Recently, there is growing trend to build the high-rise and install curtain walls. Following this trend, we developed robot for building wall cleaning work, which moves along Built-in guide rail of building. Because it moves attached at building wall for cleaning work, it can be seriously affected by potential threats, like earthquake, strong wind, malfunction, and construction error of built-in guide rail. In order to cope with those threats actively, this paper presents the Fail-Safety system. The building wall cleaning robot consists of two moving system: The Horizontal Moving System which mainly do maintenance work, and The Vertical Climbing System which transport the horizontal moving system floor by floor. We apply the Fail-Safety system to these systems. The Fail-Safety system consists of sensors to detect external situation, and, with information of sensors, give instruction for what to do. This robot system is installed with four kinds of sensors: shock sensor, infrared ray sensor, laser sensor, magnetic sensor. First, shock sensor detects external shock during cleaning work. When shock sensor detects big shock, the robot returns to starting point to inspect how damaged it is. Second, infrared ray sensor detects damage of built-in guide rail. It is to prevent destruction of robot caused by moving along damaged rail. Third, laser sensor gives notice about where obstacle is. It is for robot to avoid crash with obstacle and decrease damage. Fourth, magnetic sensor detects magnetic points, which are installed in rail at regular intervals, and helps robot to find its position, based on location of magnetic points detected. If robot is damaged by external shock and its encoder, which gives information of location to it, is not working, magnetic sensor will give information of robot?s location to robot. And then, robot regulates its velocity depending on position of it, and safely returns to starting point. The Fail-Safety system in this paper is for building wall cleaning robot to sense external threats, and prevent getting worse. Applied to this active protection system, making safe environment of maintenance work is possible for robot system.

"High-level radioactive wastes are stored in large underground storage tanks made of low-carbon steel. The wastes consist of concentrated solutions of sodium nitrate (NaNO3) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH), and the radionuclides 137Cs, 99Tc, and 90Sr. The corroding steel microenvironment may produce localized reducing or oxidizing conditions that affect the solubilities of the species such as Tc(VII) and Tc(IV), which in turn modifies the kinetics of corrosion of the storage tank. To understand the influence of technetate ions on the corrosion of steel, electrochemical polarization studies of A 537 steel samples were carried out in 1 M NaNO3 + 0 .05 M S r(NO3)2 + 0.1 M NaOH with and without addition of HReO4 at different temperatures (24 – 85 °C). The concentration of HReO4 was varied from 0.014 – 0.04 M.INTRODUCTIONAqueous processing of spent nuclear materials generates a large amount of high-level radioactive wastes. The wastes are primarily salt solutions of sodium hydroxide and sodium nitrate which also contain fission products such as 137Cs, 99Tc, and 90Sr. Among the high level radioactive fission products, Tc-99 is of great importance because of its high concentration, long half-life (2.1 x 105 years), high solubility in geologic waters as technetate, and rapid diffusivity through the geologic systems. The solubility of technetate ions varies depending on the oxidizing conditions prevailing in the storage containers. High level radioactive wastes are stored in single shell or double shell tanks made of low carbon steels such as ASTM type A15, A516-70 and A537. Most of the available literature on corrosion of steel in simulated radio active waste environments pertains to nitrate induced stress corrosion cracking (Subramanian & Mickalonis, 2005). The corroding steel microenvironment may produce localized reducing or oxidizing conditions that affect the solubilities of the species such as Tc(VII) and Tc(IV). Corrosion of steel and formation of Fe(II) and Fe(III) will affect adsorption and reduction of Tc species. The radioactive species can irreversibly be sorbed on the steel surface by oxidation of Fe(II) to more stable Fe(III) and fixed as less soluble Tc(IV)/Fe(III). The solubility of Tc species is also affected by other factors such as dissolved oxygen, local pH, temperature etc. How the corrosion behavior of steel will be affected in the presence of Tc species is not clearly understood.Cartledge (Cartledge, 1960) demonstrated that passivation of iron can be achieved in the presence of oxygen along with suitable inhibitor ions/molecules of the general formula XO4 n-, such as pertechnetate (TcO4 -). The pertechnetate ion is univalent. Since it is derived from a strong acid, no buffering action can be expected from this ion. The redox potential of the reaction (1) is 0.738 VSHE (Pourbaix, 1974)."

