"This article explains the ways in which investment on mining infrastructure is a geopolitical issue. It discusses the effect of installing sufficient infra structure to get the product to the world market, and argues that there is a risk involved in depending on traditional suppliers who wish to invest in the infrastructure. It explains how to make a distinction between dedicated purpose infrastructure and general use infrastructure by examining the positions of the main actors in mining projects. It argues that these positions can not be understood as analogous to projects in developed countries. To conclude, infrastructure is a crucial link in the supply chain to market but the relative size of such projects in relation to the economy means that investors decisions in developing countries have quite different implications from those in developed countries."

During the past six or seven years extensive research has been performed on ore samples procured at the Bruns1,vick Tin Mines which is located in the south-west corner of New Brunswi.ck. This property was originally staked by Mount Pleasant Mines and they did considerable metallurgical and geological work on a small copper, zinc and tin deposit. In 1969, the property was obtained by the Sullivan Mining Group and after much geological and diamond drilling work, an entirely separate ore body \Vas located two miles south of the previous workings. The major economic metals in this ore zone are tungsten, bismuth and molybdenite, but many other metals exist as well. As the ore contains a host of different mineral species, it can be seen that considerable time WRS required to develop a practical flow sheet.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines funded a project which addressed objectives concerning irrigation of native plants and inoculation of native plants with vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi. The specific irrigation objectives were 1) to demonstrate the performance capabilities of solid-set irrigation for reclaimed mineland conditions, and 2) to demonstrate and evaluate three irrigation concepts under two separate water supply conditions. The VAM inoculations were to assess irrigation benefits in establishing VAM relationships for transplanted native species. Following the seasonal demonstration (May to September 1983) at 3 separate mine sites, conclusions were made that apply to the 6 state Western mining industry. The demonstration sites were located in Montana, Wyoming, and New Mexico. Positive conclusions were reached for 1) the use of soil moisture sampling with or without irrigation, and 2) the selection of solid-set sprinklers as the irrigation method. The conclusions about the irrigation concepts and strategy were mixed, due to the short-term (1 season) nature of the project. No conclusions could be reached for the VAM inoculations because the study time was too short.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating low-chromium alloy substitutes for type 304 stainless steel (type 304 SS). The purpose of the research is to reduce the chromium content in austenitic stainless steels used for corrosion-resistant applications. Nine Fe-9Cr-12Ni alloys containing additions of 0 to 5 pct Mo, 0 to 2 pct V, and 0 to 2 pct Cu were selected for evaluation. All of the experimental alloys containing 5 pct Mo and an alloy containing 2Mo-2V-2Cu possessed structure and tensile strengths similar to those of type 304 SSe Alloys containing SMo-2V and SMo-2V-2Cu had ac-ceptable welding properties as measured by the Varestraint test. Alloys containing at least 2 pct Mo had cQrrosion resistance comparable to that of type 304 SS in solutions of nitric acid, phosphoric acid, acetic acid, and citric acid. In chlorides, all the experimental alloys were susceptible to localized corrosion and stress corrosion cracking similar to that of type 304 SSe The corrosion properties were established by weight-loss tests, electrochemical polarization tests, and stress-corrosion cracking tests. An Fe-9Cr-12Ni-SMo-2V alloy and an Fe-9Cr-12Ni-SMo-2V-2Cu alloy had a combination of welding properties, tensile properties, and corrosion resistances that were most comparable to those of 304 SS.

The process of drilling and bolting the roof is currently one of the most dangerous jobs in underground mining, resulting in about 1,000 accidents with injuries each year in the United States. To increase the safety of underground miners, researchers froth the Spokane Research Laboratory of- the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are applying neural network technology to rite classification of mine roof strata in terms of relative strength. In this project, the feasibility of using a monitoring system on a roof drill to assess the integrity of a mine roof and warn a roof drill operator when a weak layer is encountered is being studied. Using measurements taken while a layer is being drilled, one can convert the data to suitably scaled features and classify the strength of the layer with a neural network. The feasibility of using a drill monitoring system to estimate the strength of successive layers of rock was demonstrated in the laboratory.

