As trucks become larger and larger, haul roads take on a more significant role in mining costs and economics. The School of Mining at the University of Alberta has compiled a design manual for haul roads using both empirical and theoretical information. One section of this manual deals with the economics of haul road construction. While many mines look only at the construction costs of haul roads, this paper looks at all associated parameters including construction costs, removal costs, timing, truck productivity and width implications. The authors demonstrate the method to determine the most appropriate quality of road for different road conditions and life spans.

THE greatest problem confronting business managers in modern times is not production, but distribution. It would be easy to expand productive output, but it is difficult to find markets for all that is produced. The fundamental source of economic difficulty, in the view of many observers, is a lack of proper balance between productive capacity and consumptive capacity. The studies conducted by the Brookings Institution on the general subject, "The Distribution of Income in Relation to Economic Progress", have led to conclusions of far-reaching significance, which may be summarized briefly as follows: (1) We have never lived beyond our economic means or capacity. (2) We have not been suffering from general overproduction. (3) We have not as yet reached a stage in our economic evolution at which it is possible to provide adequate standards of living for everybody. ( 4) It would require less than a 25 per cent increase in purchasing power among the masses to absorb our full productive capacity. (5) Production-curtailment programmes-whatever their merit in meeting temporary maladjustments-can only lead to national impoverishment. (6) Our inability to find markets adequate to absorb the full output of our productive establishments is explained by the unequal distribution of income and consequent restricted flow of purchasing power through consumptive channels. (7) The slow rate of growth of consumptive demand serves to retard the rate at which new capital is constructed, and hence the rate of economic progress. (8) The primary need is a rapidly expanding total income, and a broader diffusion of this income among the masses of the people. (9) A broader diffusion of income can best be achieved by reducing prices as rapidly as increasing efficiency will permit. That is to say, the benefits of technological progress, mass production, and low unit costs must be promptly passed on to consumers in the form of lower prices-giving more for each dollar.

HighService has developed different equipment using wireless technology and machine vision systems that were specially designed to allow 1) the online determination of the SAG mills liner's service life, 2) the automatic detection of a missing dipper tooth in mineral extraction shovels, 3) the reduction of accident risk potential in the mineral transportation within the mine, and 4) the reduction of collision risk potential between shovels and wheel dozers during mineral extraction. For the development of all these systems at HighService, extensive research has been done in radio frequency and image processing fields. The integration of both technologies with the expert knowledge of the company on the typical harsh environment conditions of the mining industry has led to the development of heavy duty equipment that tolerate the extreme mechanical requirements of SAG mills and electrical mining shovels.

"Most of the secondary ZnO contains fluorine (F) in large quantities. Serious troubles at the zinc electrowinning are occurred by the cathode corrosion caused by F, therefore we developed iron compounds as F-adsorbents used in zinc sulfate solution. The iron compounds can be reused repeatedly as F-adsorbents because they can adsorb/desorb F alternatively depending on the pH. Moreover, if the adsorptive capacity decreases, we can dissolve and re-synthesize them easily. In this paper, results of the experimental process which consists of five steps (leaching, F removal, Cl removal, purification and electrowinning) to produce high purity electrolytic zinc from the secondary ZnO are reported. INTRODUCTIONThe recycle material for zinc, secondary ZnO, contains large amounts of fluorine (F) and chlorine (Cl) which are halogen elements, compared with calcine obtained by roasting of zinc sulfide concentrate. The halogen elements cause adverse effects in the zinc electrowinning process and particularly F causes corrosion of aluminum cathode plates and eventually sticking of electrodeposited zinc and therefore, F concentration in the electrolyte is controlled to less than approximately 20 mg/L. There are several methods to remove F from secondary ZnO, such as leaching with Na2CO3 or NaOH solution [1-2], vaporizing in a rotary kiln by roasting at 1000 to 1200 degrees C [3-4]. However, up to the moment, there has been no effective method for the removal of F from zinc electrolyte and it has been a big obstacle in treatment of secondary ZnO in electrowining of zinc.The authors, therefore, developed an iron compound used as an adsorbent of F in the zinc sulfate solution [5-8]. This iron compound is Akaganeite that has a crystalline structure of ß-FeOOH. Akaganeite is synthesized by neutralization of FeCl3 solution containing a small amount of SO4 2- with Na2CO3. When this iron compound is immersed into weak acidified zinc sulfate solution, F in the solution is adsorbed. F adsorbed in the iron compound is removed by immersing in weak alkaline solution and the iron compound can be reused as F adsorbent."

