1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1980, 13 companies operated 33 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 3 firms accounting for 62% of production. Washington, Oregon, and Montana accounted for 30% of the total production; Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas 19%; Tennessee, Alabama, and North Carolina 15%; other central and eastern States 36%. Based on published producer prices output of primary metal in 1980 was valued at over $7 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Packaging accounted for an estimated 26% of domestic consumption in 1980, building 22%, transportation 21%, electrical 12%, consumer durables 7%, and other uses 12%.

Ensuring that diesel particulate matter (DPM) levels in underground metal and non-metal mines are maintained below statutory limits is an essential requirement of mine ventilation systems. However, despite the cost of providing ventilation, air ventilation rates are usually based upon models, assumptions, or measurements integrated over long durations rather than actual need. Real-time measurement of DPM, interpreted in terms of mine activity schedules, can offer better ventilation management to keep DPM within regulated levels while controlling costs. This work presents data from three demonstration sites with in-mine applications of an environmental particulate sensor that measured black carbon (BC) as a surrogate for DPM.Aethalometers are a class of environmental monitors that measure the light absorbance of aerosol particles at several optical wavelengths. A model AE33 Aethalometer was operated in three separate mines for periods of two weeks, three months, and seven-plus months, and the data was reported in real time as a concentration of BC. Concentration of aromatic organic compounds, which can indicate other forms of combustion, was also reported. The data was used to:- measure the relative efficiency of a new scale-model DPM air scrubber- determine if ventilation could be reduced in a shotcrete loading facility without compromising air quality- evaluate diurnal and weekly DPM levels in a large-entry stone mine. Instrument data were displayed locally and stored for later downloading in all cases. In one mine, the instrument was connected to a local controller, and in another it was connected to the mine’s underground network so that DPM data was presented in real time to a display in the mine ventilation engineering office on the surface.The results showed that the air scrubber removes from 82 per cent to 95 per cent of the DPM; that DPM produced during shotcrete loading is only a minor part of overall DPM levels; and that wide variations in DPM levels exist in the limestone operation. The DPM monitor operated continuously for extended periods in these underground environments. The only maintenance required was the routine replacement of filter tape, typically on a two-week schedule. A sample diluter, which is currently being tested, could extend the intervals between filter changes. The over-all apparent single-phase permeability of fracture-rock systems was studied using two different two-dimensional models. In a strict sense the results are applicable only to these models, yet may give some insight into real reseruoir behavior. The regular fracture-matrix model can have any number of regular fracture sets. All fractures within each set have the same orientation, width and spacing. The gross behavior is amlytically equivalent to that of an anisotropic permeable medium. In the heterogeneous fracture systems, individual fracture conductivities vary within a two-dinensioml network pattern. A computer program calculates the overall permeability after the conductivities are randomly placed in the network. The calculated permeability depends upon the distribution of these conductivities and the particular fracture pattern into which they are placed. Although detailed information on actual reseruoir fracture systems is not available, this study shows how some of the possible variables may affect obserued gross reservoir characteristics. INTRODUCTION Characteristics of reservoir rocks are determined by direct (core analysis) or indirect (logging and production tests) examination. Both methods, singly and together, are widely used in reservoir evaluations. For fractured reservoirs a problem exists in relating characteristics of cores to the in situ reservoir properties. Knowing fracture characteristics can be of value in determining production mechanisms. Because of the limitations of observation, the intimate details of a fractured rock system will never be known. One approach in analyzing fractures is to study the behavior of some conceptually simple models. The two models analyzed contain features which may be realistic, yet are mathematically tractable. Flow is considered in two dimensions only, with the plane of interest at right angles with the fractures. This concept represents the horizontal flow in a reservoir system with the fractures oriented vertically. Only single-phase, laminar flow is considered. The regular fracture-rock system permeability is calculable from a simple analytical expression. The heterogeneous system requires a computer program for calculating overall permeability.

