"Several studies were performed on the atmospheric leaching of copper sulfide minerals in the presence of activated carbon and a new catalyst, AF 5. AF 5 is a carbon based catalyst with similar properties to those of activated carbon however much better mechanical properties. The activated carbon surface chemistry has been investigated in various studies; however the connection of the surface chemistry of activated carbon and AF 5 with the sulfide minerals during the atmospheric leaching process is not well-understood yet. Based on the surface analysis, AF 5 showed higher surface area than activated carbon (AC). Adsorption and oxidation of copper, arsenic and iron ions in the presence of different activated carbon were investigated. Adsorption properties of both catalysts were similar and 18-24% of iron, 12-18% of copper and 10% of arsenic adsorbed on the catalysts surface form 5 g/L Fe(III) and Cu(II) and 2 g/L As(III) at 80°C. In oxidation experiments, both catalysts reduced Fe(III) and Cu(II) ions and re-oxidized the reduced species in the presence of oxygen and oxidized As(III) ions. The addition of oxidizing ions can enhance the oxidation process kinetics and increase the catalytic capability of carbon.INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical processes of copper sulfide concentrates are under development and various different methods have been proposed to increase the atmospheric leaching rate of copper sulfide minerals. These methods include using different media, reagents, and catalysts. Among different methods, leaching of the copper sulfide minerals in the chloride media has some advantages over sulfate media. Smaller scale of operation, increased leaching rates, and lower sulfate formation are some of the benefits of the chloride leaching media over other similar media. Moreover, using ferric and cupric ions as oxidants and utilizing activated carbon as a catalyst has been proven to enhance the leaching rate of copper sulfide minerals effectively. Activated carbon (AC) and AF 5 (micro porous carbon based catalyst) are two of the most efficient and practical catalysts in copper sulfide leaching processes. AC can enhance the copper recovery of enargite in chloride media from 69% to 92% after 96 hours of leaching under the similar conditions (Jahromi & Ghahreman, 2016). It has been shown that AC at acidic pH can generate hydrogen peroxide in the presence of oxygen which can leach copper minerals (Ahmumada et al., 2002)."

"The Otjikoto mining and milling complex is 90% owned by B2Gold Corporation, and began commercial operation on February 28, 2015. The milling circuit operates at a throughput 3.3 million tonnes per annum, with an average reserve gold grade of 1.28 g/t. The ore is high in Gravity Recoverable Gold (GRG), which varies between 73-91%, depending on ore type. Overall gold recovery since start-up is 98.2%, with about 63.5 % coming from the gravity circuit as doré. 2016 cash operating costs, and all in sustaining cost (“AISC”) were $361 and $604 per ounce, respectively.During design, three ore types were tested for GRG content, and based on the high GRG value of all three ore types, the decision was made to treat the full ball mill circulating load by gravity. Once operating, the gravity circuit performance was characterized by performing a detailed gravity audit, which included the ore, cyclone classification, Knelson concentrators, and the Consep Acacia intensive leach system. The deeper ores contain significant pyrrhotite, and this created some unusual challenges that had to be overcome. This paper presents the gravity circuit design process, the circuit commissioning, and the audit results and ongoing improvements.IntroductionHeadquartered in Vancouver, Canada, B2Gold Corp. was founded in 2007. Currently, B2Gold has five operating mines, and numerous exploration projects in various countries, including Nicaragua, the Philippines, Namibia, Mali and Burkina Faso. It is situated approximately 300 kilometers north of Windhoek, the country’s capital, within the Province of Otjozondjupa. THESE troubled times suggest three reasons for maximum effort to control silicosis: (1) To keep to a minimum the ever-increasing burden occasioned by past deficiencies in this respect. (2) To effect the greatest production with maximum efficiency, which means at the least cost. (3) To preserve man-power in every way. Good control of the silicosis problem aids these aims. Inadequate control hampers all three. Insofar as our knowledge goes, silicosis in Ontario mines is caused by the inhalation of finely particulate quartz. It follows, therefore, that removal of dust containing this mineral automatically erases the cause. The achievement of this ideal is the aim of the mine operator. His best tool to this end is ventilation. This paper discusses mine ventilation from the viewpoint of dust control and it is hoped that in so doing there may result a better understanding of the part played by air in silicosis prevention. No attempt will be made to treat the subject fully. Instead, there will be presented certain salient aspects culled from field observations, the data in all cases referring to gold mines, unless mention to the contrary is made.

