The effect of plastic deformation on near-neutral pH stress corrosion cracking (SCC) also known as environmentally assisted cracking was studied by cracking rate measurements. All the tests were conducted in a synthetic near-neutral pH solution. The traditional potential drop tests using compact toughness (C-T) specimens with 2-3 mm long pre-cracks showed varying plastic deformation by rolling would increase the material's susceptibility to SCC. This was confirmed by cyclic loading tests using double notched flat tensile specimens with 200-300 µm long pre-cracks which gave the same results that the specimen with large scale plastic deformation by tensile loading had a relatively faster crack growth rate than that with only small scale plastic deformation.

Aux circuits existants de broyage, de flottation du cuivre, de cyanuration et du charbon en pulpe, les circuits suivants furent greffés : broyage semi-autogène, flottation du zinc, manutention des concentrés (épaississage, filtration, entreposage et chargement automatisé), décantation à contrecourant et précipitation au zinc, destruction des cyanures et remblai en pâte. Cet article se veut une revue des différentes étapes du projet d'agrandissement du concentrateur qui se sont effectuées par phases progressives de 1997 à 2000. De plus, une description des nouvelles technologies sélectionnées et implantées est présentée.

"It is difficult to know how much environmental information is absorbed by those in a position to put it to use. The following information may seem like ""old stuff"" to those whose companies are taking steps to improve their environmental performance. This paper is directed in particular to those people who are interested in determining what further changes are required to make improvements as concerned environment citizens.IntroductionUntil recently, the author was comfortable with the fact that none of the operations for which he was responsible had any environmental charges against them. It was not until one of his operations was charged with non-compliance that the author discovered due diligence as a way to avoid a second charge, and when an unfortunate spill occurred at another operation, the meaning of risk prevention was learned. Knowledge was gained step by step to the point where finally environmental information is being heeded, rather than waiting to learn from sad experience. With the appreciation of what it takes to do a good environmental job, comes an understanding of the challenge that lies ahead, and the fact that there is a lot to learn.At a recent environmental gathering, comments from the participants varied considerably. Some just didn't understand why government was being so unreasonable, while at the other end of the spectrum one individual whose company was well along the path to becoming a good environmental citizen remarked that it was all very basic. What was immediately understandable to one went right over the heads of others, indicating the different stages that have been attained in the acceptance of environmental responsibilities."

This paper looks briefly at some of the agreements and types of royalties that may be met during exploration activities, but does not go into details relating to them. Agreements can either make or break a deal or relationship. A well drafted, comprehensive and fair agreement can create good relations and trust among the parties and will go a long way towards making a deal work. In the best of all worlds the agreement will be put away and not need to be referred to after it has been signed (but it will be there if needed to sort out potential problems). On the other hand, a poorly drafted agreement or one that is inappropriate to the circumstances or unfair to one of the parties can break a deal and end up with the parties facing each other in that expensive, unproductive and time-consuming occupation ? a lawsuit. Accordingly, it is advisable to involve professional advisers with any agreement. The straightforward one may involve no more that a read through whereas the more complex agreement will require considerable involvement. There is, however, one rule for every explorationist to remember: a professional adviser is only an adviser. His responsibility is to make sure that you have the necessary information to make a reasoned decision but the decision is yours, not the adviser?s. It is your deal, you are going to have to live with it, and it is inappropriate for an adviser to introduce new concepts or amend negotiated ones without your specific instructions. Mineral exploration agreements, although basically option, acquisition and joint participation agreements, come in all the shapes and forms, appropriate to give effect to the endless variety of deals negotiated by the ever-active minds of explorationists. You will note the reference to "joint participation agreements" rather than "joint venture agreements". The latter term was purposely avoided because, with the current activity of explorationists from common law jurisdictions in civil law jurisdictions, it has become necessary for the explorationist to become familiar with corporations and shareholders agreements. As most of you are no doubt aware, under the civil law system a joint venture is normally not recognized as a legal entity and, therefore, joint participation in projects is usually by way of corporations.

THE views and observations expressed herein on this old but constantly recurring question are our own, no effort having been made to align them with standard texts. Therefore, while they may find general acceptance amongst fellow engineers, they must stand as personal opinions and as such are open to debate and discussion. In order properly to consider the subject, it should first be 'set in proper perspective. Why are Prospects Examined? Prospects are examined to determine whether they may contain economic concentrations of metals or minerals, the legitimate mining business being run, pretty largely, to make money. Next to food and clothing, modern civilization is based on metals, with which are included in this discussion minerals, oils, and fuels. A constant and increasing demand for the common metals requires the location of replacements for depleted orebodies, while the use and appreciation of new metals brings increasing demand for them. Aluminium is a good example of a metal which has, within recent years, made great progress. Today, we are becoming increasingly aware of magnesium, chromium, tungsten, thallium, and other lesser known, metals.

