples, historical and recent, from the underground coal mining industry where during emergency response the response and ultimately the outcomes, could have been significantly improved if adequate systems had been in place for the collection and management of relevant information preceding the incident, the acquisition of information during the incident and the use of the information for risk mitigation and decision making purposes. The subject and process of knowledge management is possibly the most critical for would be rescuers of endangered coal mine workers, as it has been demonstrated at numerous coal mine incidents that a lack of or mismanagement of crucial information can be fatal for both the rescuer and/or the endangered coal mine worker. This paper will underline the scope and importance of robust knowledge management systems for emergency response within the underground coal mining industry and the process by which it is being achieved within the Queensland Mines Rescue Service and the NSW Mines Rescue Service.

"The angle of draw (in Germany, referred to as Limit Angle) plays a significant role in the field of mining subsidence engineering. This applies both to the assessment of the affected area by underground mining activities as well as applied methods for the prediction of ground movements.Recent observations using remote sensing show that ground movements outside the affected area defined by the angle of draw have been detected in German hard coal mining. Since the affected area by underground mining activities also plays an essential role regarding claims of landowners with damages to their houses and infrastructures, possible solutions for limiting the size of the affected area will be presented in this paper.Ground movements which exceed the affected area of an underground coal mine, as defined by the angle of draw will be shown in an exemplary manner. Present knowledge indicates an expectation that ground movements outside the affected area will not cause damage of major significance.This paper outlines the consequences for all affected parties regarding ground movements due to underground coal mining that exceed the extent of the area defined by the currently assumed angle of draw. This will be visualized in a case study.INTRODUCTIONGermany has a long tradition of coal mining, especially in the mining area of the Ruhr district. Following a long period of mining activity, the area is now highly populated and densely developed. In such an environment, it is of utmost importance to calculate and predict ground movements initiated by mining activities; therefore, the research here focused on the prediction of ground movement for the last decades. Special attention was given to the development of accurate ground movement models, which can be utilized in all mining areas. These models are based on different influencing factors such as depth of mining, worked thickness and the angle of draw.Depending on these models, the mining companies calculate the area of land subsidence; the predicted results are used for financial calculations and planning. For structures on top of zones with a high risk of deformation, structural measures can be applied, construction warnings can be given and, in cases of damage, compensation can be planned. The technical and economic planning was performed for all areas of mining subsidence. The most important factor for the outer limits of mining subsidence is the angle of draw (Ger. Grenzwinkel), which plots the border of the area of mining subsidence."

The following brief observations on the mineral composition of the Mt. Oxide copper ore are intended to supplement the geological description of that ore-body recently published by Blanchard (2).'" The Mt. Oxide copper mine is situated about 45 miles W.N.W. of Dobbyn, in the Cloncurry district of Queensland (Fig. 1). A representative suite of specimens from the mine was obtained through the kindness of Mr. P. B. Nye, Executive Officer of the Aerial, Geological and Geophysical Survey of Northern Australia, and Mr. Jack Hall, the tributor of the Mt. Oxide mine. The specimens, as shown in Fig. 2, were nearly all from the sulphide zone, between the l04-ft. level and the 300-ft. level. Geologically, as distinct from economically, "porphyry copper (molybdenum, gold, silver, etc.) deposits" might be defined as large, disseminated and/or stock-work occurrences of copper-minerals, generally averaging less than 1 per cent cop-per. They are normally associated with small plutons which range in composition from granite to diorite, although, typically, they consist of quartz monzonite or granodiorite. Circumstantial evidence indicates that these "minor" granitic intrusions may represent the intrusive phases of post-orogenic, calc-alkaline volcanism, this conclusion being suggested by: 1. Texture and grain size. 2. Prevalence of intrusive breccias. 3. Relationship to unconformities and estimated depth of emplacement. 4. Spatial distribution in relation to orogenic zones. 5. The mineral sector is a fundamental part of the U.S. economy. It contributes to the real gross domestic product (GDP) at several stages—basic (mining), intermediate processing, manufacturing of finished goods and construction. The estimated growth rate for the real GDP of the United States for 2006 was 3.2 percent. The nominal GDP was about $13.2 trillion. The value of minerals mined in the United States in 2006 rose significantly because of increased unit price for some metals—particularly copper, zinc and other base metals. There was also a significant reduction in metals stocks. Infrastructure expansion and manufacturing in China and India have been absorbing a significant portion of world output. A mine's inherent capacity is dictated by factors such as equipment, design, people, processes, and environment. Actual production may approach, but never surpass, the inherent capacity limit. The inherent capacity ceiling can only be increased through re-engineering. Autonomous haulage systems have the potential to significantly increase a mine ’s inherent and realized capacity. Realized capacity may be maximized through the optimization of soft factors such as the processes, behaviours, and organizational systems, controlling asset utilization, availability, and performance. Truck shovel dispatching systems revolutionized the utilization of mobile assets. High-precision global positioning systems (HP-GPS) are increasingly being adopted to optimize equipment performance. Real-time maintenance management systems have the potential to revolutionize equipment availability and significantly reduce cash costs. This paper explores some of the solutions available to mines to increase their inherent capacity and maximize their realized capacity.

