"The grinding circuit of the Heath Steele concentrator was sampled under five different sets of operating conditions. The balanced results of the sampling campaigns were used to calibrate steady-state rod mill, ball mill and cyclone models using a commercial simulation software package (JKSimMet® ). Thirteen process variables had the potential to affect significantly the performance of the grinding circuit. Statistical-Design-of- Experiments techniques were applied to plan the suite of simulations in order to improve the quality of and minimize the time to find the optimal solution. The effect of each factor on three performance indices (the cyclone overflow size distribution, the circulating load and the cyclone underflow density) was modeled with empirical polynomial relationships using another software package (Design-Expert@)T. he conditions under which the cyclone overflow size distribution was maximized while respecting circulating load and cyclone density constraints were identified using these relationships. Among the most interesting results is the prediction of a set of conditions where the circuit target size distribution is achieved with only three ball mills instead of four.IntroductionProduction at the Heath Steele concentrator (near Miramichi, New Brunswick) started some 43 years ago at a rate of 750 t/d. The plant capacity was increased to 4000 t/d through successive expansion phases in the seventies (Sapiro, 1977; Johnston, 1978). However, as a result of depleting ore reserves, the plant throughput had to be gradually reduced to the current production rate of 2700 t/d. Heath Steele Mines currently have proven and probable reserves which would see it producing until the end of 1999 (Noranda Inc., 1997).An analysis of the grinding circuit of the Heath Steele concentrator was recently commissioned to identify opportunities for reducing operating costs while maintaining budgeted mill throughput and metallurgical performance. Since the plant will likely be operated below nominal capacity for the rest of its lifetime, the possibility of improving grinding efficiency by operating with fewer ball mills and/or crushers was contemplated."

"Various full-scale test programs and installations of the InLine Pressure Jig (IPJ) have provided evidence that pre-concentration of the difficult to leach sulphide mineral through gravity can provide significant increases in economic recoveries. The continuous gravity concentrates are intensively treated either by re-grinding or Intensive Cyanidation. Data from various mine sites worldwide is presented. Treatment of complex ore bodies with this low cost methodology may render previously uneconomic ore bodies financially viable and assist in the recovery profile of transitional ore.INTRODUCTIONThe use of gravity is made extremely attractive in complex ore situations due to the low cost of operation, typically a few cents per ton operating cost and lack of chemicals.Gold mines which suffer from poor recovery due to complex mineralogy such as Stibnite, Arsenic, Carbon, Telluride, Silver and other pacifying agents such as Iron, which can form coatings, can all benefit from the process proposed in this paper. The key issue is not overall recovery as much as one of economic recovery. The key to this is maximised recovery at the lowest possible capital and operating cost. Other options such as flotation are reviewed but are not seen in many instances to be the panacea due to issues discussed in the paper. The use of the InLine Pressure Jig in the re-circulating load of the milling circuit is a cost effective means of recovering a sulphide/gold concentrate containing the complex mineral assemblages which require re-grinding and intensive leaching for optimised gold recovery.The benefits of Jig Assisted Grinding (JAG) are many and the challenge over the past years has been developing, understanding, implementing and evaluating the benefits of various flowsheet models. This has involved the reconciliation of results in plant scale trials back to the original laboratory test program. The following paper outlines the insights gained in this area through extensive work carried out by many people across both laboratories and plant sites in Australia and overseas. The examples in this paper are some of the work carried out on a few selected sites but similar work has been carried out on other sites such as Penjom, Granny Smith and Agnew. This work has eventuated in several installations which we believe have great importance in the future of the gold processing industry. They will lead the way forward to the modern all-gravity plants of the future.Compared to flotation, for the recovery of sulphides, gravity is a simple option. The simplicity generally translates to low capital and operating cost."