The microstructural changes during thermal ageing at 650ºC in the interfacial region of Alloy 625 weld overlay on a 2.25Cr-1Mo steel was evaluated. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy in SE and BSE modes, electron probe microanalysis and hardness mapping were used to characterize as-welded microstructure and its changes during thermal ageing and precipitates of interfacial region. Carbon migration across the interface was recognised as a major issue. A region of 300 µm wide adjacent to the fusion line, which was found harder in the as-welded condition decarburized during thermal exposure. Studies revealed that this region transformed to a soft region containing large ferrite grains and micron-sized carbides. In the weld overlay, a 50 µm wide hard band (over 650 Kgf mm-2) adjacent to the fusion line formed and carbide precipitates were observed along grain boundaries. Carbide precipitation mostly occured in the 150 µm wide region close to fusion line.

The Granby ores may be divided into three groups or classes. The No. I ore is a heavy pyrite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, sulphide carrying some free silica, and calcite. No. 2 ore carries the same general group of sulphides as does No. 1, but in a lesser amount. The gangue is an altered greenstone. No. 3 ore has a smaller amount of sulphides than either of the others. Analyses of these ores is as follows: Cu. Si02 Fe. CaO S. Al 203 MgO No. I. Drill cores show a certain dissemination of sulphides in portions of the rock, so that grinding to 5 per cent. + 65 mesh with 65 per cent.-200 mesh liberates the sulphide minerals very completely. The association of the sulphides is fundamental. The pyrite was probably deposited first and was followed by a portion of the chalcopyrite, or these two portions of the sulphide minerals were deposited together.

Optimizing the long-term efficiency of passive systems for the treatment of highly contaminated acid mine drainage (AMD) is still a challenging issue. The optimization lies, among others, on improving the understanding and quantification of metal removal mechanisms in order to predict and enhance the stability of neo-formed minerals in secondary phases. Sorption, and precipitation as oxides-hydroxides, carbonates and bio-sulfides are likely the most important metal removal mechanisms involved in passive biotreatment of both slightly and highly contaminated AMD. In the same time, the preferred mechanism is precipitation of metal sulfides that are more stable and less pH dependent than carbonates and oxides-hydroxides. However, results of relatively recent research studies performed at laboratory scale showed that sulfides accounted only for up to 15% of total metals removed in passive bioreactors treating highly contaminated AMD dominated by iron (around 500 mg/L). Several approaches were used in the aforementioned studies to understand and quantify metal removal mechanisms in spent reactive mixtures collected from long-term (12-15 months) operating column bioreactors. These included: thermodynamic equilibrium modeling and various chemical extractions and mineralogical analyses (such as single and sequential extractions, acid volatile sulfides-simultaneously extracted metals determination, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermo-gravimetric analysis). The large proportion of metals (85%) removed by sorption and precipitation as oxides-hydroxides and carbonates suggests a relatively high mobility of the neoformed minerals, especially in low pH conditions. However, no data is available on the long-term stability of spent reactive mixtures and, on the implications for the sustainable management of this type of solid waste. Lately there is almost a consensus that the efficiency of highly contaminated AMD treatment is warranted by the use of multi-step passive systems, including both chemical and biological units, installed sequentially. However, very few well-documented studies are available on the design, construction, operation and long-term efficiency of these multi-step systems. A leading example is the tri-unit passive system installed on the abandoned Lorraine mine site (Québec) to treat a highly contaminated AMD dominated by iron (about 2,500 mg/L). This tri-step system (160 m3), consisting in two bioreactors separated by a unit filled with wood ashes, achieves to date a satisfactory removal of iron (up to 99%). Moreover, based on the data collected during laboratory testing, iron was mainly removed in the wood ashes unit (from around 3,200 mg/L to 10 mg/L) by precipitation of oxides-hydroxides as predominant mechanism and only partially by sorption. However, no data is available on the actual metal removal mechanisms in the field. Overall, theses multi-step systems are more complex and their long-term performance is even less predictable than the single unit systems. This paper presents the current knowledge and the research needs on metal removal mechanisms in passive bioreactors and multi-step systems for the long-term treatment of highly contaminated AMD. The interactions between bitumen and quartz sands in aqueous solutions were studied with the objective of recovering residual bitumen from Athabasca oil sands froth treatment tailings. It was observed that the presence of various multivalent metal cation (Fe3-, Fe2+, Mg2+,Ca2+, etc.) increased the mutual coagulation between quartz particles and oil or bitumen droplets within certain pH ranges. While the increased coagulation was detrimental to the recovery of the bitumen since it lowered the degree of bitumen liberation from sands, this effect could be reduced or eliminated by the addition of organic chemicals such as citric acid, oxalic acid and EDTA. Among these organic chemicals, citric acid was found particularly effective even at very low concentration.

