A senior design project is required by all accredited mining engineering degree programs. Often referred to as the capstone of a student’s education, this project is expected to include all the important components of the preliminary economic assessment of a mineral prospect, including orebody modeling, grade and reserve estimation, selection of mining and processing methods, preliminary mine design, access and utilities, environmental compliance and reclamation, and financial analysis. Two of the authors (Campbell and Holdsworth) completed a senior project in 2021. They analyzed the Akie zinc deposit located in Canada. This paper summarizes the economic analysis portion of that project. The two primary objectives of this economic analysis were risk reduction and integration of economics and engineering. Addressing risk is important as risk is one of the primary concerns in mining investments. Risk reduction was the primary concern through the entirety of this economic analysis. Integration of financial analysis and engineering design was the first component of a risk reduction design. This allowed for financial and engineering design to be optimized in conjunction with one another. This produced benefits from both a financial and an engineering prospective. From a market, economic, and financial risk perspective, risk was reduced by forecasting multiple metal price scenarios, and then addressing the Akie project’s economic viability at each price point. Lastly, risk was address through consideration of nontraditional financing options. The project also sought to minimize financial and human capital risk, by proposing mutually beneficial cooperative social relationships and favorable work, schedules. Description of that work is not included in this paper.

A packed column (or static tube) flotation system is an innovative technology which utilizes a controlled dispersion reagent scheme and a new machine. The unique aspect of the machine is its packed-bed design permitting an unlimited froth bed height with countercurrent water washing for effective processing of fine particles. In operation, the conditioned ore slurry is fed into the middle section of the column where separation processes begin. Air, introduced at the bottom of the packed column, contacts the hydrophobic particles and floats them off continuously as the feed is added, while the gangue sinks to the base of the column. The system functions efficiently because intimate particle-bubble contact is achieved by the packing design which has no moving parts and requires no ancillary air-bubble generator. Other attractive features of the packed column flotation include high throughput, low power requirements, and simple control. Results from laboratory and pilot plant tests of this system show remarkable improvements over current industrial practices on a wide variety of ores and coals.

The method of selection of weight value for the adjustment is discussed. Finally a calculating method in regard to saving computer memory units and speeding up calculating process is described.

When Bridger Coal Company transformed their operations from surface mining to an underground longwall operation their plans included not only the addition of new mining equipment but also surface fans for a blowing (supply) air ventilation system. The original system concept included a propane gas fired air heater to preheat the intake air during cold weather and a dual parallel fan and duct system. One fan operated to ventilate the mine while the other fan was for stand-by emergency operation. Equipment proposals were submitted in March, 2005 based on the dual parallel fan system. Discussions conducted during the equipment selection process revealed that several alternative system design concepts were available. The alternative concepts included innovation features that not only saved space and cost but also reduced operating expense as well. Many of the features were incorporated into the final design of the system. A comparison of the original system concept and final installation design are presented in the paper in addition to details of the features and the derived benefits.

Weathered mine waste consists of oxidized primary minerals and chemically unstable secondary phases that can be sources of readily soluble metals and acid rock drainage. Elevated concentrations of metals such as Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn are observed in deionized water-based leachate solutions derived from complex sedex and Cu-Pb-Zn mine wastes. Leachate (USGS FLT) from the Elizabeth mine, a massive sulfide deposit, has a pH of 3.4 and high concentrations of Al (16700 ug/L), Cu (440 ug/L), and Zn (8620 ug/L). Leachate from the sedex Faro mine has a pH of 3.5 and high concentrations of Al (2040 ug/L), Cu (1930 ug/L), Pb (2080 ug/L), and Zn (52900 ug/L). In contrast, higher-pH leachates produced from tailings of polymetallic vein deposits have order of magnitude lower metal concentrations. These data indicate that highly soluble secondary mineral phases exist at the surface of waste material where the samples were collected. Sulfide minerals from all sites exhibit differential degrees of weathering, from dissolution etched grain rims, to rinds of secondary minerals, to skeletal remnants. These microscale mineral-dissolution textures enhance weathering and metal leachability of waste material. Besides the formation of secondary minerals, sulfide grains from dried tailings samples may be coated by amorphous Fe-Al-Si minerals that also adsorb metals such as Cu, Ni, and Zn.

There is as yet no accepted method of predicting flotation frother performance in plant processes based on laboratory scale characterisation techniques. This paper investigates the use of dynamic surface tension, using the maximum bubble pressure method, as a means of evaluating frothers and frother mixtures. An adsorption model is presented, which has been used to quantify the role of frother type and concentration during frother bubble interaction, based on the correlation of model parameters to physical frother characteristics. This approach was found to provide useful insight with respect to blending and selection of flotation frothers to meet specified flotation performance criteria.

