X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) is a nondestructive imaging technique, and its efficiency is widely recognized. In the present paper, X-ray CT is successfully applied for the visualization of water permeation process in rock. A new experimental technique using a tracer, which mainly consists of Potassium Iodide (KI), is proposed, together with the analysis method of the velocity field. The permeation process and the velocity field in rock are concretely visualized and analyzed by considering the conservation of mass of the tracers. La tomographie calculée aux rayons X est une technique de la prise d'images non-destructive et son efficacité est largement reconnue. Dans le présent exposé, la tomographie calculée aux rayons X Radio est appliquée avec succès à la visualisation du procédé de perméation de l'eau dans la roche. Une nouvelle technique expérimentale, se servant d'un identificateur principalement constitué d'iodure de potassium (KI), est proposée avec la méthode de l'analyse du champ des vitesse. Le procédé de perméation et le champ des vitesse dans la roche sont visualisés concrètement et analysés en considérant la conservation de masse des identificateurs. Röntgen-Computer-Tomografie (CT) ist eine nicht-destruktive Bildverarbeitungstechnik, deren Effizienz weit anerkannt ist. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird Röntgen-CT erfolgreich für die visuelle Darstellung des Wasser-Durchdringungsvorgangs im Fels eingesetzt. Eine neue experimentelle Technit mit einem Tracer, der hauptsächlich aus Kaliumiodid (KI) besteht, wird vorgeschlagen, zusammen mit der Analysemethode des Geschwindigkeitsfelds. Der Durchdringungsprozess und das Geschwindigkeitsfeld im Fels werden konkret visualisiert und analysiert, wobei die Bewahrung der Masse des Tracers berücksichtigt wird.

This paper presents a novel holistic healthy human framework for C-suite executives and senior leaders in the minerals industry. The value-add of the framework centres around the integration of inner holistic health and interpersonal holistic health to support and enhance environment, social, and governance transformation, with a focus on the social enterprise. The framework unpacks key components of holistic health and their interlinkages to environment, social, governance, and stakeholder engagement. Insights were gleaned from interviews with 10 C-suite executives, each with over twenty years of experience in mining or business leadership. By applying the holistic healthy human framework, industry leaders can strengthen the social licence to operate and positively transform the industry's public image. Broader application to other sectors is underway.

This paper reports the results of a study to determine the effect of process control agent (PCA) on the characteristics of Ti-Mg powders during milling. It has been shown that a 2% increase in PCA content leads to up to a 40% increase in yield of the milled powder but reduces the kinetics of the mechanical alloying process. The introduction of 4% PCA decreases the mean powder particle size by up to 30%, whereas 6% PCA increases the mean particle size by up to 230%. The characteristics of the milled powders will be discussed in relation to the role of PCA in the milling process. Keywords Titanium?magnesium, mechanical alloying, PCA.