The long-term slaking behavior of clay-bearing rocks in the field can be quite different than the short-term slaking behavior in the laboratory. To assess this difference, 12 replicate samples of each of 20 clay-bearing rocks, including 5 claystones, 5 mudstones, 5 siltstones, and 5 shales, were exposed to natural climatic conditions for 12 months. After each month of exposure, one replicate sample of each rock was removed from natural exposure and its grain size distribution was determined. Disintegration ratio (DR), defined as the ratio of the area under the grain size distribution curve of the slaked material for a given rock to the total area encompassing all grain size distribution curves of the tested samples, was used to quantify the amount of disintegration under natural climatic conditions. DR values of naturally exposed samples were then compared with the corresponding values of second-cycle slake durability index (Id2) determined in the laboratory. The relationship between Id2 and DR after, 1 month of exposure, exhibits an R2 value of 0.65 but the relationship deteriorates when DR values for 6 and 12 months of exposure are used, with R2 values of 0.63 and 0.25, respectively. However, when DR values for laboratory samples, computed from grain size distributions of slaked material after second cycle, are compared with DR values of naturally exposed samples for the three periods of exposure, the relationship improves with the corresponding R2 values being 0.61, 0.71, and 0.41. These results suggest that DR may be a better parameter for assessing the long-term disintegration behavior of clay-bearing rocks than Id2.

In 1997, damage as a result of Castrol R40 entering the INCO pressure carbonyl plant carrier gas stream was becoming increasingly severe. The oil in the gas stream was adversely affecting both equipment availability and process control resulting in rising unit costs. The main source of the Castrol R40 was determined to be the carrier gas and low pressure gas blowers. Plant personnel initiated a plan to prevent the Castrol R40 from entering the carrier gas stream by replacing the mechanical shaft seals with Ferrofluidics seals on these blowers. The following paper details a brief case history of the Castrol R40 in the carrier gas including impact on the plant. This will be followed by a technical discussion of the new sealing arrangement that was developed by plant personnel, Roots Blower and Ferrofluidics. Lastly, this paper will update the status of the blower upgrade project and document the results to date.

Demand for metals will continue to grow as global population numbers and prosperity levels steadily increase. Consequently, there will continue to be a need to design and construct new metallurgical plants. Business success in general requires projects to be financially successful and return appropriate value to their owners. However, in the metals industry, private and public sector financing sources have become very sensitive to the perceived inability of projects to contain costs and meet other business objectives. Thus, the capital for projects has become more difficult and expensive to obtain. It is instructive to note that Ernst and Young (2011) identified that: “Delivery of predictable project results bestows competitive advantage and market confidence to those corporations who successfully instill this discipline”. The implication for future projects is that they must be systematically developed to minimize perceived risks—and more importantly—to demonstrate that the risks are managed to achieve the business case. Then, provided that the project has been developed in a well-structured way, project success can again be defined as a project with: a final cost within 10% of the budget approved at the end of FEL3, when the project is properly defined and the permit conditions are agreed upon; a start-up date within three months of the definitive, scheduled startup date; production levels at 85% of design capacity within a year of starting commercial operation; production meeting the target environmental restrictions; and with zero lost time accidents during construction and startup. The plant design is one of many integrated activities required to achieve these objectives. This book represents a valuable link between the existing engineering literature that encompasses a wide range of engineering fundamental textbooks and design manuals and the project management literature such as the Project Management Body of Knowledge, or PMBOK® (Project Management Institute, 2014). It is evident throughout this book, that the design team is a small but essential part of a much larger project team comprising the project management, construction management, and construction contractor staff. This Notwithstanding all the debates on climate change and renewable energy, coal remains the world's no.1 primary energy source even in the 21st century. In 2011 alone, total output rose from 420 million t to around 6.6 billion t. Similar growth rates are also expected for the next few years. In order to meet demand, new seams are being tapped and others mined far more extensively. In most cases, this means a move from open-cast to deep mining, and extracting coal from ever greater depths. At the same time, extraction processes such as the room and pillar method are being replaced by longwall mining, which significantly increases seam yield and therefore output. The depth of extraction with new, modified mining methods is increasing rapidly around the world - in most countries, much more rapidly than the corresponding expertise. A trade in mining expertise has therefore developed alongside the coal trade proper. Germany relies on coal imports, but can export mining industry services and advanced mining equipment. Geological conditions in the Ruhr and Saar coalfields forced Germany to drive forward development of deep working for hard coal years ago. For 30 years now, Germany has been mining hard coal at depths of over 1,000 m, and excavation is now at depths up to 1,600 m. Deeper extraction and more extensive excavation posed new challenges for both miners and equipment. Intelligent logistics, modern roadway development methods and longwall mining with ploughs or shearers combined with optimised process coordination offered pioneering solutions - solutions to enable costeffective coal extraction in the long term without compromising safety. Countries such as Russia, the Ukraine, China and the Czech Republic, where extraction is now reaching similar depths, can now benefit from this experience: they do not need to go through the same process of trial and development, but can draw on Germany's findings and ultimately save on costs. Now, Germany is offering this knowledge and experience on the international market on a client- and deposit-specific basis to continue providing mining countries with safe and cost-effective coal mining solutions and secure the energy supply. The presentation gives a number of examples of how international mining companies have used expertise from Germany to better meet the challenges of deep mining.