"LIKE ALL OTHER NOVA SCOTIANS, I have been thrilled during the past few years with the growing evidence that substantial reserves of oil and gas are being discovered off the Atlantic coast of Canada. There are those in this province who believe that large-scale commercial production is just around the corner, and that when it starts Nova Scotia will begin to float on a sea of royalties. These overly optimistic people, of whom I am not one, are convinced that with the first barrel of oil shipped to market, Nova Scotia can forget its financial problems while its people take on the luxurious lifestyle of the shieks of Kuwait or Saudi Arabia. You and I know, however, that even though offshore oil and gas may turn out to be the greatest gift nature has ever bestowed on Eastern Canada, it may take some considerable time before the reserves can be accurately assessed, before the industry can become fully operational, and before the benefits of production can be translated into royalties and tax revenue, improved public services, new industrial facilities and more jobs. While it is premature for the ordinary Nova Scotian to take on the habit of buying expensive cigars and lighting them with ten-dollar bills, it is not too early for him to insist that governments and industry plan intensively and well for the beneficial exploitation of undersea resources."

In this work, bioleaching of non-sulphidic materials by applying chemoheterotrophic bacteria and fungi is studied. It was found that the tested fungus, Aspergillus niger, leached substantially more nickel from olivine than the tested bacterium, Bacillus mucilaginosus. A. niger also outperformed fungal species Humicola grisae and Penicillium chrysogenum in the leaching of olivine. Contrary to traditional acid leaching, the microorganisms leached nickel preferentially over magnesium and iron. On average, a selectivity factor of 2.2 was achieved for nickel compared to iron. This can potentially facilitate postprocessing of the leach liquor and reduce the cost. The impact of ultrasonic conditioning on bioleaching was also tested, and substantial increase in nickel extraction with A. niger was observed. This was credited to an increase in the fungal growth rate, the promotion of particle degradation, and the detachment of the stagnant biofilm around the particles. Furthermore, ultrasonic conditioning enhanced the selectivity of A. niger for nickel, resulting in a selectivity ratio for Ni/Fe equal to 3.5. The chemical resistance of the selected microorganisms to several heavy metal and metalloid (As(III,V), Cd, Cr(III,V), Ni, Pb, Zn) was evaluated. It was found that, with the exception of As(v) and Cd, A. niger has high tolerance to these components. Therefore, this biohydrometallurgical route can potentially be applied to non-sulphidic wastederived materials, such as industrial slags, ashes and sludges.

"An Automatic Haulage Truck (AHT) has been developed for manless tramming of run-of-mine material in an operating mine. The AHT has a 70-ton capacity and uses an electric trolley system in combination with a computer control system to operate the vehicle. The purpose of the AHT was to provide a high capacity, high productivity material transfer system where conveyor belt applications are not immediately practical.The AHT project was started in 1983 at Inco Limited, Ontario Division as a result of the need for rapid material transport to match increased extraction rates resulting from bulk mining methods. The original concept was to use a continuous loader with the truck. However, in order to minimize development problems the truck project was considered a stand-alone project.The AHT project consisted of concept development, preliminaryand detailed design, manufacture, surf ace testing and mine implementation.The AHT was manufactured and ready for testing in 1988. At this point the truck was first moved onto the test track for debugging. This proved successful and in 1989the decision was made to install the AHT at Little Stobie mine on 2000 level. Commissioning of the system was started in 1990and at present a fully functional automated haulage system is in place at Little Stobie mine producing 3000 tons/day.This paper describes the project presenting results achieved to date."

"Artificial stope support has become an essential component of many underground mining operations. Because the use of cable bolts in open stopes is a relatively new concept, most support is still designed by trial and error or by rules of thumb. This often results in costly overdesigned support or inadequate support which leads to stope failure.This paper proposes guidelines to determine support requirements using the stability graph method. The stability graph method is an empirical open stope design technique that takes into account the key factors that influence stope stability. The factors for the design of a cable bolt support system include bolt length, bolt intensity and the original rock mass competency and can be estimated using empirically calibrated charts. The empirical charts were developed based on more than 60 case histories of cable bolting success and failure in Canadian open Slope mines.The concept of pre reinforcement and supp ort stiffness will also be discussed.INTRODUCTIONArtificial support, in the form of rock anchors, has become an important component of all underground mining operations because its stabilizing effect contributes to make underground workings safer. There are several types of rock anchors featuring different properties and having a variety of functions. This paper focusses on grouted cable bolt applications in large open stope mining. Such a support system may improve the competency of the disturbed rock mass to a point approaching the undisturbed rock quality by limiting joint movement and dilation. This results in more stable, possibly larger and, thus, more efficient production stopes."

