The first bulletin (245)3 in this series, which appeared in 1932, summarized the entropy values then available for the elements and inorganic compounds, results being listed for some 150 substances. In the interim advances in the realms of spectroscopy applicable to the determination of thermodynamic properties and in the development of methods of calculation therefrom have added many highly accurate values. Moreover, through the efforts of Prof. W. M. Latimer (286) and his coworkers, satisfactory entropy values are now available for all but a few of the common inorganic ions in aqueous solution. At the same time rapid progress has continued in the study of low-temperature heat capacities in several laboratories, In addition, compilation and correlation of data pertaining to vapor pressures (247), thermodynamic properties of carbonates (258), thermodynamic properties of sulfur and its inorganic compounds (250), and the thermodynamic properties of metal carbides and nitrides (251), which were published as members of this series, have yielded many values. As a result, over 500 usable entropy values for inorganic substances may now be tabulated. This bulletin originally was planned as a second revision of the first member of this series, the first revision (249) having appeared in 1936; however, because of requests for the explanatory section of the first bulletin from those teaching thermodynamics, it was decided to com¬bine the information in the first bulletin and its revision with the data that have appeared since 1935 and to repeat the explanatory material in somewhat more detail. The purpose of this bulletin is therefore to give the available values of the entropies at 298.1° K. of the elements and inorganic compounds, together with enough explanation of the methods employed in calculating entropies to make the results comprehensible.

The workshop on "Cyanide Effluents from Mineral Processing' was held on February 2-3, 1982, at the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Salt Lake City Research Center, Salt Lake City, Utah. The workshop was sponsored by the minerals industry, supporting industries, the National Science Foundation, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines through the Utah Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institute, College of Mines, University of Utah Prior to the workshop, a Working Paper was prepared and delivered to the participants. This paper was used as a guide during panel discussions and forms the basis for this proceedings document. The workshop focused on use of cyanide as it relates to the gold and silver mining industry and the froth flotation processes employed by mineral mining companies. Its intent was to discuss "state of the art" technology and provide information pertinent to cyanide use in the minerals industry. No attempt was made to advocate regulatory limits or set policy governing the use of cyanide. The principal topics of discussion included- (1) the chemistry and use of cyanides; (2) control and treatment of cyanide mining wastes; (3) toxicity of mining wastes; (4) fate of cyanide in the environment; and (5) the analytical chemistry of cyanide.

The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting mine illumination research to determine if light-emitting diode (LED) cap lamps can improve safety by reducing glare. Glare can impede a miner?s ability to see hazards and to safely perform their work. Another objective is to determine if a person?s age is a factor. This is important because the workforce is aging ? the average miner is now about 43 years old. Three cap lamps were used to evaluate glare: an incandescent cap lamp, a commercially available LED cap lamp and a NIOSH prototype LED cap lamp. Thirty NIOSH personnel from the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) served as test subjects. Three age groups were established with ten subjects in each group. Testing was conducted in the Mine Illumination Laboratory (MIL) of NIOSH PRL. The results indicate no statistically significant difference in discomfort glare among the incandescent and LED cap lamps. However, an analysis of variance for disability glare indicates that the LED cap lamps were superior for the older subjects. Disability glare scores for the oldest subject group improved 53.8% when using the NIOSH prototype LED cap lamp compared to the incandescent cap lamp and 36.5% compared to the commercial LED cap lamp. It ap­pears that, given the conditions of this study, LED cap lamps will not increase discomfort glare and can enable significant improvements in disability glare for older workers. It is also evident that not all LEDs are created equal. The disability glare improved the best for older workers when they used the NIOSH prototype LED cap lamp, which has a different spectral power distribution (SPD) (more short wavelength energy) than the commercial LED cap lamp. Therefore, for disability glare, the results suggest that the SPD is an important factor to consider in cap lamp design.

The primary objective of this program was to determine the toxic fume and fire hazard of elastomeric noise abatement materials with a limited effort expended on the evaluation of specific treatments applied to mine timbers. Under the conditions employed, for a dimethyl silicone rubber, formaldehyde presented the major toxic threat; acrolein was the main toxic species for both polyester and polyether urethanes and an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin; in the case of flame-retardant styrene-butadiene rubber compositions, hydrogen chloride, and in the case of PFA-treated timber, furfural, were the major toxic compounds. Of the materials studied, the flame-retardant styrene-butadiene rubbers presented the greatest toxic hazard. The generated data have been reduced to toxic load tabulations amenable to employment for potential hazard assessment.

