Abstract -The Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag ore deposits of the Boundary and N-5 zones near Bathurst, New Brunswick, occur in a polydeformed volcano-sedimentary sequence that is part of the Ordovician Tetagouche Group. Massive and disseminated sulfides are hosted by an argillaceous to cherty sedimentary sequence that is stratigraphically underlain by a siliceous fragmental unit and is overlain by a feldspar-rich crystal tuff and related tuffaceous rocks. The deposits have a low iron sulfide con­ tent relative to that of most stratabound sulfide deposits of the Bathurst-Newcastle mining district. The ore is commonly associated with chlorite- and talc-rich sediments. The N-5 deposit is considered to be the fault-displaced extension of the Boundary deposit. The Boundary deposit is estimated to contain 891 000 t grading 3.310Jo Pb, 7.96% Zn, 0.32% Cu and 44 g/t Ag; the estimate for the N-5 zone is 330 000 t grading 3.24% Pb, 7.15% Zn, 0.33% Cu, and 37 g/t Ag. The ore is processed at 1000 tpd at the Heath Steele mill.

"The Hidden Creek mine is about l~ miles north of the north end of Granby bay; a nearly landlocked body of water on the west side of Observatory inlet; 90 miles north of Prince Rupert; British Columbia.The main haulage way of the mine at 385 feet above sea-level has been driven north into the somewhat precipitous end of a north-south ridge that rises from the tide flats between the east and west forks of Hidden creek. The outcrops of the principal orebodies, two prominent bluffs of stained rocks and sulphides, were higher on the face of the ridge and extended from about 530 to 850 feet elevation. North from the bluff tops, the ridge comb rose gradually to about 1,200 feet elevation. The name of the discoverer and the date of discovery of the Hidden Creek orebodies are probably unknown, but the discoverer is believed to have been an Indian from one of the reservations along Observatory inlet. The deposit was brought to the attention of John Flewin, Government Agent at Post Simpson, near the beginning of the present century. Mr. M. K. Rodgers, developer of the Nickel Plate mine at Hedley, did the first organized work on the deposits. Next the Hidden Creek Copper Company prospected the property. Rodgers acquired the prospect a second time, did more work, and finally in 1910 optioned the property to the Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company, Limited, at that time operating at Phoenix and Grand Forks in the Boundary district of British Columbia. The optionees stepped up the development work and brought the property to production in 1914. The ores were direct smelted until 1924. In that year a mill was built. From 1930 until the end of the productive life of the properties in 1935, all of the ore was milled and the concentrate smelted. From March 17, 1914, until July 31, 1935, the production from the Hidden Creek mine was, in round numbers, 18,000,000 tons of 1.70 per cent copper ore and 6,000,000 tons of low grade dilution rock. The Hidden Creek mine ""died with its boots on"". During 1934 the average monthly production was 146,377 tons of 1.06 per cent copper ore. For 7 months of 1935 the average was 161,750 tons of 1.03 per cent ore, and for the final month, July 1935, the production was 156,950 tons."

"The present contribution examines, in some detail, what appear to be the three outstanding features of the field occurrence of the conformable ""pyritic"" deposits. These are their association with fragmental volcanic rocks (and derivatives), their occurrence in sediments of near-shore formation, and their highly variable structural associations.In a recent paper it has been suggested that two such ""pyritic"" de-posits in New Brunswick may have originated as marine concentrations of volcanic base metal and sulphur compounds, and that many of their present features are the result of diagenesis, folding, and regional metamorphism. This is now put for-ward as a general explanation for the particular class of deposit considered.Such deposits should, on this hypo-thesis, be regarded quite simply as an integral part of the particular geological environment in which they occur -as a normal, though minor, sedimentarry type developed, char-acteristically, in near-shore and shelf facies of intravolcanic units formed along the margins of eugeosynclines. They should not be considered -as, for example, is required by the re-placement theory -as later features simply superimposed on a geological situation to which they are genetically unrelated. Where they are associated with folds and other structures, this may be attributed, from one in-stance to another, to mechanical migration during folding, weaknesses induced by pre-existing sulphides, and, occasionally, to fortuitousness.In the light of this postulated origin, it is suggested that the first stages in regional prospecting for deposits of this particular class should be broadly palaeogeographical. Later phases of the search should then be directed to the delineation of sedimentary facies and, finally, to the investigation of geological structure."