With respect to the mining industry, the budget offers some welcome changes in the form of' improved write-offs for development expenses and social assets; higher investment tax credits; and a reduction in federal sales tax. On the other hand, income bond financing of new mineral ventures may be restricted.

"Freeport-McMoRan Inc. (FMI) commissioned the expansion of the Morenci Metcalf concentrator in 2014. The concentrator included many design and equipment innovations, including the first-of-its-kind Metso Hydraulic Roll Crusher (HRC), variable speed ball mills and variable speed crushers. In addition to the innovative design, FMI commissioned the Metso APC team to design a realistic process simulator and the plant APC. The process simulator was utilized to train operators before commissioning, which led to a smoother plant start up. The plant APC utilized the concept of dynamic constraint control, which controls the feed to the primary ball mills by “pulling” the tons from crushed rock storage bins, which then automatically are filled by the upstream HRC and secondary crushing circuits. The primary ball-mill control also adjusts the water addition to the cyclone clusters to avoid overload and achieve sufficient grind size. The constraints include in-circuit constraints for feeder capacity, screen-deck capacity, ball mill power, cyclone mass flow, pump capacity and pump motor capacity. The APC system was implemented shortly after the start of commissioning and immediately demonstrated increased throughput and an ability to highlight and quantify process constraints and bottlenecks. The following paper outlines the control strategy, discusses system implementation, results and challenges.INTRODUCTION The FMI Metcalf Concentrator is located in Morenci Arizona on the site of the old original Concentrator. The new Metcalf concentrator started operation in May of 2014. This plant was designed for an average of 63,500 tpd (70,000 stpd), increasing the total Morenci concentrator complex production to a nominal 113,400 tpd (125,000 stpd). The process flow diagram is shown below in Figure 1.The process consists of primary crushing feeding a coarse ore stockpile followed by secondary crushing operating in closed circuit with vibrating screen decks. The screen undersize feeds the first of its kind Metso hydraulic roll crusher (HRC) operating in a closed circuit with vibrating screens. The primary crusher is a Metso 60x110 gyratory crusher. Secondary crushers are Metso MP1250 Crushers with variable speed drives. Secondary crusher discharge is recycled to the dry screen feed bin and screened with oversize returning to secondary crushing and undersize feeding the Metso HRC3000. The product from the 3.0 meter X 2.0 meter roll crusher is wet screened with the undersize feeding the grinding circuit, which is comprised of two each 24-foot diameter by 40- foot-long variable speed ball mills running in parallel with each in closed circuit with a cyclone bank of 12 cyclones. The wet screen oversize is recycled to the HRC feed bin."

Stillwater Mining Company commenced construction and development of the East Boulder underground mine in 1998. This new PGM mine is situated adjacent to the East Boulder River approximately 35 miles south of Big Timber, Montana. Project planning and development incorporated detailed collaboration between the regulatory agencies, concerned citizens and mine personnel. A unique ?good neighbour agreement? was established with a local environmental group who have become actively involved in the review of ongoing site development and the implementation of environmental and compliance monitoring. Environmental management systems allow for integrated management of tailings, waste rock and water in order to minimize surface disturbances and to prevent adverse impacts to the East Boulder River. Long-term site development plans contemplate implementation of comingled waste rock and paste tailings. Water management capabilities allow biological treatment of all excess mine water in order to reduce nitrogen loadings prior to land application disposal by means of spray evaporation, snow making and land application. The comprehensive waste and water management plans have also been integrated with staged mine development and interim reclamation requirements.

Drawpoint control is critical in determining the cutoff point for load-haul-dump mucking operations to minimize dilution. It is also necessary to ensure even mucking distribution and to prevent possible hang-up of material within a stope. A prototype production monitoring and reporting system has been developed for load-haul-dump operations in under-ground mines. The system generates accurate and timely information regarding mucked tonnages and drawpoint and ore/waste pass utilization. The monitoring system integrates a PLC-based load weighing system with a radio frequency identification (RFID) system for locating the vehicle. The system records the identification and time of entry and exit of each draw-point and ore/waste pass visited during a shift, as well as the weight of each bucket load. A trial of the system was conducted at the CAN-MET Experimental Mine near Val d’Or, Quebec. The monitoring and reporting system functioned as designed, with the exception that the maximum read range of the RFID tags under dynamic conditions was found to be a limitation. RFID systems with greater range capabilities have been identified for a second generation system. The system is the first of its type in North America to demonstrate that RFID tagscan be successfully applied to locate trackless underground equipment. Because of their ability to locate equipment and personnel within underground mines, RFID systems should be considered a key technology for future mine information and process control systems.

