Corrosion was observed on the aluminum pressure plates and dress-caps that hold the glazing in place on a curtain-walled building, The multi-storey building in question is situated in the downtown area of a busy Canadian city, For aesthetic reasons, the original design required the dress-caps (which have L-shaped cross-sections) to be externally clad with thin copper sheet. Since the aluminum was in direct contact with the copper trim, galvanic corrosion developed that resulted in damage to the aluminum components, Soluble corrosion products washing off the copper trim may also have contributed to the accelerated corrosion of the aluminum, The aluminum pressure plates and dress-caps are being systematically replaced with components made of fibre-reinforced plastic. The outsides of these new components will be clad with thin copper sheet in order to preserve the original appearance of the building.

In order to understand what governs the leaching of exchangeable rare earth (RE) and impurities and enhance the RE leaching process, the effects of the concentration of ammonium sulfate, pH and leaching temperature on the migration of RE and aluminum (Al) during the leaching of weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth ore was studied. The elution curves for ammonium ion (NH4 +) were also studied to reduce the consumption of the leaching agent. It was found that a high concentration of leaching agent can enhance the leaching process of RE and Al, reduce the breakthrough volume of NH4 + and more rapidly obtain the equilibrium of NH4 +. However, excessive leaching agent can both increase the cost and the burden on the environment. There is almost no variation on the elution curves of RE and Al in the pH range of 4-8 and control of the pH of the leaching agent can be omitted. It is better for the leaching work to be done in summer since higher temperatures can enhance the RE leaching process and improve the use ratio of ammonium. Using 0.1 mol/L ammonium sulfate for leaching 250 g RE ore, 95.42% RE extraction can be obtained when the volume of leachate is 102.6 mL. At this moment, only 18.17% of NH4 + is used to exchange RE and 49.22% of NH4 + is left in the leachate that can be reused as leaching agent by replenishing ammonium sulfate. The results of our studies can provide theoretical guidance for high efficiency and low consumption exploitation of RE ores.

Most metallurgical industries generate toxic waste that must be treated prior to being released to the environment. However, in a lot of cases, the waste materials are poorly characterized or the analytical results are not well interpreted. These shortcomings often result in the development of inefficient industrial procedures, thus causing economic waste and difficulty meeting environmental regulations. Fortunately, a wide range of analytical techniques are available to guide researchers and engineers into making sound process development decisions. In this work, an industrial selenium and mercury removal process is used as an example to illustrate the application of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) on solid waste. Furthermore, samples of analytical results are presented and interpreted and the modifications to the industrial process that resulted are explained. Finally, a brief description of the advantages and limitations of the aforementioned analytical techniques is given with an emphasis on industrial solid waste material.

For ageing open pit mining operations where the economic viability of another pushback is questionable, mine life can be extended by increasing the wall slope. If the steepening is started where ore intersects the pit wall, the capital outlay for waste stripping is minimal. Such a venture must be conducted safely, and a basic requirement would include loading equipment capable of working remotely. In the application described, alternatives in the choice of loader included equipment available on site, or the purchase and assembly of used equipment. Only electric cable shovels were in use at the operation, and it was thought that these would be more capable of digging high muck piles at the productivity demanded by an increasingly efficient mill, and in a challenging environment less suited to a rubber tired loader or hydraulic front shovel. A decision was made to convert an older electric cable shovel to remote controlled operation and to include the application of semi-robotic control. The conversion was completed successfully and is described, along with methods developed for remote operation of a shovel, and the application of various sensors for semi-robotic operation. A plan of operations to mine out several completed double benches and make two quadruple benches with wide catchment berms is depicted. On completion of this task, the working benches developed would be wide enough to operate at near full production. Prior to moving the remote controlled shovel back into the pit, a large wall instability became active, eventually closing the operation. The instability could have been safely mined using the remote controlled shovel.

