This paper describes the laboratory study implemented to investigate the application of the subaerial technique to tailings disposal for the proposed Olympic Dam Mine. The results of the study and the resulting design parameters are presented. The subaerial technique of tailings disposal is described and the advantages of the method for disposal in arid climates highlighted.

The quality of a photointerpreter's anno- tation of an image may be displayed by writing maps in which the pixels are shaded according to the number of times a pixel was seen to be on a feature. The map of grey tones is more valuable, if, for each grey level, a measure of quality is determined, which is the probability that a feature exists in a pixel of a given grey tone. From repeated annotations (at least four) of the same image by a single observer, it is possible to formulate a perception model which describes stochastic processes in the observer. From that model, it is possible to assign estimates of data quality for each observer to each grey tone. For two observers on the same scene, the 'mean' method of quantifying the grey levels is to assign a value equal to the mean of the ii,:lities for each of the two observers separately. For this example, the grey tones arr thus quantified at probability levels of 0.70, 0.80, 0.90 and 0.95.

A field trial of the prompt neutron-gamma SIROLOG technique was undertaken by the CSIRO - Division of Geomechanics at Callide Coalfields during July 1989. The trial investigated whether the sonde could reliably be used for the determination of Ash and Iron Oxide (Fe2O3) in coal seams, which had a highly variable iron content. Ten boreholes were logged, being water filled of a nominal diameter of 120 mm. The logging probe employed a 1.6 ¦g 252Cf neutron source and a 51 x 51 mm BGO detector. The source to detector distance was 15 cm. The results from one exploration borehole at the Dunn Creek Mine are discussed in the paper. The rms deviations for ash and iron determination between the neutron-capture predictions of the geophysical logs and the laboratory - chemical assays were 1.9 per cent Ash and 0.88 per cent Fe respectively. Using existing empirical equations which relate iron oxide concentration in coal ash to Initial Deformation Temperature (reducing conditions) at Callide, it may be possible to indirectly determine ash fusion properties as least as accurately, on a more detailed ply-by-ply basis, and more cost competitively than current laboratory techniques allow.

Blast Engineers frequently use the terminology "the blast showed good heave", or even "the heave was better this time". It is reasonably obvious that "good" and "better" are not the best terms to use. It is also noted that any variation in the data can be misleading. The author proposes a more precisely defined and objective set of measures as tried and tested in a project in 1988. Simple objective measurements of a muck pile profile can measure 1. distance thrown 2. spread of material 3. heaping of material 4. skewness, or bias in the heaping 5. rotation of the mass This technique enables one to compare the profiles from different blasts without relying on subjective experience or judgement. Simple, artificial profiles will be presented to illustrate the problems of description; and then application of the measurement techniques to these profies will be discussed with physical interpretations. The mathematical techniques will be presented, and results of the application of the techniques to real data collected during research carried out at Baimsdale in Victoria, will be presented as illustration. The use of these techniques in mathematical modelling will be discussed.

"In the last decade Afitex developed the Draintube™ geocomposite, which provides simultaneous drainage and waterproofing functions. This new type of drain tubes planar geocomposites (DTPG) differs from other geocomposites as the drainage core is composed of multiple corrugated and perforated pipes instead of biaxial or triaxial nets. It is furthermore associated with needle-punch stitched layers of non-woven geotextiles, which act either as capillary mediums or as filters.In this paper, the structure of the Draintube™ drainage composite is presented along with its key properties and the drainage mechanism associated with its particular structure.The relevance of this kind of structure is then reviewed based on past and current laboratory bench evaluations and field installations for mining applications such as the covering of acid rock drainage (ARD) tailings for the Central Manitoba Mine (Canada) site-rehabilitation; and as a pregnant solution collection layer in heap leach pads.Some of the demonstrated critical advantages of Draintube™ in the mining industry are as follows: reduction of the thickness, hence lower volume of granular drain layers improvement of fluid and gas collection and reduction of the hydraulic load reduction of secondary collector network mechanical protection of the sealing membrane fast and economical installation of interlifts stability under extreme conditions (compression, temperature, pH) increased stability of entire covering system and reinforcement of protection of dykes filtration of the covered material customised drainage positive connection of the geocomposite to collector pipes enable leaks detection (using a conductive textile layer) with an electrical test.CITATION:Saunier, P, Ameglio, L and Durkheim, Y, 2015. A reliable scale-up procedure for column flotation must address three important areas of column design, ie column geometry, sparging system and wash water distribution network. The column geometry is dictated by the maximum froth carrying capacity (which determines column diameter) and the bubble-particle attachment rate and particle retention time (which determines column length). The most important factor in the scale-up of an air sparging system is the ability to produce small bubbles in both laboratory and full-scale columns. Other factors, such as energy consumption and maintenance requirements, should also be considered in the scale-up of bubble generators. It is also important to design a wash water distribution system that can properly control the froth stability and maximise the column throughput. Based on these criteria, a successful scale-up example is given.