"This is a prelirr1inary report on automatic control at East Malartic Gold Mines.After installation of the cyclones in the East Malartic grinding circuit, the interest was aroused in the automatic control system for the circuit. Investigations were made as to the possibilities of such an installation. This resulted in a preliminary survey of the circuit by Milltronics Ltd and an analysis of the circuit by Mines Branch personnel. A study of the investigation and analysis indicated that a cost reduction and improved efficiency could be expected by the installation of an automatic control system in the grinding circuit. It was also indicated tl1at such installation should pay for itself within a year. This was the point that sold management on such installation. The need of three operators was expected to be eliminated .The installation was to consist of a central control panel, microphoncs on each mill, regulation of feed rate, pneumatic valves for addition of solt1tions, density control of the cyclone overflow, which is a grinding circuit product, rod mill feed box plugging detector and a conveyer weightometer for tonnage indication and control.As well as the elimination of one man per sl1ift, other benefits which were to be received but unable to estimate were: 1) More tonnage per clay by operation of the mills at the proper capacities. 2) Lower grinding costs. Less under-loading should result in less steel wear and lower pumping cost. In the condition of overloading, a coarser grind is obtained resulting in greater impeller and liner wear. The overloading and underloading showed up on the n1icropl1oncs. 3) An improvement in the recovery as a result of less over-load. The tailings loss from a coarser grind are not as frequent."

Current AG and SAG mill circuits have continued the trend to larger, fewer mills. These large mills place a significant additional load on the discharge systems and it has become imperative that the designs of these mill discharge systems are evaluated carefully to ensure maximum efficiency and have the capacity to be able to handle the increased mill discharge volumes. The current generation of multiphysics modeling tools allow a detailed analysis of AG and SAG mill discharge performance. The combination of Discrete Element Method modeling and Computational Fluid Dynamics allows the designer to model in detail all aspects of a mill discharge performance. This includes a detailed description of the build-up of solids and slurry in a mill discharge, the recycle of material back into the mill through the grates, the relative wear rates and the occurrence of overloading at the pinch points. These tools allow intelligent decisions to be made regarding the type of discharge arrangement, pan lifter geometry, and discharge cone design, so as to ensure that the discharge is capable of handling the duties required for a specific installation. This paper details the current state of the art in these modeling tools, and provides an overview of some recent applications.

The expansion of the mining industry, with other industries, of course, is dependent upon a supply of fresh capital from year to year. Mining is a speculative form of investment, though there is a wide range of risk as between indiudual undertakings. All of the leading financial writers, nowadays, agree that expansion is being seriously interfered with by the unprecedented load of taxation Canadians are carrying. Individuals have less for investment and corporations are obliged to defer necessary expenditures in order that the demands of the taxing authorities may be met. Naturally, speculative investments such as mining exploration suffer first. Undoubtedly, a great deal of cash raised by taxes, if left in the hands of individuals and corporations for investment and expansion, would have been far more beneficially used and would have developed the country more than any use made of it by the government, in the way of bonusing new industries, or the undertaking of large schemes of development. Government undertakings of this nature are often entered into without a proper knowledge of cost and probable return. Expert expenditure of the same sums by business men or corporations undoubtedly would generally produce more prosperity for the country as a whole. The absolute necessity for lower taxation is being increasingly known to the public at large, and eventually it is hoped that our governments will see the economic impossibility of continuing the present rate of expenditure. The successful Finance Minister of the near future will not be the one who can borrow the most money.

