EXTENSIVE progress has been made in the metallurgy of alloys for die castings. Enthusiastic proponents of some alloys are inclined to make extravagant claims for their materials, which may be justified by physical tests on test bars made from the respective alloys but are seldom justified by the results obtained with commercial die castings made from those alloys. Chemical analysis of the test bars and castings fails to determine the cause of these variations, since they are due to other physical factors entering into the commercial production of die castings. In this paper, an attempt will be made to outline some of the factors in commercial die-casting practice to which these variable results may be attributed, in the hope that the manufacturer of die castings, recognizing the importance of these factors, will devote more attention to them in the design and construction of dies and equipment. In 1914,1 the author defined die castings as "metal castings made by forcing molten metal, underpressure, into metallic molds or dies." This definition was given in order to differentiate die castings from other molded metal products such as "permanent-mold" castings, "slush" castings and similar products that are sometimes erroneously termed die castings. The term "die casting" could be interpreted to include all castings made in metal molds or dies; but since this term, like most of our technical nomenclature, has been developed by commercial practice we must look to this practice for its proper definition. The Germans, with their usual devotion to descriptive names, have adopted the name of spritzguss (squirt cast) for die castings. Undoubtedly this name is more descriptive of the die-casting process, where the metal is literally squirted into the die and serves to differentiate this process from other metal mold processes, where the metal is poured into the die. In the earlier paper mentioned, the author also emphasized the fact that the definition given for die castings indicated clearly that the satisfactory operation of the process must comprise three factors, all of which must be considered of vital importance to the successful operation of the die-casting process:

ORIGINAL experimentation in specially designed arc-melting furnaces and a comprehensive review of technical literature have helped with an understanding of electric arcs as used in metallurgical applications. Results relevant to the distribution of electric potentials and currents, temperatures, pressures, the consumption of electrodes, the identities of particles participating in electrical conduction, and the modes and mechanisms of discharge are presented and discussed. Present knowledge of high-current arcs is insufficient to test pertinent theoretical suggestions. However, the chief doubts concern the identities and the liberation or formation of current-carrying particles. It seems that either (1) novel formulations of existing concepts are needed, or (2) essentially new concepts must be recognized to explain observations. An analysis of the situation has led the authors to favor the latter possibility and to suggest the existence of supplementary conducting particles. The conduction of current by the streaming of charged agglomerates is postulated. Another outgrowth of analysis is an equation for the arc potential as a function of current densities in the arc. In lieu of conclusions, the potentialities of practical applications and specific needs for fundamental clarification are summarized.

THERE have been two important accomplishments of the Truman administration; the Hoover Commission report on inefficiency and waste in government and the report of the Paley Commission on the natural resources of the United States. Both reports are in the interest of the American people and should transcend the boundaries of political parties. Both reports are starting points for the formulation of policies which must be continuously revised to meet changing conditions. Regardless of the outcome of the election the principles embodied in these two great documents must be kept alive. The Paley report is right in our own bailiwick of mineral raw materials and it behooves us to study it carefully as our responsibility to posterity. To those in the mining industry who have limited their field of observation to moving rock or to metal prices it may come as a surprise that our production of such staples as copper, lead, and zinc has fallen behind increased requirements to the point that substantial tonnages must be imported. Iron ore is next on the list and everybody knows that such metals as tin, tungsten, chromium, manganese, nickel, and cobalt are imported almost exclusively. The crisis in raw materials pointed up by the Paley report has been reported annually by Elmer Pehrson and others to small gatherings at the Mineral Economics Division sessions at the Annual Meeting for as long as we can remember. In September 1949, the United Nations Economic and Social Council held an international resource conference at Lake Success which disclosed these same grave conclusions: - Consumption of raw materials is multiplying at an alarming rate, faster than discoveries or replacements are being made. - Production has been wasteful and utilization lavishly beyond enginee¬ing and practical requirements. - Industrialized nations are depleted and many raw materials consumed by industry are not found in the industrialized countries. - Nations formerly exporters of raw materials are increasingly building their own consuming industries. - Political forces in the world are limiting access to raw materials. The Paley Commission selecting the quarter century, 1950 to 1975, to project raw material requirements for the United States, pointed out obstacles to meeting these requirements, and made recommendations for procurement. It is not important that we disagree that cobalt consumption will reach 344 pct of present, or fluorspar 187 pct when iron and ferroalloys are only expected to increase 75 pct. What is important it that the fabulous appetite of the United States for mineral raw materials has consumed more since World War I than was consumed by the entire world in all recorded history prior to 1914. And, unless the people of the United States are satisfied to remain at their present standard of living (which is unthinkable) this consumption is correctly plotted by the Paley Commission as continuing to expand. If the U. S. is to continue on a course of progress, it must procure raw materials wherever it can at the lowest possible cost. Natural resources are clearly an area in which the broadest cooperation between industry and government must exist to achieve efficient exploitation, economic consumption, and expansion of sources of supply. The message of the Paley report requires action comparable to that of the North Atlantic Pact. Its implication is as significant as military preparedness. It is a world problem. It is a mining engineering problem. Don't let it die!