"The Carswell structure, located in the western part of the Athabasca Basin, northern Saskatchewan, has been extensively explored since 1967. This exploration has been successful and lead to the discovery, in 1970, of the D sandstone-hosted unconformity related deposit. By the end of 1984, five additional basement-hosted unconformity related deposits had been delineated: the OP and N discovered in 1970, the Claude in 1971, the Dominique-Peter in 1981, and the Dominique-Janine in 1984. The D deposit has been mined out; the Claude open-pit has already produced more than 500 tonnes of uranium, the development of the Dominique-Peter underground mine (first phase) has been completed, and production from the latter started in 1985.All six deposits are located in the southern part of the Aphebian metamorphic core, 18 km in diameter, which has intruded at least 1250 metres of Helikian Athabasca Group sediments during a cryptoexplosion event at 480 Ma, unrelated to the emplacement of uranium mineralization. The metamorphic rocks, affected by the Hudsonian Orogeny, are divided in two lithostratrigraphic units: the Peter River gneiss, aluminous gneiss series, and the Earl River complex, mixed quartzofeldspathic and mafic gneiss series. A well developed regolith profile is recognizable in the south along the contact with the sandstone and inside the metamorphic core sometimes associated with conformable sandstone beds.Basement and sandstone-hosted uranium deposits show many similarities:-linkage to unconformity;-mineralogy and geochronology with a first phase mineralization characterized by a polymetallic sulphide-uraninite-brannerite assemblage dated at 1150 to 1050 Ma, a second phase characterized by a simple sulphide-uraninite assemblage dated at 890 to 820 Ma, and a third phase characterized by a pitchblende-hematite dated at 380 Ma; and,-linkage to early Hudsonian structures with remobilization of these structures during intense hydrothermal alteration resulting in Mg chlorite-illite halos."

Les ESEE sont des évaluations scientifiques itératives du poisson, de l?habitat du poisson et des ressources halieutiques. Le programme comporte des phases séquentielles de deux à six ans de suivi, d?interprétation et de compte rendu au cours desquelles la fréquence et le type de suivi dépendent des résultats des études précédentes. Le programme des ESEE pour les mines de métaux est fondé sur un accord conclu à l?unanimité entre les intervenants. Les exigences du programme et les guides techniques connexes ont été élaborés à la suite d?une consultation multilatérale à laquelle ont participé les représentants du secteur privé, du gouvernement et des collectivités. Toutes les mines assujetties au Règlement sur les effluents des mines de métaux (REMM), aux termes de la Loi sur les pê ches, doivent procéder à une ESEE dans le cadre de l?autorisation qu?ils ont reç ue de rejeter des effluents. "When studying jointed rock mass deformation around underground openings it is of great importance to model correctly the excavation sequence during the numerical simulation. This is because for effective arching mechanism to develop in the roof minute block displacements must take place and some of the available discontinuities shear strength must be mobilized. If from the beginning of the simulation the underground opening already exists in the numerical model, block displacements into the excavation space will initiate and develop from time zero, before the initial stresses in the model have attained their actual initial level in the field. These initial block displacements are therefore artificial and exist only in the numerical model, not in the physical reality, and may lead to erroneous assessment of the stability of the designed structure, typically on the conservative side. We have introduced sequence excavation capabilities both in the numerical manifold (NMM) and the discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA) methods and show here the advantages of this modification using three different case studies, each illuminating a different aspect of this enhancement.We begin with the 25 meter deep 2000 year old underground Zedekiah limestone quarry below the old city of Jerusalem, Israel, which is still standing today unsupported with a free span of 40 m. We show that when the opening exists from the beginning of the numerical simulation the required friction angle for roof stability is 25 degrees, whereas when the opening is removed after all stresses and displacements in the model have been stabilized the required friction angle for stability is only 15 degrees.We then model the excavation sequence of a tunnel model representing a 2500 meter deep research tunnel in the Jinping hydroelectric project, China, in order to determine the in situ stress field at this depth by a grid search inversion of displacement data obtained using the sliding micrometer technology in the course of tunnel excavation. Thus we are able to constrain the in situ stress field at these depths where standard in situ stress measurement procedures are extremely difficult to execute properly.Finally, we use sequence excavation modeling capability to find the total height of the expected loosening zone around tunnels excavated through columnar jointed basalts which pose a great engineering challenge because of the characteristic dense network of slender prismatic blocks that transect the opening at a steep inclination. We use MPBX data obtained during excavation of a deep tunnel through such a rock mass to validate our numerical results and show that application of standard empirical guidelines for dimensioning rock bolt reinforcement in such rock masses may in fact result in very un-conservative design because existing empirical approaches typically ignore the anisotropic nature of the structure of such rock masses which, as we show, plays a very significant role in determination of the extent, shape, and geometry of the loosening zone around the opening."

