The objective of this paper is to share the optimisation journey of a pilot Reflux classifier (RC) circuit in the Exxaro GG1 plant, at Grootegeluk beneficiation complex in Lephalale, South Africa. The RC circuit was commissioned in 2016 to produce semi-soft coking coal at its fines circuit; however the stability of operation as well as the quality control of the coal product was not fully achieved. Various test campaigns and optimisation studies were conducted to understand and optimise the RC circuit at GG1. The studies revealed circuit design inefficiencies; provided an improved technical understanding of the current pilot circuit and the parameters required for the circuit to reach a stable operation. The operation was stabilised with its current inefficiencies to produce an average 12.5% ash semi-soft coking coal product for sustained periods, above the initial target of 10.3% ash. A challenge in mine planning is the optimal allocation of resources to the appropriate workplaces within the shift cycle (labour, equipment type, and other resources) in order to carry out the shift cycle activities, achieve planned production targets, and ultimately maximize production within all infrastructure constraints. Generally, detailed mine planning is done on a monthly basis at a workplace level in order to determine the production targets. The production supervisor, mine overseer, or equivalent production manager must then make the appropriate resource allocation trade-off decisions on a daily basis per shift to try and deliver to the plan and required production target. Due to the complexity and number of permutations of possible resource allocation decisions, it is impossible for a human brain to make the appropriate and optimal allocation decisions that will result in achieving the maximum or target production. These allocation decision permutations must deal with the current status of workplaces (availability, position in the cycle etc.), the status of equipment availability (available, planned maintenance, or breakdown etc.), distance between the workplaces (traveling time of equipment between workplaces, etc.) and equipment type required for that shift cycle activity. All these factors need to be taken into account in resource allocation to plan for the shift, and even during the shift if a major piece of equipment becomes unavailable or a workplace activity is not progressing as planned. This paper is a case study on how an optimization algorithm can be used to create a production planning system for optimization of resource allocation in a mechanized underground platinum operation. A business case for optimal allocation of resources is demonstrated and compared to the current manual planned allocation.

This study investigates the use of dense convolutional neural networks to estimate bubble size distributions in flotation froths. 20 videographically captured images of froths from an industrial platinum flotation plant in South Africa were labelled semantically with an image annotation tool, LabelMe (https://github.com/wkentaro/labelme). As a result, pixels in the images could be categorized into three classes, namely ‘bubbles’ (class 0), ‘bubble boundaries’ (class 1) and ‘background’ (class 2). A U-net architecture with a ResNet34 backbone was trained to segment the images via classification of the pixels in the images. 5 of the 20 images were used to validate the performance of the neural network. Explicit inclusion of the bubble boundaries as a class proved to be significantly more effective than training the network with two classes only (i.e. bubbles and background). However, the thickness of the boundary layer regions were critical. If too thin, it was difficult to distinguish between some contiguous bubbles and if too thick, some fine bubbles may not be identified. The results were promising, although there is still significant scope for improvement, among other by making use of more images for training and validation. Eccentric High Pressure Centrifugal Comminution (eHPCC) is a novel comminution device that provides a single step to achieve a desired target grind size. The mechanisms within the unit mirror particle breakage that is akin to high-pressure-grinding rolls (HPGR) and high-intensity-attrition with air classification. eHPCC receives lump and can produce a product P80 such that the progeny are at or less than natural grain size of the feed. The unit operates in either closed or open-circuit. The grinding zone is dry and free of steel grinding media. This paper presents evidence of eHPCC-2 capable of selective and preferential mineral liberation. A recent test campaign on a blend of underground quartzgold- vein ore was completed. The feed to eHPCC-2 trial was SAG mill trommel oversize (low-grade pebble rejects). eHPCC-2 operated open-circuit with air-fluidisation in the rotating-grinding-chamber, classifying particles based on terminal velocity of the air-swept product particles, displaying size and mineral composition classification taking place at the same time. There is an opportunity for future industrial research targeting eHPCC as an advanced integrated comminution and classification technology. The platinum group metals (PGMs), i.e. ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium, and platinum, are typically found in association with each other, but also importantly, with nickel and copper. Typically Platinum and palladium have the greatest economic significance and other PGMs are typically produced as co-products of these. With recent increases in the value of nickel, cobalt, and the PGMs and an ever increasing focus on the sustainable use of metals, interest in the processing of secondary feed material sources and metal-bearing residues has also substantially increased. As an efficient, proven, and environmentally sound technology Outotec Ausmelt Top Submerged Lance (TSL) Technology has gained commercial acceptance in the nickel industry, including PGM recovery. For the processing of nickel- and PGM-bearing feed materials, five Outotec Ausmelt Furnaces at four sites are in operation. Two of these furnaces are located in Rustenburg, South Africa, which is by far the biggest mine-based producer of platinum. Outotec also has hydrometallurgical processes available for further treatment and extraction of PGMs, which are also briefly discussed.

