The removal of nitrogen from a nitrogenized low-carbon sheet steel that contained 0.011 wt pct N was determined during heat treatment in Hz-N, mixtures. TIze process followed a first-order rate law; that is, plots of the logarithm of nitrogen content in steel were linear with the time of treatment at a given temperature. The rate of removal increased with an increase in temperature from 900" to 1300°F. By 1400°F the rate in dry hydrogen had decreased to a value intermediate between the rates at 1200" and at 1300°F; in wet (2.47 vol pct water vapor) hydrogen the rate at 1400°F was less than the rate at 1300°F and nearly the same as the rate at 1200OF. The rate at a given temperature increased as the 3/2 power of hydrogen concentration in the atmosphere. While wet atmosplzeres were generally more effective than the corresponding dry atmosplzeres, the effect of water vapor was much less pronounced than the influence of hydrogen content. NITROGEN is the principal agent in the strain aging of ferrite, the effect of carbon being secondary.' To eliminate the return of the yield point after straining and aging, it is claimed2 that the amount of nitrogen in solution in steel must be reduced to 0.0002 wt pct. Strong nitride-forming elements (titanium, vanadium, zirconium, and aluminum) can act to eliminate strain aging by combining with nitrogen. It is extremely difficult to decrease the nitrogen content in commercial steels to the low level required by conventional coil annealing because of the poor contact between the strip surface and the reactive atmosphere. However, a variety of gas-metal reactions can be effected by use of the open-coil annealing method,3 in which the metal surface is fully exposed to the atmosphere. With this possibility in mind, the Applied Research Laboratory has studied the influence of time, temperature, and atmosphere composition on the removal of nitrogen from low-carbon sheet steel. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL WORK Samples from a commercial nitrogenized low-carbon steel (0.010 in. thick) in the cold-reduced condition were used. The chemical composition of this steel is given in Table I. The gas mixtures used are listed in Table 11. The moisture content in the "wet" annealing atmospheres was controlled at a +70°F dew point (2.47 vol pct water vapor) by passing the gas mixture through a glass tube packed with a solid mixture of 10 pct anhydrous oxalic acid and 90 pct oxalic acid dihydrate held at 127°F; this technique has been described previously.4 For "dry" atmospheres, the gas mixtures were passed through a cold trap immersed in liquid nitrogen. A hinged-top Hevi-Duty electric furnace was used with a Vycor-glass furnace tube. A study was made of numerical techniques for solving the large sets of simultaneous equations that arise in the mathematical mode ling of oil reservoir behavior. It was found that noniterative techniques, such as the Alternating Direction Implicit (ADI) method, as well as some other finite difference approximations, produce oscillatory or unsmooth results for large time steps. Estimates of time step sizes sufficient to avoid such behavior are given. A comparison was made of the Point Successive Over-Relaxation (PSOR), Two-Line Cyclic Chebyshev Semi-Iterative SOR (2LCC), and iterative ADI methods, with respect to speed of solution of a test problem. It was found that, when applicable, iterative ADI is fastest for problems involving many points, while 2LCC is preferable for smaller problems. INTRODUCTION With the advent of high speed, large memory, digital computers, there has been an increasing emphasis on the development of improved methods for simulating and predicting reservoir performance. Two-dimensional, three-phase reservoir models with various combinations of PVT effects, as well as gravity and capillary forces, are common throughout the industry. Such models are also available through consulting firms, to anyone desiring to use them. Three-dimensional models will probably be practical in only a few years. We conducted a study of some of the numerical methods used for solving the large sets of simultaneous equations that arise in such models. KEYNOTE of the technical sessions of the Iron and Steel Division at the Annual Meeting was struck by Leo F. Reinartz in his Howe Memorial Lecture on "The Development of Research and Quality Control in a Modern Steel Mill." In describing recent developments in steel-producing practices at the American Rolling Mill Co. the co-ordination of practical observation and directed research with operations was stressed and was shown to have resulted in economical production of steels of uniformly high quality. Empirical methods based on inaccurate and incomplete experience resulted in the production of commercial products of variable quality and were recognized as inadequate; a research program was therefore initiated that has been justified by its fruits. To name a few outstanding achievements such as Armco iron, steel for electrical sheets, wide continuous strip of superior surface and quality, and non-aging steel is not sufficient to summarize the results of this increasing effort toward better steel products. In addition to the development of new products the faithful observation of operating procedures, the co-ordination of the resulting information, and the standardization of processes have made the steel of today much more uniform and thus more economical and useful to the nation.

