The program was carried out to develop deep kerfing and core breaking techniques to be incorporated into the design of a field prototype hard rock mining machine. The field machine is designed to mine non-abrasive bedded deposits up to 20,000 psi in uniaxial compressive strength. The mining technique involves cutting approximately 2 ft deep parallel kerfs spaced 2 ft apart in either a horizontal or vertical direction and subsequently breaking out the cores so defined. The prototype machine is intended for demonstration of the technique in a quarry or equivalent field environment. The program was aimed at minimizing the required kerf width, obtaining reliable breaking within that kerf width and determining cutter blade requirements necessary to achieve a mining rate of 20 ft3/min. Full scale breaking experiments and 1/2 scale kerfing experiments were employed to evaluate the system. High strength concrete test specimens were used to simulate the rock being cut and broken. The test results indicate the kerf/break technique can achieve the desired mining rate by utilizing two 7 ft diam blades to cut 2 in. wide by 24 in. deep kerfs. A lateral load applied at the base of the kerf (base shear) was selected at the core breaking technique to be employed by the full-scale prototype machine.

This paper is a case history of an exploration venture for base metals, begun by the Rocky Mountain District of Bear Creek Mining Company in 1952 and completed in 1954. The project was based on the idea of W. S. Burbank, U. S. Geological Survey, that commercial deposits of base metals might occur in Paleozoic sediments beneath hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks in the Southern Bonanza mining district, Colorado. Here, an area of andesitic rocks, four square miles in extent, has been argillized, pyritized, chloritized and silicified. Geological, geophysical and geochemical studies were followed by the diamond drilling of three holes totalling 6,220 feet. Further alteration ang geochemical studies were made on the cores from these holes. A brief review of the alteration and geologic mapping, colored aerial photograph interpretation, geochemical soil and rock sampling, magnetic, gravity and radio-metric surveys are presented together with some conclusions regarding this work. This paper is a case history of an exploration venture for base metals, begun by the Rocky Mountain District of Bear Creek Mining Company in 1952 and completed in 1954. BASIS FOR THE PROJECT The project was based on the idea of W. S. Burbank (1947, p. 444) that commercial deposits of base metals might occur in Paleozoic sediments beneath hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks in the Southern Bonanza mining district, Colorado. Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, including the favorable Leadville limestone, are exposed three miles south of the altered area, and reason exists to believe that they might underlie it within a reasonable depth. Alteration of pre-mineral volcanic rocks has been used successfully as a guide to concealed orebodies in the Main Tintic and East Tin tic mining districts, Utah (Bill-ingsley, 1933, p. 120-122; Lovering et al, 1949; Howd, 1957, p. 124-134; Cook, 1957, p. 73) and could be a useful guide here. GENERAL GEOLOGY AND STRUCTURE The Northern and Southern Bonanza mining districts are northwest of the San Luis Valley in southern Colorado, just within the northeastern edge of the San Juan volcanic province. The districts are1ocated on the southern extension of the Sawatch uplift, a prorninent northwest-trending structural high. The Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral investigation of the 177,000-acre Secesh study area; most of the area had been proposed as wilderness. Bureau personnel mapped and sampled several hundred mine and prospect workings; 1,715 rock, soil, and placer samples were taken during the investigation. The study area is centered about 25 mi east-northeast of McCall, Idaho, in the Payette National Forest. Five mining districts extend into or are adjacent to the study area. There have been more than 3,000 mining claims located inside the study area, 884 are current. In excess of $17 million (historical value) in placer and lode gold has reportedly been produced from the Warren district alone. The study area contains gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, tungsten, and antimony. At least six properties that would be in the proposed wilderness contain gold resources; more than 18 million tons averaging 0.038 oz/ton gold have been identified. Additional resources may be located at 4 other localities. The 4th of July mine is currently producing gold/silver/lead ore. Similar resources may be located on at least 3 other properties. Placer samples from the study area contained up to 0.34 oz gold/yd3 ($120/yd3). The samples are representative of relatively small occurrences and do not constitute resources; small quantities of gold may be recovered by recreational placer miners.