THE EXCUSE for producing still another paper dealing with the oilfields of the Middle East is the overwhelming importance of this area to everyone, both inside and out of the oil industry. Figure 1 shows the area defined as the Middle East for the purpose of this paper. No description of what constitutes the Middle East is generally acceptable to everyone and, in fact, in many parts of the world it is referred to as "Western Asia". At the time ?the writer went to work as a geologist in the Middle East -this was in 1926 -there were just three known oilfields, namely, Hurghada in Egypt, Naft Khaneh in the Transferred Territories of Iraq, and Masjid-i-Sulai-man in Persia. Their combined producing rate at that time was around 100,000 barrels per day. Toda y, just thirty years later, some forty-two fields have been proven to exist, and a recent discovery in Syria -if commercial -may add one more to the list. Producing rates at the end of last year ( 1956) were approaching four million barrels per day. This sizable figure re presents nearly 23 per cent of the total Free World's production. What is more important still, something over 70 per cent of the Free World's proven oil reserves are known to exist in the subsoil of the Middle East.

ABSTRACT Although closure sureties cover works that are carried out during the existence of a mining company, certain liabilities are not known when the surety is established and become apparent only in a late stage of the closure phase, or even after the site has been relinquished. This paper supports the concept that these financial risks lend themselves to insurance solutions. Making insurance for unknown liabilities mandatory while defining unambiguous legal conditions could create a viable market for insurance products, provide a sufficient statistical basis for the calculation of premiums, and reduce costs.

This paper outlines the function of the Safety and Compensation Division of the Mining Association of British Columbia. After a general discussion of safety and the safety program now being followed in B.C., the author goes on to describe the wide-ranging aspects of compensation payments and company assessment rates. Special attention is also given to the problem of silicosis in mining operations. In appendices to the paper, the experience rating plan of the mining industry is compared to that recently adopted for the construction industry. Introduction The Mining Association of British Columbia consists of fifty-five member companies, including virtually all the producing mines as well as the larger exploration, contracting and development companies. On completion of an extensive study of safety and compensation in the mining industry, the Mining Association of British Columbia instituted a Safety and Compensation Division in 1954. "The operation of mineral processing equipments is intimately related to the mineral composition of the ore. However unit performances are usually characterized in terms of metal contents or recoveries as this data is easier to obtain than the mineral contents. This paper describes a method that combines the operations of material balancing and estimation of the mineral contents of the ore. The estimated mineral contents can be used for process analysis and diagnosis of operating problems.IntroductionThe ore that is feeding a concentrator is made of minerals that condition the energy requirements for the ore comminution and the performances of the subsequent separation circuit. Indeed a change in the mineral composition of the ore may lead to lower grinding mill throughput as well as lower recovery or grade of the economical products. Despite this relationship is recognized the mineral composition of the ore is seldom measured or estimated to provide regular information for the diagnosis of operating problems. Some methods such as the QEM-SCAN (Whiten, 2008; Lamberg and Vianna, 2006) are available to measure the concentration of the minerals in ore samples but the method is time demanding and plant operators usually base their evaluation of the plant performances on chemical assays of metals or elements since this data is easier to obtain from ore samples.Usually samples of the streams of mineral processing plants are collected on a daily basis to be assayed for strategic elements. The obtained concentrations are balanced to produce coherent data with the material conservation constraint and then used to characterize the day to day operation of the plant in terms of recovery of valuable metals and grades of the marketable concentrates. The behavior of contaminant elements can also be monitored from this data allowing the operators to explain for instance a lower zinc concentrate grade by a more important contamination of iron. However such diagnosis is only partial as the contaminant element can be transported by different minerals. Indeed the iron contamination of a zinc sulfide concentrate may be caused by an inadequate depression of pyrite or due to another iron carrying mineral. A possible way to answer the question is to determine the concentrations of the various minerals in the ore and produced sealable concentrates. Since measuring the mineral contents of the ore could be a demanding task one should consider to estimate this data from the daily chemical assays of the sample collected on the main streams of the circuit. Some authors have already investigated the problem. Whiten(2008) described a method to estimate the mineral contents of an ore sample. Lamberg and Vianna(2006) proposed a method to do a sequential mineral reconstruction followed by a material balance. Few of these methods account for the mass conservation of the reconstructed mineral contents."

