"Elemantary ConsiderationsAlthough magnetiem was first discovered in and derives its name from an oxide of iron found in magnesia and called lodestone its pracical uses date from the discoveries of Faraday concerning its relation to the electric current. We may therefore start our discussion of magnetic properties with Faraday's law for relation between induced electromotive force and the change in a magnetic where e is the electromotive force induced in an electric circuit by a unit rate of change of magnetic flux N, H is the intensity of the magnetic field, S is the area enclosed by the circuit, and i an angle between H and the normal to dS. In the simplest case we could use this law to measure the strength of a magnetic field by passing it at a measured rate through a coil of copper wire and determining the,electromotive force. As a matter of practical convenience, it will be simpler to nee the total quantity of electricity produced by a change of magnetic field. For this purpose we may let i denote the strength of the electric current induced by the change of magnetic field in time in a circuit of area a and resistance R. Then the total electric quantity. "INTRODUCTION The use of scrap mica as an industrial raw material has grown rapidly during the past two decades. Demands by various industries for ground mica for use in the roofing, paint, rubber, plastics, and wallpaper trades as well as for less extensive uses in insulation, oil-well drilling, welding, pipeline enamel, decorative material, and for other purposes exceed present (1947) supplies.A small proportion of the raw material used comes from the Black Hills of South Dakota, where casual recovery has been practiced in the exploitation of pegnatite deposits for more valuable minerals. The annual production of scrap mica in the Black Hills for the years 1939 to 1946 is shown in figure 19. 4/Although small, this production of scrap mica materially augments the incomes of numerous operators.Volume production of mica would offer attractive opportunities for obtaining steady and more economical supplies of the rare minerals as byproducts. Appreciable supplies of beryl, lithia minerals, sheet mica, tantalite-columbite, and cassiterite could accrue. Furthermore, a stable scrap-mica production would complement the production of quality feldspar, for which the Black Hills pegmatites are noted, and would help balance the economy of pegmatite mineral production.Mechanical methods of separation are requisite to production of enough scrap mica to be generally profitable. Various phases of the characteristics end treatment of mica have been investigated by the Bureau of Mines. A bibliography of these reports is appended.In 1945 the Bureau of Mines conducted pilot-plant tests to recover scrap mica by selective screening of crushed pegmatite. More recently the problem has boon studied in the Pegmatite Research Laboratory to aid in developing technological methods by which scrap mica may be separated from crushed pegmatite."

The Bureau of Mines is testing a dewatering technique for phosphatic clay waste that will recover a portion of the water lost using conventional waste disposal methods and produce solids suitable for land reclamation. The technique utilizes a flocculant, polyethylene oxide (PEO), that forms strong, stable flocs that can be dewatered on a static screen followed by further dewatering on a rotary screen. In field tests conducted in northern Florida, clay wastes containing a nominal 2.5 pct solids have been consolidated to greater than 20 pct solids. The rate at which PEO-treated material continues to dewater in a mine cut also was monitored. Preliminary results indicate that PEO--treated material will dewater to 30 pct solids in 140 days. Pretreatment of phosphatic clay waste with lime and H202 was shown to improve the dewatering technique for problem clay wastes.

"This study was undertaken to provide a more adequate knowledge of the chemistry of the sulfide volatilization process for recovery of tin from low-grade Bolivian ores. The investigation was partly supported by the Department of State under its program for scientific cooperation with South American republics.The results of this investigation demonstrate the conditions under which cassiterite (Sn02) may be converted to stannous sulfide by reaction with pyrite or sulfur vapor. Quantitative data are given on the rate of sulfidization and on the vapor pressure of stannous sulfide.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the United States is the world's largest consumer of tin, virtually no tin ores occur within our national borders. Most of the world's tin supply comes from alluvial deposits in the Far East and in Africa, The major sources of tin ores are Malaya, Indochina, Bolivia, Belgian Congo, Nigeria, Thailand, Burma, China, and the United Kingdom. Bolivia is the only important source of tin in the western hemisphere. It was the chief source of tin f or the United States during World War II. The Government-owned tin smelter at Texas City, Tex., was built primarily for smelting Bolivian ores and depends largely on Bolivian ores for its operation. Bolivia is the only major tin-producing country in which the tin ores occur as vein or lode deposits requiring underground mining. Most of the tin from the Far East and Africa is mined by dredges from alluvial or placer depos its. It is recovered as a high-grade concentrate of cassiterite relatively free from impurities. The tin minerals in the lode deposits are more intimately associated with other minerals and more difficult to separate into a clean concentrate. Furthermore, a large part of the tin in the original ore is lost during concentration. The ores as mined contain only a few percent of tin, so they must be milled to separate the gangue minerals and produce a concentrate containing 30 to 40 percent tin before they are shipped to the smelter. The losses of tin that occur during milling vary from 18 to 65 percent. The average recovery of tin from Bolivian ores is probably 50 to 60 percent."

