"At present, research on the surface chemical properties of uranium minerals is very scanty, which restricts the research progress of uranium ore flotation process research. The research aimed at exploring the surface characteristics of two common uranium minerals and providing basis for flotation process to enrich uranium minerals in ore. This paper selected pitchblende and uraninite as the object of study, which are widely distributed in uranium deposits. We chose out the pure minerals of pitchblende and uraninite from different ores collected from different uranium deposits. By means of Zeta potential test and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) test, a preliminary study on surface characteristics of the pure minerals of pitchblende and uraninite was conducted. And the significance of the change of Zeta potential, the elements composition and valence state on the minerals surface for flotation was discussed. The research shows that, the Zeta potentials of pitchblende and uraninite in pure water are negative mainly when the pH value varies from 2 to 11, which maybe a result of the difference of ionization capacity between two kinds of oxy-compounds on the surface of minerals. On the surface of pitchblende and uraninite, the metal elements are mainly U, Th and Pb. U is mainly in the form of UO2, Th is mainly in the form of ThO2, and Pb is mainly in the form of Pb and PbO. Based on the surface characteristics of pitchblende and uraninite, we can select process and reagents appropriately in uranium ore flotation.INTRODUCTION Globally, the major challenges associated with exploitation of low grade ores are about finding economically feasible processes for reducing the mass of gangue minerals (Filippov et al., 2012). Among the beneficiation technologies of low grade uranium ores with complex minerals assemblage, flotation is the common process which is used to reduce production cost and eliminate the acid-consuming minerals (Li et al., 2016; Liu et al., 2015)."

The kaolin losses in hydrocyclone classification are determined by the fines, which are discharged together with the water to the underflow. This paper presents an improved technique of water injection to the conical part of the cyclone applied especially for small cyclones in kaolin preparation. In small hydrocyclones water, injection is a sensitive process. Therefore, the process was stabilized by controlled water injection dependent on the measurement of the underflow shape. Three applications of this innovation are presented. In the first case, the water injection is applied for the separation stage in dilute suspension where the final product is produced in the overflow of a 50mm hydrocyclone. The underflow contains sand and residual kaolin. For a higher kaolin recovery, the underflow is usually treated downstream in washing cyclones. The wash water injection results in a 45 ? 50% - reduction of the kaolin fraction <25µm in the underflow. Thus, water injection to the classifying cyclone leads to a separation comparable with a downstream washing stage. An additional hydrocyclone stage can be deleted. The second application refers to a classification in dense suspension. Here, the underflow of the last hydrocyclone stage was directed to a washing in a 50mm hydrocyclone. The additional injection of 3L/min water in to the conical part of the cyclone reduced the kaolin losses by half.The third application was executed in the washing stage equipped with 75mm hydrocyclones where the underflow is directed to flotation. In this study, approximately 3 tons of coal sample taken from thickener entrance was prepared by mineral processing techniques and cleaned by gravity methods. The samples were classified to 5 size fractions by wet screening. The size fractions of +1mm and -1 +0.500 mm were chosen for direct consumption or cleaning by spirals. The studies by Multi Gravity Separator (MGS) were carried out with the -0.500 +0.280 mm and -0.280 +0.020 mm size fractions where the -0.020 mm fraction does not used in the experiments. The clean coal fractions of +1 mm and -1 +0.500 mm obtained by classification were subjected to lower calorific value (LCV), ash and total sulphur analyses. The results were 4168-4946 kcal/kg (on dry basis), 31.01-38.54 % ash and 4-4.27 % total sulphur content respectively. The results of the clean coal concentrated by MGS experiments in -0.500 +0.280 mm fraction was found 5918 kcal/kg LCV, 19.82 % ash content and 80.47 % combustible recovery. The results for the -0.280 +0.020mm fraction were 6004 kcal/kg LCV, 19.19 % ash content, 80.47 % combustible recovery respectively. With reference to the above experimental results, pre-economic evaluation studies were completed and decided to construct an additional unit to the plant. Capacity of the constructed unit is 75.000 t/y which corresponds $ 2.600.000 income in a year. General Directorate of Turkish Coal Enterprises concluded to apply this project to the other coal washing plants in the country due to the successful results of this study and laboratory studies has been going on by MTA currently. Metso has a long history supplying boilers for high ash coal firing. These boilers are based on circulating fluidized bed (CFB) technology. CFB?s biggest benefit is fuel flexibility ? it can burn fuels from high moisture content to high ash content. Metso has delivered tens of CFB boilers burning waste or high ash coal starting on 80?s. Some of the boilers have been in operation twenty years meaning that there is a long term experience from these plants available. This feedback includes boiler performance and maintenance issues of the boiler. Metso is also delivering coal washing plants to improve coal quality, i.e. reducing ash content of the coal. The idea to combine coal washing plant and CFB boiler was made up two years ago in Metso. Up-coming legislation of coal washing and restrictions for washery reject land-filling in India are good drivers for this kind of concept. Pre-study of this kind of concept led to the conclusion that coal washing process can be fine-tuned so that reject?s calorific value is only 1100 kcal/kg and that was set as a target for boiler design. Metso shipped 200 tons of washery reject to its own research center located in Tampere Finland. First a wide range of fuel characterization tests were done in lab-scale and after that one week test run in 4 MW CFB pilot boiler was done. Test run proved that 1100 kcal/kg can be fired without any support fuel with special boiler design. Test run results gave a good set of data regarding combustion efficiency, emission performance and boiler dynamic behaviour when burning this kind of fuel. These results are introduced in this paper. This paper introduces also the CFB boiler concept for washery reject firing including boiler plant, fuel and ash handling systems and flue gas cleaning system. Dense medium cyclones have been in use for washing coarse and small coals for more than 50 years. There have been modifications in its design and today these units have become indispensable for washing of Indian coals possessing difficult washing characteristics. About 53 percent of the Indian coals (coking and non-coking) are being washed in jigs, about 38 per cent are washed in dense medium cyclones while the remaining 9 per cent is treated in other units like Barrel Washers, Heavy Media Baths and Drum Separators etc. The present paper deals with the attempts made for design of industrial Dense Medium Cyclones for enhanced coal recovery. Two industrial units of 500 mm diameter and 650 mm diameter were designed with their washing capacities being 200 m3/hr and 350 m3/hr, respectively. The results of the pilot tests conducted on 500 mm cyclone treating very high Near Gravity Material coals crushed to -3.0+0.5 mm gave an ash reduction of up to 19.5 percent with the new design i.e., from a feed ash of 34.5 percent to 15.06 percent in clean coal with an appreciable yield of 45 percent in one stage.

"Arsenic-gold bearing ores are used as flux in smelting or are leached to extract gold. The main aim is to decrease the arsenic content in processed materials and to break up the ore lattice, thus liberating the gold. Some regulations were established by authorities for sulfidizing of arsenic bearing compounds in a presence of pyrite and for oxidation of ores and concentrates in the presence of soda.This article analyses the results of laboratory and pilot plant testing of dissociating and oxidizing roasting of gold-arsenic bearing concentrates. During the dissociation roasting under vacuum, arsenic is sublimated into elemental and sulfide forms. This process allows for the minimization of the negative influence on the environment, but requires costly engineering solutions. Roasting in a limited quantity of oxygen in the gaseous phase makes it possible to sublimate arsenic in the form of oxides and sulfides and it may be carried out in fluid bed furnaces.Oxidizing roasting of the concentrates in the presence of soda results in formation of water-soluble compounds and forces practically all arsenic and sulfur to remain in the cinder."

