The greenstone belt developed along the Sandawana line, an anastomosing, transcrustal shear zone. The lode gold is concentrated in veins and along brittle-ductile shear zones and other faults. Gold contents of 200 rock samples were found to be well below economically significant levels, excluding purely syngenetic deposit formation. Average gold content of unmineralised banded iron formation decreases from 7.3 ppb in the east (Manica) to 1.6 ppb in the west (Odzi), where depletion reflects hydrothermal leaching. The mineralising fluids may have been generated during deep crustal deformation, metamorphism and magmatism. Gold was hydrothermally deposited during carbonatisation and sericitisation of ultramafic and mafic rocks and during hydrothermal overprinting of banded iron formation and felsic rocks. It is present in native form and as microscopic to submicroscopic inclusions in pyrite, arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite. Argentiferous galena and other sulphides are commonly observed. Rezende, which produced over 38 t Au, is hosted by a granodiorite stock. By-product gold was produced from Cu-Ni sulphides at Mundonguara. The deposits are related to the older, but not the younger, of the granitoids intruding the belt's supracrustal sequences; the estimated age of mineralisation is 2700-2600 Ma. Odzi district, with 61 mines, has produced only 3.5 t Au as its higher-level host rocks have apparently been eroded. Mutare (formerly Umtali) district, with 133 mines and 9 placers, has produced 68 t Au (65 t from Rezende and adjacent deposits), and Manica district, with 23 mines and 8 placers, 12 t Au. "A numerical algorithm is described for the simultaneous prediction of the thermomechanical behavior of the materials and microstructure evolption during metal forging. The numerical development is based on the finite element solution of the thermoviscoplastic deformation of metals coupled with the internal state variable model describing the microstructure evolution involving work hardening, recovery, recrystallization and grain size distribution. The finite element code for rigid viscoplastic deformation is developed based on the modification of the existing code for the thermal and fluid flow calculations. The code is tested against and compares well with the results reported in literature. The procedures for the integration of the · rnicrostructure model into the macro finite element model are described. Results are presented showing the characteristics of materials dynamics and mechanical deformation during simple metal forging processes.IntroductionIn industrial deformation processes such as hot rolling and forging, the workpiece undergoes both macroscopic plastic deformations and microstructural evolution. A computer model that allows to predict both materials dynamics and macroscopic deformation is obviously more useful for both fundamental understanding and deformation process optimization. For some industrial applications, especially those involving novel, light and high strength materials, such an integrated model is critical in that both materials and thermomechanical 'behavior during forging must be carefully controlled to obtain the products that meet the desired strength requirement [I]."

Additional field evaluations of a modified continuous miner using a new spray system and modified scrubbers have been conducted by the authors. In this demonstration, a comprehensive package for dust control on a continuous miner which included previously developed modifications to the scrubber, scrubber intakes and the innovative chassis spray system was demonstrated. Side-by-side comparisons of the modified miner and regular miner indicated that the miner operator with the modified miner was exposed to 62% less respirable dust. Ram car operators with the modified miner had 38% less respirable dust exposure and the return air on the modified miner had 19% less respirable dust. The mining conditions during side-by-side testing were very comparable. These results support the findings of the modified spray system studies conducted earlier at different mines in Illinois on four occasions and the modified scrubber system field evaluation studies.

OVERPOLED copper, as commonly defined, is copper which has been excessively reduced during the poling period of the refining process. Owing to its porosity, such copper is unfit for commercial purposes. The cause of this phenomenon is undoubtedly the lack of oxides in the copper, yet this does not completely explain it. Refined copper of the same "pitch" and "set" varies considerably in oxygen contents, and analyses of overpoled bars also show similar wide differences; moreover, it is possible to melt copper in crucibles so as to obtain bars that are practically free from oxygen although they show a "tough pitch" and "level set" surface. Frederick Johnson advances the following theory: The regulation of the quantity of oxygen in copper is the keynote of all copper refining. It is the presence of a Well defined proportion of oxygen in the form of cuprous oxide, forming a copper-cuprous oxide eutectic, Which enables copper to be cast free from blowholes. It seems that When oxygen is present, other gases are less soluble in molten copper; When oxygen is absent, or is present in insufficient quantity, the copper dissolves other gases, such as hydrogen and carbon monoxide, Which are insoluble in the copper when solid, and, being rejected during the process of solidification, causes internal porosity and external ridges and excrescences.1 The "level set" of Wire bars, etc., is entirely the result of a compromise between the occluded gases and cuprous oxide. With excess of the former the metal would be "overpitch" and spongy, While an excess of the latter would result in the metal being "underpitch" and brittle.2 The result of the absorption and subsequent expulsion of reducing gases, carbon monoxide and hydrogen, and the effect of this action. on the overpoling of copper are in dispute; the literature on the subject is full of contradictory statements and will continue to be so until better analytical methods have been developed. Sulphur, however, is tangible. The refiner can see it in his button sample and consequently attributes to it any trouble that may happen during the melting of the copper.

