COMPREHENSIVE summary is presented of results of several years of research at the Bureau of Mines Mining Research Center at Denver on adapting and applying techniques of statistical analysis in mine and mineral-deposit sampling and in computing grade and tonnage of ore for a mineral deposit. In addition to elementary statistical theory the material presented in the bulletin includes: (1) Certain special statistical techniques that have been found useful in mining applications; (2) problems, implications, and limitations that may be encountered in applying these techniques in mine sampling and evaluation; and (3) numerous examples to demonstrate application of the theory and techniques.

An important phase in the Bureau of Mines investigation of electrical machines designed for operation in gassy coal mines is testing enclosures of electrical components for explosion-proof qualities. In brief, this testing consists of filling and surrounding the enclosure with an explosive atmosphere of methane and air and then igniting the atmosphere within the enclosure to determine (1) Whether the resulting explosion is confined without discharge of flame; (2) whether the enclosure walls are permanently distorted; and (3) whether excessive pressures are developed within the enclosure. Ordinarily, the pressures encountered in routine testing do not exceed 100 pounds per square inch gage. Hence, the designer of the machine does not have too much difficulty in taking corrective measures to prevent flame discharge and distortion of the enclosure. Occasionally, however, the explosion pressures greatly exceed 100 pounds. Then the goblet of the designer may not be solved so readily, From experience over the year 0, the testing personnel often can predict that certain construction will result in high. Pressures, but, only in a very general way, has it been possible to advise designers what modifications might be made to reduce the explosion pressures to normal values. For example, if high pressures were developed in a motor starter having a partition with an opening through it, some enlargement of the opening may appear to be the logical procedure, but it has not been- possible to give information concerning the exact amount the opening should be enlarged to prevent development of high pressures .

"Steel manufacturers have noticed a decided tendency on the part of many of their customers to become more exacting in their steel specifications. Under these conditions, the steel must not only meet the specifications of physical properties (tensile strength, reduction of area, elongation, impact strength, grain size, normality, etc.) and the chemical analyses, but must also pass the inspection test of ""cleanliness.""By cleanliness is commonly meant the absence of oxide and sulphide inclusions. Other foreign particles such as furnace or ladle slag, ladle and runner brick, etc., must also be absent. The determination of cleanliness at present is usually made by microscopic inspection or macroetching.The rejection of steel for lack of cleanliness is increasing, out cleanliness is one of the most difficult requirements for the manufacturer to fill. The reason for this is that every steel inspector has a different conception of a. clean steel. A material which does not pass the examination of one inspector way be regarded as entirely satisfactory by the metallurgist of an¬other company. The cause of this confusion and disagreement concerning the definition of a clean or a dirty steel is simply that as yet no standardized procedure for the determination of impurities has been proposed and generally accepted, since many variables are encountered which interfere with the development of a satisfactory method. An idea of the complexity of this situation will be obtained from the following pages.A Survey of Proposed Analytical MethodsAlthough no analytical method has been accepted, many procedures have been proposed, as may be seen in Table 1. Therein are listed 16 of the better-known processes, pith references to the work of their originators, their mechanisms of determination, and their applicabilities. Among these is included the electrolytic method developed by one of the present authors, and some comparison between this and previously proposed procedures may be obtained by a study of the table. It appears that this new method Las many advantages over the others, and this paper presents a critical Study of its value."

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Stillwater Mining Company worked cooperatively with the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology to develop a system that would collect seismic data at the Stillwater and East Boulder mines. The purpose was to obtain baseline information on the magnitude and location of mining-induced seismicity to determine if the mines needed multi-channel in-mine monitoring systems. Seismic data recorded at field sites near the mines are being telemetered via FM radio through a series of repeaters to a central recording site where the seismic signals are digitized using an Earthworm data acquisition system. The Earthworm system performs several data analysis tasks in near-real time and places raw seismic data, preliminary hypocenter locations, and magnitudes on a Website within 5 min of a seismic event. Such rapid access to seismic data allows personnel at the Stillwater Mine, Spokane Research Laboratory, and Earthquake Studies Office to evaluate seismic events quickly and respond in ways that may improve the safety of mine personnel underground. Installation of the system also broadened earthquake coverage to south-central Montana, a region previously not covered by the seismograph network.

