In this study, the influences of rock mass properties on the blasting performance in open cast mines are investigated. To this end, discontinuity spacings and discontinuity orientations are measured and full scale blasts with various designs are observed in open cast mines of Aegean Lignite (ELI) and Bursa Lignite (BLI) Establishments belonging to Turkish Coal Enterprises (TKI). For each blast, blasting cost is calculated, and particle size distribution representing the fragmentation of muckpile is determined by means of Split-Desktop software using image processing. 50%(K50), 80%(K80) passing sizes and topsize values are used in the determination of blasting performance according to rock mass properties. The relationships between orientation angle, which is the acute angle between the strikes of slope face and major discontinuity, and 50%(K50) and 80%(K80) passing sizes and topsize values and also blasting cost are investigated in order to analyse the influences of major discontinuity orientation on fragmentation and blasting cost. Furthermore, the relationships between discontinuity modal spacing (or block size index) and 50%(K50) and 80%(K80) passing sizes and topsize values and also blasting cost are investigated in order to analyse the influences of discontinuity spacing on fragmentation and blasting cost. In this paper, the trends observed in these relationships are discussed and the importance of it in mining is commented. Dans ce travail, Il a été traite les influences des qualites des rocheux massif sur les performances des abattages de l’excavation a ciel ouvert. Dans ce cas, les excavations a ciel ouvert dans les Entreprises Lignite d’Aegean et de Bursa qui appartient a La Societe Charbon de la Turquie; Il a été mesuré le trou du discontinuite et l’orientation du discontinuite et aussi, Il a été observé les abattages qui sont pareilles aux critaires exactes. Pour chaque abattages, Il a été fait le control des expences et la distribution du particle au dimension du pile qui a été deja abatté, a été trouve en utilisant le Software du Split-Desktop. Pour determiner les influences des qualites des rocheux massif sur les performances des abattages, Il a été utilisé K50, K80, et le plus grand valeurs des dimensions. Aussi pour determiner l’influence sur l’orientation du discontinuite majeur de la fragmentation et les expences de l’abattage, Il a été observé les relations entre l’angle de l’orientation ( C’est l’acutage entre la direction du banquette front et la direction du discontinuite majeur ) et les plus grand valeurs des dimensions et les expences de l’abattage. Plus, pour determiner des influences du trou du discontinuite sur l’abattage et la fragmentation; Il a été observé la relation entre l’index de la dimension du block et K50, K80 et les plus grand valeurs des dimensions et aussi les expences de l’abattage. Pour conclure; on peut dire que dans cette presentation, apres la discusssion des sujets consideres ces relations, Il a été souligné l’importances de ces relations dans la domain de la Minéralogie. In dieser Studie wurden die Einflüsse von Gesteinsmasse Eigenschaften auf die Sprengleistung in Tagebau Bergwerken untersucht. Zu diesem Zweck wurden Diskontinuität Abstände und Diskontinuität Orientierungen gemessen und Sprengungen im Originalmaßstab mit verschiedenen Anordnungen in Tagebau Bergwerken der Ägäischen Braunkohle (ELI) und Bursa Braunkohle (BLI) Betrieben, die zu der Türkischen Kohlegesellschaft (TKI) zugehörig sind, beobachtet. Für jede Sprengung wurden die Sprengkosten berechnet und die Teilchengrößenverteilung zur Darstellung der Aufteilung von Haufwerk ist durch Mittel von Teilbelegungssoftware, das Bildverarbeitung verwendet, bestimmt worden. 50% (K50), 80% (K80) durchlaufende Größen und Spitzengröße Werte wurden zur Bestimmung von Sprengleistung geordnet nach Gesteinsmasse Eigenschaften benutzt. This paper presents an overview of work carried out by the CSIR Division of Mining Technology and formerly by the Chamber of Mines Research Organization (COMRO) to quantify the behaviour of the stope fracture zone near deep level goldmine stopes. The motivation for this work is first reviewed in the context of the unsatisfactory status of current mine layout design criteria. Numerical methods to represent failure processes are reviewed briefly. Specific studies of microfracture processes are described as well as physical modelling experiments that can yield insights into deformation mechanisms. Modelling of stope scale deformation mechanisms are presented and considerations relating to elastodynamic modelling of the rock mass are described. The implications of this understanding in relation to prospects for active fracture zone ?engineering? are outlined and finally, the directions of future research work are proposed.