The two candidates in the upcoming presidential election in the United States each say that they have their own solution to the nation?s energy problems - solutions that will increase the amount of energy available, lessen the nation?s dependence on foreign sources and reduce the amount of pollution released to the atmosphere. Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama and Republican candidate Sen. John McCain both advocate research funding for coal-to-liquids and clean coal technologies. McCain also supports increased oil and gas drilling offshore. And Obama has even made some noises in that direction, although his plan leans heavily on the increased use of renewable energy sources. The energy debate is not new to this election. Congress and whichever party is in the White House has for years been trying to craft a comprehensive energy policy. One difference in this latest debate is that the increased use of nuclear energy has gained more attention. Current President George W. Bush has said he favors the increased use of nuclear power as part of the nation?s energy package. And McCain said he supports the building of more nuclear power plants. Obama has not said much about that. The American public is also showing signs of changing its stance on nuclear energy. To be sure, images of Three Mile Island and Chernobyl are still alive in some minds. However, the American public has said it wants cheaper energy and they want it produced more cleanly. With nuclear, the nation can have both. In the United States, nuclear accounts for slightly less than 20 percent of the electrical power used (see interview with Gary Steele of Energy Fuels on page 27). Globally, that figure is about 15 percent. And there are several nations that derive better than half of their power from nuclear sources. Add to that the world?s increasing need for more energy and the future of nuclear is bright.

The pigments, whose colors are due primarily to iron exides and iron hydroxides, comprise a variety of yellow, brown, red, and sometimes black paint-coloring agents, both natural and artificially prepared. The natural pigments in this group include ocher, umber, sienna, mineral paints, paint rock, and mortar colors. When the natural color or tinting power--either in the raw state or after treatment--is too weak, these pigments may be "forti- fied" or strengthened. Ocher, umber, and sienna, rhile often described as "iron oxide pigments," are also known as "earthy" rigments. Inasmuch as the iron content of these pigments is, in general, somewhat lower than that of other iron oxide pigments, the ochers, umbers, siennes, and other brown earth pigments are not discussed in the present paper. In addition to a discussion of natural or artificial pigments whose color is due to the presence of iron oxide in some form, this paper contains data on mortar colors, which are medium or low grade pigments used for tinting mortar, cement, and concrete. A great variety of materials are used for theso purposes, including "blue billy" (residue left from roast- ing pyrite), ground slate and shale, and even culm from coal washeries. Dur- ing the past three years, there has been a definite trend among the producers of iron oxide pigments to push the sales of the better grades of colors for tinting mortars. Due to the amount of low-grade coloring matter that is re- quired to impart a strong color to concrete (in soro cases as high as 15 per cent of pigment is necessary) the strength of the cement may be materially impaired. The addition of some 2 per cent of the higher grades of iron oxide to the concrete mix imparts a brighter and stronger colcr, does not weaken the material, and in the end is not as expensive as the low-grade pigments formerly used. Iron oxide pigments occur in nature in various shades and colors, but the red pigments are the most important and account for the larger part of the total red pigments used.3/ The nomenclature of these red pigments is involved and the names given to them are descriptive of the shade rather than of origin, method of produc- tion or chemical composition. In most cases the red pigments under this class may occur naturally or may be produced by heating hydrous iron oxide pigments such as yellow ocher to a sufficiently high temperature to drive off the water of composition. They may also be prepared by fortifying naturally-occurring pigments with stronger natural or synthetic oxides or with coal-tar dyes (e.g. alizarine lake), Most of the mineral reds derive their color from the presence of ferric oxide (Fe2O3), the mineral hematite. This may be present in relatively small percentages, as in the red slates and shales, or it may constitute as much as 90 per cent or more of the material, as in Spanish red. The principal iron oxide pigments used in the manufacture of paint are discussed in the following pages.

