Introduction Mineral wool may be defined as "rock, slag, or glass fibres made by a process of melting and blowing by steam or air, containing a minimum of oil and unfiberized material" (U.S. Bureau of Standards CS 117-44). The earliest production of the material was in Wales, about one hundred years ago. In the United States, the industry daces from 1870 when a plant, using slag as raw material, was established in Greenfield, New Jersey. It was not until 1897, however, that large-scale production was commenced on this continent at a plant in Alexandria, Indiana, which utilized rock from nearby deposits. Today, mineral wool is manufactured in many parts of the United States and Canada, the plants for the most part being in close proximity to deposits of suitable rock or to sources of slag. In the United States there are some seventy-five producers with a total annual capacity of nearly one million tons of wool. In Canada, in 1946, eleven manufacturers produced about fifty million square feet of batt-type mineral wool insulation material. Mineral wool is, perhaps, the most efficient of all heat-insulating materials and, moreover, it is fireproof, extremely durable, and insect- proof. Its high efficiency is due to the very low thermal conductivity of the fibres themselves and to the fact that the produce as marketed contains up to 90 per cent non-conducting air space. Depending on the degree of compression of the fibres in the manufactured product, the specific gravity ranges from 2 lb. to 10 lb. per cubic foot. "INTRODUCTION On February 1, 1962, after five years of exploration and research, Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation announced that they would develop the Adams Mine. Plant construction began immediately and in December of 1964 the first shipment of pellets arrived at J & L's blast furnaces in Pittsburgh. J & L continued to operate the property through its wholly owned subsidiary, Jones & Laughlin Mining Company, Ltd., until August of 1971 when it was sold to Dominion Foundries and Steel, Limited of Hamilton. Dofasco engaged Cliffs of Canada, a subsidiary of Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company, to manage the operation of the property.SUMMARY:The Adams Mine is a one million tons per year iron ore pellet operation located in the Boston Township Iron Range, approximately seven miles southeast of Kirkland Lake, Ontario. The property includes 5,300 acres in which eight areas suitable for open pit mining have been outlined. It was estimated that the reserves in these out lined areas are sufficient to produce 30 million tons of high grade iron ore pellets.The ore 'consists of fine grained magnetite with alternating layers of chert and is mined by conventional open pit methods. This extremely hard and abrasive ore averages about 20 percent magnetic iron, and has a ratio of concentration of 3. 9 /1. Presently, mining operations are confined to two pits with a third one being developed for operations to begin in 1973.The run-of-mine ore is crushed and ground and then concentrated by magnetic separation and flotation to a concentrate grade of 68 percent magnetic iron. The concentrate is agglomerated by a grate-kiln pelletizing process and shipped by rail to Dofasco's blast furnaces in Hamilton and to Jones & Laughlin's furnaces in Pittsburgh."

Information and communication technology (ICT) is seen as a key source of future productivity improvements in mines. The information technology infrastructure (ITI) necessary to achieve these productivity improvements will come in the form of data integrated from multiple source systems throughout the mining value chain. Two pure approaches are available: supplier-controlled or operations controlled data structures; each strategy has its own advantages and disadvantages. Case studies involving the South African mining industry are used to demonstrate the advantages of using hybrid-controlled data structures. Depending on the level of operational control, new skills are also necessary to be learnt by mining professionals including: information engineering; creating consistent and quality data; and process improvement techniques that use the integrated data for improving the operation.

Within the framework of the EU Existing Substance (93/793/EEC) and REACH regulations EC/1907/2006), the copper industry initiated in 2000 a comprehensive Voluntary Risk Assessment of copper and several copper compounds. The Italian Government's Istituto Superiore di Sanità, reviewed the process and reports on behalf of the European Commission. Copper exposure levels to man and the environment from production of copper anodes and cathodes, copper powders and copper chemicals as well as fabrication and use of semi-fabrication products and down stream user products were collected across Europe. Environmental and human health effects data were obtained from literature as well as novel research programs and used to deduct safe threshold

