TiB2 and CeO2 particle-reinforced Al6061 hybrid composites were manufactured using stir casting and hot rolling techniques. The base alloy and composites were hot-rolled at 500ºC and a 50% reduction was achieved through 12 passes. The effect of varying TiB2 and CeO2 particle additions on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the Al6061 matrix was studied. Scanning electron microscopy showed uniform dispersion of both the reinforcements, with good interfacial bonding. Microhardness and tensile properties like yield and tensile strength were found to be higher for hybrid composite with 2.5% TiB2 and 2.5% CeO2 compared to Al6061 alloy and other hybrid composites. The increased tensile strength is attributed to good dispersion and interfacial bonding between the particles and Al6061 matrix. Fracture analysis using a scanning electron microscope revealed ductile fracture for the Al6061 alloy and mixed characteristics of ductile-brittle fracture for hybrid composites

Globally, the demand for mineral products is ever increasing. Extraction of these mineral resources results in the continuous production of a huge volume of waste material, including tailing dumps. The mass of tailings usually exceeds the actual resource and often contains hazardous contaminants. This study investigated the effects of tailings disposal on soil, water, and air quality in the Nampundwe area. Water, soil, and dust samples were collected from different locations in the surrounding communities. The constituents analysed in the samples included copper, cobalt, iron, sulfate, and silica. According to the results obtained, some seepages occurred from the tailings impoundment to the shallow aquifer in the area. However, the general water quality meets the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) statutory limits. Recorded concentrations of sulfate (1500 mg/l), copper (1.5 mg/l), cobalt (1.0 mg/l), iron (2.0 mg/l), and silica were between 0.003 mg/l and 705 mg/l, which is far below ZEMA’s statutory limit. Silica concentration was also evident in the air. The highest concentration recorded was 260 ppcc (particle per cubic centimeter) recorded in July 2019 from the northern direction of the tailings dam. The concentration was below the statutory limit of 350 ppcc. The topsoil from the northern part of the tailings recorded a silica dust concentration of 39.9 ppcc. Iron was evident in the underground soil with a concentration of 8.01 ppcc, cobalt 0.005 ppcc, copper 0.051 ppcc, while sulfate was recorded as 0.41 ppcc.

J. van Rensburg. Ten Council meetings were held during the year with an average attendance of eighteen. FINANCE The annual accounts, which are attached to this report, show an excess of expenditure over income of R2,124, compared with an excess of income over expenditure of R4,218 last year. There are a number of reasons for this substantial change. There was a loss on realization of investments compared with a substantial surplus in recent years. The publication of the Journal once again resulted in a large loss in spite of a generous subvention of R2,000 from the Department of Cultural Affairs and other assistance amounting to R750. The revenue from sales of publications was down considerably. This is a figure which fluctuates considerably from year to year. The secretarial fee was considerably higher than previously. Due to pressure of work it was necessary for the Secretary to relinquish his duties with the Institute of Land Surveyors and, therefore, for this Institute to assume the additional staff costs involved. Finally there was unusual expenditure on the 75th Anniversary celebrations. There was a pleasing increase in revenue from subscriptions, due to the steadily increasing membership, but this was quite inadequate to cover the substantial increases in expenditure and losses in revenue mentioned above. The changes that have been effected in the arrangements for the publication of the Journal have been mentioned elsewhere in this report. It is expected that these will bring about substantial financial benefits in the long term. The MacArthur Forrest Memorial Fund shows an excess of income over expenditure of Rl00 and the total fund was therefore increased by this amount to R4,206. The balance sheet indicates that the market value of quoted shares and debentures increased during the year from R8,755 to R13,059, while the Accumulated Funds now amount to R22,567 as against R24,691 last year. MEMBERSHIP Fifty-six Members, fifty-five Associate Members, thirteen Graduates, twenty-two Affiliates and twenty- nine Students were elected during the year. Twelve Members were admitted to Life Membership; seven Associate Members were transferred to the grade of Member; four Graduates and two Students were transferred to the grade of Associate Member; five Students were transferred to the grade of Graduate; three Affiliates were transferred to the grade of Member; five Affiliates were transferred to the grade of Associate Member. Three Members, seven Associate Members, two Graduates, two Affiliates and six Students were removed from the Membership Roll in terms of By-Law 7.7.1. In making this change it will conform to more general practice today in regard to publications and this should effect certain economies and facilitate selling of advertising space. It has been arranged that in future the publication of the Journal, including advertisement sales, will be handled by Kelvin Publications (Pty.) Ltd. who are already doing this work satisfactorily for the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Institutes. In making these changes the opportunity was taken of redesigning the outer cover of the Journal to incorporate the new coat of arms. The Presidential Address by Mr R. C. J. The metallurgical response of a difficult to treat coal and an easy to treat coal orebody were investigated in terms of the coal yield and the coal quality in a basic coal recovery flowsheet. The purpose of this paper is to show trends and derive principles for the treatment of different coal types. This investigation entailed using the LIMN simulator to simulate the metallurgical response by varying the plant operational parameters. The controllable plant variables investigated were: ?Cyclone size ?Screen and hydro-cyclone cut points ?Medium cut density ?Feed particle size distribution.

