Two innovative ground reinforcement products have been developed for use in the mining industry. One of these products is a high strength polyethylene (HOPE) bar for use as a rib bolt in underground coal mining and as a corrosion proof tendon in open pit mines. The other product is a cable bolt (Ultrastrand) which demonstrates enhanced load transfer and is available in continuous lengths. Ultrastrand's exceptional in- situ performance and versatility makes it ideal for mechanised installation in both underground and surface mining operations. Details of these products are presented and results from labortaory and field trials are discussed.

Exploration for uranium in Australia commenced only during the 1940s, but in this short period has been very successful as one third of the world's low cost uranium reserves have been discovered in Australia. Total uranium exploration expenditure in Australia up to the end of 1983 was $A(1983) 554 million; this discovered 20 potentially economic deposits and official reserves of 560 000 tonnes of uranium oxide at an average cost of $1 per kg of U 0 . An exponential 8 eserves indicates distribution of uranium r that there could be 54 undiscovered uranium deposits in Australia, each with reserves of 20 000 tonnes U308 or more, in addition to smaller deposits. Using a constant uranium price of $A(1983) 79 per kg, no deposit is economic at a grade below 0.12 per cent U 08 or with reserves of less than 3 000 tonnes. Selecting deposits with reserves of 5 000 tonnes U 0g or more as prime exploration targets, only 39 per cent of discoveries will yield a real internal rate of return (IRR) of 10 per cent or more. After committing a minimum exploration budget of $10 million to this search, an explorer has one chance between 7 and 12 of discovering a deposit that will repay the exploration investment.

This paper compares different results for overburden volume estimation assisted by geoestatistics, particularly using kriging methods. The main goal is to obtain the most reliable digital terrain model for the calculation of the overburden volume. The data was collected on an irregularly spaced grid and interpolated values were calculated to provide a denser, more regular data set before volume estimation. The field work was developed at the Butia-Leste Coal Mine, southern most Brazil, where an accurate survey was done using a total station theodolite with electronic data collector. The study was developed in five main steps: data acquisition, exploratory data analysis, spatial continuity measurements, point and block kriging estimation and verification of the results. Data acquisition was carried out on a 5 x 5 in grid. This dense grid provides an exhaustive data set of the real terrain against which data subsets can be compared for the various interpolation procedures and volume calculation. This provides an interesting insight into the influence of the number of data on the estimation error. Univariate statistics were used to compare each data subset and the exhaustive dataset. Ordinary kriging on the data subsets followed by contouring was carried out using Geoeas and Surfer software respectively. A subroutine written in C provided the link between the files generated in Geoeas and subsequent contouring routines embedded into the Surfer package. Omnidirectional and directional variograms were modelled defining the parameters for kriging estimation using Geoeas. Different variogram models were checked through cross validation prior to kriging. A comparison between the magnitude of the differences in volumes calculated with the different DTMs was attained. These final result indicates the sensitivity of the volume obtained to the number of data points. As the number of data points increases the estimation error decreases, but at some point there is no significant decrease in the final volume with the collection of additional data.

The CSIRO Division of Mineral and Process Engineering in Melbourne has been developing on-stream analysis sensors based on neutron and gamma radiation for better control of quality and process operations. This has resulted in the development of Ironscan, an on-stream analyser that measures the iron content of both lump and fine iron ore on conveyor belts. It can be mounted under existing conveyors with minimal modifications to the conveyor structure and can cope with steel cables in the belt. An interface gauge and an on-stream coal ash analyser have also been developed, both based on measurement of natural radioactivity. The interface gauge monitors the interface between liquor and mud in thickeners and washers, provided the natural radioactivity of the mud is sufficiently high to detect it above background. The natural-gamma ash gauge is a valuable addition to the Coalscan range of ash gauges. It is applicable to heavily laden coal conveyors or bins where the coal bed thickness exceeds 30 cm, and also to lightly laden conveyors, provided the coal is profiled on the conveyor.

Alternative processes for converting coal to liquid products and their stage of development are outlined. The merits of hydrogenationprocesses in general, and the solvent refined coal process in particular, are stressed. Bench scale experimental hydrogenation procedures used by the Australian Coal Industry Research Laboratories Ltd. (ACIRL) to study the liquefaction of Australian coals and correlations between properties of such coals and their conversion to liquid products are described. Factors involved in assessing investment and operating costs for modern hydrogenation based coal refineries of different capacities are described with reference to a recent study undertaken in N.S.W. The significance of coal properties such as yield and yield structure of total liquid products and how they and other factors can influence the economics of the coal refining operations are discussed.

