This paper outlines a number of immediate practical approaches to continuous improvement in environmental management in the minerals industry. It puts these into context with longer time-frame step-change approaches whose gestation may take a decade. Examples of improvements and approaches are drawn from WMC operations.

The hydrometallurgical separation and enrichment processes provide an effective way to selectively recover metals from relatively dilute multicomponent sulfuric acid leach solutions. The multicomponent leach solution utilised in this study contained 0.3 g/L Cu, 0.34 g/L Ni, 0.13 g/L Co, and 2.96 g/L Fe, which was obtained after high-pressure oxidative acid leaching (HPOAL) of the copper-nickel smelter slag. The solvent extraction (SX), precipitation, and xanthate complexation processes were employed to recover and upgrade Cu, Ni, and Co from the leach solution. Batch SX tests were carried out using a countercurrent two-stage mixer settler extraction column, and LIX 984N (10 per cent v/v) as a copper extractant. Fundamental parameters influencing the extraction process such as pH, mixing speed, H2SO4 concentration, and organic/aqueous (O/A) phase ratio were investigated. For copper enrichment in solution, a combination of two extraction stages and two stripping stages were employed. Copper was successively separated from Fe, Ni, and Co under optimised extraction conditions (pH 2, 400 rev/min, O/A 0.25, and 20 min contacting) and stripping conditions (175 g/L H2SO4, 400 rev/min, O/A 4, and 20 min contacting). About 97 per cent of copper was extracted with low co-extraction of Fe, Ni, and Co of about 5.90 per cent, 1.47 per cent, and 2.53 per cent, correspondingly. A final Cu-rich solution containing 23 g/L Cu was obtained with a very low Fe concentration of 0.05 g/L. Additionally, for iron removal from the Ni/Co raffinate solution, more than 99 per cent of iron was precipitated at pH 4 by the addition of a calcium carbonate (CaCO3) suspension, with low co-precipitation of nickel and cobalt of around 3.68 per cent and 2.27 per cent, respectively. Furthermore, about 83.6 per cent of nickel and 99.4 per cent cobalt were co-precipitated from the solution by potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) solution at pH 6. The Ni and Co xanthate complexes were thermally decomposed and recovered as cobalt oxide (CoO) and nickel sulfide (NiS) solids.

The Northparkes, Endeavour 26 orebody is a porphyry copperûgold deposit and comprises a moderately to well jointed rock mass characterised by gypsum veining, the intensity of which decreases with depth. The top 480 metres of the orebody is currently being mined by block caving, the undercut dimensions measuring 196 metres in length by 180 metres in width. Continuous caving was never achieved after the completion of the undercut thus cave inducement techniques were sought to maintain caving so as to safely sustain production. The use of hydraulic fracturing as a cave inducement tool was successfully trialled in December 1997 using existing exploration boreholes located midway up the current lift. Subsequent fracturing campaigns have enjoyed various degrees of success and have yielded in excess of seven million tonnes of ore at a significantly lower cost than conventional cave inducement techniques. Monitoring of both the hydraulic fracture system and the rock mass response has provided considerable insight into the geometry, growth and influence of hydraulic fracture networks above the Northparkes block cave, and has initiated additional research into the use of hydraulic fracturing in other mining methods.

The development of Western Australian magnetite deposits has lead to the design of some of the largest grinding mills and plants in the world. One of the projects demonstrates the efficiency gains possible by developing a simple yet thorough test program for circuit design. By drawing on the experience of current magnetite operations in Australia and the Mesabi and Marquette iron ranges in the United States, a basic flowsheet was developed. Through comprehensive testwork with AG, ball and stirred milling the flowsheet was optimized to take full advantage of each grinding mill’s strengths to reach the required final grind size. Laboratory work was verified in the pilot plant to optimize the energy efficiency of each grinding step while ensuring adequate liberation at each step for sufficient gangue rejection. By using three stages of grinding, the ball mill can best be employed in ensuring all top size gangue material is liberated and removed in the second magnetic separation step. The inclusion of the IsaMill, with its inherent steep product size distribution, as the tertiary grinding stage ensured that maximum grade was achieved and simplified the downstream process while giving further improvements in total grinding capital and operating costs. In this way the combination of the two technologies downstream from the AG mill is far more efficient than either would be on its own by reducing the total installed power by 1/3 and annual grinding media cost by 2/3.

