As part of the Lake Fort Smith Water Supply Dam Enlargement project, located in northwest Arkansas, microtunneling methods were used to install two side-by-side,1.53m (60-in) inside-diameter steel pipes between the intake structure shaft and the lake. The 46.6 m- (153 ft-) and 41.7 m- (137 ft-) long tunnels were excavated in Pennsylvanian sedimentary bedrock ranging from coarse sandstone to siltstone and shale-like claystone. The intake tunnels were constructed 18.3 m (60 ft) below lake level from the dry shaft. Special installation methods and procedures described herein were used to complete the lake taps. Installation difficulties that caused minor delays are also reviewed. After the excavation of the Intake shaft was completed, the two lake taps were installed in approximately ten weeks with the same microtunneling machine.

Svedala started a development program in 1997 to develop a process to convert waste tires into valuable commodities. A review of numerous approaches revealed short-comings in the various approaches either process, mechanical, combination of factors, or trying to emphasis the production of low value products. A market study revealed that a process that could produce a good grade of carbon black would be economically feasible. This paper discusses the laboratory and pilot plant development and commercial plant design.

Interest in mining narrow, vein-type ones has increased world-wide during the last few years despite the fact that prices of metals have not risen in proportion as production costs of mining, such as labour and energy. In many mines, where narrow ones are mined, the mining technique and equipment used have been poorly mechanised. The mining methods have been cut-and-fill or shrinkage stoping. Pneumatic jack-legs have been used for drilling and slushers have been used for loading. The methods that have been used can be called the 'first-generation' methods. Work has been very hard for miners. It has been dangerous and exhausting. Production volumes of mines, and a s a result of that, also profits have been low.

"While conducting investigations in connection with the helium program of the Bureau of Mines, the Cryogenic Laboratory has improved an apparatus for the rapid and accurate determination of the helium content of natural gas and gaseous mixtures derived from that source. The separation of helium is effected by the use of activated coconut charcoal which, when cooled to liquid-air temperatures, absorbs the nitrogen and other constituents of the gas, leaving the helium in a. spectroscopically pure state. This absorptive property of activated charcoal was discovered- by Dewar3/ in 1875. Several years later, while conducting their original researches on helium in natural gas, Cady and McFarland employed the charcoal method for the absorption and removal of the common constituents of natural gas and constructed an efficient apparatus in which this operation could be effected.4/ Shortly after initiating the government's helium activities during the World War period, the Bureau of Mines adopted, with Minor modifications, the Cady and McFarland apparatus and method of analysis. Seibel.5./ described this modified apparatus and method of procedure as part of a publication on helium-bearing natural gas. Subsequently, the Bureau's apparatus for helium analysis has been simplified and improved to facilitate more rapid and positive operation. The apparatus and method of procedure now being used by the Bureau of Mines Cryogenic Laboratory arc described in this paper.The personnel of the Bureau of Mines Cryogenic Laboratory has improved and brought the helium apparatus described herein to its present state of perfection. The writer's contributions have been-of minor importance, and he wishes to give the various members and former members of the laboratory staff full credit for the improvements they have made. He also desires to express his appreciation for suggestions and criticisms offered during the preparation of this paper to the following members of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Division, Bureau of Mines, which now includes the Amarillo Helium Plant and Cryogenic Laboratory: H. Kennedy.The quantitative determination of helium in a gaseous mixture is accomplished by the removal of the other constituents from the sample, either by chemical or physical Means, leaving only the helium which can be measured directly. Chemical methods, when applied to natural gas, require the burning of the hydrocarbons in oxygen, the, absorption of the resulting carbon dioxide in a caustic solution, the removal of the excess oxygen in a suitable solution such as an alkaline pyrogallate, and the elimination of nitrogen by sparking or by combination with hot calcium or magnesium.. Such procedures are very slow and tedious compared with the physical method which employs the absorptive property of activated charcoal to effect the separation of the other constituents from the helium."

Improving the accuracy of the performance prediction models for hard rock Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) is important in estimation of the schedule and cost of tunnelling in related projects. The effects of rock mass on performance of TBMs has been studied extensively, yet due to the complex nature of the process, impact of many parameters influencing machine advance rate are not very clear and there is still room for improvements. More accurate estimates can be obtained by better understanding of operating parameters in various geological conditions and can lead to matching machine specifications with job conditions, optimizing machine performance, and avoiding long delays and downtime for increased productivity. This paper will offer review of two case histories including Queens Water tunnel in New York and KCRC project in Hong Kong. The analysis of the available field data, including the geological back mapping and results of laboratory testing of rock mechanical properties, machine operational parameters and achieved rate of penetration will be presented. This includes statistical analysis of available field data to provide a better understanding of the influence of rock mass properties on performance of hard rock TBMs as well as related formulas to improve performance estimates.