The South Lake Union Pipelines contract for King County Wastewater Treatment Division and Seattle Public Utilities in Seattle, Washington included three 1.8 m (72-in)inside diameter microtunneled pipeline segments totaling about 793 m (2,600 lf).Tunnel alignments were within street right-of-way of heavily traveled urban roadways. Project challenges recognized in the design included: high groundwater levels; contaminated soil and groundwater; variable soil conditions, including fill; and timber piles and other obstructions remaining from historic land uses. The tunnels were built using a Lovat MTS Microtunneling machine, beginning in spring 2003. Conditions encountered during construction presented additional challenges beyond those anticipated in the design process, and were successfully addressed by the owners, designer, and construction management consultant all working with the contractor. Problems included highly variable soil conditions, cracking of reinforced concrete pipe joints during pipe jacking, a timber pile trestle uncovered during shaft construction, and obstructions encountered in the second and third microtunnel runs.

"At Craigmont Mines Limited, Merritt, B.C., tests were begun in March, 1965 to evaluate the use of shotcrete as a method of ground support m development headings; previously, ail drifts had. required support, which was accomplished mainly by timber and occasionally by the use of rockbolts. The tests demonstrated conclusively the effectiveness of shotcrete for supporting Craigmont's ground. Gradually, the use of timber for ground support was virtually eliminated in favour of shotcrete. This paper describes the equipment used, the operation of the equipment, pertinent cast data and opera ting details. Also discussed are other uses developed for the shot-creting equipment, the use of reinforcing bar rockbolts, and a method used at Craigmont for lining long vertical ore passes with steel plate and concrete as part of the raising cycle."

Due to a political decision, German hard coal mining will come to an end in the year 2018. By then, there will have been more than 150 years of industrial grade mining activities. Located in the western part of Germany is one of the most densely populated areas of Europe. Multiple coal seams have embossed the earth?s surface up to 20 meters (21.87 yards), as mining has subsided. The aftercare of hard coal mining will consist of three tasks: groundwater management, polder management, and groundwater treatment. The Ewigkeitslasten (cost in perpetuity) at the current groundwater level has been determined in the past. The actual cash value is calculated to be about 12.4 billion euros (approximately 16.5 billion dollars). The cost of groundwater management is directly related to the groundwater level. Rising groundwater levels will reduce the cost of pumping water. Known effects of rising groundwater are uplift of the surface, emission of methane gas at the surface, higher risk of cave-ins, and contamination of drinking water horizons. Each of those processes produces cost in order to prevent negative consequences (e.g., uncontrolled methane emissions) or to handle reparations (e.g., damages caused by surface uplifts). In the long run, it is the goal to minimize the Ewigkeitslast. As a first step, all cost-generating processes are specified, and a cost type based characterization is performed. The objective of this case study is to identify key parameters to determine the quality of a cost-generating process (proportional cost, fixed amount cost). Afterwards, it is intended to specify the quantitative impacts of each parameter and to set up an optimization model to minimize the overall cost. The quantitatively specified parameters will form the base out of which the optimization model is created.