The first section of this circular has been prepared with a view to answering inquiries frequently received by the Bureau regarding laws governing the staking of claims and regulations covering requirements for holding them and obtaining title in fee to placer ground. These laws and regulations were summarized briefly in Information Circular 6796, "Placer Mining in the Western United States." These laws, however, are administered by the General Land Office, Department of the Interior, and it has been considered advisable to combine an authoritative résumé thereof by the Commissioner of that Bureau with information on small-scale placer mining previously published by the Bureau of Mines. The second section of this circular is largely a revised reprint of Information Circular 6611, "Small-Scale Placer Mining Methods", first published in April 1932 for the purpose of answering the many daily inquiries then being received on this subject. This circular has been reprinted repeatedly, and about 30,000 copies have been distributed, most of them in response to applications therefor. At present (June 1937) requests for this publication continue to be received daily.

This paper is one of a series dealing with mining problems and summarizing the data contained in the Information Circulars on individual mines that have been prepared by the managers or superintendents and published by the Bureau of Mines. The purpose of this paper is to present the problems encountered in the development of an efficient mine organization and to show the means used by certain mining companies in promoting efficiency. There is also a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of the various systems of paying and handling labor and a description of their application at the individual mines.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the technical and economic constraints on the extraction and utilization of anthracite coal and to determine the research and development needed in order to make anthracite coal more fully utilized as a premium energy resource. In the report the contractor examines in detail the anthracite industry both past and present and evaluates market possibilities. Anthracite reserves and resources are analyzed and tabulated, and the problem of pumping and drainage from the flooded anthracite fields is covered. Current technology is considered in detail with a discussion of production techniques with potential for improvement. The contractor concludes the report with a summary of constraints on the anthracite industry and the contractor's recommendations for effecting a revitalization of that industry. An estimated production of 17 million tons annually by 1990 can be anticipated if adequate planning, research, and development to overcome present constraints are initiated in the near future.

This task report provides the process technology, preliminary design, capital and operating costs for a 25 TPD pilot plant to produce cell-grade alumina using a clay/hydrochloric acid extraction - HCI gas induced crystallization process. The report consists of six volumes: I - Process Technology and Costs; II and III - Equipment Lists, Specifications and Quotations; IV and V - General Specifications; VI - Drawings. The process was selected by the Bureau of Mines as the more promising method to produce cell-grade alumina from clay based on the results of the two previous task reports under this contract: Task I - Comparison of Six Processes (alunite, anorthosite-lime sinter, clay/sulfurous acid, clay/nitric acid, clay/hydrochloric acid evaporative and gas-induced crystallization) and Task 2 - Comparison of Two Processes (clay/nitric acid and clay/hydrochloric acid - gas induced (crystallization). The pilot plant process utilizes a unique dual crystallization process to produce aluminum-chloride-hexahydrate crystals having sufficient purity when decomposed to meet stringent alumina product specifications. The size of the 25 TPD pilot plant has been selected to permit scale-up to commercial size plants of equipment, technical and economic parameters. The capital cost estimate for the pilot plant, exclusive of fee and escalation, for a southeastern U.S. location is $52,311,000 expressed in 1979 dollars. The total time required to construct the pilot plant including engineering and procurement is 32 months. The operating cost to produce the estimated 9,000 tons of alumina required for testing in Hall cells is $40,91[0],190 expressed in 1979 dollars.

The Brunswick Mine Diesel Particulate Filter Study was one of several research projects initiated by the Diesel Emissions Evaluation Program (DEEP). The study was carried out at Noranda?s Brunswick Mine in Bathurst, New Brunswick by Noranda Technology Centre and Brunswick Mine personnel with the collaboration of Natural Resources Canada - Canada Centre for Minerals and Energy Technology (CANMET), National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Andreas Mayer of VERT, and diesel particulate filter (DPF) system suppliers. The study began in early 2000. Field evaluations continued for 20 months. The final report?authored by Sean McGinn?was submitted to DEEP in the Autumn of 2003.

WHEN the Bureau of Mines initiated the program of large-scale research and development in the field of synthetic liquid fuels authorized in the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of April 5, 1044, the Coal Preparation Section was assigned the task of obtaining data on the preparation characteristics of the coal in large reserves that might be adaptable to use in this new industry. It is natural that, as the rapidly developing general research program brought about new concepts of raw-material quality, preferred geographical location, and the like, the orientation of coal-preparation investigations should have undergone some change. The first major assignment was the sampling and testing of a series of typical American coals deemed to he suitable for hydrogenation based on early research work conducted by the Bureau of Mines. This first series of tests has been completed and is reported in this paper.