A gas well has a certain definite capacity to deliver gas from the gas sand through the producing string of pipe. This capacity depends upon the pressures in the sand; that is, a well will deliver gas at a rate of flow which is determined by the formation or "shut-inn pressure in the sand and the back pressure at the face of the sand in the well. The three factors, rate of flow, formation or "shut-in" pressure, and the back pressure, for a given well, can be written into a fundamental relation which is strictly applicable only to that well. This relation can be used to determine the capacity of the well to deliver gas from any formation pressure against any back pressure held at the f ace of the sand in the well. Studies have been made of the deliveries of 400 gas wells operating under different conditions of pressure, Most of the wells which have been studied are in Osage County, Okla.; however, several representative studies have been made on wells in southern Louisiana, southern Texas, the Texas Panhandle, and West Virginia.

Although thermodynamic data for ferrous oxide are among the most important in extractive metallurgy, adequate values have not been available until quite recently. The older data suffered not only from the usual experimental difficulties but especially from lack of the knowledge that ferrous oxide of stoichiometrical composition does not exist as a single, thermodynamically stable crystalline phase under any circumstances. This paper reports new experimental data on the heat of formation of ferrous oxide by two methods (combustion calorimetry and solution calorimetry), employing material of unequivocal composition. The results are compared with values obtained from data for the hydrogen reduction, carbon monoxide reduction, and disproportionation reactions of ferrous oxide, and a best value is selected. A table of heat and free energy of formation values of ferrous oxide to 2,000°K is given. These values are combined with available data for water, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide to obtain theoretical heats and free energies of reduction corresponding to the selected heat of formation. Hydrogen and carbon monoxide reduction equilibria are compared, and the differences in trend with temperature and the percentage utilization of the reductants are considered.

The objective of these projects is to provide an ordered and sequenced series of advances toward the Bureau's overall goal of providing the system technology required to create a healthier and safer working environment for the Nation's miners.

In the summer of 1937 the authors began a series of time studies of the various processes employed in the' production of crushed stone. These studies, made at quarries scattered over the eastern and southeastern parts of the United States, have not been completed, but to make results available to the industry as early as possible it was decided to publish summaries of the studies made to January 1, 1939, as a series of progress reports. The first of these reports dealt with power-shovel loading and was issued as Report of Investigations 3461 in September 1939. The present circular discusses analyses of the time Studies of the haulage systems at the same quarries. OBJECT OF STUDY The pressure of business problems frequently requires the entire atten¬tion of quarry management and in consequence internal plant economies often are neglected, Also, operating officials absorbed in their local problems are prone to overlook possible economies that would attract attention immediately were they critically examining another plant. The authors felt that similar studies of many plants by impartial engineers would disclose possibilities for cost reduction or greater efficiency in internal plant processes.

On Thursday, March 18, 1937, the country was shocked by news of a terrific explosion at the New London, Tex., school, which caused the death of 280 pupils rind 14 teachers. The explosion occurred at about 3:05 p.m. in the largest of the 11 school buildings on the campus. Figure 1 shows this building, market; "Main high school building?, with respect to other buildings, pipe lines, oil wells, and gas lines on the property.

"INTRODUCTION The injection of gas into the McClosky limestone in the adjoining, Griffin and New Harmony field in Indiana and Illinois and resulting increases in oil and gas production from this zone ore described in this report.Since 1911, the use of compressed air or as to increase oil production by supplementing natural reservoir energy has been widely adopted, and has resulted in the recovery of much additional oil, which otherwise would have been left underground. In many of the newer oil fields, including Griffin and New Harmony, a part of the compressed residue gas from natural gasoline plants is returned to the reservoir as a secondary method to increase oil and gasoline production. Part of the injected gas is stored underground for future use.By presenting data on many secondary recovery operations in a series of reports 5-9/ the Bureau of Mines has sought to stimulate interest in secondary recovery as a means of increasing oil recovery and current oil production for wartime needs. Most of the elder fields in the United States produce oil from sandstone reservoirs, and probably more than 90 percent of secondary recovery operations have been developed in oil bearing sandstones. During recent years, the volume of oil obtained by primary methods from limestone reservoirs has increased steadily, but as yet little has been done to recover, by secondary means,,the large volumes of oil left in limestone reservoirs when primary methods production are no longer profitable. Because of inherent differences in the origin and nature of the pore spaces between sandstones and limestones and because of differences in permeability and fluid content, secondary recovery methods, which are successful in sandstone-reservoirs, are not always applicable to limestones. Not much he been written concerning secondary recovery operations in limestone reservoirs, and few data are available to assist operators in developing such secondary recovery projects."

