"More Skill is needed to avoid rather than to handle heavy ground loads." This finding, from a tunneling engineer of the nineteenth century, is still relevant today with all advanced sequential excavation and support methods available whether they are applied in the vertical or horizontal direction. Balanced contractual agreements and documents are important since they provide the spirit and climate at the site. This article aims to describe the means and measures for 'hand mined' shaft and tunnel support as they are available today. Some special construction elements and methods with a perspective in recent developments in order to avoid getting stuck in conservatism are presented as well. If we don't allow new methods, means and measures we may end up with the famous quote "Only women who have already proven they are able to give birth to a healthy baby are allowed to become pregnant!"

The extraction of lignite in open-cast mines has a severe impact on the landscape. Proper landscaping after the shut-down of the mines has always been the statutory responsibility of the mine operator. The large area of the land used for open-cast lignite mining requires special regional planning procedures well in advance of the permitting procedure stipulated in the mining law. The lignite plan determines, among other things, the objectives of land reclamation. These objectives will then be outlined in more detail in the mine operation plans and implemented accordingly. Apart from the actual mining laws and regulations, a large number of environmental laws also determine the process of land reclamation. The success achieved in the field of land reclamation in all mining regions during the recent decades has shown that the lignite mining industry creates new landscapes that do not leave any scars in the countryside and merge very well with it.

A1though the expanding Eltran1 configuration has been used in induced polarization exploration for several years, there has been little application of this method to straight resistivity problems. A comparison of results of resistivity exploration by this technique versus those obtained from Wenner configuration surveys reveals a number of advantages in interpretative resolution as well as in field operation. The application of electrical resistivity to ground-water exploration is well known.= In the past a major portion of this work has been accomplished by use of one or more variations of a technique employing the Wenner3 electrode configuration. With the introduction of the frequency domain technique of induced polarization measurements, used primarily in the exploration for disseminated sulfide deposits, there arose the need for an electrode configuration by which potentials could be measured externally to the current electrode spread in order to minimize coupling between current sending and potential receiving circuits. It was also deemed desirable that the configuration would provide information laterally along profile as well as with depth. To reach these objectives the expanding dipole-dipole configuration (which probably first was used in the electrical transient method of exploration and from which the name 'Eltran' was derived) has been adapted to induced polarization exploration. The deposit lies in amphibolite-facies biotite granite-gneisses of Proterozoic age, 4 km east of a major crustal break known as the Ifewara-Zungeru fault. Gold mineralisation is contained in a zone of quartz-carbonate (mainly calcite) veins and hydrothermally altered gneisses with associated small-scale intrusions along a steeply dipping second-order fault zone that roughly parallels the main fault. Gold is present mainly at grain boundaries between quartz and carbonate as discrete particles up to 100 micrometres in size, in general association with sparse, scattered pyrite, pyrrhotite and some base metal sulphides. Adjacent to the gold-bearing zone the granite-gneisses have been hydrothermally altered with minor volume increase, most notable enrichment being in K2O, S, Pb and Cu (and Au). High concentrations of Th, Y, Ce and Zr in the granite-gneisses imply derivation from S-type granites. It is likely that their high heat production capacity maintained the high temperatures needed to transport gold in the hydrothermal systems. It is most probable that the mineralisation dates from the Pan-African orogeny (650-450 Ma)

Experimental investigations were made into the decoppering of lead, tin, and bismuth using a technique which approximates on the small scale to industrial practice.Decoppering lead with sulphur alone in the absence of tin and silver did not proceed to low copper values. With a minimum of 0·02 per cent Ag or 0·10 per cent Sn, lead was decoppered to less than 0·01 per cent Cuby stirring with 0·2 per cent S over 10 min. Decoppering of tin or bismuth proceeded rapidly to very low levels in the absence of any "catalytic" impurities, at any rate in excess of those concentrations normally encountered in commercially pure tin or bismuth.

