From an interesting and intriguing scientific research topic, deep sea mining has altered into an interesting mining prospect over the last years. Ten years ago most of the focus was on geological investigations, searching for typical deep sea deposits and getting answers on where we can find them and how these deposits were formed. At this moment we know much more about the interesting deposit possibilities and with our quest for minerals, metals and other materials to feed global economic growth, answers as to the technical and economic feasibility to mine these deposits are sought. This is not a new phenomenon as we already witnessed such question late 1970?s and early 1980?s. Most of the focus was on mining manganese nodules and brines in the Red Sea driven by the report of the Club of Rome that predicted shortages in near future at that time. Development went different, but later in the 1990?s a rival of interest could be noticed for mining deep sea deposits.

Germany?s industry heavily depends on the continuous import of mineral commodities such as manganese, copper, nickel, and molybdenum. Due to the strong increase in metal prices since 2002 Germany?s federal geological survey, the Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe (Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources, hereafter called BGR) applied for a license area for the exploration of deep-sea manganese nodules in the Pacific manganese nodule belt between the Clarion and Clipperton fracture zones. A 75,000 km2 covering license area was eventually granted to the BGR by the International Seabed Authority (ISA) in 2006. It is separated into two parts: ?W1? (17,000 km2) and ?E1? (58,000 km2; Fig. 1). The BGR obtained initial information on the abundance and grade of nodules in the license area from samples collected during three cruises with R/V Valdivia and one cruise with R/V Sonne between 1976 and 1978 (Rühlemann et al., 2009). Since the accuracy of navigational data obtained during these cruises is outdated and sample coverage is unevenly distributed and sparse in many parts of the license area, BGR has started a new exploration program to investigate the German license area according to the rules, regulations and procedures issued by the ISA for the exploration of Mn nodules in the Area.

The most exciting frontier in Ocean Technology is represented by a new class of Marine Bioproducts, the source of which lies in marine microorganisms. The microorganisms include microalgae, bacteria and archaea. These organisms represent very diverse, adaptive life forms and in their metabolic processes use carotenoids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, ultraviolet blockers, as well as a wide range of enzymes that are pivotal in the production of new pharmaceuticals and nutraceutical products. These organisms cover a wide spectrum of ocean environments, from the shallow to the deep, from the normal to the extreme. The technological challenge is in the identification of candidate organisms, in the screening for valuable enzymes, and in the industrial production. A whole new range of collecting strategies involving submersibles, ROVs and in situ ocean floor instrumentation is emerging. New non-polluting industrial chemical processes involving the use of photobioreactors and extremophile bioreactors for breeding and monitoring these organisms in neo-farming technology is emerging. The commercial value of these candidate products is immense, as is the range of potential organisms. The dimension of this new industry is global. The Marine Bioproducts Engineering Center (MarBEC), funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), has been established at the University of Hawaii. The vision of MarBEC is to develop a seamless research system stretching from undergraduate education to industry for the purposes of producing valuable marine bioproducts outside of the normal chemical factory production. MarBEC is uniquely and strategically placed in the Pacific to explore, find, and adapt highly bioactive marine micro-organisms found in the tropical ocean. Results of the R/V Sonne Cruise (Edison) to the Tabar-Feni Arc from March 11 to April 5, 1994, a joint German-Canadian research cruise aboard the vessel R/V Sonne, undertook detailed mapping of the Tabar-Feni island chain, Papua New Guinea. The Tabar-Feni chain is host to several large porphyry stocks and epithermal gold deposits, including the giant Ladolam gold deposit on the island of Lihir (minimum 19 million oz. Au). The principal objective of the cruise was to map the seafloor in the vicinity of recently active alkaline volcanic islands in the Tabar-Feni chain and to characterize the tectonic setting of large high-level porphyry and epithermal gold deposits in the region. Additional work was carried out on shallow-water hot springs associated with mineralized geothermal systems on the volcanic islands. Complete sets of 1:50,000 scale (20-m contour) maps of the seafloor were produced for each of the four island groups (Feni, Tanga, Lihir, Tabar). The Lihir group was the most active and the most interesting. At least 4 (and probably 6 or 7), previously unknown volcanic cones were discovered within about 10 miles south of Lihir. The volcanoes are clearly very young and appear to have erupted along extensional faults produced by regional plate rotation. This recent volcanic activity appears to reflect recent forearc extension and represents the southward propagation of volcanic activity towards New Ireland. One volcanic cone at 1,490 m water depth is hydrothermally active, with very large areas of diffuse venting (100-200 m across), densely populated by beds of giant clams (probably calyptogena). Other vent-specific fauna are also present, including crabs, snails, sulfide worms, scale worms, limpettes, etc. The clam beds sit on a crust of hydrothermally baked and indurated, sulfidic, hyaloclastite-rich muds. The mineralization consists mainly of fine-grained disseminated pyrite and amorphous Fe-sulfides. A second, much larger cone at a depth of 1,070 m is capped by massive vesicular lavas which are intensely fractured and mineralized. ?ORE? is defined as ?mineral/s that can be mined at a profit?. So, what is ORE at 2,000 m water depth? Is it 5% Copper or 1.8% Nickel/Cobalt? One of the key factors that determine what is ORE, profitable or not, is the cost of mining and extraction. Therefore a determination of ORE requires a commercial and technical appreciation of both sea bed mining equipment and mining options. Perry Slingsby Systems (PSS) have built more remotely operated submarine work vehicles, including 900HP trenching machines, than any other company. With Nautilus Minerals, PSS have been studying a range of deep ocean mining solutions. This paper discusses the commercial and technical issues of various extraction techniques applicable to deep ocean mining from 1,500 m to 5,000 m water depth. Issues such as the rate of extraction, (i.e. tons per hour) is a key economic component and is often constrained by the design and horsepower of the miner. Likewise the design itself of the mining machine and cutting heads can determine the size of material produced which impacts on methods of lifting the ore to surface. Issues such as overburden, sea floor conditions, style of mineralization and physical properties of the ore, obviously affect the selection of appropriate mining machine configuration.