The Lake Balaton is the biggest and for many reasons the most important lake in Hungary. To preserve its healthy nature it is necessary to remove the accumulated mud time to time, similarly to the many living waters, lakes and rivers everywhere. Typical existing technologies (mechanical, hydraulic) require large depositional areas, where the removed slurry and mud is dewatered through very long time. One problem is the non existence of an economical mud thickening technology. Another major problem is that current methods remove the sand fraction with the mud as well. Many times sand has to be complemented from outer sources to endanger the natural balance of the living water. By the financial support of the NKFP 3A/068/2004 Hungarian Research Project our consortium has been looking for the solution to the above mentioned problems. The original ideas of the project were: 1. Sand should be separated and returned to the water by hydrocyclon; 2. New mud thickener should be developed based on the principle that vibrating rods can force settling and packing of mud particles. The work was started by fundamental research with different samples from Lake Balaton and River Bodrog. An automated settling column (45L) has been built for the investigation of the effect of vibrating rods on the settling behavior of suspensions. An optical sensor has been developed by with the settling curve (height of settling slurry as function of time) can be automatically measured. Different vibrating methods and parameters have been tested by the application of a linear motor and mechanical eccentric drive. On the basis of the fundamental research a new thickener, called the rod ? lamella thickener has been developed and an industrial size (50m3/h) mud removing technology has been built. Main parts of the technology are the traditional dredging barge and the thickening technology. The thickening and sand separation technology is tugged by the dredging ship. Its main elements are the homogenization tank, slurry pump, hydrocyclon and the rod ? lamella thickener. In this unit lamellas carry out pre-thickening, then vibrating rods further increase the concentration. The thickened mud is transported out by a screw - of which revolution number is precisely controlled - against a spring supported valve. Paper reports about the design, building, water probe and on-site tests of this mud removing technology. Two new patents had been presented, one is about the rod ? lamella thickener and the other is about the mud removing technology with sand separation.

The separation in gravity concentrators is based on the density difference between valuable and gangue minerals. In addition to density, many auxiliary parameters like particle size, shape, feed rate, pulp density etc. plays an important role in the separation. The performance efficiency of gravity units is largely based on the interference of such auxiliary parameters during separation. Many gravity concentrators are used for the beneficiation of cassiterite ores and performance of which are varying with different feed material, particle size and required enrichment from the unit. Selection of gravity units is generally based on laboratory testing and data collected from the previous experience. In the present investigation cassiterite ore collected from Uljin deposit, South Korea has been subjected to various gravity units like jig, spiral, and Knelson concentrator with the intension to pre-concentrate the ore. Second stage concentration was carried out using shaking tables. The article mainly summarizes performance evaluation methods employed for gravity concentrators. Selection of gravity circuit for the beneficiation of cassiterite was made on the basis of the recovery-grade curve, and Tromp curve methods. The need for a sustainable development of ore deposits makes it imperative to be innovative and mindful in creating an economically and environmentally viable operation, while maintaining a good working relationship with the various stakeholders involved in developing and operating a large and complex mining project. This is becoming immensely important as gold ore deposits are becoming more mineralogically complex along with lower grades presenting both metallurgical and environmental challenges that need to be addressed in mitigating risks and improving project economics. This paper presents Barrick?s approach to development of strategic technologies for our long-term sustainable growth through conversion of valuable resources into reserves for both our green-field development projects and the expansion of our existing mining operations. Some of the key strategic solutions, including mineral processing, metallurgical and energy technologies, developed by Barrick and their impact on some of our complex gold and copper-gold ores will also be discussed in this paper. Refractory iron ore deposits in China have various genesis and complicated types, the nature of which is poor, fine-disseminated and complex. Therefore, refractory iron ore could scarcely be separated and utilized by traditional mineral processing technology at present. It is necessary to explore deep reduction technology to change the characteristics of refractory iron ore and to use effectively the iron resource. And deep reduction technology is that on the condition of higher reduction temperature than that of magnetic roasting and stronger reducing atmosphere, the iron oxides from iron ore was reduced to metallic iron particle that is easy to dissociate. And then production from deep reduction is easily separated by magnetic separation and iron powder production was obtained finally. Deep reduction technology for Lingyang iron ore from Jilin, China, as the refractory iron ore, was studied in this paper. The influences of such main factors as reduction temperature, time and coal content were investigated. The results showed that the Metallization rate of reduction product was up to more than 90% under optimum conditions, and then higher iron grade and recovery of reduction iron powder were obtained from subsequent magnetic separation. Furthermore, the deep reduction mechanism in the system was studied by the means of XRD and SEM analysis for reduction production and Physical Chemistry of Metallurgy. Analytical results indicated that during deep reduction, the size of iron particle from deep reduction materials was increasing as reduction temperature rising and reduction time extending. The growth of metallic iron particle from deep reduction production was divided into such three stages as reduction nucleation, deep reduction and growth of metallic iron particle.

