"The objective of this study was to demonstrate the application of Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) to the continuous analysis of online monitoring of Al, Mg, Ni, Mn, Si and Fe in nickel ore limonite and saprolite slurry samples. Analysis was performed on slurry samples in air at atmospheric pressure. Two pure samples of limonite and saprolite were used. Mixtures of the two samples in varying proportions were used to build calibration curves, study the influence of solid/liquid ratio, and evaluate short and long term reproducibility. The LIBS measurement of these elements is independent of the water content (from 70-85%, the range allowed by our setup). Repeatability of the measurement and long term reproducibility (from day-to-day) were below 1.2 % and 2% respectively for all the elements studied in our conditions. The results obtained showed that an industrial LIBS analyzer could provide the chemical composition of the six elements Al, Mg, Ni, Mn, Si and Fe within 1-2 minutes.IntroductionThe metal-producing industry faces the major challenge of increasing productivity, reducing costs, and maximizing benefits from existing equipment. By pyrometallurgy, metal making involves the basic steps of charging the furnace, melting the charge and refining. By hydrometallurgy, the metal refining is carried out through the dissolution of the metal by chemical reaction and electrolysis. During refining either by pyrometallurgy or hydrometallurgy, it is critical that operating parameters be adjusted and controlled so that the chemistry of the melt or the solution is within predetermined limits. Presently, the complete turnaround time for sampling, sample transfer, analysis and communication of the results to the operators is often 30 minutes or more."

This paper introduces the technical characteristics, transformation scheme and production practice of the project in which Copper P-S Converter was replaced by Bottom Blowing Continuous converting for the first time, and introduces the technical achievements obtained by the project. The application practice proves that bottom blowing copper continuous converting technology can completely solve the problems of fugitive off-gas pollution in the ladle transportation, large amount of flue gas and fluctuation of flue gas caused by P-S converting. Comprehensive energy consumption and operating costs of producing blister copper, safety and environmental risks are greatly reduced, and economic, environmental and social benefits are significant. It is one of the preferred technologies for upgrade and to replace P-S converting technology. INTRODUCTION At present, more than 80% of copper production capacity is still using the P-S converting technology with a history of more than 100 years. During P-S converting process, melted copper matte needs to be transported by ladle, and it needs to rotate the furnace body several times, causing a lot of serious environmental and safety risks such as SO2 flue gas emission and low-altitude SO2 pollution. In addition, the high operating cost caused by low rate of air blowing, the short life of the refractory materials and high energy consumption during P-S converting become big problems. Other problems such as large amount of flue gas, low SO2 concentration, large fluctuation of flue gas volume and SO2 concentration, and discontinuous flue gas cause high cost of subsequent flue gas treatment are also needing to be solved. In order to solve these problems during the P-S converting, metallurgical engineer in various countries has spared a lot of efforts to develop continuous blowing process for decades. "An expert system applied to the control of mineral process unit operations is, by its nature, the site best operating practice, having been designed by the local experts in conjunction with consulting metallurgists. The “common sense” layer in a MET (MinnovEX Expert Technology) solution determines an appropriate action for the current operating conditions through a developed heuristic model of the process (expert system). The magnitude of the setpoint change that is made is proportional to the confidence that the system has in its interpretation of the current conditions (fuzzy logic). The solution is always striving to take the process to a constraint and thereby optimise the operation. An accepted limitation of the solution is that the only way the system can determine if a constraint has been reached is to exceed it and then withdraw – essentially “experimenting” with the process. By leveraging a model, which can accurately ""simulate"" the process, this restriction can be circumvented by pre-testing the set point change through a ""what if"" analysis and then modifying the solution as appropriate.At Ok Tedi, the introduction in 1999 of a MET expert system for SAG milling resulted in significant improvement in circuit throughput. Yet, with the additional inclusion of an accurate model of the process there was still more that could be achieved. Hence, in 2002 a MET Neural Network model was developed and deployed to enhance the existing expert system solution. The principal objective of this model was predicting the effect that changes in SAG tonnage and density would have on the power draw of the mill - essentially a power predictor. The results have seen a decrease in process variance with an associated increase in average circuit performance.This paper describes the methodology by which the Neural Network model was implemented, the considerations and limitations when applying this technology and ultimately the results that were achieved."