"The size of mills driven by ring-gear or by a gearless solution has significantly increased in the last years. This has created additional challenges for the driven equipment. The requirements for the mechanical devices and the power grid have become more demanding. Controlled soft starting and operation, especially in dual pinion mills, as well as the protection of the equipment has gained importance. The selection of the drive solution for the mill therefore becomes more critical. Besides the classical criteria such as performance, efficiency and capital costs other factors come in the evaluation of the system such as flexibility and optimization of operation, reliability and the ageing of the grinding equipment.Variable speed solutions offer significant advantages over conventional fixed speed drives due to their application specific features and process optimization capabilities, even for ball mills where these are not seen yet as a must.The initial capital costs are higher than some of the direct on-line solutions however the benefits for the operation during the lifetime of the mill generated by the use of converter solutions justify the additional higher investment.INTRODUCTIONThe method of powering mills such as AG, SAG and Ball has a long and technically interesting history. It can be said; almost every decade in the last half century had its own trend. The trend was dominated by the market demand, by the process development and requirement of the mechanical and the electrical technology but mostly by the price of the applied technology.All has started about 50 years ago with mill diameters less than 20 feet driven by fix speed synchronous or wound rotor motors with the power of about 2 MW. Around 10 years later, the mill sizes increased, but the necessary torque could not be transmitted by one pinion therefore dual pinion solutions were developed to power the mills. However, realization of the dual pinion solution was only possible when load could be evenly shared between the two pinions."

This report summarizes the U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluation of the mineral resources of eight roadless areas in several National Forests in Montana. The areas are amoung those that have been proposed as additions to the National Wilderness Presevation System In various sessions of the U.S. Congress. Mineral Commodities present include gold (lode and placer), silver, copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, tungsten, rare-earth elements, fluorite, and barite. Numerous mineral deposit types occur. Past production was from gold placers and vein-type deposits. There is potential for development of large volume porphyry copper-molybdenum, disseminated gold, stratabound copper-silver, and exhalative massive-sulfide metallic deposits. A substantial increase in metal prices is needed before any known vein-type deposits will be economic.

Researchers, medical organizations, statisticians, and others often use data on the nature and rate of occurrence of occupational diseases in directing their efforts and plans. Very often this information is developed from the reports of the States which describe the nature of work¬men's compensation claims and awards and the frequency with which they are made. To be meaningful, the statis¬tical information must be viewed in the context of the State laws involved. There is considerable variation among the laws of the different States. The Bureau of Mines has responsibilities for protecting the health of persons employed in the mineral industries and for the development of useful mineral products. To assist the Bureau in the accomplishment of its objectives, this compilation has been undertaken. For the benefit of the mineral industries, and any others who may have a similar interest, this volume is made available. An earlier compilation of the Bureau of Mines on this subject was published in 1952.4 However, during the intervening years, sufficient changes have been made in State laws to warrant completely recompiling the information. This publication includes the laws of the States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Is¬lands through 1964. Only those portions of the workmen's compensation laws which apply to or as ' related to occupational diseases are presented, and in each case enacted additions to and deletions from the basic law have been incorporated into the text of the law, thus snak¬ing it unnecessary to search out the various amendments made each year.

The use of a thickener, without filtration, to produce a non-settling paste (also called thickened tailings) with non-Newtonian rheology has been practiced in Australia for many years for the disposal of red mud. The application of paste thickening technology outside of alumina is relatively new. Interest and installations in paste thickening are rapidly growing. Water shortages and environmental pressures make consideration of thickening tailings to solids concentrations within the paste range necessary in most new tailings projects. The paste thickeners at the DeBeers CTP plant in Kimberley, South Africa are the latest example of paste tailings disposal on the surface, also called “stacking”. Houman (2003) The use of a paste thickener as an alternative to filtration for mine paste backfill is a more recently developed application. This paper describes the principles of design and general operating characteristics of a paste thickener compared to the conventional and high-rate thickener. The application and operating performance of paste thickeners in mine backfill is discussed as an example. An integrated approach to process design is described that matches the performance of the thickener, pumping system, and application on a common rheological basis to ensure that none of these steps prevents achieving process performance targets.