"The TankCell® 300 forced air flotation cell designed and built by Outotec, with active volume of over 300 m3, was installed at Codelco’s Chuquicamata concentrator in September 2008. After that, a program was conducted, where the new cell was tested against the plant’s existing flotation cells of type TankCell® 160, with an active volume of over 160 cubic meters.Testing program was exhaustive and detailed. Grade-recovery curves for each setup were reported, along with recoveries by particle size. Secondly, operational characteristics like air feed and froth height setpoints, and power consumption are compared side-by-side. As the third topic, gas dispersion characterization included velocity mapping, holdup, bubble size and bubble surface area flux operating range. The fourth area of interest was the retention time distribution (RTD) of the 300 and 160 m3 cells in comparison. A detailed campaign using radioactive tracer tests was conducted to clarify this.All of the investigations mentioned above are reported in separate papers for more detail. The aim of this paper is to collect the key findings, and present them in real terms, always referring to operability and metallurgy of the cells. It is destined for people designing new plants and to those improving and expanding existing ones. The most frequently heard question is: will the new large cells operate at same efficiency as the smaller ones. In short, the answer is: NO. They operate at improved efficiency!INTRODUCTIONIn the last two decades of minerals processing, there have been three dominant trends of development in the flotation technology: equipment scale-up, cell characterization and circuit modeling. Equipment scale-up has been rapid in the past two decades. In the year 1990, the largest flotation cell in use was 50 cubic meters of size. This year, 300 cubic meters is the largest installed cell. Characterization of flotation equipment and circuits is a very popular subject nowadays and has helped many operations to improve their recoveries through better control strategies, for example by using optimized air feed and level control profiles (Gorain, 2005), (Doucet, Gomez, Finch, 2006), or through better maintenance (Coleman, Urtubia, Alexander, 2006). Characterization work is closely linked to circuit modeling. The aim is to produce sufficient amount of data to allow reliable model building. These models are then used to design new circuits and to improve existing ones. So in summary, these three lines of development have slightly different aims – from capital and operational cost to performance optimization. Ultimately, they converge in the same end result – maximizing the profitability of the operation. Following chapters will summarize the extensive test work and scientific studies at Codelco Chuquicamata. The aim was to compare a TankCell® 300 cell, with nominal volume of 300 m3, against two TankCell® 160 machines, with 160 m3 volume in each. The work should yield answers to questions: does the larger cell produce similar results – is the scale-up successful?"

Squirrel cage induction motors are the mostly used motors at present. Currently, the rotors of the squirrel cage induction motors are produced by aluminum die casting technique with the advantages of low cost of rotors. It is well known that the copper’s electrical conductivity is around 40% higher than that of aluminum. If copper is used to replace the current widely used aluminum in rotors, the total loss of motors will be reduced, hence increasing the overall motor efficiency. Copper rotors can be used to produce high efficiency and even super premium efficiency motors without enlarge the motor frame size. Considering the huge quantity of motors, the die casting process is the best solution to produce copper rotor with economic cost. Because of the characteristics of copper, it is difficult to produce copper rotors by casting similar to that done in aluminum rotors. In order to improve the die casting quality of copper rotor, a new tooling structure was developed and the casting process of copper rotor was simulated and analyzed by Any-casting software. The filling process, solidification process, inner gas distribution and residual melt modulus were analyzed. It was found that the design of symmetrical runner and inner runner on both sides was helpful to reduce the impact of molten copper to the cavity surface during the filling process. The use of Slag traps array can reduce die casting defects inside the end rings. That will be helpful to improve the rotor quality. INTRODUCTION Squirrel-cage AC induction motors are most widely used in the world. In 2017, the total installed capacity of AC motors in China has reached more than 1.2 billion kW, and the annual power consumption accounts for about 60% of the total national electricity consumption. To improve the efficiency of squirrel-cage motor will be helpful to energy conservation and environment protection. There are several ways to improve efficiency of induction motors, using copper rotor is one of the most effective solutions. Findings indicated that chemical characteristics of fine tailings (water chemistry, degree of dispersion) do not have a significant impact on their compressibility behaviour and have only a small influence at high void ratio (low effective stress). The biggest advantage of non-caustic fine tailings and treating caustic fine tailings with coagulant is an increased initial settlement rate and slightly increased hydraulic conductivity at higher void ratios. Thereafter, compressibility and hydraulic conductivity is governed by effective stress.