The Stability Graph Method is widely used in Canadian underground hard rock mines for open stope support design and is frequently used in the mine planning phase to assess the viability of stope geometries and to determine maximum permissible spans. The Method is well accepted due to its simplicity and suitability to a wide range of mining methods requiring the use of sublevels to access and extract the mining blocks. While this Method is reliable in situations where the maximum induced tangential stress creates adequate compressive stress keeping the face in a state of confinement, the Method fails to reflect the effect of low confinement caused by lower compressive stresses and instances where tensile stresses are developed. In this paper, a new Rock Stress Factor, A?, an update to the original Rock Stress Factor, A, is proposed, which will reflect the impact of low confinement or overstress regime on critical face stability. Two case studies, based on two Canadian operating gold mine shows that using the new Rock Stress Factor A? to predict the stability of stope hanging-wall and footwall gives better agreement with the CMS survey results, compared with the prediction using the original rock stress factor.

"North American Palladium commissioned the new concentrator at the Lac des Iles mine in the summer of 2001. The 15,000 tonnes per day mill replaced the existing 2,400 tonnes per day facility, as part of a major mine expansion.At Lac des Iles, the grain size distribution of the platinum group minerals (PGM) is bi-modal. Roughly two-thirds of the PGM are relatively coarse-grained, and often associated with fast floating copper and nickel sulphides. The remainder is ultra-fine, and locked in silicates, which poses a special challenge to the metallurgist. The previous mill typically recovered just the fast-floating mineralisation, but to achieve target recoveries, the new mill has to recover a substantial amount of the ultra-fine PGM. The metallurgical challenges associated with the recovery of fine-grained PGM in the talcous Lac des Iles ores, are described.The paper describes the approach used in circuit optimisation, and how metallurgical and operational optimisation raised palladium recoveries by more than 6% in six months, by tuning the circuit to recover some of the ultra-fine PGM mineralisation.BACKGROUNDThe Lac des Iles mine, owned and operated by North American Palladium Limited, is located about 115 kilometres north of Thunder Bay, Ontario. The mine originally opened in December 1993, and prior to 2001 included a mill capable of handling 2,400 tonnes per day of ore delivered from the nearby Roby pit.Following an intensive exploration programme conducted in 1999, and a detailed feasibility study, conducted in 2000, North American Palladium initiated a mine expansion project, the objective being to expand milling throughput from 2,400 tonnes per day to 15,000 tonnes per day. This required construction of an entirely new mill, which was commissioned in May 2001."

Aggressive driving patterns, rough and poorly maintained roads and pit floors, along with the occasional bump and poorly placed load from a shovel can create intense and sometimes serious vibration levels on a heavy hauler. The effects of high vibration have been shown to be of concern for the health of the operator as well as the reliability of the equipment. It is proposed that an onboard vibration warning system based on the ISO 2631-1 standard could be used to help operators reduce the vibration levels experienced in a heavy hauler. The onboard system would consist of a screen that displays the instantaneous vibration in the form of three lights: green (safe zone), yellow (cautious zone), and red (danger zone), as well as an overall vibration exposure or dose for the entire shift. With the utilization of the warning system, it is anticipated that the overall vibration levels will be decreased resulting in improved operator health, a reduction of vibration-induced maintenance, and improved haul roads through reduced impact loading and repair for localized trouble areas.