Forecasts prepared by the B.C. Research Council for the National Harbours Board suggest that mineral shipments through B.C. Lower Mainland port facilities will increase more than four-fold, from 6 to about 25 million tons, during the decade 1965 to 1975. The longer term outlook is for a six-fold increase to about 35 million tons by 1985. In 1967, minerais accounted for more than one-third of the total deep-sea traffic tonnage, nearly as much as grain. By 1975, the minerals' share will be about half the total. The principal items are exports of potash from Saskatchewan, and of coal and sulphur from Alberta and British Columbia. Additional exports include copper and other mineral concentrates and propane. Imports are chiefly salt and phosphate rock. Coastal traffic in such items as cement, sand and grave!, and limestone totalled 3.3 mil-lion tons in 1967. They will continue to be of major importance, but do not have the spectacular growth potential of the deep-sea traffic.

A South African gold mining rock-related fatal accident database has been analysed in order to determine rock-related fatality trends in the gold mining industry over the period 1990 to 1998. This analysis was extended further to include some of the individual reefs mined and focused particularly on the Carbon Leader Reef, the Ventersdorp Contact Reef, the Vaal Reef and the Basal Reef. Rock-related accident locations are also presented. A stope rock-related risk is proposed, where the fatality rate in terms of rock-related fatalities per million square metres mined for the gold mining industry as a whole is compared to individual reefs, allowing a stope rock-related risk to be attributed to the individual reef. This comparison is extended further by removing the contribution by the reef being evaluated from the industry data, thereby allowing this reef to be directly compared to the rest of the industry with respect to a stope rock-related risk.

This paper presents the processes of investigation, analysis, design, construction and monitoring of soil nail stabilisation work to facilitate a 14.5 m deep excavation at an uncontrolled fill ground. An extensive instrumentation programme had been implemented to monitor the performance of the stabilisation solution, to provide validation for the designed nail resistance and groundwater variation. From the monitoring results, it was proved that the soil nail stabilisation technique is effective for loose saturated fill provided that substantial care is taken during implementation. Construction difficulties, solutions to overcome the problems and lessons learned will be discussed in the paper.

Dissociation and vaporization of gold chlorides and bromides were investigated by a static pressure method and by Knudsen cell mass spectrometer. Two distinct chlorine and three distinct bromine pressure-temperature relation-ships were observed for the respective salts. The chlorine pressures are attributed to the dissociation of Au2Cl6 and Au2C12, and the bromine pressures to the dissociation of Au2Br6, Au2Br4, and AU2Br2, These pressure-temperature relationships were used to calculate dissociation pressure equations, enthalpies, and entropies of dissociation for each salt. Mass analysis of the vapors over AU2Cls between 83° and 152° C confirmed the existence of gaseous AU2C16. Ionization potential of this molecule is 11.0±0.1 ev and enthalpy of vaporization is 28.l±2.0 kcal/mole. Mass analysis of the vapors over the gold bromides detected only Bra in the temperature range 15°-150° C.

THE Polaris-Taku mine is a new gold property, situated in the far north-west corner of British Columbia. Production was started in November, 1937, at the rate of 150 tons a day, and recently has been increased to 200 tons. The property, which promises to become one of British Columbia's important gold mines, was developed and brought into production in twenty-nine months after work was started on it as a virtual prospect in June, 1935, by Edward C. Congdon and associates. Inaccessibility, extraordinarily complicated geological problems, and difficult metallurgy retarded development of the property before acquisition by the present interests, an::l, in fact, discouraged two companies that had spent substantial sums upon it from continuing development. This paper is concerned with reviewing the development of the property and describing the principal features of the geology, the mining and metallurgical practices, and the equipment employed. "A 2400 acre extension to the existing Tailings Area is under development at Inco's Copper Cliff Milling operations.The new area is being developed in stages as production levels dictate thus minimizing immediate capital expenditures while permitting disposal operations to proceed as further site work progresses.The first stage of the new storage site will be fully operational by early 1987 and will include a 400 acre site specific to the storage of Pyrrhotite rejected from milling circuits. The Pyrrhotite site is located in the centre of the Tailings area and is designed for water cover throughout much of its projected life.The new development incorporates perimeter dams designed to operate with low phreatic levels for maximum structural stability. Acid seepage water is collected behind secondary impermeable dams for return to the Tailings Pond.Tailings are deposited by up-stream methods permitting segregation of coarse fractions for use in future lifts of the perimeter dams."