"Seven lithologic units, informally characterized, were recognized in the vicinity of the Montauban orebody. The first five lie in stratigraphic order. From structural bottom to structural top these are: (1) grey composite gneiss; (2) dark grey quartz-biotite gneiss; (3) quartz-biotite-garnet gneiss hosting several calcareous, aluminous and magnesian members and gold mineralization; (4) light grey quartz-muscovite-(sericite)-biotite gneiss; and (5) metabasafts. The last two intrude the sequence: (6) amphibolite dykes and (7) pegmatite veins. The orebody lies on the inverted limb of an overturned synform verging to the west with the metabasafts marking the core of the fold. As the foliation is folded, this fold is attributed to deformation ""D2""; deformation ""DI"" being responsible for the formation of the foliation. A late brittle deformation developed shear zones with probable strike-slip motions. The refined stratigraphy and the identification of the structural position of the orebody provide new tools for regional interpretation and prospecting.RESUMESept unités lithologiques ont été définies informeffement à proximité du gisement de Montauban. "With energy costs increasing and ore grades diminishing, the role of preconcentration in hard-rock mining operations has gained greater interest. Dense medium separation is a process that can be conducted at particle sizes from 250 to 0.50 mm with high separation efficiency, depending on liberation characteristics of the valuable minerals. Pilot-plant case studies conducted at the SGS Lakefield site are presented, including mineral systems such as spodumene, sulfide-bearing gold ores, and complex sulfide ores. These case studies demonstrate that, for amenable ores, mass rejection of 20–60% is possible while maintaining recoveries of greater than 90%.RÉSUMÉ Au vu de la hausse des coûts liés à l’énergie et du déclin de la teneur des minerais, le rôle de la préconcentration dans les exploitations minières en roche dure présente un intérêt croissant. La séparation (ou concentration) en milieu dense est un processus pouvant être mené sur des calibres de grains de 250 à 0.50 mm avec un rendement élevé de séparation, en fonction des caractéristiques de libération des constituants des minéraux métallifères. Sont présentées dans cet article des études de cas menées dans des usines pilotes du site de Lakefield de SGS, lesquelles incluent des systèmes de minéraux tels que le spodumène, les minerais aurifères sulfurés et les minerais sulfurés complexes. Preconcentration has been practiced in the industry for many years, and is gaining greater interest as the industry copes with processing lower grade, more difficult ores, which typically require finer grind sizes and incur higher energy costs.The benefits of preconcentration are:• lower mining costs, which allows for nonselective mining;• lower process capital and operating costs (e.g., resulting from reduced grinding, flotation, and fines disposal stages);• increased ore reserves, which provides the potential to treat lower grade ore;• increased mine production without expansion of the existing plant or concentrator;• reduced overall tailings impoundment by converting the reject into a byproduct (e.g., underground backfill or aggregate);• improved efficiency of downstream processes (e.g., silica removal in electric arc furnace feed, removal of softer sliming minerals prior to grinding);• potential application to brownfield operations and greenfield projects; and• a “green” process option, which reduces processing energy consumption;– reduces mill feed;– increases stage metal recovery (higher grade feed);– increases mill metal output per tonne processed;– reduces surface plant, tailings dump, and tailings pond requirements because the plant has a small footprint and can be installed underground; and– can be applied to retreatment of old tailings dumps to recover metal values and reduce environmental impacts (e.g., dissolved metal runoff, acid drainage)."