Mitochondria play a key role in the regulation of apoptosis (cell death) and in diseases characterised by abnormal apoptotic responses such as cancer. Mitochondrial membrane permeabilisation (MMP), regulated by the mitochondrial permeability transition pore complex, is widely accepted as being central to the process of cell death. As a result there has been considerable recent interest in targeting mitochondrial cell death pathways in the development of new chemotherapeutic agents.(1) There is potential to overcome the two overriding problems in cancer chemotherapy?the common occurrence of drug-resistant tumour cells and the lack of selectivity of cancer drugs in differentiating between tumour cells and normal tissues. Significantly, carcinoma cells have an elevated mitochondrial membrane potential relative to normal cells and lipophilic cations are concentrated within mitochondria in response to mitochondrial membrane potentials. There is potential for the selective targeting to tumour cells with compounds having optimal lipophilic-hydrophilic character. Research stemming from the early 1980?s points to two distinct classes of Au(I) phosphine antitumour agents where an antimitochondrial mode of action has been implicated: (i) neutral linear two-coordinate Au(I) complexes such as triethylphosphinegold(I) chloride and the tetraacetylthioglucose gold(I) phosphine complex, Auranofin; (ii) cationic tetrahedral bis-chelated Au(I) phosphine complexes related to [Au(dppe)2]+.(2) Recently it has been reported that Auranofin, at submicromolar concentrations, induces MMP observed as mitochondrial swelling and dissipation of membrane potential.(3, 4) Both events are completely inhibited by cyclosporin-A, the specific inhibitor of MMP. The permeability changes were shown to occur at concentrations associated with the selective inhibition of mitochondrial thioredoxin reductase.(3) Auranofin is a potent and specific inhibitor of this enzyme due to Au(I) binding to the active-site selenol group.(5) The redox state of mitochondrial thiols may be critical in the control of MMP.(3) In general, swelling is stimulated by thiol blocking or oxidising agents and is prevented by thiol reducing agents.(1) Mitochondrial thioredoxin reductase may play an import role in the redox control of the permeability of mitochondrial membranes.(3) Our interest is in investigating the antitumour potential of Au(I) phosphine compounds using a number of different approaches. In recent work we have evaluated a series of hydrophilic analogs of [Au(dppe)2]+ containing pyridylphosphine ligands which have demonstrated greater tumour selectivity than the parent compound. To investigate the possible antimitochondrial mode of action we are studying the effect of [Au(dppe)2]+ and related compounds on isolated rat liver mitochondria. To assess whether the lipophiliccationic nature of the compounds determines the antitumour activity, we have synthesized a series of novel Au(I) complexes based on heterocyclic carbene rather than phosphine ligands. The similar chemistry and structural features of the two classes of complexes allow us to assess whether the phosphine ligands are essential for the antitumour properties.

The PQ Deeps (PQD) is a production zone located at Newmont’s Musselwhite Mine in northern Ontario. Development started for the PQD in late 2017, and the first stopes were mined starting in early 2021. Unlike most historic longitudinal stoping of narrower orebodies at Musselwhite, the PQD is a wider orebody following the plunge of a fold hinge and is extracted primarily by transverse stoping. Some geotechnical challenges were experienced during early stoping efforts, necessitating design changes throughout late 2021 and early 2022 to optimize the stope design. This work describes the mining methods and design changes to transverse PQD stoping based on geotechnical lessons learned during early stoping efforts.