"Particulate ground calcium carbonate (GCC) is used as a filler and coating pigment in a wide range of applications including papers, paints, plastics and films. In this paper we will overview the requirements for GCC used in both filling and coating applications in the paper industry and highlight the processes used in the production of these materials.INTRODUCTIONCalcium carbonate is both abundant and very widely distributed occurring most commonly as limestone, marble and chalk (Harben 2002). Given, the high purity, whiteness and relative inertness of these materials it is not surprising that they are heavily utilised in a range of industrial applications. Worldwide ground calcium carbonate (GCC) capacity is estimated at 50.5 million tonnes per year (Roskill, 2002). This usage is divided between relatively coarse materials that are used in applications such as landscaping, cultured marble and carpet backing and finer grades that find application in plastics, rubbers, inks, paints and paper. Given the usage of calcium carbonate products across a very wide range of consumer products, the outlook for GCC is very promising with growth expected in many markets. Growth is anticipated across many applications in the emerging nations and more specifically in paper applications on a global basis.Over the last several decades the GCC processing industry has evolved to be well adapted to both the cost effective production and delivery of standard products and the production of high performance speciality products. Many of the standard unit operations found in the metaliferous raw material processing industry are also used, albeit in some cases in modified form, in the processing of GCC. Coarse products (diameter > 3 - 10 µm) are typically produced by dry processing routes. Whereas, the finer products are typically produced by a combination of wet and dry processing."

"Uranium mining and processing typically requires large quantities of high-grade reactive quicklime for the neutralization and clean-up of contaminated mine water and mill process waste streams. Currently the Saskatchewan uranium industry’s lime requirements are being supplied from deposits located in Manitoba and Alberta, resulting in transportation costs, which equal or exceed the market value of the product. During the summer of 2001, the northern village of Pinehouse located 220 kilometers south of the Key Lake uranium mill, staked two previously discovered limestone deposits. The relatively shallow deposits, known as Missi Island and Sleeping Giant are located in close proximity to one another, approximately 35 km south of Pinehouse adjacent to highway 914. This paper describes the results of a scoping study carried out by AMEC for the development of the two deposits based on a seasonal limestone mine and a continuous 40,000 to 60,000 tpy wood fired calcining plant designed to supply all of the quicklime needs of the Saskatchewan based uranium industry. Also described are the results of calcining and customer acceptance testwork on samples of lime prepared from recent Pinehouse limestone drill core. The potential benefits of the project include a significant new source of revenue for the community of Pinehouse, lower lime costs for the Saskatchewan uranium industry and employment for northerners in the mining, processing and wood harvesting operations.IntroductionInterest in the Pinehouse/Massinahigan River area for limestone was precipitated by the results of a 1977 industrial minerals drill hole program by the Saskatchewan Department of Mineral Resources. These results led to the acquisition of land in the area by Missi Island Mines Ltd who carried out extensive exploration during the period 1978-1982. They discovered a deposit on the southwest side of the Massinihigan River thought to contain approximately seven million tonnes of limestone with an average grade of 94.5% CaCO3. Missi Island carried out preliminary feasibility studies and prepared an Environmental Overview Statement. However, in spite of positive recommendations, the project was dropped in the mid 1980’s."

Improved product development, assessment methods and evaluation studies of materials for oil sands applications have traditionally focused on low and high stress abrasion and slurry erosion resistance mechanisms, because they were considered to be the predominant wear modes prevailing in oil sands mining, transportation and bitumen recovery. More recently with the very successful introduction of oil sands hydraulic transportation systems, there has been increasing use of crusher systems in which materials of construction are also required to have good toughness and gouging abrasion properties to withstand impact and the severe indentation and ploughing forces that are involved. To assess material property requirements for mitigating this additional wear mechanism, jaw crusher gouging abrasion tests using a modified ASTM G81 procedure, have been carried out on a range of wear materials of interest for oil sands mining service. The method involves a comparison of the wear losses that occur for reference and selected test plates when a controlled amount of standard feed rock is comminuted in a laboratory jaw crusher. Among the classes of material evaluated have been Q&T plate steels, austenitic manganese steel, chromium and chromium molybdenum white irons as plain castings and in laminated forms and also chromium carbide and tungsten carbide overlaid wear plates.