There are many technologies available today in terms of fire and life safety in road tunnels. So many in fact that it is becoming more and more difficult for clients and contractors alike to determine what they want and what they need. From a clientÆs perspective, fire and life safety is about protection to its infrastructure and to the public at large. Conversely, the contractor is looking to meet its æfit for purposeÆ or ædeem to complyÆ requirements in the most economic and practicable way. Practices regarding fire and life safety in road tunnels have undergone a degree of transformation during the last decade or more throughout the world. This transformation has largely been driven by a series of catastrophic accidents such as the major fires in Europe including the Mont Blanc Tunnel, Tauern Tunnel, Saint-Gothard Tunnel, and now most recently in the CityLink Tunnels in Melbourne. International guidelines produced by organisations such as the Permanent International Association of Road Congresses (PIARC), the European Union, the International Tunnelling Association (ITA) and the US National Fire Protection Authority (NFPA) now provide clients, owners and designers with the tools required to define and specify the required fire and life safety systems in road tunnels. The majority of these tools are based on risk assessment and risk management. Recent road tunnel projects within Australia, however, have not referred solely to such guidelines. Clients have opted to prescribe different or additional fire and life safety requirements within the projectÆs technical specification documentation (project requirements), leaving designers and contractors with little room to implement alternatives or substitutions. Further, these project requirements are largely dictated by practice established on previous road tunnel projects within Australia. This paper looks at the current international guidelines and practices and undertakes a comparison with the EastLink tunnels in Melbourne and other road tunnels within Australia and makes assessment on whether Australian methods are the most appropriate for clients and contractors alike. Focus is directed to the key elements of fire and life safety such as:traffic envelope, barrier arrangements and emergency walkway provisions;deluge systems;drainage systems;fire rating requirements;tunnel ventilation systems;cross passage provisions;fire safety assessment;critical intelligence systems including help phones, CCTV, incident detection, tunnel signage, etc; andexternal tunnel control systems.

Obtaining a representative sample of bulk materials in process industries is critical to providing valid data for process control and custody transfer (valuation). The accuracy of a sample, that is to say how well the sample represents the material in the process, is directly related to how well the process can be controlled and to how much a product may be worth. Sampling accuracy then is in fact related to bottom line profitability.Sampling theory offers information and equations on how to take a representative sample from a process, however, the actual practice of extracting a sample from the process can be more of an art.Key sampling variables include product specifications such as bulk density, particle distribution, material conveyance, practical sampler location, sampler type and sample frequency and volume/mass.This paper discusses basic sampling theory, sampling methods, types of samplers, how to develop a ‘real world’ sampling system and current manual and automated samplers.Key points include ‘practical precision and variance’, material properties, flow properties, direct sampling versus indirect sampling, sampler types and applications.CITATION:Powalisz, J E, 2014. The Kauri Block (Hauraki Hill) andMatawai Valley epithermal vein systems, near Coromandel township, are hosted by hydrothermally altered Miocene andesites and Mesozoic greywackes of the Coromandel VolcanicZone. The hydrological setting of both geothermal systems was probably that of an andesitic volcanic arc. Two types of veins are recognised: 1. Simple veins composed of fine comb quartz, and 2. Complex (breccia) veins composed of vein fragments of sulphide-bearing, chalcedonic silica cemented by saccharoidal and fine comb quartz.   Pyrite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, and gold form the ore minerals. Both deposits historically exploited hypogene and supergene bonanza gold.   At Hauraki Hill, breccia veins up to 7m wide contain abundant fragments of recrystallised colloform banded-crustiform textured quartz veins ('Golden Cross' style) and were probably major channels for ascending deep mineralising fluids. Alteration assemblages are zoned with the higher elevations of Hauraki Hill-Bunkers Hill characterised by strong kaolinite alteration whereas deeper levels are dominated by illitic clays.   At Matawai, complex veins and hydrothermal breccias pinch and swell, and inflect, within a total width of veining and alteration that exceeds 50 m. The greywacke host rocks are altered to an assemblage of illitesmectite, quartz, chlorite and pyrite although there are pockets of kaolinite.   The proposed genesis of veins and ores in both deposits invokes episodic rapid mixing (quenching) of hot mineralising reservoir fluids with cool acid condensate waters, whilst acidification and increased fO2 triggered gold deposition. These hydrothermal systems heated up during their later stages and at Matawai visible gold was deposited from a late mesothermal stage. The main conclusion is that the northwest CVZ has excellent potential for large gold deposits (= 30 tonnes contained gold).

