It is designed to produce a metallurgical coking coal by lowering the sulphur and ash content of the raw coal using a heavy-media cycloning process to treat deslimed crushed coal, with scavenging of fine coal by flotation from the primary minus-28-mesh screen product. A secondary H-M cyclone scavenges a thermal-grade coal from the primary H-M cyclone tailing.

This paper is intended to deal merely with the commercial development of some of the principal non-metallic mineral resources in the three prairie provinces- Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Coal is not included in this summary. Building Stone First and foremost, mention may be made of the building stone now being produced at Tyndall, Manitoba. This is a mottled limestone and is declared by experts to be one of the finest building stones in America, both as regards durability and appearance. It has been used very extensively both for exterior and interior work, not only in western Canada, but also in the principal cities as far east as Montreal. The stone is the "'Upper Mottled Limestone", which forms the summit of the Trenton (Ordovician) strata in the Lake Winnipeg basin. Quarries are at present being operated at Garson and Tyndall . The area where this stone is known to be available extends in a north and south direction for a distance of three miles, and the main productive ridge is probably about one half mile wide. The outlook for the future of the industry is extremely promising, as the stone is becoming increasingly popular in Eastern Canada, more particularly for interior work.

A monolithic caisson is one of the major structural components commonly used in the construction of docks, breakwaters, and container terminal quay walls. Since the structure of monolithic caissons is typical and somewhat simple, its design process is also typical and repetitive, but still time consuming. To reduce the total time and enhance productivity, we developed a parametric model in Revit to automatically generate a 3D model of a monolithic caisson. It is designed to generate the Revit model of a caisson with concrete body and reinforcing bars. The size of caisson, the number of reinforcing bars, and the space between reinforcing bars are automatically changed when users update parameters. This paper presents how we developed this parametric family in Revit for monolithic caisson design and how it would enhance its design process.

Drilling is a common process in mining and petroleum engineering applications which have different objectives. For example, drilling deep boreholes in tight gas formations and gas shales is becoming more popular in the oil and gas industry. By contrast, drilling deep small sized holes for mineral exploration in hard rocks is performed to obtain samples for grade analysis purposes. In both applications optimising the drilling process includes using the most effective operating parameters such as rotation speed and weight-on-bit in order to maximise the rate of penetration. Obtaining the optimum drilling parameters requires sensitivity analysis over a range of data, which would be costly and time consuming during real field operations. Therefore, conducting several experimental simulations in the lab would be very beneficial before field operations begin. A drilling rig was designed and developed to simulate various drilling scenarios. The rig works in conjunction with an existing true triaxial stress cell (TTSC) which is in use for different petroleum related applications. The rig allows drilling into a cubic rock sample of up to 300 mm size. Three independent stresses can be applied to the sample to simulate real in-situ field stress conditions while the sample may be saturated with fluid. A significant feature of the rig is its ultra-high speed rotation which can rotate up to 8000 rpm: this is to simulate hard rock drilling for mineral exploration applications where large weight-onbit could damage the bit cutters. With the proposed design, a drilling fluid of any type can be circulated in the simulated borehole similar to the real situation, to study its effect on drilling performance. The TTSC drilling lid is equipped with torque and drag measurement systems which are two important drilling parameters to be recorded during drilling operation. It is believed that this new drilling rig will open opportunities for performing major new applied research in the area of more efficient drilling in both oil and gas bearing formations and mineral exploration applications.

"Simple classification systems are now being used which will describe adequately the surface vegetation, the topography and the peat for any muskeg condition. Good progress is being made in determining some of the mechanical properties of muskeg and it is apparent that the science of soil mechanics will apply largely to these studies. Correlation is also indicated between shear strength as determined by the shear vane tester and vehicle performance. Several tracked vehicles are now available which perform well in muskeg and advances in this field have come rapidly in the past few years. Testing is under way on the largest of all muskeg vehicles -the thirty-five ton Musk Ox. This vehicle will fill the last gap for the oil industry and will make possible the movement of large drilling rigs at any season of the year."

