A computer-based, real-time mine management system has been installed in a number of underground operations. The system’s innovative software application is coupled with wireless data acquisition and database management to provide complete mine monitoring and control execution in closed-loop control fashion. The system is well suited to automatically assign equipment, acquire status, and reassign resources based on status; and to automate information handling. The system has provided mines with improved utilization of the equipment fleet and mining crews, and reduced workplace cycle time. This paper describes the deployment of systems at a number of underground mining operations and discusses future development of the system. Raise-boring experiences in the gold mines of the Anglo American Corporation Group by J. W. WILSON and P. C. GRAHAM Published in the Journal, October, 1972. Discussion by F. H. Guise-Brown., B.Sc. (Min. Eng.) (Member) INTRODUCTION Messrs J. W. Wilson and P. C. Graham are to be congratulated on an excellent paper containing several thought-provoking remarks. The concept of allocating a machine and equipment valued initially at some R300 000 on an experimental basis is courageous, and the results obtained could be of interest to the mining industry as a whole. The Gold Fields of S.A. Group approached this problem differently. In pioneering the start of this work in South African gold mines, they considered that expenditure of this magnitude would be warranted only if the proposition was viable right from the start. To this end, a Robbins R41 was purchased expressly to assist in the duplication of part of the No. 1 shaft system of the Doomfontein Gold Mine. Mr M. J. Koortsl has summed up the initial results of this work and given some preliminary costing, but inflation since that period has made these figures somewhat out of date.

"Currently, the matted-based collection process is most widely used for platinum group metal (PGM) recovery. However, because PGM-containing concentrates are becoming more enriched with UG2 (Upper Group 2) low-grade concentrates, this is expected to be integrated or replaced with an alloy collection process.The reduction LG (low-grade) concentrates with silicon carbide (SiC) was investigated. The purpose of the study was to ascertain the feasibility of using SiC as reductant with regard to metal fall, PGM grade in the alloy, slag composition, and overall PGM recovery, and if possible, the integration of such a process in the current matte-based collection process. Rowland and Easterns LG concentrate samples from Lonmin were analysed by Xray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). It was found that SiO2 and MgO are the most abundant oxides and Pd is the most abundant of the PGMs. Sulphide-bearing minerals such as chalcopyrite were detected in low concentrations (below 1%), and Cr2O3 concentrations are between 2-4%. SiC reduction of Rowland and Easterns concentrate were conducted at 1600°C with reductant to concentrate ratios ranging from 2.5 to 3.5 kg SiC per 100 kg concentrate.The reduction experiments revealed that PGM recoveries from Rowland concentrate were poor. SEM images showed entrained metal prills in the slag phase. The slag viscosity at the end of the melt was calculated by using FactSage, and the results indicated that the viscosity was higher than 4 poise, which is above that of Easterns slag. PGM recoveries for Easterns concentrate were significantly better. More than 85% of the Ir and Pd and almost 60% of the Pt were recovered in a test with a reductant to concentrate ratio of 3.5 kg SiC per 100 kg Easterns concentrate. At this reductant to concentrate ratio, Fe recovery was also the highest, at 66%. SEM imaging of a slag sample revealed few or no metal prills entrained. The FeO content in the initial concentrate charge was then increased by adding Peirce-Smith converter slag in order to decrease the slag viscosity and further increase PGM recovery. A test was conducted with the addition of 10 kg converter slag per 100 kg Easterns concentrate. The reductant to concentrate ratio was kept at 3.5 kg SiC per 100 kg Easterns concentrate. The Ir and Pd recoveries were more than 95%, while Pt recovery was almost 70%. Fe recovery increased to 76%. On the basis of these results an optimum feed ratio between Easterns and Rowland concentrates and Peirce-Smith converter slag were calculated. FactSage predicted that the concentrate charge should consist of 70-80% Easterns concentrate with 20-30 kg converter slag per 100 kg LG concentrate. SiC reduction of this optimum LG concentrate charge is expected to recover more than 90% of all PGMs. Cr and Si concentrations in the alloy will be below 1% in total.The effectiveness of SiC as reductant was also compared to carbon reduction. Carbon reduction of an optimum concentrate charge at the same reductant to concentrate ratio resulted in a marginally higher metal fall than SiC reduction. However, gas emissions and energy requirements are higher for carbon reduction.The study has shown that base metals and PGMs can be recovered in an iron alloy by SiC reduction of LG concentrate with converter slag additions. Integration of such a process into the matte-based collection process could be considered as a future alternative for smelting UG2 LG concentrates."