The discrete Gaussian model is a very popular change-of-support model for estimating block grade distributions. It is designed for a stationary random function Z(x) that is regarded as the transform of a stationary random function Y(x) with Gaussian marginal. It is based on an assumption that is not fully true and thus constitutes an approximation to the exact solution. We examine the effect of this approximation on the modelling of the marginal distribution of block values of a lognormal random function. The initial discrete Gaussian model and a variant of that model are considered.

Abstract For the feasibility study of an underground waste disposal the characterization of the coupled behaviour of the host rock is required: Because of the very low permeability of these formations few experimental data are generally available. In this framework the uses of the sensitivity studies could orient the experimental efforts by highlighting the key parameters of the formation. This paper gives a first approach of the sensitivity studies performed with probabilistic methods in the geomechanical field. A one dimensional model which characterizes the thermohydromechanical response of an argillaceous rock to the excavation of a waste canister site and its setting up, is considered. Zusammenfassun Die Machbarkeitsstudie eines tiefliegenden Endlagers für radioaktive Abfälle beinhaltet die Untersuchung des gekoppelten Verhaltens des im Lagerbereich anstehenden Gesteins. Aufgrund der sehr geringen Wasserdurchlässigkeit dieser Formationen liegen häufig nur wenige experimentelle Angaben vor. Die Verwendung von Sensibilitätsstudien kann in diesem Zusammenhang als Hilfsmittel zur Entscheidungsfindung dienen. Dabei sollen die maßgeblichen Eigenschaften der Formation festgestellt werden, anhand derer der Umfang der experimentellen Erkundung festgelegt werden kann. Dieser Artikel stellt einen ersten Ansatz zur Durchführung von Sensibilitätsstudien mittels einer mechanisch-probablistischen Kopplung im Bereich der Geomechanik sowie die Vorteile gegenüber Parameterstudien vor. Zur Abbildung des thermohydromechanischen Stoffverhaltens von tonigem Fels während der Schachterstellung und der Einlagerung der Abfälle wird ein eindimensionales Model verwendet. Résumé L'étude de faisabilité d'un centre de stockage de déchets radioactifs en profondeur passe par la caractérisation du comportement couplé de la roche hôte. Du fait de la très faible perméabilité de ces formations, souvent peu de données expérimentales sont disponibles. Dans ce cadre l'utilisation d'études de sensibilité permettrait d'orienter les efforts expérimentaux en faisant ressortir les caractéristiques primordiales de la formation. Cet article présente une première approche de la réalisation d'études de sensibilités à l'aide de couplages mécano-fiabilistes dans le domaine de la géomécanique. Un model unidimensionnel caractérisant la réponse thermohydromécanique d'une roche argileuse au creusement d'un puit de stockage et à la mise en place de conteneurs de déchets est considéré.

A shortage of technical skills in all areas of the mining industry is being experienced worldwide. This has significant consequences for design, operations, productivity and safety and, therefore, needs to be seriously addressed, both in the short and longer term. It is therefore both a strategic and a tactical issue. Importantly, however, since mining is a long-term business, the shortage of skills must be dealt with from a strategic point of view to ensure the supply of the necessary skills for future mining. This paper will deal specifically with the provision of high level technical skills, that is, university graduates in mining engineering, and the outlook for the institutions that are currently producing such graduates.