The past several decades have seen the rapid expansion of multinational mining companies? exploration and production activities around the globe. This trend has resulted from a number of factors, including increased demand for resources as a result of worldwide economic growth, the diminishment of known and proven reserves, rising commodity prices, technology improvements, and the liberalization of investment regimes in developing countries with significant natural resources. With those opportunities, however, come associated risks and significantly increased legal compliance obligations that may be imposed by various bodies. That includes domestic regulations, as well as foreign civil and criminal laws with extraterritorial reach. A failure to adhere to those laws can have dire consequences, including substantial monetary fines and penalties, severe damage to a company?s reputation, and even jail time for individual company employees.

Coal is a low-cost and high-calorific-value fuel. The coal mining industry worldwide has been suffering from severe accidents due to coal dust explosion hazards since its inception. Statistically, it was observed that 12,489 fatalities had occurred in 104 reported mining accidents from coal dust explosions during 1900–2020. There are numerous methods for detection, prevention, and control of coal dust explosions in mines. The underground mining environment is unpredictable and has an array of variables. These undulating factors make it difficult to prevent or control the coal dust explosion hazard. However, coal mining is done aggressively throughout the world, especially in developing countries as coal is a major source of thermal energy used in power plants contributing to about 38% (IEA, (2019), World Energy Outlook, IEA, Paris https:// www. iea. org/ repor ts/ world- energy- outlo ok- 2019.) of world electricity. Worldwide, coal dust explosibility studies are carried out in experimental mines, laboratories, and simulations. The complexity, lack of proper infrastructure, and unavailability of laboratory equipment sometimes make it difficult to study coal dust explosibility. The authors have discussed in detail and proposed that the CFD modelling can be a viable option for studying and evaluating coal dust explosibility.

The inquiry into the explosion at the Moura No. 2 Mine in August 1994 recommended -?Emergency procedures should be exercised at each mine on a systematic basis, the minimum requirement being on an annual basis for each mine.? (Windridge et al. 1996). In December 1996 the ?Approved Standard for the Conduct of Emergency Procedures Exercises? was published and has been subsequently revised (Queensland Department of Mines and Energy Safety and Health Division 1999). This document provided guidelines for conducting mine site emergency exercises as well as the requirement for a test of state-wide emergency response by holding a Level 1 Mine Emergency Exercise at one mine on an annual basis. From 1998 to date (January 2008) ten Level 1 Mine Emergency Exercises have been held in Queensland, Australia. This paper discusses each of the exercises conducted to date as well as the logistics, scenario preparation, planning and organising required to conduct emergency exercises at this level.

The Cannon mine, located in north-central Washington is mining gold hosted in silicified Eocene-age arkosic sediments arrayed along a regional strike-slip fault system. Branches of the Eagle Creek fault have broken the Chumstick Formation into blocks and wedges, and have caused intense deformation of stratigraphy in the mine. Mineralization at the Cannon mine (B-Reef) and O-Reef (L-O mine) is a bulk silicification with high grade cross-cutting veins containing principally electrum, silver sulfosalts and pyrite in a gangue of quartz, adularia and calcite. Orebodies have very irregular shapes, but tend to follow stratigraphy and high-angle pre-mineral fault breccias and splays developed adjacent to the major faults. Both B-Reef and O-Reef occur at significant bends in the regional trend of major fault strands. Mean gold grades decrease upward from near sea level to the 300 m elevation at the Cannon mine. A new discovery, the A-Reef is hosted by a moderately dipping structure which is at a low angle to bedding. Fluid inclusion studies of B-Reef ore zones indicate dilute ore-bearing fluids boiled at temperatures between 185 and 2850 C at a depth of 1 km. Many ore zones are bounded by sheared mudstone and claystone and a much broader halo of argillic alteration comprising illite, smectite and sericite. Trace and major element analysis by ICP-ES for 33 elements, LECO for S, Hg by CVAA and gold by AA-FA shows dispersion patterns hundreds of meters outward from the known orebodies in the Cannon mine. Geometric mean comparisons, hierarchical R-mode cluster analysis and single element spatial plots show that Hg, As, Sb, S and K/Al compose a suite of elements which are significantly dispersed away from, and increase toward mineralization. Ba, Ca, Na, Mn, V and Zr decrease toward mineralization. The suite is more selective than gold with respect to known mineralization within the exploration area.

