IN every co al mine the hazard of fire in the underground workings is always present. This is a natural condition, because the mineral wrought and the supports normally used are themselves combustible and because underground fires may originate in many ways. The main causes of such fires are: (1) Open lights igniting gas, wood, or the coal itself. (2) Explosives igniting gas or coal. (3) Spontaneous combustion. (4) Electric sparks or short circuits igniting gas, wood, or coal. (5) Frictional heat igniting wood, coal, or oily material. (6) Explosions of gas or coal dust igniting wood or coal. The relative importance of these causes, and others less frequently met with, varies from district to district and depends to a great extent on the equipment and supplies used, on the training and discipline maintained among the workmen, and on the liability of the coal to heat spontaneously. It follows, therefore, that open lights should not be used and that, wherever there is the least possibility of methane being encountered, only locked safety lamps of an approved type should be allowed underground. It follows, also, that only 'permitted' explosives should be used and that the it use should be confined to conditions under which they are ?permitted?. Similarly, electric equipment should be of an approved type and all such stationary equipment should be housed in well-ventilated fireproof rooms. Such rooms, as well as entries to stables and oil houses, should be provided with doors which can be easily and tightly closed and which should be constructed of fireproof material.

PRACTICALLY all dusts derived from organic matter are explosive and instances are recorded of explosions-some of them extremely violent-having occurred in grain elevators and flour mills. While a discussion of the explosibility of dusts in general, doubtless, would be of more than academic value, it will be of greater interest, on this occasion, to consider various phases of the problems connected with the hazards arising from coal dust. Extensive and valuable research has been carried out during the past few decades on the subject of coal-dust explosions and a great part of this work has been concerned with the preventive effect of stone or other incombustible dusts. Four men have been outstanding in this very substantial achievement. The first is Dr. W. Galloway, who succeeded in demonstrating by experiments that one pound of coal dust mixed with 150 cu. ft. of air formed an explosive mixture. The next is Sir W. Garforth, who proved that stone dust is an effective preventive for coal-dust explosion. The third is G. Haon, and last but not least, L. G. Hill, both of whom laboured incessantly to produce a suitable stone-dust and a satisfactory method of application. Today, mining men all over the world are satisfied and convinced that stone dust, if properly applied, will prove effective in greatly minimizing, if not completely preventing, explosions of coal dust, as has been demonstrated in experimental mines, as well as in actual explosions, in practically every coal mining industry.

"The first printed report on Canada's coal resources was published in Paris in 1672(1. Written by Nicholas Denys, then Governor for France of Isle Royale (Cape Breton Island), the report dealt exclusively with the coal of the Atlantic region because little or nothing was known about the interior of North America. Clearly, also, he wrote about a resource of which much was known among the military and early settlers of that day. This early knowledge is not surprising because the presence of coal is clearly displayed in the coastal cliffs of Cape Breton as it was also, at a later date, to the first arrivals on Vancouver Island.An example of early use was that of the French garrison at Fort Louisburg in the first half of the 1700s. Still earlier, in 1643, Governor Winthrop of New England reported the receipt of a small ship load of coal from New Brunswick (2). Despite this early knowledge there was no significant development of coal mines until the 1800s. This had to await the ending of wars between the French and British factions and the growth of population. Basically, also, its development awaited the beginning of the Industrial Age. Organized coal mining began in Canada in 1825 with the formation of the General Mining Association. This British firm was the creation of a group of London jewellers which had been granted royal rights, by the British crown, to all minerals in Acadia (substantially the present Maritime Provinces). The Association took over a number of existing small mines and opened up larger operations in the Sydney coal field. Subsequently, it expanded to the mainland Nova Scotia fields at Stellarton and Springhill. The Association continued in existence as the major coal producer in Canada until 1899 when it sold its properties to the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Company, Limited (3). This Montreal-based firm managed the coal mines as a major Canadian producer of coal until 1968 when financial problems led to the expropriation of the mines by the Government of Canada. The federal government established the Cape Breton Development Corporation to operate the larger mines on Cape Breton Island. This Crown corporation continues to be a .major producer of coal in Canada."