Whether it be steel for our bridges, cement and aggregate for our concrete, coal for our power stations, copper for our wire, phosphate for our fertiliser or gold for our jewellery it first must he found, then mined and processed before we can use it. There is no other way.

There is no other effective way for study ing firedamp and coaldust explosions than to produce controlled explosions in a pre-monitor- ed environment - either mine openings kept for the purpose, or special surface galleries. Such explosion testing facilities have been employed historically at Buxton in U.K., with lesser known installations at Bruceton, U.S.A., Tremonia, West Germany, Katowice-Mikolow, Poland and elsewhere. Both firedamp and coal dust explosions are studied. Normally coal dust explosions are initiated by somewhat standardised methane air mixtures, by explosives, or purely by coal dust. Various structures and suppression installations are installed in roadways and galleries prior to explosion to simulate destruction and suppression, and the results of such tests form the basis of suppression installations, especially stone dust barriers and water barriers. Other data collected from these experiments include rev- ersals of explosion waves, pressures and temperatures and duration of explosion waves, analyses of aftergases etc. Other uses of explosion testing galleries include testing of explosives, electrical equipment and frictional . sparking.

The gas drainage characteristics of two seams, the Bowen at Bowen No. 2 Colliery, Collinsville, and the Gemini at Leichhardt Colliery, Blackwater, are assessed. Single borehole tests and drainage panels were studied by underground monitoring of pressures and gas flows. Permeability was found to be effected by cleat to an order of magnitude. Other structural features are shown to be important. In this context, the need for delineation of no-flow zone locations in boreholes is shown to be of great importance where in-seam pre-drainage is being used for outburst control. Water in the seams strongly influences permeability causing gas flows to fluctuate with time. Use is made of modified reservoir engineering techniques to analyse the drainage characteristics of seams.

Aberfoyle has been applying computer methods to mine geology in small to medium-sized underground mines since the early 1980's. Recently, the installation of DATAMINE software at the Hellyer Mine in Tasmania has allowed development of computerised applications which assist both mine geologists and mine planning engineers on a daily basis.Comprehensive data is entered into a database prior to survey coordinating to produce a processed database which can be accessed for construction of a variety of plots. The folded and faulted nature of the orebody contacts at Hellyer has necessitated the use of the structure contour method to provide a complete 3-D spatial interpretation. Computer-generated contact intersection points are hand-contoured before digitising and wireframing as a digital terrain model. This wireframe model can be sectioned in any plane for mine planning.

The difficulty in creating and obtaining a competitive edge in the mineral industry is rapidly increasing. The Kiruna Iron Ore Mine in the far north of Sweden is currently thriving on the world market through firm managerial strategy. LKAB believes in upgrading its raw material to produce a high quality iron ore product for sale to steelworks throughout the world. It is vital that this product is also of uniform quality and quantity to provide quality assurance to customers. The first link in meeting these product requirements starts in the underground workings. Mining methods and operations are of large-scale. Automation and continuous production streamline operations and reduce operating costs. These factors have built Kiruna Iron Ore Mine into the world's biggest, most modern, underground iron ore mine. To remain competitive on the world market, LKAB relies heavily on research and development. The mine is currently in a phase of upgrading its operations. A 25-tonne Toro electric loader is being tested to improve the rate of output of ore from the mine. Long hole drills are being improved to increase accuracy and efficiency. An electronic detonating system will improve detonator delay precision. Projects are underway to better understand ore flow mechanisms from a caving orebody. Benefits include improved ore recovery along with better rock quality control at the caving front. The continued updating of mining operations at Kiruna will enable LKAB to continue to maintain its competitive advantage on the world market in the production of high quality iron ore products.