It is of great importance to prevent a leakage of hazardous substances from underground storage plants, because this certainly leads to a fatal disaster for human societies. Therefore, effective grouting system needs to be developed, which can inject cement grout into low-permeable rock masses. Authors have carried out a series of laboratory injection tests using a fracture model and field tests in low-permeable rock masses. In these tests, not only was the superiority of dynamic grouting confirmed, but also the relationship between grouting-efficiency and injection parameters was investigated. In this paper, the results of laboratory injection tests and field tests together with theoretical approaches to them are mentioned. L’empêchement de la fuite des substances dangereuses des galeries de stockage est un traitement très important pour protéger la société humaine contre la comtamination catastrophique. Par conséquent, un procédé d’injection efficace doit être mis au point, qui peut injecter du coulis de ciment dans le rocher ayant une perméabilité basse. Les auteurs ont effectué une série d'essais d'injection en laboratoire en utilisant un modèle de rupture et d'essais sur le terrain dans le rocher ayant une perméabilité basse. Dans ces essais, était non seulement la supériorité du l’injection dynamique confirmée, mais aussi le rapport entre l’efficacité de l’injection et les paramètres d'injection a été étudié. Dans cet article, les résultats des essais d'injection en laboratoire et des essais sur le terrain ainsi que les méthodes théoriques pour les essais sont mentionnés. Es ist wichtig, Durchsickerns gefährlicher Substanzen aus unterirdischen Lagerstellen zu verhindern, weil dies für die menschliche Gesellschaft unter Umständen zu verheerenden Unfällen führen kann. Daher muß ein effizientes VerfugesSystem entwickelt werden, welches erlaubt den Mörtelschlamm in wenig durchlässige Felsenmassen einzuspritzen. Die Autoren haben eine Serie von Laboreinspritzungsversuchen mit einem Bruchmodell und Feldversuche an wenig durchlässigen Felsenmassen durchgeführt. Diese Versuche zeigten nicht nur die Überlegenheit des dynamischen Verfugens, sondern wurde dabei auch das Verhältnis zwischen Verfugen und Leistungsfähigkeit sowie den Einspritzungparametern untersucht. In dieser Studie werden die Ergebnisse der Laboreinspritzungtests und die Feldversuche zusammen mit den entsprechenden theoretischen Ansätzen erläutert.

The subject of optimal planning of level and raise spacing for inclined narrow reef deposits has received intermittent attention over the years because the subject matter is inherently complex. Previous work has approached the problem as simply that of simultaneously minimizing the total excavation and haulage cost associated with the development workings. However, when level and raise spacing are altered, other factors such as productivity are negatively affected, thus requiring a delicate trade-off of contradicting planning or optimization criteria. The paper concludes that the problem is actually of the multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) type, contrary to traditional thinking that the planning problem is achieved solely by minimizing waste development.

The decisive action taken by mine managements in recent years has been the main factor in bringing about the present downward trend in mine fires. A better understanding of the fundamental factors that govern the ignition and spread of fires. obtained as a result of investigations into mine fires, has provided useful guidance to production personnel. Similar investigations into fire-fighting techniques have assisted the Rescue Training Service and mines to institute more effective fire-fighting techniques. Some of the more important findings of recent investigations in these areas are outlined.

In many mineral processing operations, the reported production figures for an accounting period may not make the best use of available data. While most of the mathematical approaches, such as check-in/check-out, mass balancing, used in effective metallurgical accounting strategies are well understood, the sources and magnitude of measurement errors generally are not. As part of the 'AMIRA P754-Metal Accounting and Reconciliation' project, a study was undertaken at the Northparkes copper/gold concentrator near Parkes, New South Wales to examine the data used in their concentrator metallurgical accounting system. This paper summarises the results of a detailed examination of the mass measurement systems around the concentrator as well as the primary sampling system used for grade estimation. The goal of this work was to develop practical techniques to quantify the error (ie both accuracy and precision) of the measured metal accounting information. With this information, statistical confidence levels for this data can then be calculated. If the errors are small, the effect of error in each piece of measured data can then be propagated to other calculated production figures such as recovery and feed grade using a statistical technique called `the propagation of error'.