"In certain instances, rocks around underground excavations behave as a plastic mass. This paper offers several solutions to predicting the mode of plastic flow around cavities and designing mining pillars where plastic conditions exist.IntroductionWhen stresses around underground cavities exceed yield limits of the host rock, the material often behaves as a plastic mass. The best example of this phenomenon is the behaviour of salt rocks in deep salt and potash deposits (more than 500 m deep).However, many other soft rocks exhibit similar properties. For example, Jeremic(1) described certain types of coal yielding plastically under high pressure. Alder suggested that granulated rock behaves plastically.The object of this paper is to propose a de sign procedure for mining pillars exhibiting plastic flow due to the combination of rock properties and in-situ stresses.Prandtl(3) mathematically defined a concept of a generalized, perfectly plastic substance, not possessing the property of strain hardening (Fig. I). Fires and explosions are not likely to originate in clean gobs above pillar faces steadily driven through a solid panel in order to effect a complete extraction. As. to the storage which such a process implies where the market is intermittent, its cost will never equal that of abandoning large pillars in a fully developed property. Much less will that cost, thanks to the big sizes obtained, ever approach that of cleaning wet and dirty crushings robbed at great expense from small pillars exposed to many years of roof pressure. Even thick seams under bad roof may be fully extracted without the help of filling material. Fatal accidents from falls of roof owing to the great height of excavations, losses in coal, and the danger from fire, have compelled operators in South Staffordshire, England, to discontinue the stall-and-pillar system at one time supreme in the district, and to successfully adopt the following plan: A retreating' longwall is run along the top coal, as the first working; the bottom coal is taken in the same manner, after the fallen roof has become sufficiently consolidated to allow the mine to be reopened. A similar plan is suggested in this paper in order to deal with the outcropping and pitching seams found in the Kootenay measures.

"AbstractAt the end of May, 1950, Imperial Oil, Limited, had completed a total of 192 D-3 wells in the Leduc-Woodbend field, 62 of which lost circulation in the D-3 zone for periods ranging from two hours to fifty days. The majority of the remaining wells •lost some mud without actual loss of returns. In addition, independent operators completed 69 D-3 wells, of which 9 lost circulation. Included among the latter is the now well known Atlantic No. 3 well, which blew wild out of control for seven months. The well was finally brought under control through two directionally drilled wells, but not before the derrick fell and the well caught fire. Practically all known filler materials have been used in attempt3 to prevent or regain loss of circulation, but none has been successful, except in minor cases. Ordinary sawdust has come to be the most commonly used filler material and is added to the mud before the D-3 zone is contacted. In cases of serious loss of circulation, the on1y successful method of getting returns has been the use of a series of small cement plugs.IntroductionThe Leduc field is twenty miles southwest of Edmonton, Alberta. Geologically, it is on the east limb of the Alberta syncline, in the homoclinal belt. The main productive zones are in the Upper Devonian formation and are known locally as the D-2 zone and D-3 zone, respectively (see Figure 1).The D-3 zone is a dolomitized reef with fair average porosity and permeability, and shows considerable evidence of vertical fracturing. Porosity is mainly due to moderately uniform development of vugs which are interconnected by small crevices. However, the formation is known to be, locally, extremely vuggy and in places cavernous. These latter conditions create very serious drilling problems due to the hazard of loss of circulation, particularly in the gas cap, which has a maximum thickness of 200 feet. The D-3 zone is contacted at an average depth of 5,300 feet."

