Many people are familiar with the use of marine echo sounders which are used by fishermen to monitor water depth and locate schools of fish. Similar technology has recently been used in some West Australian mines to provide detailed maps of ore contacts and other geological structures. Whilst drillhole intersections provide details of the location of a contact at a point, echo sounding can be used to obtain a continuous profile of the contact. A series of profiles together with drillhole intersection data can be used to build a more accurate geological model than can be inferred from drillhole intersections alone. The benefits of this are more complete ore extraction, less dilution and the ability to make more informed financial decisions. This paper presents a case history which demonstrates the successful application of the technology.

This paper presents the system, the strength of column, the design concept, and the applications with four case histories from the past project as the general aspect of Geo-Column (trade mark of single soil-cement column by SCC Technology, Inc.). In the system, it shows the installation process and drilling/mixing tool with the mixing process. In the design concept, it shows how to design Geo-Column against the vertical and horizontal load. Finally, it shows the applications with four case histories, (1) building mat foundation, (2) isolated foundation on the pedestrian bridge, (3) bridge spread footing and slope erosion control wall in the channel, and (4) cut-off wall and shoring wall in the underpass roadway to the railroad.

Design for safety is critical to metallurgical plants, due to the inherently dangerous nature of their processes. Two significant areas of concern are: 1. preventing catastrophic process failures that cause damage or injury; and 2. operational safety that directly affects those working in or living near the plant. Process safety involves human behaviour, but the designer can eliminate or control hazards by engineering approaches, and control impacts through the design of the operating procedures. The tools available to guide safe facility design include bowtie analysis, hazard analysis, and hazard and operability studies. Clean plant design principles can guide the design process to address in-plant occupational health and safety issues. Auditing and review is a key part of the overall design process.

This paper describing the mining practices at a 100 per cent mechanized mine working the Pittsburgh or No. 8 coal bed in eastern Ohio is one of a series being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The purpose of assembling this data is to place before those interested in the mining industry the methods employed and the cost data on the items involved in the winning of the coal and its removal to the railroad car at the tipple. Mining costs are governed by the mining method used, which is selected for its adaptability to local natural physical conditions such as the nature and thickness of the coal, its dip, the character of the roof and floor, and the thickness of the overlying strata.

Information to assist them in making the decision to retreat mine and in selecting the best retreat mining technique for specific mining conditions. 2. Information on mine planning that will enable them to design mine layouts for safe and efficient retreat mining. 3. Information that will enable them to develop a section foreman's handbook. The manual has been organized to gradually increase in level of detail as the reader progresses from beginning to end. Individuals interested in an overview of retreat mining can confine themselves to the first few chapters. Those interested in mine planning, should read the middle chapters as well. Those interested in the development of a foreman's handbook should read the entire manual.

Se desarrollaron materiales compuestos de matriz polimérica para toberas en cohetes; con dos zonas: una térmica para soportar elevadas temperaturas de combustión y una estructural que resista los esfuerzos generados. La zona térmica se elaboró con materiales de comportamiento ablativo, probados a temperaturas de hasta 2950°C durante dos minutos, los cuales fueron reforzados con polvo cerámico y/o subproducto de la industria siderúrgica (cerámico 2). Con base en los resultados obtenidos del comportamiento de térmico y de conductividad térmica del material ablativo, se construyó la zona estructural en materiales compuestos fibroreforzados (vidrio y carbono) con matriz polimérica. Los moldes se diseñaron en SolidWorks y se fabricaron por prototipado en ABS rápido y se elaboraron machos disgregables en poliuretano. En la zona térmica se usó un procedimiento de vaciado con vibración con diferentes tipos de matrices (poliéster, vinilester, caucho silicona) y de laminación para la zona estructural. Se evaluó el desempeño mediante simulación de las condiciones reales de operación mediante llama de oxicorte y quemador de ACPM, observando el efecto en la pérdida de peso, espesor, diferencial de temperatura, cambio de propiedades mecánicas, etc.; encontrándose un positivo comportamiento del sistema con matriz de resina vinilester reforzado con polvo cerámico 1 y buenos resultados con cerámico 2, así como una estabilidad en la zona estructural construida con fibras de vidrio y carbono. This report describes the development of an electronic system which detects unsafe slack and overload conditions in underground mine hoist ropes. The Slack and Overload Rope Protection System (SORPS) includes a fail-safe load cell inserted between the rope and the conveyance, and an accelerometer mounted on the conveyance. Signals from these transducers are telemetered via a radio link to the hoist control room, where they are combined with drum speed and chair status in a microprocessor-based decision and display unit. Abnormally high external force levels are detected as discrepancies between rope tension and cage acceleration; conveyance weight is inferred continuously. Hazardous conditions are displayed to the hoist operator, along with general hoist status. The system has been tested in a working mine for approximately two years. The report contains specifications, design data and field test experience generated under the SORPS program. It also includes information on dynamic modeling, vibration environment, the status of existing slack detection systems, and applicable control strategies.