WHEN we want to interpret some problem which faces us at the present, if that problem be a social or political movement, we turn to the pages of history for 'information. If the problem be one of science or of industry we turn to the library of the subject and endeavor to translate the present from the experience of the past. I wonder if you would bear with me for a few minutes as I look back to the time when I was going through mining school and looking forward with hope, it is true and with confidence also, but still with some trepidation and an occasional qualm, to the month of June when the class of 1897 would be hunting jobs. Those were the years 1893 to 1897. Those years saw the Treasury of the United States so empty of gold that the President had to appeal to financiers to accept the country's promises to pay in return for $100,000,000 in gold. And the invectives that were hurled at both their heads for such a betrayal of the people sound strangely similar to those you read today being daily written and screamed at another President for taking us into the League of Nations or for not issuing bonds in huge amounts for unemployment relief, or for not adopting somebody else's particular specific for the relief of hard times.

ALTHOUGH much effort has been devoted to the problem, the nature of plastic flow in bcc metals is still not fully understood. Some of the difficulties encountered stem from the scarcity of information on orientation effects and the uncertainty as to the glide system in these metals. In an attempt to provide some of this information, the present investigation was carried out, using zone-refined molybdenum single crystals deformed in tension and in direct shear. Considerable evidence exists to indicate that the primary slip system for molybdenum is (110) <111>.1,2 Figs. 1 and 2 indicate that this is, indeed, the case for direct shear at room temperature (see Ref. 3 for a description of the shear-testing equipment and procedure). Moreover, from Fig. 2, the shear stress on the (123) is lower than that on the (112). This would be the case if, as has been suggested,4,5 slip on these two planes is in reality com-

K ENTUCKY&apos;S first acid-grade fluorspar flotation Kmill, shown in Fig. 1, was placed in operation Aug. 1, 1952, by the Pennsylvania Salt Manufacturing Co. at Mexico, Ky. During 1951 a critical shortage of acid-grade fluorspar developed and it became necessary for the company to produce part of its fluorspar requirements. In 1951 the company purchased the Crider and Lennen metallurgical fluorspar mill and an adjacent stockpile of tailing at Mexico, Ky. The tailing, assaying about 26 pct calcium fluoride, originated from log washer and jig mill concentrators in the area. As the mill did not have a fluorspar dryer or convenient rail facilities, the company leased the Burleson concentrator at Marion, Ky., where these facilities were available. At Marion, Ky., on the Illinois Central Railroad, dry acid-grade fluorspar is transported direct to the company&apos;s Calvert City, Ky., hydrofluoric acid plant. The Mexico flotation plant was reconditioned and designed to produce acid-grade fluorspar from the jig tailing stockpile. The new plant flowsheet is shown in Fig. 2. The ore feed, old tailing, which contains 10 pct of waste rock and coarse gravel assaying approximately 8 pct CaF,, is bound together by sticky clay

The Ten Section oil field is located in the San Joaquin Valley in Kern County, California. about 12 miles southwest of Bakersfield in Township 30 South, Ranges 25 and 26 East. The accumulation is in a low relief anticlinal dome and has a productive area of approximately 2,200 acres. Discovered in 1936 as a result of seismic work, it was the first field on the floor of the Valley to obtain production. It had a small primary gas cap, and since its inception has been produced by depletion with controlled withdrawal from the gas cap to minimize blowthrough. STRUCTURE AND STRATIGRAPHY The Ten Section structure is an elongated anticlinal dome with flank dips of only about 7 degrees. A map of the field, now fully developed, and a composite log are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Contours shown on the map are on the top of the first zone, or Marker XA as indicated on the composite log. As shown, the field has a productive closure of only some 350 feet, and there apparently is no faulting in the reservoir. The productive measures in Ten Section are of Upper Miocene age and are known as the Stevens sand. They contain thin, irregular shale or siltstone streaks which vary considerably in stratigraphic position and thickness and apparently are rather discontinuous. As a result, individual sands and shales cannot be correlated over any appreciable area, which makes it difficult to subdivide the sand body into separate zones which are distinct throughout the field. However, there are two fairly persistent siltstone bodies that at the time of development were considered to divide the productive measures into three - zones. The first, or uppermost zone is productive over the entire field and has an average thickness of 180 feet, of which some 65 per cent is sand. It had a primary. gas cap in the crestal area with an