The Annual General Meeting of the Institute was held in Kelvin House, Johannesburg, on Wednesday, 30th August, 1972. Professor D. D. Howat (President) was in the chair. There were also present sixty-two Fellows, twenty-four Members, two Associates, three Students and eighteen Visitors, making a total of one hundred and nine. The President declared the meeting open at 4.05 p.m. OBITUARIES The President: It is my sad duty to announce the death of six members of this Institute. The first of these is Dr A. J. Orenstein, Honorary Life Fellow, who joined the Institute in 1916 and died on Seventh July. Dr Orenstein became almost a legendary figure in Medicine as a result of his work in the control and elimination of malaria during the digging of the Panama Canal and I believe he was actually engaged working until four days before his death. The other members who have died are: F. Meyer, died on 8th June; S. D. Loxton, Fellow, died on 13th May; J. Innes, Fellow, died on l0th January, 1970; O. B. Prentis, a Member, died on 4th June, and J. Brits, Associate, died on 27th June. As a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased and in sympathy with the bereaved may I ask you to rise and observe a few moments silence. WELCOME TO VISITORS 'On behalf of the Council, may I say how delighted we are to have such a splendid gathering with us on this our Annual General Meeting. I think not even our oldest members can recall an occasion on which two Ministers of Mines were present at a meeting of the Institute. It is a particular pleasure to welcome them this afternoon. I am happy to say that Minister Koornhof is an Honorary-Vice President of the Institute, and Minister Dillon is an Honorary Member. The presence of your goodselves, gentlemen, with us this afternoon, I am sure underlines the great significance which we believe both countries attach to the economic exploitation of the vast mineral resources of Southern Africa. For over 70 years, this Institute and its members have been making their contribution to this great task of mineral exploitation, and we feel that your presence with us today, is a token of the confidence of your governments in what this Institute and its members have been endeavouring to do. Also present with us today, is Mr R. C. J. Goode, President of the Chamber of Mines, and Honorary President of this Institute. I was going to say I welcome Mr Goode, but it is rather difficult to welcome a man to his own home, and this is the case with Mr Goode. He is a very distinguished and a very recent past president of this Institute and he remains now, as he has been for as long as I can remember, one of our most active and valuable members. This I think, ladies and gentlemen, is the second rather unique feature of this occasion this afternoon, because no one else can recollect an occasion on which the President of the Chamber of Mines was also a past president and an active member of our Institute. A special word of welcome, Mr Goode. Mr Tommy Gibbs, our Government Mining Engineer, is in a somewhat similar position as he is also a member and an old and valued friend of our Institute, - welcome to you, Mr Gibbs. Mention I think, must be made of the fact that we are very glad to have with us Dr A. J. A. Roux, President of the Atomic Energy Board, and Mr Stanley Craib, President of the Associated Scientific and Technical Societies. Then, within the great family of the A.S. and T.S., we have the presidents, or the vice-presidents of I believe 13 of the constituent societies. "In order to be able to map the variation in the concentration of elements in soils, it is necessary to sample at intervals that will give adequate coverage of the area and will allow determination of the rate of fluctuation of concentration with distance in any environment. This rate of fluctuation with distance can be referred to as the continuity of concentration.The continuity of concentration in soils varies according to the chemical characteristics of the element being considered, the underlying rock type or orebody and in response to the dispersion processes that operated during soil formation. Within any environment there is a maximum distance between sampling points within which adjacent sample values are related. This distance, the critical sampling interval, can be determined by means of a correlograrm.Where the sampling grid has been chosen to provide an adequate coverage over unmineralized rock, adjacent samples being related, anomalies may be missed if the element continuity in the anomaly is less than in the background. Results show that a knowledge of the critical sampling interval of the environment being examined may used to select a more efficient sampling pattern for a geochemical survey."

A critical comparison of specific cooling power and the wet kata thermometer in hot mining environments By J. de V. Lambreehts. D.Sc. (Eng.) (Rand) A new formula for the wet kata thermometer has been established in place of the currently used one which is believed to be fundamentally wrong and the new formula is compared with the recently proposed specific cooling power concept. Apart from a constant multiplier, it is concluded that the difference between. the two concepts lies solely in the value of 'n' in the function vn and that this value for the cooling power of air on the sweating human body remains to be established reliably. The kata thermometer might yet be found to be a reliable predictor of heat stress in hot environments.

The advantages to be gained from the use of a high-density ion-exchange resin in a uranium recovery circuit are shown. It is concluded that, in existing fluidized-bed plants, the throughput of solution can be increased by up to 40 per cent at the same uranium recovery. Alternatively, the values in the barren solution can be improved at the same flow-rate of solution.