"Abstract - Traditionally, the emphasis in ore and reserve inventory has been to provide fairly simple definitions and presentations for reporting to shareholders and the investing public. The recent introduction of the mineral resource category aims to take into account the "part of the deposit that cannot yet be produced or extracted legally and profitably." Recent proposals still place insufficient emphasis on relating resource/reserve reporting definitions more closely to the needs of mining and exploration operators for the estimation and inventory of these basic material assets.In most schemes, significant ambiguities and shortcomings remain. These concern the potential economic interest of resources, the concept of continuity which is fundamental to the estimation of volumes, mass and grades, the objectives of the production feasibility study and the requirements of the geology, engineering and economic appraisals leading to it, and the "availability" of the permits required to start mine development. Up to now, no industry-wide formal consensus has yet been reached for any of these steps, nor for reconciliation between successive statements.A resource/reserve inventory scheme is presented here that is based on ISO 9000 principles and the Australasian system. Explicit criteria and transition points are proposed to define resource and reserve. Similarly, appropriate criteria are proposed to classify the three mineral resource and two ore reserve categories, based on geological and value continuity and on the objectives of the feasibility study. This scheme offers a way to develop ISO 9001 certification of resource/reserve estimation procedures for mining operations and supply exploration companies with an appropriate inventory system, to allow better information for the shareholders and the investing public.Résumé - L’objectif des inventaires des minerais et des réserves est, depuis le début du siècle, de fournir des définitions simples et d’ordre général visant les actionnaires et le public investisseur. L’introduction d’une catégorie de « ressources minérales » fournira un cadre tenant compte de la "portion d’un gisement qui ne peut encore être extraite ou exploitée légalement et à profit." Cependant, les propositions récentes de systèmes d’inventaires ne comportent pas des définitions des ressources et réserves qui tiennent compte suffisamment des besoins des opérateurs en exploitation et en exploration minière.La plupart des systèmes comportent des ambiguïtés et des carences. Citons la susceptibilité d’exploitation commerciale des ressources, la continuité qui est au centre de l’estimation des volumes, masses et teneurs, les objectifs de l’étude de la faisabilité de la mise en production, le niveau requis des travaux de géologie, d’ingénierie et d’économique qui y mènent, ainsi que la disponibilité des permis dont dépend la mise en production. Il n’y a jusqu’à maintenant aucun consensus dans l’industrie sur ces points, ni sur des procédures de réconciliation entre les estimations successives.Le système d’inventaire des ressources/réserves proposé ici s’appuie sur la structure ISO 9000 et le système australien. Des critères et des points tournants explicites sont établis pour définir les ressources et les réserves. De même, les définitions des trois catégories de ressources et deux catégories de réserves, s’apparent sur la continuité de la géologie et des teneurs et sur les objectifs de l’étude de la faisabilité. There are numerous advantages in replacing lead-based anodes with mixed metal oxide (MMO) coated anodes in copper electrowinning; for example, lower energy consumption, improved working conditions for operators and less environmental impact. Since 2012, Permascand AB in Ljungaverk, Sweden has evaluated Permascand coated titanium anodes in copper electrowinning pilot trials at Glencore Nikkelverk in Kristiansand, Norway. The investigation has proceeded in three different steps (Phase I, II and III). In Phase I, different Permascand coatings, electrode structures and coating methods were investigated. The results showed that improved current distribution, lower energy consumption and longer service life could be obtained with expanded mesh electrode structure in a box configuration compared to rod anodes in a single-mode construction. In addition, improved current distribution and less coating wear was found when electrostatic spray coating was used instead of brush (manual) coating. It was also found that the extrapolated service life from controlled lab experiments at 200 A/m2 was much shorter compared to what was experimentally obtained in copper electrowinning pilot trials at similar current densities. This was mainly attributed to different coating failure mechanisms in lab and industrial copper production. INTRODUCTION Traditionally lead-based anodes have been used in copper in electrowinning due to lower cost. But there are many advantages in replacing lead-based anodes with mixed metal oxide (MMO) coated titanium anodes in copper electrowinning, such as lower energy consumption, higher corrosion resistance, improved working conditions for operators and less environmental impact. Still, many facilities are using lead-based anodes, although the progression of using metal oxide coated anodes in copper electrowinning has slightly increased (Robinson et al., 2012).

A Steel Compression Reinforcement Repair Technique (PetroSleevel) system has been developed that has the ability to repair pipeline defects such as stress corrosion cracking (SCC) without requiring welding to the operating pipeline. The Technology has been used to repair active cracking in ERW seam and cracking in the pipe body. All repairs were performed while the pipeline was in operation. This paper will discuss the engineering theory, testing performed to verify the engineering theory, and examples of actual sleeve installations.

Annual oil production from the Canadian Oil Sands in Northern Alberta has been rising for several decades, and more ore and overburden are excavated each year from an increasing number of open pit mines. Overburden meeting certain specifications will be used to dam tailings and fill open pits, but the remaining material must be stored in overburden storage structures (OBSS). Well-designed overburden storage structures are more stable and cost less in the short- and long-term. The purpose of this paper is to explore OBSS designs that will be stable yet economical in the short- and long-term. The geological background of the site is briefly discussed, including the effect of each of the main geologic layers (recently deposited till and muskeg, Clearwater Formation clay shales, McMurray Formation oil sands, and the Devonian limestone) on the slope stability of the OBSS. Cost is considered in the analysis when balancing between minimizing costs (steeper slopes) and acceptable factors of safety (flatter slopes), all the while considering the financial consequences of failure. Potential failure planes are identified and probabilistic analysis is conducted on the critical failure surface. The variations in the factor of safety caused by varying pore water pressure, friction angle, and cohesion, are plotted and discussed.

