This paper is based on the accident prevention pro-gram carried out in the coal mines of Alberta. It defines the role of the Alberta Mines Branch and of The Work-men's Compensation Board, and relates how a safety pro-gram was initiated. The formation of the Alberta Class 1 Mining Safety Council is also described. The responsibilities of both management and the individual worker are then outlined, and the main features of a successful accident prevention program are delineated. T HE purpose of this paper is not to repeat generalities and platitudes about industrial safety, but rather to relate the experience of Alberta coal mines during the past number of years in their efforts to keep accidents to a minimum. It has been learned from experience that many basic principles are as sound today as they were 20 years ago. How-ever the complexities of modern mining methods and the modern man or miner have created problems that did not exist then.

"CANMET’s research into underground coal mining is primarily conducted at the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory (CBCRL), established in 1981 to conduct safety research in underground coal mines. Located close to Canada’s largest underground coal producer, in the Sydney Coalfield of Nova Scotia, CBCRL’s program also includes the two western underground coal operations. CBCRL is a relatively small laboratory with a staff of thirteen — eight professionals and five support staff — with an annual budget of over $1 million. In order to maintain effective research response, flexibility is key and staff are increasingly working in project teams, crossing traditional section ties and also drawing from specialist expertise elsewhere within CANMET.CBCRL’s research activities have had a substantial impact on the Canadian underground coal mining industry, particularly in Cape Breton. CBCRL contributed to Cape Breton Development Corporation’s (CBDC’s) threefold reduction in lost-time accidents in the 1980s. Also, in the last four years alone, CBCRL’s work has enabled CBDC to save over $17 million in improved utilisation of reserves and cost savings. The work embraces the three traditional areas of mine environment, strata mechanics and mining technologies, however the current direction has been strongly influenced by recent external and internal factors. It is timely to review progress and recent directions."

"Quality management has a/ways played an important role at the Iron Ore Company of Canada; particularly since the early eighties when the iron ore markets favoured buyers as opposed to sellers.Since thot time, IOC's quality system has evolved from basic quality control to the Deming philosophy and its 14 points, and on through various other phases to the ISO 9000 series.ISO 9002 Registration was' first requested by IDC's customers and development plans were prepared in 1988. At this time, Quality System Registration was unheard of in the mining sector and TDC found itself struggling with the concept. The 1U!Xt three years saw the company develop a Quality System to meet ISO 9002 in a two phased approach, setting new standards for the mining industry when registration was achieved in December 1991.The company now sees ISO Registration as the cornerstone of its future quality efforts. IOC's quality system has been integrated with several other initiatives such as loss control and functional training, both of which focus on training and management the workforce to do the job safely, the right way.This paper addresses the steps required to develop a quality system for the mining industry within the guidelines of the ISO 9000 Series and the subsequent integration of other quality related initiatives."

One of the challenges of mine planning is to determine the most cost-effective replacement time for aging equipment. The lifespan of equipment, such as haul trucks and shovels, deployed in mining operations varies due to the nature of the material and ground conditions in which it operates. For engineering economists dealing with aging equipment, the options become an economic trade-off between higher maintenance cost versus the cost of new equipment. The discount rate plays a significant role in this decision; the higher the rate, the longer the economically optimal lifespan. Therefore, the ultimate question is: ?How can the relationship between the discount rate and the economically optimal lifespan be expressed mathematically??

"The consolidation of mine backfill by free zing is a concept which has been under study in the mining engineering laboratories at Laurentian University during the past three years. The proposed underground application of freezing involves the artificial freezing of in-situ backfill by means of a refrigerated brine solution which would be circulated through a circuit off freeze pipes. The most interesting findings to date are: (I) The uniaxial compressive strength off frozen fill is considerably higher than that of cemented fill in a ratio of 20:1 (aggregate to cement), and (2) load deformation characteristics of the frozen fill suggest that a higher ice content results in more brittle failure and that samples which have initially failed can still support up 10 one-half the ultimate load without additional failure.Although at this early stage a derailed economic analysis of the procedure has not been possible, a general evaluation of the costs involved suggests that the method could be competitive with the hydraulic placement of cemented backfill. Results obtained from laboratory investigations indicate that the freezing of backfill is a structurally feasible option .IntroductionGround consolidation by freezing is based on the principle of transformation o f water contained in an aggregate-slurry into ice, which act s as a binding agent between the bulk particles, and which results in the transformation of a granular soil into a ""rock -type"" material. The abrasive nature of the particles enhance s the strength o f the ice by providing internal friction. As a result of this internal friction, the chances of plastic flow of the frozen mass when in a loaded condition are reduced(1). T he strength of a frozen aggregate is al so dependent on the grain shape of the aggregate particles which may or may not promote particle interlocking(2) and on the temperature since, below the freezing point of the water/aggregate mixture, the strength of the frozen mass increase s with decreasing temperatures.In the shaft sinking industry, artificial freezing of loose , unconsolidated soils has been in practice for several decades. Shafts for Saskatchewan 's potash industry have been sun k to depths of 3000 feet by employing artificial freezing to stabilize the Blairmore Formation(3). The common procedure for freezing ground for shaft sinking is summarized as follows(4,5): I) 150 mm diameter bore holes spaced on 1.5 m centres are drilled in a circular pattern with a radius of 1.5 m outside the periphery of the proposed shaft."