"BHP-Billiton’s Cannington mine in Northwest Queensland produces a silver-rich lead concentrate and a zinc concentrate. The plant has the capacity to treat 3.1 mta and for the year to June 2006 mean feed grade was 10.3% Pb, 461 g/t Ag and 3.7% Zn. Recovery losses of lead and silver are primarily in the fine fractions. In 2001, the plant was modified when it was determined that splitting the lead feed into two size fractions, and floating the two fractions separately increased fine lead and silver recovery. The fine lead fraction (called the split float) is 80% <16µm and about a quarter of the lead and silver is in the finest fractions. In 2006 to further improve lead and silver recovery a statistical plant trial of magnetic aggregation conditioning of the split float feed was undertaken. While pure galena is diamagnetic the Cannington galena contains iron within the galena mineral resulting in the galena having a paramagnetic, magnetic susceptibility. The trial demonstrated to greater than 98% statistical significance an increase in lead recovery, and to 99% statistical significance an increase in silver recovery, and to greater than 97% significance an increase in the lead in concentrate in the split float circuit. These economic recovery benefits with magnetic aggregation of the split float feed, has led to the incorporation of this technology in the plant.INTRODUCTIONThe BHP-Billiton owned Cannington silver, lead and zinc mine is located in the Australian state of Queensland about 800 kilometres west of the coastal city of Townsville. This is a pastoral area characterised by large cattle farms, low population density and very little infrastructure. The area has two seasons, a wet, hot summer and a dry, mild winter. Because of its isolation and lack of infrastructure the mine has always operated on a fly in fly out basis.Geological drilling defined the resource as 43.8 million tonnes grading 11.6% lead, 4.4% zinc and 538 ppm silver (Walters and Bailey, 1998). At times during its history Cannington has held the crown as the single largest lead and silver mine in the world (Torrisi and Smith 2003). Another unique characteristic of the operation’s history is the rapid progress from discovery to operation. The first drill to intersect the ore body was in 1990 and the mine and plant was commissioned in 1997."

The EKATI Diamond Mine has successfully completed the development and commissioning of the Panda Underground Project to extract the ore below the Panda open pit. The dominant kimberlite domain of the Panda Underground, intermixed olivine-rich and mud-rich resedimented volcaniclastic kimberlite (RVK), is very similar to the kimberlite domain characterizing the open pit portion of the pipe. A sublevel retreat mining method is in operation underground at Panda; near-vertical blast rings are drilled and blasted into an open void. Broken ore is mucked with load, haul and dump trucks (LHD?s), sized underground then moved to surface through a conveyor system to the process plant. An advanced feasibility study is in progress at the Koala Underground Project. The Koala pipe is geologically more complex than Panda. The pipe below the open pit is comprised of at least five distinct kimberlite domains. There is a 100 m thick zone of incompetent low-grade mud-rich RVK between the open pit and the stable high-grade olivine-rich primary volcaniclastic kimberlite where mining will be initiated. As a result, it is proposed that Koala will employ sublevel caving; each blast ring shot would be confined and mucked in sequence to maintain the cave of the over-lying low-grade RVK ore. The sublevel cave method seeks to safely defer the mucking of the low grade ore to the latter part of the mine life.