Remediation of contaminated soil represents a significant market for application of Deep Soil Mixing (DSM). Eighty-one percent of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Superfund Program’s site remedies have involved contaminated soil. Contaminated soil is frequently treated by In-situ Solidification/Stabilization (ISS). ISS treatment of contaminated soil involves mixing binding agents into soil using DSM techniques. DSM is a core business for many DFI members. Members may improve and broaden their services to clients by learning about the recent ISS treatment of contaminated soil at a Superfund site. ISS treatment is part of the EPA-selected remedy for a Superfund Site in the metro New York City area. The property has seen heavy industrial use for more than a century. Soil at the site is contaminated with a variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) including coal tars and heavy metals, principally arsenic and lead. Beginning in 2017 and continuing through 2018, approximately 150,000 cubic yards (115,000 cubic meters) of soil will be treated by ISS at the case study site. Portland cement and slag cement are mixed into the soil by DSM techniques using GPS guided excavators to immobilize the hazardous constituents within the treated soil. ISS treatment by DSM will contribute to redevelopment of this valuable property. This paper will describe ISS constructability and performance, case study grout mix design with geotechnical results for strength and permeability, and deep soil mixing techniques. INTRODUCTION In-situ solidification and stabilization (ISS) is a deep soil mixing (DSM) technique applied in the environmental remediation field to physically encapsulate, or chemically bind, contaminates of concern such that the impacts to human health and the environment are mitigated. Common remediation applications of ISS include mixing cementitious reagents into contaminated soils to form a monolithic mass with desired performance characteristics, and the installation of vertical subsurface walls designed to control groundwater movement. A key characteristic of ISS is that the contaminated soils are treated in their existing location at the project site and then are left in place after treatment. Typical performance characteristics of the ISS treated soils include improved unconfined compressive strength (UCS), reduced hydraulic conductivity (HC), and reduced leaching potential of soil contaminants. Increased shear resistance of the treated soil may also be a performance requirement where seismic loading is a concern.

Geological hazards such as faulting, basement ridges, and zones of "thin" (< 6 m) coal have a major impact on mining economics of underground operations in Huntly Coalfield. Experience has shown that drillhole-based investigations do not yield sufficiently detailed models of the coal seam to allow management of the planning risks associated with these hazards. Consequently, operational performance is affected by unplanned costs associated with lower productivity, loss of coal reserves, and expensive strata control remedies in problem ground conditions. Huntly Coalfield is a challenging environment for acquisition of good quality seismic reflection data due to the very thick (10-85m) weathering layer. Since 1994, successful acquisition of 2D and 3D data has been achieved through a combination of careful testing of technical parameters and experimental trials prior to committing to production recording. High resolution seismic reflection (HRSR) is proving to be an investigations technique which generates accurate and reliable models of the coal seam and associated structures, such as normal faults and topography of the surface on which the coal seam rests. The HRSR technique has been applied and developed in the Okowhao Sector where Huntly East Mine is developing and extracting coal reserves. Results of a recent 3D survey demonstrate that this technique is capable of revolutionising risk management in mine planning for underground mines in structurally complicated coal deposits.

Oil shale, a long-considered potential source of motor fuel in the United States, is found over an extensive area in the Green River formation in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming.4/ Oil has been retorted commercially from shale in Scotland for many years,5/ and work done by the Bureau of Mines and other investigators has shown that it is technically feasible to extract oil from American shales.6/ By refining, the shale oil may be converted into marketable products similar to those manufactured from crude petroleum. Froth flotation is applied to mineral sand concentrates in order to produce commercially viable xenotime concentrates. Experiments indicate that a xenotime product containing 38% Y2O3 at 47% recovery or 34% Y2O3 at 83% recovery can be obtained from a 27% Y2O3 feed. The process involves a primary stage of reverse flotation at which oxide and silicate gangue is floated, and secondary stage of direct flotation at which xenotime is floated. Of the various collectors screened an amphoteric compound was found to be effective at both stages. This was made possible by the addition of sodium silicate at the second stage, which acted as depressant for the remainder of the gangue. Similar studies on a low grade feed material were somewhat unsatisfactory as the grade achieved fell short of what was targeted.

Most U.S. coal production is bituminous coal. Some 90% of current production comes from a geographical area enclosed in a circle with a 300 mile radius and its center at about Huntington, West Virginia. There are important underground coal production areas in the western parts of the United States as well. Most U.S. coal production comes from fairly level seams, many of which pitch rather uniformly only a few feet per mile. Usually there will be several overlying seams of varying thicknesses, separated by several tens of feet. Fig. 1. 1. The computer program introduced in this paper is based on design guidelines developed for selection of support systems used in mine roadways. The support types considered include rock bolts as well as rigid and yieldable steel arches. Using the computer program, the design engineer can select the type, pattern and specifications of the support systems suitable for various roof conditions. The concepts utilized, assumptions made, support selection criteria and description of the computer program, developed for the PC, are included.