As a part of its overall program of coal carbonization, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals that may be used for metallurgical purposes. The objectives of this study were given in detail in a previous report.2/ The inherent suitability of coal for metallurgical use depends primarily on (1) chemical composition, (2) preparation characteristics, and (3) carbonization behavior. The first two factors, as well as the available reserves, are considered in selecting coals for carbonization tests. Direct current electrical systems are used in most coal mines primarily to power the main haulage trains and secondarily to feed other equipment and passageway lighting. Electrical power is supplied from rotary machines or static rectifier equipment and is distributed through the mine by open trolley wires and feeder cables. The rails of the haulageway are used as a current return path. This exposed power distribution system is very vulnerable to conditions which lead to undesired leakage currents and short circuits and, consequently, the possibility of fires or other hazards to personnel. Present techniques and equipment have been utilized in so far as practical to improve the safety of the dc electrical system; however, there still appears a need for further improvement. Because of this need, this program was sponsored by the Bureau of Mines to investigate two specific technical areas related to improvement of dc electrical system safety. One area included the determination of the characteristics of mine electrical systems and their protection requirements and the verification of the adequacy of available protective devices for mine service. Despite the widespread application of industrial protective equipment in mines, there was little detailed technical information available related specifically to the performance of this equipment in service. Our task was not only to develop useful information regarding mine system protection, but also to define and verify the adequacy of the protective devices available. "A new apparatus has been devised for quickly and precisely analyzing natural gas for its helium content. The following outstanding advantages make it far superior to any equipment now available for the purpose.3/4/5/6/1. It enables more rapid determinations to be made.2. It has far greater sensitivity than previous apparatus. 3. It is portable.Fifty or more samples may be analyzed in an 8-hour day with the new apparatus and procedure. A maximum of about 10 samples per day could be analyzed with previous apparatus. In the apparatus described, the volume of pure helium obtained from a sample is determined by measuring the pressures created by that pure helium when it is expanded into a constant calibrated volume. In older methods the pure helium separated from a sample is pumped into a burette and measured at atmospheric pressure. The new apparatus and Procedure used with it reduce the average time for an analysis from about 40 minutes to less than 10 minutes,Samples containing a few thousandths of a percent helium may be analyzed as readily as samples containing 1 percent or more, This was not possible with former apparatus. Duplicate samples containing a few thousandths of a percent helium have been analyzed, results checking to one ten-thousandth of a percent. Attempts to measure a corresponding volume of helium in a burette at atmospheric pressure become futile. The ability to determine very small quantities of helium has become of great importance recently in gas- and oil-field engineering studies such Os the utilization of helium as a tracer gas in following the movement of gases through underground structures.A complete apparatus was recently carried more than a thousand miles in a passenger automobile. It arrived without breakage, was .set up and ready to make an analysis in a few hours. .Former apparatus was not portable. The portability of the present apparatus permits taking the apparatus to the field for more efficient prosecution of field engineering problems. The only services required in the field are electricity, tap water, and a source of liquid air or liquid nitrogen.The principle involved is based upon the fact that large volumes of all the constituents usually found in natural gas, except helium, are adsorbed quantitatively on cocoanut charcoal that has been cooled to the temperatures of liquid air. A volume of sample is measured and transferred to a tube of cocoanut charcoal maintained at the temperature of liquid air. After adsorption of all the constituents other than helium, the charcoal tube is connected to a sensitive pressure-measuring device, and the Percentage helium originally in the sample is calculated from two pressure readings and the volume of the original sample."

"Sillimanite, kyanite, and andalusite are aluminum silicates having the same chemical composition (Al2Si05) and are used in the ceramic industry for the manufacture of high-grade refractories. ""Natural sillimanite with added corundum or other alumina to just short of mullite 2SiO2) proportions is unequalled for jobs where strength at high temperatures, resistance to spalling, and resistance to slagging by acid slags is desired. High-grade porcelain ware also requires these minerals.""At the same cost, sillimanite would be preferred for most uses, but the lack of any large source of sillimanite has given economic preference to kyanite or andalusite for special refractories and high-grade porcelain ware.""3/The possible economic value of the sillimanite schist in the piedmont Plateau was first recognized by Dr. L. L. Smith, of the University of South Carolina, who published an article in the Engineering and Mining Journal, August 1943, on an occurrence of sillimanite schist in South Carolina.The Bureau of Mines was interested in developing a large source of sillimanite to relieve the shortage of high-grade refractories, and initiated a project to locate the ore-bearing areas in Georgia and South Carolina and to develop the most favorable ones.Two hundred and seventy-eight outcrops of sillimanite-bearing schists were found by a Bureau of Mines engineer.4/ The schist occurs irregularly throughout a belt extending from Talbot County, Georgia; to Spartanburg County, South Carolina, about 220•miIes long and approximately 15 miles in maximum width. The Bureau drilled four areas of the more coarsely crystallized schist in Georgia and South Carolina:In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon; chief; conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work; and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch;.R. G. Knickerbocker; chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director."