Traditionally, most Australian iron ore mining operations have been surface-based. Processing plants were designed to handle dry ores. In recent years mining operations in the Pilbara have progressively moved below the water table exposing wet, sticky ores which have caused lost efficiency in screening operations as particles tend to agglomerate and adhere, blinding screening media. Miners and vibrating screen manufacturers have experimented with a shift from linear motion to elliptical motion screens. Elliptical motion conveys and lifts particles. Effective on flat deck (horizontal and inclined) or sloping decks it can be configured to provide a controlled transport rate, applying pressure in all directions to maximise screening efficiency. In practice, elliptical motion screens have proven to be effective in dislodging sticky particles from screening media, reducing blinding rates and improving screen efficiency. Moisture and clay content change during the life of a mine. These changes are sometimes the effect of seasonal rainfall, in other cases due to increased groundwater and clay content as mining operations go deeper. To compensate for such changes and optimise screen efficiency, changing the ‘shape’ of elliptical screen motion is required. This has traditionally required shutting down processing plants and making mechanical screen adjustments. Plant downtime is costly and machine adjustment has been a ‘trial and error’ practice. This paper will explore the results of a field trial that is currently underway in Brazil of a next generation elliptical motion screen design that allows operators to make changes to exciter rotational direction, speed and screen stroke angle, through electronic drive phase control. The machine’s electronic drive system synchronisation is enhanced for stability with a unique mechanical timing system. Operating at up to 6 g, screen adjustments can be made on the fly without stopping production. Early trial results are showing up to 50 per cent improvement in screen efficiency compared with traditional elliptical motion machines under certain feed conditions.

The Mine granite at the Ardlethan tinfield is dated by Rb-Sr on a muscovite concentrate at not less than 417 ± 2.5 Ma (2s), consistent with the intrusion of this granitic body into folded Late Ordovician sediments. A combination of Rb-Sr and K-Ar evidence suggests a slightly younger age, 41O ± 2.5 Ma, both for the neighbouring Ardlethan Granite and for the hydrothermal alteration of the Mine granite, with which the tin is associated.On this basis, the somewhat high 206Pb/204Pb of two galena samples from within the hydrothermal alteration zone is best explained by an increase in U/Pb of order 10 per cent during a geochemical event in the Late Precambrian, in the rocks which eventually yielded the Pb to the mineralising fluid. This earlier event probably increased Th/U in these rocks as well, by as much as 5 per cent. If these reconstructions are valid, the lower-than-average U/Pb implied for the original Precambrian source rock bespeaks a mantle component of marginally greater proportion than for "average orogene".

Although the Diamond that is cut and polished and made up into an article of jewellery, is so well known, there are, comparatively speaking, very few outside the industry who know this beautiful crystal in the crude state, as turned out ofNature's laboratory, and the means employed in winning this precious stone.This article is written with the endeavour to give the reader some idea of the geological formations in which the Diamond occurs, and as it is reported that Diamonds have been found in Western Australia, as well as in other parts of the Australian Colonies, a few hints as to the means employed in working the ground in South Africa may be of use to those intending to prqsecute the search in this country. The general geological formation of the South African Diamond Fields is Lacustrine shales and sandstones, intersected by dykes of various eruptive rocks, varying considerably in their character. and in places vesicular in texture, the vesicules being more or less filled in with zeolites by permeating waters.