This paper presents the beneficial effects of non-oxidative leaching of final and intermediate copper sulfide concentrates with sulfuric acid prior to the final cleaning stage of flotation. This unique process, combining leaching and flotation, appears to be advantageous for difficult-to-treat carbonate-bearing Polish copper ores, such as those processed in copper concentrators at KGHM Polish Copper. It was shown that after the chemical decomposition of about 70 % of the total carbonates naturally present in the flotation feed, a considerable enhancement of subsequent flotation results (both grade and recovery). The resulting products of non-oxidative leaching are solid hydrated calcium sulfate (gypsum), soluble magnesium sulfate and gaseous carbon dioxide. The beneficial effect established by the laboratory leaching tests was subsequently confirmed during a pilot plant operation treating final copper concentrate and a problematic intermediate concentrate at the Lubin concentrator.

At a meeting of the Montreal Branch of this Institute in the autumn of 1928, the Honorable J. E. Perrault, Minister of Mines for Quebec, announced his intention to enlarge the Bureau of Mines of Quebec by the addition of a Division of Geology. The announcement further stated that the geological work proposed should be begun in the following field season, and that it should be on a substantial scale of not less than six field parties. The announcement was received with enthusiasm and much encouragement was held out for the success of the effort. It has been thought that the present meeting would be a suitable occasion to present a report of progress of this Division for the three years that have since elapsed. History This, of course, is not the first geological work to be undertaken by the Bureau of Mines. Prior to the establishment of the Division of Geology, the Bureau of Mines had not been unmindful of the need of geological research, but it had always lacked the means necessary to any sustained work. For more than 25 years the late J. Obalski was the Superintendent and the sole occupant of the Bureau. Yet, even then, Obalski, besides routine visits to mining districts, made a few exploratory trips along the north shore of the St. Lawrence river and one to Chibougamau, but without the equipment necessary to effective results.

THE property of Cochenour Willans Gold Mines, Limited, is in Dome township, Red Lake area, northwestern Ontario, a hundred miles north of Kenora and close to the Manitoba border. 'Planes of Canadian Pacific Air Lines, Limited, serve the district daily, except Sundays, from Kenora, Ontario, and Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba, passengers being trans-ported from Winnipeg to Lac du Bonnet by car. Freight is handled by the Patricia Transportation Company. It is brought in from Hudson, Ontario, on the Canadian National railway, in summer by water and in winter by tractor trains over the frozen lakes. The first staking on the property was done during the 'rush' of 1926 and 1927 by William M. Cochenour, and on April 30th, 1928, a syndicate was formed, taking in claims of W. M. Cochenour and Dan Willans and H. G. Young. Surface trenching was carried on almost continuously until 1934. In October, 1932, Ventures Limited took an option on the property, and in December of that year they carried out an extensive diamond drilling programme, but considering the results did not justify further work, they relinquished the option. In July, 1934, further surface work was carried out under the supervision of W. P. Mackle and, on the strength of his report, Noah Timmins Incorporated took an option on the property and agreed to make an initial expenditure of $100,000 on development work. This was carried out under the direction of Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines and included the sinking of a shaft to a depth of 165 feet, establishment of a level at the 150-foot horizon, and some 1,900 lineal feet of drifting and cross-cutting. The results obtained from this work were not considered of sufficient promise and the option was terminated in August, 1935. Mr. Cochenour then approached Alex Mackenzie and associates, and the present Company, Cochenour Willans Gold Mines, Limited, was organized on April 9th, 1936, and sufficient money was raised to continue operations. Under the direction of W. P. Mackle, the shaft was deepened and a second level was established at the 275-foot horizon; but, due to several adverse reports by outside engineers, it was found impossible to raise sufficient money to carry on the work and operations were suspended in December, 1937. In January, 1939, an agreement was entered into with Gold Eagle Gold Mines for the milling in their plant of some Cochenour ore. A total of 4,959 tons was treated, and the results were so encouraging that further finances were raised by C. A. Gentles & Company, of Toronto. Following further development in the mine, it was decided to erect a mill. Construction was started on September 1st and the mill was turned over on November 29th. The first gold brick was poured on December 23rd.