Today, mine backfilling has become an integral part of mining operations, both from a local and overall ground control point of view, and as regards mining techniques and environmental considerations. During the past decade, substantial research has been carried out to contribute to the better understanding of the mechanisms involved in mine backfill behaviour. This work involved analytical, experimental and numerical studies at different scales. Accordingly, this work has been aimed at developing backfill design guidelines for actual working conditions. Backfill design for deep mining conditions is complex and requires understanding of various elements. The most important of these elements are: backfill inherent strength parameters, backfill placement method, stope geometry and interaction between backfill and host rock. The mobilization of backfill strength parameters controls the backfill behaviour and thus, its failure mode. It is believed that the governing boundary conditions and backfill-rock interaction influence the backfill strength mobilization significantly. Accordingly, the interaction between backfill and host rock is an influential factor in overall backfill behaviour under applied loads. The focus of this research is to investigate the backfill-rock interaction, considering a nonlinear behaviour for both backfill and rock mass. Assuming typical stope geometry, the FLAC code was used to model the complex boundary condition associated with narrow vein mining conditions and to simulate the backfill behaviour. A comprehensive numerical study was conducted and the results obtained were compared against field observations. The analysis of findings provides qualitative results, which can be used for backfill design. The purpose of the work described in this publication was to determine, on a pilot-plant scale, the practicability of concentrating low-grade bauxite deposits to render them suitable for the extraction of alumina. In 1941, when it became apparent that the United States might soon be drawn into war, the government, through its various agencies and bureaus, began to stimulate and increase production from domestic reserves of bauxite, which is the principal raw material for the production of aluminum. This activity, which was centered in Arkansas, where 95 percent of the domestic reserve is situated, reached peak production when enemy submarine warfare greatly hindered imports from foreign sources. During this period the average domestic production in Arkansas rose from approximately 300,000 long wet tons to something over 6,000,000 tons in 1943.

Gold in the stibnite veins of Costerfield, Victoria, was described in 1922 1, prior to any mineragraphic examination, as (a) free yellow gold (b) free rusty gold and (c) combined gold. The free yellow gold occurs in quartz and will amalgamate with mercury. The free gold of dull, rusty or copper-red colour occurs in massive stibnite and has been stated to resist amalgamation with mercury. The dull colour is only skin deep and the colour is bright when the rusty gold is scratched. The appearance of the rusty gold is spongy or cellular and it generally occurs near small cavities in the stibnite. The suggestion that the cellular character indicated the removal of a certain amount of stibnite leaving a residue of se.condary gold cannot be sustained.It now appears probable that the rusty gold is formed by the primary dissociation of a gold antimonide and is distinct in origin from the normal yellow gold which is deposited with quartz or stibnite from auriferous mineral solutions.The combined gold referred to in the earlier paper was the gold contained in the stibnite as revealed by assay. Such gold was at first thought to be either dissolved in the stibnite or else present as free interstitial particles too minute for observation in transmitted light in thin sections.Subsequent examination of numerous polished,surfaces disclosed the small particles of gold occurring in the grain boundaries in aggregates of fine grained stibnite 2. The assumption that all the gold in the stibnite, as revealed by assay, occurred in this way is now known to be incorrect, because limited amounts of a gold antimonide have been found in the veins.