The Epithermal and Mesothermal Gold Prospectivity modelling projects carried out by Crown Minerals provided explorers in New Zealand with a new compilation of historical exploration data combined with new geological information from the GNS QMap 1:250,000 scale mapping project. These data were used to produce predictive mineral potential maps for gold mineralisation in New Zealand. The aim of these projects, to stimulate mineral exploration and investment in exploration, has been successful with eight new companies acquiring new tenement positions and committing significant exploration expenditure to exploring in New Zealand in the coming years. The projects were done at a national scale and consequently not all exploration data were compiled into the prospectivity models. Several of the new companies recognised the value of the prospectivity modelling work and committed exploration funds to continue the modelling process. They recognised a need to compile the remaining data and run the models again to allow detailed exploration targeting. Detailed data compilations including digitising historic exploration stream sediment sample, rock chip sample, soil sample and drilling data has been completed. New models have been completed in Otago for mesothermal gold mineralisation and in the Coromandel and Northland for epithermal gold. The new models have been compared with the original regional scale models and used to target prospect scale exploration. This work has allowed exploration models for epithermal and mesothermal mineralisation in New Zealand to be refined. More importantly this work has identified significant areas with potential to host gold mineralisation with little or no systematic geochemical data including soil sampling or drilling. Exploration work programs have been designed to acquire these missing data and exploration funds have now been committed to test the areas highlighted by the prospectivity modelling. In summary, the Epithermal and Mesothermal Gold Prospectivity modelling work has successfully attracted new investment and ideas to the exploration scene in New Zealand. The projects had an estimated cost of NA$250 000 and will in the next two years, just through exploration expenditure, attract more than NZ$10 M in investment. If a mine is discovered the return on investment will be considerably greater.