The new ship-submersible system with R/V Ka'imikai-o-Kanaloa as a mothership and the PISCES V as the submersible completed its first season of dives. The dives involved deployment of the PISCES V in the Hawaiian Islands between the months of July and October 1996. Submersible deployments up to depths of 2,000 meters in sea states up to a high three were made. The new hook and clasp deployment and retrieval connection for PISCES V to the telearm was shown to be an effective system for handling the PISCES V with the A-frame. The shipboard multibeam survey and seawater sampling capability proved to be especially effective in re-mapping the summit of the submarine volcano Loihi following a major volcano-tectonic event and for following the source and configuration of the new hydrothermal plume. Following the earthquake swarm of July 17 to August 18,1996, major changes in the geological setting of Loihi submarine volcano took place. Prior to the seismic event, the geology and structure of the summit of Loihi was represented by a platform-like area 8,100 meters long and 5,400 meters wide enclosed by the 1,200-meter depth contour. The summit was characterized by the presence of two prominent pit craters and eastern and western crater located at water depths of 1,100 and 1,370 meters, respectively. A hydrothermally active volcanic cone, named Pele's Vents, was located at a depth of 960 at the southern edge of the summit. The floor of the summit of Loihi was largely covered by prismatic talus, with interstitial hydrothermal clays. Pillow and tube lavas with volcanic cones 5 to 50 meters high were exposed along the axes of the southern and northern rift zones. The inner margin of the summit displayed fissures and normal faults with the downthrown component towards the center of the summit. The pre-earthquake structural data suggest a pre-caldera structural stage for Loihi. Maximum sustained hydrothermal activity observed on Loihi over the past 10 years existed at Pele's Vents with other sporadic venting occurs along the summit platform and along the south rift. Following the earthquake swarm, the hydrothermally saturated Pele's Vents cone gave way and slid into the inner pit crater. Subsequently, the observed above- bottom hydrothermal plume source deepened from 960 to 1,160 meters, possibly emanating from the same intrusive heat source as Pele's Vents. The observed inward collapse of the summit structures and subsequent opening of fissures gave rise to diffuse venting from the newly formed caldera-like depression with the bottom-hugging hydrothermal pool located at depth between 1,250 and 1,220 meters at the sites of the pit craters.

