Recent events demonstrate that civil and government facilities and structures face an ever-increasing need to be designed for protection against malevolent explosions. Modification of existing public structures and especially design of new ones increasingly includes provisions for explosive protection. ISEE members endorse and promote responsible application of explosives to benefit mankind and deplore any other use. However, our knowledge of explosive behavior and our ability to predict the results of explosive events puts us in a unique position to give guidance to designers of civil and public structures. Recent advances in computational methods have resulted in new computer codes with ALE (arbitrary lagrangian eulerian) simulation capabilities. Historically, lagrangian computational methods have been used for modeling solids because the mesh or discretization moves with the material. Rock breakage resulting from explosively induced shock-waves has been successfully modeled with lagrangian codes. Explosive detonation has traditionally been modeled with eulerian techniques. Eulerian methods have been used to model gases and fluids, tracking the material as it moves through the computational grid. ALE computational technology couples the two methods together in a manner never before possible. An ALE simulation can accurately treat the explosive detonation, interaction of explosive gases with air, and the impact of explosive event on nearby solid structures. ALEGRA (Budge et al. 1997 a & b) is an ALE code developed at Sandia National Laboratories. ALEGRA simulations accurately predict the explosively induced impulse on the structure to be protected. It has been applied to the analysis and design of blastwalls to protect structures and people from explosive events. The impulse calculated can be used by structural engineers to design a blastwall. ALEGRA has also been applied to predict the effect of a blastwall on explosion overpressure some distance behind the blastwall to assess the effect on people present during the event.

Normal practice in the mining industry is the creation of a single geological model. These models provide a single interpretation of the geological and mineralisation domains. These interpretations infer the exact behaviour of ore domain contacts at shorter scales when resource definition drilling is done on wider scales and are thus locally highly uncertain. The interpreted geological model provides a single number for the volume and tonnes of mineralised material enclosed by the mineralisation envelope. It is on this single number for volume and tonnage that capital intensive mine development decisions (mine design and scheduling, stockpile strategy, waste management, closure planning, dewatering strategy, product quality, etc) are based. Some of these decisions require knowledge of grade variability for small volumes of material such as quarterly production periods. It is generally recognised that this information cannot be derived from single kriged geological models, but can potentially be modelled by conditional simulation techniques. Uncertainty in the extent and continuity of the mineralised envelope and its effect on grade variability for shorter production periods is thus recognised as a major source of uncertainty in new mine development.CITATION:Jewbali, A, Boyle, C and Phillips, J, 2013. A LARGE proportion of the coke used is made in the by-product oven from the high-volatile coals mined in the adjacent district. At the beginning it was feared good by-product blast-furnace coke could not be made with our coals. By experimenting with various mixtures of coals, coking time, oven design, and coking temperatures, much has already been accomplished. The results show that a hard, dense coke, not easily broken by handling, can be produced. In its present state it is not all that could be desired, but it is being constantly improved. Such coke has been used alone as the fuel on several of the blast furnaces producing the highest daily production in the Pittsburgh district. Many of the coals in the Pittsburgh district when coked in the by-product oven yield a gas which contains a high percentage of sulfur, which is objection- able for many metallurgical operations. As this fuel is gradually replacing the ideal fuel, natural gas, which is becoming less plentiful, studies are being made of the best methods for purification. Some metallurgists believe sulfur to be a very injurious element in steel. Recent investigations by Government bureaus, scientific bodies and private firms, seem to indicate that a reasonable amount of sulfur may exist in steel without detriment. This Country Documentation Report presents the development of economic indices for the Philippines for the period from 1970 through 1981. The work was done through the Bureau of Mines, Minerals Availability Program, under Contract number J01225001. This contract calls for the development of twelve index time series describing factor input costs in the mining sector of 95 countries. The twelve index time series describe the costs of: 1) mining wages, 2) construction wages, 3) equipment and repair parts, 4) bits and related steel, 5) eimber and lumber, 6) fuel, 7) powder and balsting agents, 8) tires, 9) construction materials, 10) industrial materials, 11) transportation, and 12) electrical power. These indices combined with weight factors being developed by the personnel of the Minerals Availability Field Office (MAFO) of the Bureau of Mines in Denver, Colorado, will be used to perform instantaneous updates of all costs relating to the mining industry. The indices were developed primarily for use in the Bureau's Minerals Availability Program in assessing the worldwide availability of nonfuel minerals.