Paper presented at the conference Economic geology in Europe and beyond II, models for mineral deposits in sedimentary basins, held in Keyworth, UK, 13-14 April 1994. The SW part of the Southern Uplands is a back-arc section of an accretionary thrust system, divided into structural blocks by major NE-SW shear zones and NW-SE faults forming the margins of Permian half-grabens. The highest arsenic levels in stream sediments (over 65 ppm) are associated with those blocks carrying brittle-ductile transition fabrics. Three factors combine to recomend the area as having potential for gold mineralisation: As-rich greywackes as country rock, felsic intrusions and a major shear zone. Selected stream sediments were analysed for gold using lead fire assay with ultra-pure flux and ICP-MS finish. Several localities showed over 15 ppb Au, the three most significant being within the hanging wall of the Orlock Bridge Fault and each having distinct characteristics

"Engineers remain in demand. Job opportunities in the United States still exceed the number of students graduating from college with degrees in Mining Engineering. Although enrollment is up for freshman studying Mining Engineering, many of those students will either change majors or not complete their degree, maintaining that deficit of available Mining Engineers. What can be done to ensure that enough Mining Engineers will graduate to fill the needs of the mining industry over the next ten to 20 years? The authors believe that this need can be met by recruiting students to Mining Engineering programs who are genuinely interested in working in the mining industry. With this in mind, Montana Tech conducted its first Mining Engineering camp in July 2014 to get junior and senior high school students interested in careers in the mining industry by showing them that Mining Engineering is both an exciting and rewarding career. This paper discusses What a Blast! The 2014 Montana Tech Mining Camp. INTRODUCTION The concept of summer camps for high school students is not new. For example, Missouri University of Science and Technology has offered their “Explosives Camp” for several years. A large percentage of attendees to these camps discover or confirm an interest in Mining Engineering and enroll in the school’s program. The Dean of the Montana Tech School of Mines and Engineering challenged department heads to develop and offer summer camps for prospective high school students to get a taste of engineering with the goal being to improve recruitment for each discipline. Mining Engineering embarked on the concept of a summer camp in 2013 with a concept to provide a week’s experience in Mining Engineering during the summer of 2014. What it takes to progress from concept to reality, with some of the learnings to be shared, follows."

Proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells generate electricity by reacting hydrogen and oxygen. A thin, bipolar electrode material provides a medium for electron exchange with the electrolyte, alternately serving as anode at the hydrogen-rich side and cathode at the oxygen-rich side. Stainless steels have sufficient corrosion resistance to qualify as bipolar plate materials. However, the protective chromite layer increases the contact resistance, the battery’s internal resistance; and thus, decreases the electrical efficiency of the fuel cell. A heat-treatment is proposed and investigated via simulation by ThermoCalc / Dictra and experimentally, to generate a sufficient quantity of conducting surface carbides that breach the protective layer. Once carbide growth is arrested, a subsequent heat-treatment is also needed at a higher temperature to restore the corrosion resistance by filling-in the Cr-depleted layer (sensitization) around the carbide particles.

THE manufacture of nickel-clad steel plate and the fabrication of articles from it has progressed far enough to permit a general description of the working methods used. The manufacture of sheets made up of layers of nickel and steel is not new as a sheet of this character was patented in Germany in 1893. Present development differs mainly in the size and finish of the product. The earlier light-gage highly finished products have been limited in their application due to their similarity, in certain respects, to electro-plated and highly finished alloy sheets. The new product is a relatively heavy plate 1/4 or 3/s in. thick and heavier, with one side coated with nickel, the weight of nickel being of the order of 10 per cent of the whole. The finish is that of hot-rolled steel plate.