DURING the past year, the writer has investigated the treatment of a variety of British Columbia tungsten-bearing ores. Much of the test-work described in this paper was carried out in collaboration with Mr. A. G. Lyle in association with the British Columbia War Metals Research Board at the University of British Columbia. The remainder was completed in the laboratories of the Department of Mines at Victoria. Two mills in the Province are at present treating tungsten ores. Descriptions of these are included through the co-operation of Messrs. S. Gray (1) and A. A. Almstrom (2). MINERALOGY, OCCURRENCE, AND SPECIFICATIONS In the present paper, attention is directed solely to scheclite, inasmuch as known occurrences of other tungstcn minerals in British Columbia are of mineralogical interest only. "The paper begins with a brief account of the naturarly occurring resources of gypsum and anhydrite and a discussion of their relative value and utility as sources of sulphur. The fundamental chemistry of recovering sul-phur values from calcium sulphate is discussed. (a) Thermal decomposition -discussed as impracticable; (b) Reduction to calcium sulphide; (i) Total Reduction-The chemistry is outlined and the Dorr-Oliver and Bureau of Mines processes mentioned. The Elcor process is mentioned and certain deductions made from available information.(ii) Partial Reduction-This is stated as the basis of the only proven process, namely ""The Cement -Sulphuric Acid Process."" The possibility of recovering lime is mentioned as an aside, but dismissed for lack of commercial application. The history of the cement -sulphuric acid process is covered briefly and a list of plants in commercial operation included. A brief elementary account of the basic chemistry of cement production is followed by a discussion on raw materials and fuels. A short account of the flow scheme of a typical plant, with notes on the operating peculiarities, precedes an account of product quality. The latest developments which enable by-product gypsum to be used as a raw material are discussed, with an indication of how the flow scheme is modified. A statement of feasible plant capacities is followed by requirements of raw materials, services, labour, etc., and finally some indication is given of capital costs."

Introduction The operations of The Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company, L1mited, have always been concerned with the mining of low-grade copper ores. In the fifty years of this Company's existence, nearly 60,000,000 tons of such material has been successfully mined and treated. During these years, many changes in mining practice took place. However, at Copper Mountain, due to the large tonnages of very low grade material, it was realized that something more than changing mining methods would have to take place if these low-grade orebodies were to be mined at a profit and the Company and. its employees enjoy many years of successful operation and employment. Production costs were mounting commensurately with rising taxes and the increasing cost of supplies, labour, freight, and smelting, while the value of the product on the market was not increasing in price to compensate for the higher costs of production. A survey of the mineable ore in 1944 indicated that, of the 12,000,000 tons in the reserves, only 3,500,000 tons was now profitable ore. This reduction in the commercial ore reserves was a serious matter, as it meant that the mine had only two years of life at the profitable shipp1ng rate of 4,800 tons per day. Further, the location in the mine of the orebodies making up the 3,500,000 tons was not suitable for such high production.

In July 2012, Hatch Ltd. and Air Products & Chemicals Inc. completed construction and commissioning of a 4000 tpd O2 cryogenic air separation unit (ASU) for Barrick Gold’s Pueblo Viejo Project located in central Dominican Republic. The ASU produces high pressure gaseous oxygen, which is used for the oxidation of refractory sulphide ore within the pressure oxidation (POX) circuit. As a result of the project’s remote location and tropical climate, many challenges were faced over the course of construction, commissioning and start-up of the ASU. These challenges included adequate preservation of equipment due to dusty and humid site conditions, final assembly and erection of the cryogenic distillation columns on site, limited spare parts inventory/availability, and an unfinished power source for plant commissioning. This paper discusses the steps taken by Hatch and Air Products to successfully design, construct, commission and start up the largest stand-alone ASU plant for a POX application in the metallurgical industry.

Chemical modelling is becoming increasingly useful in the development, analysis, design, and control of hydrometallurgical processes. The paper presents the development of reliable databases for chemical modelling of selected hydrometallurgical systems using state-of-the-art software, such as OLI. The modelling strategies are also demonstrated. The high pressure acid leaching (HP AL) of laterites, oxygen solubility in the oxidative leaching process of zinc sulfide, gypsum solubility and lead chemistry in mixed sulfate-chloride solutions are presented as case studies. This on-going work attempts to bridge the gap between theoretical research and industry needs. "A new sensor cannot be considered in isolation from the process in which it is utilized. This paper, describing an on-stream particle size analyzer, therefore gives considerable emphasis to the slurry handling techniques employed to ensure that the instrument is presented with a representative sample. A new sampler is described, which continuously abstracts a small, representative sample from a closed pipeline containing a flowing slurry. This sample is then diluted, thoroughly mixed and pumped to a head tank, from where a continuous stream is fed at a constant rate to the size analyzer. Data are presented to show that particle size segregation is minimal throughout this sampling and sample preparation. A continuous particle size analyzer based on a separation principle is described, and the basic parameters of size distributions, and how they relate to this particular instrument, are considered. Typical results are given. An electronic system is presented which accepts the basic sensor outputs, and converts these to a particle size signal suitable for process control. Finally, the use of an inplant computer to process the sensor signals to obtain a particle size signal is briefly considered."