Mechanical properties of the as-cast and heat-treated alloys have been related to constitution, determined by x-ray diffraction and microscopic methods. Investigations include the effects of aging and of small nickel additions on the properties of the alloys.

BHP BillitonÆs new rotary iron ore car dumper installation at Finucane Island (Port Hedland) was constructed to increase the total capacity of the port facility from 110 Mtpa to 120 Mtpa and to allow for incremental capacity increases in future. The arrangement of the dumper is similar to other car dumper installations existing on site. To construct the facility, approximately 120 000 m3 of material was excavated in six months, to a total depth of 22 m. The saline water table was nominally 6 m below ground level and the materials excavated varied depending on depth, ranging from sand to mangrove muds. There was a need to retain the sides of the excavation and limit the amount of water from entering the excavated area. This was required to allow excavation to progress and had to be maintained during construction of the permanent concrete and steel facility. The excavation was backfilled progressively as construction progressed. Various retaining wall methods were investigated with the preferred option being sheet piles secured by walers and ground anchors. Detailed electronic models were developed and assessed to complete the final design arrangement. Dewatering bores around the perimeter of the excavation removed the groundwater to intercepted sumps within the site. A strict and methodical program was developed to monitor the integrity of the temporary works and the quality of the groundwater. The works were completed on time despite the following challenges being encountered: availability of resources and equipment, movement of mobile plant on æboggyÆ materials, difficulty driving sheet piles into material at depth, drilling of ground anchors to 32 m, grouting of ground anchors, greater than expected groundwater flows, and the risk of hydrocarbons within the groundwater. The lessons learned from the use of the retention system and, in particular, the associated construction challenges overcome, provide a sound basis for similar work in this buoyant resource market. The conference paper describes the temporary works options investigated, design considerations and processes, construction methodology and challenges encountered, and the monitoring systems developed. Lessons learned are also discussed.

Synthesis of alumina-mullite-silicon carbide composite (Al2O3-Al6Si2O13-SiCw) was obtained in situ by carbothermal reduction of a mixture of kaolin and two different silica sources. The carbothermal reduction was carried out in a horizontal tube furnace under flow of argon gas. The standard Gibbs energy minimization method was used to calculate the equilibrium composition of the reacting species. The synthesized products were mixtures of alumina, mullite and silicon carbide in the form of whiskers. The effects of adding two different silica sources of rice husk ash and silica powder to the mixture of kaolin and activated carbon were investigated. XRD and SEM analyses indicate complete reaction of precursors to yield Al2O3- Al6Si2O13-SiC as product powders, with the SiC having whisker morphology.

"The El Indio mine treats a complex mixture of copper and gold/silver ores at its plant located in the high Andes in Chile. The plant utilizes conventional crushing, grinding and flotation to produce a copper/gold/silver concentrate. Due to high levels of arsenic and antimony, the flotation concentrate must be roasted prior to custom smelting. The flotation tailings is leached and additional gold recovered from a CIP circuit. Present and future metallurgical developments are discussed in this paper. INTRODUCTIONIn late 1989, LAC Minerals purchased 65 % of Bond International Gold and as a result became controlling shareholder of the El Indio Mine through Bond and San Jose.El Indio is a world class, complex sulphide gold deposit located in the hydrothermal alteration belt of the Andes mountains in the 4th Region of Chile. The mine is located in the high Andes about 185 km east of La Serena at an elevation of 4000 meters. The 1450 workers at El Indio live in the mine camp at 3200 m and on days off are bussed to La Serena.The El Indio mine was started in 1979 by St. Joe Minerals Corp., bought by Bond in 1987 and subsequently by LAC in 1989. The mine has produced 2.7 million oz. of gold, 9.5 million oz. of silver and 170,000 t of copper since start of operation. The mill is currently operating at a rate of 2850 t/d and producing a copper/gold concentrate which is roasted to produce a copper/gold calcine and high quality, saleable crude AS2O3 . A small proportion of the precious metals are also produced as bullion from the leach circuit.Total production during 1989 was 224,197 ounces of gold, 1,309,342 ounces of silver and 26,968 tonnes of copper. The average cash cost of production for the period was U.S. $96 per ounce of gold, net of by-product credits. The average realized price was $5. 30 per ounce of silver and $1.14 per pound of copper."