A mineralogical study was conducted on the feed (3.51 g/t Au and ~90 g/t Ag) and four leach residue samples (assaying 0.09 to 0.19 g/t Au and 30.0 to 61.5 g/t Ag) from the Pinos Altos silver-gold deposit in Mexico to determine the cause for gold and silver losses. A comprehensive mineralogical and analytical approach including fire assay, gravity pre-concentration, ore microscopy, mineral liberation analyser (MLA) and electron microprobe was used for the current study. Results showed that gold and silver lost in the leach residues occurred mainly as inclusions in quartz and silicates (accounting for over 80% for Au and 92% for Ag of the head assays, respectively), with a minor amount in iron oxide and other minerals. The amount of liberated gold and silver is negligible. Results also showed that gold and silver particles in leach residues are mainly ranged from 1 µm to 5 µm in size, which implies that ultrafine grinding is required to improve the recoveries of these two metals. Toll and custom treatment of base metal concentrates have been performed for decades as mines and concentrators are developed distant from capital and, energy-intensive smelting and refining facilities. Commercial treatment terms have been developed and refined for over a century, and are negotiated taking into account a complex array of quality and economic factors. Treatment of third-party concentrates in the South African platinum industry is a comparatively recent development, brought about by the opening up of mineral rights and operations being developed that are smaller than the critical size required to sustain capitalization of smelting or refining plant. Published commercial terms have not been demonstrated to reflect the complexities and subtleties of base metal concentrate markets. This paper outlines some key elements and parameter ranges of base metal concentrate treatment contracts, and applies similar principles to typical Merensky and UG2 platinum group element (PGE) concentrates to determine potential value distribution between the mining and treatment parties in tolling arrangements.