A combined heavy medium-flotation process which incorporates the advantages of two widely employed cleaning methods, namely, heavy medium separation and flotation was used to achieve improved separation of coal from ash at fine sizes and to recover the heavy medium as a substantially recyclable product. The investigation was carried out in two successive phases. In the first phase, tests were performed to deter-mine the effect of different variables such as the medium density, flotation time, magnetite type, etc. on the efficiency of the process using in-plant samples from Homer City Coal Preparation Plant. In the second phase, the optimum conditions determined in the first phase were employed to determine the applicability of the process to a few Central Pennsylvania coals. It was observed that the process was very effective in recovering the magnetite. In most of the cases investigated, the magnetite was separated from the non-magnetic material at approximate-1 to 99 % recovery with a grade ranging from 95 to 99 %. The grade of magnetite decreased with increase in ash content of coal and with decrease in size of magnetite.

Copper, nickel, zinc and other ?penalty? metals are found with gold together in nature, and have a similar chemical affinity for cyanide used in leaching operations4. As a result, solutions that come from the heap leach pads contain a significant concentration of penalty metals along with the desired gold. In solution, gold and cyanide form the complex Au(CN)2- that is readily adsorbed onto activated carbon. Penalty metals as individual metal ions also load onto activated carbon and, depending on the concentration of cyanide and the pH of the solution, can form various cyanide complexes. Some of these complexes can also load onto carbon while some are significantly inhibited from loading. Copper, for example, can form the dicyanide complex Cu(CN)2-, the tricyanide complex Cu(CN)32-, and the tetracyanide complex Cu(CN)43-. At a low pH and a low concentration of cyanide, the dicyanide complex predominates. At a higher pH and a higher concentration of cyanide, the tetracyanide complex predominates. Without excess cyanide, however, individual copper ions can remain present. Activated carbon is used in gold extraction because it is highly selective for gold and less so for other metals, such as copper3. However, copper has the ability to adsorb (?load?) onto activated carbon and block the adsorption of gold when it is in the dicyanide form and in a high enough concentration. When copper is in the tetracyanide form, copper loading is significantly inhibited, allowing for the maximum gold recovery. In order to ensure the tetracyanide complex is formed, a combination of both available cyanide and elevated pH must be present. In the South Area of Newmont Mining Corporation?s Gold Quarry mine in Carlin, Nevada, copper and nickel loading becomes a problem when certain acid generating zones of the heap are leached. Copper, nickel, zinc and other penalty metals become leachable and the lower pH uses up more of the cyanide and creates carbon loading conditions for the metals. This decreases the carbon?s ability to extract the gold from solution, decreasing the recovery and increasing the concentration of gold in the barren solution that leaves the carbon columns. In this study, operational data from March through to May of 2007 is presented to show how Newmont developed a quick fix to lower pH and elevated metal concentrations that were causing low gold loadings on activated carbon at their South Area Leach (SAL) heap leach operations. Laboratory tested were also conducted to examine the chemical kinetics of metal loading and the individual effects of increased cyanide concentrations. THEORY Copper I ions form four different complexes with cyanide in solution: the monocyanide species CuCN, the dicyanide species Cu(CN)2-, the tricyanide species Cu(CN)32-, and the tetracyanide species Cu(CN)43-. The species are formed from the following reactions: [Cu)(?+-+ K1 (1) Cu ß2 (2) --+?+23)(3CNCuCNCu ß3 (3) --+?+34)(4CNCuCNCu ß4 (4) ] where K1 equals 1019.50, ß2 equals 1024.03, ß3 equals 1028.65, and ß4 equals 1030.35. Along with these complexing reactions, hydrogen cyanide and water also dissociate in solution, as per the following reactions: [H?+-+ KH (5) OHOHH2?