Dual-energy X-ray transmission (DE-XRT) imaging is known from safety luggage inspections at airports. The use of DE-XRT technology for sorting applications in the primary raw materials industry has been the subject of numerous investigations. Beside other metal ores, X-ray transmission sorting is already used for the preconcentration of tungsten ore, gold ore and coal. The applicability of DE-XRT sorting is limited to ore types where differences in metal concentrations are measurable, based on an interpretation of X-ray images. Metal contents in particles occur in large varieties in terms of concentration, grain sizes, spatial distribution and mineralogy and therefore influence the X-ray absorption. As a result, each ore has to be tested individually for its suitability for DE-XRT sorting. The objective of current research at the Department of Mineral Processing (AMR) at RWTH Aachen University is to assess parameters influencing the detectability of rare earth oxides. Two approaches were followed: (1) Practical test work, based on artificial ore samples of defined compositions and (2) Computer-based simulation of absorption features of identical particle compositions. In total, more than 300 artificial samples of various compositions and metal grades were produced and X-ray images from DE-XRT sorting were analyzed. Results from the DE-XRT sensor were put into correlation with metal grades and particle sizes, to analyze influences and limits on the detectability of rare earth oxides. In addition, a new approach was tested in which the X-ray absorption of particles of various compositions was determined based on a Monte Carlo (MCNP) simulation. During the simulation, similar compositions, as used for the artificial samples, were tested and the X-ray absorption behavior during DE-XRT sorting was determined. A comparison of results from both approaches is used to assess the applicability of the MCNP-simulation for the prediction of the X-ray attenuation behavior during DE-XRT sorting.

The presence of groundwater in the form of large aquifers can have an important influence on investment decisions for underground mines. The design for such mines requires development of special mining methods, and mine dewatering infrastructure to avoid hazards during shaft sinking and underground development. The costs associated with mine drainage control and Mine Dewatering Systems (MDS) are relatively small compared to the huge consequential losses that can occur in case of an uncontrolled inflow and subsequent flooding of the mine. The design of MDS needs consideration of accurate prediction of the maximum uncontrolled inflow rate, availability of the system during an uncontrolled inflow while the inflow is mitigated, and decision on pumping system technology to have capability to operate under water. The research presented in this paper provides a theoretical framework for a reliability based design procedure which takes into account the uncertainty in the estimate of the maximum uncontrolled inflow, performance of the system during the period of an uncontrolled inflow and a methodology to decide on appropriate pumping technology considering the reliability of the system and available underground storage. The reliability based mine design procedure integrates the ideas of Effective Reserve and Hydraulic Reliability Index to come up with a unified methodology for design of Mine Dewatering Systems.