These Ni-Co base superalloys combine the characters of two kinds of y- y' two-phase alloys (Ni-base and Co-18at%Ti alloys) and have higher tensile strength and creep resistance than C&W UNDIMET 720Li superalloy."

"A series of tests to optimize pressure oxidation- carbon-in-leach process (POX-CIL) of goldbearing flotation concentrate with the addition of sodium chloride and activated carbon were carried out. Flotation concentrate which was generated during primary ores concentration from a large Russian deposit was used for these tests. The tests were performed with different concentrations of sodium chloride. It was found that the required sodium chloride concentration for gold leaching was 5 g/L. The tests performed with different additions of activated carbon showed that the amount of activated carbon should be at least 6% of the concentrate mass. The rate of sulfides oxidation was 67.7–99.8 %. The highest gold recovery was 98.6 %.INTRODUCTIONThe majority of gold-bearing ores are recommended to classify as amenable to cyanidation and refractory. Processes at elevated pressures and temperatures have become increasingly important in base metals hydrometallurgy (Lodeischikov, 1999, 2007; Naboichenko, Shneerson, Kalashnikova, & Chugaev, 2009; Thomas, 2005).Current pressure autoclaves – cyanidation flow sheets are capital intensive due to numerous circuits and the use of environmentally-unfriendly sodium cyanide. The use of halide-based lixiviants during pressure oxidation of precious metals can be a promising technique for refractory sulfide goldbearing mineral raw material hydrometallurgical processing (Fleming, 2002, 2007, Kotlyar, Meretukov, & Strizhko, 2005).In this paper, we presented the results of the research on finding the optimum process parameters of pressure oxidation using an adsorbent for a refractory gold-bearing concentrate. A proposed flow sheet involves (Bogorodsky, Yelelianov, & Balikov, 2012):1. Gold-bearing sulfides oxidation followed by precious metals dissolution and the formation of gold and silver chloride complex;2. Reaction of the precious metals chloride complex with a carbon-based adsorbent;3. Precipitation of precious metals onto the adsorbent by EW and smelting of cathode precipitates into Dore bullions.This process allows POX of gold-bearing sulfides, precious metals dissolution and their precipitation on the adsorbent to be executed in one single vessel. This study found that the most suitable lixiviant was sodium chloride. The Rock Quality Designation (RQD) is a standard scalar measure of rock quality used in common rock mass classification systems (e.g. RMR, Q system). RQD is measured along diamond drill holes. RQD interpolation between holes is nontrivial. Despite the inherent limitations of drill hole data and the local complexities of structural geology, it is often the only information available for mining and major civil engineering projects. Therefore, maximizing the usefulness of this data is warranted. We derive a correction for directional effects that help reduce the bias and improve the accuracy of the estimations. The correction is derived with the aid of numerous simulations. It relies on simple information, the angle between the joint normals and the borehole axis (JO). A reference direction is identified as the borehole direction with smallest JO. A multiple linear regression model based on JO statistics in the various boreholes defines the correction model. The corrected RQD values are then interpolated. It is shown the method enables reducing the bias on RQD estimation by 50% and improves the accuracy of the estimates by 30%. The corrected RQD values show stronger spatial continuity than the raw values. The benefits of estimating the RQD indirectly by using joint frequency measures are also assessed.