+-+ KW (6)] where KH has a value of 109.24 and KW has a 1014 value2. These six chemical equations compete with each other, with domination of one over the others dependent on the CN- and H+ concentrations. Each complex also has different properties when it comes to its loading behavior on activated carbon. The dicyanide copper complex and the monocyanide copper complex have an affinity for adsorption onto activated carbon that is greater than the affinity of gold cyanide for adsorption. They also have a lower solubility in water, which enhances adsorption. The tricyanide copper complex and the tetracyanide copper complex are water soluble and have an affinity for loading adsorption on activated carbon that is less than the affinity of gold cyanide for loading adsorption1. There are three prime reasons for this phenomenon. First, the extra cyanides mask the metal ion more, which blocks the main adsorption characteristic of the complex. Second, the complexes are also larger, making it harder to physically fit into the active sites on the carbon. This helps make the latter two complexes kinetically inhibited from adsorption, freeing carbon active site to load with gold cyanide complexes. Third, it is also important to consider the expressions of the mass and charge balance. These balances describe all the overall concentration of copper and cyanide in solution, as well as marking overall charges of the ions in solution4. This is important because significantly changing the charge from positive/neutral to more negative is another reason for activated carbon to reject adsorbing the higher cyanide complexes. The speciation of copper and other penalty metal cyanide complexes in solution is dependent on the pH. At lower pH values, increased hydrogen ions (H+) can out-compete metals for cyanide ions. Lower free cyanide in the system leads to the lower cyanide species of copper cyanide predominating, with a noticeable concentration of the free metal, monocyanide and dicyanide species of copper cyanide. At higher pH values, hydrogen ions are significantly reduced, reducing the kinetics of HCN formation. More free cyanide remains in the system, allowing for more complexing. With this higher amount of cyanide in the system, the tetracyanide species of copper cyanide predominates, also with a noticeable concentration of the tricyanide species of copper cyanide. "Una de las enfermedades más extendidas en la industria minera es la pérdida de audición inducida por el ruido. La exposición de los mineros a niveles de ruido superiores a los niveles de exposición permisibles resulta en la pérdida de audición de aproximadamente el 80% de los mineros del carbón a la edad de jubilarse. En este contexto, el Instituto Nacional para la Seguridad y Salud Ocupacional (NIOSH, por sus siglas en inglés) está realizando investigaciones para desarrollar controles de ruido aplicados a los sistemas de minado de tajeos largos. Este método de minado es usado para extraer la mitad de la producción nacional de carbón subterránea. A partir de las mediciones en campo, se determinó en investigaciones anteriores que los componentes dominantes que generan sonido en el cizallador de un sistema de tajeos largos son los dos tambores de corte utilizados para extraer el carbón. Debido a las dimensiones y complejidad de los sistemas de minado de tajeos largos, el proyecto NIOSH desarrolló un modelo de elementos finitos validado del tambor de corte para utilizarlo en la predicción del sonido generado por este debido a las fuerzas de excitación experimentadas en las operaciones subterráneas. Este mismo modelo se utilizará para desarrollar controles de ingeniería para el ruido del tambor. Las fuerzas de excitación surgen de la interacción de la broca de corte y el carbón, y se transmiten al tambor de corte a través de los sujetadores de brocas. Debido a las condiciones adversas en el frente y la falta de instrumentación aprobada para uso subterráneo, las fuerzas operativas de corte de carbón no han sido evaluadas anteriormente. Para este fin, NIOSH, en colaboración con la Universidad Tecnológica de Michigan, desarrolló una broca instrumentada autónoma con seguridad intrínseca para medir estas fuerzas. Este artículo describe el desarrollo de la broca instrumentada y la medición de las fuerzas operativas de corte de carbón en tres minas. This paper examines the effect of bucket geometry (cutting-blade profile, floor profile and blade thickness), speed, motor power output and muckpile particle sizes on bucket penetration and draft for rubber tire loaders. The work uses a 1:16 scale model of a load-haul-dump (LHD) in full-factorial experiments to examine the effect of the variables on penetration and maximum draft. The results show that speed and motor output are positively correlated with penetration and draft, and muckpile particle size is positively correlated with penetration and negatively correlated with draft (p < 0.0014).