The determination of densimetric information to predict coal washabilities is an important step in characterising the feed material, as well as the performance of operating plants. However, traditional methods like float-and-sink analysis are hazardous and time-consuming. This is especially true for finer particle size ranges, where very long settling times are required in a medium. De Beers Technologies recently developed a density analyser, known as the RhoVol, for use on diamondiferous kimberlite. Operating over size ranges from 25 mm down to 3 mm, it can determine the mass, volume, density, size and shape of all the particles in a given population and is thus able to provide information about the densimetric distribution on a single particle basis. A study was carried out to compare uncalibrated and calibrated RhoVol results to densimetric and size data obtained using traditional zinc chloride float-sink procedures, for three different coal samples in the size range 3 mm to 8 mm. The results indicate that the RhoVol can be used to provide simple, rapid and safe size-by-washability information for coal, provided proper pre-calibration is done, mainly to account for the effects of particle porosity in the density determination. "BASF Mining Solutions have developed a new generation of copper solvent-extraction reagents that offer significant benefits over the existing reagents available to the industry today. Initial laboratory studies and pilot-plant trials have shown that these new reagents offer the benefits of a dramatic increase in resistance to degradation and are nitration-proof. This paper details a recent pilot-plant campaign at a commercial solvent-extraction plant. The main focus was to evaluate the copper/iron selectivity, copper recovery and net transfer of the new reagent compared with the conventional oxime reagents. The new reagent displays similar copper recovery and net transfer capabilities from typical agitation leach solutions. The pilot-plant results show a step change improvement in copper/iron selectivity in comparison with the existing modified and non-modified hydroxyoxime reagents used on the commercial plant. INTRODUCTION Copper solvent extraction (SX) from an acidic aqueous solution is typically accomplished using a hydroxyoxime extractant (Jergensen, 1999; Kordosky, 2000; Szymanowski, 1993). There are three hydroxyoximes from which all standard formulations are derived: 5-nonyl salicylaldoxime (NSAO), 5-dodecyl salicylaldoxime (DSAO) and 2-hydroxy-5-nonyl acetophenone oxime (HNAO). In the case of NSAO, it is necessary to use equilibrium modifiers in order to increase the copper stripped from the extractant (Kordosky & Virnig, 2003). Blends of DSAO, NSAO and HNAO are used to cover a wide spectrum of conditions (Kordosky, 2008). Use of modified aldoximes and reagent blends over the last 30 years has influenced the way copper producers and equipment manufacturers have approached the operation of copper plants. Existing solvent-extraction reagents cater for typical pregnant leach solutions (PLS) of copper mining systems which do not have significant effects on the reagent. Table I illustrates the range of copper concentration, pH values, temperature and iron concentrations for different leaching operations. As conditions become increasingly aggressive (i.e., higher PLS temperatures in primary sulfide leach or high iron content), current reagents become less capable of functioning according to expectations. One example is the effect of high iron (Fe3+) concentration in PLS and operating SX to achieve high copper recoveries. The ferric is partially chemically extracted and is transferred to elctrowinning (EW) during the stripping stage. To avoid a build-up of iron in electrolyte, which negatively affects current efficiency, a bleed of electrolyte is required. This bleed leads to excessive consumption of reagents, such as cobalt added to the EW process, and thus increases operational cost."

Six Associate Members: Messrs B. T. Hosking, R. E. Powell, W. Weber, T. Bulloch, E. J. Jackson, P. J. Muller. Fourteen Visitors. Total Present: 31. The Chairman declared the meeting open and extended a welcome to all visitors including Mr R. C. J. Goode, President of the Institute. MINUTES OF PREVIOUS GENERAL MEETING The Minutes of the General Meeting held on the 26th June, 1969, were read and adopted. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT The Chairman presented a report outlining the activities of the Branch during the past year. Membership of the local Branch had increased from 80 to 99 during the year. DECLARATIONOF OFFICEBEARERS The Chairman announced that owing to his transfer out of the Witbank area, he was unable to accept the nomination as Chairman for a further year of office. The outgoing committee had elected Mr J. Meintjes Chairman and Mr A. Bain Vice-Chairman for the ensuing year. Mr J. Meintjes then took the chair. Mr J. Meintjes thanked Mr C. G. Sowry for his successful steering of the Branch during its period of inauguration. ELECTION OF COMMITTEE MEMBERS The Chairman then read the Scrutineers' Report and declared the following eight members elected as Committee Members for the 1969-1970 year: Messrs I. Botha, A. W. Most mine safety initiatives in South Africa are doomed to limited success because of one simple fact: they are a-historical and un-cultural and do not deal with the serious ?legacy issues? that still negatively impact on safety, production, and relationships. We in the SA mining industry continually use imported, foreign safety concepts and systems that will not work fully in a South African context. ?The 4th Wave: Culture-Based Behavioural Safety?, as developed by Lance Bloch, an international award-winning clinical psychologist with 12 years? experience in the mining industry - focused mostly on Platinum - is making waves. He has been very successful in creating people-centred, empowered, high-performance safety cultures wherever he has worked. Not only does the 4th Wave transform the corporate culture of a mine, improving safety and production and building an environment of Ubuntu, but it also uses people?s cultures as a means of winning hearts and minds in the battle for safe production. Powerful relationships are built through engagement at all levels, leading to all being focused on the best needs of the company and its constituents as a whole. The programmes are no less than nation-building - something most necessary in the industry, with the pressures from community, unions, the DMR, and politicians. This presentation will describe and discuss the 4th Wave as an advance on previous safety technology and programmes, as particularly relevant to platinum mining in South Africa today.