The ash content of coal can be determined using radioisotope X-ray techniques. A number of overseas applications of X-ray techniques are described; however these suffer from the disadvantage of either not compensating for iron variations or, if compensation is used, using X-rays of low penetration with consequent sampling difficulties. Current Australian Atomic Energy Commiss- ion (AAEC) research on X-ray techniques is aimed at overcoming the limitations of these methods. The AAEC method involves making measurements proportional to mass absorption coefficients of X-rays in coal at two energies. Calculations and experiments with X-rays up to 35 keV have shown that ash content can be determined to about 1 wt.%. This work is being extended to higher X-ray energies to enable the technique to be used directly on a conveyor belt or in a hopper. Neutron techniques can be used to measure the concentration of specific elements such as carbon, hydrogen and silicon in coal. Their con- centration is correlated to the coal parameters of interest. Methods of moisture determination based on hydrogen measurement and ash determina- tion based on silicon and aluminium measurement are described. Namakwa Sands is a mineral processing company based on the West Coast of South Africa and is solely owned by Exxaro Resources Limited. Mineral ore is mined and processed, concentrated and both chemical and mechanically upgraded before being sent for electrostatic and magnetic separation units. The final high value mineral products report as Zircon, Rutile and Ilmenite.The recovery of non-magnetic material is largely dependent upon a number of factors, including but not limited to dew point, ambient temperature, feed rate, mineral size distribution, specific gravity and mineral content in head feed. One important limiting factor to recovery in typical dry mill operations is the particle size distribution of the feed. Variance in the particle size has catastrophic consequences for recovery. This is the reason for this study. Until recently large variances in non-magnetic production were viewed to be a function of machine operation. This view was later rejected with the feed size distribution determined as the major driver of low recoveries, for Namakwa Sands orebody 50 per cent variance in particle size distribution can be noticed within one day. This is because of the successive mining blending techniques employed.The predicament is that the two modes were so closely placed together that recovery of a single mode is almost impossible without the consequence of greatly reducing recovery. The second mode was found at 125 µm while the first was at 90 µm. Interestingly, for the mentioned feed type a cumulative size distribution of a unimodal feed type is almost exactly the same as for a bimodal size distribution. Thus a plot of cumulative size distribution will show no difference due to the modes being so close together. This is the reason why this phenomenon was not noticed before.The study also found that, using an high tension roll (HTR) or rare earth roll, a fine stream with a single mode at 90 µm versus a coarse stream with a single mode at 150 µm would yield completely different results interms of yields. Larger conductive particles are thrown from the roll while small particles loose charge faster (entrainment). Results in terms of the bimodal size distribution show that even though 25 per cent of the feed type is greater than 150 µm the yields followed a similar pattern to that of the coarse particles rather than that of the majority (75 per cent) fine particles. This confirms what was published by M Ziemski and P N Holtham in 2005 on charge decay rates; they mentioned that particle bed effects played a major role in recovery.

The bulk flotation behaviour of an industrial rougher bank has been determined with a view to characterising the size iepend ent behaviour of the identifiable nineral groups present. A relatively simple flotation model, based on first order kinetics and the assumption of perfect mixers in series ias been used to provide a fit to the operation of the cells. The adequacy of the model is discussed in relation to the characteristics of the ore and the size iependancy of the parameters. It is shown that improved fits are possible if the model accounts explicitly for this size dependancy and demonstrated how the model may be of use in prediction of the grade recovery relationships for different operating conditions as an aid to plant optimisation.

Spiral concentrators are used globally in the fine coal processing industry to segregate particles, by gravitation, on the basis of density and size. Consisting of an open trough that twists vertically downwards about a central axis, a slurry mix of particles and water is fed to the top of the concentrator. Particles are then separated radially as they gravitate downward. Since their introduction to Australia in the 1940's, the generic design has evolved largely by laboratory trial-and-error investigations of different prototypes. However, this approach has proven expensive and optimal designs have not been necessarily developed. Accordingly, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis has been used recently as an alternative method of investigation, to assume as is envisaged, a role in the design process. To date, CFD models have progressed to simulations of turbulent fluid flow on current production spiral designs, and are continuing to be adapted for inclusion of particles at realistic feed concentrations. To be able to use the models confidently however, laboratory experiments must also be performed to validate the predictions during the development stage. This paper reports the current findings of an ongoing CFD and experimental program applied to one spiral unit. Satisfactory quantitative agreement has been achieved for the fluid and particulate flow characteristics, and although further validations are appropriate, the model already possesses significant potential for use as a reliable predictive design tool.

The ever increasing demand on land use has led to large areas of land being considered for development, which because of past mining activities are covered by substantial depths of fill materials. This paper examines the problem faced with the development of land infilled with open cast mining backfill, in predicting the behaviour of the fill upon development. To be able to design foundations suitable to withstand the movements that occur within open cast backfills or design a backfilling operation that produces land suitable for a proposed after development, a means of predicting backfill settlement is required. Factors critical to this prediction are the timing of backfilling operations, the compactive state of the backfill and the inundation of the backfill. The analysis of a considerable quantity of data collected from the monitoring of backfilling operations and backfill movement at a range of open cast coal sites located within the UK has given the authors a better understanding of how open cast backfills behave in terms of long-term creep settlement, collapse settlement and how these are effected by backfill scheduling. This knowledge has been encoded into a program running under Microsoft Windows that enables a user to make settlement predictions for a point, a given section or area or for the whole site. Differential settlements, critical to any development design, can also be determined between any two points taking into consideration the heterogeneous nature of open cast backfills. The program was tested with data from an open cast coal site in the UK. Compaction monitoring during the placement of the backfill material enabled a model of the backfill to be constructed taking into account backfill properties and scheduling. This model, taken as input into the program, enabled future backfill settlement predictions to be made. A comparison is given between these results and actual settlements obtained from a short-term settlement monitoring scheme.