"Pure cadmium sulphide was leached by the action of the bacterium Thiobacillus thiooxidans in the presence of finely divided sulphur. The influence of time, temperature, pH and concentration of inoculum on the extent of the cadmium extraction was studied. Under optimum conditions, up to 72 per cent of the cadmium could be dissolved over a six-week period. A cursory study of the role played by elemental sulphur seems to indicate that its presence is essential but that the sul1>huric acid produced through its oxidation is a minor factor in the cadmium extraction."

Introduction Following the discovery of high-grade deposits of pitchblende in the Great Bear Lake area of the Northwest Territories by Mr. Gilbert LaBine in May, 1930, samples were submitted to the Mines Branch for examination and investigation as to suitable methods of treatment (1). The purpose of this paper is to present, briefly, the results of the investigative work conducted on the ores and an outline of the methods developed for the extraction of the radium content and recovery of the by-products. The paper is presented in two parts. Part I gives a review of the history of radium production and of the principal processes used in other countries. Part II describes the work and gives the results of the Mines Branch investigation. Part 1-Radium Production In Other Countries Historical Outline Uranium was discovered in 1789, and more than a century later Madame Curie, while studying the physical properties of this element, observed that the ore of uranium exhibited greater activity than the pure uranium com-pounds she had prepared and traced the cause to the presence of a new element which she named radium. Eventually, research proved radium to be a disintegration product of uranium, and always present in uranium ores.

"In the context of today's continuously changing world, there are many factors which must be considered when attempting to assess the ability of Canada's primary copper producers to remain competitive in the face of increasing competition in world markets. In this paper, we have attempted to document those factors that will have the greatest impact on the future viability of Canada's copper industry, and to suggest possible strategies to fully utilize whatever inherent advantages Canada may have to enhance its competitive position. Technological factors related to the efficiency of precious and by-product metals recovery, energy type and utilization efficiency, production and sale of sulphur by-products, and control of 502 emissions are given high priority in this evaluation of Canada's future needs to remain competitive. Particular emphasis is placed on assessing the relative viability of hydrometallurgical versus pyrometallurgical processes for copper; to address uniquely Canadian conditions and problems. Due consideration is also given to the economic incentives required to allow Canada's copper producers to compete under anticipated world market conditions and to facilitate the continued development of Canada's copper resources. IntroductionWhen we try to assess the viability or competitiveness of any industry the bottom line is still usually, ""Can we produce a pound of product cheaper than the competition?"" Canada's copper industry is certainly no exception. However, as with most resource-based industries dependent upon exports, there are many factors which have a significant effect on the cost components which make up the total cost of producing and selling a pound of copper. It is desirable therefore to have as clear a picture as possible of the cost components, the major factors affecting them, and how they compare with the competition, particularly the third-world copper producers.In this paper we have attempted to provide a brief outlook for world copper markets and a brief overview of Canada's competitive position. We have also attempted to document those factors which will have the greatest impact on future production costs, and have suggested possible initiatives to utilize inherent Canadian advantages to enhance our competitive position. Special emphasis has been placed on technological initiatives designed to make full use of these ""advantages"", to develop superior beneficiation and extraction! refining technologies. The Ilo Smelter Modernization Project will require treating the slag from the Peirce Smith converters in Slag Cleaning Furnaces using pig iron technology. Currently the slags from the converters show variable magnetite contents. The copper contained in this slag is recovered in Reverberatory Furnaces, where the smelting rate was improved due to the high silica content of the converter slag. Preliminary industrial tests where developed to clean the slag from converters using pig iron. The results showed that the magnetite content has a significant influence in this process. This work describes the actions that are being implemented in the converter operation to control the magnetite content in the slag in order to maintain the high copper recovery of the smelter when the new facilities are commissioned. This task will demand a strong control of both the slag chemistry and converter practices in order to get the copper recovery considered as the design criteria (~97.4%).