"OUR INTEREST in estimates of world reserves of lead and zinc is focussed mainly on the information they give about the sufficiency of metal supplies for the future. However, we soon realize that the estimates can be interpreted in several different ways. Accordingly, it is necessary to have some under-standing of the elements represented by a compilation of world re-serves, and we will start by examining the accuracy of the estimates and what they attempt to measure.Variations in Estimates of the ReservesIf we study the estimates of world reserves that have been published in recent years, we note immenediately that they vary over a considerable range. For example, an article by Shea in 1947 gave world reserves as about 36 million tons of lead and 60 million tons of zinc. Shea did not in elude the United States but I have added to his totals the estimates made by the Bureau of Mines for that country in arriving at the foregoing figures. For approximately the same date, the American Zinc Institute and the Lead Industries Association reported world reserves as about 50 million tons of lead and 77 million tons of zinc. A comparison of the two sets of figures shows a mean variation of 30 per cent. For individual countries the difference between estimates can be even larger. A few years ago the estimate of Canada's reserves made by the United States Bureau of Mines was 7.4 million tons of lead and 14.0 million tons of zinc, while the Gordon Commission reported 1 O. 7 million tons of lead and 26.0 mil-lion tons of zinc. In this case the mean variation was 55 per cent."

ALBERTA has been generously endowed with oil, natural gas, coal and water power, thus giving power producers a wide choice in the type of plant and fuel which can be used. Therefore, with such a variety of energy sources to choose from, why was coal selected as the primary fuel at Calgary Power's Wabamun steam plant? This part of the paper will cover the circumstances that led the Company to decide in favour of coal. The second part, to be presented by C. F. Doerr, will describe how the Wabamun coal mine has been developed to supply the large fuel requirements of the power plant. Before considering the Wabamun plant, we require a general under-standing of? the Company's electric system and load. Power is fed into a 5,100-mile high-voltage transmission grid from eleven hydroelectric plants and from the Wabamun steam electric plant. Introduction It is only fitting on this occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the incorporation of the Institute that we should indulge in a bit of retrospection and review the progress that has been made within this period in the various branches of the mining industry- progress that is so closely associated with the members of this Institute. Such a moment of retrospection will enable us better to appreciate the present status of the industry and to perceive more clearly the trends that should guide us in making sound plans for the future. The past half century has been a period of amazing industrial progress in Canada. In this period, the economy of our country has changed from one based chiefly on agriculture and the export of raw materials, to an economy based largely on a well integrated manufacturing industry. In all' o( these major developments, industrial minerals have played an important part and will play an increasingly, important part in the future. By ?industrial minerals? we mean the various non-metallic minerals (exclusive of fuels) as well as the rocks, sands, and clays used for industrial purposes. They are now used so widely and in such large quantities that modern industry could not function without them, and their continued availability at low cost is vital to the industrial future of Canada. The key position occupied by industrial minerals in modern Canadian industry was well illustrated two years ago when a strike occurred in the only Canadian plant producing soda-ash and calcium chloride at a time when those materials were already in short supply and unavailable from other sources. Within a short time of the shutdown of this plant, in which the two principal raw materials are limestone and salt, the great aluminium reduction plants on the Saguenay river were forced to curtail operations because of the lack of soda-ash, essential to the process of extracting aluminium from its ore. Automobile production, already harassed by a shortage of steel, was further hampered when glass for windshields and windows could not be supplied because the glass industry was slowed down almost to a standstill for want of soda-ash. Soap became almost unobtainable both to the housewife and to industrial users, because soda-ash is required in its manufacture. As a consequence of the soap shortage, the production o synthetic rubber at Sarnia was threatened because soap in large quantities is essential to the polymerization process. Motorists on gravelled highways all over Eastern Canada drove through clouds of dust because calcium chloride, used for dust laying, was not to be had. There were other cases of dislocation of industry related to the shutdown of this particular plant, but the above illustrates the wide ramifications of industrial minerals in modern industry. However, it is extremely doubtful if many Canadian citizens realized that these apparently unrelated happenings were connected in any way with limestone and salt.