Cryolitic melts at a temperature of about 960 °C are used in reduction cells to dissolve alumina and to produce primary aluminium. At these temperatures cryolitic melts with an acidic composition have a significant vapour pressure, which contributes substantially to the evolution of fluorides from these cells, The Antoine equation is commonly used for relating vapour pressure data of liquids at different temperatures, It is also applicable to cryolitic melts, Published equations have at least 20 numerical constants, in order to allow for the effects of melt composition. In the present work a simplified equation with only 12 numerical constants was developed and is applicable for multiple additions to molten cryolite up to 30 wt %, The simplified equation was compared with the published equations of Haupin & Kvande and Gustaysen & Ostvold using 472 vapour pressure data of cryolitic melts. Results showed that the simplified equation has the same accuracy as the published equations in the composition range of interest to industry.

THE DEVELOPMENT by the Iron Ore Company of Canada of the Quebec-Labrador mining project, which eventually led to 'Iron Ore in 1954', involved, from the start, several distinct undertakings. Among them, the most important were: The construction of a 360-mile railway, linking Knob Lake with Seven Islands. The erection of a railway terminal, and harbour facilities, at Seven Islands itself. The building of an entire townsite at Schefferville (formerly Knob Lake) The construction of two hydroelectric plants; and, finally, The development of a sufficient number of orebodies to enable a production of 10 to 15 million tons of ore a year. Since these phases of the project have already been the subject of previous discussions, this paper will not elaborate further on them but will rather concern itself with a brief outline of the Company's current mining practices.

Au printemps 2011, la Corporation minière Osisko met en production le gisement Canadian Malartic, qui devient la plus importante mine d?or à ciel ouvert au Canada. Pour lui faire place, elle a déménagé un quartier de 205 maisons et construit 6 nouveaux bâtiments institutionnels. Les démarches ont commencé en 2006. La compagnie a d?abord établi l?emplacement du nouveau quartier résidentiel, en collaboration avec la Ville de Malartic, puis fait la conception de ce quartier de manière à refléter au mieux les caractéristiques du quartier à déménager. Elle a ensuite effectué une opération d?assignation consistant à proposer à chaque propriétaire intéressé un lot dans le nouveau quartier. Au total, 140 résidences ont été déménagées en 2008 et 2009 et 65 été rachetées par la compagnie, le tout par des ententes de gré à gré sauf pour un seul cas. La réussite d?une opération d?une telle importance sociale n?a été possible que parce que la compagnie s?est assurée d?un soutien massif de la population et des autorités pendant tout le processus. Cette expérience peut être fort utile pour les nombreux projets miniers dont l?insertion dans la communauté est un enjeu important.

"INTRODUCTION Extensive studies have been carried on pure gold to determine the various factors that affect its dissolution in alkaline cyanide solutions. With the extension of milling to refractory ores more intensive investigations on the effect of impurities in the ore on the dissolution kinetics are needed. The present work describes experiments carried on refractory flotation tailings with the object to determine how the recovery of gold could be increased. The effect of arsenic and antimony in the ore and the excessive use of lime are discussed. Control of cyanide losses is also dealt with.MECHANISM OF THE GOLD DISSOLUTION REACTION In aqueous cyanide solutions, gold is believed to be dissolved by one of the following reactions:4Au + 8NaCN + O2 + 2H20 = 4NaAu (CN)2 + 4NaOH (1)2Au + 4NaCN + 2 + 2H20 = 2NaAu (CN)2 + 2NaOH + H202 (2)2Au + 4NaCN + H202 = 2NaAu (CN)2 + 2NaOH (3) The first of these, known as the Elsner Equation is supported by )4 3,2,1(several authors while others(5,6) support reactions 2 and 3 known as the Bodlander Equations. According to Habashi(7), the overall reaction for the dissolution process is as shown in equation 2. Most of the workers agree that hydrogen peroxide is produced in the course of the reaction."