MR. F. E. LATHE: In studying any subject whatever, one should at least occasionally stand back from the canvas, as it were, and take a broad view of the picture. It is such a view of the subject of industrial minerals that Dr. Wilson has given us today, and, in consideration of our efforts to utilize Canada's resources to the utmost in the present emergency, it seems most timely. I shall confine my remarks on the subject to the resources of the atmosphere and hydrosphere. We seldom stop to realize our dependence upon the atmosphere, not merely as a source of the oxygen we breathe but also of other indispensable elements. As recently as the beginning of the present century, grave concern was felt lest the rapidly increasing population of the world should ultimately starve for lack of the nitrogen required for crop growth. I recently noticed a reference to the Scientific American for March, 1890-just fifty years ago-in which an account is given of work on the fixation of nitrogen, which, said the article, "leads to the conclusion that while cyanides and ammonia may be thus produced experimentally, there are as yet insuperable difficulties in the way of adapting those methods to industrial purposes". Y et, in the early part of the present century, the development of the arc, cyanamide, and synthetic ammonia processes of nitrogen fixation was such as to remove, for all time to come the possibility of a shortage of nitrogen. Today, the atmosphere is by far our greatest source of nitrogen, and the capacity of the nitrogen fixation plants of the world is at least 4,000,000 tons annually-much more than can at present be utilized. Pure oxygen or oxygen-enriched air offers great possibilities in metallurgy and industrial chemistry, but, so far, little application has been made. In a paper presented to the Institute in 1926, 1 pointed out the theoretical savings which could be effected by the use of oxygen in burning carbon-when the gases pass off at 2,460°F., the fuel saving is no less than 50 percent. The use of oxygen on a commercial scale is intimately tied up with the question of refractories, but we should not forget that the possible changes in metallurgical practice by the use of oxygen are truly of revolutionary character.

DISCUSSION AT QUEBEC MEETING MR. A. V. CORLETT: With drill holes radiating from a common point, is loading carried to the collars, and do you undertake to distribute the powder evenly? MR. R. V. PORRITT: When the collars of the holes, particularly the diamond-drill holes, are close together, two out of three holes are loaded only to within six or seven feet of the collars, and the intervening holes are loaded close to the collars. When the collars are farther apart, the holes are loaded close to the collars. No spacers are used, and the holes are filled solid with powder, this applying particularly to the diamond-drill holes, except, of course, where the collars are close together and some holes are not loaded close to the collars. MR. J. G. L. McCREA: I would like to enquire in respect to the various efforts made to reduce the cost of diamond drilling to the lowest point, what is. the relative cost of the solid bit to the standard bit? It would seem that the solid bit has the higher cost. MR. PORRITT: The non-coring or solid bit gives a slightly lower diamond cost than the coring bit. With the coring bit, the greatest diamond loss is on the inside stones, apparently due partly to vibration, but mainly to the core blocking against these stones. This condition, of course, does not apply with the non-coring bit. Our experience is that the non-coring bit, which drills out a much greater area, has a diamond consumption slightly less than the coring bit. The non-coring bit is sturdier, and is far less liable to damage in starting holes and in drilling through cracked or broken ground.

