The Earth?s population is approaching 6.6 billion people. More than half live in urban areas. And, as those figures continue to grow, the need to make wise use of the world?s natural resources as well as its living space will also grow. Thus, the concept of sustainable development ? meeting the needs of the current generation while preserving resources for future generations. The use of underground space is only one part of the sustainable development concept. But it is an important one. Tunnels and underground space are environmentally friendly and contribute significantly to sustainable development. But it takes years to plan and build tunnels and other underground infrastructure. And the demand for infrastructure in the world?s mega cities has grown significantly. In December, about 100 people representing several developed and developing nations spent a day at the United Nations (UN) in New York City discussing the future of underground space development throughout the world. The meeting was put on by the UN?s Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA). The conference was titled ?The Use of Underground Space as an Unexpected Solution for Promoting Sustainable Development.? Its aim was to promote practical solutions to the use of underground space and tunnels as feasible alternatives to promote sustainable development throughout the world. A panel of speakers from government, academia, the UN and the ITA stressed that development is not sustainable without infrastructure. And, as the world?s population grows, there is now an urgent requirement to efficiently plan for the use of underground space to preserve it for the future benefit of mankind. The benefits of the use of underground space are many, they said. Among them: ? Tunnels channel clean water in and waste water out. This promotes health and sustainability worldwide, particularly in developing countries. ? The use of tunnels and underground space helps conserve energy and increases its efficient use ? the use of tunnels cuts commuting time and so saves energy. ? Tunnels, microtunnels and other underground structures promote the more efficient use of space in large cities ? the bulk storage of water, fuel and other goods. ? Underground structures are subject to less stress than surface structures, making them safe havens for natural and man-made hazards, including earthquakes. And, because underground structures are more durable, lifecycle costs are less than surface structures. ? Underground structures promote the multiple use of available land. Land owner-ship at several layers increases land use and provides more usable space. Han Admiraal is director of the Center for Underground Construction in the Netherlands. He said that urban planners need a new vision concerning the use of underground space. Going underground protects historical and archaeological surface facilities, he said. Underground space use can also protect populations located in adverse climates. And sensitive environmental areas on the surface can also be protected from development. In addition to the transportation of people, freight and water, underground development can also store water, as well as provide storage for waste, hazardous materials, carbon dioxide and geothermal energy. The upshot of this new awareness and vision for under-ground space is that its use should be considered before surface development, Admiraal said. And planners and developers are placing more emphasis on underground space development as part of their overall development plans for urban areas. That was not always the case, he said. In the past, underground space was not considered until after the surface space had run out, he said.

Shaft 26B of New York City’s Third Water Tunnel was constructed by Frontier-Kemper Constructors, Inc. of Evansville, Indiana. The 176.8 m (580 ft) deep shaft will serve as the construction shaft for the Manhattan spur of Water Tunnel No. 3. Twelve m (40 ft) of over-burden was supported by a rectangular cofferdam. This shaft was excavated in 13 months, through 164.6 m (540 ft) of rock, using 24,040 kg (26.5 tons) of explosives. Concrete lining cycles included the installation of stainless steel pipes embedded in the lining as the shaft advanced. A total of 635 m (2,084 linear feet) of stainless steel pipe was installed.