A computer program for calculating capital and operating costs from material and energy requirements and equipment costs for use in preparing cost estimates for metallurgical process evaluations has been written by the Bureau of Mines' College Park process evaluation group. The program permits rapid recalculation of processing costs when changes of data or equipment are desired, and produces tables of capital and operating costs suitable for publication. Equipment cost summary tables for each process section end supplemental information for input-data checking is included in the computer printout. The program is written in Fortran IV except for several subroutines which are written in machine assembly language for the IBM 7094.3 With a few modifications, the program can be used on other computers.

The Summitville gold mine, located in southwestern Colorado, received tremendous publicity in the 1980's and 1990's for leaks of cyanide solutions from its heap leach facility. As is typical with cyanide spills, real time, geochemically rigorous assessments of the environmental effects were not performed. Past United States Geological Survey (USGS) research used simple mixing experiments to model the influx of alkaline cyanide heap leach solutions from Summitville into a nearby stream, whose waters were highly acidic due to severe acid-rock drainage (ARD) from the mine. These experiments indicated WAD cyanide rapidly degraded due to formation of Fe-Cu-CN solids and lesser HCN volatilization. The alkaline heap leach solutions also precipitated hydrous iron-and aluminum, oxides and hydroxysulfates (iron and aluminum 'supplied by the acid. rock drainage (ARD]), which then sorbed copper and other heavy metals from the ARD. These results indicate that mixing of cyanide heap leach solutions with ARD may be a cost-effective remedial method at mine sites where treatment of both is required. New experiments are currently in progress to further refine a potential remedial process.

The final criterion of the payability of gold production must necessarily be the cost per ounce. While the cost per ton or per cubic yard is a convenient comparative measure, and a necessary one for operating control, it is obviously insufficient as a means of judging whether or not, in a given set of circumstances, a gold production operation can be carried out economically.. An alternative method, which brings in the ton or cubic yard as a unit of measurement, is to determine what the cost per ton or per cubic yard is equivalent to, in terms of pennyweights or grains at the ruling price of gold. But this is really only another way of stating that the cost per unit of product is the ultimate measure of profit or loss, and not the cost per unit of input material.It is accordingly of interest to determine the cost per ounce of Australian gold production and to compare it with the cost of gold production in some other parts of the world which are important gold producers. The attached Appendix, which it, is believed comprises practically all Australian mines of any consequence (except Big Bell and the de Bernales group, for which. insufficient information is available), shows this information for financial years ending between 31st December, 1938, and 31st December, 1939, the production of gold dealt with being some 1,084,000 oz., or 66% of the total Australian production for 1939. For comparative purposes the cost of producing gold at representative mines in New Guinea, New Zealand, Fiji, Canada, India, West Africa and Rhodesia, and the average cost of production at the Rand mines, has also been included.It is obviously necessary in a study of this sort that the basis of the cost should be clearly set out and should be as nearly as possible uniform. SOME years ago, the writer described heat checks or thermal cracks that occur in die-casting dies.1 The life of dies was considered in relation to the casting temperature, the material used for the die, and the heat to be absorbed by the die per unit volume of casting made. The mech-anism of the action that results in thermal failure of dies was described. In the present paper the writer proposes to describe some additional observations in regard to heat checking, make one or two suggestions as to the method or methods for further attack of the problem, and give the results obtained on some work carried out along these lines.