"An analysis of the number of industrial injuries shows that the mining sector is particularly affected, since mining is one of the most dangerous industrial activities in Canada. This has led to numerous inquiries, and supports the need for an in-depth study aiming at the identification of factors responsible for these accidents. One possible factor often pointed at is the small crews incentives and this paper presents a scientific approach applied to check a potential link between bonus and accidents at two mining companies located in northwestern Quebec.The data required to do so were the accidents, the salaries and the number of hours worked at each mining site by the hourly paid personnel for the period from June 1979 to January 1982. The analysis of the results derived from the initial information shows different behaviours of the frequency rate vs the bonus rate at these mines. The number of days lost per accident is independent of the bonus rate at both mine sites, as shown by Khisquare tests on contingency tables.IntroductionA wide variety of opinions has been pinpointed by a survey of the literature related to individual or small crew incentives and industrial accidents in sectors of activity where it applies. In addition, various formulae of mining contracts take place in the industry on one part, and statistics from this sector indicate a high accident frequency rate on the other part. These fact s have lead to this scientific investigation which does isolate the direct impact of the bonus on workers' accidents. This study was undertaken with the full support of the Quebec Metal Mining Association.The conclusions of this preliminary phase of the researchproject are presented for two mining complexes in northwestern Quebec. The procedure is somewhat similar to the approach of the Belmoral Commission, with the underlying assumption that bonus has a direct impact on accidents."

AS is well known, there are large and valuable deposits of coal in British Columbia, both on the mainland and on Vancouver island. These deposits are widely distributed over the Province. The chief sources of supply on the mainland are found in the Fernie and Princeton-Nicola districts and on Vancouver island in the Comox and Nanaimo districts. The coals range from a very high quality bituminous coal to lignite. On the Upper Skeena river there is said to be a very large deposit of anthracite or semi-anthracite, but this field has not been developed. Coal was first discovered in British Columbia on the north end of Vancouver island in the year 1835, but it was not until 1852 that coal mining was seriously undertaken by the Hudson's Bay Company at Nanaimo, where mining has been carried on continuously ever since that date. The production of coal in the Province continued to increase until the year 1910, when the annual output reached its peak at 3,100,000 tons and a total of 7,800 men were employed in the industry. Since 1910, the production has dropped steadily until, in 1934, only 1,347,000 tons of coal were produced and less than 3,000 men were employed. This continued decrease in production has in no way been caused by lack of coal reserves. It has been due entirely to curtailment of markets. I do not propose to discuss coal mining practice in British Columbia, where we have all sorts of mining conditions, including submarine mining. There is no lack of coal supplies for either industrial or domestic purposes, nor is there likely to be any shortage of coal in the Province for many generations. We have our mining troubles, which increase the cost of production, but there are no insuperable difficulties to prevent the extraction of a large and increasing supply of coal. Our main difficulty-in fact our only serious difficulty-is to find a market for our output, and we must consider means which can be evolved not only to conserve our existing markets but also to expand them, at any rate within the boundaries of Canada. I will therefore confine my remarks chiefly to the all-important factor of Markets for our coal.

For the purpose of reservoir-performance calculations a balance can be made between the materials with-in the reservoir and the production from the reservoir. The material balance equation, a relationship which holds under or near equilibrium conditions, has been used in many forms by the Petroleum Engineer for the determination of initial oil-in-place in the reservoir and the calculation of performance into the future. One of the more recent methods developed by Tracy, utilizes a modified form of the Schilthuis material balance. "The pilot scale extraction of gold with a brine of sodium chloride and bromide at 30 ºC, in an atmosphere of halogens at atmospheric pressure, leads to gold chloride with 95% gold recovery. The use of dilute hypohalites (1 – 3%) instead of free halogens, which is strong enough to oxidize hypobromite into bromine, simplifies the recycling of halogens by electrolysis. With the recycling of water and brine, the regeneration of hypohalites and with a barren solid that is inert and stable. The Nichromet Extraction technology is a green process where the protection of the environment does not preclude profitability.INTRODUCTIONThe use of chlorides for the extraction of gold predates the discovery of chlorine by Scheele in 1774. In the Plattner chlorination process (Christy, 1888) sodium chloride and copper salt were used to promote gold recovery by amalgamation with variable results. The introduction of the cyanide technology in 1889 has led to a general use of this method for gold recovery. In the last decades, a return to chlorine in extractive processes has been noted (Ferron, Fleming, O’Kane and Dreisinger, 2002), mostly because of environmental pressure for non-cyanide technologies.This paper describes a closed circuit proprietary approach (Lalancette, 2009) developed and piloted by Nichromet Extraction Inc. for the extraction of precious metals with recycled mixed halogens; chlorine and bromine from hypohalites. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROCESSThe attack of gold by halogens can vary significantly. The rate of reaction is substantially higher with bromine (Br2) than with chlorine (Cl2), by a factor of more than five, although the oxidation potential of Cl2 is higher than Br2, as shown in Equation 1a and Equation 1b (Latimer, 1952)."