"Cominco's Polaris Mine is a lead-zinc underground operation that began commercial production in early 1982. The mine site is located on Little Cornwallis Island in the Canadian Arctic at a latitude of 75°23'N and at a longitude of 96°55'W. The nearest settlement, Resolute Bay, some 100 kilometres southeasterly from the mine, is accessed from the mine by light aircraft. The mine site can be accessed by sea during the six-week ice-free period each year. During this time all major operating supplies are brought to the mine and the lead and zinc concentrate products are shipped out to market.GeologyThe Polaris orebody lies near the top of the Thumb Mountain Formation of Ordovician age. This formation is a relatively homogeneous section of thin to medium bedded limestones which are brecciated and dolomitized in the area around the orebody. The deposit is described as a Mississippi Valley-type orebody. Ore minerals are sphalerite and galena with the waste being predominantly dolomite with calcite and marcasite. The ore is quite porous with voids being generally filled with ice as the mineralized zone lies entirely within permafrost. Reserves consist of about twenty million tonnes of ore grading 3.8% Pb and 14.3% Zn with a further three million tonnes of inferred ore at a slightly lower grade.The orebody strikes in a north-south direction with the hangingwall dipping at about twenty degrees to the east. It is generally conformable with the stratigraphy. The footwall in the western portion of the orebody, the Panhandle, lies about 10 to 30 metres below the hangingwall. To the east the footwall drops sharply, creating an orebody height of up to 110 metres in what is referred to as the Keel Zone. The Panhandle Zone has typically 80 - 110 metres of cover above the hangingwall , About 25% of the reserves are in the Panhandle Zone, the remainder being in the Keel Zone. Figure I illustrates a plan view of the orebody relative to other surface facilities on the property and Figure 2 illustrates a simplified section through the Panhandle and Keel Zones."

"The otherwise waste heat in many water streams in the mining industry can be used to provide space heating of adjacent infrastructure including laboratories, workshops, and offices. This can be achieved by using heat pump systems, which can work as a replacement or in conjunction with existing space heating. In the example investigated—process cooling streams at an ore smelter—the analysis provided illustrates that annual heating costs can be 19% lower and a simultaneous 62% reduction in CO2 emissions can be achieved.RÉSUMÉ Dans l’industrie minière, la chaleur qui serait normalement perdue des circuits d’eau pourrait servir à chauffer des structures adjacentes incluant les laboratoires, les ateliers et les bureaux. "J. S. Redpath Limited, an underground contractor with a worldwide presence, has implemented innovative techniques in various projects in Canada to shorten the development cycle. Conventional methods currently used for installing primary ground support are compared with the Australian technique of bolting and meshing with jumbos equipped with twin telescopic booms, in-cycle shotcreting, and the use of two jumbos and two scissor bolters set up side by side in wide headings. Recommendations and lessons learned are presented with the aim of providing realistic expectations with regard to development advance rates in a mining environment.RÉSUMÉ J. S. Redpath Limitée, un entrepreneur minier souterrain d’envergure mondiale, a complété plusieurs projets au Canada où des techniques novatrices ont été mises en oeuvre pour raccourcir le cycle de développement. "The Laochang mine, located in the Sanjiang area of southwestern Yunnan Province of China, is a volcanogenic massive Pb-Zn-Cu sulfide deposit. It is hosted by a pyroclastic sequence of Early Carboniferous age, namely the lower member of the Yiliu Group, which was intruded by syenite and rhyolite porphyry. The volcanic suite is basaltic or basaltic-andesitic in composition, has alkaline affInities, and is associated with the initial rifting along the margin of the Baoshan-Shanstate continental microplate (Yang, 1989). The ores are typically Pb>Zn>Cu in composition, averaging 3.820/0 Pb, 3.51% Zn, from 0.01% to 1.85% Cu (0.107% av.), a high average content of Ag (113 glt) and recoverable amounts of Au, n, Gd, Ga, Ge, In. A massive sulfide zone, in which lenticular and stratiform orebodies are localized in a sulfide-<:arbonate-silica shale unit or sulfidic tuffIte horizon that usually overlies coarse-grained pyroclastic rocks, is underlain by a stringer sulfide zone developed in a subvolcanic intrusion or volcanic sequence. The sulfIde mineral assemblages, from the top to the bottom of the deposit, are: realgar + orpiment - galena + sphalerite + pyrite - chalcopyrite + pyrite + pyrrhotite + arsenopyrite. Oxide and sulfate minerals occur rarely in the massive ores. The massive ores are generally fme-grained and banded, but coarse-grained ore, colloform and framboidal texture, and growth-zoned pyrite and sphalerite are common. Sedimentary features such as graded bedding, brecciated and deformed ore clasts, and chaotically emplaced blocks, are well preserved, indicating that the massive orebodies have undergone slumping and displacement. Alteration is weak in the hanging-wall rocks, but strong in the stringer zone. Two distinctive alteration zones have been identifIed: the upper zone, characterized by an assemblage of quartz, carbonates, chlorite, albite, zeolite and sericite, and the lower zone containing diopside, tremolite, actinolite, gamet, clinozoisite, and epidote.The general features of the Laochang deposit are in accord with the descriptive model of VMS deposits (Lydon, 1984). However, it falls into neither the Zn-Cu group nor the Zn-Pb-Cu group chemically (Franklin et al., 1981). The depositional setting of the Laochang deposit is quite different from Cyprus or Besshi-type massive sulfide deposits. Laochang is hosted by alkaline lavas that were erupted in a submarine continental rift. Although some features of the Laochang deposit are similar to those of Kuroko-type deposits, there are remarkable differences in the alteration mineral assemblage, the proportion of ore-forming elements (lead enriched) and the amounts of oxides and sulfates. These suggest corresponding differences in ore fluid composition and the associated ore-forming environment. Thus, the authors suggest that the Laochang deposit may be a distinct type of VMS deposit."