areal extent of 930 acres. The second zone has a productive area somewhat smaller than the first zone, but it did not have any original gas cap. It has an average thickness of about 360 feet, of which 55 per cent is sand. The third zone has a very limited areal extent and a maximum productive thickness of 100 feet, of which 80 per cent is sand. Recently, a deeper oil accumulation, termed the "53" sand, was discovered, but it is not discussed in this analysis. In the first and second zones the water table was at 7,980 feet subsea, while in the third zone it was at 8,080 feet subsea. RESERVOIR CHARACTERISTICS Sand Characteristics The Stevens sand in Ten Section is hard and well consolidated, and numerous wells were cored for core analysis. Core data on four representative wells are shown, plotted beside the electric logs in Figs. 3 to 6. The average porosity is 20 per cent, with porosities ranging from 15 to 30 per cent. It is estimated, from cores taken with oil base muds, that the interstitial water content is about 40 per cent. The mechanics of the continuous sintering process are briefly reviewed and the application of this process for the beneficiation of principal minerals used in making cement is shown. Pilot plant tests using pyrobeneficiation techniques were conducted with mixtures of limestone and shale in various ratios. Results are illustrated and show the percentage removal of carbon, carbonates, sulfur, alkalies, and volatiles as a function of the limestone-shale ratio. Tests with varying quantities of solid fwls, added to mixtures containing limestone and shale in a 4 to 1 ratio, were made to attain optimum elimination of the volatile constituents. Experimental results show that 90 pct of these constituents were removed during the calcination sintem&apos;ng process. The advantages of using the beneficiated material for making cement are discussed with regard to prepam&apos;ng, handling, and clinkering operations. A sintering process for treating raw materials or kiln waste products which contain high amounts of alkaline materials is described. Tests were performed with a high alkaline waste dust mixed in a 1 to 1 ratio with raw cement meal. The data from these tests and others using different halides for aiding alkali removal are evaluated by the alkali content of the cement clinker. Test results showed that the Dwight-Lloyd process could be applied with facility in beneficiating raw materials for cement making. Substantial quantities of deleterious volutile constituents were removed by calcining and sintering techniques. The continuous sintering process has been applied for a number of years as a means of beneficiating minerals for subsequent conversion to merchantable products. The process was developed and first used for nonferrous metallurgical applicatfons. However, it has risen to prominence for ferrous metallurgical applications where last year in the U.S. and Canada nearly 40 million tons of iron ore were treated by grate firing processes. Through the years of process development many investigators have realized the versatility of the sintering process and have directed experiments toward the use of it for applications with nonmetallic minerals. These have included calcining limestone, carbonizing coal, expanding shale, and burning cement raw meal. Today commercial sintering plants produce cement clinker from mixtures of limestone and shale, lightweight aggregate from shale or clay, and calcined products from phosphate shale. The mechanics of the downdraft sintering process have been presented by many authors. In general practice the materials to be agglomated are mixed as moistened fines with a solid fuel and this mixture is spread uniformly on the grates of the sintering machine. The charge is then momentarily directed under an ignition furnace. After ignition a continuous downdraft of air promotes combustion of the fuel and through heat transfer particles become partially fused into a coherent mass. This is cooled from continued draft induced after combustion. Many investigators have shown that distinct zones are formed during the process of sintering iron ores. At the midway point of the sintering process these are prominent and are, respectively, from the top of the bed to the bottom, comprised of a cooling zone of sintered material, a combustion zone of sinter formation, a calcination zone, a drying zone, and a zone of unreacted materials. Completion of sintering occurs near the discharge end of the machine where the firing zone approaches either the grates or grate dressing material called hearth layer. Here the peak draft temperature usually can be noted in the windboxes. The zonal pattern has been illustrated with the use of graphs which show thermal gradients as they progress through the bed of materials during sintering. Fig. 1 shows, in simplified form, thermal gradients existing when clinkering cement on a sintering machine. The thermal gradients illustrated are for periods of initiation, midway and completion of the clinkering process. FOR over fifty years the Spanish mine, 21 miles northeast of Nevada City, in Nevada County, California, has been one of the Bradley properties. Between 1883 and 1889 it was operated by the late