When I was first asked to give a paper on work-life balance in the mining industry I was both excited and aware of the incongruity of my position. I have never worked in mining operations nor have I had any experience that approximates the on-site lifestyle. IÆm not really an adventurer or a traveller, I prefer writing and research to hands-on activities and IÆve never worked further than twenty minutes away from home. The perspective I offer is thus largely an objective one. I say largely since I grew up in a family where my parents work arrangements involved long-distance commuting; my dad continues to work FIFO at a coalmine in Blackwater until this day. Perhaps my tortoise-like existence is a rebellion against his flighty movements. The analysis I will be presenting today draws together a variety of sources, from member anecdotes and research on FIFO and work-life balance to the popular philosophy writings of a bald Englishman with a French name. I am speaking of the famous writer, Alain de Botton, whose television show æThe Consolations of PhilosophyÆ you may have seen on the ABC. Work-life balance is a term that gets a lot of mileage in corporate brochures and at breakfast seminars. But like many terms that get bandied around in the human resources circuit, from æteam synergyÆ to æperformance optimisationÆ, I am frequently perplexed as to what it actually means. Corporate websites are at pains to emphasise the high priority that they place on the needs of the whole person. Yet in terms of substantive content, a commitment to work-life balance often seems to translate into little more than the option to take a few morning yoga classes in exchange for working a seventy-hour week. As extended work hours have taken their toll, leading to high attrition of professionals across all industries, employers are increasingly expending resources to discover just what lies behind this buzz word. The challenge for companies is to find meaningful strategies to help employees better integrate different aspects of their lives in a new era of work, as employees are sending the message that they are not willing to play work, social life and leisure off against each other in a zero sum game.

Flash flotation is a process designed to remove coarse, liberated, fast floating minerals from hydrocyclone underflow. Irrespective of liberation, coarse particles would normally remain in a grinding circuit until they are reground fine enough to report to the hydrocyclone overflow. Additionally, minerals of high density also report to hydrocyclone underflow despite being fine in size and/or liberated because hydrocyclones separate on the characteristics of both particle size and density. Dense particles continually reporting to the hydrocyclone underflow can lead to over-grinding and the production of ultra fine particles. These particles exhibit slow flotation kinetics and thus are difficult to float in conventional flotation circuits. Therefore, removing coarse, liberated particles from the hydrocylcone underflow by flash flotation has the potential to improve recovery and can improve dewatering unit operations and reduce grinding costs.The impact on the overall performance of the flotation circuit by removing coarse, fast floating minerals prior to conventional flotation is not well understood. Ultimately, predicting the overall recovery improvement provides the justification for the installation of a flash flotation cell within the milling circuit. The acid mine drainage (AMD) situation at three opencast collieries in the Witbank Coalfield, South Africa, was evaluated from different perspectives. Twenty-seven test pits were dug into the spoils of these collieries to characterise the in situ conditions of spoils of varying age. Detailed static testing was done on surrounding drill holes and additional samples were taken from the test pits. Selected samples were tested using different techniques, namely ABA, mineralogy and kinetic tests. Groundwater monitoring boreholes from the areas surrounding these spoils were also used for characterisation. The ABA results compared favourably with the in situ determinations; acidic test pits proved to be potentially acid-generating from ABA, even when the samples had neutral paste pH. Kinetic test results showed these samples to yield low pH leachate over the test period. In several of these results, the theoretical depletion of neutralising potential and the onset of acidity were well matched. NAG pH-values and final observed water chemistry corresponded for the cells predicted by ABA to acidify, but compared poorly in cells that did not acidify. Results from the non-acidic spoils were consistent with the in situ observations. Alternative kinetic test methodologies were also employed. Duplicate samples were tested in humidity cells and in aerated trays that were manually wetted on a regular basis. Results from these tests showed an excellent correlation. Detailed mineralogical determinations using XRD and XRF were used for comparison to the ABA and, in some cases, humidity cell results. These comparisons show that the ABA results are consistent with the results expected from the mineralogy. The conclusion from these assessments is that ABA, in most cases, provides information that can be correlated to the field, mineralogy and to humidity cells. The use of multiple techniques leads to a higher degree of confidence in the use of the data.