It is a peculiar anomaly that while the world uses the term "rich as a gold mine" as the superlative figure of speech descriptive of wealth, the shares of gold mines are not as popular investments in America as certain of them should be. One of the most able of Manhattan's bankers is a director in an investment trust with a portfolio the value of which has gone the way of other such portfolios. Luckily a couple of years ago a few hundred shares of Homestake were purchased, and since then the trust has not only received therefrom satisfactory dividends but has benefitted from a large appreciation in their value. At each directors' meeting, however, the banker in question, Cato-like, suggests the sale of these shares, gold shares being, in his opinion, too speculative to be included in the portfolio of any trust. A short time ago the financial pages of one of our great metropolitan papers featured an article listing the corporations still paying dividends at the 1929 rate. Gold-mining shares were, the article stated, excluded, although in reality every gold mine on the New York Stock Exchange paid higher dividends in 1932 than in 1929. This 'Alice in Wonderland' treatment of the gold-mining shares is admittedly a bit confusing to those of us who believe that the shares of certain gold-mining companies have a rightful place in any well diversified portfolio. It should, however, here be recorded that whereas, fifty years ago, in America, gold-mining shares were considered by the public as instruments of nefarious gambling, now shares of the better gold mines are sought by astute investors. In England for well over a generation their value as sound investments has been widely recognized.

"A380 alloy has been widely employed to produce thin-wall components via high pressure die casting (HPDC). During HPDC processing, there is a significant problem of property variation even with the very stable and precision automated casting procedure. The enlarged variation lowers the component performance and affects the steady and uniform property distribution along the whole component. In this study, high shear melt conditioning technology was developed and applied to the melt prior to pouring into the shot sleeve. Experimental results show that with application of intensive melt shearing, the variation of elongation was decreased from 21.8to 13.9%, and yield strength variation was reduced from5.5to 3.6%. The improved property variation is attributed to enhanced nucleation both in shot sleeve and the die-cavity, and to the improved distribution of porosity and secondary phases as a benefit of high shear induced grain refinement. With application of high shear, large number of the Spinel phase (MgAl2O4) particles with double size distribution in average diameter of 80and 300nm were formed. Due to the good orientation relationship and small misfit between alpha Al and MgAl2O4, the particles act as the effective nuclei in shot sleeve and die cavity, respectively.INTRODUCTIONA380 alloy had been widely used for produce automotive components by cold chamber high pressure die casting(HPDC) processing, due to its relative good mechanical properties and cast ability performance, and more important most of A380 ingots were produced by recycled Al alloys. Therefore, to promote utility of A380 will contribute to reducing emission of CO2and to the lightweight of automotive industry as well. When cold chamber HPDC was employed to produce the components, the mechanical properties of A380 alloy always have a distribution range (named variation herein), or in other words the properties were not stable. The reason was ascribed to the typical solidification characteristics occurred in HPDC processing. During HPDC processing, there are three steps of melt movement. The first step is that the melt was poured into shot sleeve at temperature of about 680°C, in which shot sleeve was preheated by few shots of melt filling, or by heater. During step one, the first solidification of melt was happened in shot sleeve and about 20% solid made of coarse a-Al grains was formed(Li, Xiong, & Guo, 2016).Such kind of grains will retain in the final products and deteriorate the properties variation. The second step is that the melt was forced moving forward slowly by plunger at about 0.2–0.3m/s until the liquid melt front to the inner gate of mold. The third step is that the melt moved very fast to complete the filling of die cavity and refilling the solidification shrinkage by fast movement of plunger about 2–3m/s. The second solidification was occurred in die cavity and fine a-Al grains will be formed by high cooling rate at about 500–1000°C/s. From the solidification point of view, the grain size was dominated by nucleation and growth. When HPDC was employed to produce components, the melt quality becomes the priority factor to control the solidification process as the other casting parameters were kept at the same."

Introductory The following pages present the results of field investigations, laboratory and commercial tests, drilling, surveying, and preliminary development of the refractory clays which have been discovered recently in the township of Kipling, at the foot of Long rapids on the west side of the Mattagami river about 57 miles north of Kapuskasing and approximately 7 miles north of Smoky Falls, the terminus of the privately owned railway operated by the Spruce Falls Power and Paper Company, Kapuskasing (see Figure 1). Investigations on the clays of northern Ontario have been carried on over a period of seven years by officers of the Ontario Department of Mines, and I am indebted to the information published by that Department in reports by W. S. Dyer and A. R. Crozier, as well as?by Professor R. J. Montgomery, of the Ceramic Department, University of Toronto. It was, in large measure, the data given in the 37th, 38th, and 42nd Annual Reports of the Ontario Department of Mines that led me to make a personal investigation of the Mattagami River clays, with the result that we now have a commercial undertaking that will develop eventually into an industry of considerable importance in supplying the central manufacturing districts of Canada with refractories that heretofore have been largely imported from the United States. An extract from the 42nd Annual Report of the Department, Part III, 1933, page 75, reads as follows: "As for the refractory clay, the deposits are undoubtedly very large, but what is urgently needed is a deposit near the railway under sufficiently shallow overburden for recovery by stripping'. Having previously made an investigation of the clays adjacent to the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario railway, and these clays proving unsuitable, I turned my attention to the outcrops of refractory clays on the Mattagami river, first reported by Keele in 1919. This area offered possibilities within the economically permissible distance from rail transportation.