The problem of reliable extreme event modeling of large diameter piles under enormous structural or kinematic loads has gained more attention in recent years. In particular, the soil response around the foundation and impacts to buried adjacent infrastructure has gained interest. One of the principal shortcomings with analysis of large diameter pile foundations under extreme event lateral loading is the reliance on conventional beam on elastic foundation methods, which do not model the soil field response around the pile. These methods are limited for large displacement problems, and for large diameter piles. However, the fundamental interactions between steel and concrete, and structure to soil are difficult to constrain, especially in large strain problems where the structural elements become inelastic. The non-linear interaction of the structural materials and soil is desirable so that assessment of stress changes in the field and effects on adjacent facilities can be modeled. A numerical modeling methodology that addresses these shortcomings has been developed. This method utilizes the interaction of brittle concrete with discrete steel reinforcing and casing in a robust manner capturing inelastic non-linearity in both soil and structure. This paper presents a comparison study of the method, wherein three different validation studies were made to data from full scale laterally loaded pile testing. INTRODUCTION Extreme event lateral loading of deep foundations comes in many forms including earthquakes, landsliding, tsunamis, hurricanes, surface fault rupture, liquefaction induced lateral spreads and many more. These extreme events induce loads on foundations far greater than service or strength loads. Perhaps the most dangerous extreme event loads are those of large soil displacements such as landslides, lateral spreads, and surface fault rupture, wherein the soil surrounding the foundations can move laterally 100 mm to 3 m! In these extreme event loading scenarios, small diameter foundations are pushed past their limits and many engineers prefer large diameter deep foundations for these situations. These deep foundations of diameter 900 mm or greater may be auger cast in place piles, cast in drilled hole piles, cast in steel shell piles, cased or uncased drilled shafts, bored precast piles, etc. For convenience in this paper, large diameter deep foundations will be referred to as Large Diameter Shafts (LDS). In LDS, steel may or may not used as a shell around the perimeter of the concrete and/or as internal tensile reinforcement. The interaction between brittle concrete and ductile steel within and/or along the perimeter of the LDS is critical to understanding the non-linear inelastic behavior of LDS for problems of large lateral displacements from extreme events.

"Granular activated carbon is widely used in the gold mining industry for gold extraction from aurocyanide-containing slurry. The extraction process can employ carbon as part of the gold recovery operation for various circuit designs including carbon-in-pulp (CIP), carbon-in-column (CIC), and carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuits. However, various qualities of activated carbon exist and the durability of the material can change significantly from source to source. Handling this expensive reagent can pose challenges when fine carbon losses occur in the CIP, CIC, and CIL circuits. Additionally, any gold that is adsorbed to these carbon fines can also be lost by various mechanisms including carbon attrition and fracturing, inefficient coarse-fine separation, and poor carbon fines capture. With the above in mind, a series of tests were conducted to investigate standardizing simple laboratory methods for testing carbon quality. A standard procedure beyond or enhancing ASTM methods can serve as additional starting points for evaluating carbon specific to the gold industry. The investigation focused on size distribution, flatness, wet attrition resistance, surface area, gold kinetics, and gold loading. The final results provided information to generate an equation for ranking carbon samples to plant performance.IntroductionActivated carbon for use in gold extraction is amongst the most commonly found processes in modern gold-milling plants. Although gold losses are inevitable in the milling process, operators often focus on the importance of maximizing gold recovery. The No. 2 Ore-shaft, at Mount Isa Mines Limited, involving the use of boreholes as ropeways for the upper portion thereof, constitutes, we believe, a unique feature in hoisting installations. The boreholes were sunk from the surface to a depth of 390 ft., thus eliminating the necessity of erecting the hoist at an underground location or construction of the shaft for this distance. Fig. 1, a diagrammatic cross-section through the shaft, shows the complete