Ferromanganese oxyhydroxide crusts (Fe-Mn crusts) precipitate out of cold ambient seawater onto hard-rock surfaces at water depths of about 600-4000 m throughout the ocean basins. Fe-Mn crusts concentrate most elements in the Periodic Table above their mean concentration in the earth's crust (continental plus oceanic crust), except for the major rock-forming oxides and also notably gold and palladium. Tellurium is concentrated greater than any other element relative to its earth's crust mean (about 1 ppb). For example, mean contents of the elements heretofore known to be most enriched in crusts, Mo, Tl, Sb, Co, Mn, Bi, As, Se, and Pb are enriched 100 to 1000 times over their earth's crust mean, whereas the mean Te content in Fe-Mn crusts is enriched about 50,000 times. However, the distribution of Te in the earth is poorly known. Estimates of the mean Te content of the earth's crust range from 0.36 to 10 ppb, with 1 ppb being the most commonly cited mean content (compilations in Levinson, 1974 and Govett, 1983). If we took the highest estimate of 10 ppb, then Te would be enriched in Fe-Mn crusts five times more than the next most enriched element, or 5000 times the estimated maximum mean earth's crust.

Two principal types of the hydrothermal fields in Atlantic - axial and off-axis - could be established based on their structural setting in the rift zone of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) (Figure1). The first (axial) type is represented by five high- and three low-temperature hydrothermal sites (Table 1). All of these fields are connected with young axial effusive volcanism and related to large linear volcanic ridges or central volcanoes at the inner floor of the rift valley. The hydrothermal activity here is controlled by the intersection between longitudinal magma feeding faults and transverse weakened zones characterized by high permeability. [ ] The hydrothermal sites of the second (off-axis) type (such as Rainbow, TAG, 24°30?N, Logatchev, newly discovered 13°N (Figure 2) and possibly 16°48?N sites) are related to large tectonic dislocations forming marginal scarps of the rift valley as well as transverse discontinuities.

Brothers volcano (34°51.7?S, 179°03.6?E) is a large caldera volcano that forms part of the active Kermadec arc south of 32° S, NE of New Zealand. It is an elongate edifice striking NW-SE that is ~11-13 km long by 7-8 km across. The caldera has a basal diameter of 3-3.5 km and is surrounded by 350-450 m high walls with the floor 1,850 m deep. A volcanic cone of dacite composition rises 350 m from the caldera floor and partially coalesces with the southern caldera wall. Much of the caldera construction and the location of the hydrothermal vent sites are controlled by intersecting basement structures. Three hydrothermal sites have been recognized at Brothers; NW caldera, SE caldera and cone. Multiple hydrothermal plumes were mapped from the bottom of the caldera upwards to a depth of 900 m and originate from two of the sites; one on the NW caldera wall the other atop the cone. Analyses of these plumes show that the two vent sites are chemically distinct. The cone site itself hosts three distinct vent fields (summit, upper flank, NE flank) that in 1999 had plumes (mainly from the summit) containing relatively high concentrations of gas with a shift of -0.27 pH units (proxy for CO2) and H2S concentrations up to 4,250 nM, particulate Cu (PCu) of 3.4 nM, total dissolvable Fe (TDFe) of 4,720 nM, TDMn up to 260 nM and Fe/Mn values between 4.4 and 18.2. However, in 2002 plumes from the summit vent field had noticeably lower concentrations of PCu (0.3 nM), TDFe (175 nM), and Fe/Mn values of 0.8, although similar TDMn (220 nM) and shift in pH (-0.22) suggesting a state of flux for this site. By contrast, plumes originating from the NW caldera site have much less gas with a pH shift of -0.09 units and no detectable H2S, TDFe up to 955 nM, TDMn up to 150 nM, and Fe/Mn values of 6.4, and have not changed their composition over the same three year interval indicating a more chronic hydrothermal system. Plume d3He results show helium is decoupled from more near-surface vent fluid sources although a shift in R/Ra values from 6.1 ± 0.5 in 1999 for the combined vent sites to 7.2 ± 0.1 in 2002 indicates a less radiogenic input of helium over three years, suggestive of a greater magmatic input to the system.