Introduction This paper attempts to summarize some of the major criticisms of drug testing. Eight problems with drug testing are discussed. These are: • It does not measure something employers have a reasonable need to know, • It is a distortion of priorities, • Drug use is not known to be associated with increased risk of occupational injuries, • Drug testing is proposed as a dangerously simplistic solution to poorly conceived problems, • In the absence of safeguards, it is unacceptably inaccurate, • In the absence of treatment commitments and confidentiality protection for persons dependent on drugs, it is an unethical practice of medicine, • Drug testing is an invasion of privacy, and • It will have a negative effect on treatment of persons with drug or alcohol dependencies. Employers' need to know It does not measure something employers have a reasonable need to know. It is reasonable for employers and fellow workers to want to know if workers are functionally impaired (intoxicated) while on the job. Drug testing does not measure impairment. It measures the concentration of drug metabolities in urine or blood. Unlike measurements of blood alcohol concentration (BAC), drug metabolites are not correlated with impairment or intoxication. They indicate only drug use in the one to two weeks before a urine sample. And, in some instances, they indicate chronic use. Impairment caused by drug use, on the other hand, occurs immediately and declines rapidly within hours. Drug metabolites may linger for days afterwards. Drug metabolite concentrations in urine are a function of (Morgan, 1984; Schartz and Hawks, 1985; MMWR, 1983): • the amount and purity of drug consumed before taking the test, • when the drug was consumed, • whether the person was a chronic user, in which case a certain amount of drug metabolites would be stored in body fat and slowly released, • the person's metabolic rate, and • for metabolites in urine, any dilution effects of urine. The Cadia Hill Gold Mine, located near Orange in Central Western New South Wales, is owned and operated by Cadia Holdings Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Newcrest Mining Limited. Construction including pre-strip mining occurred from 1996 to 1998. The mine was officially opened in October 1998 following commissioning of the concentrator and mine fleet in June of that year. The Cadia Hill orebody is a porphyry related gold and copper system. The final pit has a strip ratio of approximately 1.3:1.0. Mining is undertaken on 15 metre benches using large capacity diesel hydraulic face shovels at an annualised rate of up to 70 Mtpa. The concentrator is currently rated at 17Mtpa and includes the worldÆs largest single line grinding circuit. The feasibility Mineral Resource was estimated at 352 Mt at 0.63 g/t Au and 0.17 per cent Cu. Initial reserves totalled 200 Mt at 0.74 g/t Au and 0.17 per cent Cu yielding a mine life of approximately 12 years. During the pre-production period mine geology systems were developed to support the operation. By design these systems were intended to add value to the business through minimisation of material miss-classification, provision of accurate and timely production information and mapping and reconciliation as a continuous model improvement tool. Variances that would prove to be material to the life of mine plan were recognised during the first year of production. These included identification of additional ore tonnes, higher copper grades and higher gold recoveries relative to the model. Gold grades and copper recoveries also reconciled favourably. Testwork was undertaken to determine the underlying causes of each variance. Re-modelling was then undertaken to capitalise on those variances. The Cadia Hill Gold Mine life of mine plan was re-evaluated with updated geology, grade, geotechnical, metallurgical and environmental inputs. Operating strategies were also reviewed and revised. Despite application of reduced metal prices in the evaluation, the outcome was one of extended mine life with more metal produced at lower cost. Development of robust mine geology systems, including a pro-active reconciliation process contributed to tangible improvement of the Cadia Hill Gold Mine operation. On-going system development and improvement initiatives are planned to add further value for the future.