Coal mine ground control is the science of the application of rock mechanics principles to coal mining operations. More acceptance of ground control techniques by the US coal mining industry has been seen in the 1980s. It has been demonstrated many times that a proper ground control design is key to a successful coal mining operation. However, numerous in-mine applications of various ground control techniques by the author indicate that cur¬rent techniques need improvement. The biggest problem in coal mine ground control is that miners are dealing with materials of rapidly varying properties and occurrence. And only the exposed surface can be identified positively. Thus, in attempting to solve the ground control problems, many unknown factors are assumed. Some of these problems deriving from such assumptions are discussed here. Coal pillars There are two types of coal pillars - barrier and chain pillars - depending on the purpose. Barrier pillars are those located between panels or sections or mines. Their objective is to isolate the mined-out effects of one from the other. Chain pillars are characteristic of room-and-pillar mining. They are designed to support the overburden load and protect the surrounding entries and crosscuts. Pillar design is the most popular and, frequently, the only ground control technique employed by coal operators for mine design. There are many pillar design formulae available (Bieniawski, 1983; Peng, 1986). Nearly all consider both size and width/height effects. Specifically, pillar strength decreases with increases in pillar size and increases with increase in the ratio of width to height. However, the manner of those changes varies with investigators. Consequently, the pillar size determined varies considerably from investigator to investigator. And the variation grows much more pronounced as the seam depth increases (Fig. 1). The question, then, is which one should be used? One may say each formula is developed for a particular coalfield. A particular formula may have been used to design a pillar, which has not failed. Does that mean it was over designed? Not necessarily, because no one can confirm its stated "safety factor." Recent case studies (Peng, 1986; Tang and Peng, 1988) show that all pillar formulae are too conservative for chain pillar design in room-and-pillar mines due to the following two problems: • Uncertainty about in situ pillar strength. All formulae employ uniaxial compressive strength of selected samples tested in the laboratory and scaled to that for underground pillars. The scaling factors are not well proven. In situ testings by Bieniawski (1969) suggested that 1.5 m (5 ft) pillars are representative of in situ pillars that, after being tested in various US coal mines, are not universally applicable. • Uncertainty about the actual loading on the pillar. The most frequently used tributary loading theory defines the loading as total overburden weight tributary to each pillar (from roofline to surface). This is too conservative when it applies to coal measure rocks. The overburden consists of layered strata of different stiffness. Many stiffer strata will self-support over small roof spans. Depending on the location of these strata above the coal seam, it will reduce pillar loading in various proportions. It follows that total structural analysis using, for instance, finite element method is more appropriate. It can take into account the interaction of roof and floor strata with coal. INTRODUCTION From its beginnings in the first decade of this century, flotation has gradually moved to a predominant role in mineral separation. There are several reasons for this, the continuing trend toward treat¬ment of lower-grade and more finely disseminated ores being the major one. Not only has this been true for sulfide ores to which the process was first applied commercially, but also for most nonsulfide ores as well. A second factor has been the broad applicability of the process with respect to particle size; it is effective from 8 to 10 mesh to below 10m. Finally, more so than for any other separation process, flotation has almost no limitations in separating minerals. Gravity, magnetic, or electrostatic processes are either applicable to particular minerals, or to a restricted number of mineral combinations. Flotation, on the other hand, can utilize the wide range of surface chemical differences among minerals, and an equally wide range of reagents. The recent availability of selective flocculation capabilities on a commercial scale as an adjunct to flotation should remove one of the limitations to the process in the very fine particle range. History Although flotation was anticipated in a 19th century patent to Haynes, its first significant industrial uses were in the early 20th century in Australia. According to Hoover,' the Pottter-Del-prat pro¬cess had a "measure of success" at Broken Hill's Block 14 mine in 1905-1906, and was definitely successful at the BHP Mine, where it produced 80,000 tpy of zinc concentrates. Both the Mineral Separa¬tion and the Elmore processes had early trials in Australia also, with both successes and failures. The first application in the United States was in 1911, when the Hyde process was used by the Butte and Superior Copper Co. on a zinc ore in Montana. By 1916 Hoover could list 46 applications to copper, lead, and zinc ores, mainly in the United States. Ten years later Taggart2 listed almost a thousand patents covering processes and reagents which with few exceptions laid the foundations for modern practice. Included were: sulfidizing of oxides; leach-precip¬itation-flotation; cyanides, sulfites, sulfides, and oxidants for selective depression of sulfides; starch, tannin, and glue as depressants; and xanthates, dithiophosphates, and oleic acid as collectors. Within an¬other 20 years, all of these were in commercial use along with amines for floating silica from phosphates, and synthetic frothers were com¬peting with pine oil and cresylic acid. Introduction The Cannon mine at Wenatchee, WA has recently been brought into operation to recover gold from the sandstones of the Swauk formation. The mine is a joint venture between Asamera Minerals (US) Inc. and Breakwater Resources. A tailings impoundment was constructed to impound 2.7 to 3.6 Mt (3 to 4 million st) of tailings at 1.8 kt/a (2000 stpd) over about five years. This paper describes the design and construction of the impoundment. In particular, it describes the 100 m (300 ft) high earthfill embankment that is the main feature of the facility. Project environment The project is located on the outskirts of Wenatchee, a town of about 40,000 people. The town is situated on the flat alluvial terraces beside the Columbia River. The Cascade Mountains rise from the terraces in a series of ridges and valleys. The mine is at the foot of the Cascades. The tailings impoundment is in one of the steep valleys. The climate is mild and dry (Table 1). Site selection Twelve alternative sites within a 16-km (10-mile) radius of the mine were examined. Decision making theory was used to select the most suitable site. Advantages of the chosen site include its proximity to the mine and its low visibility from points of common public access. Also, the area was already heavily impacted by an existing silica quarry. The major disadvantage of the site is the need to pump tailings over a distance of 1.5 km (1 mile) and against a static head of 200 m (655 ft). Also, it is located in a gulch just upstream from the town of Wenatchee. Site geology The impoundment is generally underlain by interbedded sandstones and siltstones. The siltstones are often shattered. The sandstones are often friable. Both rock types are extensively jointed. Some isolated faulting of the sediments occurred before the area was covered with basalt flows. About 10,000 years ago, at the end of the ice age, the basalts were covered by 3 to 10 m (10 to 33 ft) of wind blown loess - a fine sandy clay and silt. River deposits filled the base of the valley to depths between 5 and 25 m (16 and 82 ft). Under the main part of the embankment, these materials were removed to expose bedrock. Ground water flow is generally through the more permeable layers. The permanent water table is about 5 m (16 ft) beneath the ground surface. Installation of a horizontal air blocking shelf around the inside perimeter of the surface mining drill deck shroud is proposed to improve dust capture. Without the use of this shelf, a strong coanda effect airflow pattern results in dust leakage to the environment, especially at the shroud-to-ground interface. Bailing air exits the drill hole and travels along the drill steel to the underside of the table, where it fans out across the bottom of the drill table and continues down the sides of the shroud. This dust-laden bailing air then strikes the ground and fans out under gaps between the shroud and the ground. The proposed shelf prevents dust-laden air from striking the ground by redirecting it toward the center of the enclosure, where it can be captured. Laboratory tests demonstrated that the shelf reduced dust levels outside of the shroud by 81% under operating conditions consisting of a 1.9:1 collector to bailing airflow ratio, and a 5.1-cm (2-in) gap between the shroud and ground. The shelf was 15.2-cm (6-in) wide and located at a height equal to 2/3 the distance measured from the bottom of the shroud to the bottom of the drill table. The air blocking shelf was also capable of overcoming the adverse impact of vertical leakage along the shroud seams as long as this leakage was confined to an area below the horizontal plane defined by the shelf location.