This paper will be of interest to those who are actually developing a mineral prospect or planning to do so, as well as to investors who are considering the problem of financing the development of the prospect, so that they may know what the risks are and what capital expenditures are necessary before a prospect may become a mine. The term "prospect" used broadly, as it is in this paper, is defined as any property that has a mineral showing of sufficient interest to warrant development, irrespective of prior work, Such previous exploration, however, may be extensive and consist of several tunnels or adits connected by raises, or of shafts with several levels. There may also be a small mining and milling plant on the prospect which, because of the lack of capital for development or the lack of markets for the products, is now idle. Such prospects may warrant further capital investment for development work or for a mine plant to raise to the stage of profitable production.

"Ventilation is one of the meet important factors in mining, although until recent years less thought has probably been given to effective ventilation than to any other one phase of mining. In the past, very little, if any, attention was given air courses until they became so constricted by falls that the volume of air was greatly reduced; and, in addition, the stoppings and doors were so poorly constructed that only a very small percentage of air reached the face workings.As a matter of fact, mines have been visited where the volume of air being circulated in certain sections was much larger than in others, and where the management was striving to increase the flow of air in those sections with the least air current, believing the ventilation to be deficient. After sampling and analyzing the return air from the various sections in such mines it has been found that the quality of the air in certain places with the largest flow was more impure than in some of those with the least flow.In past years, practically all mine fans were operated by steam-driven engines supplied with steam from the mire boiler plant. No check was made on the steam consumption or the power cost of operating the fan, therefore the management had very little if any definite information as to cost of ventilating the mine.With the increased use of electrically-driven equipment in mines electricity is being used more and more to drive mine ventilating fans, and since in many instances the current is purchased from central power plants operators have come to realize that in many cases the cost of operating the fans is very high. Some engineers estimate that it ranges from 20 to 50 per cent of the total power cost of the mine. This information, together with the fact that mines are now being developed on a larger scale, requiring larger quantities of air for the men to dilute the gases liberated, has caused the large progressive companies to make, a more comprehensive study of mine ventilation, resulting in a decided improvement in the quality and quantity of air at the face workings, as well as reducing materially the ventilating costs."

This Bureau of Mines report describes the unit cost procedure for estimating direct development costs within a cave block in an undercut block caving mine. Costs of supervision, labor, equipment, and supplies are combined to build a unit cost for each type and size of mine development opening in the block. These costs are then combined to estimate the direct cost for developing a ton of ore. Operating data from several domestic metal mines are combined with a hypothetical mining system to illustrate the costing procedure.

During the interval 1929-41, geophysical exploration in Russia made considerable progress, as reflected in publications. The greater part of these publications was available during the preparation of Geophysical Abstracts and Ms been abstracted in them. The rest was not received and remained unaccounted for. The Experimental Mine of the United States Bureau of Mines is a unique coal mine that serves as a large-scale testing laboratory. It is used primarily for testing the explosibility of coal-dust and gases but is also the workshop for many other kinds of research work of which the chief object is to increase safety in mining. The mine is situated in Allegheny County, Pa., about 13 miles southwest of Pittsburgh among the high hills of the west bank of the Monongahela River, at the northeastern edge of the gas-coal district of the Pittsburgh coal bed which extends south through the Connellsville coking-coal district into West Virginia. The Pittsburgh bed, of the Upper Carboniferous age, is one of the most extensive continuous coal beds in the United States, if not in the world. Throughout large areas it shows remarkable uniformity of thickness, levelness, and character of coal, which is a coking coal of high-grade bituminous rank. Its thickness in the northern part is 5 to 5 ½ feet and in the central and southern part is 7 to 9 feet.

The Fort Randall Reservoir project, on the Missouri River at Pickstown, S. Dak., was designed by the Corps of Engineers and is part of the Missouri River Basin Development Program. The location of the project with respect to adjacent features is shown' in figure 1. When the project is finished, it will include a large earthwork dam and 12 circular tunnels, 8 of which will be equipped for power and 4 for flood control. Various phases of the construction have been contracted to independent companies, and at present four companies are working on different phases of the project under a rigid time schedule. Western Contracting Corp. is the contractor on stage II, earthwork; Johnson-Winston Construction Co. is the contractor for construction of the intake towers at the upstream side of the dam; McCarthy Improvement Co. has the contract for the power house and the outlet works on the downstream side; and Silas Mason Co. has the contract for driving the power and flood-control tunnels. The latter two companies use the same roads for ingress and egress to their respective work areas and the same general waste dump area. Under such circumstances, it is necessary that each company stay on a time schedule in regular sequence to avoid interference with the other.