"An experimental study of chemically enhanced filtration and dewatering of fine coal slurry with and without additives was carried out. The experiment involved determination of effect of slurry concentration, additives (cationic, anionic and nonionic), filter area, filtration velocity, particle size and cake resistance on dewatering and filtration using vacuum filtration cell. Finally, the rate of filtration and dewatering and optimum amount of additives used were determined under suitable filtration condition. Overall, it was found that the filtration and dewatering characteristics were enhanced by increased slurry concentration, larger filter area and larger particle size. In addition of additives, the kerosene was found to be best for enhancing the filtration which yielded cake moisture reductions of approximately 17% by weight. At optimum dosages, the final cake moisture contents were reduced by 3.6% and 5.8% by weight using the appropriate surfactant and flocculent, respectively.INTRODUCTIONFor India, it is estimated that coal constitute a principal source of energy for the next several decades. It is majorly used at thermal power plants to generate electricity and also to a great extent in steel and cement industry. It has been observed that its consumption is increasing so as to meet the energy requirements of the country. It has been found that in a coal preparation plant; approximately 20-25 percent coal is of the mined coal of the range below minus 0.5 mm (28 meshes). Generally, this fine fraction is discarded due to its high cost of processing and further utilisatisation is very minimal. But with ongoing research and development for advanced clean coal technology, various new techniques have been evolved to maximize the utilization of available coal. In recent time technologies such as column flotation, cleaning of fine size coal to lower the ash content and low pyretic sulfur is feasible at high recovery value. But in various researches it is found that one of the biggest hurdles in utilization of fine coal cleaning technology by the coal industry is the economic dewatering of the fine clean coal product. Thus, until an economical and practical solution to dewatering of fine clean coal is achieved, the efforts devoted to developing fine clean coal technology will be wasted. In this paper an effort toward enhancing and developing the optimum technique of dewatering and filtration of fine coal slurry has been made."

Abstract-To evaluate geochemical aspects of sheared zones, 35 samples of granitoid rocks from an area of shearing >5 km2 at Derehamzeh, Iran were studied geochemically. Relatively unaltered samples within the shear-zone area average 38 ppm Cu, 1.45 ppm Mo, 4.6 ppb Au, 0.21 ppm Ag, <1 ppm Re, 46 ppm Zn, 28.5 ppm Pb, and 0.34% S. Bleached, hydrothermally-altered samples are anomalous in Cu (>896 ppm), Au(>59.5 ppb), Ag(>24.4 ppm), Re(>1.28 ppm), Zn (>164 ppm), Pb (>218 ppm), and S(>0.9%). Some samples from bleached sheared zones that are highly anomalous in Cu (5000 ppm), Mo(23 ppm), Ag(74 ppm), and Au(200 ppb) are characterized by a typical sericitic alteration assemblage consisting of sericite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and granular quartz. The main anomalous zone extends over about 0.4 km2 in the southern part of the area. The strong Cu- Mo-Au-Ag association in the sericitic shear zones suggests a possible relationship to porphyry copper mineralization, similar to that found in northern Chile. Further studies on drill-core samples in the southern sericitized shear zones are required to determine if more extensive porphyry-type sulfide mineralization is present.

"Global population is a key factor in future energy requirements, especially considering the important elements of global energy resources, electricity production, the accessibility/non-accessibility of electricity, greenhouse gas emissions and the states of nuclear reactors. Everyday human requirements depend on industrial products, and industries need a considerable amount of electricity to run. Nuclear fuel is inexpensive and bolsters industrial growth. As uranium reserves are being consumed rapidly, an alternative source of energy in the nuclear industry is thorium. Here, primary energy supplies by various sources from 1993 to 2011 as well as estimates of future needs to 2020 are discussed. This study finds that primary energy sources are mainly fossil fuels, renewables sources, and nuclear and hydro energy. In addition, growth depends on increases mainly in renewable sources.Recovery of thorium from its ores by using hydrometallurgical routes were described and discussed. The final part of this paper was presented a case study of the thorium extraction from Korean monazite ore leach liquors by using Prieme JM-T diluted in A150 diluent as an extractant system. And possible separation of the thorium from rare earths (REs) and base metals were calculated by measuring of separation factors and finally, the recovery of thorium from loaded organic of Prieme JM-T was established.THORIUM IS FUTURE NUCLEAR FUEL?Global energy consumption is increasing everyday with the high population growth, high industrialization of numerous countries and the higher level of good and services consumption that follows it. If we look at specific sectors of the economy, oil consumption grew by 0.8 million barrels per day, globally, whereas the increase was 0.4 % for natural gas and coal 1.8 % for nuclear power and just under 2.0 % for hydroelectric power (Asheley 2009). Use of renewable sources of energy for power generation and transportation increased by 3% in 2014 (BP 2015)). Thus alternative source of energy must be identified and developed to meet this increasing demand. Thorium is a potential one for the nuclear industry."