This study investigated bio-liquefaction of lignite and its model compounds of thymol, bezioc acid and quinoline by a fungus, Hypocrea lixii AH. It analyzed, during bio-liquefaction, enzyme activity of oxidase, LiP, Lac, MnP and polyphenol oxidase, and degradation products by UV-Vis, FTIR, 13C NMR and GC-MS. The results showed that the bio-liquefaction percentage (by mass) of lignite was up to 44.86 %. The bio-liquefaction products of lignite were mainly aniline, amide, ether, carboxylic acid ketone and ester. The aromatic ring number was 1-3 with an aromatic carbon ratio of 0.328, which indicated rings opening, bonds breaking and oxidation reaction. By considering with the enzyme activity analysis results, it showed that LiP and Lac catalyzed reactions to open aromatic cycles and to break bonds; esterase to break ester bond; and peroxidase in oxidation reaction.

"Complex research of flotation concentrates of monomineral fractions of chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, pyrite, pyrrhotite included methods of adsorption of collectors, surface compounds by IR ATR, and surface films of flotoreagents by TEM. They revealed that the proportion of the parts of thionocarbamate (TC) and dithiophosphate had an effect on the adsorption rate of the components of minerals, on the presence of characteristic bands, and, what is an important, visualized surface film of organic flotation reagents on the particles of concentrates by TEM. The predominance of thionocarbamate in a composition selectively increases the adsorption rate constant of the components and recovery of chalcopyrite compared with sphalerite and galena. The highest flotation rate using TC is characteristic for chalcopyrite (0.62 min- 1) in case of individual use, and it's in combination with butyl xanthate (25% butyl xanthate or 3:1) 0.89 min-1 too. We studied the ternary blend - dithiophosphate: thionocarbamates: butyl xanthate. The increase of the proportion of butyl xanthate in combination reduces the contrast of the flotation rate among all sulfides.Practice flotation of refractory sulfide copper-zinc ores of the Urals (content sulfide iron - 75- 95%) confirmed that the use of a combination of selective collectors increases selective recovery of copper sulfide minerals up to 50% at the first fraction that is the conditioned copper concentrate. New selective sulfhydryl collectors resulted in high levels of recovery of copper into a concentrate - more than 90% - against 70-72% (butyl xanthate) from copper-pyrite ore. Low floatability of iron sulfides has been obtained by selective sulfhydryl collectors. Using weak selective sulfhydryl collectors can reduce pH into collective or selective flotation from pH 10-10.5 to pH = 7.2-7.5, which improves the quality of individual concentrates of nonferrous metals and their recovery. The same is true for polymetalic sulfide ore. The volume of gold recovery also increased."

Gold-bearing quartz veins with auriferou pyritic wall rock alteration haloes at the Komis deposit near Waddy Lake in northern Saskatchewan occur in fractured Archean intermediate volcanic rock flanking a plutonic felsic intrusion. Three ore zones totalling 1.5 million tonnes grading five g/t gold have resulted from a combination of patterns of high density of fracture-filling quartz veins created by contrasting competencies of four predominant rock types and preferential gold deposition in magnetitebearing andesite host rock. Pre-glacial surface weathering remobilized gold from a nearby pyritized intermediateto- felsic dyke to form the EP Zone with a wide variety of supergene accessory minerals. Much of the EP Zone wa eroded by glacial action to forn1 a highly anomalous gold-bearing till dispersion train which facilitated its di covery.