The Leadville District has been a prominent metal producer since its discovery in 1860. Veins and replacement bodies both have contributed to district production. The latter have been the major metal sources and are hosted within the Paleozoic Leadville, Dyer, and Manitou Dolomites. Igneous bodies representing eight separate events cut the sedimentary section. The main intrusive complex within the district occurs in the Breece Hill area and was the thermal center about which the vein and replacement ores exhibit mineralogical zoning. Precious metal-pyrite-quartz veins (quartz Th= 422 to 469°C; salinity < 4.2 wt. percent eNaCI) occur within or peripheral to the Breece Hill Intrusive Complex, whereas base metal veins and replacement bodies extend from the complex margins outward as much as 2 mi. Pre-ore and post-ore igneous bodies occur, but Fragmental Porphyry dikes immediately post-date the ore event. The Fragmental Porphyry grades downward from a heterolithic breccia with rock-flour matrix to one with a dark, glassy, sulfide- and phenocryst-bearing matrix, commonly with quartz-feldspar porphyry selvages on the dike. Two types of replacement bodies are recognized in the district: 1) the Leadville-type (LTM), massive sulfide (> 60% sulfides) bodies with recoverable Zn, Pb, Ag, and Au, and 2) the Sherman-type (STM), sulfide bodies (low total sulfide) with barite, galena, sphalerite, argentian tetra.hedrite, and minor pyrite. The latter type occurs only within the Leadville Dolomite and is found throughout the Mosquito Range and extending into the Alma District. The Leadville-type replacement bodies are zoned with a pyritic margin and base metal core. Wallrock alteration and trace Pb-Zn dispersion are strongly developed in igneous wallrocks but are weakly developed in carbonate wallrocks. Cu:Zn, Ag:Zn, and Au:Fe ratios increase outward from the center to the margins of LTM. Some of the sulfide bodies are localized on earlier-formed magnetite skarns. Pyrrhotite, pyrite, and marcasite are the earliest formed sulfide phases while chalcopyrite, marmatite, and galena developed later. Tetrahedrite and electrum occur in vugs and fine veinlets cutting the sulfides. Late-stage barite, dolomite, and fluorite occur as minor phases. Pressure-corrected Th for quartz (375-410°C), sphalerite (374-387°C), barite (320-360°C), and dolomite (310-314°C) fluid inclusions with salinities < 5.2 wt. percent eNaCI characterize the fluid responsible for the formation of the Leadville-type orebodies. These values clearly demonstrate the high temperature and low salinity of the ore fluids. Sulfur isotope analyses for galena and barite from LTM are - 1.9 to + 0.9%o and 7.8%o, respectively. Proximity to feeder veins and favorable dolomite hosts are the principal controls on ore localization. The Sherman-type bodies are not internally zoned but commonly have host rock silicification near the orebody margin or in the footwall rocks adjacent to fluid flowpaths along faults. Early quartz, pyrite, dolomite, and white barite precede base metal-silver minerals which are followed by late quartz and golden barite. It is not clear whether the early quartz and the late quartz and barite are part of the STM-forming process. Fluid inclusion analyses yield trapping temperatures as follows: early quartz, 316-341 °C; barite, 264-347°C; low-iron sphalerite, 215-265°C; and late quartz, 260-278°C. All inclusion fluids have salinities < 8.1 wt. percent eNaCI. Sulfur isotope values for barite and galena from STM range from 13.2 to 24.00/00 (avg: 18.4%o) and -6.8 to -3.8%o (avg: -5.5o/00), respectively. A hydrothermal fluid d34SSS of about 15%o is needed in order for galena and barite in equilibrium to exhibit the observed sulfur isotope compositions. Equilibrium sulfur isotope fractionation between barite and galena indicates a 300°C temperature of deposition. Two separate hydrothermal events appear to have taken place to form the distinctive Leadville-type orebodies and those of the Sherman-type assemblage. The STM is known to be older than the LTM. The latter is likely mid-Tertiary in age, post-dating emplacement of the Johnson Gulch Porphyry. LTM is clearly related to meteoric leaching of sulfur and lead (and other metals) from the upper portions of the Breece Hill Stock. Fluids were transmitted along faults, bedding planes, and contacts, and cooled away from the intrusive complex. Early ore fluids were weakly acidic and developed argillic assemblages in the igneous rocks adjacent to the fluid conduits. Reaction/replacement of carbonate rocks occurred where fluids encountered dolomite, but rapid neutralization prevented any wide-spread alteration beyond the ore-carbonate host contact. Pressures based on sphalerite geobarometry and stratigraphic reconstruction were 1.0-1.2 Kb. The high temperatures of vein and replacement ore fluids indicate that chloride complexing was more effective in metal transport than bisulfide complexes. Cooling, dilution of ore fluids, and reaction with carbonate rocks were the major factors in LTM ore deposition. STM formed over wide expanses of the Leadville Dolomite terrain adjacent to (and possibly capping) the Sawatch uplift. Sedimentary sulfur was derived from Pennsylvanian evaporite-bearing sequences adjacent to the uplift. Ore leads are strongly radiogenic (J-type) and are compatible with a crustal-leaching model. Temperatures of ore formation are higher, and ore-fluid salinities are lower than Mississippi Valley-type ore fluids. Superimposed upon dark-gray, diagenetic Leadville Dolomite are several stages of hydrothermal dolomite regionally distributed astride intrusive centers of the Colorado Mineral Belt. The presence of these later dolomites argues for dolomitization and later ore deposition in response to an abnormal thermal gradient caused by emplacement of Laramide batholiths and their generation of convective flow of meteoric fluids.