Middle and Late Cenozoic fluvial conglomerates and gravel in northeastern Southland record the transport of alluvial gold from Central Otago into Southland, and subsequent reworking and concentration of this gold into economic placer deposits. A corridor of geochemically distinctive, Hg-free gold derived ultimately from veins in Torlesse Terrane schist in Otago extends through the Caples Terrane and into Southland. The initial repository in Southland was fluvial sediment of the East Southland Group, specifically weakly auriferous, quartzose delta plain strata of the Gore Lignite Measures (GLM), a downstream equivalent of Dunstan Formation in Central Otago. Miocene uplift along the northwest trending Old Man Range beheaded the parent river system, isolating GLM from its Central Otago source area and establishing the proto-Waikaia River system. Rising topography between Otago and Southland increased fluvial gradients, and initiated erosion of cover strata and a sequence of tectonically induced gold recycling events. Auriferous GLM were recycled from the hinterland into broad braided fluvial channel and floodplain deposits of the Waikaia Group (new), specifically the highly auriferous Waikaka Quartz Gravels and equivalent Waimumu Quartz Gravels downstream (WQG), superimposing more proximal depositional environments over parts of the former GLM delta plain. WQG were deformed, and locally cannibalised during the later stages of their deposition by reverse movement on north-northeast trending faults of the Dunsdale System (NW side up). Increased tempo of uplift in the hinterland (Old Man, Garvie, Umbrella, and Blue Mountain Ranges) in the Pliocene and early Quaternary resulted in further reworking of GLM and WkQG from the hinterland as well as basement erosion. Progressively more basement-rich detritus was deposited as a locally auriferous piedmont (Gore Piedmont Gravels - GPG) over earlier channel and delta plain (GLM, WQG) strata, extending from the Blue Mountains to Waikaia, and southward through the Gore Gap to beyond Mataura. Southward propagation of the north-northeast trending ranges, local warping, and uplift of the Murihiku Terrane in Pliocene and Quaternary progressively deflected GPG fluvial systems and ultimately constrained them to the present valleys. Pre-existing auriferous strata (GLM, WQG, GPG) were reworked and deposited with or without basement detritus as these fluvial systems migrated toward their present positions. Auriferous remnants of these transitional deposits are preserved in local structural depressions on the uplifted blocks that deflected the systems (eg King Solomon Mine), and on locally abandoned floodplain segments on the lowlands (Pebbly Hills-Gore Gap). The present drainage has continued to incise and cannibalise its own and earlier deposits during late Pleistocene-Recent uplift to form confined channel placers within the present valleys.

The Bentley underground mine, which is located 60km north of Leonora, Western Australia, is owned and operated by Round Oak Minerals Pty Limited. A high-grade Zn-Cu Volcanogenic Massive Sulphide (VMS) orebody, Bentley was discovered in 2008 with production commencing in 2012. Long-hole open stoping is employed to mine the steeply dipping ore body, and in recent years the Avoca method has been adopted. This requires all development in a particular area of the mine to be completed prior to stoping commencing in a bottom up sequence. Voids are commonly backfilled with loose Run-of-Mine (ROM) waste loose rockfill (LRF); or alternatively cemented rockfill (CRF) can be used. Stopes in the 3860 AOS and 3900 AOS panels were located below previously extracted Avoca zones, with LRF situated immediately above them. These high-grade stopes were originally designed with rib and sill pillars to maintain control of the existing backfill during extraction. Due to changing factors over time, including mining economics, alternative options to achieve full extraction of the stopes were reviewed, including: • Mining small successive full height stopes which would involve drawing a blanket of LRF down with the extracted ore (stoping under waste); • Stabilisation of the existing LRF above the stopes and implementing a primary/secondary stoping sequence, with the primary stopes backfilled using a cement fill. An assessment of these options was undertaken which determined that the second full extraction method was the most beneficial to the operation, and could be achieved using a cement grout (Minova’s FB200 grout) to stabilise the LRF in conjunction with implementing a sequence where the primary stopes would be backfilled with cemented aggregate fill (CAF). Footwall drives were developed adjacent to the rockfilled stopes, allowing for the installation of horizontal grouting conduits, as well as providing access to the top of the planned 3860 and 3900 level stopes for the placement of CAF. An interval at the base of the previously rockfilled stopes was grouted at multiple horizons to achieve the required thickness, with a comprehensive quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) process undertaken. Primary stopes were CAF backfilled via an arrangement of downhole winzes, linking the top of primary stopes to cross-cuts developed off the associated footwall drives. CAF was delivered underground through an open reticulation network that was extended to the specific levels. Overall the successful implementation of the revised mining method effectively increased ore recovery while maintaining control of overbreak and dilution, providing significant financial upside. This was achieved while maintaining effective controls in light of the changes to the risk profile. Stabilisation of the existing rockfill has allowed the extraction of stopes to full height, including the originally designed sill pillars, representing an average 23% increase in ore tonnes on the initial design, with dilution from the stope crowns averaging less than 1%. The use of CAF in association with primary/secondary stoping, eliminating the need for rib pillars, has yielded an average 47% increase in ore tonnes compared to the base case mine design.