Frederick W. Bradley and P. R. Bradley. The ore averaged only about $1 a ton at that time but the mine was credited with a production of about $900,000 in that period. The property was then closed down until 1922, when the Bradley interests reopened it and continued development for the next nine years, when a 50-ton mill was built. This began operation in April, 1931. This was a selective flotation plant, with the tailing treated on Wilfley tables, and operated on ore from the No. 4 and No. 16 tunnel stopes. The Choctaw coal-field is a direct westward extension of the Arkansas coal-field, but its coals are not like Arkansas coals, except in the country immediately adjoining the Arkansas line. From the base of the coal-bearing rocks up to the top of the coalmeasures, I find a total thickness of at least 8500 feet. This great mass of coal-bearing rocks consists of an alternation of slates, shales, sandstones and coal-beds, with their accompanying under-beds of fire-clay. Only one small bed of limestone was observed. This occurs near the middle of the series; it is about eighteen inches thick, and quite arenaceous. The formation is naturally subdivided by seven or eight thick beds of sandstone, varying from 50 to 200 feet in thickness, the outcropping edges of which form a series of more or less bold " hogback " ridges, the interbedded shales and slate forming the intervening valleys. The base of the coal-series is a massive sandstone, ranging from 100 to 200 feet or more in thickness, lying immediately beneath the Grady coal-bed, which is the lowest known coal. In the district embraced between. the Missouri, Kansas and Texas railroad and the Arkansas State line, this sand-rock usually forms a bold semi-mountainous ridge. This is the ridge through which the St. Louis and San Francisco railroad passes at Bryan station, where the Grady coal-bed is opened and worked, from which point it can be traced westward without difficulty, passing about three miles north of Le Flor on the same railroad, thence west to the " Little Narrows " (which is merely a gap in the ridge), &apos;and beyond to a point two miles west of the Thompson-McKinney place, where it swings abruptly north for a mile or more, only to resume immediately its westward course, forming for some miles the northern boundary of the valley known as the " Boiling-Springs Prairie," beyond which it trends somewhat

SPEED-UP of production of crude oil and its products, accompanied by rising prices and the organization of the industry on a war basis, featured the economic aspects of petroleum in 1941. Early in the year American tankers were urgently requested by the British to replace losses and offset slower transit under convoy. Some forty American owned tankers were first assigned to Britain and an additional forty-odd ships were transferred during the summer. This threatened to reduce our transportation facilities from Gulf ports to the Eastern seaboard below requirements, especially should sinkings have increased and the British needed more ships. Co-ordinator Ickes began preparations for restricting gasoline consumption in the Eastern district and plans were formulated for the construction of an emergency trunk pipe line from Texas to New York and Philadelphia refining centers, and for a gigantic tanker-building program. Sales of new oil-heating units in the East practically ceased. The companies were urged to transport as much oil as possible by tank car and by October 140,000 barrels of oil per day were reaching the East Coast district by rail, sufficient to meet 8 per cent of total requirements. But British sinkings from July through October decreased 63 per cent compared with the four months ended June 30, Britain began the return of tankers, the construction plans were dropped, and the threatened shortage was thus averted.

WITHIN recent years people have begun to realize the importance and significance of the mining and allied industries. The leading part the engineer plays in civilization is becoming recognized. However accurate quantitative knowledge of the industrial importance of mining is still seldom possessed except by those close to this business. It is true that there are a few who go to the extreme and represent the whole progress of civilization as a reflection of man&apos;s gradual mastery of mineral utilization, but on the whole, the magnitude of the-industry is underestimated. In this paper I shall call attention briefly to the importance of mining in the United States, in Canada, and in the world. Ordinarily, the annual primary mineral production of the United States is about $5,500,000,000. The average for the last 5 years has been a little over that, but last year, sadly enough, it was less than 31/4 billion. Just now, we are on the decline, and have been for the last two years. In Canada, the 5-year average was about $268,000,000, and last year it was 227 million. Due in part to gold mines (in 1930, for the first time, Canada&apos;s gold production exceeded that of the United States), the Canadian average is holding up better than ours. Average world mineral production over the last -5 years has been estimated at about $12,000,000;000 whereas in 1931 it was less than than 8 billion.