installation from the surface down to the first loading station below No. 7 haulage level.During the latter part of 1936, conditions encountered in sinking the Main Ore shaft made it impracticable and uneconomical to continue deepening it to serve haulage levels below the present No. 5-level. Plans were therefore made for an interior shaft, to serve new lower levels, that terminated above No. 5-level so that ore hoisted could be drawn off on this level and transported to the Main Ore shaft for final conveyance to the mill crude ore bin.Referring again to Fig. 1, it is apparent that the section above No. 4-level, if opened out to full shaft size, would be inoperative and would serve no useful purpose except, possibly, as a ventilation duct. Original plans therefore did not include continuation of the shaft above No. 4-level. Excavation of a hoist room upon No. 5-level; erection of sheave wheels just below No. 4-level, and a long inclined ropeway leading from the hoist to the sheaves, were incorporated in the general layout. "In order to investigate the effect of grid-form deep mixing walls as a countermeasure for liquefaction damage to roads and private houses in Urayasu, Japan, three dynamic centrifuge model tests were conducted. Urayasu is located in the Tokyo Bay area, and private houses in the city incurred severe damage due to liquefaction during the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. In grid-form deep mixing walls design, the distance between grid-form walls is critical to prevent liquefaction. This study clarifies the relationship between the settlement of private houses and the distance between grid-form walls under the conditions that exist in Urayasu.INTRODUCTIONMany private houses in Urayasu, Japan suffered severe damages due to liquefaction during the 2011 Tohoku earthquake (Photograph 1). Fig. 1 shows the location of Urayasu and the maximum acceleration of the observed seismic waves in the Tokyo Bay area. At Urayasu, the duration of the seismic waves (hereafter called the Urayasu Wave) was about 2 min. The maximum acceleration was 1.57 m/s2 (Fig. 2), which is relatively small. The damages occurred in the land reclamation areas that consist of loose sand with an SPT-N value less than 10.To prevent liquefaction in future, it is necessary to adopt suitable countermeasures in the areas where many private houses suffered severe damages. Grid-form deep mixing walls are one such countermeasure. Fig. 3 and Photograph 2 show grid-form deep mixing walls. Walls are constructed using the deep cement mixing method. Fig. 4 shows a plane view of planned grid-form deep mixing walls for roads and existing private houses in Urayasu."

For the purpose of comparing the amounts of dust produced by various mining operations, samples of atmospheric dust were collected during a complete cycle of drilling, blasting and mucking at or near the face of the Bureau's Mount Weather testing adit while the efficiency of several types of stemming in metal-mine blasting was being investigated. Deep-sea hydrothermal vents (hereafter chimneys) are commonly found on the new crust forming along divergent plate boundaries. Related to the chimney cycle from birth to death, it is hard to define the growth stage of the chimney due to a brief life span of the venting hydrothermal plume. Here we try to categorize the mineral magnetic properties of the chimneys according to their venting fluid-temperatures. Hydrothermal sulfide deposits in the Southwest Pacific were explored in 2012 and chimneys were collected using remotely operated vehicle (ROV) and Grab with AV camera (GTV). In the present study, mineral magnetic properties of three Cu-rich chimneys were measured: a high-temperature chimney showing a venting fluid-temperature of about 200°C (ROV01); a lowtemperature chimney of about 80°C (GTV01); and an inactive chimney (ROV02). The chimneys were sliced to ~1 cm intervals from core to outer margin. Magnetic properties of ROV01 are dominated by pyrrhotite, except for the most outer part that experienced severe oxidation. Concentration and grain-size of pyrrhotite are relatively low and fine respectively. In the GTV01, pyrrhotite, dominant in the core, is gradually mixed with hematite toward the outer margin of the chimney due to secondary oxidation. Both the concentration and grain-size of the magnetic minerals are greater compared to the GTV01. High concentration and large grain-size of magnetic minerals characterize ROV02. Dominant magnetic phases are pyrrhotite, hematite, and goethite. In particular, the most outer margin shows the presence of magnetite produced possibly by magnetotactic bacterial activity. Such distinctive contrast in magnetic concentration, grain-size, and mineralogy among three different types of chimneys enables the life stage of the Cu-rich chimneys to be determined through a mineral magnetic study.