FIELD PARTIES of the Geological Survey of Canada have, in recent years, mapped several areas east and northeast of Flin Flon (9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 118) (1). In all these areas the mineral deposits show a close geographical relation to faults although the immediate control of most of the known ore deposits appears to be folded structures in the rocks (8, 11, 18, 19). Air photographs and published geological maps were studied in order to ascertain whether or not the mineral deposits in the Flin Flon-Snow Lake mineral belt as a whole show any spatial relationship to faults. It was found that most of them do show a distinct geographical association with faults, or with topographic features that may be faults. It is further apparent on air photographs that a major lineament, for composite of lineaments, follows approximately the contact between gneisses and schists of the Kisseynew complex on the north, and Amisk volcanic rocks on the south. However, this Kisseynew lineament is not continuous and, especially in the eastern half of the district, it is exceedingly irregular in plan. Parts of this lineament have been mapped as faults (9, 10, 12, 14), other parts have been shown as stratigraphic contacts (1, 2, 21, 27), and still other parts have not been studied except by reconnaissance methods. It is suggested that the Kisseynew lineament may be due to a deformed fault that extends easterly from a point about 25 miles west-northwest of Flin Flon to a point at least 10 miles northeast of Wekusko lake and that the mineral deposits.

"This paper traces the development of Ontario 's cap lamp standard. Over the years, numerous Coroner's Juries investigating fatal mine accidents have made recommendations with respect to underground lighting. As well, recommendations to improve mine lighting have been made by two Commissions, investigating mine safety in Ontario.During the past few years, the performance of any cap lamp worn by miners involved in serious accidents, have been measured by the Mining Heal/h and Safety Branch. Large variations in light output were found between and among cap lamp types. These variations have been attributed to the lack of quality control on the bulbs, design of the cap lamp head piece and in some cases, poor maintenance.In 1986, a series of underground tests were conducted to establish the minimum light output from cap lamps required to visually identify loose ground. The results of these tests indicated that a cap lamp should produce a minimum peak illuminance of 1500 lux measured at 1.2 metres from the light source. On May 30, 1987, Ontario became the first province in Canada to legislate the minimum amount of light required to visually assess ground conditions. INTRODUCTIONPoor lighting has been identified as a factor which can contribute to mining accidents. Over the past decade, several Coroner's Juries as a result of inquests into mining fatalities, have recommended improved lighting in mines.The Joint Federal-Provincial Inquiry Commission into Safety of Mines and Mining Plants in Ontario, was appointed to report upon the adequacy of existing arrangements and practice s that may affect safety. This Commission completed their report in April 1981, and recommended that inadequate lighting be investigated as a possible cause of all reportable underground accidents, and that a comprehensive research programinto mine lighting be undertaken.In response to the first recommendation, the Mining Health and Safety Branch of the Ministry of Labour, hereafter referred to as the Branch, initiated a program to measure lighting levels in all fatal accident investigations where inadequate lighting was a possible factor."

"The Athabasca region forms part of the Churchill province of the Canadian Shield and is underlain by an Archean or Aphebian assemblage of rocks that underwent severe metamorphism and granitization during the Hudsonian orogeny (1750-1950 m.y. ago). In places, the eroded orogen is overlain by unmetamorphosed cover rocks (in-cluding the Martin and Athabasca formations) of probable Paleohelikian age. Basic dykes cut all the rocks of the region.There are innumerable vein-type pitchblende deposits and many syngenetic occurrences of uraninite in crystalline basement rocks. Evidence is presented to show that pitch-blende was emplaced during the final stages of the Hud-sonian granitization and followed the crystallization of syngenetic uraninite transitionally. In terms of P-T condi-tions, the pitchblende deposits belong essentially to Lindgren's mesothermal group.Based on the postulated uranium metallogenesis, the possibilities of finding further deposits of pitchblende and other types of uranium deposits are discussed."

"The current American ""energy crisis"", occurring in the midst of a global debate on the adequacy of mineral supplies to support present and projected levels of world consumption, has focused attention on Canada as a major world producer of minerals. Exports of minerals account for approximately one-third of Canadian foreign earnings; more than half of these exports are to the United States. Although the United States is a net importer of most industrially important metals, with the exception of nickel and zinc, only a small part of American mineral imports are from Canada; these imports are minerals for which geographical proximity and strategic considerations are important. In the short-term, Canada is more dependent on her exports to the U.S. than America is on imports from Canada. It is argued that Canada, far from indulging in economic nationalism to preserve her resources, should expand her exports while the markets are available."