Studies of the dense medium and classifying cyclone have been conducted using the Fluent computational fluid dynamics code. Experimental measurements of the segregation of medium in a DM cyclone by gamma-ray tomography and the performance of a novel classifying cyclone design have been used to test and interpret the 3D CFD predictions. The predictions of the CFD models were generally plausible, though more work is required to incorporate turbulent mixing of the slurry in the cyclone. The benefits of the novel cyclone design were explained by the model in terms of conditions favouring reduction of short-circuiting at the vortex finder, and the removal of the air core from the wall at the apex. This work is based on surface chemical properties of bacteria during adaptation to high grade copper minerals and the projected consequences in Bio-Flotation process. The utility of bio-processing in the beneficiation of copper ore through bio-flotation is demonstrated. An autotroph Acidithiobacillus Ferrooxidans bacterium is adapted to high grade mixed copper ore sample by repeated subcultures. The surface characteristics were studies by analyses at different pH and time intervals. From the studies, it was established that the mineral-adapted cells became more hydrophobic as compared to unadapted cells during bio-flotation. Li-ion batteries are now used in electric vehicles (EVs), plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) and, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). Nanostructured Li(NiyMnzCo1-y-z)O2 is one of the more popular cathode chemistries for automotive Li-ion battery, due to its enhanced properties such as large surface area, short diffusion length, enhanced ionic and electronic conductivity, improved mechanical strength and structural integrity [Pan et al, 2013]. Recycling of Li-ion batteries helps to mitigate environmental effects of virgin metal extractions along with improper disposal of end of life batteries. To fulfill these objectives of the recycling, recovery of pure streams of the involved metals should be considered. In this study, the batteries were first discharged and dismantled in an inert atmosphere (Ar). The electrodes were then heat treated in a box furnace. This was done in order to break the chains of the adhesive (PVDF) and consequently separate the metallic substrates Cu and Al from the electrochemically active compound. This heat-treatment also helped to simplify the dissolution of the metal constituents in the electrochemically active compound from the cathode in the acid leaching process. Solvent extraction was chosen to achieve separation and recovery of metals with higher purity from these leachates. In the scope of the present work, a complete process from the point of dismantling to separation of constituent metals using solvent extraction was studied.

The blast furnace coke quality depends on the characteristics of coal blend, pre-carbonization techniques adopted such as stamping, vibro-compaction etc., and coking conditions. Of the above, coal blend plays a significant role in the production of quality coke. Furthermore, the quality of the blend depends on the quality of individual coals and their interaction making up the blend. During transportation and stockpiling, coal is in contact with air for periods of time that sometimes may exceed several months. During this time, reaction with oxygen in the presence of water, sunlight and possibly elevated temperatures may take place. The resulting weathered coal suffers some alteration in its technological properties, which in turn affects coke quality for Blast Furnace operation adversely. In this work, two coals belong two prime hard coking and hard coking categories, namely Illawarra & Tahmoor, were selected and kept in a separate stock pile for a period of 120 days. These coals were characterized in terms of proximate, rheological & petrography properties at a regular frequency. This report summarizes the impact of weathering on the coking behaviour of these two coals in terms of properties as mentioned above. However, the rate of loss depends on coal rank and storage conditions. This has been seen through this study that the loss depends on coal rank and storage conditions. Deterioration of rheological and petrographic properties were seen higher for low-rank coals, like in this study Tahmoor, which is a low rank coal, compared to Illawarra showed higher degree of coking property degradation within the same time period under identical environmental conditions. Low-rank coal deteriorates at a faster rate because low-rank coal is dominated by free radicals that easily react with oxygen, resulting in the creation of various carbonyl groups and weathered vitrinite. Based on the results obtained in this study, size of stock piles for different qualities of coals to be maintained, at a specific time, can be determined and recommended, so that target coke quality is always achieved.