For the past two and one-half years, various emission control strategies were jointly developed by the University of Arizona and the Homer City Owners to com- ply with the clean air requirements at its Homer City Power Plant. Some of the available options for the SO2 emission control by the Homer City Owners were:l)cleaning of run-of-mine coal,2) scheduling of mining operations at its captive mines, 3) blending the captive mine coal with externally purchased low sulfur coa1,and 4) placing a partial FGD system. This paper describes two specific emission control strategies developed and implemented. These are: 1) production scheduling at the mining face to minimize sulfur variability, and 2) external purchasing of low sulfur coal for further blending. The main objective of this paper is to share our experiences on implementing the developed strategies. This paper emphasizesthe need for proper mine planning on a short-term basis, if the power plant is to meet the desired objective.

There has been considerable interest in the possible use of titanium in magnesium alloys.&apos; Zirconium has shown some promise in this connection2 and its general similarity with titanium suggests that the latter might act in a similar manner. A literature survey revealed that quantitative data on the Mg-Ti system was unavailable. Several patents3 have claimed that titanium additions from 0.2 to 4 pct to magnesium alloys were possible, but no mention was made as to the form in which the titanium existed in the alloy. Kro114 succeeded in introducing only traces of titanium into magnesium by bubbling TiCl4 through the metal under argon or by reacting it with sodium titanium fluoride. The application of theoretical data given by Carapella5 based on Hume-Rothery&apos;s principles, involving atomic size factor, crystal structure, valency and the electro-chemical factor, suggests that a Mg-Ti alloy is a favorable case, and the system appeared to warrant experimental examination. Experimental Procedure and Results THERMAL ANALYSIS If titanium is appreciably soluble in magnesium, a change in the melting point of the magnesium might be detectable using standard cooling curve methods. Magnesium was melted in graphite crucibles under an argon atmosphere, the assembly being enclosed in a silica tube. Graphite thermocouple protection tubes served also to stir the melts. The apparatus was very similar to Fig 1, with the addition of a refractory and baffle system to prevent undue heat losses from the top of the crucible. Chromel-alumel thermocouples were calibrated using Al of 99.97 pct purity. Dominion Magnesium Limited sup- plied redistilled high purity magnesium of the analysis given above. Titanium was added in three different forms: 1. Titanium powder —100 mesh, from the Titanium Alloy Manufacturing Co., Niagara Falls, N. Y. 2. Sheet titanium from the U.S. Bureau of Mines, produced by Mg reduction of TiCl4. 3. Magnesium —50 pct titanium master alloy from Metal Hydrides Inc., Beverly, Mass. The melting point of the high purity magnesium used was measured experimentally as 651.0°C. More than a dozen tests were conducted using titanium from the three sources referred to above, in calculated additions up to 20 pct titanium, at temperatures between the melting point and 1000°C and holding periods up to 6 hr. In no case was evidence obtained of solubility of titanium in magnesium, using inverse-rate and time-temperature curves. The melting point of the magnesium was unchanged within the accuracy of measurement, namely -+0.5°C; and no other thermal arrests were detected. Metallographic investigation of the thermal analysis billets indicated that the titanium additions were apparently mechanically entrapped in the magnesium in segregated areas. Consequently, these samples were not analyzed for titanium. The master alloy proved to be a mechanical mixture of titanium particles in a magne- sium matrix. These results indicated that the titanium solubility, if such existed, could not be obtained by the usual thermal methods. X RAY DIFFRACTION INVESTIGATION In an effort to detect solubility of titanium in magnesium, samples were investigated using both the Debye-Scherrer and the Focusing Back-Reflection methods. Filings from samples of the thermal analysis billets and from pure magnesium were annealed in argon one hour at 350°C to relieve mechanical strain. Measurements made of the interplanar spacings showed no difference between the Mg-Ti samples and pure magnesium. The interplanar spacings could be measured to within 0.0002A, and the greatest variation found was 0.0004A, in the back-reflection method. The diffraction lines for magnesium were not shifted by the titanium additions indicating that the solid solubility of titanium in magnesium is of a very low order—less than 0.5 pct. From both diffraction methods, a d or interplanar spacing of 0.817A was obtained for the redistilled high purity magnesium. This latter value is not given in the standard X ray diffraction cards for magnesium metal or vacuum distilled magnesium. Theoretical calculations for a close-packed hexagonal space lattice for magnesium indicate that the planes {2134) should give a line which was found. The relative intensity for this reflection at 0.817A is slightly less than that at 0.870k for magnesium.