Location The Frood ore-body is expressed on surface as a prominent gossan ridge, with a total length of approximately two miles. The original Frood (the old No. 3 mine of the Canadian Copper Company) is at the southwest end of this gossan; adjoining it on the northeast is the Frood Extension (until 1929 the property of i:he Mond Nickel Company), while at the extreme northeast end is the Stobie mine. The first two of these divisions of the ridge form the Frood mine as it is known today.? This lies in lots 6 and 7 of the sixth concession, township of McKim, and is two and a half miles north of the city of Sudbury. The general elevation is 1,000 feet above sea level. The Ore-Body The Frood-Stobie parallel offset(l), as its name implies, has no connection in the field with the main mass of the Sudbury nickel eruptive-a norite. It lies one mile to the southeast of that body, and, in general, parallels it in strike. The ore occurs as a more or less tabular structure in what is known locally as the Sudbury series. They are the oldest rocks of the district, and have been placed by Collins(2) as earlier than the lower Huronian, of pre-Cambrian time. The series is comprised of sediments, volcanics (both acid and basic flows), tuffs, agglomerates, breccias, and basic intrusives, all highly metamorphosed, yet all forming a more or less regular picture. The controlling feature of the area has been the attitude of the sedimentary strata, from which has arisen the present sill-like character of the flow rocks, the basic intrusives, and the ore-body itself.

"Three types of anodic films (unsealed, hot water sealed and agent sealed) were prepared to study the effects of anodizing pores structure on the adhesive bonding performance of AA5754 automotive sheets. The morphology of the anodic films was examined by using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the composition was examined by glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES). The adhesive bonding strength and durability in corrosive environment were investigated by using single lap shear test and salt spray corrosion test (SST), respectively. The results showed that the pores structure could significantly influence the adhesive bonding performance. The unsealed sample showed porous structure and provided high bonding strength, however, the durability was poor in corrosive environment. The hot water sealed sample showed fine and loose hydrated alumin a structure on the surface and provided high durability in corrosive environment, but the bonding strength was low. In contrast, the agent sealed sample provided both high bonding strength and durability in corrosive environment.INTRODUCTIONAdhesively bonded aluminum joints by using adhesives have been widely used for the realization of lightweight design in industrial applications like automotive and aerospace industry[1, 2]. Durable bonds which are capable of taking structural loads can be created due to a careful consideration of the way in which the joint is formed, the type of adhesive and the appropriate treatment of the adherend surfaces prior to bonding[3-6]. Experiences demonstrate that the surface treatment is the most critical step which could not be disregarded, since it is essential to achieve long-term service capability [7].In structural applications, a bonded assembly is expected to maintain a significant load and may be combined with exposure to harsh environmental conditions in its service life. For this purpose, the pretreatment for structural bonding of aluminum alloy must provide not only strong tensile strength and durability but also good corrosion resistance. Chromic acid anodizing (CAA) process provides an anodized layer which has good corrosion resistance while also exhibiting useful adhesion characteristics as well as lacquer coating retaining characteristics[8].However, the use of Cr (VI) is unadvised from a health and environmental point of view since it is toxic and carcinogenic, and this process is gradually limited even prohibited. Boeing's phosphoric acid anodizing(PAA) process provides a more open pore structure allowing penetration of high molecular primers/adhesives[8]and PAA process is the most widely used pre-surface treatment suitable for adhesive bonding between aluminum alloy components. Rahimi et al. demonstrated that nanostructure can be produced by PAA process and is affected by the time of pretreatment and anodizing parameters [9]. Xu et al.investigated the influence of surface energy and roughness on adhesive bonding through PAAprocess and provided improved adhesion performance under certain anodizing parameter[10]. However, PAA process is normally not recommended for a major concern of deterioration of the mechanical performance of the joints as a result of exposure to a wet and corrosive environment. Sulfuric acid anodizing(SAA)process, recently, has been widely used for corrosion protection and good base coating for the adhesion of lacquers in aerospace manufacturing[11]. The good performance is explained by properties such as the porous morphology and high adsorptive power of the oxide film, the chemical and electrical inertness of the anodized layer. Moreover, modified sulfuric acid could also used for adhesive bonding. Lunder et al. found that anodizing in hot sulfuric acid is promising as a simple, very rapid and environmentally friendly pre-treatment for adhesive bonding[12].Saeedikhani et al. studied the process of phosphoric/boric/sulfuric acids anodizing and found it was is a promising pre-treatment for adhesive bon"