The phosphate ore sample was taken from the iron tailings after recovering most of magnetite by magnetic separation in Longlin, Yunnan Province of China. Batch flotation tests had been conducted to upgrade the phosphate concentrate by conventional fatty acids reagents under 70% -75 µm of the particle size; however, the unsatisfied results (P2O5 grade of 27.84% and recovery of 49.25%) were obtained. Also there are a large amount of slimes trapped in the concentrate and high-dosages consumption of reagents, for example, more than15 kg/t soda ash and 2 kg/t sodium silicate at only one-staged roughing. Based on the analysis of X-ray diffraction (XRD) for the sample, most of gangues are clay, quartz, and chlorite, which may easy to over-grind and deteriorate the flotation process either on reagents consumption or slurry fluidity or viscosity. A hydro-cyclone had been introduced to pre-concentrate the phosphate ore by scrubbing the slime before flotation, which can result obviously in reducing the dosages of soda ash from 15 Kg/t to 4 Kg/t, and raising the grade of P2O5 in the concentrate from 27.84% to 36.13% at the expense of about 4% recovery of P2O5. They also substantially reduced the time of sedimentation of concentrate after flotation from ~10 to ~1 min. In this paper, the effects on the recovery of P2O5 by the different dosages of flotation reagents with or without de-sliming were studied, with the objective of determining the different effects on the functions of flotation reagents by slime during flotation. Today, arsenic has become a much greater problem than before because of the limitations introduced by WHO and USEPA that are lowered from 0.05 ppm to 0.01 ppm. In the nature Arsenic is mostly found as inorganic compounds in the forms of arsenite (As+3) and arsenate (As+5) in aqueous solutions. Arsenic contamination in ground and surface waters has been encountered in almost every country. This element has a carcinogenic effect and can occur in natural sources and anthropogenic sources such as metal mining, groundwater usage and industrial activities. In this study adsorbing colloid flotation was applied in the presence of aluminum sulfates. In the experiments SDS and K-Oleate were used as collectors while MIBC was the frother employed. The effects of collectors and aluminum/arsenic ratios on the removal of arsenic were examined under various pH values. It was found that arsenic removal enhanced with increasing aluminum concentration. Furthermore, it was observed that pH was a very critical parameter in all experiments. The best results were obtained when initial As: SDS: Al concentrations were 10:40:40 ppm at pH 5.5. At this concentration, the efficiency of arsenic removal found to be 99.9%. Using pure quartz and hematite minerals, the adsorption mechanism of mixed cationic/anionic reagent schemes was investigated through Hallimond flotation studies. The flotation response of quartz and hematite independently with cationic and anionic collectors as well as with mixed cationic/anionic collector systems is assessed. The flotation response as a function of pH and collector concentration was investigated. The single mineral flotation tests in the presence of anionic collectors, quartz does not respond to flotation, but the C12 amine flotation of quartz was observed to be pH and concentration dependent. It was observed that hematite flotation recovery is maximum at acidic pH with sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), neutral pH with oleate, and at basic pH about 9.5 with C12 amine. Flotation results with both quartz and hematite indicate an increased adsorption of cationic collector in the presence of anionic collector apart from its own co-adsorption. The incorporation of oleate in between C12 amine molecules decreases the electrostatic head-head repulsion and thereby increasing the adsorption of C12 amine due to attractive tail-tail hydrophobic bonds, besides forming a closely packed adsorbed layer enhancing the hydrophobicity. The increase in oleate concentration beyond C12 amine concentration leads to the formation of soluble C12 amine-oleate complex / precipitate and the adsorption of these species decreased the flotation since the alkyl chains are in chaotical orientation with a conceivable number of head groups directing towards the solution