Lack of visibility makes it difficult for continuous miner (CM) operators to judge the desired sump depth. The resulting inaccuracies have proven to lead to significant production losses. This problem of measuring the depth of sump has been addressed in the past and a few measurement techniques have evolved. Despite various attempts, a suitable commercial depth of sump sensor does not yet exist. A system using the Doppler effect has been patented, developed and successfully tested. The method is non-intrusive and involves a beam of microwaves being projected obliquely at the roof. The received signal is analysed with respect to the transmitted signal, yielding the desired measure of displacement. Surface tests have revealed an accuracy of a few centimetres. Underground simulation tests on a load haulage dump (LHD) machine have verified the repeatability under the harsh conditions of interest. The system is presently being installed on a CM where it is to undergo a long-term performance evaluation. This paper presents the theory behind such a system, the hardware developed, the signal processing requirements and an analysis of the test results.

ABSTRACT: In this paper, the strong interaction between the hardening shotcrete lining and the surrounding ground in NATM tunneling is investigated by means of axisymmetric analyses, accounting for the three-dimensional nature of the excavation process. The effect of the hydration of shotcrete on strength, stiffness, chemical shrinkage as well as microcracking and creep are accounted for. For the description of the mechanical behavior of the ground, a multi-surface plasticity model is employed. The performed analyses of the excavation process provide insight into the influence of each phenomenon accounted for in the material model for shotcrete on the response of the ground-shotcrete compound structure. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: In diesem Beitrag soll die Interaktion zwischen dem erhärtenden Spritzbeton und dem Boden auf der Basis axisymmetrischer Berechnungen untersucht werden. Derartige Berechnungen ermöglichen die Berücksichtigung des drei-dimensionalen Charakters des Vortriebprozesses. Die Auswirkung der Hydratation auf die Entwicklung der Festigkeit, Steifigkeit und der chemischen Schwindverzerrungen, sowie das Reißen und das Kriechen des Spritzbetons wurde berücksichtigt. Das mechanische Verhalten des Bodens wurde mittels eines Mehrflächenplastizitätsmodells simuliert. Die durchgeführten Berechnungen des Vortriebprozesses geben Einblicke in die Auswirkungen der Spritzbetoneigenschaften auf das Tragverhalten des Boden-Spritzbeton-Komposits. RÉSUMÉ: La stricte interaction entre le soutènement en béton projeté durcissant et le terrain dans un tunnel creusé avec la NATM est étudiée par des analyses axisymétriques, compte tenu de la nature tridimensionnelle des processus de creusement. Les effets de l’hydratation du béton sur la résistance, la rigidité et la contraction chimique, ainsi que sur la micro-fissuration et le fluage, sont mis en compte. Pour la description du comportement mécanique du terrain on emploie un modèle de plasticité multi-surface. Les analyses conduites mettent en évidence l’influence de chaque phénomène considéré dans le modèle constitutif du béton projeté sur la réponse de la structure composite terrain-béton projeté.

The paper proposes two numerical models ot the mechanical behaviour of chalk. First, an elasto-plastic constitutive law reproduces the different plastic mechanisms of the chalk and the influence of pore fluids by introducing the concept of suction. Secondly, a model able to reproduce time dependence behaviour. Eventually, the paper gives a simulation of an academic reservoir during depletion and waterflooding phase. Der Artikel stellt zwei numerische Modelle des mechanischen Verhaltens der Kreide vor. Das erste ist ein elasto-plastisches Modell, das verschiedene plastische Mechanismen der Kreide und den Einfluss von Porenflüssigkeit, unter dem Begriff der Suktion, reproduziert. Das zweite Modell berücksichtigt darüberhinaus das zeitabhängige Verhalten. Schliesslich zeigt die Veröffentlichung eine Simulation einer theoretischen Lagerstätte während der Entleerung und der Wasserinjektion. L'article propose deux modèles numériques du comportement mécanique de la craie. Le premier est une loi élasto-plastique qui reproduit les différents mécanismes plastiques de la craie et l'influence du fluide interstitiel par l'introduction de la notion de succion. Le second est un modèle prenant en compte les effets différés. Enfin, l'article présente une simulation d'un réservoir académique durant les phases de déplétion et d'injection d'eau.