In the quest of studying the assigned blocks of seafloor for deep water mining, each member country of the ISA is thirsty for accurate information as to the level of resources available. Manganese nodules represent a large portion of the resources and are as precious as they are hard to locate and harvest. Resolving such challenges is what drives the technology development and yields instruments and products capable of serving this field of research. This presentation will study how manufactures of oceanographic instruments have pushed the technology envelop to in order to transform a collection of sensors and instruments into a seamless and adapted assembly working to serve the researcher and prospector in the challenging field they operate. Deep water data collection is characterized by the following challenges: ? Deployment, recovery and handling of the vehicle ? Producing high resolution at great distances ? Positioning that data with accuracy to relocate Teledyne Marine will present the work performed in its engineering laboratories to produce sub systems and systems now capable of delivering key information necessary to the proper cataloguing and exploitation of deep water mineral mining. Understanding and controlling the alternative resources available to each country will allow better management of current traditional land based minerals.

"Due to rising prices and increasing demand of raw materials over the last years, marine mineral resources including manganese nodules have become a focus of study for industry and science. Marine ferromanganese nodules consist of micro-layers of different chemical and mineralogical composition which incorporate metals of high economic interest (Ni, Cu, Co, Zn, Mo, Li, rare earth elements; Hein & Koschinsky, 2015).The varying composition of the layers depends on different growth processes, such as hydrogenetic (metal precipitation from the water column under oxic conditions; Mn/Fe = 3), diagenetic (metal precipitation from the sediment pore water) under oxic (Mn/Fe 3-10) or suboxic (Mn/Fe = 10) conditions; (Wegorzewski & Kuhn, 2014) or hydrothermal (metal precipitation from low-temperature hydrothermal fluids; Kuhn et al., 2003).METHODSIn this study, manganese nodules from three different locations of the Atlantic Ocean (Galicia Bank; Vema-Fracture-Zone and Brazilian Basin) were analyzed for their geochemical and mineralogical composition. Detailed information about the samples are given in table 1. The geochemical and mineralogical composition of bulk nodules were determined by XRF, ICP-MS/OES as well as XRD and the single micro-layers by high resolution analyses with electron microprobe and LA-ICP-MS."

"Nine Fe-Mn nodules from the extensive nodule field in the east of Campbell Plateau of southwest Pacific Ocean beneath the Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC) and Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) were analyzed for the 10Be/9Be dating by AMS (Accelerator Mass Spectroscopy) at IGNS, New Zealand.Several types of nodule morphology were identified including distinctive discoidal forms with overgrowths resulting possibly from overcrowding and partial sediment burial. Five principal nodule facies were also recognized by location and occurrence (Fig. 1) (Wright et al., 2005). Fe-Mn nodules show various concentric internal growth textures, such as, cuspates, large parabolic cuspates, pseudo-columnar, columnar, globular, and laminated, which vary even in a nodule with hydrogenetic, early diagenetic, or mixed origin. Each texture shows micro-textural varieties and different mineralogy and/or chemistry. The genesis of each internal texture was indicated by the REE patterns, the mineralogy of Mnoxides, and the Mn/Fe ratios."