"This paper aims to overview some mechanical and physical features of the gabbroic rocks. The study has two phases: filed study/in-situ measurements and laboratory work. During the field studies, rock block samples were collected from different locations of the study area to represent the different types of the gabbroic rocks. Either core or rock samples for various tests were prepared from rock samples taken to the laboratory. The unconfined compressive strength (UCS), indirect tensile strength (ITS), point load index (PLI), Schmidth hammer rebound value (SHV), slake durability index (SDI), sonic velocity (SV) and unit weight (UW) test were carried out either on the selected rock block samples or core samples.INTRODUCTIONThe geology of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been divided into three major rock units (Lippard et al., 1986); an autochthonous succession, allochthonous units composed mainly of Mesozoic rocks and include the Sumeini Group (concomittent slope sediments), Hawasina Complex (basinal sediments) and the Semail ophiolite nappe (massive slice of former oceanic crust), that were emplaced as a series of thrust nappe in the Late Cretaceous and Neo-autochthonous sequence of Maastrichtian and Lower Tertiary sediments.The Semail Ophiolite (600 km long and up to 150 km wide) is thought by some authors (Glennie et al., 1990) to have been generated along a subduction related back-arc spreading axis during the Cenomanian-Turonian and was obducted onto the Arabian continental margin during the Campanian. Others, however, consider it to represent a primitive arc-spreading center related to oblique subduction Lippard et al., 1986). The Ophiolitic rocks in the study area comprise mantle and crustal sequences. The mantle peridotite and crustal gabbros are the dominant rock types of the exposed Semail Ophiolite north of the Hatta zone. This paper is only concentrated on the gabbroic rocks."

This paper presents an economic evaluation of resin ion exchange and solvent extraction for the purification and concentration of uraniferous solutions derived from sulphuric acid leaching operations. Capital and operating costs are related to the uranium tenors of pregnant solutions. The conclusions drawn herein apply only to cases where resin and liquid ion exchange are technically feasible process alternatives. It is shown that solvent extraction is economically favoured for pregnant solutions at tenors greater than 0.90 gpl U3O8. Pregnant solutions with tenors below 0.35 gpl U3O8 are best treated by resin ion exchange. Between these concentrations, the economics are marginal and the favoured process is indistinguishable within the limits of accuracy of this study.