This progress report on a national survey of the use of detachable bits in metal mines covers 10 mines. It presents comparative costs for drilling with conventional and detachable bits, describes the reconditioning of drill steel, and gives various data on rock drilling at these particular mines. Reports to follow will include similar data on drilling at other metal mines in the United States. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This report is based on costs and data developed and furnished by the operators of the mines visited. Studies to enhance the FLSmidth forced air machine through changes in the design, showed important improvements through changes in the number of Rotor blades, stator designs, rotor air distribution and other designs features. The main outcomes from this study highlighted that increasing the number of rotor blades increased the selectivity while decreasing power requirements while stators with slots have better results in terms of recovery, flotation efficiency and selectivity than without slots.Also the rotor air distribution makes a difference in the design when comparing different distribution criteria whilst keeping all features of shape and number of blades etc constant. At the most efficient rotor air distribution design, copper recovery reached one of the highest values while keeping good selectivity. The possible explanation for that is the increase in the pump capacity indicated by the increase in the specific power.It was seen as significant that reduction in specific power for some designs tested compared with the then current standard design had an average of 30% less power consumption.As a result, FLSmidth was able to identify new designs that decreased power and improved recovery, as well as, identifying some designs that specifically improved fine and/or coarse particle recovery.CITATION:Silva, R, Caldwell, K, Bell, D, Olson, T and Vianna, S, 2013. Beginning in 1987, miniature dataloggers approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) were publicly available for sale. The principal among these was the model CR21XQM, manufactured by Campbell Scientific, Inc. These dataloggers had been tested and were deemed permissible by MSHA and thus could be installed in the return air of an underground coal mine. In 1996, production of all permissible Campbell Scientific dataloggers ceased due to lack of sales. Data collection with these dataloggers has been a staple of ground control research in the United States for decades, and, without them, or a replacement, the capability to monitor ground behavior is severely impacted. Since that time, any party requiring a permissible datalogger has needed to borrow one that was purchased during the production years. In order to fill this technology gap and ensure its own data-gathering capabilities, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed and refined its own miniature data acquisition system (MIDAS). On February 16, 2010, MSHA deemed the MIDAS to be permissible and approved it for use in the return air of an underground coal mine. The MIDAS is an intrinsically safe, 16- or 24-bit datalogger, compatible with a wide range of resistive, single-ended, and differential-type instrumentation. It contains enough data storage memory to operate for over a year with typical data rates and is efficient enough to do this on a single C-sized alkaline battery for that entire period. It is menu-driven and requires no programming knowledge to operate. It supports wireless or hardwired communication for datalogger setup and data download. This paper describes the design, field and laboratory testing, and capabilities of the MIDAS datalogger. While not as fully -functioned as the CR21XQM, it is the only new permissible datalogger available, and there is intent to make it available to the mining industry for purchase.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Mining Engineering) degree The Union Section of Anglo Platinum is situated ±18 km west of the town of Northam on the north-western rim of the Bushveld Igneous Complex. Both the Merensky and UG2 reefs are mined. Support of the Merensky stoping areas with rock bolts is specifically problematic due to the stoping width restrictions varying around 90 cm. The installation equipment of in-stope rock bolts and the effectiveness thereof in the Merensky stoping areas was critically evaluated. In order to do this a background research on the need for better on-the-face support had to be conducted. The need for improving the rock bolt drilling and the equipment had to be investigated and the financial implications and justifications for the improved equipment examined. To conduct the search an overall study was done on the rockfalls and safety aspects throughout the platinum industry in South Africa and specifically Union Section. It was found that most of the rock falls in the Merensky stoping areas of which ± 70% are less than 1.2 m in thickness generally occurs within 4 m from the face and causes ± 60% of the in-stope injuries. Serious shortcomings had been identified with respect to the airleg, rock drill machine and the drill steels used in the drilling of the rock bolt holes. Through experimentation, using a testing frame built for this purpose on surface and with the co-operation of mine staff and suppliers, a number of possible modifications were identified and tested. This resulted in the final product with which it was possible to drill a 1.2 m hole in the hangingwall of the stopes ranging with an angle to the hanging from 90° for a 90 cm stoping width and 67° for a 80 cm stoping width. It is confidently concluded that this system will effectively improve the total face support and result in a substantial reduction of rock falls and consequently the occurrence of injuries and fatalities in the Merensky stoping areas. The installation of rock bolts on the face with the modified drilling equipment will increase the direct support, but the system has a potential of a substantial reduction in the profile stick support density and an increase in productivity in the stoping areas due to fewer occurrences of rock falls. It was finally concluded that effective modifications to the drilling equipment for rock bolt in-hole drilling could be made and the installation thereof in the stope face is adequately justified.

The borides of the transition metals in Groups IV and VI exhibit, in addition to a certain degree of hardness, considerable resistance to heat and oxidation. They have high melting points (1,850°-3,060° C.) and low coefftcients of thermal expansion and can be bonded with other materials and hot-pressed to desired shape (cermets). Suggested uses for the borides include use in rockets and jet engines, as thermocouple protection tubes, as containers for molten metals in die casting, as flame-plated coatings on less refractory compositions to prevent erosion by hot gases, and as control rods and neutron shielding material in nuclear engineering, The Federal Bureau of Mines investigation of zirconium diboride started in 1950 at the Boulder City Nev,, Metallurgy Research Laboratory, Its purpose was to reduce the cost of raw materials for the production of zirconium diboride.