Experimental results are presented that test the hypothesis that the descaling behaviour of stainless steel slabs following reheating is controlled by interfacial roughening at the scale-steel interface. In this investigation, two stainless steels were considered: type 304 (austenitic, with 18% Cr and 8% Ni) and type 412 (ferritic/martensitic, with 11.6% Cr). It was found that the entanglement that arises at the scale-steel interface was in fact effective in maintaining scale-steel adhesion, under the mechanical descaling conditions used. In the case of type 304, descaling proceeded by fracture along chromite layers, which formed (by internal oxidation) on the austenite grain boundaries; for this steel, the extent of descaling depends most strongly on austenite grain structure, and not primarily on the conditions in the reheating furnace. In contrast, type 412 samples descaled only at the edge of the entangled zone, and showed a greater sensitivity to the reheating conditions; specifically, higher free oxygen in the reheating gas and longer reheating times were found to increase the residual scale thickness. The expected curtailment of activities within the gold-mining industry by the closure of the more marginal mines, and the shortening of the life of the industry as a whole as a result of rising costs and/or an uncertain gold price, are factors that are bound to harm the South African economy in a number of ways. The industry has no option but to regard the gold price, which is determined on the world market, as a given quantity. The remaining ore reserves al tend to be of a lower grade and/or to be found at greater depth. Therefore tighter control of working costs would seem to be almost the only option open to the industry. Working costs can be divided into two broad categories: costs emanating from the environmental characteristics of the orebody, and costs emanating from the general inflationary environment in which the industry has to purchase its inputs. Working costs stemming from the physical environment also fall into two categories: those relating to the grade of the orebody, and those resulting from working at increasing depth and temperature, together with the need to pump increasing quantities of water. The industry is both capital- and labour-intensive in absolute terms, since it requires large inputs of labour as well as of capital. It is limited in its scope to adjust its production function by becoming more labour- or more capital intensive, and is dependent on a large labour force, which cannot easily be replaced by capital inputs. On the other hand, large amounts of capital are required for investment in shafts, development, machinery, and equipment. Since the early seventies, the working costs of the South African gold-mining industry have increased at an annual rate that was significantly higher than the general rate of inflation. This rapid rise in working costs has caused some mines to find themselves in a difficult profit position. At times, the gold-mining industry has even been compelled to restructure its cost/revenue relationship rather fundamentally by revising the grade of ore worked sharply upwards or downwards, as the case may be. The rise in the gold price since 1972 has made it possible for the industry to introduce significant changes in its Black wage policy. The main aim was to increase the permanency of the Black labour force and to encourage local Black workers to join the industry. At the same time, significant increases were also experienced in the cost of machinery and stores, as well as of capital, mainly as a result of inflation. In the study on which this paper is based, the author attempted to measure the influence of environmental factors on working costs, using the physical consumption of electricity as a criterion for measurement. He found that the usefulness of this criterion in relation to factors such as depth, temperature, and water quantities pumped was invariably more than neutralized by the effects of greater productivity and economies of scale. The effects of these environmental factors on the working costs of the industry could therefore not be determined to any degree of accuracy. It seems that good progress is being made with the development of capital-intensive forms of technology aimed at coping with rapidly rising working costs and other effects of increasing depth. Techniques are also being developed to improve rock-cutting procedures and to eliminate the use of explosives in order to introduce a continuous mining process. On the whole, the gold-mining industry seems to be more sensitive to general inflationary pressures than to the cost effects that are associated with depth, temperature, and water quantities pumped. Greater control is possible over physical environmental factors such as the grade of ore mined, temperature, rate and nature of development of a mine, and adaptation of the daily working cycle to a continuous mining process. Wolfe and others hold the view that the industry will lose control over labour costs as a result of the 'sharp increase in wages and the growth of Black trade unions. However, the use of more capital-intensive technology will allow the industry to reduce its labour force, and a smaller, better-trained, and more permanent labour force will enable the industry to cope with the increasingly difficult physical environment and higher wages.

Rock stress measurement is cast in the more general context of the determination of boundary conditions for rock engineering. A study on the effect of elastic anisotropy on underground excavations reveals that this effect is actually controlled by the imposed boundary conditions. Applications to tunneling and to the Underground Research Laboratory (URL), Canada, exemplify a procedure for boundary condition estimation formerly developed by the authors. The procedure displayed fast convergence despite the complex geometry, and the high degree of non-linearity of the models. In the URL application, the 3-D model was able to completely reproduce the complex measured stress pattern, and the 90° rotation of the principal in situ stresses with depth. In order to reliably estimate the boundary conditions reproducing the current in situ state of stress, response measurements of the rock mass to current disturbances are necessary as input data. La mesure des contraintes in situ tombe dans le domaine général de la détermination des conditions aux limites pour les problèmes de mécanique des roches. Une étude sur le rôle de l’anisotropie élastique sur les excavations souterraines montre que ce rôle est contrôlé par les conditions aux limites qui sont imposées. L’application aux tunnels et au Laboratoire Souterrain de Recherche (URL) au Canada, nous permet de présenter une méthode de détermination des conditions aux limites. La méthode converge rapidement bien que le géométrie soit complexe et que le problème soit non-linéaire. Pour le URL, le modèle 3D est capable de reproduire la distribution des contraintes qui ont été mesurées ainsi que la rotation de 90 degrés des contraintes in situ avec la profondeur. Afin de déterminer avec précision les conditions aux limites responsables pour la distribution actuelle des contraintes, la réponse du massif rocheux doit être connue et mesurée. In der Felsentechnik sind die Spannungsmessungen in Gestein an die Bestimmung der Randbedingungen gebunden. Eine Studie legt dar, dass der Effekt elastischer Anisotropie in unterirdischen Aushoehlungen von den Randbedingungen kontrolliert ist. Eine von den Authoren entwickelte Methode zur Bestimmung der Randbedingungen wird an Beispielen im Tunnelbau und im Underground Research Laboratory (URL) in Kanada illustriert. Auch bei komplexer Geometrie und einem hohen Grad an Nicht-Linearitaet zeigt diese Methode ein schnelles Konvergenzverhalten. Ein 3D-Model und dessen 90° Drehung der lokalen Hauptspannungen mit der Tiefe, kann bei einer URL Anwendung vollstaendig reproduziert werden. Um mit dieser Methode die Randbedingungen zuverlaessig abschaetzen zu koennen, werden der gegenwaertige lokale Spannungszustand sowie die Antwort des Gesteins und die resultierenden Stoerungen als Eingabedaten benoetigt.