Dump trucks are the main mean for hauling earth material within and outside of the construction and open-pit mining jobsites. The real-time monitoring of the material transportation trips is beneficial for proactive equipment management, volume estimation, and productivity measurement. The traditional manual observation is tedious, non-real-time, and expensive; therefore remote sensing technologies, namely GPS and RFID, have been employed for this reason. Ordinary construction videos are another costeffective alternative to monitor dirt loading and hauling operations in real-time. A vision-based system has been developed to recognize and count hauling trips. This system has three modules including object detection, tracking, and action recognition. This system processes videos taken from access roads in which it recognizes dump trucks and then tracks them throughout the viewfinder. The action recognition module is designed to reject false alarms and also terminate tracking. This way, the system is able to count the number of hauling trips and also record the time between each trip. Several state of the art computer vision algorithms were employed to develop this system. Some of these algorithms were modified using spatiotemporal information to minimize the inherent errors of the vision-based methods. The experimental results showed considerable performance of the system for practical application in the construction and mining sectors.

"Friction stir welding (FSW) process in lap configuration for dissimilar materials has been developed and tested for steel to aluminum joining. A novel cylindrical tool was designed for improved material flow. The joining of steel to high strength 5xxx and 6xxx aluminum was carried out by FSW technique using optimized process parameters. The microstructure, micro-hardness, joint strength and corrosion properties at the weld interface have been investigated. Optical and scanning electron microscopy reveled a well layered structure at the interface and lap shear tests of the welds showed excellent fracture resistance. Neutral salt spray tests for up to 500 hours (ASTM B117) were carried out on the bare steel to aluminum FSW joints, which did not show neither evidence of corrosion at the weld interface, nor any degradation of the weld strength. The FSW lap configuration was applied to prototype commercial vehicle structural component whereby a steel stiffener insert was friction stir welded to high strength 6xxx aluminum alloy. The interface microstructure showed layered root without any steel shattering in aluminum side. A finite element study was carried out to quantify the benefits where it was found that the stiffness increases by 76% under bending loads and 36% in torsion loads.INTRODUCTION Energy preservation and environmental issues, namely carbon footprint and legislation around emission in transportation industries has led to a growing need to use of lightweight materials such as aluminum and magnesium alloys along with various grades of steel in structural application, while still maintaining their strength and crashworthiness. Assembling dissimilar materials within integrated structure is thus a stringent requirement related to optimum performance. In order to achieve an efficient technology of joining dissimilar materials such as aluminum to steel, it remains difficult to select an effective welding process for a given joint configuration. The use of aluminum in transportation industries for structural component is not exclusive in a design and is almost always used along with various steel grades for a mixed materials solution, thus dissimilar aluminum/steel lap joining is of great interest since this is widely used in the assembly of parts (e.g. pillar, frame rails, chassis, body in white (BIW), CAB, etc.)."

DURING the field season of 1938, the Ontario Department of Mines assigned a combined geological and geophysical survey patty to the investigation of the location, genesis, structural relationships, and economic possibilities of the hematite deposits at Steeprock lake. The investigation was carried out by detailed mapping of the rock exposures and a magneto-metric survey of the drift-covered portions of the area. This was supplemented during the winter of 1938-39 by further geophysical work conducted on the ice. Dr. A. A. Brant, of the Department of Physics, University of Toronto, was in charge of the geophysical work for the Department of Mines in the summer and for the Sterola Exploration Company in the winter. The writer supervised the geological examination. Scope of the Paper The present paper is an attempt to acquaint the members of the Institute with the structure and mode of occurrence of the deposits, since many people are of the erroneous opinion that they are analogous to the Mesaba and Michigan deposits. It is hoped that, from this discussion, they may be able to draw some conclusions of their own regarding the nature of the deposits, and the importance and future possibilities of the region.