"Refiners are generally considered solely as fuel producers, but actually they also comprise a group one of the largest consumers of fuel. For example, during the year 1929 the refineries-burned 51,544,000 barrels of oil as fuel, or the equivalent of over 5 per cent of the crude oil processed in that year. In addition enough other fuels - coal, natural gas, refinery or still gas, and petroleum coke - were utilized to raise the total fuel consumption based on B. t. u. equivalent to more than 10 per cent of the heat value in the total crude oil run to stills. Refineries utilize fuel chiefly as the heat-forming element distillation, but also under-boilers in the formation of steam used in refining, for the heating of buildings, and in the generation of electricity.In the early days of refining, the problem of fuel utilization and fuel economy was of scant importance to the refiners. Margins of profit were comparatively high and the major portion of the operatros1 attention was directed toward increasing their throughput. However, the keen competition that has prevailed in the refining industry over the past five years or more has taught the refiners that their expenses, one of the largest items of which is the cost of fuel, must be curtailed. Thus in 1925 the refiners used an average of 829,000 B. t. u. to refine a barrel of crude oil, wheras by 1929 this average had been reduced to 639,000 B. t. u., a decline of 23 per cent (see fig. 1)Since 1925 oil has ranked first as a refinery fuel (see fig. 2). The use of natural gas increased during 1926 and 1927 but declined in 1928 and 1929. On the other hand, the use of refinery gas has grown rapidly in importance. Coal has shown a steady decline in use at refineries since 1925. Petroleum coke has never supplied more than a very small fraction of the total fuel requirements, although there has been a steady increase in its use."

The application of manganese in iron and steel metallurgy is very inter¬ esting historically. In general, ancient- irons and steels contained virtu¬ ally no manganese, probably because the available iron ores contained■only small amounts of the manganese oxides. Occasionally, samples of ancient irons were found to have appreciable amounts of manganese, but their presence is considered accidental and dependent upon the ore available to craftsmen of that time. Two specimens of iron (139;— made in 500 A.D. contained .negligible quantities of manganese. A sample of steel which constituted the base of .the Khan Baba pillar in India was probably processed in 12p B. C. by the1 cementa¬ tion of wrought iron. This material; contained 0.02 percent manganese and 0.70 percent carbon (20) . One Damascus-steel sword forged some time between 11'60 ' and l400 A. D. was found to contain 0.1^-i percent manganese and 0.j6l percent carbon. The manganese content of this bla.de was much higher than that of any other material of this type which has been analysed. In every other instance the manganese content was below 0.02 percent. A cast steel manufactured by the East India. Co. in India in the early nineteenth century, under the name of Wootz steel, contained rather appreciable amounts of manganese. This material was made by melting and refining fairly high-manganese pig iron prepared from high-manganese ore. Heath (106), who was working at the Co. plant between 1S20 and 1S40, was convinced that the manganese content of the steel was the determining fa,ctor in its high quality. He learned of certain difficulties English steel manufacturers were having in making even fair-grade steel, and analyses of the material indicated low manganese contents. This convinced him that.if the use of manganese could be introduced in England its steel would be greatly benefited. In consequence, he moved to England and soon was producing certain grades of ferromanganese for use with the crucible process. He recommended addition of this metallic material to the ingot mold just before pouring. It was soon found that inferior brands of steel containing only traces of manganese could be greatly improved by such additions. All metallurgists of that time became convinced

There has been a substantial increase in the use of rubber-tired front-end loaders in the mining industry in recent years. Concurrent with this increased usage, in the period of 1966 to 1970, there were at least 74 mining industry fatalities involving front-end loaders, or (on the average) in excess of one fatality per month. When the usage of front-end loaders by the construction industry and other industries, organizations, and agencies, such as the Government (i.e., Department of Defense), along with the uncounted numbers of serious, but non-fatal accidents, are included in the picture, the safety record for front-end loaders, of necessity, becomes a serious subject for study. There is an urgent need for attempts to be made to eliminate or reduce the number of safety hazards; to decrease the confusing diversity of controls designs found on present front-end loaders; to improve the maintenance and operating procedures; to formulate better personnel policies; to increase management and official awareness of the extent of the problem, in both industry and the Government; etc.; in order to decrease the number of accidents. Part of the problem may be traced to the fact that the operator of a front-end loader is frequently designated a "heavy equipment operator." This implies that he is automatically qualified to operate any model, of any manufacturer's, wheeled or tracked, front-end loader as well as many other types and classes of heavy equipment. Contrary to automotive practice, the complement of primary operating and emergency controls varies widely from model to model, as well as from manufacturer to manufacturer. Not only are certain controls present on one front-end loader model and absent on others, but there are significant differences in the modes of control operation, in the functions performed by superficially similar controls, in the location of the various controls, etc.