"Hydrometallurgical processing involves process stages, like leaching, that create harsh environment for stainless steels. High acidity, the presence of chlorides and oxidizing ions combined with relatively high temperature create risk for both uniform and localized corrosion. Advanced electrochemical techniques were employed to study uniform and pitting corrosion of two stainless steel grades 316L and 2205. Results obtained with the linear polarization resistance technique combined with the harmonics distortion analysis, electrochemical noise and coupled multielectrode array systems are compared to the results of conventional electrochemical techniques and immersion tests.INTRODUCTIONHydrometallurgical processing has become favoured in metals production in recent years due to energy costs, leaner ore bodies and environmental factors. Because the hydrometallurgical processing route is flexible, various types of secondary raw materials, like flotation tailings, dusts, sludges and slimes can also be treated in addition to conventional mineral concentrates (Sarveswara Rao & Acharya, 2008).Hydrometallurgical processing relies on aqueous chemistry, usually acids, at temperatures around 100°C for the recovery of metals from ores, concentrates, recycled or residual materials. The processing route can typically be divided into three stages: leaching, solution concentration/purification and metal recovery. The processing environment is aggressive, especially in leaching. High acidity, relatively high temperature together with impurities, like chloride ions, place high demands on the corrosion resistance of construction materials. The dominant corrosion mechanism may be uniform corrosion or localized corrosion depending on the process conditions (Ekman & Torsner, 2010). This complicates the prediction of corrosion rates and, consequently, cost effective material selection.Traditional means to evaluate uniform corrosion resistance of stainless steels are immersion tests and the results are published in the form of iso-corrosion diagrams (Outokumpu Stainless, 2010). For the localized corrosion, namely pitting and crevice corrosion, immersion tests can be used but the duration of the test is rather long because an incubation period takes place prior to the occurrence of the actual localized corrosion damage. Electrochemical techniques, traditionally in the form of cyclic polarization scans, have been employed to assess the susceptibility of a material to pitting corrosion (Papavinasam, 2008). They cannot, however, give any indication of the pitting corrosion rate and lack potential for on-line measurements."

"To overcome the problem that scoroditeis not stable in neutral and alkaline solutions, we proposed and investigated a synthesis method of scorodite coated in-situ with hydrated ferric oxide in the Fe(II)-As(V)-H2O system at the initial Fe(III)/As(V) molar ratios larger than 1.0.The synthesis was carried out at 90?,pH 1.5 under atmospheric pressure. During the synthesis, oxygen gas was conducted and bubbled into the system to oxidize Fe(II) ions into Fe(III)ions, and Na2CO3aqueous solution as neutralizing agent was added controllably into the system for keeping the pH constant at 1.5. In this study, three samples of scorodite were synthesized at the controlled initial Fe(II)/As(V) molar ratios of 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0, respectively. The characterizations of the samples by HRTEM, TEM/EDX, and chemical composition indicated that the particle surfaces of scorodite synthesized at the initial Fe(II)/As(V) molar ratio of 2.0 and 3.0 were coated in situ by a film of hydrated ferric oxide with the thickness of several nanometers, while the sample synthesized at the initial Fe(II)/As(V) molar ratio of 1.0 was uncoated scorodite. The TCLP and long-term leaching for the toxicity characteristic of the samples showed that scorodite coated in situ with hydrated ferric oxide was stable in a wide pH range from 3.0 to 10.0, with the arsenic concentrations in the leaching solutions less than 1.0mg/L. Nevertheless, uncoated scorodite was unstable under the conditions from weak acidity to alkalinity, with the arsenic concentrations in the leaching solutions larger than 5.0 mg/L.INTRODUCTIONArsenic pollution is a challenge for environment and health and has been an important issue for scientists (Hopkin, 1989).Arsenicis commonly associated with ores or concentrates of nonferrous metals, mainly as independent arsenic bearing minerals such as arsenopyrite (FeAsS), tennantite(Cu12As4S13), enargite (Cu3AsS4), cobaltite (CoAsS), and gersdorffite (NiAsS), realgar (As2S2), orpiment(As2S3), etc.(Matschullat, 2000; Mandal & Suzuki, 2002; Long & Peng, 2012). In the nonferrous metallurgical processes, arsenic is enriched mainly in such arsenic bearing materials as various flue dusts, residues, and anode slimes, which results in the accumulation of arsenic in the system owing to the circulation of those arsenic-bearing materials back to the system and the pollution to the environment (Harris, et al, 2003).In addition, the utilization of arsenic is limited and has been decreasing owing to its toxicity and carcinogenicity. Therefore, arsenic has to be removed from those arsenic-bearing materials and discarded safely (Dutrizac & Jambor, 1988; Monhemius & Swash, 1999; Drahota & Fillippi, 2009).In this case, how to immobilize arsenic has become a difficult problem which must be solved. Among the methods of immobilizing arsenic which have been proposed and investigated, immobilizing arsenic into a stable mineral to fix it, has been realized as a promising method and becomes a research focus(Dutrizac et al, 1987; Dutrizac & Jambor, 1988; Demopoulos et al, 1995; Fujita et al, 2008a; 2008b).Scorodite has been known as one of the best minerals for immobilizing arsenic, owing to its high stability under weak acidic condition, the arsenic content as high as 32wt%,and good crystallinity benefiting the separation of solid to liquid(Daivid et al, 1999; Zhu & Merkel, 2001). Scorodite can be synthesized from arsenic containing solutions under both hydrothermal and atmospheric conditions, and a lot of work has been done on the synthesis of scorodite and its leaching stability characterization (Filippou & Demopoulos, 1999; Gomez et al, 2011).Two plants for the immobilization of arsenic as scorodite have been putin to operation in Chile and Japan, respectively (Filippou & Demopoulos, 1999; Amir et al, 2016)."