The majority of the tailings dam operations in South Africa will be required to comply with the new Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) within the next one to three years, depending on the dam classification and the requirements of the respective investors and insurers. With up to 72 auditable requirements, the implementation of the Standard needs careful planning and prioritization. This paper focuses on the practical steps to GISTM compliance for tailings facilities in operation in South Africa. The discussions are based on current practices, South African regulations, and industry standards requirements. The possible changes in dam classifications and the associated requirements are presented.

Obtaining financing for mining and exploration projects has been difficult for the last several years, particularly for junior companies. Today, though, the purse strings of investors appear to be loosening, leaving the industry with many questions about financing in the coming years. How have capital markets and exploration spending changed? Are there signs of improvement? Where has capital been raised in private, public markets, stock exchanges, private equity, etc.? What companies successfully raised capital in the last year? How are they spending it? How are traditional and alternative funding sources investing in mining? What are the issues mining companies need to know about when tapping alternative sources of capital? Those were some of the questions that were answered at the Current Trends in Mining Finance conference, sponsored by SME and the New York Section April 26-28. Held in New York City, the conference attracted 115 professionals who work on the finance and economic side of the mining industry. Three of the conference organizers talked with Mining Engineering about the conference and the state of financing in the industry today. Tim Alch (TA) is managing director with Behre Dolbear & Co. "The first known use of activated carbon dates back to the Ancient Egyptians who utilized its adsorbent properties for purifying oils and medicinal purposes. Centuries later, the early ocean going vessels stored drinking water in wooden barrels, the inside of which had been charred. (However, by modern definition the carbon used in these applications could not truly be described as activated.) By the early 19th century, both wood and bone charcoal was in large scale use for the decolorization and purification of cane sugar.However, it was not until the beginning of the First World War that the potential of activated carbon was really capitalized upon. The advent of gas warfare necessitated the development of suitable respiratory devices for personnel protection. Granular activated carbon was used to this end as, indeed, it still is today.By the late 1930's there was considerable industrial scale use of carbon for both gaseous and liquid phase application and new manufacturing processes had been developed to satisfy the needs of industry. During the 1939-1945 war, a further significant development took place - the production of more sophisticated chemically impregnated carbon for the removal of both war and nerve gases."

The year 1987 marked the centennial of the beginning of modern hydrometallurgy. On October 19, 1887 British Patent No. 14174 entitled Process of Obtaining Gold and Silver from Ores was issued*. The discovery was made by John Steward MacArthur (Fig. 1), a chemist-metallurgist, supported and assisted by Robert and William Forrest, two brothers practicing medicine in Glasgow. The discovery was made in the basement of their clinic. The process, which became known as the cyanidation process in reference to the alkali cyanide reagent used, immediately received industrial success in New Zealand in 1889 and in South Africa in 1890t. It displaced the chlorination method which had been in use. In 1903 MacArthur was awarded the first Medal of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy in London1131 - The cyanidation process was responsible for the doubling of gold production in the world in the two decades which followed its first application (Fig. 2). To the modern metallurgist, it may be surprising to think of MacArthur coming across an obscure reagent such as an alkali cyanide as a leaching agent for gold ores. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the background and the factors that led to this invention, the development of the understanding of the process, and the application of modern technology.