Sunrise Dam Gold Mine is a large open pit mine 730 km NE of Perth, Western Australia. Contract mining commenced in the open pit in September 1996 in lake clays and saprolites with the first fresh rock mined late 1999, and the underground starting the first decline in October 2003. By May 2007, over 150 million cubic metres of material had been mined and the pit was 360 m deep with 80 m remaining before reaching the planned final depth in early 2008. A final cut-back in the northwest will commence in late 2007 with open pit mining in the Mega Pit expected to conclude in late 2010. The challenges of developing the pit can be divided into three phases:Soft materials û mining was in multiple staged pits and cut-backs in lake clays, saprolites, weathered material. The varying characteristics had a significant impact on mining methods and slope stability. Structural û mining was gradually exposing more fresh rock and the drive was to understand how major structures and lithological contacts impact on local and large-scale stability. This had a significant influence on mine design and scheduling. Slope angles û achieving the final slope angle is critical. This is done through application of high standards of final wall establishment and proactive geotechnical hazard identification and management. This includes dealing with the rapid rate of descent, interaction with underground excavations and managing rock fall risk. The paper discusses each of these phases, highlighting the geotechnical controls implemented to date, looking at their success and impact on mining.

In stratigraphic orebodies, estimation of footwall and hangingwall location is often of more importance than grade estimation. Contoured grade estimates often produce smeared boundaries and the use of accumulations and thicknesses as variables re-introduces the original problem: location of the point at which the estimate is to be made. The paper introduces statistical and geostatistical techniques for the solution of the problem and illustrates the techniques with a case study from Mount Isa, one of the world's largest producing silver-lead-zinc deposits. Solutions for calculating variograms in orebodies of variable dip, strike and plunge are presented together with relative variograms for individual metals, metal accumulation and orebody thickness. Optimal methods for hangingwall and footwall location are introduced and illustrated with an example. Orebody boundaries are then kriged after which individual metal grades are kriged within the estimated boundaries. The boundary estimates are compared with manually interpreted boundaries and known boundaries in mined-out areas. Grade and tonnage estimates are compared in mined-out areas.

Silver and gold bearing ore from the Troy Resources NL Casposo Gold-Silver Project, located within the San Juan Province of Argentina contains a complex mix of gold, silver, electrum and silver sulphides in the ore. Casposo is a typical low sulphidation epithermal style gold–silver deposit where mineralisation is hosted within rhyolite – andesite flows and breccias. Veins are typically banded quartz–chalcedony colloform - crustiform banded with quartz - carbonate infill. Mineralisation is associated with an assemblage consisting of quartz, chalcedony, adularia, calcite, illite, sericite and trace sulphides. Gold and silver occur as electrum, native silver, sulfosalts and silver sulphides. This paper presents a case study that describes the process selection, development and engineering of a tailored process plant for the recovery of gold and silver from this ore.The original feasibility study, modelling, metallurgical testwork and engineering studies are outlined. The final flowsheet was based on minimising capital cost, operability, recovery and minimising technical risk.The process flowsheet uses the traditional Merrill Crowe route because of the high silver to gold ratio in the feed and achieves maximum gold and silver recovery while providing a common facility for future ore body treatment.