Tower crane layout (TCL) is a typical construction site layout (CSL) problem, which is suitable for a wide range of work assignments and site conditions. Tower crane is one of the key facilities for vertical and horizontal transportation of materials, especially for heavy prefabrication units such as steel beams, ready mixed concrete, prefabricated elements and large panel formwork such as machinery and equipment, and a wide variety of other building materials within a construction site. However, it is a difficult combinatorial optimization problem to determine the locations of tower cranes with materials quantity supply and demand for engineers. Swarm intelligence (SI) was very popular and widely used in many complex optimization problems which was collective behaviour of social systems such as honey bees (bee algorithm, BA) and birds (particle swarm optimization, PSO). This study applied a hybrid swarm algorithm namely particle bee algorithm (PBA) based on a particular intelligent behaviour of honey bee and bird swarms by integrates theirs advantages. This study compares the performance of PBA with BA and PSO for a proposed hypothetical construction engineering of TCL with materials quantity supply and demand problem. Results show that PBA performs better performance than the mentioned algorithms on a proposed hypothetical TCL problem.

F OR many years, only one grade of structural steel has been used in volume in Canada. Its characteristics have not been altered appreciably and its long use speaks well for its performance. This standard grade of structural steel may be bought and specified as C.S.A. G40.4 steel or the American equivalent, A.S.T.M. A7. The principal limitations and requirements of this specification are shown in Table I. Within the last five years there has been a growing awareness among the steel producers and steel fabricators that economic forces are at work which make desirable the availability of new and better grades of structural steel. Competition from other materials has increased. The use of concrete bridges and pre-stressed concrete beams is a prime example. The Darrehzar porphyry Cu deposit is situated in the Urumieh-Dokhtar magmatic suite of Central Iran. The REE and trace element data suggest that the deposit lies within a continental margin setting. Phyllic and propylitic alteration are pervasive in the area but potassic and argillicalteration are not readily recognized on the surface. This is possibly the result of super gene weathering of the surface rocks or because of an intense phyllic overprint. Poor soil development and abundant outcrop make the area suitable for a case study of lithogeochemical exploration technique for Cu deposits. A total of 262 rock samples was collected over the area and analyzed for 15 elements. The geochemical data cor-relate with the mineralogical composition of the rocks with the phyllic zone being marked by high-er concentrations of Si, Al, K, and by a high sericitization index while Ca, Mg, Sr, total Fe and Mn are more abundant in the propylitic zone. The lithogeochemical study indicates a metal zonation from a Cu + Mo-rich core to a Zn + Pb ± Ag-rich outer zone. Principal component analysis is useful for separating element associations, which in turn reflect the alteration halos. Principal components 1 and 2 depict alteration zoning, where-as 3 shows an association of Cu and Mo, that roughly defines the mineralized area.