Several new techniques. which may be applied with advantage to the search for uranium are described. Scintillation type gamma spectrometers are now available for airborne', ground and borehole use. These can distinguish in a broad way between anomalies due to uranium, thorium and potassium. Gamma spectrometers based on semiconductor detectors now under development should be capable of much greater resolution. These should also make possible rapid, accurate and cheap radiometric analyses of samples containing uranium and/or thorium, whether in radioactive equilibrium or not. Another valuable prospecting aid, particularly in areas of tropical leaching, is systematic sampling of soil for radon content. Equip- ment for this purpose is currently available and it will be possible to extend the method when development of an alpha probe suitable for use in deeper holes is completed. Variations in the concentration of certain trace elements'in soil (e.g. mercury) also offer promise in the search for mineralized zones which may contain economic eon¦- centrations of uranium.

Aitik, a Boliden owned and operated open pit mine located in northern Sweden, will expand production from 18 Mt per year today to 36 Mt per year copper ore during 2010. The challenge for the mine operation is to double production with a planned increase of the shovel and truck fleet of only 50 per cent. This will be achieved through improved shovel and truck utilisation and productivity. In early 2005 Aitik started projects to enhance the utilisation of truck engine hours and to reduce fuel consumption. Both projects were successful, within a year efficient2 utilisation of engine hours increased from 60 per cent to 75 per cent and fuel consumption was reduced by six to eight per cent. The truck utilisation project focused on minimising idle truck hours by for example four operators on three trucks thus reducing idle engine hours to minimise lost time for breaks and shift changes. Other measures included focusing on improved dispatch usage, parking trucks when overtrucked, etc. Eco-driving was a project together with Swedish Road Administration with the objective to combine economical and environmental savings. To keep the focus on eco-driving a reward was set up for the shift team with the lowest fuel rate over rolling 15 weeks periods. Both activities included a comprehensive training program for mine foremen, dispatchers and truck operators focusing on efficient use of trucks from economic driving to optimised truck dispatching and minimising idle engine hours. Online monitoring of trucks activities and fuel consumption combined with continuous reporting gave shift foremen and management a tool to discuss and follow trends and individual shift team performance. The combination of close monitoring of mainly organisational practices and operator training resulted in significant productivity increase and lower operating costs without any capital investments.