"There has been a continuous evolution with the use of pre-cast concrete elements in the construction of aluminum smelters. In 1990, Phase I of Alouette was built using cast-in-place concrete exclusively. Whereas, other AP 30 technology plants such as Hillside 2 in the mid-1990s used pre-cast concrete beams with cast-in-place floors. Mozal 2, in 2002, used pre-cast concrete beams with pre-cast partial-slab operating floors. Alouette Phase II went further. Not only were the potroom building beams and floors pre-cast, but the entire pot support system, insulating walls and basement jersey walls were pre-cast. Once the techniques for bending and welding the reinforcement bars and the design for attaching electrical insulating plates to the concrete was perfected, the challenge for the project remained only in the logistics of transporting the pieces to site and simple erection. The overall impact on the project was dramatic. Using prefabricated concrete not only allowed advancement of the schedule, but totally eliminated formwork, re-bar installation, and form removal activities along with the handling of all the materials involved with these activities. With the elimination of these labour and material-intensive portions of the job, exposure to work injuries was dramatically reduced. The most prevalent activity for lost time accidents is during the rough work associated with concrete formwork, placing concrete and form removal. Another area where prefabricated elements were successfully used on Alouette Phase II was for the insulating walls enclosing the pot area, known as the ""claustra walls"". Usually these walls are constructed in-situ using mortar and breeze block. Success was also achieved with prefabrication of the perimetric walls that are installed at the lower floor of the potroom. A big advantage of using prefabricated concrete in the electrolysis area is in assuring electrical isolation for the operating floors. Manitoba has now joined Ontario and Quebec in providing for new incentives and lower tax rates for the mining industry. A single rate of tax (to replace the former two-tier royalty), an investment tax credit and a relatively straightforward set of rules for calculating taxable mining profits are the main features of new mining tax legislation announced by Manitoba's Finance Minister Donald W. Craik in his May 15, 1979 budget address. On introducing amendments to reform The Metallic Minerals Royalty Act, the Finance Minister indicated that the new tax regime is intended to restore the Manitoba mining tax system to a competitive position in Canada, and should result in renewed investment in the province's mining industry. 1n this regard, the government could be right-there is little question that the new tax regime will produce greater incentives for the mining industry than the two-tier royalty system introduced by the New Democratic government in 1975. The proposed changes, contained in Bill 57, would largely be effective January I. 1979.

In this paper, the methods of bringing about this increase in productivity through the building of some twelve new collieries (producing some 15 million tons annually) and the modernization, reconstruction and extension of some thirty-six older collieries are discussed.

Black Hawk Mining Inc. has completed a comprehensive program on the prediction and management of acid rock drainage (ARD) at their Keystone Gold Mine (Keystone) near Lynn Lake, Manitoba. The program, initiated in 1994, followed a phased approach utilizing initial acid-base accounting (ABA) results and subsequent laboratory kinetic testwork to define site-specific sulphide oxidation and neutralization consumption rates in waste rock. Net acid generating waste rock at Keystone was defined through the kinetic testwork as waste rock yielding a net potential ratio (NPR) of less than two. A preliminary waste rock management program based on blending of potentially acid generating and acid neutralizing waste rock was advanced. Subsequent refinement of the management program followed the analysis of over 1580 ABA samples collected from individual blast holes during the initial bench development phase of the Keystone pit. Uncertainties in actually achieving adequate blending within the dumps at a mining- scale resulted in the development of a revised waste rock management program based on segregation. Recognizing that any successful management plan requires that the ARD characteristics of the waste rock be identified prior to in-pit blasting, the extensive ABA database was utilized to develop a rapid characterization scheme. By implementing a characterization scheme based on total sulphur concentrations and fizz rating, waste rock could be quickly segregated without delaying the natural flow of ore from the pit. Interestingly, it also became apparent that gold values were strongly correlated with total sulphur, such that traditional fire assays were supplanted with a simple and more cost-effective total sulphur determination. The program highlights the importance and benefits of collecting and exploiting data beyond that necessary to acquire appropriate development permits.

Erosion corrosion is acceleration in the rate of corrosion attack in metal due to the relative motion of a corrosive fluid and a metal surface [1]. The increased turbulence caused by pitting on the internal surfaces of a tube can result in rapidly increasing erosion rates and eventually a leak [2]. Engineers and scientists in different disciplines have worked for many years on methods of complete protection from flow induced corrosion or partially reducing corrosion of this type, and they have proposed or applied different countermeasures [2]. The accident at the Surry-2 nuclear power plant (USA) and other similar incidents have once again disturbed the scientific-technical community. This has forced the plant operating personnel and the management to undertake wide-ranging measures in order to discover on time, assess, and monitor such cases. In these extreme cases, protective coating and even metallic bulk material coating (the substrate itself) may suffer considerably from mechanically induced damage [2]. At high velocities, the "leaching out" dissolution reaction of particular, for example, steel elements at the solid-liquid interface become the rate determining step. One practical example for the difference between erosion corrosion and flow induced corrosion is the famous steam eruption from a Japanese [3, 4] nuclear power plant cooling system at the pressurized water reactor (PWR), turbine and in the condenser-steam generator connecting pipe. The rupture occurred in the carbon steel pipe connecting the condenser and steam generator. The damage occurred in the easily eroded/corroded carbon steel at a vulnerable location downstream of an orifice plate, In general, when there is significant reduction in pipe thickness through erosion/corrosion, distinctive patterns are visible, but those patterns were not observed in this case, Thus one can speculate that another phenomenon is possibly controlling, Fluid flow within pipes reduces the pipe thickness leading to an eventual rupture, The thickness reduction mechanism is erosion/corrosion, One example is "cavitations corrosion", Erosion and corrosion occur at the same time, and it is difficult to determine which one is dominant, Therefore, the term, "erosion/corrosion," is used [5]. In the atomic energy field, the terms "Flow Accelerated Corrosion" and "Flow Induced Corrosion" are also used. It is the purpose here to show that during flow induced corrosion a different mechanism may possibly be operating and in some cases it can be different from the well known erosion corrosion. Another example is fretting failures in early Canadian nuclear steam generators which was thought to be due to excessive vibration caused by high.