Typical depressants for selective reverse flotation of iron oxides from complex silicates do not generally show high levels of efficiency. Therefore, as a hot topic, there are several ongoing investigations in this area. The main aim of this paper is exploring the potential of using humic acid (HA) as a depressant in reverse cationic flotation of hematite from complex silicates. For such a process, the wettability and flotation behaviour of pure minerals (hematite and silicates) was investigated at pH 10 in the presence of HA and cationic collector. Adsorption mechanism of HA on these minerals was measured by zeta-potential and FTIR. Results of flotation tests showed that at the lower concentrations of HA, selective separation of silicates from hematite is beneficial, where the floatability of amphibole was higher than pyroxene. A higher separation efficiency of hematite through reverse flotation was observed in the presence of amphibole, in comparison with the presence of pyroxene. Wettability studies showed that HA has a significant effect on reducing the hydrophobicity of treated minerals with the collector. The adsorption, ZPC and FTIR test results indicated that HA was adsorbed on both silicates and hematite. However, the absorption intensity onto hematite was much higher than silicates. It was found that the adsorption mechanism of HA on hematite takes place through both strong H-bonding and ligand exchange. The Council for Geoscience (CGS) performed a macroseismic investigation following the occurrence of an earthquake in the Boksburg area on 11 June 2023. The event had a magnitude of ML 4.4 and a focal mechanism that showed the event as having strike-slip motion along a northwest-southeast oriented fault. The event resulted in aftershocks, some of which occurred away from the causative fault in the east in an area without a mapped fault. However, the cluster of past events in that area suggests that there is an active fault. Due to the size of the main earthquake, a macroseismic survey was conducted to determine its impact on the community in the region. Analysis of observed data obtained from questionnaires resulted in the creation of 153 intensity data points. Their distribution showed high intensity values close to the earthquake source area. However, the investigation highlighted a number of anomalies, such as the higher than expected intensity values observed far from the event epicentre. It could be that these anomalies are caused by site conditions, for example, amplification of ground motion due to thick soil layers.

The enhancement of shear flocculation of a galena suspension by ultrasound in the presence of sodium isopropyl xanthate and potassium ethyl xanthate was investigated by studying the effects of surfactant concentration on flocculation efficiency, contact angle, and zeta potential. Strong flocculation was obtained under alkaline conditions (pH > 9) and a high ultrasound power level (150 W). Although the ultrasonic treatment increased the negativity of the zeta potential of the galena particles, this did not decrease the flocculation efficiency, thereby showing that the hydrophobic interactions between the particle were stronger than the electrical double-layer repulsion resulting from xanthate adsorption. The findings indicate that the ultrasonic treatment promoted the adsorption of surfactants onto the mineral surfaces.

Iron ore fines are agglomerated in the sintering process to produce sinter: an important feed material for blast furnaces worldwide. A model of the iron ore sintering process has been developed with the objective of being representative of the sinter pot test, the standard laboratory process in which the behaviour of specific sinter feed mixtures is evaluated. The model aims to predict sinter quality, including chemical quality and physical strength, as well as key sinter process performance parameters such as production rate and fuel consumption rate. The model uses the finite difference method (FDM) to solve heat and mass distributions within the sinter pot over the sinter bed height and time dimensions. This method can further be used for establishing empirical relationships with measured sinter properties. Inputs into the model include the feed material physical properties, chemical compositions, and boundary conditions that vary over time. Sub-models describe relationships between applied pressure differential and gas flow rate through the bed of granulated fine ore particles, combustion of carbonaceous material, calcination of fluxes, evaporation and condensation of water, and melting and solidification. Four sinter pot tests were performed and the model predictions validated against temperatures measured at depths of 100, 230, and 420 mm. Differences between predicted and measured temperatures indicated the need for optimization of some model parameters that are uncertain. Optimization resulted in an improvement in the correlation between the predicted and measured temperatures for all tests, although an acceptable level of agreement was not achieved in all cases. Using these parameter values, reasonable agreement was found in terms of typical performance parameters for three out of the four tests.