Although most in situ operations in Alberta do not encounter significant problems during resource extraction, there have been a few documented occurrences of oil or steam releases as a result of compromised caprock seals. The objective of the Oil Sands Caprock Integrity Project (OSCRIP) is to characterize the units above and below bitumen zones to determine which geological factors affect the quality of the caprock seal. In addition, geomechanical properties and stress measurements of the bitumen reservoir and overlying units will be examined to provide a better picture of the containment conditions in which in situ operations occur. The information from this study will aid regulatory staff and industry in determining the zone-specific geological and geomechanical factors that could affect the design, operation, and feasibility of in situ recovery projects. The OSCRIP study area (Townships 87 to 99 and Ranges 1 to 13, West 4th Meridian) encompasses the surface mineable area, the northeast extent of the Wabiskaw-McMurray bitumen deposit and the Clearwater Formation, as well as a wide band of the Devonian salt-dissolution zone. Regional geological mapping of the Cretaceous strata focuses on the spatial extent and thickness of the caprock seal. Mapping of the underlying Devonian strata is targeted at better understanding the potential effects of salt dissolution and collapse of overlying strata on the integrity of the caprock seal. Examination of LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) bare earth DEM in the study area has revealed localized depressions that may represent sinkholes rooted in subsurface collapse features in Devonian carbonate and evaporite strata. Mapping the location and understanding the timing of salt dissolution-related features and deformation in the Devonian strata will help address questions about the possible effect that geological structures, such as sinkholes, have on the integrity of the caprock, as well as the potential for localized variations in the stress regime of the bitumen zone and overlying units. The stress regime in units above 350 m is such that any induced fractures are believed to be horizontal, and therefore, there would appear to be no mechanisms that would allow these fractures to reach the surface. However, recent incidents have shown that vertical pathways can occur, linking the subsurface to the surface. The final phase of the project will evaluate the changes that may occur in the stress regime under thermal operating conditions in the study area.

The mine is accessed from Lac du Bonnet which is linked to the provincial road system.Brief Description of OperationTantalum Mining Corporation of Canada Ltd. operates an underground mine employing ramp access, room and pillar mining, and shaft hoisting for the production of tantalum, lithium and cesium minerals. Daily campaigned crushing of the tantalum and lithium ores supply separate concentration circuits. Tantalum recovery employs conventional gravity equipment together with recently developed centrifugal concentration methods. All tantalum concentrates go to Cabot Performance Materials for the production of tantalum chemicals and metal. Lithium minerals are recovered using heavy medium separation and silicate flotation to produce spodumene and montebrasite/amblygonite concentrates. The lithium concentrates are shipped worldwide for use in ceramics, specialty glass and mold powders. Cesium processing involves the dry grinding of pollucite as feed stock for the recently built on-site chemical plant dedicated to tl1e production of cesium formate, a high-density drilling fluid for use in the oil industry."