LKAB’s Kiruna Mine, located in northern Sweden, produces about 24 Mton of iron ore yearly using sublevel caving. For efficiency, the mine must deliver planned quantities of three ore products. We use mixed integer programming to schedule Kiruna’s operations, specifically, which production blocks should be mined, and when they should be mined to minimize deviations from planned production quantities while adhering to mining restrictions (e.g., sequencing). A new production block database and a well-formulated mixed integer programming model dramatically reduce the size of the original problem; in less than ten minutes we generate five-year schedules with time fidelity of months.

The viscosities and the infrared spectra of the CaO-SiO2-MgO-CaF2(or Al2O3) slags were measured to enhance our understanding of the interrelationship among the thermophysical property, microscopic structure, and chemical thermodynamics of molten slags. The structural role of CaF2and Al2O3in the calcium silicate melts can be explained by a change of the degree of polymerization (DOP). The effect of CaF2on the viscous flow of molten slags is based on a decrease in the DOP by F-as well as by O2-ions and this was confirmed by the infrared (IR)spectra of the quenched slags. The effect of Al2O3on viscosity increase can be understood from an increase in the DOP by the incorporation of the [AlO4]-tetrahedra into the [SiO4]-tetrahedral units and this was also confirmed by the IR spectra. An amphoteric behaviour of Al2O3in the aluminosilicate melts could be correlated to the effect of ionic species of alumina, that is [AlO4]-tetrahedra and [AlO6]-octahedra, on the stability of silicate polyanions by taking the activity coefficients of slag components into account. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Baiyinnuo’er Zn-Pb deposit is a typical skarn deposit in NE China. Skarn and orebodies mainly occur between different units of the Lower Permian Huanggangliang Formation carbonates-sandstone-mudstone or within the contact between intrusions and marble. Skarn minerals are dominated by prograde garnet and clinopyroxene, and the main ore minerals are sphalerite and galena. We conducted single fluid inclusion compositional studies using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry on clinopyroxene (pre-ore-stage mineral) and sphalerite and calcite (syn-ore-stage minerals). The results show that the Baiyinnuo’er fluids are distinctly different from basinal brine but similar to magmatic fluid, thereby indicating that the deposit has a dominantly magmatic origin. This interpretation has also been supported by the Cl/Br mole ratios, which remain stable (~500) in different fluid stages. The decreases for most of the elements in the fluid inclusions from pre-ore-stage clinopyroxene to syn-ore-stage sphalerite and calcite suggest that mixing with groundwater has occurred during mineralisation, with significant Zn, Pb and Ag deposition.CITATION:Shu, Q, Hammerli, J, Chang, Z, Lai, Y and Huizenga, J-M, 2015. The Bureau of Mines has sought clarification of the Ti-TiN system by studying the phases formed by diffusion reactions between titanium and titanium nitride. Reaction couples were prepared by embedding pockets of TiN powder in arc-melted buttons of titanium. Specimens were vacuum annealed at nominal temperatures of 800°, 950°, 1,200°, and 1,500° C. Metallographically mounted cross sections from reacted specimens and from some that were not annealed were examined optically, with an electron microprobe, with an election microscope, and by X-ray diffraction. Each annealed specimen contained a segregated core primarily of d-phase material, an ?-phase diffusion layer, an a-phase diffusion layer, and host metal. On the basis of corresponding microprobe analyses, and considering results of certain other research, a new phase diagram is proposed. It contains no qualitative innovations, only quantitative adjustments. Results were also analyzed from the viewpoint of diffusion behavior. Diffusion coefficients calculated for the ? phase were sufficiently scattered that the parameters are very tentative. Nevertheless, the diffusion behavior reported is in reasonable agreement with one of two prior studies if it is assumed that the earlier investigators were mistaken in their identification of the nitride phase in which the diffusion occurred.