"The molybdenum mining process used at Mongolia Erdenet Company is a selective flotation of molybdenite from the copper porphyry ores in which the extraction of molybdenum comes as a byproduct of the ongoing copper production.The mineralogical composition of molybdenum concentrate is 99.4% molybdenite (MoS2), 0.09% molybdenum oxide (MoO3), 0.52% powellite (CaMoO4) and wulfenite (PbMoO4) and content 47.76– 47.92% molybdenum, 1.5–2.67% copper, 0.04% renium.From compared solvents sodium and carbonate and ammonia are like extracted molybdenum than hydrochloric acid, which contained 96.23–97.72 p.c. of its total amount. Hence to take into consideration abundance, cheap and suitable for analysis and processing the molybdenum concentrate ammonia is choosing as a basic solvent. By direct evaporation of ammonia extract solution, we obtained ammonium ortomolybdate, which contains 73.47% MoO3. INTRODUCTIONMolybdenum occurs in the earth’s crust in an abundance of about 10–14%, mainly as molybdenite, MoS2. Small quantities are also associated with other metals having similar chemical properties. Thus wulfenite (PbMoO4) is found in oxidized parts of sulfidic lead deposits in many regions of the world; powellite [Ca(Mo,W)O4] is a calcium molybdate usually formed from the modification of molybdenite in deposits containing tungsten as scheelite (CaWO4) and tungsten substitutes for molybdenum up to about 10%. Ferrimolybdite (Fe2Mo3O12·8H2O) is the product of oxidation of molybdenite in the presence of iron (III) compounds. Molybdenite is the primary source of molybdenum. Should demand for molybdenum rise so that additional sources become necessary, wulfenite, powellite, and ferrimolybdite may become commercially significant. Molybdenum ore is mined by underground and open-pit methods. A typical primary molybdenum ore body contains 0.05–0.25% Mo, and secondary ore bodies (copper porphyry ores) average 0.3–1.6% Cu and 0.01–0.05% Mo. Flotation remains the preferred and almost exclusive method of upgrading the molybdenite mineral to an industrial-grade molybdenite concentrate containing 90–95% MoS2, the balance being gangue (Habashi, 1997)."

Mineral resource statements are reported as tonnage and grades. While great care is placed on generating a reliable estimation of grade, the determination of bulk density for resource estimation is often overlooked. Often mineral resource statements are prepared using a simple average value of bulk density. While a simple average estimate of bulk density can be appropriate for some deposit types, an over simplistic estimation of bulk density can result in serious errors in tonnage estimates and consequently to an over or under estimation of metal content. The construction of a reliable bulk density model requires an adequate bulk density database in order to develop a good understanding of the variability of bulk density with grade and geology. A reliable bulk density database is also essential in determining the appropriate modeling technique to minimize the errors in mineral resource statements caused by incorrect bulk density determinations. This paper summarizes bulk density measuring techniques and draws on examples from various deposit types examining the basic principles of bulk density modeling and domain construction for each deposit type. Examples are presented of simple bulk density domains and more complex grade variable bulk density domains with a discussion of best approaches for minimizing errors in density estimation.

This paper presents the design of a model and process simulation of a vertical mill based on a population balance model. The simulator, Simulink, which is a systematic modeling tool within MATLAB, was used for the simulation. The model will simulate the real time variation trend of each size fraction in the feed material to the vertical mill, as well as, the size distribution of the batch grinding products. Breakage distribution and selection functions are calculated based on batch grinding laboratory experiments using Back-calculation method. The simulated size distributions correspond with those in the actual mill operation having a relative error of less than 0.50%. This work lays the foundation for future research on modelling and simulation of a closed circuit grinding operation consisting of a vertical mill with hydrocyclone classifier.