Spiral concentrators are gravity based separation devices used for the preparation of coal, iron and heavy mineral ores (Wills, 1992). Gravity concentration remains the main separation method for fine iron ore and is used extensively for treating many minerals. Gravity concentration methods separate minerals of different specific gravity by their relative movement in response to gravity and one or more other forces, the latter often being the resistance to motion offered by a viscous fluid such as water or air (Wills, 2006).The main operating variables for a spiral concentrator are the feed rate, the slurry concentration, the wash water addition and the position of the splitters used to separate the tailings, middlings and concentrate streams (Sadeghi, Bazin and Renaud, 2014). Wash water is an important control variable used to wash away entrapped light minerals from the concentrate stream (Burt, 1984; Bouchard, 2001). Sadeghi et al concluded the spiral operation to be sensitive to the wash water flow addition and resultant economic trade-off. Increasing the wash water flow rate increases the concentrate grade at the expense of the iron recovery.The paper addresses the effects of dripping wash water onto the concentrate stream of a spiral processing fine iron ore. The dripping wash water system offers a low flow alternative and could possibly provide a good balance between grade and recovery of valuable minerals without using excessive water. The Multotec SC20HC/7 WW spiral was used for the experimental test work. The spiral was tested at varying solids concentrations; the wash water rate and the splitter positions were kept constant.The use of wash water at 30 per cent, 35 per cent and 40 per cent solid concentration improved the Fe grade in the concentrate by about 1.5 per cent, six per cent and eight per cent respectively. The additional SiO2 rejected by the wash water is approximately three per cent, nine per cent, and 11 per cent at 30 per cent, 35 per cent and 40 per cent solid concentration respectively. Addition of wash water is shown to have minimum effect on grade at 30 per cent solid concentration, and Fe upgrades obtained with and without wash water were found to be similar. Notable upgrades were observed at 35 and 40 per cent solid concentration with wash water. The results obtained suggest that the additional SiO2 rejection by wash water increases with an increase in solid concentration. This suggests that the benefit of using the drip system is notable at higher solid concentration. It is believed that at lower solid concentration SiO2 particles are reasonably free to move around and are possibly less entrapped than at high solid concentration.The Fe grade/recovery and solid concentration relationship with wash water showed a non-linear correlation. The Fe grade increases with an increase in solid concentration up to a somewhat optimum point and then drops as solid concentration increases further. The recovery of Fe on the other hand follows a converse relationship with solid concentration, the recovery decreases from 30 per cent to 35 per cent solid concentration and then increases again at 40 per cent solid concentration. The increase in recovery at higher solid concentration could possibly be explained by the fact that the mass yield to concentrate also increases with solid concentration. Since recovery is a function of both grade and mass yield, the higher recovery at 40 per cent solid concentration is likely due to the high mass yield obtainable at 40 per cent solid concentration.The drip system could therefore possibly offer a safe guarding against grade and solid concentration variations without using excessive water, and possibly ensure that a product within specification is maintained.CITATION:Ramotsabi, C M, Erasmus, W and Bornman, F, 2015. Ore sorting has the potential to reduce the feed to wet plants and in the case of complex orebodies that can significantly reduce the water, energy and reagent consumptions and resulting operating costs for the project. The application of ore sorters has sparked renewed interest and application in the precious and base metals mining industry in recent years as a result of the continuing development of new sensing technology and very fast information processing that is making ore sorters applicable to a much wider range of ores and larger scale operations. The application of ore sorters involves a range of trade-off decisions that have economic impact upon the benefits of ores sorting to the project under consideration. Avoca Resources LimitedÆs Higginsville Gold Project has a resource base of over 1 300 000 oz of gold. The Trident underground mine, which forms the basis of the project development, has a resource base of 927 000 oz of gold. Avoca is building the Higginsville Gold Project based on a minimum ten year vision, producing over 150 000 oz per annum. The project development has taken less than three years from the Trident discovery hole in October 2004 to the first ore production in June 2007. This paper discusses the background work associated with the development of the Trident underground mine in a difficult period for new project development in Western Australia. The resources boom, led by the iron ore industry in the Western Australian Pilbara region, is creating cost pressures and, combined with a lack of people and equipment, is placing cost and timing stress on a small developing project. Avoca Resources has developed a project execution management strategy aimed at mitigating cost blow outs and schedule delays.