The design requirements for mine ventilation seals have undergone a radical transformation in recent years, and these revisions have greatly increased the cost of the seal designs and their construction. For example, in the past two years, new federal regulations have increased the minimum design requirement to withstand explosion pressures from 138 kPa (20 psig) to 345 kPa (50 psig) or 827 kPa (120 psig), depending on whether the sealed mine volume is monitored continuously or not. Moreover, there is still a possibility that under certain conditions (such as detonations), even higher pressure requirements may be necessary. The ability of a monolithic, stand-alone mine seal to reliably withstand the full range of possible explosion pressures is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive. In an effort to develop a practical alternative, the West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health Safety and Training (WVOMHST) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have collaborated in a research effort to develop a practical, economic and safe mine sealing technique that can enable mine seals to meet the full range of new explosion pressure design requirements. The basic idea is to use a barrier of common mine gob and rubble, in combination with a conventional mine seal, so that the pressure resulting from a gas explosion is reflected, absorbed and attenuated, and the pressure on the ventilation seal is reduced. This paper discusses some concepts and preliminary test results for a “passive mine blast attenuator” (PMBA) that can provide a useful alternative to increasingly larger and stronger stand-alone mine seals. Numerical models and full-scale experiments conducted at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory Experimental Mine (LLEM) show that the use of a PMBA can signficantly reduce the blast pressure and impulse on conventional ventilation seals.

Competition for coal producers and their primary customers has constantly increased during recent years. The effects of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 on the electric utility industry, coupled with the normal complexities of coal production, quality control, transportation and contracting techniques have spurred both buyers and sellers to increase their level of sophistication. This paper will review the basic aspects of the U.S. coal business and explore the commercial approaches which have proven to be most successful.

Physical and chemical characterization and solid/liquid separation of turbid waters from a river affected by an iron tailing rupture disaster (Gualaxo do Norte River, Brazil) were studied at bench scale. Parameters such as turbidity, pH, surface tension, electrical conductivity, total suspended solids (TSS), particle size distribution (micro- and nanoparticles), and zeta potential were analyzed from samples collected at three different river depths. The results in all samples showed the presence of micro- and nanoparticles, ranging in diameters from 100 nm to 200 μm. Best results for flocculation and settling were obtained at pH 7.5, through an innovative combination of eco-friendly reagents: (i) ferric hydroxide precipitates (10 mg L−1 Fe3+) to sweep (enmesh) the dispersed solids and (ii) gelatinized starch (5 mg L−1 ) to form large flocs. The results showed removals between 90 and 100% of total suspended solids (micro- and nanoparticles), resulting in clear water with residual turbidity < 7 NTU. It is believed that this innovative alternative has a high potential for flocculating and treating the turbid water at Gualaxo do Norte River, assisting the water treatment stations.

The depletion of good-quality phosphate resources, coupled by a need to supply acceptable products at a rapid rate, while meeting the specifications of fertilizer chemical plants, is of significant concern to the phosphate industry, particularly the production of concentrates with tolerable dolomite content. Tremendous efforts have been made in the past to develop an efficient and economical process that can effectively reject dolomite. However, dolomite removal continues to plague the phosphate industry due to several process-specific challenges being encountered with various beneficiation technologies. In this regard, detailed characterization of phosphate reserves is crucial to understand textural limitations and help design appropriate strategies to achieve quality products. In this paper, the development of procedures to establish dolomite rejection/francolite recovery curves for gravity preconcentration of pebble phosphate from Central Florida is described using high-speed X-ray computed tomography (HSXCT). The developed procedure is illustrated with the analysis of high MgO pebble phosphate samples (10.39 mm × 1 mm) received from South Pasture and Four Corners locations operated by the Mosaic company. The rejection/recovery curves were calculated for each sample for five different particle size classes to observe the trend in rejection/recovery with variation in particle size. In order to evaluate the reliability of the HSXCT data, analysis using the high-resolution X-ray computed tomography (HRXCT) technique was performed on one particular sample (FC-3-1). Finally, to assess the separation efficiency, the HSXCT and HRXCT rejection/recovery curves obtained were compared to experimental gravity preconcentration results reported in the literature. In this way, liberation limitations for gravity preconcentration in the processing of pebble phosphate have been established based on X-ray computed tomography analysis.