Present conventional techniques for primary steelmaking in both integrated and non-integrated plants are outlined. 'Direct reduction' alternatives are reviewed and categorized according to the nature of the product produced, with particular emphasis on the limited number designed to yield steel as the end product. A proposed new technique, referred to as the Sherwood Process, is described in some detail as a new combination of selected features from the prior technology. This process is in-tended to realize, in integrated operations, the result of continuons steelmaking directly from the ore in a single plant and, in non-integrated operations, continuons steel-making from a metallic charge of scrap, sponge iron or pig iron. Prominent features are continuons processing in elongated, horizontal, rotary furnace equipment, controlled direct heating of each process stage and, for the over-all integrated process, a size separation for removal of excess solid reductant and other waste just prior to the melting step. Material and energy balances are presented as well as exemplary cost data. Reasons for selecting this particular combination of process elements are dis-cussed.

The electric smelting of five lowgrade Canadian manganese ores has been investigated at the Mines Branch, Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, Ottawa. Ferromanganese, silkomanganese, and spiegeleisen were produced 1by special smelting processes from these ores since the latter were too low grade to be treated by conventional smelting methods. In one case the results were considered to be sufficiently promising to justify the construction of a pilot plant, by the Company concerned, for the further development of the process.

We are indebted to the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited for the several pictures in this issue showing the progress made in new construction at Tadanac and at Bonnington Falls, B.C. Plate No. 1 shows the down-stream side of the No. 1 hydro-electric station of the West Kootenay Power and Light Co. Limited at Bonnington Falls, on the Kootenay river, at which 17,500 k.v.a. will be developed to meet the requirements of the enlarged zinc and lead refineries at Tadanac. The generators, exciters and switch apparatus were supplied by the Canadian General Electric Company and the step-up transformers by the Canadian Westinghouse Company Limited. The plant throughout was designed, manufactured and erected by Canadians. Plate No. 2 shows the casting room of the new lead-plant and plate No. 3 the new tank-room of the electrolytic lead refinery at Tadanac. These additions will increase the capacity of the lead refinery by some 150 tons daily. The extensions also include practically doubling the zinc plant, and the gold and silver refineries. With the exception of the new stack, all designing construction and installation of the various plants is being done by the Company's own employees at Tadanac. Plate No. 4 shows the progress made in the construction of the new reinforced concrete stack at Tadanac. This stack, of 21 feet inside diameter at the top, will be brick lined and when completed will rise 400 feet above its foundations: the tallest of its kind in the world. The construction is in charge of the Rust Engineering Company of Pittsburgh, Pa. Plate No. 5 is a panorama of the Tadanac smelters and refineries. The photograph was taken from the roof of the lead smelter and gives an excellent idea of the size of the plant and its surroundings. Tadanac produces electrolytic lead, zinc and copper and fine gold and silver. During 1924 the company treated 1,333,523 tons of ore and produced: 161,400,- 769 pounds of lead; 92,197,824 pounds of zinc; l,382,750pounds of copper; 4,074,044 ounces of silver, and 26,976 ounces of gold.