One of these is WG12, ?Use of Shotcrete?, of which the author is a member. The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to a number of topics that were discussed at the WG12 meetings held in April and September 2008; and also to a number of other matters that arose from the presentation of thirty-four papers at the 5th International Symposium on Sprayed Concrete held in Lillehammer, Norway between 21 and 24 April 2008.

Field studies of the radiations backscattered by iron ores from a 60Co source of primary gamma radiation located in a borehole logging probe have confirmed thatthe P" factor, a ratio of high energy gamma ray intensities to low energy intensities in selected energy windows of the backscattered gamma-ray spectrum, is a valuable measure of grade for sedimentary iron ores of the Pilbararegion of Western Australia.Laboratory studies of model boreholes have shown that variations in borehole diameter and variations in bulk density of the formations have a significant influence on the measurement of P" ratios. If these influences 'are taken into account the mean ore grade in a new blast hole, for instance, can be predicted with a probe of suitable configuration to within 0·8 per cent Fe at the 95 per cent confidence level, while the grade of a single 120-cm split can be determined to within 2·6 per cent Fe. These results were obtained by pooling data from five blast holes covering the range of iron concentrations 20-68 per cent Fe and apply to the mean hole grades 54-68 per cent Fe.Results for two development holes were generally comparable to those obtained from individual blast holes95 per cent confidence limits of ±0·9 per cent Fe for mean ore grade and ± 4·1 per cent Fe for single splits. A greater number of data points is needed before these confidence limits can be further improved.The technique utilized to obtain these results was derived from a "multiband" approach to collection of backscattered spectral intensity data, an approach which permitted selection at the data processing stage of the most statistically significant P" ratios for the type of mineralization encountered in the field. The multiband technique also permitted selection of the most significant of another set of windows in the backscattered gammarayspectrum to measure a newly developed "S-factor", a ratio sensitive to borehole diameter. Another window provided information on bulk density. All these measurements were made with a single pass of the same loggingprobe.

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralization related to mafic and ultramafic rocks held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. The principles of shear-driven aggregation of particulate matter suspended in fluids, a common industrial method of concentration and separation, were applied to a convecting magma to estimate the time required to sparge or strip the PGE and Cr content and concentrate it into the boundary layers. It was calculated that an ore-grade (e.g. 6 ppm PGE) boundary layer about 1 m thick would require 100 000 years at most to form from a body of magma 500 m deep with a PGE content of 20 ppb. Since concentration would be most vigorous when the magma was warmest, at least half of this concentration would take place in the first 10 000 years. The effect of dispersive pressure in the boundary layer would generate a concentration high of refractories just below the top of each boundary layer and another just above the bottom. If the magma was a double-diffusive system, it might evolve by the downward cascade of enriched boundary-layer material into the hotter, lower magma layers, where depending on saturation levels chromites would equilibrate and sulphides undergo partial or total resorption, enriching PGE levels in any remaining sulphides. This cascade process would in time greatly enrich the lower regions in PGE-bearing sulphides and chromites

In order to determine the potential availability of alumina to feed U.S. aluminum smellers, the Bureau of Mines evaluated 39 domestic mines and deposits of bauxite, alunite, and high-alumina clays and found that substantial increases in alumina prices would be necessary before nonbauxitic deposits could become competitive with bauxite. As part of the study, a price-tonnage relationship was developed indicating the quantity of alumina that could be produced from known deposits at various alumina prices and at a 15-pct discounted cash flow rate of return on the required capital investment. All capital and operating costs were calculated in August 1980 dollars. The domestic bauxite reserve base comprises three operating bauxite mines in Arkansas containing some 15.6 million metric tons of recoverable alumina (A1203). Ferruginous bauxites, clays, and alunites fall into the subeconomic category of identified aluminum resources, which, at the demonstrated level, contain over 4,000 million metric tons of alumina that are estimated to be recoverable. Analyses indicate that, at the demonstrated resource level, a total of some 15.6 million metric tons of alumina, all from three active Arkansas bauxite mines, is recoverable at a 1980 price of $0.12 per pound ($264 per metric ton) of alumina. A price of approximately $0.26 per pound ($573 per metric ton) of alumina would be required for production of the total U.S. resource. Thus, unless new technological breakthroughs occur that could make alternate sources of alumina competitive with bauxite, U.S. dependence upon imported bauxite will continue to increase.