To reduce fire hazards from spontaneous combustion of coal in longwall gob areas, a series of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to model the spontaneous heating of coal in longwall gob areas. The previous modeling results demonstrate that spontaneous heating of coal usually occurred behind the longwall shields and along the face with a bleeder ventilation system. Assuming a stationary longwall face, the spontaneous heating could turn to a spontaneous fire in several days for the most reactive coal under favorable conditions. When the longwall face advances, the spontaneous heating process will be significantly affected. In this study, the effect of longwall face advance on the spontaneous heating in the gob area is investigated using the CFD model developed in previous studies. One longwall panel with a bleeder ventilation system is simulated. The width of the panel is 300 m (984 ft), while the length of the panel is changed between 1,000 to 2,000 m (3,280 to 6,560 ft). The same permeability and porosity profiles are used for gobs with different lengths. The spontaneous heating first develops in the gob when the longwall face is stationary. Then, the face advances at a certain rate. The face advance is simulated as a series of discrete movements, and the effect of the face advance on the maximum temperature developed during the face stoppage is examined.

Talc is a layered, hydrous magnesium silicate mineral. It has a soft, soapy feel and typically a smooth texture. Talc is also known for its insulation, heat resistance, chemical stability, oil absorption and strong covering quality. Talc, Mg3Si4O10 (OH)2, has a theoretical chemical composition of MgO at 31.7 percent, SiO2 at 63.5 percent, and H2O at 4.8 percent. However, talc’s chemical and mineralogical composition can vary depending on its geological history/parent rock association. These mineral associations and variable levels are usually chlorite and carbonates (magnesite, calcite and dolomite). Two key elemental substitutions that can occur in the talc crystal structure are iron for magnesium and fluorine for hydroxyl. These compositional differences may limit or enhance the talc’s usage in specific market niches. The United States remains self-sufficient in most grades of talc.