The development of the Seminole area into one of the major oil-producing sections of the country has been accompanied by many innovations and departures from former methods of development. On July 1, 1929, two years and nine months from the date of discovery, 20,490 acres were considered proved, and additional acreage is constantly being developed. Because of its peculiar conditions, extent, and rapid rate of development, the Seminole area provided numerous problems, the solution of which necessitated research in connection with practical field operation; as a result, there was a radical departure from methods usually employed in the development of a new field in the Mid-Continent area.

The robustness of the large-sections correction procedure, Hill's fast approximation, Barbery's correction and the PARGEN correction was examined by comparing their ability to reconstruct the true liberation distribution using sectioning data from computer-generated spheres. The results indicate that the flexibility of a correction procedure is related to the assumptions it makes about the continuity of the liberation distribution, locked-particle characteristics and ore texture. Overall, the large-sections procedure appeared to be the most generally applicable. The Hill fast approximation performed well, but this was probably because it partially incorporates the sphere model; the performance of the PARGEN and Barbery corrections varied from case to case.

The 7-mile Flathead Tunnel, located in the central Salish Mountains of northwestern Montana, was constructed between 1966 and 1969, With the contract awarded April 19, 1966, drill and blast tunnel excavation began September 30, 1966, and was completed June 21, 1968, in 488 tunnel-driving days, Peak advance was 66 feet per day. On June 27, 1969, all tunnel concrete lining was completed. Average wall and arch concrete placing rates exceeded 1,700 cubic yards daily, with nearly half of the concrete placed during a severe winter season. Major cost savings in concrete tunnel lining were achieved through a value engineering clause in the contract. Achieving consistent results and high rates of placement in concrete lining ranked equal to ground control in overall tunnel problems. Ground control problems exceeded expectations and were of continual concern throughout excavation, One support collapse in the tunnel and one portal slide condition developed during construction. Critical surface geologic exposures were largely obscured; only a portion could be accurately projected underground, An instrumentation program to gather basic data on rock defamation near the heading face for support purposes was a pioneering effort. The Flathead Tunnel was placed in service on November 7, 1970.

It should be possible to use an oxygen probe to follow iron removal during converting, if local equilibrium is established between iron in the matte and the iron oxides in the fayalitic slag. The oxygen activity is expected to increase strongly as the iron content of the matte decreases (and the iron activity in the matte drops) while the iron oxide activity in the slag remains constant. To test this idea, oxygen activities were measured in synthetic mattes (made up of mixtures of Cu2S, FeS and Ni3S2) when in contact with silica saturated SiO2-FeO slags, and silica and (initially) magnetite saturated SiO2-FeO-Fe3O4slags. The measurements were performed on laboratory scale at 1250°C, using an oxygen probe consisting of an MgO-stabilized zirconia electrolyte and Fe/FeO reference, and containing the sample in a silica crucible. Electrical contact to the matte was by means of a platinum wire. The measured oxygen activity was sensitive to the iron content of the matte, and insensitive to the composition of the gas atmosphere over the melt. The measured oxygen activity was generally close to that predicted by Fact Sage calculations. This indicates that such oxygen activity measurements could be useful to monitor iron removal during converting of nickel-copper-iron mattes.

Concentrations of bright green material in the "Golden Mile" of Kalgoorlie, which carry particularly high gold values, are known locally as "green leader".This assemblage consists largely of quartz, sericitic muscovite, carbonates, and pyrite. Some of the sericitic muscovite contains vanadium, giving the rock its green colour. Vanadium oxides, including nolanite, are also present. Tellurides identified in this study are calaverite, altaite, petzite, melonite, and coloradoite. Native gold was found in most of the samples; some of the gold, at least, has been formed from the decomposition of gold tellurides.It is suggested that mineralizing solutions carrying gold and tellurium leached vanadium from the host rocks and subsequently deposited gold tellurides and vanadium-bearing minerals in the "green leader".