Existing practical laboratory tests for comparative strength determination of commercial explosives consist of the lead block test, the ballistic mortar test, the bubble test etc. These tests are carried out in material with quite different properties compared to rock. The theoretical performance potentials of commercial explosives are traditionally described by weight-strength (WS). Some explosive producers use the Langefors formula for weight-strength calculation, where also the gas volume is considered. Neither the theoretical nor the practical methods for determination of explosive performance such as the above, give good enough prediction of fragmentation and heave in rock blasting. For these reasons a project was started for the purpose of finding a small scale test method which predicts how different explosive parameters affect fragmentation and heave. Small scale tests were carried out by using 50 cm cubical blocks, mainly of concrete, but a few also of rock. All blocks were blasted in a steel cylinder with a diameter of 1.2 meters. The velocity of detonation was monitored, and the velocity of fragments was derived from their time of arrival at the steel wall, which was registered by accelerometers. After blasting all fragments were screened. The charge diameter was 22 mm and the amount of explosive 78 grammes, resulting in a specific charge of 0.62 kg/m3. Explosive properties such as energy, gas, VOD and density were systematically changed.The results presented in this paper show how fragmentation and heave systematically change when the explosive properties like energy, gas, VOD and density are systematically changed. The results from the small scale tests are compared to full scale tests carried out in tunnel blasting, and during summer 1990 also in bench blasting.

Although the terms "pipe" and "tube" are normally considered synonymous, a distinction is often drawn, the former term being applied to the hot finished product and the latter to cold finished material. It is, considered that the title of this paper includes hot finished seamless, and continuous-weld pipe, cold drawn seamless tubing, and electrically welded tubing.The continuous-weld process will be reviewed first, passing to the various methods of seamless manufacturing, which, in addition to meeting the demand for hot finished seamless pipe, also supply the raw material for cold drawn tubing, the manufacture of which will then be described. With the continuing demand for industrialisation and urbanisation, the rate of mining and processing lower grade ores will also increase, producing large quantities of waste. As extreme weather events associated with global climatic changes are to be expected, the risk from mine tailings management will also increase (Edraki et al., 2014). In sulfide rich tailings, weathering within the critical zone controls the fate and distribution of the contaminants such as copper, zinc, and lead in the environment (Hayes et al., 2014). Tailings evolve geochemically and physically with time as they age under the influence of complex interacting factors. Understanding of the complex interactions between these controlling factors is important for predicting and mitigating the potential risks associated with sulfide tailings such as generation of acid mine drainage (Lindsay et al., 2015). Wetting and drying initiates weathering processes, influencing the hydrological, geochemical and geomechanical properties of the tailings. In semi-arid climates where evaporation exceeds precipitation, salts may precipitate within the pore system as well as on the tailings surface. These salts become the temporal sink of heavy metals until the next episodic rainfall (Nordstrom, 2011, Grover et al., 2016). Therefore, using kinetic and static test to describe the trajectory of these material evolutions without considering the complex interactions could potentially lead to erroneous prediction. The sampling of non-ferrous concentrates from trucks and trains has long been carried out either manually or by automatic spears. Very little use has been made of conventional sampling systems for sampling concentrates at transfer points, or cross-belt samplers for sampling from the belt as the concentrate moves along the conveyor.Due to the high value of base metal concentrates and the often extremely heterogeneous nature of the material it is imperative that the sampling procedures adopted are accurate and precise. The basic principle that all particles in the stream have an equal opportunity to be included in the final sample is not fulfilled by accepted traditional concentrate sampling procedures such as the spearing of wagons, trucks or streams. This may lead to significant bias being introduced into the final sample.Consequently, the application of correct sampling procedures, either with conventional cross-stream samplers or the newer cross-belt samplers, is of prime importance.SGS Australia has recently installed a number of cross-belt samplers for the sampling of base metal concentrates both in Australia and overseas. The application of these samplers will be discussed with emphasis on the benefits of their use.