In 1920 the writer presented some notes, embodying his experience with storage-battery locomotives as main under-ground haulage-motors at Brazeau collieries. (1) Since that date these motors have stood up well to the test of maximum output and heavy overloads, having accomplished all that was expected of them. The notes presented in 1920 gave a brief description of the conditions under which these motors were working at Brazeau collieries, also the cost, per ton mile, of operating them. The cost per ton mile has since then been appreciably reduced, by working the locomotives nearly to capacity and under more ideal haulage conditions, on both shifts. It is not the intention of the writer to repeat what was written in 1920, but rather to give members the benefit of his experience in operating different types or designs of locomotives; to draw their attention to the drawbacks of some designs, and to the improvements made in some of the more recent storage-battery locomotives put on the market, as regards efficiency, upkeep, and safety. Because of their flexibility storage-battery locomotives have advantages over any other type of haulage, where grades are suitable to their use. The number in use in the mines in the United States has increased enormously during the past few years, and this method of haulage is, at the present time, attracting the attention of British and Continental mining engineers.

DISCODAT is a system of computer programs written for CANMET, Canadian Department of Energy, Mines and resources, to be used in analyzing geological data for rock slope design. The programs were written in Fortran IV for an IBM 360/67 computer. A program conditions field data from field forms for storage in a line file. Data may be selectively retrieved from the line file by a general retrieval program which uses a variety of relational operators. The retrieved data may be displayed as structural diagrams or histograms produced on a line printer or in a number of maps produced on a drum plotter. There is a logical sequence which leads to the characterization of those elements of the subfabrics of a rock mass which may be kinematically active. Structural domains within the rock mass can also be outlined by a procedure described as areal analysis. Costs for a complete analysis are usually substantially less than $l/discontinuity.

"Discounted cash flow analysis provides a means of relating the magnitude of expected future cash profits to the magnitude of the initial cash investment required to purchase an asset or to develop it for commercial production. The objectives of discounted cash flow analysis are to determine:.. The net present value of a stream of expected future cash revenues and expenditures... The rate of return which the expected future cash flows will yield on a given level of initial cash investment.In the case of mineral properties, discounted cash flow analysis is generally accepted as the preferred method of valuation, whenever sufficient data are available to permit its reasoned application. Sufficient data are required to support estimation of all of the individual elements of cash revenue and cash expenditure which will be associated with the development and operation of the property, up to the end of its estimated life. It is the accuracy of these input estimates which determines the validity of the resulting determinations of profitability and rate of return on invested capital.In undertaking any discounted cash flow analysis, it is important to recognize certain fundamental attributes of the mining industty:.. The basis of any mineral development is the existence of an ore reserve... Costs are determined by the number of tonnes mined and processed, while revenues are determined by the number of pounds or ounces of metal produced. The two are related by the recovered grade of the ore... Profit is typically more sensitive to changes in revenue than it is to changes in cost... Commodity price is a principal determinant of revenue, but it is also the factor with which is associated the greatest level of financial risk.In the end, of all of the factors which must be considered in the discounted cash flow valuation of a mineral property, the most significant are the reliability of the reserve estimate, particularly with respect to recovered grade, the price at which the product is to be sold, and the risk of not maintaining the projected level of price."