"Copper Mountain’s concentrator was commissioned in May 2011. The circuit consists of a 34’ x 20’ EGL SAG mill, a Raptor 900 pebble crusher and two 24’ x 39’6” ball mills. Each mill is equipped with a 2 x 8500 HP dual pinion drive system. The plant was designed to process 1585 mtph of SAG feed. From startup, the mill struggled to meet the required production rates. Over time, a major initiative that involved blasting and fragmentation, optimization of the SAG mill in terms of discharge grates, ball size and slurry density, and operation of up to three mobile pre-crushing plants resulted in significant increases in throughput. In parallel, a number of modeling tools, including JK SimMet, were run based on plant benchmarking exercises. Samples collected at the mine site during ramp up confirmed the very competent nature of the ore with drop weight - A*b values of less than 24 being recorded on a variety of plant feeds and lithologies. After due consideration including demonstration of proof of concept, a new pre-crushing circuit incorporating an XL2000 cone crusher and associated screening equipment was designed, constructed and commissioned at the site in August 2014. This paper reviews the history of the original circuit design, the various optimization steps taken and impacts, together with the final pre-crushing circuit and net results.IntroductionThe Copper Mountain Mine is located approximately 20 km south of Princeton, British Columbia, Canada (refer to Figure 1). The region has a long history of copper mining dating back to 1923. The Copper Mountain camp occurs in the 'eastern volcanic belt' of the Nicola Group (Monger, 1989). It is an alkali copper-gold deposit in which the volcanic strata are intruded by early Jurassic dykes, sills, irregular plugs and zoned plutons (Woodsworth et al., 1992). The stratified rocks are relatively fresh with slight metamorphism in the local contact regions."

"Since 1999, COREM (formerly the Centre de Recherche Minérale) has conducted and coordinated research and development activities for a consortium of mining companies that uses the benefits and advantages of collaborative pre-competitive research. In particular, COREM’s “In Situ Optimization Group” is involved in the development and implementation of modem information technologies related to process optimization and control.The POP Project was launched in order to increase and consolidate the use of such technologies applied to mineralurgical and metallurgical processes. To ensure a successful transfer to the industry, there are a number of essential activities that have to be undertaken. These activities have been identified by COREM’s members and are grouped into three main modules:- R&D Module: research and development in universities and research centres;-Technology Transfer Module: integration of new tools into the POP Software, industrial applications and technical support;- Training Module: education of new engineers in universities and continuing education of plant personnel through on-site workshops.This paper outlines the opportunities that led to the definition of the POP Project, presents its main objectives and describes its main modules. The main features of the POP Software are outlined, the first applications at COREM’s member plants are presented and, finally, future developments are discussed."

"Abstract — The Detour Lake gold deposit is located within the northwestern limit of the Archean Abitibi Subprovince of the Superior Province. Mineralized zones are hosted by a sequence of pillowed and massive flows, hyaloclastite units, and altered ultramafic rocks, and are commonly oriented parallel to a series of high-strain zones that are co-planar to the regional-scale Sunday Lake Deformation Zone. Early in its kinematic history, the Sunday Lake Deformation Zone placed older (2.72 Ga) volcanic rocks of the Detour Lake Formation over younger (2.70 Ga) sedimentary rocks of the Caopatina assemblage. Gold mineralization is also parallel to the position of a laterally persistent siliceous rock unit, the 2.725 Ga ‘Chert Marker Horizon.’ The Chert Marker Horizon coincides with the boundary between the mafic-dominated upper Detour Lake Formation and the ultramafic-dominated lower Detour Lake Formation. Stratigraphic and geochronological data suggest that the Chert Marker Horizon is a deformed felsic volcaniclastic unit. At a cut-off of 0.6 g/t Au, the Detour Lake deposit contains 17.26 million ounces of Au within 445.9 million tonnes of rock grading 1.20 g/t Au. Gold occurs in shear-hosted and extensional vein arrays within rocks of the upper and lower Detour Lake Formation and within the Chert Marker Horizon. The Detour Lake deposit has many of the characteristics of a greenstone-hosted, quartz-carbonate vein deposit; its very large size may be attributed to large-scale rheological controls resulting in the formation of dilatant sites in permissive rock units. © 2012 Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum. "The property of McWatters Gold Mines, Limited, is in the east-central part of Rouyn township and about 6 miles east-southeast of the town of Rouyn. It includes 35 claims, the group of 5, staked originally, and 30 claims acquired in later years. The Rouyn-Val d'Or road and the Noranda Senneterre branch of the Canadian National railway both pass within a few hundred feet of the mine.The group of claims in which the mine occurs was first staked in 1922, but gold was not discovered until August 1932 when a schistose zone including veins of quartz carrying considerable free gold was laid bare in a stripped area in the northeastern part of claim R.11604. Diamond drilling undertaken in 1932, and continued into 1933, shouwd that the gold extended for at least 1,000 feet along the strike. A 3-compartment shaft was sunk to 418 feet in 1933. A mill having a capacity of 50 tons a day was constructed in 1934, and enlarged to 150 tons in 1935. Production began in 1934 and continued without interruption to June 1944. Except for a few diamond drill holes, there have been no operations on the property since that time. The maximum depth of the mine workings is 1,50) feet. A total of 368,013 tons of ore having a value of $3,946,752 and an average grade of $11.04 was mined during the years of operation.GEOLOGYThe ore mined from the property occurred within the south limb of an eastward plunging syncline of volcanics and sediments cut off on the north by the Cadillac-Bouzan Lake fault. Because the rock formations within the syncline have been severed from those outside with which they were originally continuous, their correlation is based almost wholly on lithological similarity. They include an irregular middle zone of conglomerate and greywacke underlain by north and south bands of andesite agglomerate and andesite tuff, in which lenticular bands of pillowed andesite are included."