As mining continues toward deeper reserves in thick western US coal fields, the control of mining induced-seismicity has become a priority in many operations in Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming. Gradual floor heave, common in many coal mines, has historically not been a safety issue. However recent occurrences of sudden floor heave accompanied with seismicity in a few deep mines have fueled this investigation. The focus is to identify and study the mechanisms resulting in sudden heaving of the mine floor in western U.S. deep coal mines through analytical calculations and back analyses of an actual event in a cooperative mine. Based on review of available data in three mines, underground observations and back analyses of an actual event, the authors have identified the following contributing factors (1) presence of stiff stratigraphic units and thick seams mined at depths exceeding 1000-ft (2) presence of geological discontinuities reducing the in-situ strength of the coal with calculated factor of safety near 1 for the mine floor (3) mining approaching areas of higher than normal stress gradient associated with previous mining or structural anomalies or surface topographic highs and (4) an additional source of energy triggering sudden failure such as periodic caving or slip along geological discontinuities. Preliminary examination of seismic data for the actual event in the cooperative mine and underground observations excluded fault slip at the mining horizon as the triggering mechanism but highlighted the significance of weak, anisotropic strata conditions near the intersection of two faults.

Ground freezing was utilized to provide complete stability of the excavation face and complete groundwater cut-off for the jacking of the three tunnel boxes for the Interstate 90 / Interstate 93 approach to the Fort Point Channel crossing. Through a wide range of geological conditions and large buried obstructions, the freezing provided complete stability of the face so that a 11.5 m (38 ft) high free standing vertical face could be mined without the need for any additional face support. Obstructions were incorporated into the massive frozen ground matrix, and held in place so that they could be excavated with a minimum of disturbance. The freezing provided an absolute groundwater cut-off, and permitted the work to be done without disturbance to the active rail system immediately above. With the use of instrumentation such as borehole thermocouples, the effectiveness of the freezing was guaranteed and the jacking proceeded with complete confidence and assurance of the ground conditions ahead.

Silver is one of the three major metals produced from the Broken Hill mines. The accurate determination of the silver in these ores, therefore, is of economic importance.With due appreciation of the divergence of opinion of many who are interested in the subject of the determination of silver, the writer has been prompted to present the results of some recent experiments on silver losses during cupellation and conclusions from these experiments in the present paper. The losses of silver in the fire assay for this metal are due to silver retained in the slag during the fusion or scorification of the ore, and to silver volatilized from, and absorbed by the cupel during the process of cupellation.The literature describing the results of experimental work on silver losses due to the above causes is extensive, and the general conclusion of these experiments is that the silver lost in the slag is small, but that lost by cupellation is larger and more variable.The term cupellation loss in this paper refers to the total cupellation loss, no distinction being made between the absorption and volatilization losses.Volatilization loss is shown by King to be 0.5% of the total cupellation loss and, as it is generally accepted among assayers as being only a small fraction of the cupellation loss (3) (5), it will not receive further consideration in this paper.The factors causing the loss of silver by cupellation and the precautions to be obs~rved to reduce the loss in this operation are described in (1), (2), (3), (4) and (5). For a large scale open pit mining and concentrating operation, on a low-grade disseminated ore body, it is possible to set an approximate lower bound on economically feasible operating scales and an approximate upper bound on economically desirable scales in a relatively straight forward manner. The optimum scale ofplanned operations, with respect to the objective ofmaximisation ofthe net value ofthe orebody, will have to be arrived at by iterative planning runs, but it may be expected to lie close to this upper bound. The effects of infrastructural costs and of the addition of a risk premium to the cost of capital, to form the discount rate for planning purposes, are considered theoretically and by worked example. It is concluded that a perceived special, unsystematic, risk should not be accounted for by the use of such a risk premium as this is inducive to placing a greater amount of investment capital at risk, for no greater return-rate to investment.