Rotary kilns have been in service in the gold industry to regenerate carbon for 65 years. At the time oxide ores with gold head grades of 8 to 10 g/t were being treated. Carbon could be regenerated adequately at 650°C and solution losses were less than 1%. Forty years ago, research indicated that heavily fouled carbon from flotation circuits had to be held at 750 to 850°C for ten to twenty minutes for full reactivation (Avraamides and La Brooy, 1987), gold head grades were typically 5 g/t and solution losses typically 0.02 ppm – still less than 1%. In 2017 it was determined (Claflin et al., 2017) that a residence time of less than 1 minute at 750°C can be adequate to reactivate carbon fouled with organics sufficiently to achieve 0.005 ppm solution losses in a flotation tailings leach plant.With the potential for discovery head grades to drop below 0.6 g/t, solution losses of 0.02 ppm represent over 3% loss. Tight operation of the whole carbon circuit is required to keep gold solution losses below 1% going forward.There are alternatives to a rotary carbon kiln, e.g. vertical kilns of which the Minfurn, Rintoul and Combustion Air kilns are examples. The alternative kilns can be heated using electrical heating elements, induction, and microwave. These kilns can operate successfully under the right conditions, however, they are almost exclusively for small carbon throughputs and are not suitable for the large carbon advance rates that are required to process low head grade ore deposits. Large throughput carbon kilns are are almost exclusively fossil fuel fired rotary kilns and the subject of this paper. In the view of the principal author, a fossil fuel fired vertical carbon kiln is preferred to a rotary kiln, however, it is not currently used in the industry.Thermal regeneration of activated carbon has a major impact on gold recovery in the carbon circuit. The carbon kiln and associated equipment constitute 3 to 5% of the capital cost for an oxide processing plant and up to 10% of the capital cost if flotation tails are leached. Despite the capital cost and impact on recovery, the carbon kiln is often poorly selected, operated and maintained.Six years ago Ausenco embarked on the Carbon Kiln Initiative to reduce solution gold losses. This body of knowledge has been published in a series of papers culminating in this paper on how to:1. Select a kiln appropriate for the flowsheet;2. Polycrystalline diamond compacts (PDC) have been widely used as cutting elements in the drilling tools for the oil, gas, civil and mining industries because of their faster penetration rates and longer bit life. US Department of Energy reports that PDC bits account for more than one-third of the total footage drilled worldwide (US Department of Energy, 2004). However, non-thermally-stable diamond composites (NTSDC) have seldom been applied to geothermal drilling, since premature failures of such PDC cutters have been observed in hard rock formations. Several factors need to be considered to prevent premature failure of cutters and improve cutting performance when using PDC-based bits and other rock cutting tools. The first set of factors consists of the strength, density, stiffness, toughness and thermal resistance of the PDC and the rock. A second set relates to the complex behaviour of the bonding between the PDC cutter and the bit matrix, or the pick and the pick holder, which is vital in maintaining stable, reliable and durable adhesion of the cutters to their hubs. Finally, based on a better understanding of the cutting processes, the formulation of a predictive model would assist in further development of cutter design.

Peak Gold Mine is a new gold and base metal mining project being developed by Enterprise Metals (a 100 per cent subsidiary of CRA) at Cobar in the centre of New South Wales. The Cobar district has a long history of copper and gold mining operations stretching back to the 1870s. Extensive gold and base metal mineralisation was discovered at the Peak in 1981 below a series of gold mines which had been active around the turn of the century. Evaluation of the deposit through the 1980s led to CRA's decision to develop the project for production at a capacity of 450 000 tonnes per annum in late 1992. The project has been developed with a green fields approach despite the long history of mining in the local area. This approach has lead to several innovative ideas being trialed at the site which are expected to result in the operation being a low cost producer of gold and base metals.

A review is given of progress made to- wards the development of personal gravimetric dust sampling for risk assessment on South African gold mines. The present strategy is critically examined on the basis of principles for assessing health hazard from dust exposure. Reasons are advanced for replacing the konimeter with a gravimetric system based on full shift personal sampling. Constraints imposed by local characteristics of gold mines are used to illustrate the difficulty in finding suitable instrumentation for measuring personal exposure to respirable silica.