The effects of utilizing recycled tailings pond water from the flotation plant at the Mining Company of Guemassa (MCG) on galena recovery and selectivity towards chalcopyrite (RPb-Cu) , sphalerite (RPb- Zn), and pyrrhotite (RPb-Fe) were studied at bench scale. The results showed that recycling the tailings pond water in the lead circuit without addition of fresh water gave a good flotation performance in terms of lead recovery (Rpb) (75%) and selectivity towards the other metals: RPb-Cu (54%), RPb-Zn (60%) and RPb-Fe(65%). This allows the water to be recycled at least four times. However, increasing the d80 from 100 μm to 160 μm currently used at the MCG plant had a negative effect on the lead flotation performance.

This paper describes a study of seismic records from the Kiirunavaara mine footwall which were interpreted in relation with numerical models developed outside the study. Seismic data was retrieved from a portion of the mine and filtered with respect to the ratio between energy carried by an event's P (primary) and S (secondary) waves (Es/Ep ratio), local magnitude, and active mining depth. The data was analysed using Es/Ep ratios and Gutenberg-Richter graphs to determine the event origin, mechanisms, and minimum magnitude cut-off. The magnitude completeness was identified by studying the b-value stability and b-value differentiation between origin sets. It was shown that, by separating seismic events into the origin components shear, complex, and tensile based on Es/Ep ratios, a representative value for the magnitude completeness can be identified for a catalogue with a convex cumulative log curve. The majority of the events were shown to be of shear-slip origin based on the recorded Es/Ep ratios, with pure tensile events constituting only about 10% of the recorded data. Spatial and temporal event location patterns were studied and compared with numerical modelling results. The comparison showed a correlation between shear-slip seismic events and volumes experiencing high differential stresses in the lower part of the footwall. In the upper part of the footwall the results did not reveal any clear correlation between observed damage in drifts and seismic event locations. The concentration of seismic events in the lower portion of the footwall is discussed in the context of rock mass displacements. The results indicate a possible connection between mine seismicity at depth and damage observations in the drifts in higher non-seismic areas by seismic softening and subsequent lateral expansion of the rock mass.

"Zimbabwe is endowed with rich deposits of minerals such as diamonds, platinum, coal, uranium, lithium, gold, antimony, iron, and chrome. Bioleaching has been implemented as an efficient and low-cost method to extract metals such as copper, cobalt, and gold from sulphide and/or ironcontaining ores and mineral concentrates in a number of countries around the globe. Zimbabwe, despite being a world leader in mineral wealth, has gone through years of economic stagnation which have brought with them energy shortages. Bioleaching is an innovative way to recover minerals from ores using relatively low-capital-cost and non-polluting technology. Principally, iron- and sulphur-oxidizing bacteria can be used to oxidize iron and sulphide to ferric iron and sulphuric acid, respectively, and the ferric iron oxidizes the insoluble metal sulphides to soluble metal sulphates that can be readily recovered from solution. Although some minerals such as gold are inert to biological reactions, they can be liberated using bacteria that act on certain types of ores and other minerals that co-occur with these minerals. The geology of the mineralized areas in Zimbabwe, rich in chalcopyrite / pyrite, allows a number of microorganisms to be used for the extraction of minerals by bio-oxidation. This paper reviews the potential of bioleaching in the country. IntroductionZimbabwe has rich deposits of minerals including diamonds, platinum, coal, uranium, lithium, gold, antimony, iron, and chrome. Bioleaching is defined as the use of microorganisms to facilitate the extraction of metals from sulphide or iron-containing ores or concentrates (Rawlings, 2004, 1997). Bioleaching has been shown to be an efficient (Blowes, Ptacek, and Jurjovec, 2003; Nordstrom and Southam, 1997; Schippers, 2004) and low-cost (Schippers et al., 2010) method to extract minerals in many countries around the globe. For example, aerobic Fe(II)- and sulphur-oxidizing bacteria have been shown to be up to two orders of magnitude more efficient in the oxidation of pyrite than the chemical processes (Blowes, Ptacek, and Jurjovec, 2003; Nordstrom and Southam, 1997; Schippers, 2004). Additionally, bioleaching can be used to extract minerals from low-grade ores, sulphidic waste rock dumps, and tailings efficiently (Schippers et al., 2010)."