In this paper some failure phenomena observed in the crossing of brittle rock formations at the Lötschberg base tunnel are presented. A brittle failure criteria, recently developed by Canadian researchers, is applied through finite element calculations together with a semi-empirical failure criterion, to explain these behaviours. Good agreement is found between predicted and observed failures at the tunnel walls. This study also shows some of the limitations of this approach. Dans cet article sont présentés certains phénomènes de rupture observés durant la traversée de zones de roches fragiles lors de l’excavation du tunnel du Lötschberg. Un critère de rupture développé récemment par la recherche canadienne est utilisé à travers des calculs par éléments finis. En parallèle, les résultats sont comparés avec ceux d’un critère semi-empirique. Au niveau des parements, l’ampleur des ruptures observées est assez proche des résultats de calcul. Cette étude a également permis de mettre en avant certaines limites de l’approche choisie. In diesem Artikel werden verschiedene Brucharten dargestellt, die bei der Durchfahrung von sprödem Gestein im Rahmen des Ausbaus des Lötschberg-Basistunnels beobachtet wurden. Zur Erklärung des vorliegenden Verhaltens wurden die erst kürzlich in Kanada entwickelten Theorien zur Beschreibung von Sprödbrüchen herangezogen und bei der Berechnung mittels der Finite-Elemente-Methode und eines semi-empirischen Kriteriums angewendet. Die so vorhergesagten Versagenszonen an den Tunnelwänden stimmen mit den Beobachtungen gut überein. Die Studie hat auch dazu beigetragen, die bei der Anwendung des Lösungsansatzes angetroffenen Schwierigkeiten aufzuzeigen.

It is important to know the breakage mechanism in materials since this knowledge influences the results of subsequent grinding operations. There are two distinct failure mechanisms in breakage: one is tensile micro crack generation at low stresses, which leads to macroscopic failure by disintegration, and the other is formation of shear zones under heavier dynamic impact forces, which generates more fines as seen in crush zones in blasting. Tensile fracturing simply breaks the material into fragments. It is seen as the disintegration of the specimen into two or more separate fragments. This happens under the absence of lateral stresses and the material is free to expand. On the other hand, compressive-shear breakage produces finer fragments due to shear stresses. The first mechanism is observed in laboratory tensile and bending strength tests and the second mechanism is observed both in laboratory brittleness tests and in situ blasting operations under dynamic impact forces. The friability of rocks and ores can be determined by a brittleness test. A test apparatus to determine the friability value has been designed to suit limestone strength characteristics used in cement production. The friability and stored strain energy values of barite, marble, limestone and bauxite have been determined and compared with the corresponding Bond work index (Wi) and grindability index (G) of these materials. The physico-mechanical properties of the tested materials have also been determined to investigate their effect on friability and grinding. The relationships obtained between the indices were in surprisingly good agreement, with high correlations (0.99 and 0.97). The Bond work index and grindability index can therefore be estimated from the friability value, which can be determined more rapidly than the Bond test. But for certain rock types such as andesites the relationships does not hold. Key words: comminution, tensile stress, shear forces, brittleness test, strain energy.

The predevelopment and preparation of a total infrastructure in a deep level mining environment, prior to the shaft system being commissioned has major advantages. This paper intends to indicate these advantages and outline an understanding of the disadvantages. These benefits can be classified in three basic groups: the financial and timing advantages, a knowledge of the ore body and the development of required technology to meet the design parameters. The required technology in many aspects was still to be developed prior to successful application. Stemming from the technological evolution are some secondary advantages which will be described in each of the groups. Safety and health considerations and some practicalities made some of the new technology redundant prior to the actual application. In each case the actual achievements and the anticipated benefits will be indicated to allow the reader to distinguish clearly between planned and actual achieved advantages.