IN the zeal for opening up new ore-bodies, or for. extracting the ore from attractive bodies gal ready opened up, we very often lose sight of the fact, that, after all, the operation of a mine is a business proposition, pure and simple; and for the best working-results should be treated upon a strict business basis. Of course, in every mine of consequence a record is kept of expenditures and receipts, and such glittering generalities as "gross receipts," " net receipts," " mining expenses," .and " per cent. profit," can be told to the cent; but does this . record show economy of management, either as compared with the same record of other months, or as compared to the record of other mines of the' same class ? Moreover, if such a record shows that the cost of mining is high, does it in any way en¬able the manager to put his finger on the leakage? Does it necessarily follow that a mine which makes a profit of, say, 40 per cent on 25-dollar ore, is doing less economical mining than one which saves 60 per cent on 80-dollar ore ? Of course the figures in the latter case look the more attractive, but when it comes to a point of saving everything which can be saved, and of cutting down expenses to the lowest possible cost of operation, the former mine is doubtless on the most firm and economical financial basis. But as the relative merits of the system of mining in the two cases, nothing could be decided without a basis of detailed comparison ; if one system is more economical than the other, why is it so, and wherein does the advantage lie ? This can be shown only by keeping accurately the cost of each mining operation. And no matter how dissimilar two mines may be in character and operation, yet there are a few general heads common to all mining operations. As a result of the increased depth of mining in the South African gold mining industry mining induced seismicity is a severe problem. One of the strategies within the industry to contain the problem is to incorporate a system of regularly spaced stabilising pillars into mine layouts. At the Driefontein Gold Mine a system of closely spaced dip pillars is used to contain seismic energy emissions. Comparisons of seismic data for several mining clusters initially indicated a possible measure of success in the containment and occurrence of larger events. A detailed analysis of data over a 5-year period since the start of mining however, has revealed a delayed seismic response to the increasing strike spans. Significant changes marked by an increase in certain seismic variables have been observed at mining spans of between 100 to 120 meters and could be of significance to pillar spacing in the design of deep level mining layouts. La sismicité occasionnée par l’exploitation minière est un problème grave dans les mines profondes de l’industrie minière aurifère en Afrique du Sud. Une des stratégies utilisées dans l’industrie a été de maîtriser le problème en incorporant un système de piliers de stabilisation régulièrement espacés dans la disposition des mines. A la Driefontein Gold Mine, un système de piliers de pendage proches les uns des autres est utilisé pour contenir les émissions d’énergie sismique. Au début, des comparaisons de donnés sismiques pour plusieurs groupes d’extraction ont indiqué un succès possible dans la limitation et l’occurrence d’évènements sismiques. Cependant, une analyse détaillée des données sur une période de 5 années a révélé un délai entre la progression de l’extraction et une réponse sismique accrue. Des changements considérables dans les variables sismiques ont été observés dans des intervalles d’extraction entre 100 et 120 mètres, ce qui pourrait être significatif pour l’espacement des piliers dans la conception de la disposition des mines de fond. Resultierend aus den zunehmenden Tiefen des Bergbaus in der südafrikanischer Goldbergbauindustrie stellt sich die vom Bergbau hervorgerufene Seismizität als bedrohliches Problem dar. Es war eine der Strategien innerhalb der Industrie, das Problem dadurch einzudämmen, daß regelmäßig plazierte Stabilisierungspfeiler in den Bergbaulayouts inkorporiert wurden. In der Driefontein Gold Mine wird ein System von knapp aneinandergesetzten im Abfallbereich befindliche Pfeiler benutzt, um seismische Energieemissionen einzudämmen. Vergleiche der seismischen Daten für mehrere Bergbaugruppen zeigten anfangs ein mögliches Maß von Erfolg in der Eindämmung und im Auftreten von größeren Fällen an. Eine ausführliche Analyse von Daten über einen 5jährigen Zeitraum hat jedoch ergeben, daß eine Verzögerung zwischen der Progression des Bergbaus und einer erhöhten seismischen Reaktion besteht. Bedeutende Änderungen in den seismischen Variablen wurden an Bergbauspannen von 100 bis 120 Metern beobachtet und könnten für Abstandsbemessung von Pfeilern im Design des Tiefbergbaulayouts von Bedeutung sein.