"An important, function of the U.S. Bureau of Mines is to instruct miners in first aid, and as a means of promoting interest in it first-aid contests are held under the auspices of the Bureau, usually in coop; ration with other interested organizations, especially the American Red Cross, the National Safety Council and various operators' and Miners' associations. It was early found that the method of judging first-aid meets is one of the most vital factors in determining the degree of success of the meet.It may be safely stated that there is no method for the judging of first-aid contests that has proved ideal. A method that would give the most uniform judging would necessitate the rating of each team by the same judge or committee of judges and, in order that a judge may rate a team satisfactorily, he should see that team perform several events and average the ratings. Such a procedure is not practicable where there are many terms entered in the contest, as it would prolong the meet indefinitely. To overcome this objection the method has been tried of assigning separate judges to each team but this brings in a new factor the individuality of the various judges, some of whom rate closely, others loosely. The next development was to average the judging by having the judges rate different teams for each event. This would seem to solve the problem out it has been found, after using the method over a wide area for a considerable period of time, that the differences in the judging are too marked to be at all satisfactory. The next development was to appoint a committee of chief judges three to five in number especially trained and experienced, to aid the individual judges in rating the teams. This method has proved satisfactory at small meets but, as committee must review the work of each judge on each event, it has not been deemed feasible for a large meet."

The twenty-fourth of a series of semiannual surveys pertaining to motor gasoline marketed in the United States was made by the Bureau of Mines in August, 1931, The first part of a report giving the results of that survey as they pertain to specification data is given in this paper. A companion report, Part II, is in preparation and will discuss the results off other determinations made on the samples, including octane number ratings on the individual samples (to be made by the Bureau of Standards) and results of the determination of gravity, color, doctor test, and "gum" content by the copper dish method and the Bureau of Mines steam-oven method. This instrument was used extensively during the World War for detecting enemy digging and mining operations, by means of the vibrations transmitted through the earth strata.A preliminary investigation using short wave-length (200 to 300 meters) radio equipment carried out jointly with engineers of the Westinghouse Electric & Mfg, Co. during 1922.The step was to investigate ground conduction signaling, (called T.P.S. in Signal Corps parlance)."

This modern plant consists of a battery of 72 Otto Wilputte Compound Under-jet Ovens with extensive plant for the recovery by-products. The ovens produce 9000 tons of furnace coke per week together with some 17,000,000 cub. ft. of coke oven gas, which is used for heating purposes throughout the works and for heating the ovens.Coal is supplied from the, company's colliel'ies and is stored under a Coal Handling Bridge of 264 ft. span and 365 ft. overall, capable of handling 250 tons per hour. The coal storage space of 1600 ft. can. be extended to a maximum of 2800 ft.Preparation of the coal for coking involves fine grinding which is carried out as follows:-Coal is dumped from rail waggons on to a conveyer belt which delivers it to a 12 ft. x 22 ft. Bradford Breaker, with a capacity of 400 tons per hour. The coal, then approximately 4 in. in size, passes, to the mixing bins; and after careful blending is reduced in the,hammer mills to a fineness suitable for the ovens.The fire coal is elevated to the main storage bin over the battery for subsequent charging by electric larry car. The average cokingtime is 15 hrs. 36 mins. At the end of ,this period the doors, are removed and the coke pushed from the oven by a mm. The coke, is, then quenched with fresh, water and sent to the Blast Furnace in 50-ton Copper Waggons.The gas is exhausted from the ovens by Brown Boveri turbine, exhausters of 23,000. cub, ft, per min. capacity. Exhaust steam from these is used for various. purposes in the By-Product plant. After removing the last traces of tar by Electrostatic Precipitators', the gas is bubbled through sulphuric acid, the ammonia forming ammonium sulphate, which is subsequently washed, dried and bagged for sa,le as a fertilizer. The gas then goes to the Benzol Scrubber Towers, where benzol and other derivatives are recovered and later redistilled and purified. The cleaned gas is then piped to the main works for heating purposes, being used with tar to fire the steel furnaces, and also the soaking pits and reheating furnaces.BLAST FURNACES.The company is at present operating two Blast Furnaces of 800, and 1000 tons nominal daily capacity respectively.