A recently completed series of projects funded by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the U.S. Minerals Management Service was designed to assess the distribution of heavy minerals on the inner continental shelf adjacent to Virginia. These projects indicate that a suite of minerals of both strategic and economic interest is present. Analysis of several hundred grab and core samples shows that zircon, monazite, and titanium minerals (ilmenite, rutile, and leucoxene) occur in quantities that probably warrant further study by the mineral industry. Furthermore, side-scan sonography and shallow seismic profiles have provided information on the thickness and areal extent of the mineral-bearing sands. Possible development of the resource is enhanced by a potential use of offshore sand for beach nourishment. The results of the preliminary studies have been presented in open-file publications and oral reports in order that the mineral industry might have an up to date basis upon which to consider more exploratory work. Much of the effort south of the mouth of Chesapeake Bay was made in cooperation with and enhanced by an independent study of sand resources for beach nourishment and other needs. Preliminary review of the quantitative analyses of the heavy-mineral content of several hundred samples demonstrates that the distribution of high concentrations is non-uniform. A concept of plate-tectonic controls for the formation of seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) deposits in back-arc settings was established by Franklin et al. (2005). According to Franklin et al. (2005), a consequence of extension and rifting is subsidence, thinning of the crust, and the rise of hot, athenospheric mantle into the base of the crust. Underplating of the crust by mafic magmas results in low-pressure partial melting of the hydrated crust at a <15-km depth, and the generation of felsic anhydrous melts. The rapid ascent of hot felsic melts, along with mantle-derived mafic melts, results in bimodal volcanism that characterizes rift and volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits (VMS) environments. The rapid and focused advection of the magmatic heat within the rift to the near-surface environment which are required to sustain vigorous long-lived VMS hydrothermal systems. Faults within rift environments may also allow seawater to penetrate into subvolcanic intrusions and mix with magmatically generated metalliferous fluid or allow a direct magmatic contribution from shallow crustal level (3–12 km) magma chambers (Franklin et al., 2005, and references therein). In addition, the caldera-forming processes are favorable for the formation of VMS deposits and the focused high heat flow and cross- stratal structural permeability that is restricted in time and space to caldera development provides an explanation for the clustering of VMS deposits and their restriction to specific time-stratigraphic intervals and structures in the evolution of submarine central volcanic complexes (Franklin et al., 2005, and references therein). The concept is persuasive, although it is based on a series of logically constructed reviews mainly focused on ancient on-land deposits.

"Ferromanganese nodules are again of interest because of their high concentrations of Ni, Co, Cu as well as REE. With regards to an operational underwater mining industry, one of the main questions and important requests is to finding a method that can predict the abundance of nodules with high accuracy within reasonable time spans, without many requirements for ground truth data; and all these on an operational scale and ideally automated. In this regard, we present results of a study based on the combination of highresolution multibeam and optical data acquired by an AUV using specific machine learning techniques to reveal a detailed distribution of the Mn-nodules in correlation to the seafloor terrain. The accuracy of the method employed and results gained were validated and approved through comprehensive statistical analysis and by comparison to box-core data.Study AreaOur study area (AUV survey block G77) is located in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) (Eastern Central Pacific Ocean), an area that has been receiving international research and industrial attention for many years already (e.g. McKelvey et al., 1979; Bernhard and Blissenbach, 1988, von Stackelberg and Beiersdorf, 1991, Jeong et al. 1996). Block G77 covers an area of 9.5km2 in a depth between -4478m and -4536m. The area is characterised by gentle slopes 0-5° (0-3° in most of the area and only in the outer parts of the Block slopes can exceed 5°). The seafloor is characterised by moderate to low rugosity, the only exception being a small area in the eastern part, where sub-recent smallscale volcanic activity created 15 cone-shaped morphological features of up to 55m height and 150m width that are clustered in an area of 700 x 380m (Figure 1)."

Detailed geological studies using side scan sonar, bottom sampling and piston cores along the Rio Grande do Sul inner continental shelf and coastline indicate the occurrence of elongate deposits of calcareous shells fragments containing high calcium carbonate content. On the inner shelf these deposits lie at a depth between 15 and 50 meters and have been interpreted as ancient shorelines. They occupy an area of 965 km2 with a economic potential of 1 billion tons. Chemical analyses indicate a mean composition of 34.8% of calcium; 0.16 ppm of fluoride. According to the regional economy such composition make it highly recommended for a variety of uses including poultry feed and cement.