Over several decades in Southern Africa the advance rates when sinking vertical shafts have declined significantly. The upside has been a substantial improvement in shaft bottom conditions and a commensurately improved safety performance, with an increasing number of shafts being sunk without fatalities and disabling injuries. This paper briefly reviews historical sinking rates and matches changed sinking productivity to the introduction of new sinking methods that have been adopted to eliminate/mitigate safety risks. Meeting the challenge of returning to historical advance rates whilst progressing in the quest for zero harm by utilizing three dimensional animated computer modelling is described. Making use of commercial modelling software makes it easier to evaluate different methods, sequencing, in shaft barrel ergonomics, and stage and shaft bottom layouts before procuring project plant and equipment. Benefits accrue not only in better communicating methods and configurations for detailed planning and design, but also during crew training. The traditional engineering ?as-built? drawing practice has been extended to the concept of an ?as executed? sinking model which seeks to capture operational experience and learning for future best practice. The paper concludes with some of the organizational culture challenges being overcome as this non traditional approach to shaft sinking optimization is being introduced.

The electrodes of a Submerged Arc Furnaces carry a high current and are subject to enormous stresses caused by both the electric arc itself, and the current distribution within the electrode. The external effect of the arc on the electrode is treated in a different paper at this conference, The purpose of this paper is to analyze the thermal effects of ohmic heating within the electrode at the arc attachment on the carbon based electrode, using data for Søderberg electrodes. The thermal conditions are then used to examine stress conditions in the vicinity of an arc. Two types of models of an electrode are presented in the paper. The first type is an accurate finite element model, based on both two and three dimensional elements and the second type is an one dimensional model, providing better insight into the problem. For the second type, a spherical model of thermal conditions in a semi-infinite solid has been developed. Results show that the electrode surface is heated quickly up to a maximum temperature and for a specific test case, the surface can only withstand the load for about 10 seconds. Also, the thermal stresses on the surface are very high which will increase erosion on the surface in addition to normal evaporation.

In order to systematically study the size effect on the shear strength of rock joints, this study used the computer-aided-manufacturing system to reproduce the artificial rock joints for saw-toothed joints, Barton's standard joint profiles of JRC = 4~6 and 18~20, and natural rock joint profiles. We divided, enlarged, reduced, and assembled these joint profiles to obtain joint specimens of various sizes ranging from 75 mm to 300 mm in length. The shear strengths of these joint specimens were tested under different normal stresses using a direct shear test apparatus. The surface conditions of the joints at failure were also examined. The size and geometry effects on the shear strengths of these joints of various sizes and configurations were evaluated based on the test results. Um die künstlichen Trennflächen für reguläre dreieckige Trennflächen, Bartonsche standardmäßige Querschnitte der Trennflächen von JRC = 4~6 und 18~20 und natürliche Querschnitte von Trennflächen wiederherzustellen, benutzt diese Forschungsarbeit das Computergestützte-Erstellungssystem, damit die Maßstabswirkung auf die Scherfestigkeit von Trennflächen systematisch untersucht werden kann. Die Querschnitte werden geteilt, vergrößert, verkleinert und zusammengesetzt, um Trennflächenproben in Längen variierend von 75 mm bis 300 mm zu erhalten. Die Scherfestigkeit dieser Trennflächenproben wird unter unterschiedlichen Normalspannungen mit einem Direktscherversuchsgerät getestet. Die Querschnittszustände der Trennflächen bei Versagen werden ebenfalls untersucht. Nach den Untersuchungsergebnissen werden die Maßstabs- und Geometriewirkung auf die Scherfestigkeit dieser Trennflächen verschiedener Größen und Konfigurationen ausgewertet. Pour étudier systématiquement l’effet de la dimension des fractures des roches sur leur résistance au cisaillement un système de creation de fractures artificielles à l’ordinateur a été employé. Des fractures artificielles triangulaires, profils de fractures de Barton avec JRC = 4~6 et 18~20, et profils de fractures naturelles ont été reproduits. Les profils des fractures ont été arrangés de manière à obtenir des échantillons de longueur entre 75 et 300 mm. Une boîte de cisaillement a été utilisée pour étudier la résistance des fractures au cisaillement, sous plusieurs conditions de contraintes normales. Les conditions superficielles des fractures après rupture ont été étudiées. Les résultats de ces essais, effectués sur plusieurs échantillons de dimensions et configurations variées, ont contribué à établir l’influence des dimensions et de la géométrie des fractures sur leur résistance au cisaillement.