A laboratory investigation was carried out on the characterization and beneficiation of sillimanite ore. Petrographic analysis indicated that the ore consisted of massive elongated sillimanite grains in a matrix of hematite, garnet, feldspar and silica. A procedure for estimating the percentage of sillimanite was developed using float-sink and magnetic-separation techniques. A liberation study was carried out to determine the level of size reduction required to achieve sufficient liberation while ensuring that gravity concentration techniques would be applicable. Laboratory testing was performed on the liberated ore to investigate the applicability of using wide-angle dense-medium cycloning to upgrade this ore. Initially, medium-only tests were carried out using various size distributions of magnetite and ferrosilicon as the dense-medium solids to evaluate the effects of operating conditions on medium segregation. Depending on the medium solids and operating conditions, either positive of negative differentials (difference between the relative densities of the underflow and overflow streams) were obtained. Based on these results, separation tests were performed to process nominal -1.2-mm sillimanite ore. The results indicated that sillimanite concentration could be obtained using a medium relative density that was much lower than would typically be used in a dense-medium cyclone separation.

The complex organic chemicals in coal differ from those in petroleum mainly by the ratio of carbon atoms to hydrogen atoms; this ratio is about 2 for coal and 1 for petroleum. By changing the ratio, coal can be converted into compounds similar to those found in petroleum. In. very simplified form, omitting here the special conditions required, the paths by which this can be done are: [ ] Part or all of the coal is first gasified by reaction with steam and oxygen, either in a gasifier or while the coal is still in place underground. The resulting gas is mainly hydrogen and carbon monoxide, with impurities that .must be removed before further processing by one of the following routes.

IN a paper published three years ago,' the term "silicic chemistry" was used for the first time to emphasize the increasing importance of the chemistry of silicon in science and technology. The development through which the colloid chemistry of siliceous matter has gone since then is in itself ample proof that the coining of this new term for this branch of colloid science was not presumptuous. Until quite recently, however, silicic chemistry concerned itself only with the composition and colloidal properties of natural and synthetic siliceous matter, but had not paid much attention to the genesis of this matter, particularly to that of the clay minerals. What is even more disturbing, particularly from an educational point of view, is the fact that neither mineralogy, geology, nor metallurgy has fully realized the important role colloidal phenomena must have played in the genesis of our planet and the formation of minerals generally speaking. Considering the importance of colloid chemistry today in the fields just mentioned, it is not surprising that the theories most agreed upon by geologists and mineralogists for the origin of clay minerals are not acceptable from a strictly colloid chemical point of view for the genesis of these most important and most abundant components of the earth. Of all the theories pertaining to the origin of clay minerals, those still most accepted by geologists and mineralogists are the "residual clay" and the "transported clay" theories.15 The former is based primarily on the assumption that the formation of clay minerals is the result of surface weathering of fresh rocks, or is due to the action of solutions. In this paper a genetic algorithm is used in a heavily jointed rock mass in order to investigate the critical circular slip surface and modification of slope surface. This method was applied to the southern wall of the 6th Golbini Jajarm bauxite mine. The mine is the largest bauxite deposit in Iran, located to the northeast of the town of Jajarm in the Khorasan province. Estimated reserve of bauxite in this deposit is about 160 million tonnes. Field and laboratory investigations were conducted in order to determine rock mass behaviour. A genetic algorithm code that uses the Simplified Bishop method as an objective function was developed for findingt he safety factor of circular slip surfaces. Sensitivity analysis was applied to determine the optimum values of the genetic algorithm variables, such as population size, selection method, crossover and mutation rates. After finding the critical circular slip surface, slope modification is carried out by removing unstable sections from marked critical slip surfaces, and this process is repeated until the last unsafe section is removed. Based on this code, modification occurred during 7 steps, by reaching a safety factor of 1.3 in the last step. Finally, the modified slope angle of the southern wall of the 6th Golbini Jajarm bauxite mine was determined to be 48.44 degrees. RÉSUMÉ La conception des fosses ainsi que l'évaluation des ressources géologiques et des réserves minières sont désormais réalisées entièrement à l'aide d'outils informatiques spécialisés. Cependant, plusieurs analyses, pourtant essentielles à l'évaluation de la viabilité du projet, sont réalisées en parallèle sans véritable optimisation ni synergie avec l'ensemble des données disponibles. Cet article présente deux approches permettant d'intégrer certains types d'analyses aux modèles de blocs miniers. Ces approches permettent de quantifier la broyabilité du massif rocheux ainsi que d'étudier la stabilité des pentes minières à même les outils d'optimisation et de planification minières. Cette méthode permet dès l'étude de faisabilité d'un projet minier de maximiser les données disponibles, menant ainsi à une approche plus intégrée en conception minière. De plus, ces approches sont flexibles et permettent d'évaluer rapidement plusieurs scénarios, tout en laissant la possibilité de bonifier le modèle et de revoir la conception tout au long du projet minier.