Underground coal gasification (UCG) is becoming more popular as the reserves of good quality, mineable coal are starting to diminish, and yet the global energy demand from coal is still increasing. The purpose of this research project was to investigate cavity formation within a coal block due to the combustion reactions in the context of UCG. The cavity plays a pivotal role in the UCG process, as it is essentially the gasification reactor. Cavity formation in an in situ gasification process using the forward combustion linking method (FCL) had been investigated, and a laboratory model was created to simulate the process. The experiment was performed by drilling a U-shaped tunnel into a coal block, which was then combusted internally with air that was fed through an injection hole. A heating element (at approximately 500°C) was used to supply the required heat for combustion at the base of the injection well. The coal blocks were analysed using micro-focus X-ray tomography. The tomography results showed that the coal tended to crack along the bedding plane after a short duration of combustion, due to either the formation of clinker or the expansion of swelling vitrinite along the horizontal tunnel. The deposit was thicker at the base of the injection well compared to the base of the production well; this may have been caused by the turbulence of the air flow and the relatively high oxygen concentration at the base of the injection well. A comparison of the results with work by Daggupati et al. (2010) showed the same trend, despite the slightly different methodology applied.

This paper explores how to apply system dynamics principles to surface mining problems towards understanding the consequences of mining efficiencies. Some simulation examples related to machine and people performance have been used to demonstrate systems engineering concepts to mining engineers. The simulation tool used is Vensim, which is widely used in industrial engineering applicable to systems thinking, and systems dynamics. The science and mathematics behind the system dynamics as well as benefits and typical challenges are discussed to explore the applicability to mining problems. The benefit of having one less drill is easily quantifiable with the developed model which is one of many other measurable benefits, using the developed model. Some of the benefits of the improved quality of drill holes are not fully quantified as this depends on the mine specific inputs. There are examples of quantifying this in the other industries using system dynamics tools.

This paper shows, through a case study, the impact of multivariate grade modelling upon mine design and mine planning. A deposit explored by drill holes is considered, in which the grades of five elements (copper, silver, molybdenum, arsenic, and antimony) are of interest. Forty alternative models of the deposit are constructed by fitting the joint correlation structure of the grade variables and using conditional cosimulation. In addition, a reference model, obtained by averaging the alternative models, is also considered. The study shows that the resulting mine design (final pit characteristics and production schedules) is sensitive to the grade model under consideration, and that the design based on the reference model may not be optimal when compared to the alternative models based on cosimulation. However, when assuming a given long-term plan and extraction sequence, the grades and net present value (NPV) calculated on the reference model are unbiased with respect to those calculated on the alternative models with the same extraction sequence. The latter allow assessing the possible dispersion of the actual grades and NPV around their expected values, and are useful for the planner in order to determine the probability of meeting given production targets and of exceeding or falling short of given threshold grades. Additionally, unlike cosimulation, the separate simulation of each grade variable leads to unrealistic resource models and to biased results in mine design and mine planning. This approach should therefore be avoided, unless the grade variables are spatially uncorrelated.