"In a COREM-McGill collaborative research and development project, gas dispersion parameters and froth properties were manipulated in a copper flotation plant to study interactions between the collection and the cleaning zones. In this paper, specific work on developing some relationships between operating conditions and froth stability in a rougher column flotation cell of 125 m3 is reported. Froth stability, measured by image analysis, was related to the following process conditions for specific flotation machines in an industrial case study: Gas flow rate, collector dosage, pH, frother type and dosage. Across the range examined, froth stability was improved through a decrease in gas flow rate and/or increasing frother dosage. Metallurgical results (grade and recovery) showed that both gold and copper were dependent on froth stability.INTRODUCTIONMcGill and COREM have over the past two years collaborated in a research and development project to merge gas dispersion parameters, frother analysis (McGill technology), and froth properties (COREM’s imaging system) to study the interactions between the collection zone (pulp) and the cleaning zone (froth). The main goal is to increase knowledge of flotation cell hydrodynamics since it is known to govern the metallurgical performance of the flotation process (Power et al., 2000). In this paper, specific work on developing some relationships between operating conditions and froth stability in a copper flotation circuit is reported.The objective of this work is to study gas dispersion in a large volume flotation column (hydrodynamics) and to measure its impact on the froth. By froth imaging, it is possible to diagnose operational problems on the basis of froth characteristics (Bartolacci et al., 2005a) and consequently, to propose ways of improving process performance by froth analysis (Bartolacci et al., 2005b).Another approach to froth characterization is investigated in this paper. In the same flotation column, a froth stability apparatus (column) was included (Triffet and Cillers, 2004). The mechanical froth stability apparatus is used to link “hard” froth characteristic measurements to “soft” froth characteristic measurements (those obtained by imaging)."

WTHIN the next month all members of the Institute will be given an opportunity to vote for a new President, two Vice-Presidents, and five Directors. All of the candidates nominated by the official committee are well known to certain groups of the Institute membership but a brief record of their professional lives will be given here for the information of those that will vote. Not since 1927, when Everette DeGolyer guided the destinies of the Institute, has a member of the Petroleum Division been a candidate for President. John Meston Lovejoy has been a Director since 1930, and a Vice-President as well for the last year: In the three years 1932-4 lie was also chairman of the Admissions Committee. Dir. Lovejoy graduated from the Columbia School of Mines in 1911, just before lie was 22 years old, and began his professional career as a copper miner at Chuquicamata. Chile. Silver and gold mining later claimed his % attention, and it was not until 1914 that lie gut into the oil business, as geologist for the Standard Oil Co. of N. Y. This took hint to China and he later worked for the company in Wyoming. In 1917 lie joined the Army where lie rose to be captain of Field Artillery. Upon his return to the United States he went to work for the Amerada Petroleum Co., of which he later became vice-president and general manager, with headquarters in Tulsa. Since coining to New York he has been president of the Petroleum Bond & Share Cu.. and is currently president of the Seaboard Oil Co.