Discontinuity Orientation Measurement (DOM) drilling system capable of retrieving the reference line-marked core log, which can be used for determining the relative positions and orientations of discontinuity planes along the borehole axis, has been developed. Accuracy of the borehole joints data measured from the reference-lined core and, eventually, the significance and applicability of DOM drilling system for site exploration are verified by comparing with the spatial characteristics of joints investigated by implementing borehole image-taking instruments in the same borehole. Enhancement of boring efficiency has been also confirmed by performing twin drilling operations, one with DOM drilling system and the other with a conventional drilling machine equipped with D-3 core barrel, on two neighbouring sites of 5 m apart. Ein DOM(Diskontinuitätsorientierungsmessung)-Bohrsystem, das durch Grundlinien markierte Bohrprobelog extrahieren kann und die relativen Lagen und die Orientierungen der sich im Bohrloch verbreitenden Flächen bestimmen kann, ist entwickelt worden. Die Wichtigkeit des DOM-Bohrsystems und dessen Anwendbarkeit auf die Erforschung auf dem Bohrplatz werden dadurch bewiesen, dass man die Genauigkeit der Daten der Bohrlochsspalte, die durch die die Grundlinie zeichnende Bohrprobe gemessen werden, mit dem räumlichen Eigenschaften der Spalte vergleicht, die durch die Bildaufnahme des gleichen Bohrlochs nachgeforscht werden. Un system de sondage, Discontinuity Orientation Measurement (DOM), capable de récupérer des carottes markés en une ligne de référence a été dévelopé. Il peux être utilisé pour déterminer les positions relatives et les orientations des plans de discontinuité le long de l’axe de trou de sonde. Modelling the effect of blasting-caused damage, anisotropy of rock masses and excavation sequence on deformational behaviour and stability of large-scale underground caverns is important in the design and information-oriented construction of the pumped storage power plant. A powerful three-dimensional numerical method that can be applied for that purpose is presented in this paper. Damaged range caused by blasting and mechanical properties of rock masses near to the walls of caverns are determined by using the back analysis approach in which three lines of the measurement results during the arch part excavation process were used to verified the simulations. Finally, applying the improved model and properties of rocks, the cavern stability and reinforcement effect of the preliminarily designed support system are also estimated for the safety in the bench excavation process. La création de modèles des effets relatifs aux dommages résultant des explosions, à l’anisotropie des masses rocheuses et à la séquence d’excavation quant au comportement à la déformation et à la stabilité des cavernes souterraines de grandes dimensions est une étape importante dans l’étude et la construction sur ordinateur de centrales hydrauliques à accumulation par pompage. Cet article traite d’une méthode numérique tri-dimensionnelle puissante applicable à cet effet. La gravité des dommages résultant des explosions et les propriétés mécaniques des roches à proximité des parois de la caverne sont déterminées par une analyse du fond dans laquelle les simulations sont vérifiées à l’aide de trois lignes de résultats de mesures prises durant le processus d’excavation de la partie arche. Finalement, la stabilité de la caverne et les effets du renforcement du système de support préalablement conçu sont estimés par application du modèle amélioré et des propriétés de la roche, pour application à la sécurité durant le processus d’excavation en gradins. Nachahmung der Wirkungen von durch Explosionen hervorgerufenen Schäden, Anisotropie der Gesteinsmassen und der Ausschachtungssequenz auf das Verformungsverhalten und die Stabilität großräumiger Untergrundhöhlen ist für das Design und den informationsorientierten Bau von Pumpenkraftwerken wichtig. Entsprechend der Vorgaben in dieser Arbeit kann ein leistungsfähiges, dreidimensionales numerisches Verfahren für diesen Zweck eingesetzt werden. Der durch Explosionen und die mechanischen Eigenschaften des Gesteins bedingte Schadensumfang im Bereich der Höhlenwände kann mit Hilfe eines retroversen Analyseansatzes bestimmt werden, bei dem die drei bei der Ausschachtung resultierenden Messlinien dazu genutzt wurden, die Simulationen zu bestätigen. Abschließend wurde außerdem durch Einsatz verbesserter Modelle und Gesteinseigenschaften die Auswirkungen vorläufig entworfener Unterstützungssystem auf die Höhlenstabilität und Verstärkungswirkungen hinsichtlich der Sicherheit bei Böschungsausschachtung abgeschätzt.