Network communication note is a cloud system for an earthwork project. It enables backhoe operators and dump truck drivers to monitor their own works in progress currently and performed up to the present, and to have opportunity to reflect on their own bearings in the earthwork operations, and then could increase their situational awareness to the actual work conditions. First, this paper presents problems and purpose. Secondly, the configuration of the network communication note is reported. The formation of small bubbles in flotation is usually accomplished by the use of frothers, or sometimes is due to the presence of inorganic salts in the process water. The effective mechanism associated with the presence of these solutes is generally considered to be coalescence inhibition. However, recent work has demonstrated that the presence of frothers and salts also reduces the size of bubble at the initial formation stage. In this paper we adapt the same experimental setup to investigate the time that it takes for a bubble to form; for a known system power input, the energy to form a bubble can then be estimated from the time. The hypothesis is that the presence of frother and salt will reduce the time for a bubble to form, which can be interpreted as an added energy component being derived from the solute. Testing different types and concentrations of frothers and salts, the hypothesis is supported: the mechanical energy required to form a bubble decreases by about 10% in the presence of these solutes.

Copper electrowinning/electrorefining (EW/ER) is powered by direct current (DC) rectifiers that typically generate 30,000 to 70,000 amps and a bus-bus voltage of 200 to 500 volts DC. Tankhouses are designed so that DC current flows through “cell lines” which contain individual EW/ER cells electrically connected in series. Electrolyte composed of copper sulfate and sulfuric acid in water forms the “liquid conductor” that connects the metallic conductors in this circuit. In this setting, stray current is a DC current that strays from and therefore bypasses the tankhouse circuit by finding a path to ground, often through the electrolyte in pipelines that feed into and discharge from the cells, or through dried electrolyte (i.e. sulfate), which is also electrically conductive. Tankhouse workers can be exposed to shock hazards if they become part of a stray current path to ground. This presentation details examples of stray current shock hazards in electrolytic tankhouses and provides voltage and amperage measurements associated with stray current in these examples. A review of critical safety controls in EW/ER tankhouses that will mitigate the risk of employee shock from stray current is also provided. INTRODUCTION Electrolytic tankhouses are designed to deliver relatively large amperages of DC current to a series of electrolytic cells in which copper is plated out of solution using the classic anode-cathode pair geometry within each cell. Electrolyte is the “liquid conductor” that transfers current in between the metallic conductors of the cell. The metallic conductors include inter-cell copper bus bars and the anodes and cathodes themselves. It is sometimes forgotten that electrolyte as a conductor is capable of delivering DC current outside the designed circuit of a tankhouse. Stray current is a DC current that strays from the tankhouse electrical circuit by finding a path to follow other than the designed path. Safety becomes a concern when there is a risk of an employee becoming part of an accidental stray current path, thereby suffering an electrical shock. In 2016, Freeport-McMoRan (FMI) suffered a fatality at one of its copper electrowinning tankhouses. The forensic analysis concluded that stray current from the tankhouse rectifier contributed to the fatality. An employee accidentally fell into contact with a metal flange at the end of an HDPE pipe that was collecting cell overflow electrolyte from the tankhouse. DC current passed through the employee to ground, creating a shock that was judged to contribute to his death. The situation was exasperated because the employee was unconscious, and therefore was exposed to the stray current for several minutes before being found. In addition, the employee’s clothing was saturated with liquid, and the employee was found kneeling in puddled liquid on the ground. FMI immediately began an investigation into the root cause of the stray current that was measured at the scene. Sufficient electrolyte had accumulated in the HDPE pipe such that a continuous path was formed between it and electrolyte that was continuously overflowing from energized electrowinning cells. The metal flange on the pipe was the metallic conductor that carried the current to the employee from the electrolyte inside the pipe. Current then flowed through the employee to ground. Because of this incident, FMI undertook an extensive review of the hazards of stray current in EW/ER. FMI’s tankhouse workforce received a Tankhouse Electrical Safety training course developed in- house to insure worker understanding of stray current hazards. Tankhouse design changes were implemented to better insulate workers from stray current. Personal protective equipment (PPE) standards were also reviewed and changes made.