phase. Mathematical modeling of bioremediation has gained importance as it is used as an optimization tool for the remediation process involved in contaminated sites. The bioremediation of Cr(VI) has been studied taking into consideration the initial Cr(VI) concentration Cr(VI)ini, bacterial growth substrate concentration (S), maximum growth rate (µmax), yield coefficient (Y), half saturation constant (Ks), and inhibition constant (KI). As the enzymatic reaction is also affected by initial substrate concentration (Sini) and Ks, different ratios of (Ks/Sini) are analyzed. As the inhibition constant (KI) is not constant for all the enzyme reactions and it varies with Cr(VI)ini, the correlation between (KI) and Cr(VI)ini is developed. A set of differential equations pertaining to bioremediation of Cr(VI) has been solved using FORTRAN 90 program adopting the model developed. The results are verified with the experimental data from the literature and a good correlation has been obtained between the experimental data and the model predictions. The majority of the world?s nickel (Ni) resources occur as laterite ores, which are exceptionally complex, lower grade (<1.5% Ni) and expensive to treat using conventional smelting and high temperature/pressure autoclave methods. Heap leaching is a promising, less costly, alternative technology for processing low grade nickel laterite ores. However, significant technical challenges remain with Nickel laterite heap leaching, preventing its general adoption. This paper presents some highlights of laboratory column leaching studies undertaken to characterise, evaluate and optimise sulphuric acid leaching behaviour of Nickel laterite agglomerates. They provide basic but valuable information regarding Nickel laterite agglomerate structure stability and leaching performance under industrially-relevant, continuous acid irrigation conditions. In particular, Nickel and other key metals? (e.g. Co, Fe, Al and Mn) extraction rates, free acid concentration, bed slump and structural changes were determined at a given acid percolation rate as a function of time. Potential implications of the findings, for devising strategies for improved Nickel laterite plant heap leach operations are discussed. "Three important components of stirred tanks involved in energy consumption, the impellers and baffles, were investigated to intensify the agitation pretreatment on the flotation of nickel ores. Flotation tests revealed that the stirred tanks with two impellers had an advantage over those with one impeller in intensifying agitation pretreatment, and the higher agitation speed led to better flotation performance of nickel ores. Installation and removal of baffles were also employed in the stirred tanks, and flotation tests demonstrated that with baffles, the flotation grade increased significantly. These agitator design improvements were used to demonstrate that the energy supplied to the system significantly influences the flotation recovery and that if the energy consumption of the agitation pretreatment is ideal, flotation efficiency can be improved. Data from full-scale operations backed up these results.INTRODUCTIONThe flotation recovery of nickel-copper sulphide ore at the Western China nickel mine has historically been difficult due to the presence of large amounts of serpentine minerals (Feng, et al., 2012). Many studies reported that serpentine minerals tend to have a positive potential at pH values up to 9.5, while sulphides (such as pentlandite and chalcopyrite) have a low isoelectric point(Feng, et al., 2012). Serpentine minerals can form surface coatings on negatively charged sulphides surface due to electrostatic attraction when they interact with each other, which may also reduce collector adsorption and increase the hydrophilicity of the sulphide particles. In order to improve the flotation of nickel sulphides, sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium silicate, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and other agents are used to disperse serpentine coating from sulphide surfaces in the flotation of the Jinchuan deposit and other nickel ores in China ( Kirjavainen and Heiskanen, 2007; Lu, et al., 2011). However, it is difficult to improve of the sulphide flotation due to the high dosage and the lack of selectivity."