At the De Beers Consolidates Mines operations it is common practices to perform Geotechnical mapping of the newly exposed faces in the waste and ore rock. The purpose of Geotechnical mapping is to quantify the in-situ fracturing of a rockmass that in turn is required during the planning and application of a mining method. Whether it is to determine slope angles, caveability, impact of blasting or support requirements. This mapping involved a cumbersome and time consuming procedure that requires individual examination and description of the natural inherent fractures exposed by mining. During highwall mapping in an open pit this can be a safety concern due to the duration of time spent below a highwall. The advantages gained through the recent introduction and application of SiroVision® allows safer mapping, an increase in statistical fracture population, archiving of rock faces and the more accurate reflection of the true mapping. This paper aims to describe in detail the application of the recently developed SiroVision®, photogrammetry software, to replace conventional face mapping. Le but de la cartographie géotechnique est de quantifier la fracturation in-situ d’une masse rocheuse, qui sera nécessaire lors de la planification et application d’une méthode minière, que ce soit pour déterminer les angles des galeries inclinées, les possibilités de foudroyage, l’impact du dynamitage, ou les besoins en supports. Cette cartographie nécessitait une procédure longue et compliquée qui demande l’examen individuel et la description des fractures naturelles propres exposées par l’opération de mine. Pendant la cartographie de parois dans une exploitation à ciel ouvert, cette opération peut être dangereuse à cause du temps passé sous la paroi. Zweck dieser geotechnischen Aufzeichnungen ist die vor-Ort-Quantifizierung des Bruches der Gesteinsmasse, welche im Gegenzug während der Planung und der Anwendung einer Abbaumethode erforderlich ist, sei es um einen Neigungswinkel festzustellen, Abbaubarkeit, Auswirkung von Sprengungen oder Anforderungen an Unterstützungen. Die Aufzeichnungen waren mit umständlichen und zeitaufwendigen Prozeduren verbunden, die eine individuelle Prüfung und Beschreibung der durch den Abbau freigelegten natürlichen inhärenten Brüche, verlangten. Dies kann auf Grund des Zeitraumes der unterhalb einer Flözoberschicht verbringt wird zu einer Frage der Sicherheit werden wenn die Aufzeichnung einer Flözoberschicht im Tagbau erfolgt. Die Vorteile auf Grund der jüngst erfolgten Einführung und Anwendung der SiroVision® gestatten sichereres Aufzeichen, eine Zunahme in der statistischen Menge an Gesteinsbrüchen und eine akkuratere Reflektion der tatsächlichen Aufzeichnungen. Diese Arbeit hat zum Ziel im Detail die Anwendung der kürzlich entwickelten SiroVision®, eine photogrammetrische Software, die die konventionelle Abbauortaufzeichnung ersetzen soll zu beschreiben.

The theme of this Colloquium, survival strategies, not only conveys a sense of urgency but also takes cognizance of the fact that, as in the political arena, tough decisions have to be made and acted upon in the years to come. It is therefore appropriate that the SAIMM, as spokesman for the metallurgical industry, should be dealing with these issues at this time, and I wish to commend the organizers of this Colloquium for focusing on a mater as important as the future of this great industry. In view of this, I regard it as an honour and privilege to officiate on this occasion, where the best of South Africa's brain power in the metallurgical field will be harnessed with a view to moulding strategies for survival.

(d) The SAIMM Journal Papers published in the Journal cover al relevant areas of technical interest by striving for a balanced content and maintaining a consistently high technical standard. (e) School and Colloquia Notes The papers from al local schools and colloquia are published and handed out at registration. Should authors wish to have their papers considered for publication in the Journal, they should adhere to the guidelines outlined below.

Reichert cone concentrators are used successfully in many applications, but have as yet not found favour in the gold mining industry on the Witwatersrand, because, for optimum operation, the cones need to have specially designed feed-preparation and circuit details. In addition, good liberation of the valuable minerals is essential. Gravity tests, in which a pilot plant was used on refractory gold ore, showed that 94 per cent of the gold could be extracted after gravity concentration and preferential grinding, roasting, and cyanidation of the concentrate, whereas 96 per cent could be extracted by flotation followed by the same preferential treatment. However, the capital and operating costs for gravity separation are expected to be considerably lower than those for flotation.

The results of trials with three stope-face cleaning systems are described. Two of these systems were based on armoured chain conveyors, and the third on a reciprocating-flight conveyor. The operational elements of each system are discussed with reference to their effectiveness, and many problems are highlighted. It is concluded that the reciprocating-flight conveyor is superior, and has the potential for being developed into a system yielding a labour productivity of more than 30 m2 per worker per month and a face advance of 15 m per month working one shift a day.

The South African coal-mining industry uses a uniform safety-factor formula for non-squat pillars, incorporating a coal-strength constant that was derived empirically by Salamon and Munro in the 1960s. The constant is 7,2 MPa. Since that time, collapses of pillars at relatively high safety factors have occurred in the Vaal Basin. Analysis of the post-1960s' collapses indicated that the strength constant for the Vaal Basin is 4,5 MPa. A crude method for the prediction of the minimum life span of pillars in the Vaal Basin is presented.