A number of problems that developed in processing the halloysitic clays of eastern Washington and northern Idaho were investigated by the Bureau of Mines. The deflocculating effect of tetra sodium pyrophosphate is compared with several other compounds, and on the basis of current theory, the advantage of sodium pyrophosphate as a deflocculating agent is explained. The adsorption of the sodium ion by clay in a clay"-water system was established by a radioactive tracer technique, and the deflocculating action of sodium pyro- phosphate was postulated. The effective dispersion of the halloysitic clays was limited by the occurrence of tightly bound aggregates of small, individual crystals. Disaggregation of the agglomerates was investigated by liquid extrusion and ball milling of dilute slurries and by extrusion of the clay in a plastic state. The greatest increase in the production of small particles was by high? pressure liquid extrusion.

1. This investigation shows that the most important beds in Claiborne County, from the standpoint of present production and reserves, are the Coal Creek and Jellico. Together, they contain 69 percent of the known recoverable reserves in the county. Reserves in five other beds are tabulated in this report; in order of quantity of reserves, they are: Blue Gem, Lower Pioneer, Pewee, Big Mary, and Rex. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 60 million tons, as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 55 million tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to permit making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

"The large reserves of low-rank coals in the western United States are at a disadvantage in competing with the more mature but less plentiful eastern coals, which are nearer important markets and are more suitable for combustion and coke production. However, low-rank coals generally are amenable to hydrogenation, and the western coals might become an important source of liquid fuels and organic chemicals when petroleum is less plentiful.In view of these facts an the tremendous quantities available, further information on the western coals clearly desirable. The purpose of the work described in this paper was to study the hydrogenation characteristics of some of the low-rank western coals in discontinuous converters. The data obtained in this manner, which are inadequate for predicting the suitability of coals for large-scale continuous hydrogenation, were used as a basis for selecting samples for further study in the Bureau's experimental coal-hydrogenation plant (26, 35). 8/ Because of the general importance of the western coals and recently demonstrated relation between coal hydrogenation and petrograghy (14, 15, 16), the proportions of anthraxylon, (vitrain), translucent attritus, and opaque matter were determined. In some instances samples of anthraxylon were isolated and hydrogenated separately so that their properties might be compared with those of the entire coal. The samples studied include peat, brown coal, lignite, sub-bituminous coals, and low-rank bituminous coals."

An award is a form of recognition given for superior performance in a special field of endeavor. Each year awards are given by the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association and the National Safety Council to the coal-mining industry's underground and open-pit mines that have worked a specific number of man-hours without a lost-time injury. These awards have a dual significance in that they prove efficiency can be attained without injury to persons. Safety awards do not result from luck or good fortune but do result from sincere desire coupled with sufficient effort and cooperation to achieve a desired goal.

7253. Arkhangelsky, A. D. Geological Results of the General Magnetometric and Gravimetric Surveys of the U.S.S.R. (in Russian). Internat. Geol. Cong., Rep. of the 17th Sess., Moscow-Leningrad, 1937, vol. 1, Moscow, 1939, pp. 241-250. Geophysical methods have been used in the U.S.S.R. to study geological problems. Such is the case of the general magnetometric and gravimetric surveys made jointly by the Main Physical Observatory, Main Office of Geodesy and Cartography, Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism, and Main Office of Geophysical Prospecting. Some institutions supplied the data, others processed them. Geological interpretation was made by the author. (1) Regional magnetic anomalies in the plains of the U.S.S.R. are traceable to the folded substratum overlain by sedimentary rocks; these anomalies promise to yield data characterizing the substratum in respect to strike and depth. Anomalies in European U.S.S.R. suggest that the pre-Cambrian -substratum of the East European plateau consists of elements of different ages. In the most ancient of them, the main strike of the folding is almost latitudinal; in the younger ones, the folding is oriented in the meridian. (2) The Faye and Bouguer gravity anomalies are caused primarily by differences in the density of rocks composing the upper crust and by unknown processes producing changes of density at depth; these processes are not connected with isosiatic movements. The anomalies in the European and adjoining Asiatic U.S.S.R. promise to indicate the volume of the pre-Cambrian massif of the east-European plateau and to clarify the interrelations between the Ural, Tian-Shan, and Donetz Basin folding systems, as well as between the Dnieper-Donetz depression and the mid-European depression. - V. "In 1928, there were 47 fatal accidents in the California petroleum industry, 14.6 per cent more than occurred in 1927 when 41 men lost their lives in the drilling, producing, manufacturing, and marketing divisions of the industry. This increase in the number of fatal accidents for 1928 has caused the first upward trend in the fatality curve of the California petroleum industry since 1923. In no other year during the 6-year period have the fatalities in any one year been greater than those for the preceding year. This fact should be given serious consideration and study by the petroleum industry, and an endeavor should be made to cause the number of fatalities again to decrease and conform to the previous gradual declining trend of the fatality curve.The following chart shows the trend of fatal accidents during the past six years:Of the 47 fatalities in 1928, 30 occurred in the drilling and producing division, 1 in the pipe line and transportation division, 14 in the refining division, and 2 in the sales and marketing division. A comparison of the number of fatalities in each division for 1927, and 1928, is given in the following table:3"