Certain degrees of safety, economic, and financial risk are implicit in any mining operation. At Thabazimbi Mine, slope stability was one of the major sources of risk, largely due to data uncertainties. Consequently, a risk-based approach in slope design was followed. On 6 June 2015, a slope failure occurred in Thabazimbi Mine’s Kumba pit, involving approximately 65 million tonnes of rock failing into the pit and the valley below. Although the failed mass moved rapidly and resulted in a run-out distance of approximately 900 m, controls had been put in place to successfully evacuate all personnel. Risk assessment during the onset of failure supported the decision to not compromise the safety of personnel in any way, leading to unavoidable equipment loss. This contribution presents the failure as a case study in the context of a risk-based approach to slope design as well as the importance of implementing geotechnical controls to effectively manage slope instability risk. Furthermore, a comprehensive back-analysis was performed, on a fully constrained 3D model, utilising 3DEC software, to gain insights into the failure mechanism. In conclusion, lessons from the Thabazimbi slope failure are valuable as they demonstrate the importance of following a risk-based approach in slope design to effectively manage safety and financial risk in open pit mines.

Testwork was done with two different adsorbents, Dowex-Minix gold-selective resin and activated carbon, to detemine their relative performances with regard to gold recovery from clarified low-grade solution employing a fixed-bed operation. The mill discharge from the milling-in-cyanide operation at a Witwatersrand gold mine was used as feed to the adsorption columns. A small amount of gold was leached during the milling process, so that this solution simulates, to a certain extent, a low-grade solution representative of a heap-leach operation. A speciation of the feed solution was done to establish which metal complexes were present in the milling-in-cyanide solution. This information was necessary to interpret metal loadings on the resin, as base metal cyanide species and their respective charges have an effect on the final gold loading capacity of the resin. Equilibrium isotherms were established for both adsorbents to estimate the rate of adsorbent flow anticipated for this specific feed solution. Breakthrough profiles were obtained at two different superficial linear velocities for each adsorbent. Mass transfer zone heights determined from the test work and the elution/regeneration time requirements were used to size a 150 m3/h full-scale plant for both adsorbents. A counter current configuration of adsorption columns, using three columns, should be suitable to recover gold effectively and to produce an effluent with a gold concentration below 0.01 mg/l. Based on the results obtained from the breakthrough tests, a preliminary techno-economic comparison was done between the resin-in-solution and carbon-in-solution options for the recovery of gold from low-grade solutions. This study indicated that the capital expenditure for a carbon-in-solution plant would be about 33 percent higher than that of a resin-in-solution plant. The operating expenditure for a resin-in-solution plant is expected to be only 60per cent of that for a carbon-in-solution plant. Keywords: resin-in-solution, carbon-in-solution, heap leach.

Stainless steel must maintain a reasonable price against other competitive materials. Therefore, the ferrochrome price must be low enough and profitable for the producers of stainless steel. The investment and operational costs of ferrochrome production are greatly dependent on the availability of the process and the production rate. Thus the furnace size and production rate in submerged electric arc furnaces will be greatly increased in the near future. The ferrochrome production per furnace, e.g. at Outokumpu?s Tornio Works, increased from 30 000 t/a to 165 000 t/a in about 35 years. The same trend will continue globally but now much more quickly. The Outokumpu ferrochrome process at Tornio Works uses sintered chromite pellets and upgraded lumpy ore as a chromite source. Metallurgical coke is used as a reductant. Reliable smelting in a large furnace demands the correct charge composition and well-known characteristics of the charge components. The quality and electrical conductivity of cokes (normally used) has the most important role for the electrical conductivity of the smelting charge. The results of the measured electrical conductivity of different cokes and the smelting charge with many controlling factors are presented here. These measurements were performed over the years for our own purposes at the laboratory of Outokumpu Research Oy (ORC), in Pori, Finland.

The influence of different grinding methods on the shape characteristics of magnetite particles was investigated. Also, the effect of particle shape on the flotation of the magnetite, both alone and in the presence of quartz particles, was investigated. The shape characteristics of the magnetite particles were measured and calculated from images obtained by scanning electron microscopy via an image analysis system. The flotation tests were performed using a laboratory flotation cell. Results showed that in the -250+212 µm and -106+75 µm size fractions, ball mill products have a higher elongation value than rod mill products, while in the -150+125 µm size fraction, rod mill products have a higher elongation value. Particles with higher elongation values and lower roundness values have a higher flotation kinetic constant. Furthermore, the influence of magnetite particle shape on flotation is greater, and the flotation kinetic constant is higher, in the presence of quartz particles than in the flotation of magnetite alone Keywords shape, elongation value, flotation kinetics, magnetite.