"This paper reviews the chemistry involved in the recovery of gold from cyanide solution with anion-exchange resins, and also discusses the most critical aspects of the engineering of an effective resin-in-pulp (RIP) process. As far as the chemistry is concerned, the conclusions reached by a great many researchers, as well as the performance of the only operating RIP plant in the Western World, at the Golden Jubilee Mine in South Africa, support the view that the process is technically viable and, in many cases, could prove to be more attractive economically than alternative processes such as zinc cementation and carbon-in-pulp (CIP). On the engineering side, there is still a need for further development before larger scale ( > 50,000 tpm) RIP plants can be designed, built and operated with confidence. However, the experiences gained during nearly 3 years of operation of the Golden Jublee RIP plant indicate that the process can be engineered with confidence for smaller operations ( < 50,000 tpm), and this will probably be the scope of application of the first-generation RIP plants. INTRODUCTIONThe use of anion-exchange resins in gold processing has, for a number of years, been proposed as an alternative to more conventional processes such as zinc cementation and carbon adsorption, and detailed research programs that have been carried out at a number of laboratories have demonstrated the technical viability of the process. (Burstall et al, 1953, Davison et al., 1960, Tataru, 1973, Laskorin et al. 1978, Hosking, 1984, Riveros and Cooper, 1987 and Palmer et al., 1988)The main incentive for this work was the fact that resins have several characteristics that are quite different from carbon, which make them potentially more attractive substrates for the recovery of gold. Sustainability of plant operations in a rapidly changing mining environment requires a well-trained workforce to ensure smooth running of operations. To ensure availability of trained labor, Mopani Copper Mines PLC set up a training facility in 2013. The school offers training in Engineering, Mining and Process. The engineering section enrolls grade 12 school leavers for artisan training. Mining section offers comprehensive safety induction program to employees and contractors to meet the Mopani zero tolerance accidents safety policy. The process training section offers advanced training programs for plant operating personnel and university graduates. The program includes needs analysis, theoretical metallurgical modules, practical plant training and e-learning modules. The school also offers assaying and sampling courses. All the above courses are extended to individuals and other mining houses outside Mopani wishing to have their personnel trained. The Mopani sustainable development academy ensures that contractors engaged on the Mopani sites are fully registered, comply with all relevant regulations and have undergone induction program before they can be allowed to work on the mine. INTRODUCTION “Sustainable operation of the mining industry requires a continuous supply of trained human resources” (Kapobe et al., 2018). The publication by the Asian Development Bank (2014) argued that there was a mismatch between the demand for high-level skills and the oversupply of low-level skills. Globally, the mining industry requires continued supply of skilled manpower for its complex operations and long term projects whose sustainability is absolutely necessary. Implementation of newer technologies in plant operations to ensure cost effective and efficient operations requires trained and skilled labor at various levels to handle ever-changing challenges. Dutz (2007:152–156) made three recommendations for Building Worker and Management Skills in India: Strengthen enterprise - based training. The government should help ensure that the benefits of in- service training are widely recognized by enterprises, while simultaneously providing strong financial incentives Improve vocational training - Vocational education and training systems have been unsuccessful in preparing graduates to meet market needs, particularly because of a lack of interaction with industry. Public and private vocational education and training providers should be strengthened to make them more responsive to industry demands. Curricula should be updated to reflect modern technologies. Strengthen business, management education, management of research and commercialization - business and management education should be strengthened through public-private partnerships. Innovative management courses should be introduced. Although these recommendations were made for India, they also apply to Zambia and other low and medium income nations.

"The CANMET SPOC project aims at inducing progress in process evaluation and optimization by developing user oriented software based on state-of-the-art theory. The present work is the result of a joint effort by CANMET, Noranda Mines and Université Laval to develop two computer packages: one (RTD) to calculate the residence time distribution that best describes the material transport through the mill, the other (FINDBS) to estimate the rate of breakage and distribution function of the population balance model in a ball mill. The RTD package can handle data from various experimental methods (impulse or complex tracer feed, with or without recycling, etc...). The FINDBS package provides options for the functional description oj both model parameters Band S. The full detail of the methods and programs appears in a users guide. The program capabilities and several sample runs are presented.IntroductionSimulation of mineral dressing operations by computer has been largely contained within academic and research circles and has not yet gained a status of routine practice in the ore and coal industries. It is however a matter of time before process simulators are available on every process engineer&apos;s desk to assist process optimization tasks, flowsheet design and professional training. The CANMET SPOC project (Simulated Processing of Ore and Coal) was initiated in 1980 to assist the Canadian industry in integrating computer-based methodology for process evaluation and optimization(1). Software development, documentation and transfer is one of the main priorities of the project which will mature in 1985 by releasing a complete package of manuals and programs covering sampling, material balance computation, unit modelling, flowsheet simulation and optimization . This paper is a condensed description of a typical project element in its 1982-1983 state of development. The required methodology for ball-mill modelling and simulation was consolidated an d merged to other project elements during a joint study under contract financed by CANMET and Noranda Mines Ltd . The first part of the study dealt with documenting experimental methods and software for ball-mill computer simulation. Université Laval GRAAIM (Goupe de Recherche en Automatistion Appliquée à l&apos;Industrie Minérale) acted as sub-contractor for this part of the study(16,17). A second part dealt with applying the model calibration techniques to a large industrial data base and is reported elsewhere(2,18,19)."