The chemical composition of the nodules varies with the type of manganese minerals and the size and characteristics of their nucleus, but those who have an economic interest have the following composition: Mn 29%, Fe 6% Si 5%, Al 3%, Ni 1.4%, Cu 1.3%, Co 0.25%, Na 1.5%, Ca 1.5%, Mg 0.5%, K 0.5%, Ti 0.2 0.2% and Ba 0.2% (Morgan, 2000; ISA, 2002). The Pacific Rim is an area of abundant occurrence of polymetallic nodules (Glasby et al., 1980; Morgan, 2000). According to these authors, the Pacific sea floor of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) is one of the most interesting areas in regard to the genesis of polymetallic nodules. Their abundance in the ocean floor is very variable, as there are places where they cover more than 70% of the ocean floor. The nodules can be found at any depth, but the highest concentrations are between 4000 and 6000m (Morgan et al., 1993). In studies conducted in the EEZ of the Mexican Pacific are those made within the project "Research on the origin, process and distribution of minerals in the Pacific ocean floor in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Mexico". Within this project Rosales (1989) conducted studies on the origin, process and distribution of polymetallic nodules, finding that a number of processes give origin to nodules, being diagenesis one of the main mechanisms of elements that contribute to the nodules. Besides hydrothermal processes that are carried near the East Pacific Rise at 21° N, inputs are contributing to the nodules metallic elements and sediments, especially in regions close to the dorsal, as a greater influence hydrogenetic processes occurs westward (Rosales and Carranza, 1990). In 1993, after cruise MIMAR II, Carranza and Rosales refer that metals such as Cu, Co, Ni, Sn, Fe, Mg, Pb, Zn and Ba may have a relationship with the East Pacific hydrothermal activity and sea currents carry these metals in solution to the Clarion-Clipperton fracture area, where there are hydrogenic metals sources (Al, Fe and Mn).

Ifremer, on behalf of the French government, holds an Exploration Contract with the ISA for polymetallic nodules in the CCFZ. As part of its exploration activities, the NODULE (2015) cruise was conducted to acquire a 50 m resolution bathymetric coverage of the eastern sectors of the Contract. In 2017, Ifremer initiated an update of the Contract’s mineral resource estimate. Metal grades and nodule abundance were modelled using ordinary kriging. The inferred mineral resource is 436 Mt (wet) of polymetallic nodules at an average abundance of 10.7 kg/m² with a cut-off grade of 7 kg/m². Based on the geological data, seamounts, sedimentary basins and steep slopes contain no nodules. Technical studies of most of the contractors have determined that nodule collectors could not maneuver on slopes above 5 to 10°. Thus, Ifremer has selected a quite conservative slope threshold of 7 % (about 4°) and a backscatter threshold of -29.5 dB to delineate nodule-free areas. This has a significant impact on the resource estimate, as about 54 % of the eastern Contract areas are excluded. Ifremer, on behalf of the French government, holds an Exploration Contract with the ISA for polymetallic nodules in the CCFZ. As part of its exploration activities, the NODULE (2015) cruise was conducted to acquire a 50 m resolution bathymetric coverage of the eastern sectors of the Contract. In 2017, Ifremer initiated an update of the Contract’s mineral resource estimate. Metal grades and nodule abundance were modelled using ordinary kriging. The inferred mineral resource is 436 Mt (wet) of polymetallic nodules at an average abundance of 10.7 kg/m² with a cut-off grade of 7 kg/m². Based on the geological data, seamounts, sedimentary basins and steep slopes contain no nodules. Technical studies of most of the contractors have determined that nodule collectors could not maneuver on slopes above 5 to 10°. Thus, Ifremer has selected a quite conservative slope threshold of 7 % (about 4°) and a backscatter threshold of -29.5 dB to delineate nodule-free areas. This has a significant impact on the resource estimate, as about 54 % of the eastern Contract areas are excluded.