Greater use should be made of lineations in investigations of the engineering properties of rock masses and in structural studies guiding prospecting programmes.A prominent alignment of elongate mineral grains and stretched pebbles usually marks the primary direction in which metamorphic rocks have been extended by flow. In local adjustment zones separating masses that have extended different amounts, this lineation has been a direction of slip. Kinks and crumples resulting from this slip lie in secondary lineation directions transverse to the primary mineral lineation.During deformation relatively mobile materials move into dilatant zones caused by irregularities in primary flow directions. This secondary movement transverse to lineated, primary-flow directions is the cause of crenulations and folds with axes parallel to flow lineations.INTRODUCTIONThe arrangement of inequidimensional particles in rocks is rarely statistically random. Platy minerals tend to be parallel to bedding and foliation planes. Elongate particles and linear structures lie most frequently in certain lineation directions. The types of elongate particles in lineated rocks include needle and blade shaped mineral grains, sheared out segregations, and stretched pebbles, amygdules, and aolites.Crenulations and kinks are the most common of the linear structures involved.Faint lineations are readily overlooked. Even strong lineations have been ignored. Underground mining for gold began in Beaconsfield in 1877 and development of the Tasmania Mine saw the sinking of multiple shafts, including the Hart Shaft over the ensuing 35 years. The mine closed in 1914 at a depth of 455 m due to prevailing economics, eventually reopening in 1999. The modern mine closed in 2012 after extending the mine from a historical depth of 455 m to the exhaustion of the modern Ore Reserve at a depth of 1210 m. West Tamar Council took over the lease for the immediate area around the Hart Shaft as an extension of the adjacent museum. The Hart Shaft and above ground structures became a significant drawcard for visitors. Tasmania was affected by sustained wet weather during May, June and July of 2016 which caused severe flooding and significant Statewide damage. This uncharacteristically intense wet weather caused saturation of the ground surrounding the Hart Shaft. Eventual shaft failure was first identified in August 2016. The failure of the shaft occurred at approximately 50 m below surface and resulted in a plug of material completely blocking the shaft. Significant surface subsidence affecting the surface infrastructure ensued. Due to the unstable nature of the surrounding material, it was determined that addressing the failure above the blockage would not provide a permanent solution to prevent the continued flow of material into the shaft. Many options to stabilise the shaft were considered, however it was assessed that a concrete plug in the shaft in competent ground at a depth of 100 m below surface and well below the blockage, would provide the only long-term solution. Man-entry was considered unsafe. The solution to access ultimately entailed filling the entire shaft with granular fill up to 100 m depth to act as formwork for a concrete plug. The rising mains at 400 mm and 250 mm diameter, which remained in place in the shaft, provided the avenue for placing the fill and ultimately, the concrete plug. Once the plug was in place the remainder of the shaft up to the underside of the blockage and over the top of the blockage to the surface was successfully filled with a combination of more granular fill and flowable cement stabilised sand. The Hart Shaft and surrounding above ground infrastructure was successfully stabilised and re-opened to tourist access. CITATION:Johnson, D, Turner, A and Hills, P, 2018. Mount Isa Mines Limited operates one of the worldÆs largest underground mines in North West Queensland. ItÆs mining and smelting complex produces copper anode, crude lead bullion (containing silver), and zinc concentrate. Copper is recovered in the Copper Concentrator from chalcopyrite ore, converter smelter slag and rotary holding furnace (RHF) slag via grinding and flotation operations. During 2002 a project to optimise cleaner circuit capacity was commenced. Its aims were to minimise copper losses and minimise slag/chalcopyrite cross contamination by reconfiguring existing flotation equipment and the addition of new flotation capacity. To minimise cross contamination a Jameson Cell was installed and dedicated to cleaning of slag concentrates, which had formerly been conducted by three flotation columns operating in series. The flotation columns were re-configured to operate in parallel and dedicated to upgrading chalcopyrite concentrate. In addition a Jameson Cell was installed to reject entrained copper from a prefloat concentrate consisting of talc and carbonaceous pyrite. This paper discusses the logic behind the cleaner circuit expansion, recent test work relating to the Jameson Cell and the installation and commissioning phases. Difficulties relating to the commissioning are reviewed and the solutions to problems are highlighted. The benefits the reconfigured circuit has provided to Mount Isa Mines are also discussed.

Longwall mining is by far the most common method of underground coal extraction in Australia. Industry trends and expectations are placing increasing emphasis on the reliability and productivity of these operations. Longwalls are becoming wider and longer while retreat rates are continuously increasing due to significant improvements achieved in longwall equipment reliability and automation. This increased longwall productivity is placing significant emphasis on the reliability of longwall panel development.Although there have been significant improvements in the reliability of continuous miners and hydraulic drill rigs, the traditional resin-encapsulated bolt installation is still the principal method used in all major coal producing countries around the world. Anglo American realised that an opportunity existed to introduce an alternative roof bolt installation technique called ‘spin-to-stall’ (STS) into Australia. STS was first introduced by Anglo American Coal in South Africa, where it has been successfully used for over a decade, though implementation of South African STS resin in Australia has proven to be near impossible. Therefore, a new STS development project was initiated between Anglo American Coal and Jennmar Australia. The Greymouth Coal Project is a proposal to mine by the application of proven hydraulic, and room and pillar underground mining methods; and to process the equivalent of an average of 1.7 million tonnes per year over a forty-year period. The proposed mine site is located ten kilometres north of Greymouth, on the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Of the three separate mineable seam groups, the thick Main Seam Group, which makes up 77% of the total resource, will be mined by hydraulic mining technology.   It is proposed to market and produce a high volatile bituminous type coal with low ash (6%) and sulphur (0.4%). Because the inherent ash content is low, the requirement for coal treatment will only be the use of a single cell jig circuit to control the effects of rock dilution and partings. The resulting coal product is tentatively planned to be transported by rail to the port at Lyttelton for loading on to Panamax or Post Panamax size vessels.