Operations and Maintenance departments have long had an adversarial relationship. The widespread evolution and adoption of modern management techniques such as Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) and Lean Production however has driven interest in working co-operatively to optimize overall plant performance. Mining and minerals operations have long adopted RCM in maintenance, and are now adopting Lean throughout the organization. Modern management initiatives like these explicitly call for co-operation between the two disciplines of maintenance and production and many advances have been made in the realms of people and methodology. One area that has lagged behind in supporting these developments however is information systems. Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) systems in maintenance and newer Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) in operations have not been truly integrated in the way needed. Complicated plants, different software architectures, continually changing conditions and many variables have lead to systems problems which have contributed to the maintenance/operations divide. Master data synchronization (the ?plant tree?) and integrated reporting of real-time data with transactional data are just two of the issues that are being solved by new approaches in information technology including web services and service orientated architectures. New technologies are coming on-stream to enable the final ?bridging of the gap?.

"In January 1983, Gibraltar Mines Ltd. started an exploratory program on Column Flotation with hopes of improving performance of the Molybdenum Cleaning circuit. The encouraging results led to a column test trial in the Bulk Copper Cleaner circuit where the test unit has per¬formed well. A program was undertaken to understand the mechanics of column operation. A year and a half later, Gibraltar is considering the replacement of existing Bulk Copper and Moly Cleaning flotation cells with a fully computer con¬trolled Column Flotation circuit.BRIEF SUMMARY OF TESTWORKInitial testwork was done with a home made 20 inch diameter x 31 foot high column, equipped with a doppler flow-meter at the tail line and automatic level conrol. This loop maintained constant level in the column by throttling the tail valve. This column was placed in a variety of locations around the Moly circuit as shown on Figure 1 a, b. Test re¬sults indicated that the column could achieve much higher grades than the conventional cells, but recovery wise, the performance was low. Spillages from overloaded pump boxes were a common frustration during this time.Column control strategy was reviewed; and, in light of information received from McGill University, changed to conform with the methods that had been employed by D. Wheeler, of the Column Co. of Canada4 and Gaspe Copper Mines3.The column was tested replacing a portion of the bank, figure lc. The results obtained were more or less equal to the circuit. However, as we had Nitrogen gas connected to the column and not the regular cells, the column was kept in service. With the use of Nitrogen in the column, the usual copper depressant, Sodium Cyanide could be replaced with Sodium Hydrosulphide, hence lower operating cost.As time went on, a 10 inch diameter column was added in series to re-treat the concentrate of the 20 inch diameter column with hopes that the copper content would decrease from 0.6% down to 0.3% in order to save on subsequent leach¬ing costs. So far, results indicate there has been some im-provement, hut we are not achieving 0.3% copper. (See figure 1d)."

Reliable estimation of in situ stress is a major step in the analysis and design of underground excavations in rock, particularly for evaluating the stability of underground structures to prevent failure or collapse. In the last ten years, the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) has studied and developed an AE stress measurement technique using orientated core named the WASM AE method. It allows the determination of a representative and detailed knowledge of the in situ stress field during the early stages of a project (such as mine feasibility studies), even in areas where development access is not yet available. The method has been used for in situ stress measurement at more than 80 mine sites worldwide with over 200 individual stress measurements carried out to date. This paper describes the sample collection, sample testing and reconciliation of results for very deep measurements carried out at the Craig-Onaping mine complex in Sudbury Canada. The results constitute the deepest measurements undertaken to date at the WA School of Mines and indicate that the main principal stress is horizontal and oriented parallel to a common regional sub trend in a NE/SW direction.