Oil shale, a potential source of products presently obtained from petroleum, is found in many countries. The most extensive known deposits from the standpoint of potential shale oil in place are those in Brazil and the United States of America. Mining methods used for oil shale range from open-pit operations for shallow deposits to room-and-pillar and longwall techniques for deposits with thick overburdens. Oil shales from different sources vary greatly in the amounts and types of organic and inorganic constituents. By retorting, the organic material is converted to oil, gas, and coke. The largest percentages of oil are obtained from materials having the highest hydrogen content. Over 2,000 retorting systems have been patented, but only a few have been used industrially, and no single process seems best for all types of shales or economic conditions. Shale oils have different characteristics, depending on the source rock and method of retorting. They contain large quantities of olefinic hydrocarbons and more oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur derivatives of hydrocarbons than most petroleums. Consequently, petroleum refining methods usually must be modified for shale oil. This is particularly true in catalytic processing. INTRODUCTION The Point Lepreau nuclear generating station was constructed in the late 1970's and early 1980's by the New Brunswick Electric Power Commission. Point Lepreau is a small peninsula on the north shore of the Bay of Fundy, about 55 km west of St. John, New Brunswick. Cooling water for the plant was to be obtained from and discharged into the Bay of Fundy by the system of shafts and tunnels illustrated in Fig. 1. The design engineer for the cooling water system was Albery, Pullerits, Dickson and Associates, Ltd., Toronto. Ferrera-Resco Ltd, Windsor, Ontario, was contractor for construction of the cooling water shaft and tunnel system, which was done between 1976 and 1979. The senior author was project manager for Ferrera-Resco, the junior author served as consultant to Ferrera-Resco on evaluation of certain geotechnical questions which arose during construction. SITE CONDITIONS Geology Except for limited overburden soils at the onshore shaft sites, the tunnels and shafts were constructed entirely in Triassic conglomerate, sandstone, and siltstone, with some shale interbeds. The bedding strike averaged about N6°E, The dip was to the west at about 30° along the Discharge Tunnel and 40° along the Intake Tunnel. Rock along the Intake Tunnel was mostly sandstone and siltstone and more thinly bedded, with RQ D generally in the range of 50 to 60%. Rock along the Discharge Tunnel tended to be coarser sandstone and conglomerate and more thickly bedded, with higher RQ D averaging about 80%. Aggregate resources consist of sand and gravel, and crushed stone. They are large-tonnage, bulk-minable mineral commodities that are used in construction and industrial activities (Tepordei, 1999, 2001).Rates of aggregate production, use and mine permit approval in the mid-Atlantic region differ by population density. These rates are influenced by economic and human factors, such as demand, costs, land availability and community opposition. In some areas, the local availability of aggregate is limited. This is due to the lack of suitable local source materials for aggregate, the loss of potential high-quality aggregate resource production sites by preemptive land development and restrictive zoning (resource sterilization), and the difficulty of developing and permitting production sites for aggregate.

SME’s Arizona Conference was held at the Doubletree Hotel at Reid Park in Tucson on Dec. 5and 6, 2004. The annual conference is organized by the Arizona Conference Board of Directors, which represents SME sections in Arizona and adjacent areas. The conference provides an opportunity for individuals and corporations associated with mining in the region to get together each year to discuss the status of the industry. The meeting featured a keynote address and more than30 technical papers. Two years ago, the U.S. copper industry was facing on a run for two years now,” and “both precious metal and base metal prices are going up.” The increases in metal prices were attributed to development in China and other Asian countries. “With a population of 1.6 billion, China has recently created 80 million jobs,” said Silver.

This paper describes various mitigation methods in order to reduce the maximum acceleration of the floorboard of hulled vehicles when explosive charges buried in water saturated sand were detonated beneath them. The effects on floorboard acceleration of adding a vehicle hull, several types of floorboard bracing, the use of foam to fill the gap between the floorboard and hull, and the use of foam to isolate the floorboard from the hull have been investigated. Small scale testing was conducted, which used bar magnet velocity gages to measure the velocity as a function of time of the center of the floorboard, directly over the charge, where the acceleration was expected to be greatest.

"Exploration results over three overburden drilling anomalies defined by the Ontario Geological Survey in 1981 in the Kirkland Lake area, Ontario are presented. The anomalies come from lowland areas where overburden is thickest. By mapping the bedrock and surficial geology, by prospecting, humus sampling and shallow till sampling over the surrounding upland surfaces, one can initially evaluate such overburden drill anomalies without costly reverse circulation drilling. The drilling should follow, if necessary, only after surficial base data has been obtained. Preliminary work on these three properties has defined the presence of at least two styles of gold mineralization. One occurs in silicified zones in intermediate volcanics closely associated with northwesterly trending faults and shear zones. The second occurs in quartz-carbonate alternation zones in volcanics intruded by quartz-feldspar porphyry dykes. IntroductionThe three examples presented in this paper present first-hand information on an approach to the follow up of several geochemical anomalies that were found by the Ontario Geological Survey when they carried out reverse circulation overburden drilling as part of the Kirkland Lake Initiative Program (KLIP) in 1980 (Routledge et al., 1981). The initial approach is relatively simple, systematic, and cost and technically effective. It readies the properties for further exploration, or conversely, it could downgrade the properties as viable gold targets."

The expert system component of Knowledge Base System supports the analysis and interpretation phases of ventilation design with an algorithmic program used for the solution of alternate design. The paper describes the ?ES-VENT? knowledge based system developed at Central Mining Research Institute, Dhanbad, India for an on-line diagnosing of the ventilation problems using the ?IITMRULE? expert system development tool. In the ?IITMRULE? expert system tool, it has been decided to use a backward chaining reasoning process to reach the goal state i.e. the final conclusion. ES-VENT system is made of three modules: On-line Data, Diagnostics and KBS. Each module is being a collection of several programs. The paper mainly deals with the parameters affecting the ventilation of underground mines such as air-velocity, air pressure, temperature, dust, and humidity and gas contents. The graphical presentation of these parameters on the computer and the interactive part of the developed program is expected to help a ventilation officer to determine the changes in a ventilation circuit necessary to bring the mine ventilation to the desired value. Once such changes are physically effected, the display will indicate if the changes have brought the desired effect or not on ventilation.