The history of zinc production in Australia is outlined including attempts to make zinc electrolytically at Cockle Creek, N.S.W. in the last century, the use of horizontal retorts at Cockle Creek and Port Pirie, South Australia, production by electrolysis at Risdon, Tasmania and at Port Pirie using zinc oxide fumed from lead blast furnace slag and production by the Imperial Smelting process at Cockle Creek. Developments in the electrolytic process are described including those in roasting, acid manufacture, leaching, purification, electrolysis, melting and casting. The Imperial Smelting process technology is also outlined. In both processes global technology is reviewed, including important Australian contributions.

Background Population growth and increasingly stringent regulatory controls on water quality across North America have resulted in municipal governments investing heavily in infrastructure to control what are known as Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs).These are events which occur when combined sewers exceed their conveyance capacity during periods of heavy rainfall or snowmelt. The city of Atlanta, Georgia is one such municipality; with a population of over450,000 within city limits and a sewer system servicing 1.2 million including adjacent jurisdictions, the City of Atlanta has a Combined Sewer System (CSS) encompassing approximately 15% of its total 3,540 km (2,200 miles) of sewers. Atlanta’s CSO discharges to local watercourses began to draw fire from environmental groups in the1980s. As a result, in the early 1990s, the City constructed a series of CSO control facilities which provided screening and chlorination at seven CSO discharge points across the CSS watershed. Unfortunately, these facilities were not capable of handling all of the overflows generated due to heavy storm events; frequently, untreated water was bypassed around the treatment facilities. The federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) deemed that water quality standards were being violated by these discharges, and a suit was brought against the City to force a higher standard of compliance. As a result, the City entered into a federal Consent Decree which would bring CSOs into compliance with federal standards by 2007. A critical component of this plan was the design and construction of the West Area CSO Tunnels and Pumping Station. In February 2003 the City’s Department of Watershed Management retained the services of Jordan Jones & Goulding/Hatch Mott MacDonald/Delon Hampton Associates (JDH Joint Venture) to design and provide construction management ser-vices for the project, which was designed to capture combined sewage from three of the City’s existing CSO facilities on the northern end of the CSS watershed. The design consisted of two connected tunnels which would convey the wastewater originating from the North Avenue, Clear Creek, and Tanyard Creek CSO facilities to a submersible wet well pumping station located at the R.M. Clayton Water Reclamation Center (WRC). Since the majority of the effluent stream consisted of storm water, the City elected to design and construct a separate treatment plant. This plant was designed under a separate contract, and is currently under construction.

In panel caving in underground mines, it is essential to characterise and monitor the stress and stability state of production level pillars to ensure the extraction of the mineralised ore column and the safety of workers. Pilar Norte is a sector in the El Teniente mine that forms a pillar between the undercut fronts of the adjacent Esmeralda and Reservas Norte sectors. It exists in a high-stress environment, which may induce damage to the rock mass production pillars. Generally, numerical models are calibrated using observed damage in galleries. This procedure does not discriminate between the structural condition and/or the blasting damage effects. This paper proposes a technique that uses borehole cameras to measure stress-induced damage. This has the advantage of being at the intact rock scale, meaning that the effect of geological structures is negligible and the blasting damage factor is eliminated. Comprehensive geotechnical characterisation and tomography monitoring has been undertaken at Pilar Norte to describe and determine the rock mass behaviour of the production pillars. By combining analytical, empirical and numerical models, a correlation between the measured overbreak recorded by the borehole cameras and the stress level of the pillar was developed. Large lateral forces on bridge foundations due to extreme events such as vessel collisions, earthquakes, and wave forces on storm surges during hurricane events are often the controlling design condition for bridge foundations. A review of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) vessel collision analysis and design codes used in the United States for highway bridges will be presented. The paper includes the background and development of the AASHTO Guide Specification and Commentary for Vessel Collision Design of Highway Bridges (1991) and vessel collision provisions of the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications (3rd Edition 2004 and the approved 2005 Interims). Experience in using the AASHTO codes will be discussed and observations on the adequacy and gaps, comparison with the European Standard Code, and recommendations for immediate and long term needs will be presented.