Flotation surveying can be an extremely powerful means of determining opportunities for circuit optimisation and benchmarking. The type of survey employed depends heavily on the nature of the information required from the survey. It follows then that the type of survey determines the type of samples required; however, regardless of the type, the success or failure of a survey is often dependent on the correct used of appropriate sampling techniques at each sampling point. For a successful flotation plant survey it is vital that the correct samples be collected at the correct time in respect to the feed and each other. This paper discusses the current best practice sampling methods used in flotation surveying and discusses in detail the ideal sample masses based on theoretical analysis. Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited have recently commissioned a 14 Megawatt power station adjacent to its underground coal mining operation at Appin NSW. The power station is fuelled by methane gas extracted from the coal seams 500 metres below the surface. The methane is compressed and cooled prior to its injection into the combustor of a single shaft gas turbine. The turbine is coupled through a reduction gearbox to an alternator. There is sufficient power generated to cover colliery load, with any excess being exported to Prospect County Council, which is the supply authority for the south western region of Sydney.

"In order to effectively predict the roof collapse of underground openings using continuum models, it is imperative that a realistic failure criterion is used to represent the rock mass. However, for coal mining operations, there is still uncertainty as to the appropriate failure criterion that should be used for the coal measure strata. This study compares stability numbers and collapse mechanisms for a rectangular underground opening predicted based on three commonly used failure criteria: the standard Mohr-Coulomb, Mohr-Coulomb with a tension cut-off and Hoek-Brown. Three methods of analysis are considered: an analytical upper bound method an upper and lower bound finite element formulation the displacement finite element method.The theoretical results are also compared with field measurements of subsidence above longwall coal mining. For the standard Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, the friction angle governs the shape of the collapse mechanism, and the so-called critical width (the cavity width above which failures extend to the ground surface) ascertained from field observations in the New South Wales coalfields corresponds to a friction angle of approximately 30°. On the other hand, predictions obtained based on the Hoek-Brown failure criterion consistently overestimate the critical width. The aim of this paper is to summarise all known Phanerozoic ooidal ironstone deposits worldwide, including Australian deposits such as the well-known channel iron deposits (CID). Nearly 400 occurrences have been catalogued based on stratigraphy, geographical coordinates, facies, grade, tonnage and iron bearing ore minerals. The description also includes details on the geochemistry, genetic models and main references. Brief statistical analysis provides an overview of the variation between these deposits. This compilation offers a basis for better understanding of the ooidal ironstone deposits and a global evaluation of this important resource worldwide.

Unplanned dilution directly adds cost to production from mining, milling, tailings disposal and administration. Additionally, unplanned dilution decreases the productivity, profitability and may affect the planned life of mine. Identifying and quantifying the potential for unplanned dilution allows optimisation of the mining plan and mining practices to minimise the adverse impact on productivity and the cost of production. The Dilution Rating System (DRS) has been developed to more accurately predict dilution thickness and the variable potential for dilution, from individual stopes to life of mine planning. The DRS utilises the methodology developed for the Mining Rock Mass Model (Seymour et al 2007, Jenkins et al 2009) to generate a three-dimensional dilution rating model, which is then calibrated against stoping performance. Dilution can be predicted more accurately and the parameters affecting dilution can be determined and minimised through improved mining techniques, for example blasting and ground support design. Potential high dilution areas can be identified in the planning stages of the mine and systems put in place to mitigate the risk of excessive dilution. This paper presents the methodology used to develop the DRS and then successfully predict dilution for both the hangingwall and footwall of stopes at the Gara Gold Mine. This has enabled the expected dilution to be more accurately predicted and mitigated where possible thus reducing unplanned dilution.

The Beta Hunt orebody is situated on the south western limb of the Kambalda dome. It is one of the nickel occurrences in the area which fall into the category of æKambalda Style OrebodiesÆ. These orebodies are renowned as being continuous uniformly mineralised ribbons of nickel sulfide mineralisation. Interestingly, Beta Hunt does not conform to this notion of continuity and uniformity and is in fact highly irregular in its ore distribution due largely to the influence of post depositional structure. In an attempt to understand the ore distribution at delineation stage rather than development stage a detailed footwall topography model is created using all available drilling data. To augment this drilling data, the routine use of downhole EM and borehole radar has been introduced to provide data beyond the confines of the drill core to enhance the geological interpretation of the footwall topography and the distribution of the mineralisation. The implementation of a detailed footwall model and the use of downhole geophysics has proved to be very effective in resolving the orebody complexity issues. Ongoing development of the methods used will continue to refine the interpretation of the geology to enable more efficient extraction of the orebody.