The Witwatersrand Basin contains by far the most gold ever found, and has hosted mining from its discovery in 1886 to the present. For many years, South Africa was the world’s largest producerof gold, nearly all of which came from the Witwatersrand. Since 2000, South Africa has fallen back several positions because of declining gold output. There are many complex and varied reasons for this; however, declining gold resources in the Witwatersrand Basin are not one of them. As far as the author knows, there are no qualified estimates in the literature of gold remaining in the Witwatersrand Basin. This paper collects mining data from several sources and then, using elementary gold accounting and error analysis, attempts to estimate the amount of gold remaining in the Witwatersrand Basin. It includes gold underground in existing and defunct mines, in evaluated ore resources, and dumps. Compiled data from 1887 to 2019 shows that 50 200 t of gold were produced by Witwatersrand mines, while it is estimated that a further 48 100 t remainunderground, both within and outside of mine leases, a further 1 600 t on the surface in tailings,and an unknown amount in rock dumps. Nearly all of this gold will remain inaccessible with current mining methods, and major technical developments in mining will be necessary before any of the gold can be categorized as a code-compliant resource or reserve. To win this prize, the mining industry will have to rethink its approach to mining, both in old mining leases and in the unexploited ground. It will also have to find effective means of preventing gold theft and informal mining, which are on the rise.

Early removal of the shaft reef is usually considered necessary on deep level South African gold mines to avoid damaging stress build-up associated with traditional shaft-protection pillars. In the case of the relatively shallow Beatrix Gold Mine it was largely motivated by early access to ore and the consequent earlier return on invested capital. A number of options were considered to protect the shaft from possible damaging stress changes and to minimise deformations in the shaft-reef area. Numerical modelling was used to evaluate the options and to quantify as accurately as possible the likely deformations to be accommodated by the shaft steelwork designs. The option chosen was a combination of strategically placed satellite pillars and yield pillars, and backfill. Following the mining of a small inner cut during the shaft sinking process, full-scale mining is progressing away from the shaft. Suitable instrumentation has been installed to monitor deformations associated with the shaft reef removal. L’option choisie fut une combinaison de piliers satellites placés à des points stratégiques avec des piliers de protection, et terre de remblayage. Pendant le fonçage de puits une petite coupure intérieure fut exploitée, et maintenant l’exploitation à grande échelle, au-delà du puits, est en cours. Les instruments nécessaires ont été installés pour surveiller les déformations associées à l’enlèvement du filon du puits. Im Fall der verhältnismäßig flachen Beatrix Goldmine war es hauptsächlich vom frühen Zugang zum Erz und dem konsequenten frühen Rückfluß des investierten Kapitals motiviert. Eine Anzahl an Optionen wurde erachtet um den Schacht vor möglichen zerstörenden Druckänderungen zu schützen und Deformationen im Riffschachtbereich zu minimieren. Um die Optionen zu bewerten und mögliche Deformationen so genau wie nur möglich quantitativ darzustellen die von den Schachtstahlkonstruktionen aufgenommen werden müssen, wurden numerische Modelle verwendet. Die gewählte Option war eine Kombination aus strategisch plazierten exzentrischen Pfeilern und Schutzpfeilern sowie Hinterfüllungen. Nach dem Vortrieb eines kleinen inneren Einbruches während des Abteufens wird der Vollvortrieb vom Schacht weg vorgenommen. Um die Deformationen, die mit der Riffschachtentfernung verbunden sind zu überwachen, müssen geeignete Instrumentenausrüstungen installiert werden.