"The efficiency of the flotation process depends on how effectively air is dispersed into small bubbles. Bubble surface area flux - the surface area of bubbles per unit time per unit cross-section area of a cell - is emerging as the parameter to characterize gas dispersion. One of the approaches proposed to measure bubble surface area flux in industrial cells is based on the measurement of two variables: gas velocity and gas holdup, using separate sensors. Plant testing of the gas velocity sensor gave evidence of a series of operational problems which may be necessary to correct before attempting to characterize gas dispersion. Problems such as uneven air distribution within a cell and along a bank, faulty air and slurry valves detected during attempts to redistribute air, and poor control of pulp level and gas flow became evident. Detection of these problems from gas velocity measurements is illustrated.INTRODUCTIONBubble surface area flux is considered a key variable in the optimization of flotation circuit performance (Gorain et al., 1997; 1998). The Mineral Processing Group at McGill University has devised and developed a method for estimating bubble surface area flux in industrial flotation cells (Finch et al., 1999). The method is based on measuring gas holdup and superficial gas velocity using two separate sensors and applying drift flux analysis to estimate bubble size (Dobby et al., 1988; Banisi and Finch, 1994). With bubble size and superficial gas velocity known bubble surface area flux can be calculated.This method was selected by Noranda to characterize gas dispersion in cells as part of a program to model and optimize flotation circuit performance. However, initial testing at Brunswick Mine with the gas velocity sensor provided some unexpected results indicating operational problems and equipment malfunctions that needed to be addressed before systematic measurement of gas dispersion could be initiated.The subject of this communication is to illustrate the detection of these problems from gas velocity measurements. The line 3 Zn Cleaner circuit comprising four stages of Denver DR cells was the main subject of analysis, including the effect of correcting these problems on the metallurgical performance of the Zn 3rd cleaner bank of ten DRl 00 cells."

This work reports on applying iron oxide coated sands media in an experimental permeable reactive barrier to remove uranium species from uranium containing water. A field experiment was conducted at the legacy Gunnar uranium mine & mill site that was abandoned in the 1960s with limited to no decommissioning. The flooded Gunnar mine pit presently contains about 3.2 million m3 of water contaminated by dissolved U (1.2 mg/l), Ra-226 (0.4 Bq/l), and minor concentrations of other contaminants (As, Se, etc.). The water is seeping over the pit rim into Lake Athabasca posing environmental and health concerns. Iron oxide coated sands can be used to immobilize uranium species through an adsorption process. Methods for preparation of hydrous ferric oxide sorbents and their supported forms onto silica sands are described. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and powder X-ray diffraction (pXRD) were used to characterize the physical-chemical properties of the sorbent. The monolayer uranium uptake capacity (Qm) was estimated through the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Adsorption kinetic experiments were performed in a lab environment before moving to a field trial. Based on these lab results and the input on field-scale appropriate geometries, a pilot permeable reactive barrier was fabricated and a field test conducted near the Gunnar pit in June 2019. This pilot test provided technical data and information needed for designing a full-scale permeable barrier based on the iron oxide coated sands, which may be applied for in-situ water treatment at Gunnar and other legacy uranium sites.

McArthur River Operation is the world?s largest high grade uranium deposit and is located in Northern Saskatchewan. McArthur River came into production in December 1999 with a number of innovative technologies to allow for mining of a high grade uranium deposit in challenging geotechnical and hydrological conditions. The raisebore mining method has been supplemented by the continued development of a boxhole mining technique to allow for mining of mineralization that cannot be accessed with a drill chamber from above. An innovative freeze wall re-design ? a cathedral freeze wall, was implemented in 2009 to allow for top access of a new orebody in the unconformity area of the Athabasca Sandstone. This paper highlights some of the ongoing improvements to the mining method and the innovative risk mitigation applied to manage the extraction of this challenging orebody.