Currently two of the most important characteristics of construction aggregates are (a) the particle size distribution (psd) and (b) the “shape” of the aggregate particles. The long established test methods and standards for these properties require substantial resources and most suppliers can take samples and conduct tests at intervals measured in days (psd) or even months (shape). Furthermore these tests require time: so the results are available only after material has been stockpiled or shipped. In the rare cases where problems are found the out-of-spec material has often been shipped to points unknown. There are substantial advantages to be obtained if the psd and other geometrical properties could be obtained from the material as it moves through the production processes and if the results could be reported back within seconds or minutes to Plant Control Managers. This paper describes a single on-line system used to evaluate production of crushed material in a production quarry. The system consists of an enclosure (containing the camera and lighting etc.) mounted over a production belt. Images are fed by fiber optic cable to a nearby control room where the data are analyzed; stored; displayed; and made available for integration into a process control system. Numerous forms of display can be created according to the needs of the producer. Once programmed by an automation engineer all functions of operation are fully automated. The system has permitted over 400 tests per hour with a feed back time less than 2 seconds. Sufficient geometrical measurements are made so that many different “shape” factors can be computed on a similar time scale. The paper summarizes the results from approximately 100 shifts of about 8 hours each and compares the imaging method with the current standard hand methods. Study of the data generated showed that, when combined with additional plant information, the system can be used to generate additional useful control information.

It is not proposed in this paper to go into all of the details of the problem. Instead, it mill be assumed here that the intrusive has the form and characteristics represented in Fig. I. According to W. 11. Emmons minerals are not deposited in appreciable quantities below the "dead line." Important amounts of ores of virtually all metals may be found around summit cupolas, but only gold, copper and zinc (in limited quantities) are usually associated with trough cupolas. Most students of ore deposits agree that temperature changes are largely instrumental in precipitating many ores in the "hood" and that the difference in temperature between the intrusive and that of the country rock may be the chief factor in determining the mineralogy of a deposit. A problem then of some interest is to correlate the principal physical features of the intrusive with the phenomena of heat conduction as evidenced by the cooling curves and the isothermal surfaces. Mathematical Theory In order to show the possible application of heat conduction to the interpretation of the processes of metalliferous deposition associated with intrusives, it will be as- sumed that the intrusive is a large par-allelopiped of dimensions, 2l, 2m, 2n. Grinding of iron ore is an essential step to utilise ore fines for pelletisation needed for DRI units. While preparing iron ore pellets for DRI production, the iron ore needs extensive grinding which is highly energy consuming step causing the process to become non-viable in some cases. In the present paper an attempt has been made to evaluate grinding performance of thermally treated ore compared to normal ore grinding. Such thermal pre-treatment has been found to reduce the energy requirement with lower consumption rate of grinding media. It has been observed that by applying thermal shock the ore is rendered weak with improved grindability. The stresses generated due to thermal treatment may extend existing micro-cracks in the ore and in some cases it may even nucleate fresh cracks. Experimental studies carried out on thermally treated hematitite ore reveals that the heating to 400¦C followed by water quenching can cause a reduction of 45 per cent in grinding energy. FLSmidth-Summit Valley Technologies has been a leader in gold processing equipment for nearly two decades. Over the past several years an extensive research and development effort has led to improvements in Mercury Abatement systems and process efficiency in Adsorption Desorption and Regeneration (ADR) or "Carbon" plant operations. Two technologies will be discussed that are focused on efficiency improvements followed by an explanation of Mercury Abatement systems. Gold and silver can be desorbed from carbon in several ways. FLSmidth has made significant