The project report is based on vacation work done by the writer at the Khutala Colliery during December/January 2009?2010. The purpose of this report is to explain and describe the design process in a multi-seam mine design for coal extraction at the Khutala Colliery. The multi-seam design will focus on the No. 2 and No. 4 seams as these are the seams that are currently being mined by underground methods at Khutala Colliery. The seam thicknesses and the parting thickness between the seams provide suitable conditions for designing a multi-seam mine design. An investigation into the pillar design aspects is carried out followed by a numerical modelling analysis of various scenarios. This analysis validates the first principles approach provided by multi-seam design guidelines. The design results from the analysis of the selected pillar design indicate sufficient parting for primitive conditions between seams, thus illuminating the need for superimposing in-panel pillars. This multi-seam mine design confirms the potential for the extraction of coal in a new panel. The design indicates that significant amounts of power station coal are present and suitable for extraction by room and pillar mining methods. The panel block indicates 401 625 tonnes of ROM coal. This block has a life of panel that will be mined just over a 4-month period. This 4-month period is assumed to mined at a production rate of 48 000 tonnes per month. Carbonatites are generally competent rock masses with rock mass rating class II rating 60–74. In spite of their competency, they tend to be affected by weak features like manganese-iron veins and/or in situ rock damage due to brecciation associated with carbonatite complexes. Rock slope failure in such hard rocks is complex since such structures within the rock mass form weak links that could potentially control slope instability. In this contribution, a numerical simulation using phase2 v 7.0 was carried out to investigate the influence of in situ rock damage on the stability of mine pit walls. The outcome reveals that, the existence of breccia in the competent rock mass has the capability to reduce the slope stability performance particularly at gentle dipping angles of emplacement in close range to the slope toe. However, as the emplacement position of breccia moves away from the pit wall, the stability performance increases at gentle dipping angle <50º. On the contrary, at the dipping angle of 50° the performance of slope reduced, and at steeper angles >50° the impact becomes negligible. Thus, from a series of analyses, mine design in brecciated rock masses, the ratio of 1:5 between the breccia distance from slope toe and pit depth should be implemented to counter its impact, and if the breccia is within or close to the pit limit, a deliberate effort must be made to mine it out.

A dynamic model is used to represent the single-stage closed grinding mill circuit at Mogalakwena North Concentrator. The circuit consists of a ball mill closed by a hydrocyclone. The circuit is modelled according to a semi-mechanistic non-linear dynamic model available in literature. An algebraic routine is used to fit model parameters to steady-state process data. Preliminary validation results against dynamic data indicate that the model is capable of capturing the main dynamic trends of the plant. Since classical system identification techniques proved insufficient to produce accurate models; the non-linear model can be used as a reliable source for model-predictive controller design. The limit equilibrium model, used in displacement discontinuity codes, is a popular method to simulate pillar failure. This paper investigates the use of physical modelling to calibrate this model. For the experiments, an artificial pillar material was prepared and cubes were poured using the standard 100 mm × 100 mm civil engineering concrete moulds. The friction angle between the cubes and the platens of the testing machine was varied by using soap and sandpaper. Different modes of failure were observed depending on the friction angle. Of interest is that significant loadshedding was recorded for some specimens which visually remained mostly intact. This highlights the difficulty of classifying pillars as failed or intact in underground stopes where spalling is observed. The laboratory models enabled a more precise calibration of the limit equilibrium model compared to previous attempts. Guidelines to assist with calibration of the model are given in the paper. The limit equilibrium model appears to be a useful approximation of the pillar failure as it could simulate the stress-strain behaviour of the laboratory models.