"With more rigorous regulations being enacted in the mining industry, a need exists for cost effective and environmentally compliant technologies to remove selenium from mine impacted waters to ultra-low concentrations. Existing selenium treatment methods have high life cycle costs, introduce risks of acute fish toxicity, and produce biological waste residues that represent future liabilities. Furthermore, achieving selenium discharge limits of less than 4 ppb is a challenge for existing technologies. Selen-IX™ is a technology developed by BioteQ that selectively removes selenium from mine impacted waters to less than 1 ppb. The technology is purely physico-chemical and takes advantage of the basic principles of ion exchange and electrochemistry. Unlike conventional electrocoagulation that removes suspended solids and breaks emulsions or oxidizes heavy metals, the electrochemical process employed by Selen-IX™ relies on creating conditions where iron acts as a highly effective reducing reagent transforming selenium from a dissolved species into elemental selenium bound in a solid phase. The iron-selenium by-product of Selen-IX™ is an inorganic, non-hazardous and chemically stable solid. Due to their high iron content, the solids produced by Selen-IX™ are of interest to the steel making industry as a low cost feedstock. This offtake potential can not only reduce the life cycle cost of selenium removal by reducing disposal costs but more importantly, eliminate the risk of future environmental liabilities. In this paper, the basics of Selen-IX™ technology are presented along with results of successful piloting on streams from coal and copper-gold deposits.INTRODUCTIONVarious contaminants are released into mining wastewater during the extraction and processing of metals. One such contaminant is selenium. A naturally occurring element found in rocks and minerals, mining activities accelerate its release into the environment. Selenium in trace quantities is essential to all life forms but at higher concentrations it can be harmful, especially to aquatic life where selenium bioaccumulation can lead to reproductive deficiencies."

Understanding time-dependent deformation and fracturing in rock is essential, because the information of the long-term stability of rock is required for many sub-surface structures excavated in a rock mass. Time-dependent fracture propagation has been invoked as a potential key mechanism responsible for the increase in seismicity preceding earthquake ruptures. In engineering projects and in preventing natural hazards, the study of time-dependent fracturing is necessary. Subcritical crack growth is one of the main causes of time-dependent fracturing in rock. For silicate rocks, subcritical crack growth has been investigated by various researchers. It has been clarified that surrounding environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, and existence of water) have strong influence on subcritical crack growth in silicate rocks. Therefore, the information of subcritical crack growth in silicate rocks has already been enough. On the other hand, information of subcritical crack growth in carbonate rocks is not enough. Especially, the influence of surrounding environment on subcritical crack growth in carbonate rock has not been clarified yet. In this study, we investigate subcritical crack growth in carbonate rock experimentally using a fracture mechanics testing method. Marble obtained in Skopje in Macedonia is used as a carbonate rock sample. The Double Torsion method is used to measure the crack velocity and stress intensity factor. Especially, influence of water on subcritical crack growth in Macedonian marble is investigated. It was shown that the crack velocity in water is much higher than that in air at the same temperature. Based on the results of subcritical crack growth measurements, the long-term strength is evaluated for marble. It was clarified that the long-term strength in water is lower than that in air in marble. It is concluded that water has a remarkable influence on subcritical crack growth in marble. It is also considered that the long-term stability of carbonate rock masses should be ensured in a dry environment.