TWO days of solid discussion, with barely time out for meals, characterized the Tulsa meeting of the Petroleum Division. It was preeminently an earnest gathering devoted to technical matters. Sessions were held in the Crystal room of the Mayo Hotel with luncheon served each day in the back of the same room so that talk of methods, while slightly less formal, extended right through the lunch hour. Thursday evening the Committee did provide a little relaxation in an informal dinner at the Tulsa Club where, after a brief musical program and an amusing skit by the local Herman the Great, brief addresses in non-technical vein were made by President Farish and Vice-president Rice of the Humble Company, Henry L. Doherty of Cities Service, Secretary. Bain of the Institute, and others. The presence of leading executives of a number of the oil companies at the dinner and the sessions, and the cordial approval they expressed of the work of the Division were especially gratifying. The total registration was 215 with 100 at the dinner and 70-to 80 lunching together each day.

Cathode stripping machine technology has been developed significantly both in electrorefining (ER) and electrowinning (EW) applications in the last ten years. The main driver has been robotic cathode handling, which has enabled increased flexibility to meet different layout and material handling requirements for both ER and EW processes. Additionally, cathode stripping stations have been continuously developed to optimize speed and to reduce mechanical stress of permanent cathodes. 'taco' type cathodes have been proven as beneficial approach for high capacity operations (particularly in Cu ER), where over 600 cathodes per hour continuous throughput has been achieved. However, the latest developments also apply to split type cathode stripping. Besides material handling, the modern cathode stripping machine has also an important role to provide information for production and quality monitoring. This paper describes the latest developments from the field of copper cathode stripping based on several different projects implemented in the recent years. INTRODUCTION After introduction of the permanent cathode technology in the late 1970s, it became the prevailing technology in copper refineries over the traditional starting sheet process by the end of 1980s. The main driver was less labour-intensive production due to fewer processing steps required along with more automated electrode handling equipment (cathode stripping machine, anode preparation machine, anode scrap washing machine and tankhouse cranes). Since then the design of the cathode stripping machine has followed the development of permanent cathode technology. The main development steps so far can be summarized as follows: Full Deposit Stripping Machine (FDSM) based on waxed permanent cathodes or cathodes with bottom edge strips resulting in split cathodes (copper sheets separated, see Figure 1) Wax less cathode stripping based on V-groove on bottom of the edge strip resulting in either ‘taco’ cathodes (enveloped copper sheets, see Figure 1) or split cathodes Full Deposit Robotic Stripping Machines (FDRSM) using 1–5 robots for permanent cathode handling and cathode stacking.

This paper gives a brief summary of the process of manufacture of sterling silver, and some of its more important physical properties, as observed in conlmercial production of rolled sheet and wire. Although papers have been published by Turner and Smith,1 Rose,2 Sperry3 and Jordaq4 there are few technical data available, and unfortunately the time allowed for the preparation of this paper has not been sufficient to make it as comprehensive as the title might indicate. Analysis of Steeling Silver Fine or pure silver is too soft for coinage and the manufacture of articles in which strength and resistance to wear are desired. From the earliest times of which we have record, copper has been the metal generally used to harden silver. Analyses of coins and silver articles from ancient tombs show varying amounts of copper, and old Roman silver objects in the British Museum have approximately the same ana,lysis as our sterling. The first authentic record of the establishment of a standard alloy is during the reign of Henry I1 in England. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the people in the Eastern Provinces of Germany had a reputation for the standard and purity of their silver coinage, and it is said that Henry II employed some of these Easterlings, as they were called, to improve and standardize the English coinage, which had become debased. The value of raw nonfuel mineral materials production totaled an estimated $19.7 billion in 1978. The record 1978 value exceeded by 13 percent the 1977 value of $17.5 billion. This raw mineral output was the basis for approximately $200 billion worth of processed materials of mineral origin. Output of both metals and nonmetals increased about $1 billion each, above comparable figures for 1977. Of the 22 metals produced quantitative output of 11 increased and the value of 13 increased. Among the 48 nonmetallic commodities produced, the quantities for 35 increased, and the values for 40 increased.