"SynopsisDry beneficiation of coal by air dense medium fluidized bed is an emerging trend. It is widely believed that the particle size of the medium has a significant effect on the separation efficiency. This investigation demonstrates that medium particle size has a major effect on separation efficiency. Experimental results show that different size fractions of the same feed respond differently to the same size fraction of medium solids. Furthermore, a particular size fraction of feed coal responds differently with different size fractions of medium solids. The Ep values and overall metallurgical performance parameters, obtained from experimental results, clearly indicate the superior performance of an air dense medium fluidized bed separator when using –150+106 µm magnetite powder as the fluidizing medium. These observations reinforce the importance of sizing the medium particle size for the air dense medium fluidized bed.IntroductionIn an air dense medium fluidized bed (ADMFB), a fluidizing bed of a particular density is created by suspending solid particles in an upward air flow. A feed containing coal particles of different densities is introduced into this fluidizing bed. The particles with relative density less than the bed density float on the top of the bed, while particles denser than the bed density sink through it. Since there is a general correlation between ash content and density of coal particles, it is possible to remove ash-forming impurities from a raw coal to the required level by regulating the density of the fluidizing bed. Recently, the ADMFB process has received significant attention world-wide for its specific advantages of low operating cost and less restrictive for small capacities (Luo and Chen, 2001; Houwelingen and de Jong, 2004; Dwari and Hanumantha Rao, 2007; Sahu et al., 2009; Mohanta et al., 2012). This process is not recognized as a well-established industrial practice because of the availability of efficient wet processing technology. However, with the revival of interest in dry beneficiation of coal in general, and ADMFB in particular, there is a concerted effort to improve the efficiency of the ADMFB process, and successive improvements have made the process a competitive and viable option for beneficiating coal."

"The aim was to investigate stable pillar design procedures currently in use on chrome and platinum mines, subject them to a critical appraisal, and review some of the alternatives proposed in the literature. It is concluded that these pillar design methodologies suffer from drawbacks that can be detrimental to the mining industry and that an improvement is essential.It was decided that the increased availability of analytical models and failure criteria could be exploited to update the empirical to an analytical/empirical method. The proposed methodology adopted FLAC2D simulations using the Hoek-Brown failure criterion to calculate full stress-deformation curves for typical pillars. The mine stiffness concept was introduced to determine the pillar load, integrating the influence of the pillar and strata stiffness and mining geometry.The proposed methodology was calibrated by comparing experimental and predicted deformations and failure depth of pillars in one hard-rock mine. The conclusion was that the methodology is an improvement over the one currently in use. An improved factor of safety is given by the intersection point of curves for the stiffness of the system and the pillar strength. IntroductionThe paper describes part of the findings of a PhD thesis (Kersten, 2016) on an alternative stable pillar design methodology. This publication contains sufficient information to implement the method for further interpretation and testing. A detailed comparison of measured and predicted data is dealt with in the thesis, and the results show that there is promise in the methodology.The design of stable pillars in mining is of fundamental importance, not only in the Bushveld Complex mines but throughout the mining industry. Wherever mining occurs, pillars are formed at some stage and it is essential to predict their behaviour, i.e. whether they will burst, yield, or remain stable. Although of crucial importance, pillar design still suffers from major shortcomings and weaknesses."