"Abstract-The Voisey’s Bay Ni-Cu-Co deposit was discovered in late 1994 as the result of prospecting initiated in the summer of 1993. By July 1995, proven mineable reserves were 31.7 x 106 tonnes grading 2.83% Ni, 1.68% Cu and 0.12% Co, and current total resources in all categories are quoted to be in the order of 150 X 106 tonnes. The deposit is associated with a body of troctolite belonging to the Nain Anorthosite (1.35 Ga - 1.29 Ga) suite, which was emplaced across the boundary between the Proterozoic "Rae" Province to the west and Archean "Nain" Province to the east.The deposit can be described in terms of three geological settings. The "Ovoid" is a 600 m long by 350 m wide by 100 m deep lens of massive sulfide, covered by 10 m to 20 m of glacial overburden, and separated from the underlying country rock quartz-plagioclase-biotite gneiss by a breccia of gneissic fragments in troctolite known as the Basal Breccia Sequence. To the west of the Ovoid lies the "Western Extension", comprising disseminated and massive sulfides in a north-dipping sheet of troctolite which ranges from upper unmineralized troctolite down through troctolite with increasing amounts of sulfide (up to 50%), to massive sulfide (in some places only), and then to Basal Breccia Sequence. East of the Ovoid, the troctolite sheet broadens out into a troctolite intrusion, within which occurs the "Eastern Deeps", a zone of massive and disseminated sulfide up to 100 m thick that is currently being explored. The mineralization of the Eastern Deeps lies along the line of intersection of a feeder sheet with the base of the intrusion. The current interpretation is that the three geological environments represent different erosional levels through a single mineralized intrusion. In this model, the deepest erosional level lies to the west and exposes the feeder to surface, whereas the Ovoid represents the base of the intrusion at surface, and the Eastern Deeps the base of the intrusion overlain by 600 m to 900 m of troctolite. Sulfides and gneissic fragments were brought up by magma flowing quickly through the feeder, and settled out where the flow rate decreased as the sulfide-bearing magma mixed with magma already emplaced in the intrusive body."

"The mining and processing of mineral ores is a very old industry which is steeped in tradition. Rising demand for metals has recently forced the exploitation of lower-grade orebodies which require extensive beneficiation. The high capital expenditures involved, together with market pressures for high-quality concentrates and pellets, have forced the development of new process technologies which are heavily dependent on automatic process control. Development of suitable instrumentation has been rapid and it is being applied to mining processes today with a high degree of sophistication. The drive for higher efficiency and profitability goes on and has reached a level at which modern digital computers appear to be the only answer. However, the efficient application of a digital process computer is extremely complicated and is therefore approached by the mining industry with considerable hesitation.Some of the benefits promised by the digital computer can be obtained today by other means, which are more manageable and can provide immediate payoff. The result would be a building-block system which would utilize the digital process computer as its final component, to perform true plant optimization, free from routine chores."

The Alcan Bayer Process Experimental Centre (BEC) is an essential development tool for the Bauxite & Alumina researchers at the Alcan Arvida Research and Development Centre in Jonquiere, Quebec. Between the laboratory tests and the industrial prototypes or the industrial applications, the BEC is a key element for technology transfers. The Bayer process is the extraction of aluminium oxide (or alumina) from the bauxite ore. The Bayer Experimental Centre's history and flowsheet are presented. The major pieces of equipment are described. Safety and design considerations are presented. Finally, examples of applications, double digestion and pressure decantation, are briefly described.