improvements to the Pressure ZADRA process allowing for lower energy consumption and lower capital costs. This patented process is known as the Split-ZADRA Strip method. Split-ZADRA allows a plant to elute loaded carbon in a semi-continuous fashion. This increases the grade of the Pregnant Strip Solution, improves electrowinning efficiency, reduces capital equipment costs, and reduces energy requirements. During desorption and electrowinning for the Pressure ZADRA process, the pressure and temperature of the circulating strip solution is changed multiple times. A self-contained heating and cooling system has been developed which decreases the energy requirements for elution. Mercury Abatement technology has become increasingly important in recent years. Along with FLSmidth Summit Valley Technologies' complete Mercury Retorting Systems, FLS-SVT has developed systems for the capture and removal of mercury from electrowinning cell and strip solution exhaust, Carbon Regeneration exhaust, and the dore furnace exhaust. This paper describes each of the technologies introduced above and their success in operational gold and silver mines. Much interesting data on cemented carbides has been published over a period of years which, when classified and pieced together, gives a clear picture of this special branch of powder metallurgy. This is an attempt to present the essential information in an ordered account.THE HARD CARBIDES-THEIR PROPERTIES AND PREPARATIONThe so-called hard or refractory carbides are the carbides of a number of metals which are grouped together in the Periodic Classification. These metals are in groups IV, V and VI. They are titanium, vanadium, chromium, zirconium, niobium (columbium), molybdenum, hafnium, tantalum and tungsten. These carbides have attracted the attention of chemists because of their remarkable properties. They possess very high melting points, and are rather difficult to prepare in the pure state. Their outstanding propertyis their extreme hardness, which they share with certain other carbides, such as those of silicon and boron. In addition, these compounds possess distinctly metallic properties, such as lustre (in fused specimens) and high thermal conductivities.(l)t They are capable of forming alloys in two ways:1. With metals, particularly those of the iron group. 2. With each other (a case of solid solubility).The constitution of these substances is not that of ordinary salts, which obey the usual valency rules, but must be likened to that of certain intermetallic compounds. Actually they are "interstitial" compounds(2), that is, they are formed from the ordinary metallic lattice by the insertion of the relatively small carbon atoms in the interstices.. The energy required to fill the lattice completely is high, and this explains the difficulty often found in obtaining the exact stoicheiometric compound. Thus the carbides can have a range of composition, and can be considered as solutions of carbon in the respective metals.Physical Properties of the CarbidesThe hardness of these compounds is so great that it is difficult to compare the individual compounds on this basis. Becker(l) gives values on Moh's scale, which are not very accurate and are of no great value. Burden(3) has reproduced a diagram by Hatfield which indicates that the cemented carbides are between 1,400 and 2,000 on the Vickers diamond scale. However, the pure carbides are harder, tungsten carbide being about 2,200. Hoyt(4) describes a method of measuring hardness applicable to powdered specimenswhereby the powder is rubbed on a standard block of cemented tungsten carbide under standard conditions, and the rate of wear is determined. This paper reviews groundwater issues leading to a secondary grouting program at the Chattahoochee Tunnel that was implemented subsequent to the contact grouting program. The secondary grouting program was developed based on infiltration data, geology, and testing programs. This paper includes a brief description of the geological features encountered, as well as describing the grouting program. The success of this grouting operation has been quantified by several methods, and is presented to help others project the costs and benefits of this type of program. Review of initial results and refinements of techniques are also discussed.

We can be proud of our growth over the 61 years since the inaugural meeting in Adelaide in April, 1893, which followed suggestions from a provisional committee of mining men, formed in 1892 in Broken Hill.We can also be proud of our technical achievements in the fields of economic geology, mining and metallurgy.Should we be content with the growth of our mining and metallurgical industries over these years? My answer is in the negative.