The purpose of this paper is to describe the conditions of occurrence of iron ore in a particular property and to present sufficient details of equipment and production methods to convey to the unacquainted operator a correct idea of the mining practice.

"Packaged fuel" is the trade name applied by the industry to a product consisting of coal screenings and a binder compressed into 3 -or 4-inch cubes and wrapped (six or eight in a package) in sturdy paper and sealed with gummed tape. Parry describes the product in greater detail and distinguishes clearly between packaged fuel and briquettes. The industry developed from the desire of retail coal dealers to improve utilization of the relatively large quantities of slack sizes that result from the degradation, during shipping and handling in the yard, of friable coal, particularly Pocahontas coal. During the war an attempt was made to apply this technique to anthracite fines, and a recent publication of the U. S. Bureau of Mines reported the results of physical and combustion tests on packaged fuels containing anthracite fines. References made in this report to the previous investigation on packaged fuels containing anthracite represent data or conclusions presented in Report of Investigations 3882. This investigation was conducted as a continuation of the previously reported studies and consisted of physical and combustion tests of packaged fuels made from high-volatile bituminous coal, as well as the low-volatile bituminous coal ordinarily used in the industry, to determine their relative suitability for domestic firing. Particular attention was given to the smoke-producing properties of the packaged fuels because of the increasing importance of the prevention or reduction of smoke from hand-fired domestic heating plants resulting from the widespread enactment of smoke-prevention ordinances.

This report is one of a series published by the Federal Bureau of Mines to describe methods and costs of mining uranium on the Colorado Plateau. The Navajo Uranium Division of Kerr-McGee Oil Industries, Inc., mines uranium from several deposits of carnotite-type ores, which lie buried in the Lukachukai Mountains on the Navajo Indian Reservation, Apache County, Ariz. The country is rugged and isolated Constructing and maintaining roads has been a continuous task. The ore bodies occur within the Salt Wash member of the Jurassic Morrison formation and are similar to other such deposits on the plateau. The current mining activity in the Lukachukai Mountains is a result of uranium-ore discoveries in 1949, although the Navajos undoubtedly knew of the outcrops of yellow uranium minerals long before that time. The ruggedness of the country and the heavy soil cover over much of the surface hampered prospecting, but probably the main reason the ore was not found sooner is that no one took the trouble to look for it in the Lukachukai Mountains.

The Eufaula bauxite district of Barbour and Henry Counties in southeast Alabama covers an area approximately 14 miles long, 6 miles wide at the eastern extremity near the Chattahoochee River, and 10 miles wide at the western end near the east fork of the Choctawhatchee River (see figs. 1 and 2). The long axis of this polygon bears a little south of east.

"The O'Jack Mining Co.'s zinc and lead deposits in Jasper County, Missouri, have been worked intermittently since the early nineties; production from these deposits was greatest during World War I and II - 4,668 tons of zinc and lead concentrates. The deposits are in a sink-hole structure in which intense deformation has taken place and in areas of disturbance in the sheet-ground horizon.While high-grade ore was being mined, the operators sank seven churn-drill holes for the purpose of extending reserves. They then asked the Bureau of Mines to explore the deposit with the object of developing a reserve of lower-grade ore that could be mined by open-pit methods. Twenty-two holes were sunk. The methods of drilling and sampling and the logs of the holes, as of those drilled by the operators, are given later in this report.INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mined has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts development by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. Preliminary examination, conduct of exploratory work, and preparation of final reports are functions of the Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, under the supervision of Dr. R. S. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has established a wire rope research laboratory to examine the factors that affect the life of wire rope. Two sin-diameter 6x25 fiber core (FC) ropes were degraded on a bending fatigue machine, These were the second and third ropes in a series of tests on this construction and size rope. Tensile and nondestructive tests were performed on samples of the rope to determine the relationship between rope deterioration and rope breaking strength. The tests indicated that once a wire rope nears the end of its service life, both deterioration and the consequent loss of rope strength begin to increase at an accelerated rate.