"While time and again many authors have categorically stressed the restoration of the environment, very little effort has been made in the mineral industry to develop the economy of environmental control. There are many abatement procedures that search a maze of variants. Among them pricing environmental damage seems to be more logical and easily implementable.IntroductionMining as an operation has a severe impact on the Earth's natural resources. While economical environment control is much sought after, solutions are often varied and complex, and can differ in the problems of single or multiple mine sites.Determination of Optimum use LevelsIn “mining environmental control"" it is required to strike a balance to find optimum use levels. The solution is to find where the welfare benefits equal the cost involved to curb the degree of environmental damage (Fig . I) . In the mining industries this can be done by modifying the production/extraction process itself. For most pollutants, the marginal costs of control will exceed the benefits from further reduction of damage long before the zero pollution damage point is reached (Fig. I). From an economic perspective the optimal alteration of environment by mining would occur at z; pollution continues to be caused by ""zy"" control units, but it would be inefficient to pursue the redemption efforts further because the marginal cost involved would exceed marginal welfare benefits."

"The Management and Economics Society has undertaken a survey of industry practice in the evaluation of mineral projects. The survey addresses a number of issues relating to evaluation techniques, discounted cash flow methodology, and risk. Completed during the spring and summer of2005, the results provide a record of opinion at an active and vital time in our industry.The 2005 survey questionnaire was distributed by e-mail to groups and organizations around the world. There were 22 respondents out of several hundred questionnaires distributed (we gather this small proportion of respondents is typical for such surveys). The responses, although a small number, show a consistency that suggests that the survey has captured the views of the industry. The results of the survey are summarized below in series of tables and graphs.The reader is cautioned that the results are a snapshot of industry practice at a point in time as represented by a small sampling of the industry's practitioners. These results should be viewed as indicative values."

The time allowed for this paper would be better served in con-centrating on vacuum filters common to all mine mills and to offer some simple guide lines to the mill metallurgists in the choice of filter cloth for this type of filter.The requirement of the filter cloth is to separate solids from liquids under a vacuum head by forming a permeable layer of solids or cake, through which liquids can flow until the panel or disc sector leave the slurry tank and to continue to pass residual moisture from the cake formed during the cake drying cycle, and to discharge the cake on air-blow so that the cycle can be repeated.Whilst the mill metallurgist should not be expected to under¬stand all aspects of filter cloth manufacturer, it is however, advantageous for him to understand a little of the textile language associated with filter cloth for his own protection against ""trial-and-error"" methods, which are both time consuming and costly.If improvements are to be made over existing filter cloth in use an examination of the limiting factors of the cloth used should be made and the major causes for removal determined, e.g. cloth blinding, high moisture in cake, poor cake discharge on air blow, mechanical damage to cloth.As each of the limiting factors mentioned has a bearing on the choice of fibre used, the yarn type and weave of a suitable cloth, an under-standing of these points will assist the mill metallurgist in avoiding repetitive trials offering little degree of success."

"The physical processes occurring in flotation columns are very complex as they take place at different scales over a range of sizes and multiple phases. Column design and optimum operating parameters are usually obtained from empirical studies and although progress has been made on its numerical modelling, most column models rely on simplifications that do not fully capture the hydrodynamics. In particular, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models of the pulp phase in flotation usually assume the bubble population to be monodispersed. While this assumption may be reasonable in some situations, the polydispersed nature of the gas phase can have a significant impact on the predicted flotation rates.Techniques to model size distribution do exist in the literature and have been rigorously analysed in the past two decades for bubble columns, which are very similar to flotation columns from a hydrodynamics point of view. In fact, available CFD models of flotation columns are an extension of bubble column models, sometimes including additional equations for solids treated as passive scalars. This work focuses on the development of an efficient CFD model for flotation columns. The bubble size distribution in the column has been modelled using the Population Balance Equation (PBE), which is solved using the Direct Quadrature Method of Moments (DQMOM). Coupled with the PBE, the multiphase flow equations in the column have been modelled using the standard Eulerian–Eulerian approach. The solution of this coupled system has been made tractable in this work with the implementation of a highly parallelised adaptive-mesh finite element method. This powerful framework has been implemented in the open source CFD code Fluidity and it allows the carrying out of detailed simulations of flotation columns in 2D and 3D, with important implications for industrial column evaluation and design."