"This presentation will provide an overview and understanding of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and Ontario Regulations for Mines and Mining Plants. It includes discussions on the history and practical development of the standards and an overview of engineering best practices from a construction, maintenance and operational viewpoint. INTRODUCTION Ontario is one of the safest mining jurisdictions in the world and has some of the most comprehensive regulations for the construction, operation and maintenance of a mine. In the USA, several operators have adopted some or all of the practices prescribed by the Ontario Regulations as an internal procedure. Experience has demonstrated that these plants are indicating less unplanned downtime and fewer issues with MSHA inspectors in their hoist plants. HISTORY AND THE REGULATIONS Both Canada and the USA have had some form of laws governing the operation of mines since the late 1890s. The paths of legislation have run in reasonably parallel lines, continually improving the health and safety conditions in the mining industry. Ontario Mine Health and Safety In the 1970s the accident rates in mining were higher than any other industrial sector; this prompted a Royal Commission on the Health and Safety of Workers in Mines (the Ham Report). The recommendations of this report, published in 1976, generated several changes in the regulations regarding worker safety in mines. Following the release of the Ham report, the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS) was passed by the Legislature in 1978. The Act is a set of comprehensive laws governing almost all Ontario workplaces, and it replaced separate laws governing different industrial sectors. OHS is enforced by the Ministry of Labour (MOL), and this discussion will focus specifically on Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act, R.R.O. 1990, Regulation 854, Mines and Mining Plants, Part X Mine Hoisting Plant (Ontario Regulations). USA Mine Health and Safety A coal mine explosion in West Virginia and medical studies on occupational disease led to the 1969 Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act (Coal Act). The Coal Act was the most comprehensive and stringent Federal legislation governing the mining industry to date. The Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) was formed, following the 1973 Act, as a new departmental agency to assume the enforcement of safety and health in mines. The Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 (Mine Act) transferred enforcement responsibilities from the Department of the Interior to the Department of Labor and named the new agency the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). This agency enforces the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), and this discussion refers to CFR Title 30 Mineral Resources, Chapter I Mine Safety and Health Administration, Department of Labor, Subchapter K—Metal and Non-metal Mine Safety and Health (MSHA)."

"In this work, the kinetics of ferric-ferrous redox reaction on a passivated sphalerite electrode is studied by the application of chronoamperometry method in 0.5 mol L-1 H2SO4 solution. The electrochemical behaviour of ferric and ferrous couple was investigated on two sphalerite minerals acquired from two different geological regions (Iran and Canada). The carbon paste electrode (CPE) of sphalerite was initially prepared and passivated in 0.5 mol L-1 H2SO4 solution and after reaching the steady-state condition, ferric and ferrous sulfate solution was added. The registered current density differences between the current density of the passivated electrode and that of the electrode in the iron salts added solution were interpreted for kinetics of ferric-ferrous reduction-oxidation reaction. The equilibrium potential for ferric-ferrous couple on sphalerites surface was about 500 mV vs. Ag/AgCl. The exchange current density (i0) for ferric-ferrous redox reactions on the sphalerite samples had the same magnitude of 10–6 A cm–2. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements at 550 mV vs. Ag/AgCl illustrated that sphalerite oxidation was controlled by two charge transfer process in both of Fe-free and Fe-containing solutions. The charge transfer resistance remarkably decreased when Fe salts added to the 0.5 mol L-1 H2SO4 solution, owing to the ferric-ferrous redox reactions being the predominant reactions on sphalerite surface.INTRODUCTION Direct atmospheric leaching processes for sphalerite concentrates are performed by reduction of an oxidant (e.g. ferric ion and oxygen) and oxidation of sphalerite to zinc ions. The general recycling process of tungsten scrap to produce tungsten raw materials (tungstic acid, ammonium paratungstate (APT) and WO3) have been carried out by the oxidation, milling, sodium-fusion, dissolution, and extraction processes. Many studies on the high temperature oxidation of tungsten scrap have investigated various aspects such as swelling kinetics, fracture resistance, and the effect of alloying composition. However, the accelerating factors on the scrap oxidation rate during oxidation were not considered here. In general, oxidized products were fused with sodium carbonate or sodium hydroxide to produce Na2WO4. Later in the process, solid Na2WO4 was dissolved in water. This process required considerable reaction time and was a costly process. Therefore, the aim of this study was to increase the solubility of solid oxidized products to produce Na2WO4 solution by hydrothermal reflux method. Na2WO4 solution was used to produce CaWO4 and H2WO4 by general chemical reactions with calcium chloride and hydrochloric acid. Ammonia solution was also added to the tungstic acid to produce APT. In this study, the effect of ammonia addition on the APT precipitation process was investigated in detail.