Many factors affect the forge ability of steels. One of the major factors is chemical composition.' This article discusses the individual effects of alloying elements and the effect of the resultant modification of microstructure onforgeability. INTRODUCTION T HE use of alloy steels is expanding considerably and the fabrication procedures for such alloys are becoming more complex. An attempt is made in this article to describe the effect of alloying elements on the hot-workability of steels. Most of the data reported here are taken from the studies of Ihrig, Clark and others (Refs. 1-4). Chemical composition is not the only controlling factor. Grain size and surface condition of the material, forging temperature, and speed of deformation are also important. Certain conclusions can be drawn regarding the effect of various alloying elements on the hot-work-ability of forging stock. The results of hot-twist tests are considered useful in this connection as the number of twists to failure has been taken as the level of forgeability at a particular temperature. Stabilization of arsenic via the precipitation of large-sized scorodite (FeAsO4·2H2O) particles usually involves the use of expensive autoclave systems operated under high temperature and pressure conditions. Alternatively, DOWA developed a novel scorodite synthesis process (DMSP®) wherein the Fe(II) ions in solution containing As(V) ions were oxidized by O2 gas under atmospheric pressure. In this process, crystalline scorodite particles were formed via the formation of a gel-like precursor containing Fe(II). Based on this concept, in this study, we have demonstrated the synthesis of scorodite particles by the addition of Fe(III)-containing solution to the experimental solution containing Fe(II) and As(V) ions, without the O2 gas oxidation process. Ferric sulfate (Fe2(SO4)3) was used as the source of Fe(III) ions. Results indicate the precipitation of scorodite particles, comparable to that of the O2 gas oxidation method.

The Kiruna Mine, operated by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB), is a large-scale sublevel caving operation located in Arctic Sweden. Iron ore is extracted at a rate of 60 000 tpd from a four-kilometre long, 80-100 m thick and 60-degree dipping orebody. Actual production depth is 800 m under the top of the footwall and about 550 m under the average regional ground level. Because no support is left between the footwall and the hanging wall and despite the relatively low mining depth, extraction results in the formation of a huge stress shield modifying the original stress field and concentrating it just beneath the mining level. Effects of stress concentration on the rock mass are monitored through field observations and a seismic system. Severe stress-induced deterioration of openings is visible to a certain radial distance from the mining level: pillar crushing and fault slips are more and more common and extended. The seismic system, installed in collaboration with CANMET, confirms the field observations and completes them in the rock mass: fault slips and major seismic events are recorded. The system proves its effectiveness to outline the extension of the dynamic response of the rock mass, which actually seems much larger than field observations let think.

Petioles is a mining group with integrated operations in the smelting and refining of non-ferrous metals, and is also a chemicals producer. Peñoles is the world&apos;s foremost producer of refined silver, metallic bismuth and sodium sulphate and is the leading Latin American producer of refined gold, lead and zinc. The Met-Mex Petioles Zinc Plant commenced operations in 1973 with an annual production capacity of 105,000 t/y. Year after year the production has been increased, and at present, the production capacity is 240,000 t/y. In this paper, the leaching process, particularly the operation of the jarosite circuit and its effective removal of impurities such as arsenic, antimony, indium, selenium and tellurium, is reviewed.

Conventionally, carbon steel has been the primary material for salt mine headframe construction, protected by specialty paint layers to prevent corrosion. These layers require meticulous QA/QC during fabrication and erection, and the top UV protection layer typically loses effectiveness after an average of 10 years, necessitating ongoing maintenance. As headframes age, significant structural repairs are often required. Alternatively, stainless steel can eliminate corrosion concerns, though its high initial cost has limited its use in headframe design. However, when factoring in long-term maintenance costs, a 'maintenance-free' stainless steel headframe can be an attractive option for stakeholders. This paper compares the structural performance and economic considerations of painted carbon steel and stainless steel headframes, including initial capital and long-term maintenance costs. Additionally, it explores a hybrid approach, strategically using carbon steel in low-contamination areas to reduce initial costs and significantly minimize future maintenance efforts.

Potassium-argon age dating performed recently on intrusive rocks from Copper Mountain indicates that the satellite Smelter Lakes and Voigt stocks have radio-metric ages which are indistinguishable from that of the Copper Mountain stock, as determined by Sinclair and White (1967). The complex of intrusive rocks known as the Lost Horse Intrusions also yields essentially the same radiometric age, as do biotite-sulphide-pegmatite veins on Copper Mountain.