Direct relationships between rock texture and BWi (grindability index) have been established based on geological and metallurgical information supported by optical microscopy observations, gathered from 731 samples.Each recognised rock texture is observed to be related to a certain BWi range and, this texture is also characteristic of distinct lithological subunits (recognisable at mapping scale). Therefore, this relationship may provide an important tool for early milling in situ estimation.Since each textural type is a response to rock formation conditions, the causality of the relationship between BWi and texture is based on such conditions and, particularly, on the interfacial free energy among its components.According to the abovementioned textural features, the greater the free interfacial energy between mineral components, the greater the necessary energy required to break its grain boundaries and, consequently, the greater the necessary energy required for milling.If the textural evidence indicates that the rock was able to adjust the shape and/or size of its components – in a natural tendency of all systems to minimise energy– then the necessary energy required to break its grain boundaries will be lower.

Dense medium separation (DMS) is one of several preconcentration methods used for early waste rejection from run-of-mine ores at relatively coarse particle sizes prior to additional milling and beneficiation. DMS has been used extensively in the coal, diamonds, mineral sands, base metals and iron ore industries to produce either a final product or as a preconcentration step. Laboratory scale and pilot test work at the Met-Solve laboratory in Canada has demonstrated successful separation and upgrading of other minerals such as lead, zinc, copper and lithium based ores using DMS.This paper reviews historical dense media systems, results from the pilot-scale multi-stage DMS Separator “Condor” system, as well as production plants and associated laboratory heavy liquid separation (HLS) test work on various minerals. The mineral systems tested included a lithium bearing ore and a fluorspar ore. Other minerals were tested but are not reported in this paper.Pilot plant test work on a fluorspar ore showed that 41.6% of the mass could be rejected to the tailings stream while 95.3% of the CaF2 was recoverable to the product stream. On a spodumene sample that was tested, it was possible to reject 55% of the mass to tailings while recovering over 90% of the lithium.In recent market conditions and with the decreasing grades in existing ores, preconcentration should be a consideration to maximise the value of certain operations.CITATION:Lundt, M and Grewal, I, 2017. Macraes Mine is a large-scale open-cut and underground gold mine located in Central Otago, on the South Island of New Zealand. This paper presents the role of geological mapping in the grade control process at Macraes Open Pit as a case study, and demonstrates how systematic geological mapping can add significant value to the mining cycle. Geological mapping has proved to be a valuable foundation for orebody interpretation and analysis.Practical applications and lessons learnt are summarised, including predictive control of the orebody, improvement of geotechnical modelling, and identification of further exploration targets.

One of the main factors affecting the suitability of an ore for autogenous grinding is the ore’s competency, ie providing enough critical stones for the grinding process. Several experimental test routines exist and are used for assessing the viability of the ore for autogenous grinding. However, very little attention is given to the generation of fatigue in large stones experiencing repeated shocks in the mill. To investigate this, large pebbles sampled from an industrial autogenous grinding mill running hard and soft ores were categorised based on the grinding energy. From the pebbles, small drill core samples were prepared and went through a series of fatigue cycle tests. Both hard and soft ores showed similar average resistance to failure in compression tests, but the hard ore had a consistent resistance with lower variations. The cores were scanned by XCT before and in-between fatigue tests at the highest reachable resolution, 1.5 µm voxel size. The outcome showed that a higher number of micro-cracks were visible in the soft ore compared to the hard ore. The frequency of micro-crack development in the soft ore may be the reason for its lower specific grinding energy compared to the hard ore. It is obvious that for realistic conditions in an autogenous grinding mill, stones are pre-weakened by fatigue before they fracture. Therefore, shortcut methods focusing only on running tests on fresh and small samples may operate in unrealistic conditions by ignoring the fatigue phenomenon. This is even more important for ores that are on the borderline to be considered as competent for autogenous milling.