IN THE preliminary design of a coal washery, the most important factor to evaluate is the ash content of the final product. The ash content permissible may be imposed by market demands, but, in the final analysis, sooner or later - as most consumers today are buying coal on a 'heat value' basis - the coal operator has a certain margin of latitude. and the ash content of the coal to be delivered can be determined on the basis of maximum returns and highest profits. A few years ago, the most desirable separation was selected on the basis of the plus-minus 0.10; that is, the most desirable gravity of the separation was selected at the point showing a minimum amount of near gravities in the raw coal. The reason for this was an expected wide error over these near gravities. Today with the recent development of cry accurate, automatically controlled cleaning apparatus, a much larger latitude is possible, and the most desirable gravity of separation can be selected, almost exclusively, on the basis of the economic factors involved. To illustrate these new methods of investigation we shall give two examples, based on actual coals from the western United States.

"This paper summarizes research that was done at the Mines Branch, Ottawa, to evaluate samples of phosphogypsum for gypsum products manufacture. The samples were from phosphate fertilizer facilities at: Port Maitland, Ontario ; Valleyfield, Quebec; and Fort Saskatchewan and Redwater, Alberta. All samples were wet-screened, washed, filtered and calcined in a laboratory kettle at atmospheric pressure. Tests were also made at higher pressures in a small autoclave. The gypsum and resulting hemi-hydrate, being acidic, were treated before, during and after calcining with various bases. The hemi-hydrate products were checked for time of set, compressive strength and bond to gypsum wallboard paper. The results of this study indicate that phosphogypsum from each of the sources investigated has potential as a substitute for mined gypsum in gypsum products manufacture. Pilot-scale testing is recommended to confirm that the product would be satisfactory for the manufacture of plaster products on a commercial basis."