"AMAG investigated different aspects to improve the resistance against grain coarsening in aerospace alloys during recrystallization and was successful in finding several opportunities to minimize this effect. The studies show that one aspect to counteract grain coarsening is the chemical composition and subsequently all phases that are formed during homogenization. Starting with a fine grain (~ 50 µm) can lead to a final grain size of few mm. On the other hand with a coarse initial grain size (approximately 150 µm) and the right chemical composition the grain size can stay almost constant despite different deformation steps. Additional we investigated different sequences for the component production to eliminate the problem of grain coarsening as a coarse grain has a detrimental effect on product performance.INTRODUCTION In the aircraft industry, aluminium sheets are most commonly deformed in their soft state, followed by solution heat treatment and natural or artificial aging. If the preceding deformation is in a critical amount, during the recrystallization at solution heat treatment grain coarsening can occur. A subsequent deformation to this condition leads to an orange peel surface, which requires additional polishing. Next to this extra effort the coarse grain size produces a drop in the mechanical properties, often below specification limits. If there is no subsequent deformation, this effect is not visible and without destructive testing there is no possibility to detect the error. As mentioned before, this effect occurs during recrystallization, which is a process that is driven by the stored energy in the microstructure. The two most important aspects for an increase of the stored energy are the increase of the grain boundaries fraction (smaller grain size) and the increase of the dislocation density caused by deformation. The increase in dislocation density during the deformation arise from trapping of existing dislocations and from the generation of new dislocations. The evaluation of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in underground mines involves comprehensive business case analysis beyond just the capital and operating costs of the equipment itself. BEVs demonstrate benefits from an EHS perspective, reduced mine ventilation costs, lower energy operating costs, reduced overall GHG emissions (dependent on the source of electricity), elimination of DPM, lower equipment maintenance costs, and reduced cooling requirements in deep mines. When including batteries and supporting infrastructure, BEV capital costs are approx. 80% greater than that of diesel equipment. The project economics are highly dependent on the cost of electricity and diesel fuel, and these can vary widely depending on the location of the mining operation. Battery charging and swapping methodologies must be evaluated as there are a variety of approaches that can be employed which vary by manufacturer and type of equipment. Careful consideration of the cycle times, charging methodologies, and location of the battery charging infrastructure is necessary. Specific operating conditions must also be taken into consideration. For example, the time for blast gases to clear will be increased by reducing ventilation flow, and the potential impact on production needs to be evaluated. Similarly, the electrical distribution system needs to be evaluated for peak loading conditions when BEVs are charging. Criteria including maintainability, reliability, commercial availability, and performance need to be evaluated. BEVs have fewer components than diesel equipment and this correlates to lower overall maintenance costs, however, BEVs require maintenance personnel with specific skill sets in order to maintain the equipment. Battery lifecycle costs need to be considered as battery replacement incurs significant capital expense. Some manufacturers offer services to offset these capital costs through usage agreements. Recycling and disposal of batteries at the end of their lifecycles also need to be considered. With the increased selection of BEV equipment that will be available in the next 2-4 years, 100% BEV adoption is also possible. We recommend a holistic approach when evaluating BEVs for underground mines. This will ensure that everything is considered in order to evaluate the full impact of BEV implementation.

The programmable Logic Controller (PLC), at its present stage of evolution, is now considered as a mature control system. The PLC combines the solid-state reliability of hardwired logic and computer control systems with the simplicity of a relay ladder logic. Relay symbolic programming through a function-oriented keyboard provides a means which plant personnel can easily become accustomed to work with. In a large coal facility, it is shown that the control engineer can provide improved control flexibility with the advanced capabilities of the PLC.

The Tribag copper deposit is one of the rare examples of mineralized breccias in the Canadian Shield. The breccia is a pipe-like body, and consists of granitic, diabasic and volcanic fragments embedded in a vuggy, quartz-carbonate matrix. The mineralization is essentially chalcopyrite and pyrite, with minor molybdenite, sphalerite, galena and other sulphides. The main ore zone is saddle-like in shape, and is enveloped in a zone of chloritization, sericitization and clay-mineral alteration. It is suggested that the breccia is of the diatreme type. Introduction T HIS paper is based on eighteen months of field work, including surface and underground geological mapping and core logging, and on the survey of relevant literature. No significant amount of laboratory work has been done as yet. Location and Access The Tribag Batchawana property is located 40 miles north of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, about 10 miles east of Lake Superior. A 17-mile, all-weather road connects the property to the Trans-Canada highway to the south, and 4 miles of a 12-mile road remain to be completed to link it to the Algoma Central Railway to the northeast.