A201 aluminium alloy is a high strength casting alloy with a nominal composition of Al-4.6Cu-0.3Mg-0.6Ag. It is strengthened by the O(Al2Cu) phase and the ??(Al2Cu) phase during heat treatment. Further strengthening of this alloy system can be obtained through the addition of transition elements, but care must be taken as other elements might have adverse effects on the mechanical properties. The objective of this study is to determine the influence of Mn on the tensile properties of rheo-processed Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloy A201. ThermoCalc software was used to predict the different phases that can be expected in the alloys, and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was used to investigate the actual phases that formed. The influence of these phases on tensile properties is quantified. SEM and ThermoCalc revealed that there is an increased amount of the Al20Cu2Mn3 with increasing Mn. The tensile properties showed that high amounts of Mn do have adverse effects on the tensile properties of alloy A201, especially the ductility. The compressive strength of rock (sc) has an important effect on design of structures in rock engineering. Compressive strength can be determined in the laboratory using the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) test. Some other index tests, such as the point load test, are also used, particularly when suitable samples for UCS are not available. The quantification of rock texture has introduced a new method in rock engineering for estimating the mechanical and physical properties of rock materials from microscopic investigations. The aim of this study is to quantify rock texture to estimate rock strength from the texture coefficient (TC), which is determined from a statistical assessment of thin section images. Rock texture is quantified by twelve different images from a single thin section to increase the reliability of texture analysis. A data-set is prepared to investigate correlations between TC and sc. The statistical correlations are computed after classifying of the rock samples based on their lithology as well as grain features. Equations derived based on the results of this study are used to predict the approximate value of compressive strength from the texture coefficient. This method is particularly useful for preliminary studies in rock engineering projects prior to detailed site investigation.

Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook, published a book titled 'Lean In', where she invites women to sit at the table. In summary, to 'sit at the table' entails not only embracing opportunity, but to actively seek out opportunities in leadership positions. Sandberg points out that, unfortunately, apart from institutional obstacles, a woman's own perceived limitations have a negative impact on her leadership ambitions. To create an environment where diversity will flourish, where everyone has a seat at the table and everyone has a voice, safety must be established first. To establish safety within a diverse team, there is power in relationships and connections. This study will first and foremost review theories in literature as to why diversity and inclusion are so important and the value that diversity brings to our industry. The study also recommends a few focus areas for improving diversity and inclusion in the industry.

As opposed to fine dry sizing, where the length of the screening machine is critical for high separation efficiency, introducing slurry feed to screens in a thin and even layer at minimal velocities across wider screen surfaces allows for high capacities and efficiencies, with maximum screen cloth life. This is due primarily to the combination of free liquid and high frequency vibration of the Derrick motors, which allow fine undersize material to pass through the screen apertures. Lacking either of these factors would be extremely detrimental to the screening process. Without the high frequency vibration of the motor, the screen is essentially a low efficiency sieve bend. Without the free liquid to carry fines through the screen openings, the screen is for all intents and purposes a glorified conveyor or dewatering unit, as little or no sizing takes place once the screen is devoid of free liquid. For optimal screening results, Derrick recommends feeding slurry to a screen at approximately 20% solids by volume. Figure 1 shows the Stack Sizer design concept. Note that a single feed point is used to evenly distribute the flow to the five separate feed points."

Demolition blasting next to an active railroad can be very challenging because of track safety, blasting vibrations, potential track fouling by blast debris, and short work windows on a live track. Recently, in eastern Washington, one of the major railroad companies has been aggressively constructing a second main track to accommodate the expected increase in rail traffic of natural resource products. To accommodate construction of the second line, the railroad company used blasting demolition techniques to remove an old railroad trestle pier on the Milwaukee Road that was in the footprint of the new track bed. The trestle bridged the present rail line and flanked the track with two massive 550-ton (499 tonne) twin-columned steel reinforced concrete piers. The railroad contracted with a specialized contractor to remove the south pier using blasting demolition techniques. The blasting design presented the following challenges: blasting during live track conditions and short work windows; designing a V-notch blast pattern to ensure the pier fell away from the live track; drilling, loading, and timing of the shot; maintaining blasting vibrations at the track below 4 in./sec (102 mm/sec); maintaining ambient overpressure noise below 133 dB; control of fly rock and debris; and track protection and emergency debris removal plan.