The introduction of Extra Low Profile (XLP) mechanised equipment within Anglo Platinum is aligned with the overall New Mining Technologies strategy to focus on continuing modernization of our mining operations to achieve injury free sustainable production and cost effective mining technologies. The method allows for the introduction of a suite of XLP and Low Profile (LP) equipment in a narrow reef (1,2m) mining environment. For the first time it is now possible to achieve total trackless mechanisation at these stoping widths and XLP Breast mining has the potential to add more value when benchmarked with conventional mining and other mechanised methods. Various types of XLP equipment were tested at different sites within Anglo Platinum and this paper describes the XLP equipment evolution to-date. It concludes with recommendations on our future strategy regarding implementation and roll out of the XLP technology within Anglo Platinum.

Control of flotation processes is mostly managed by plant operators, who assess the performance of the plant based on their own experience and other heuristic rules. These rules tend to be subjective or ill-defined, since most of them are concerned with the structure of the flotation froth, such as colour, bubble size and shape distributions, froth mobility and froth stability. These phenomena are very difficult to quantify objectively, and inexperience on the part of the operators, human error, etc., can lead to significant inefficiencies in plant operation. In this paper the development of a fuzzy system to support the control decisions of plant operators is described, which leads to significantly smoother control action and more stable plant operation than could be obtained with crisp sets of rules or manual control strategies. "BASF Mining Solutions has developed a new-generation copper solvent extraction reagent that offers significant benefits over standard extractants currently available to the industry. As the name suggests, the new hightemperature (HT) extractant can be used at a higher operating temperature, but also exhibits significantly lower degradation rates, greater copper-toiron selectivity, and is totally nitration-proof compared with the standard extractants. Pilot-plant trials have also shown that lower aqueous-inorganic entrainment can be achieved. This paper investigates the technoeconomic benefit of using the HT extractant as an alternative to the standard extractant in a high-temperature application. The results of the technical evaluation showed that the use of the HT extractant reduces the extractant addition requirements and bleed volume from copper electrowinning; this smaller bleed requirement further reduces acid and limestone consumption, leading to a reduction in valuable metal losses. The results of the economic evaluation showed that the use of the HT extractant represents significant cost savings over that of the standard extractant. IntroductionCurrent solvent extraction (SX) reagents employed for the extraction of copper from typical pregnant leach solutions (PLS) at ambient conditions function well with minimal long-term effects on the extractant’s performance (Taute et al., 2015). This performance, however, deteriorates at elevated temperatures due to the degradation of the reagent’s hydroxyoximes. The degradation mechanism, acid-catalysed hydrolysis of the oxime, is accelerated by high temperature. This has a knock-on effect where the increase in degradation products increases the organic viscosity, leading to increased entrainment, crud formation, and ultimately to an increase in SX reagent consumption (Bender, Emmerich, and Nisbett, 2013).SX reagents also show an increase in the co-extraction of iron as the ferric concentration in the PLS increases. Co-extracted iron is transferred to electrowinning (EW) during stripping of the loaded organic and can adversely affect EW current efficiency. Iron in the EW circuit is typically managed by bleeding the electrolyte; however, this can lead to excessive consumption of EW reagents such as acid, cobalt, and mist-eliminating surfactants. The electrolyte bleed can also affect upstream consumption of reagents, such as lime, due to the high acid concentration recycled to leach."

To solve the support stability control problem for a coal face with large angles along both strike and dip (CLSD), the ’support-surrounding rock’ mechanical model has been developed, which takes into account the impact of the dip angle of the seam on the stability of the support in the strike direction. The mechanical relationships of the critical topple angle and critical slip angle of the support along the strike of the coal face with large dip angle and the support height, support resistance, friction coefficient, and other factors have been derived through the mechanical analysis of support stability in the strike direction of CLSDs in the free state, the operating state, and the special state. The research findings were applied to a fully mechanized CLSD in Xinji Coal Mine. The maximum underhand angle and overhand angle in strike are 42° and 25° respectively, and the maximum dip is 39°. It is calculated that during underhand mining and overhand mining, the critical support resistances for avoiding support toppling are 3723 kN and 1714 kN respectively, and the critical support resistances for avoiding slipping of the support are 7405 kN and 6606 kN respectively. Thus, the selection of type ZZ7600/18/38 hydraulic roof support for the coal face is justified. Measures to prevent sliding of the support and the installation of a limiting stop maintain the support runs in good condition and ensure safe and efficient mining of CLSD.