"At most operating mines, geostatistical are reserve estimation methods have been implemented by head office or consulting groups . With recent advances in small computer technology it is now possible for a remotely-located mine department to independently implement a geostatistical package.This paper describes the evolution of geostatistical routines to calculate the mineral inventory for porphyry type copper/ molybdenum or similar are bodies. The problems encountered in down sizing the geostatistical routines to run using limited minesite computing facilities are discussed. The high quality of the results, in spite of some compromises to geostatistical theory, is emphasized.The first stage entailed the development of a mineral inventory based on diamond drill data. The difficulties in fitting variogram models to two metals, copper and molybdenum, and the shortcomings of the mineral inventory due to the mixing of lesser quality exploration data with data from more recent diamond drilling are discussed.To improve the ore reserve estimates for short-term planning, a mineral inventory was produced using both the diamond drill and production blast hole drilling data. This inventory, when compared to actual grades, was found to be quite satisfactory for short-term planning. The inventory also provided a reliable data base for long range pit design and financial planning. "This paper describes the theory, design, building, and testing of the passive magnetic bearing stabilizing system which is the core of the passive magnetic bearing system. The stabilizing system is made up of two large magnetic disks opposing themselves with a stabilizing disk in the center which allows the system to self-locate in a null position without the need for external power sources or sensors. When outside forces act upon the stabilizer, the magnetic fields interact with the stabilizing plate to return the system to its null position. Collaboration between two industry leaders has allowed an actual prototype to be built and tested providing real data to prove out the theory.INTRODUCTIONMagnetic bearing/stabilizer systems have many advantages over conventional mechanical bearing systems. These include near-zero drag losses and no need for lubrication since the rotating elements make no mechanical contact with the stationary elements of the bearing system. However all magnetic bearing systems must contend with a constraint known as Earnshaw’s Theorem in the early 1800’s, this theorem asserts the impossibility of constructing a stable, non-contacting, electrostatic or magnetostatic levitation system using only fixed charges or fixed magnetic poles, such as those produced by permanent magnets. Because of the constraint imposed by Earnshaw’s Theorem virtually all present-day commercial magnetic bearing systems are of the “active” type. That is, they employ electromagnets that are powered by amplifiers the inputs to which come from sensors embedded in the bearing system. These sensors are a part of a feedback loop that operates to keep the levitated rotating parts of the bearing stable and centered. The resulting complexity means that active magnetic bearings are expensive, require periodic maintenance, and continuously consume electrical power to energize their amplifiers and their electromagnets.Passive magnetic bearings are, of course, also subject to the constraints imposed by Earnshaw’s Theorem but they solve this problem in a straightforward and simple way, with only “passive” elements that take advantage of a loophole implicit in the derivation of Earnshaw’s Theorem. This loophole is that Earnshaw’s Theorem as derived applies only to static systems, i.e. an assembly of stationary permanent magnets arranged so as to levitate an object containing other permanent magnets. The theorem can be overcome if dynamic effects are taken into account. In active magnetic bearings the “dynamic effects” involve the afore-mentioned sensors, amplifiers, and electromagnets."

When Dame Nature shook her horn of plenty and distributed her bounties over the face of the earth, she blessed the Pacific coast with many riches, but with these she added many offsetting disadvantages or handicaps, designed, no doubt, to effect a proper balance between wealth and economy. Nowhere is the application of the law of compensation more aptly illustrated than in the matter of fuel and power resources. A glance at the map of the Pacific northwest will show that west of the Coast Range batholith we are bounteously supplied with coal, with timber, with water power, and with tributary resources of oil from California. Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, all contain large resources of coal; Oregon and California to a lesser degree, but, compensating the golden state for its deficiency in this respect, oil was placed in the treasure ,chest. Timber, of wide variety and in lavish quantity, covers the forests from tidewater to mountain slope, and within this protected watershed area flow streams which give the Pacific coast states the largest single share of the potential water-power resources of the country. Something over 40 per cent. of the total estimated horsepower of the United States is to be found in the Pacific states, and British Columbia has 15 per cent. of the total for Canada; but of this total less than 10 per cent. has been developed.

"Introductory and GeneralTHE Northwest Territories comprise all that region -of Canada lying between Yukon Territory and Hudson bay and north of the 60th parallel of latitude. For purposes of mine .administration the Territories are divided into three districts: Yellowknife, McKenzie, and Arctic and Hudson Bay. Mining recording offices for the respective districts are maintained at Yellowknife, Fort Smith, and Ottawa. The mine inspection for the entire area, and also for Yukon Territory, comes under the Federal Department of Resources and Development. Two mining inspectors are responsible for these inspections: the Chief Inspector of Mines, with headquarters in Ottawa, who makes trips into the north at least twice a year, and a Resident Inspector, stationed in Yellowknife.The Resident Inspector is constantly making inspections of active properties. This involves a considerable amount of air travel as the region is large and properties are widely scattered.Although there has been prospecting and staking of claims in each of the three districts of the Northwest Territories, actual mining has been conducted only in the Yellowknife district, and for purposes of this paper we are solely concerned with that district."