Characterisation and Processing of Electronic Waste for the Recovery of Metal Values Electronic waste (e-waste), which is a hazardous waste, can indeed be a good source of metal values especially for Cu, Pb, Sn including the precious metals such as Au, Ag, etc. In the present work a protocol for sorting and disassembly of e-waste consisting of computers, TV sets and mobile phones, as well as the characterisation and processing are investigated. E-waste consists of assorted materials consisting of metals, plastics and polymers, ceramics and glass. These components are classified into nine categories. The components, in which metal is embedded into non-metallic base, require complete pulverisation for liberation of the metal. The liberation size is observed to be around 1 mm. Several stages of crushing, shearing and shredding and grinding are required to achieve the required feed size. It is evident from detailed chemical analysis that the pulverised particulate is quite rich in metal values. Computer waste has 23 per cent metal by weight with over six per cent Cu while TV waste has 20 per cent metal with about 4.5 per cent Cu. Mobile phones are much richer in metal content with about 56 per cent metal including 32 per cent Cu in it. Metal content is observed to be more significant in the larger size classes and Pb and Cd are found to be the major contaminants. Morphological studies show that a substantial fraction of the particles is flat or elongated. Based on detailed characterisation, a flowsheet is developed involving dry and wet methods to separate the metallic materials from the plastics physically. It is established that according to this flowsheet a metal rich fraction with over 90 per cent recovery of the metal values can be achieved. Considering the relatively inexpensive unit operations involved in the flowsheet it is envisaged that it would provide a commercially viable scheme for processing large tonnage of e-waste.

The era of Hatch in Africa has seen the doubling of furnace power in retrofit projects using existing crucibles to developing the highest intensity immersed electrode operations in the world. This has resulted in minimized OPEX and CAPEX per unit of production. Through the continued development of its cooling, binding and furnace power supply technologies and working with the experienced and knowledgeable personnel at the smelting facilities in Africa, Hatch has managed to meet the challenges of ever increasing furnace process requirements associated with increased power density and superheats prevalent in the operations. In addition to developing furnace crucible designs, Hatch has also intensified its ?after sales service and support? with the construction, commissioning and start-up technical assistance and operational readiness and operational support for ramp-up to nameplate capacity and beyond. The key areas of furnace risk associated with high superheat molten material tapping has also seen the development of diagnostic systems to mitigate risks and produce early warning signals for the operators.

Published experimental coke data from a pilot plant slot-type oven were examined by statistical regression analysis. Quantitative relationships were found to exist between the coking rate, bulk density, and fine grinding of the coal, sole-oven expansion, volatile matter, moisture, ash, and carbon con-tent of the coal and coke parameters indicative of size and strength. Regression equations developed from coke data were shown to yield computed values that were in good agreement with experimental results for 11 coke properties. Prediction equations developed were evaluated with an independent set of data. Present results indicate that the variables cited undergo much interaction and the sum of these interactions determines coke size and strength.

This report is the third in a series presenting equilibrium vapor-liquid data for helium-bearing natural gases. The first two reports contained phase data for the gases processed for helium at the Bureau of Mines Amarillo and Exell, Tex., helium plants. The present report offers similar information for a lower-helium-content (0.75 mole-percent) natural gas to be processed in the Department of the Interior's long-range helium-conservation program. A windowed-cell apparatus was used to obtain 218 samples of equilibrium vapor and liquid phases at 73 experimental conditions ranging in temperature from -100° F to -275° F and in pressure from 100 to 500 psi. From the phase data, the condensation characteristics, helium solubility, and equilibrium-vaporization-coefficient data for helium, nitrogen, and methane were evaluated. The effect of using a. preliminary hydrocarbon trap upon the subsequent vapor-liquid compositions is reported. A brief comment regarding the composition effect of passing the gas through a gasoline-removal unit is also included.

Rroundtable 2009, a Knight Piésold and Co.-hosted roundtable discussion on mine closure and cover design was held at the Red Lion Inn and Casino in Elko, NV on Feb. 12, 2009. Knight Piésold?s Bryan Ulrich and Steve Boyce, as well as Knight Piésold representatives Cynthia Parnow and Corey Conrad from Denver, CO, and Rick Frechette from the Tucson, AZ office were on hand to help facilitate the discussion. The meeting played host to approximately three-dozen attendees from four states. Attendees included personnel from seven mining properties and attendees from corporate offices. The majority of attendees were people directly involved with environmental work on a day-to-day basis. Other attendees were project managers whose jobs involve some level of environmental focus. The purpose of Roundtable 2009 was to exchange ideas and information pertaining to mine closure and cover design associated with almost any aspect of a mining operation. This type of forum provides a less inhibited format for discussion, when compared with traditional conferences and symposia. In the roundtable format, lively discussions are encouraged. This discussion was the fourth in the series of Elko Roundtable events. Previous roundtables pertained to heap leach pad design, construction and operation; design, construction and operation of tailings storage facilities and site-wide water considerations.