The Bureau of Mines has developed MULSIM/BM, an improved computer program using the boundary-element approach for geomechanical analysis of mine plans in single or multiple coal seams. This Information Circular presents the improved features of the MULSIN/BM program. The four major improvements are the following: (1) Ability to specify up to 26 material property sets. (2) A new material model capability for gob and inserted materials such as packwalls or cribs. (3) Ability to model a large area with a grid of undivided blocks and to subdivide only a specified fine-mesh portion of these blocks into elements. (4) Specification of extraction ratios for the undivided blocks. In addition, an interactive graphics mesh generator program was written to accompany MULSIM/BM. A complete user's guide and program listings are included within the appendixes. The MULSIM/BM and mesh generator programs are available on tape from the National Technical Information Service.3

Selection of a suitable coal or coals for the manufacture of coke of desired quality with due consideration of the purpose for which the coke is intended requires careful thought, and often it will pay to go to consider able expense in testing such coals as may be available. In general it will always be possible to obtain a satisfactory coal or blend of coals for the particular purpose in view, but in some places the cost of transportation would be prohibitive. It may then be necessary to consider a coal or coals inferior in grade, rank, or both. At times, in fact, only one inferior coal may be available, when the problem becomes mainly one of selecting equipment and operating conditions best adapted to that coal, keeping in mind that the end product of the plant must compete with the imported product in the market the plant will serve. This applies particularly to new projects for which it is necessary to build a plant and start with a clean slate, so to speak. However, it will pay every coke-plant manager to employ a force to continually test the coals used and the coke produced to make sure that the quality is not changing appreciably. Furthermore, if the supply of coals used becomes exhausted it will be necessary to use other coals. Continual testing is particularly necessary at plants using borderline coals or blends, where slight changes in the composition or in operation of the ovens may render them dangerously expanding. In this connection it should be stated that control in the newer coke plants is considerably easier than for those built a decade or so ago, consequently in the new ovens a given operating program can be maintained more precisely. This point is important, because one of the main requirements of the coke user is uniformity in both physical and chemical characteristics. For example, any appreciable changes in the quality of coke delivered to the blast?-furnace operator will involve changes in operation if the best results are to be obtained. Such changes are expensive usually they take considerable time and involve production of inferior iron.

This paper is the second of a series of progress reports on a study, of the hydrometallurgy of manganese which is being conducted in an endeavor to make possible utilization of the large deposits of low-grade domestic manganese ores that occur in several States. There are at least four processes in which a knowledge of the action of SO2 gas on manganese oxides at elevated temperatures may prove of value. One ,of these involves dissolution of manganese from ores. The Bureau of Mines has investigated the hydrometallurgy of manganese by a process in which SO2 gas, a waste product at many smelters, is passed into water to form a solvent for manganese. Although Several manganese minerals acre readily dissolved, rhodochrosite (MnCO3) was attacked but superficially.§. Recent experiments have shown that a roast at 650 to 900°C converts the manganese of rhodochrosite to a form that is quickly dissolved by a weak SO2 solution. Introduction of smelter gases containing as much as 5 per cent SO2 during such a roast would not add much to the cost of the operation and might result in the formation of considerable water-soluble manganese sulphate.

A range of processing conditions and compositions have been evaluated in order to optimize the properties of TiB2-(Ni,Cu) composites for application as a non-sparking tool material for use in coal mining operations. Fifty billets containing from 70 to 9S weight percent titanium diboride were hot pressed at 3000 psi between 2400°F and 2650°F. Samples which were cut from these billets were used to measure hardness, bend strength and impact strength so that composition/processing optimization could be effected. Eight compositions selected on this basis were evaluated by incendivity tests in order to choose the best composition. The best results were obtained for an 85 w/o TiB2-12 w/o Cu-3 w/o Ni composite hot pressed at 2650°F and 3000 psi. This material appears to be the best choice for fabrication of coal cutter bits to be evaluated in field tests.

We describe inconsistencies in disease and illness reporting in U.S. mining, identify under-reporting of disease and illness in U.S. mining, and summarize selected disease and illness in U.S. mining from 1983 through 2001. Methods: We summarized information on mining-related disease and illness data for the years 1983-2001 from the Mining Safety and Health Administration database (MSHA). Results: Discrepancies exist in types of information collected by the Centers for Disease and Control, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and the Mining Safety and Health Admin¬istration database. Several factors, including a worker's fear of losing his or her job, health insurance, or other job-related benefits contribute to under-reporting of disease and illness information in the US mining industry. Conclusions: Since 1997, both number of workers employed in mining and disease and illness rates have decreased; however, the highest disease and illness rates in mining continue to be coal worker's pneumoconiosis and hearing loss.

In 1939, the author made a survey of relative gravity in the Mediterranean-basin, 41° 35,5' to 41° 56.3' northern latitude and 0° 10,3' to 0° 28' longitude, referred to Mt. Mario. Ten stations were covered; 25 other stations had been occupied in the vicinity of Rome and in Albanian mountains during previous years. The new measurements revealed gravity anomalies ranging within the following limits: (1) With a free-air reduction, between + 29 and + 120 mgl., average + 60 mgl.; and (2) with a Bouguer reduction, between + 22 and + 87 mgl., average + 41.5 mgl. - V. In the course of the investigation into the causes, behavior, and control of mine fires, which the Bureau of Mines is now conducting, some attention was given to the subject of spontaneous heating. It is self-evident that the temperature of a pile of broken coal will rice if the rate of generation of heat exceeds the rate of brat dissipation and will fall if the opposite is the case.