"INTRODUCTION This is the fourth report of investigations dealing with the cooperative tests between the Bureau of Mines and industry on the use of electrolytic manganese in steelmaking. The first report dealt with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of stainless steel 3/ the second with its use in acid electric steel practice, 4/ and the third with its use in low-carbon basic open-hearth steelmaking. 2/ A résumé of those investigations E7 appeared in the magazine STEEL. 5/ The present report deals with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of four types of stainless steel and the new Timken 16-25-6 alloy. The Bureau of Mines supplied The Timken Roller Bearing Co. with 62,000 pounds of electrolytic manganese for use in the tests.The electrolytic manganese was produced at the Bureau of Mines pilot plant, Boulder City, Nev., by the process developed by the Bureau and described in Bulletin 463, Operation of Electrolytic Manganese Pilot Plant, Boulder City, Nev., by J. The treatment plant at The Great Boulder Proprietary Gold Mines Limited was designed and erected by Chas. Ruwolt Proprietary Limited in 1934 to mill 12,000 short tons per month. The flow sheet called for fine grinding, straking, flotation, roasting of the flotation concentrates and cyanidation of the resulting calcine.In 1937 considerable alterations and additions were made to the plant. The grindin,g section was duplicated with addition of two 8 ft. x 6 ft. Abco Ball Mills to increase the throughput to 28,000 tons per month, and the flow sheet was changed from "straight flotation" to "precyanidation and flotation" neeessitating the addition of thickeners, agitators, Oliver filters and Edwards roasters.A further change to the flow sheet was made in 1942 with the introduction of sulphur dioxide conditioning ahead of the flotation section, to permit the treatment of 500,000 tons of oxidised ore. Since that date no major alterations were made to the flow sheet or equipment until 1950, when the modifications set out in this paper were commenced with the object of reducing costs and increasing plant efficiency.These modifications are dealt with under the section headings and are therefore not necessarily in chronological order.CRUSHING SECTIONThere has been no material alteration in this section although at the time of writing a 650 ton capacity ore bin is being erected ahead of the primary Jaques crusher. The unique aspect of the SMART project is that the highway decks are used periodically for the conveyance of water. This aspect of the project has posed its own technical challenges that have been overcome in the design stage of the work allowing the project to be taken forward to construction with confidence in the systems to be Installed in the tunnel.

Today, underground exploration is spotlighted as an infinitely developable area. For this purpose, many tunneling technologies were created. And until this very day, many techniques are being developed for more efficient underground movement. Although previous technologies have been developed and now being used in various forms like TMB, struck propulsion method and hydraulic propulsion method, it is hard to find a robot type exploring in small scale. But development of small scale underground exploration robot is a promising research subject for its usage in examination of soil, mineral, and subterranean resources, investigation of hazardous regions, and the military. So we developed a robot that can dig and move underground, inspired from the motion of earthworm and mole cricket. Earthworm and mole cricket dig the soil in the front and draw it off backward, so that they can move forward. We developed a mechanism that uses 2 rotating solid of revolution (bits) for pulverizing the firmly united soil in the front and put it inside the body. The bits rotate in the opposite direction of each other. While moving forward, the soil in the front moves along the spiral on the bit and is saved inside the body. The soil saved inside is taken out through an outlet in the back by a ventilation system. The ventilation system on the ground blows through a hosepipe connected to inner part of the robot and the air blows off the soil. The moving mechanism of exploring underground can be classified into 2 parts. One is to fix the blade link on the soil in a form of 4-bar link. The other one is to move forward rotating the whole link. When the blade link system for movement rotates a certain degree, one blade link is fixed, while the other one is folded in. When 2 blade links of different length rotate as it is, different torque is applied on each link. By the law of action and reaction, the link that has larger torque leads the rotation and movement.

The ore, as sent to the sulphide mill, is a mixture, in varying proportions, of oxidized ore from above the 450-ft. level and sulphide ore from above and below (to date mainly from above) that level. The oxidized ore consists essentially of quartz, with varying amounts of kaolin and clayey material which passes into the slime and, in excess, creates a serious problem in settling. Pyrite may be present in small amounts. The gold is free and extremely fine.The ore, classed as sulphide, consists of pyritic material in a quartz gangue. The sulphides have been exposed to weathering, leaching by descending solutions and attack by ascending gases and actual burning. The alteration products occur in widely varying proportions and this variation adds to the difficulties in settling and control of grinding and flotation.Copper Minerals.-Chalcopyrite is the principal copperbearing mineral with smaller and varying amounts of covellite, which is sometimes associated with chalcocite, both these minerals being apparently of secondary origin.Examination of tailing by Dr. Stillwell has revealed all stages between clean chalcopyrite, chalcopyrite tinged with covellite, covellite with residual cores of chalcopyrite and clean covellite.The chalcopyrite is free floating, very few particles of clean chalcopyrite being observed in the tailing from granular flotation. The 1969 Lignite Symposium was held at Grand Forks, N. Dak., on May 1-2, 1969. Cosponsored by the University of North Dakota and the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, the meeting was the fifth in this series. Registrants from many States and Canadian Provinces attended the meeting representing many segments of energy-oriented companies, State and Federal Government, and universities. At 2-year intervals, these symposia provide a common meeting place where recent research and developments in technology and utilization of energy resources with emphasis on solid fuels (lignite) are presented. Proceedings3 of the previous symposia including a Forum held in 1958 have been published.4