"Taseko Mines Limited Gibraltar copper-molybdenum mine recommenced operation in 2004 with the initiation of a series of development projects to increase throughput capacity as well as modernize the mine.In the second staged development project, a VTM-1250-WB regrind mill was selected to replace the existing conventional ball regrind mill to achieve a target grind size of 80 % passing 45 µm. In the third staged development project, a second VTM-1250 regrind mill was selected for installation in Concentrator #2, to match the existing Concentrator #1 Vertimill. This resulted in approximately 25% spare regrind capacity in the Concentrator #2 design, complete spare parts interchangeability and potential future expansion capacity to 50,000 t/d with no circuit upgrades.In this context, a study was initiated to assess not only the performance of a Vertimill grinding circuit processing a copper concentrate to a particle size of 80% passing 17 µm but also to provide Taseko’s New Prosperity project specific design information for grinding to particle sizes below 80 % passing 25 µm.The objective of the work described in this presentation was to explore Vertimill ultrafine (sub 100 µm) grinding test methodologies at both the lab and pilot scales, compare the scale-up data with operational data from the VTM1250 at Gibraltar Mines and subsequently apply this information to particle sizes down to 80% passing 17 µm. The support of intersections in coal mines remains an important safety issue, mainly because the large diagonal span compromises the stability of the roof. This structural weakness is further exacerbated if the intersection is developed incorrectly, the pillar corners fail or the crosscuts are angled (not perpendicular). This report details the current support systems used and investigates unplanned falls of ground in intersections in coal mines throughout the United States. A possible failure mechanism is proposed and some suggestions are made to improve the effectiveness of the support in these vital areas.

IN THE COURSE of its investigations directed toward providing strategic metals from domestic sources and toward utilizing power from Federal power projects in West, the Bureau of Mines concluded some years ago that the development of a method for producing electrolytic manganese might well be an important step towards both goals. Accordingly, laboratory investigations were undertaken in 1935. Further studied on a relatively large laboratory scale indicated that electrolytic manganese could be made from domestic ores at a cost not out of line with other nonferrous metals. On the basis of these results, the Electro Manganese Corp. Operating under U.S. Patent 2,119,560 issued to S, M, Shelton and assigned to the Secretary of the Interior for administration, undertook commercial production of electrolytic manganese at Knoxville, Tenn, This company has brought the process through the pilot-plant stage successfully, and is now regularly producing approximately one ton a day.

The principle of personal safety is as old as the human race. The application of this principle to industry is of much more recent origin, and may be said to be almost exclusively the product of the twentieth century. The enormous strides in technique and production mode prior to the turn of the century had been achieved without any real regard for the crippled human by-products of that expansive era. It was accepted that. accidents were inevitable and formed part of the price that must be paid for production. It was not until 1885 that the first Workmen's Compensation Act was passed in Germany making the employer financially liable for injuries suffered on his plant.With awakening social conscience came the first organised efforts to reduce accidents in industry. Early 19th century literature dealing with the development of powerdriven machinery and the growth of industry in Europe contains many references to the unsafe and unhealthy working conditions that accompanied the change-over from the home workshop to the industrial plant. By the year 1900, there were in Germany - and a little later in England governmental regulations dealing with the guarding of hazardous machinery. American industry, now the acknowledged leader in industrial safety, admits freely that when an organised safety movement commenced in that country, there was already a considerable amount of information available to them from European experience. [The Bureau of rides is making a general study of the occurrence of the Clinton red iron ores of Alabama. In the course of this study, it developed that the iron-ore seams of the Woodstock and Bucksville areas were virtually unexplored., and the nature and extent of the ore deposits were undetermined. As a part of the work of the project, the Bureau investigated the occurrence of red iron ore in the .areas. Eighty-four channel samples, representing 317.6 linear feet, were taken from l2 locations along the outcrop of the red iron-ore seams, Ten diamond-drill holes, amounting to 3915.5 linear feet, were drilled. In these areas, commercial- and marginal-grade ores of minable thickness have been shown. It is estimated that 4,500,000 tons of indicated ore and 6,700,000 tens of inferred commercial-grade ore averaging 5.1 feet thick, 47.6 percent Fe, 26.1 percent insoluble, 0.1 percent CaO, and 0.04 percent P; 7,200,000 tins of inferred marginal grade ore averaging 6.1 feet thick, 36.2 percent Fe, .35.0 percent insoluble, 3.9 percent CaO, and 0.14 percent P; and 18,500,000 tons of ferruginous sandstone averaging 12.2 feet thick, 19.2 percent re, 50.1 percent insoluble, 9.6 percent CaO, and 0.14 percent P are present in the areas.. All tonnages are estimated as gross tons of recoverable ore in place, based' on 65-percent mining recovery. In accordance with established policy of the Bureau of Mines of publishing factual data as soon as possible after completion of field work, this description of the Woodstock and Bucksville areas is presented. Deep foundations in Washington, DC have played a role in the city?s development since the 19th century. Designers of government and commercial buildings sought deep foundations initially to minimize settlement of structures. As the western portion of the National Mall was made by filling in portions of the Potomac River, numerous memorials and monuments on the Mall required deep foundations. In recent years deep foundations have been used to allow underground construction for various reasons. Commercial developers have sought to maximize the use of sites by developing below-grade space for parking to meet code requirements and offset the limits on building heights. Underground museum and gallery space has been constructed to expand public space while preserving open space above grade. Access and security concerns have prompted the design of underground visitor centers rather than above-grade structures.