The aggregates industry is the largest minerals industry in the United States producing over 2.6 billion metric tons of crushed stone, sand and gravel annually. Approximately 5% of that production is fine material, passing a 75-micron mesh sieve. Of that amount, about 77% is not sold and represents one of the major industry issues. The material accumulates in stockpiles and settling ponds having an operational and economic impact on the site’s bottom line. Many factors cause this material to be produced: from blasting and processing techniques all the way to end use specifications.

The U.S. cement industry, including Puerto Rico, again set a record in terms of production and shipments. The increase in shipments came primarily from imports of portland cement as domestic production from produced and imported clinker gained only 1.9 Mt (2.1 million st). Clinker production as reported to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) was 88.6 Mt (97.6 million st), an increase of 1 percent. Gray and white portland cement production from domestic and imported clinker, estimated at 93.5 Mt (103 million st), was up 1.9 Mt (2.1 million st). Masonry cement shipments of 5.5 Mt (6 million st), which equates closely to production, was up 6.3 percent. Blended ce-ment shipments were up 35.9 percent from 2004 at 2.35 Mt (2.6 million st).

"This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2014 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature and specialists in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry.Three types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. current dollars provided by SNL Metals & Mining (SNL) of Charlottesville, VA; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2014 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events that affected exploration activities including economic, social and political conditions, which were derived from published sources and discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources are used to develop these compilations, statistics may differ depending on the source and type of data that are being reported.The SNL data summarize planned company budgets for worldwide exploration activities in 2014 for 19 nonfuel mineral commodities based on company surveys. Research focused on precious metals (gold, platinum-group metals and silver), base metals (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (iron ore, phosphate and potash), and specialty mineral commodities (diamond, lithium, niobium, rare-earth elements, tantalum and uranium). Information on uranium exploration activities was included for the first time in 2007. Data on lithium, niobium, phosphate, potash, rare-earth elements and tantalum were compiled for the first time in 2010 because of their increased significance. Since 1999, companies with exploration budgets of $100,000 and greater were included in the SNL compilations. SNL budget estimates exclude bauxite, coal and oil and gas. Exploration budget estimates for iron ore have been compiled since 2011 but reported separately. The 2014 SNL company survey is reported by SNL to cover an estimated 95 percent of the world’s nonferrous, nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 5 percent that is not covered includes companies that chose not to participate in the SNL survey, private companies that do not publish their budget data, and government-funded exploration activities"

Value added is a loosely used qualifier in the industrial minerals industry. What exactly does it mean? What does it take to make a value-added product? More importantly, how does a company maintain the value added to its products? Most people agree that value-added means the value of a mineral minus the cost to produce it. This is misleading, though, because producing value-added products does not necessarily guarantee the profitability of the products. In some cases, firms that make value-added products are not very profitable. It is important not only to understand how to make a value-added product but also how competitive forces in the market can erode the value added. Therefore, when looking at value-added opportunities, producers must understand how to obtain the value added and how to maintain that value. Four major factors limit a company's ability to add value to its products. This paper examines these factors. It uses the ground calcium carbonate and mica industries as examples.

Smooth roll crushers are widely used as secondary crushers, operating most effectively when set for size reductions in a ratio between 3 or 4 to I. The feed supplied to these units varies from 13 to 102 mm in size and the product obtained ranges from 13 mm to about 20 mesh. Smooth roll crushers produce very few fines and absolutely no oversize. Introduction The South African Witwatersrand is the world's largest gold-bearing province and gold producing district. But the production capacity of the very big mines (Vaal Reef, Driefontein Cons., Western Holdings, Western Deep Levels, and others) is not as large as that of the Soviet Union's Muruntau gold mine. The Muruntau gold-bearing ore body was discovered in 1956-57, and has been in operation since that time. In the early 1970s, this mine produced 70 to 80 t/a (2.3 to 2.6 million oz per year) of gold. Within the last few years it has become the world's largest producing gold mine. Russian authors do not publish ore reserve or rate of production data. But it is very likely that the Muruntau mining complex, which involves several ore bodies, is currently producing about 143 t/a (4.6 million oz per year) of gold. In the Florida phosphate industry, fatty acid collectors are used to separate phosphate ore from silica during the rougher flotation stage. However, the presence of multivalent ions (in particular Ca++) in the processing water has been reported to result in the activation of silica with respect to oleate adsorption, rendering it floatable. Hence, adequate separation may not be achieved during the rougher flotation stage. In this study, the direct measurement of surface inter-action forces via atomic force microscopy was used to delineate possible mechanisms for calcium activation under phosphate flotation conditions at oleate/calcium concentrations both above and below the calcium dioleate precipitation limit.