Abstract: From the viewpoint of interaction mechanics of solid and gas, a coupled mathematical model is presented for coal/rock mass deformation and gas leak flow in parallel deformable coal seams. Numerical simulations for the prediction of the safety range of mining of protection layer are performed with experimental data from a mine with potential danger of coal/gas outbursts. Analyses show that the numerical simulation results are consistent with the measured data on the spot. Therefore, the coupled model shows a positive future for applications in a wide range. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG:Von der Veranschaulichung der Abhängigkeit Mechaniker für Körper und Gas, wird ein verbundenes mathematisches Modell für festen coal/rock Deformation und Gasleckstelle Fluß in parallele deformable Kohlenähte dargestellt. Numerische Simulationen für die Vorhersage der Sicherheit Strecke, die Schutzschichtbergbau verwendet, werden mit experimentellen Daten von einer Grube mit möglicher Gefahr der coal/gas Ausbrüche durchgeführt. Analysen zeigen, daß die numerischen Simulation Resultate mit den gemessenen Daten bezüglich des Punktes gleichbleibend sind. Folglich zeigt das verbundene Modell eine positive Zukunft für Anwendungen in einer breiten Strecke. RÉSUMÉ: Du point de vue de la mécanique d'interaction pour le solide et le gaz, un modèle mathématique couplé est présenté pour l'écoulement plein de déformation de coal/rock et de fuite de gaz dans les filons houillers deformable parallèles. Des simulations numériques pour la prévision de la gamme de sûreté employant l'exploitation de couche de protection sont effectuées avec des données expérimentales d'une mine avec le danger potentiel des accès de coal/gas. Les analyses prouvent que les résultats numériques de simulation sont conformés aux données mesurées sur place. Par conséquent, le modèle couplé montre un futur positif pour des applications dans un éventail.

This paper presents the results of the geotechnical investigation for the repair of the Fashion Island Boulevard Bridge, Bridge No. 350160, in San Mateo, California. The concrete, precast girder bridge suffered considerable damage during the Loma Prieta earthquake. The existing 36-inch, precast, prestressed concrete piles cracked and spalled at their tops. Based on analyses performed by Biggs Cardosa Associates, structural engineers, the piles did not have sufficient strength and ductility to resist the dead plus seismic loads specified in the Caltrans "Bridge Design Specifications". Additional support for the bridge was needed and the repair strategy consisted of installing large diameter pipe piles at the existing bent and abutment locations. This paper describes the geotechnical engineering analysis and design decisions for the large diameter pile design.

Delhi Australian Petroleum Ltd., acting as operator for the joint interests of Delhi and Santos Ltd., has been engaged in petroleum exploration in the western Great Artesian Basin since 1958.Extensive airborne magnetometer, gravity meter, reflection and refraction seisomograph, and surface geological surveys have been carried out. Results of the surveys have considerably altered the concepts of the geology of the area.Seven exploratory wells have been drilled in the area. Results of the drilling have established the presence in the subsurface of previously unknown Paleozoic sediments which are capable of generating hydrocarbons.Production of oil or gas has not been achieved, but each phase of the exploration programme has resulted in progressively establishing the basic conditions necessary for the discovery of commercially profitable accumulations.INTRODUCTIONDelhi Australian Petroleum Ltd. commenced operations in Australia in 1958. They have subsequently been engaged in systematic exploration for oil and gas, acting as operator for their partner, Santos Limited. The methods and techniques employed are those used throughout the petroleum industry.