The SAG mill at Rasp Mine has undergone a number of liner design modifications since commissioning in 2012, making liner wear and failure difficult to predict from historical data. During 2017, several instances of liner failure or near failure were experienced resulting in unplanned downtime for emergency relines or to patch liners in the lead up to a planned shutdown. The strategy for relining mills is often to minimise the frequency of relines (and subsequent shutdown costs) by extending liner life, achieved through design modifications. However, it was observed that as the Rasp SAG mill liners wear, mill performance declined with power draw increasing and throughput declining. Opportunity and inefficiency costs start to erode the revenue per additional tonne milled for a given set of liners, and in turn the benefit of delaying relines. As such, optimising the frequency of relines becomes a trade-off between reline costs and opportunity/inefficiency costs in delaying relines. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate a frame work for analysing costs using a marginal economic analysis with the assumption that the Law of Diminishing Returns can be applied to the life of mill liners. The SAG mill operating variables can be modelled to determine their impact on costs and an optimal reline point can be defined where the total costs are minimised. This prevents unexpected failures due to accelerated wear by providing justification to reline earlier and thereby allowing efforts to be focused on sustaining milling performance.CITATION:Standen, C M, 2018. Co-disposal of partly-dewatered mixed-plant rejects (MPR) from coal processing into spoil dumps is gaining favour amongst Australian coalmine operators in preference to conventional tailings disposal methods which require a tailings dam. Owing to their often low permeabilities and high degrees of saturation, MPR materials may be prone to the development of excess pore pressures when covered by spoil during routine dump advancement. The likelihood of dump failure will increase if these pore pressure regimes and the associated delay of shear strength development are not accounted for during waste dump design. To date however, little is known about these pore pressure regimes due to the complexities associated with their in situ measurement.This paper describes the in situ measurement of pore pressures in a cell of MPR placed within a coalmine spoil dump. Four vibrating wire piezometers (VWPs) were placed within a cell that was then filled with MPR and allowed to consolidate under self-weight before advancing an adjacent tiphead across the cell. The VWPs recorded the transient pore pressures during MPR placement and dump construction, and their interpretations are described within the context of laboratory measured parameters. The objective of the paper is to develop an understanding of the influence of caving on powered support rating by examining the geology and support performance at two sites which represent the current extremes in support rating, ie 6/240 Ton supports operating in the Hirst Seam at Solsgirth Colliery, Scotland, and 4/900 Tonne supports operating in the Bulli Seam, West Cliff Colliery, Australia. A conceptual model is introduced which considers the coal ahead of the face, the powered support, and the caved waste to be three yielding foundations which interact to control the subsidence of the roof strata. Different caving mechanisms are identified for the strata of the Hirst and Bulli Seams, ihese mechanisms being related to rock properties, ie to the palaeogeography and depositional conditions at each site, producing caved wastes with different yield characteristics. The results obtained for convergence and support reaction during production cycles at both sites are analysed to show the manner in which support reaction is developed, indicating the importance of high setting load densities in the Bulli Seam. Evaluation of the work done on the subsiding roof strata during typical production cycles by two of the yielding foundations, ie the powered support and the caved waste immediately behind the powered support, is used to further demonstrate the influence of caving mechanisms on support rating.

Currently, social impact assessment (SIA) is used to determine social impacts across the life-of-mine (LOM) to closure. This paper draws on recently completed SIA reports from the Martha gold mine in Waihi and qualitative interviews in the community that explored post-closure options, to review the challenges mining companies face when engaging with iwi4 through the SIA process and what that may mean for closure planning. The Maori of New Zealand consistently lobby to have a distinct voice in resource management issues. This is in line with the evolution of indigenous participation in SIA globally and with New Zealand policies, not least of which, the Treaty of Waitangi (the founding document of New Zealand) makes provision for Maori self-determination with regard to natural resources. Land use for mining has been a source of conflict for Maori and mining can have profound cultural and social impacts on the Maori community, yet despite Treaty intentions their representation in SIA has been comparatively limited. With this in mind, the Waitangi Tribunal has released the Ko Aotearoa Tenei (Wai 262) report, which recommends far reaching reforms to laws and policies affecting Maori culture and identity including natural resource management. This landmark report seeks to move the Maori-Government relationship beyond grievance to partnership. Given suggested policy changes in Wai 262 and the risks of poorly conceived closure planning, it is timely to review where Maori currently fit into the SIA process. The findings of this research suggest that improvements to the outcomes of this process will require companies to act beyond compliance. A brick veneer house located on a open-pit coal mine lease has been subject to ground vibration levels of up to 222 mm/s, and air vibration levels of up to 145 dBL. The dynamic response of the structure was measured with accelerometers, geophones, and strain gauges as part of a project investigating the response of brick veneer houses to blasting. This paper outlines the project, and provides information on brickwork strength, foundation investigations, and observations on damage due to blasting. Correlations have been made between crack behaviour and factors such as blast vibration levels and rainfall.