Dusting phenomena have been examined at the tailings storage facility of Apatit JSC Kirovsk, a mining operation located in the far north of the Russian Federation. The material composition of the tailings was identified. Existing dust suppression methods were examined. Field observations were undertaken and official data was obtained from the Murmansk Administration for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring, and analysed. A database was built for forecasting dusting according to critical scenarios in order to estimate the peak MPCs of suspended solids in the atmospheric air. In most auriferous hydrothermal deposits, gold is preferentially associated with pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals, with higher economic gold values noted for the latter and arsenian pyrite minerals. In this paper, surface (Cryo-XPS) and solution (EDTA extraction) analysis were used to characterise pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals under different aqueous conditions involving electrokinetic study and collector interactions to better understand ways of improving the separation of pyrite and arsenopyrite. The evidence showed higher surface oxidation at solution pulp pH values in the range of 4-11 for arsenopyrite relative to pyrite. The observed highest ratio of pyrite to arsenopyrite selectivity was 1.7 at collector concentration of 50 g/t and decreased with an increase in collector concentration. The traditional route utilised for the recovery of Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs) in South Africa involves the concentration of ore by flotation, followed by smelting to produce a PGM rich matte, which is then digested hydrometallurgically to solubilise base metals and Platinum Group Elements (PGE). HCl/Cl2 is conventionally used for PGE dissolution from concentrated material, which is an aggressive reagent associated with high maintenance costs as well as environmental concerns. Of interest is the leaching of PGMs directly from mineral ores, low grade concentrates and tailings in a cyanide-ferricyanide system as a more sustainable alternative. This system has shown favourable Pt recoveries among the Pt minerals, but with sperrylite (PtAs2) displaying highly refractory behaviour. The dissolution of sperrylite is investigated in a cyanide-ferricyanide system in the context of an electrochemical study involving OCP, chrono-amperometry and cyclic voltammetry. This approach allows the assessment of leaching characteristics as well as the investigation of surface passivation, which is believed to contribute to poor Pt recoveries. The b-solidifying g-TiAl intermetallic alloys of nominal composition Ti-48Al (binary alloy), Ti-48Al-2Nb (ternary alloy), Ti-48Al-2Nb-0.7Cr (quaternary alloy), and Ti-48Al-2Nb-0.7Cr-0.3Si (quinary alloy) (in at.%) were developed. The materials produced were tensile tested at room temperature. The as-cast microstructures and fracture surfaces of the tensile tested specimens were examined using conventional metallographic methods. Microstructural examination indicated that the alloys were comprised of lamellar structures (a2+g) embedded in columnar dendritic cores in the as-cast condition. However, the quinary alloy contained a Ti5Si3 second phase. The alloys exhibited no detectable ductility during tensile deformation, indicating the brittleness of all the materials. The fracture surfaces revealed that the alloys failed by translamellar fracture with correspondingly few cleavage facets.

Hydrogen peroxide is often used as an oxidising agent in experimental waste electronic equipment (WEE) leaching work. However, the high cost of peroxide is a negative factor in its consideration in further process development. A few studies have reported on the efficient application of peroxide addition schedules to ensure optimum reagent consumption. Large quantities of unleached substrate material contained in WEE feed material result in a large dead volume of material in the leaching reactor. This factor necessitates fast reaction rates to enable the use of a high feed material throughput reactor to enhance overall project viability via hydrometallurgical processing. In this study the effects of hydrogen peroxide addition schedules on base metal leaching efficiency and solution temperatures were tested at laboratory scale. The results showed that overall peroxide consumption can be optimised to lower levels by matching peroxide additions to the particular feed material’s leaching behaviour. A simplified integrated model for peroxide decomposition is used to explain its effect on solution temperatures and leaching rates. With the continuous increase in ore mineralogical complexity coupled with decreasing head grades, there is a need for mining industries to process large tonnages of material to meet global metal demands. Smarter, cheaper techniques are required to better map ore mineralogical variations proceeding to pre-concentration (flotation) stages for higher performance and metal recoveries. This paper is aimed at briefly reviewing previous studies on different selected ore mineralogy, with the focus on their pulp chemistry, to identify relationships which aid quicker flotation feed variation monitoring. Very little published work exists linking pulp chemistry parameters to flotation feed mineralogical variation. A successful application implies maximising grades at higher metal recoveries and reducing the cost of reagent for a better performing flotation circuit.