There have recently been executives at major metals companies who have recommended that Greenfield Projects not be pursued. Greenfield includes not only new geographical locations, but also new technologies and new types of feed materials. In the middle part of the 20th Century, two such projects were successfully commercialized to recover nickel from Cuban lateritic ores. One project (at Nicaro) used the Caron ammonia-ammonium carbonate leach and the other (at Moa Bay) a high pressure acid leach. How both of these projects dealt with these Greenfield issues will be reviewed, based on the original reports that described the research and development of the plants. This study will include a review of the critical ore characterization and sorting issues, as well as the extractive metallurgical, product recovery and equipment selection and sizing problems and how they were solved at each stage of project development, from laboratory through one or more pilot scale plants to start up and operation. In one case, a major revision of the plant was made after several years of operation to correct operating, equipment selection and materials of construction problems that hindered economical operation. These descriptions will provide a guide through the complicated and critical issues that in recent times have caused many companies to give up on similar development. Even with the more advanced analytical and computational tools available to today’s mineralogists, engineers and metallurgists, the basic concepts with which these projects successfully addressed their sets of problems are still required. In addition, upper management, now perhaps further removed from hands-on experience than was common then, will see how complicated problems require intense and detailed effort to avoid failure in the field and capital blowouts. Build it and we will make it run, kicking the can down the road and borrowing operating and design concepts incorrectly on technological issues, or nine year olds on a sugar high making financial decisions are not philosophies by which to succeed with Greenfield Projects.

"IntroductionWE HAVE HEARD quite a lot recently on newer methods -of supporting roof, such as roof bolting or the use of metal props and •booms, but, with the exception of roof bolting, these methods are confined mostly to comparatively low, regular seams and even .bolting cannot be used to hold soft sides. Thus, where a seam of coal has great variations in thickness, or where it is faulty, or where the coal sides must be supported, nothing can wholly take the place of timbering with wood. This paper will deal mainly with the method of timbering such a seam, namely, the No. 3 seam mined by Brazeau Collieries, Limited, at Nordegg, Alberta, where the full height of a thick seam is mined in development. However, a few words on one or two other systems practised in Alberta when, in development work, a thick seam is only partially mined, should be of interest.Examples of Timbering in High SeamsThere .are several methods in use today for dealing with high seams of coal. The most popular is to develop the seam by driving road-ways in the coal by some conventional method, usually recovering the full thickness of the seam on the retreat. The following examples illustrate two variations of this method.In Figure I we have a thick •seam of friable coal, with a good roof, pitching about 30 degrees, which is being mined by taking the upper part of the seam in the development work, leaving the •bench coal in place. Using a robotic 4kW Nd:YAG-laser system, Inconel 718 (1 mm sheet) was welded with and without filler wire to investigate the effect of processing parameters, including power input and welding speed, on the weld geometry, microstructure and mechanical properties. By means of both nondestructive testing and microscopic examination, the weld quality was studied to determine the nature of the welding defects (porosity, cracking and bead shape) over the processing range of 3-3.5 kW for the power input and 4.5-6 m-min-1 for the welding speed. Application of the design of experiment methodology permitted the examination of the relationship between the process parameters and mechanical properties, from which the optimized laser welding conditions could be determined for joining Inconel 718. In particular, the research results indicate that Nd:YAG-laser welding technology can achieve defects free, mechanically sound welds with narrow fusion and heat effected zones.