The objective of this research was to establish the relationship between production, consumption and energy cost in the surface mining of bituminous coal. Specific energy sources such as diesel, gasoline, electricity, explosives and bituminous coal were considered in this study. Gain in net energy, proportion of the cost of energy consumption and total energy cost relative to total revenue of extracted coal were determined, and a new energy efficiency index and a new energy-cost ratio were established. A case study on an operating surface coal mine was carried out to demonstrate the application of the newly developed method. The results of this study can be used by the mine operators in establishing strategies for the optimization of energy production and consumption, and for reducing the cost of bituminous coal extraction.

The US Bureau of Mines and the Santa Cruz Joint Venture (SCJV) are working on a production-scale, in situ copper recovery project in Arizona. The research is being conducted at the Santa Cruz site, located 11.2 km (7 miles) west of Casa Grande, AZ (Fig. 1). Santa Cruz is a 1.36-Gt (1.5 billion st) porphyry deposit averaging 0.6% Cu, of which 65% is oxidized, concealed beneath post-mineral alluvium at depths of 365-914 m (1500-3000 ft). The Bureau and the SCJV will evaluate in situ mining as a method for extracting copper from this previously unmined deposit. Research objectives of the Santa Cruz project are: - to demonstrate that an in situ research test can be operated in an environmentally acceptable manner ; and * to operate an in situ well pattern long enough to develop information on copper recovery and economic feasibility data. In situ mining of copper from undisturbed deposits has not been attempted commercially. There are several potential advantages with in situ mining: less exposure of miners to hazards, lower pital costs for the mine and plant and lower operating costs. In addition, there are no pits, dumps or tailings, which means less environmental impact.

The equations of heat conduction are numerically solved for two kinds of artificial freezing- mechanical freezing and liquid nitrogen freezing. A two dimensional finite difference model simulating the freezing field is developed. The procedure introduces a way to simulate the effect of latent heat released when water transforms from liquid to solid. The procedure also produces a way to calculate the harmonic mean of heat conductivity used when dealing with heterogeneous material. The theoretically derived temperature distributions in frozen soil are given and compared with measured data. An analysis is made on the thermal design in shaft freezing. The average temperature of frozen soil is calculated by using numerical integration. The regularity of development of frozen soil radius is revealed and given in an appropriate mathematical model.

Ion exchangers can be naturally occurring or synthetic; the majority of ion exchange materials in use today are synthetic resins based upon organic polymers such as polystyrene or methacrylate. Into more modern times the use of ion exchange for metal recovery was first proposed for the recovery of gold using zeolites in 1909.4 In 1939 copper was being recovered from the manufacturing of Rayon using ion exchange5 a development that continued applicability through to current times in the production/recovery of copper and nickel in ammoniacal leach processes. In early 1949 researchers at the Rohm & Haas Company discovered that hexavalent uranium existed as an ionic complex in sulfuric acid leach liquors, and that quaternary ammonium anion exchange resins exhibited a high selectivity for this ionic species6 The first commercial application of this technology went on-stream in October 1952 at the West Rand Consolidated Mines, Ltd operation in South Africa. 7 Ion Exchange has been applied for the recovery and purification of a range of metals;8 ? Heightened environmental consciousness has resulted in the development of various international accords dealing with natural resource management. This international awareness is now being translated into regional and local initiatives that proactively implement collaborative environmental management programs. One such program was recently initiated in northern Chile in recognition of the interconnection of Andean salars. Cooperative efforts between industry, governmental agencies and academic professionals have resulted in the implementation of simultaneous environmental monitoring of flora and fauna in the salars of northern Chile. This coordinated effort is leading to an improved understanding of the migratory patterns of South American fauna, as well as improved access to an expanded database for the multiple user groups associated with the Andean salars. The El Abra Mine is actively participating in these coordinated monitoring efforts.