The reduction of aqueous slurries of uranyl carbonate at elevated temperature with compressed hydrogen m the presence of metal catalysts and certain organic promoters has been shown. to yield uranium dioxide. The reduction takes place in a sequence of steps. The purity and sintering properties of the dioxide make it of interest as a starting material for fuel element production. Simple control can be exercised over the surface area and oxygen/uranium ratio of the product during reduction. URANIUM dioxide for fueling atomic power reactors 1s conventionally produced as a powder by simultaneously decomposing and reducing ammonium diuranate with hydrogen in a furnace at high temperature. "This paper describes some of the methods and equipment used for fine milling of minerals, and gives particular attention to the Vibro Energy system.In addition, the paper describes a specific application in the gold mining industry. This is the 200 tpd plant built by Anglo American Corporation at the President Brand Mine in South Africa in 1985, now a division of Freegold. This plant treats a gold bearing pyrite flotation concentrate which is finely ground to 15 microns prior to cyanidation and carbon-in-pulp (CIP). l .0 INTRODUCTIONFree milling gold ores are those that yield acceptable dissolution and recovery of the gold following grinding to what can be described as normal fineness, frequently between 50% and 90% passing 74 microns.Increasingly, gold metallurgists are faced with ores that are refractory. The traditiona1 treatment route for refractory gal d ores and concentrates has been by roasting, but for environmental reasons this is becoming less acceptable, or in some areas of the world, totally unacceptable. New methods of treating refractory gold ores are being developed and applied in practice. These new methods include pressure and biological oxidation. Higher gold liberation can also be attained by increasing the fineness of grind, although with conventional systems there are economic limits to this.In flowsheet development and test programs on new deposits, a standard procedure is to establish the relationship between the grind and subsequent go 1 d extraction. The normal situation is that gold extraction increases as the ore, or concentrate, is ground finer. Typically, this relationship is as shown in Fig. l, where the incremental additional extraction is very small once an optimum, or economic, grind has been achieved. This generally app1ies whether the material is free milling or refractory. The limits to grinding are set by the type of equipment which is commonly in use, usually ball mills. These mills have the obvious advantage of high capacity, however, they are increasingly inefficient as finer grinds are required. In general, ball mills are used to reduce ore to some agreed percentage passing 74, or possibly 53 microns."

Geological uncertainty is an unavoidable characteristic of all mining projects since only limited information is available from sampling. Mine planning and development decisions with significant economic consequences are made when the geological heterogeneity is inherently uncertain. Geostatistical simulation is preferred over kriging because the methodology provides alternative property realizations that can be combined into a model of geological uncertainty. Geological uncertainty can be transferred into production uncertainty, which can help characterize the economic risk of the project. This paper presents a case study for the Pogo property, being prepared for development near Fairbanks, Alaska. The exact dimensions, grades and production predictions have been modified; however, the methodology is illustrative. The geostatistical methodology consists of (1) assembling the relevant drillhole data and establishing a suitable coordinate system, (2) calculating the target distribution, (3) creating a model of spatial correlation, (4) generating multiple realizations at a small scale and (5) linearly averaging all the realizations to the chosen selective mining unit (SMU) support size. The geostatistical model is then used to calculate production uncertainty.

"To reach the Hemlo Gold Inc. objective of becoming the lowest cost, safest Canadian gold producer while causing no environmental damage, management embarked from its inception on a strategy to build an organization which would foster employee involvement wherever possible. This paper describes the organizational structure and how various innovative concepts have been implemented.BACKGROUNDThe Golden Giant Mine in the Hemlo area of North Western Ontario is owned by Hemlo Gold Mines Inc. 50.1% is controlled by Noranda. The mine commenced operations in March 1985 at a modest production rate. After it reaches full production by the end of 1988, with completion of underground development work, the mine is expected to operate at 3000 t/d and produce in excess of 300,000 ounces of gold per annum. This makes it one of the three largest producing gold mines in North America.Two other companies, Lac Minerals and Teck-Corona, operate mines on either side of the Golden Giant Mine. Noranda Geco Division is located 55 kilometers to the north at Manitouwadge. The majority of Hemlo Gold's 270 employees live in Manitouwadge where a mix of accommodation was constructed and made available for purchase by employees. Bus transportation is provided to and from the workplace with modern coaches. The housing and transportation policies were implemented prior to start-up and designed to help attract and maintain good employees.As shown in Figure 1, the operation is divided into five operating and support departments with each reflecting a high degree of departmental control and responsibility. For example, the mill department is responsible for all aspects directly relating to the milling complex including safety, operation, mechanical maintenance, assaying, instrumentation, and environmental control. Similarly, the mine department is responsible for all phases of operation, mine engineering, geology, and maintenance of underground mobile equipment. The plant department is responsible for maintenance of hoisting plants and conveyances, underground stationary equipment, all site electrical services, surface buildings, housing and yard maintenance. Efforts are made at every level of the organization, from departmental organization to individual job assignments, to ensure responsibilities are clear and that they encompass complete functions."
