Crandallite and millisite in Christmas Island 'B' and 'C' phosphate ores are rapidly decomposed by sodium hydroxide solutions at about 80QC. As these phosphates generally contain less than 1% silica, an alkaline extraction process can be designed, in which up to 95% of the sodium hydroxide used, may be recycled. The insoluble residue consists of an impure, highly reactive apatite, which in pot trials, has given good responses as a direct application fertiliser; alternatively this residue can be underacidulated to give a granular product with fertiliser potential. The hot leaching solution contains up to 95% of the alumina and approx- imately half of the phosphate from the original ore. Simple crystallising techniques have been developed on a laboratory-scale to use this leaching solution for producing smelter-grade alumina and detergent-quality trisodium phosphate. As the demand for detergents is limited, an investigation was made of the reaction between trisodium phosphate and slaked lime, derived from a high-grade New Zealand limestone occurring near Oamaru. The product is calcium phosphate, containing up to 40% P205, and less than 0.2% each of iron, aluminium and fluorine, and it should be a useful raw material for phosphoric acid manufacture. A preliminary economic evaluation of the whole process looks promising, And warrants further investigations, including pilot-plant work.

The Dinkidi Cu-Au porphyry deposit is situated in the Caraballo Range of North Luzon, Philippines. Although comparatively small, Dinkidi has unusually high gold grades with drilling by Climax-Arimco Mining Corporation delineating a 110 Mt orebody at 1.2 g/t gold and 0.5 per cent copper. The magmatic-hydrothermal evolution of Dinkidi records a distinctive switch in mineralisation from an early orthoclase-dominated Au-rich assemblage, typical of alkaline porphyry systems, to a later quartz stockwork Au-Cu rich assemblage typical of most calc-alkaline to shoshonitic porphyry systems. The early orthoclase-dominated stage is associated with the intrusion and crystallisation of a variably-textured clinopyroxene-syenite dyke that contains high-grade (5 - 20 g/t) gold mineralisation. We consider this dyke to be a Cu-Au porphyry analogue to the pegmatites found in granitic systems. Dinkidi is hosted within the Early Miocene Didipio Igneous Complex. This alkaline igneous complex is comprised of early unmineralised gabbros (pyroxene-plagioclase cumulates), clinopyroxenites (pyroxene cummulates), diorites and monzodiorites that have been intruded by a large, weakly mineralised monzonite pluton. The Dinkidi deposit is located at the southern margin of the monzonite pluton. Mineralisation is hosted within a composite monzonite stock. Within the stock, an 800 metres by ~200 metres (plan section) elongate monzonite stock (Tunja Monzonite) predates and hosts the bulk of the Au-Cu mineralisation. This has been intruded by the thin (10 to 30 m wide), highly mineralised variably-textured magnetite- and clinopyroxene- phyric syenite pegmatite (the Balut Dyke). The youngest phases of the composite stock are leucocratic quartz-monzonite porphyry (Quan Porphyry) that grades texturally, in its core, into a post-mineralisation crystal-crowded quartz-syenite (Bufu Felsite). The late-stage Bufu Felsite is inferred to be the source of much of the Cu-Au mineralisation. The Didipio Igneous Complex has intruded a sequence of Late Oligocene alkaline andesitic lavas and volcaniclastics and overlying potassic dacitic lavas. Whole rock geochemical analyses indicate that the intrusions and the potassic dacite lavas in the surrounding region are co-magmatic. Five main stages of hydrothermal activity are recorded at Dinkidi. An unmineralised K-silicate (biotite-magnetite) alteration assemblage formed during the intrusion of the Tunja Monzonite stock. The diorites surrounding the stock display intense selectively pervasive biotite and magnetite alteration and are cut by an extensive network of orthoclase veins and monzonite dykes. The orthoclase-dominated assemblages of Stage Two carry substantial high-grade Au mineralisation and are associated with the intrusion of the Balut Dyke. The emplacement of this unusual dyke is associated with emplacement of pegmatitic clinopyroxene-orthoclase-magnetite¦sulphide dykes, localised orthoclase flooding along the margins of the dyke, and subsequent emplacement of an extensive orthoclase-actinolite-bornite¦chalcopyrite-fluorite stock-work, and development of widespread selectively pervasive actinolite alteration. The main stage of Au-Cu mineralisation at Dinkidi is intimately associated with the intrusion and initial crystallisation of the leuco-monzonite porphyry (Quan Porphyry) and emplacement of a quartz stockwork followed by carbonate-sulphide deposition and intense vein-related sericite and carbonate alteration assemblages. The quartz stockwork formed synchronous with the deposition of the æBugoy QuartzoliteÆ, a very coarse grained mosaic of quartz-orthoclase-perthite along the walls and top of the crystallising intrusion. Stage 3 was terminated by crystallisation of the distinctively vuggy Bufu quartz-syenite phase in the core of the intrusive, with associated antiperthite veins, and the subsequent explosive brecciation of the roof of the intrusion, forming a quartz-fragment breccia from the Bugoy Quartzolite. Retrograde metasomatism during Stage Four was intimately associated with the emplacement of extensive, late-stage carbonate, silica and zeolite veins and widespread selectively pervasive carbonate alteration. The last hydrothermal stage at Dinkidi, Stage 5, is comprised of strong selectively pervasive clay alteration and is associated with fault-related brecciation of the Dinkidi stock.

It lays the foundation reference for related research and improving the intelligent level of mine ventilation.

This paper briefly reviews the history of mine haulage trucks. It reviews producti- vity limitations with respect to size or speed. Changing haul requirements once again create the need for more flexible mechanical drive power transmission equipment. The new equip- ment however is designed to provide extended life between overhauls as compared with previous mechanical transmissions.

The Dizon open pit mine of Benguet Corporation in western Central Luzon, Philippines has yielded some 182 000 t copper, and about 26 000 kg gold and 48 000 kg silver as by products since it started operation in November 1979. The 140 million tonne orebody is associated with a small quartz diorite porphyry stock emplaced in volcanic rocks on the basal slope of a stratovolcano complex as stockworks, fracture fillings and disseminated sulphide mineralization averaging 0.43% Cu, 0.93 g/t Au and 2.5 g/t Ag. Intense hydrothermal alteration accompanied the mineralization that developed fairly distinct mineral assemblages within and around the intrusive. Post-ore volcanic activity later gave birth to an upward-flaring diatreme which broke out south of and adjacent to the orebody and partially destroying it. Subsequent volcanic activity buried the mineralized area along with the rest of the stratovolcano's surrounding slopes under a thick deposit of pyroclastic and laharic debris. Erosion eventually removed the volcanic cappings over Dizon and also exposed the quartz diorite porphyry stock which might have resulted in the truncation of a sizeable section of the Dizon deposit. The chain of stratovolcanoes that comprise southeastern Zambales range hugging the southeastern edge of the Zambales ophiolite is part of a west-facing volcanic arc that extends for some 300 km along the western margin of central and southern Luzon whose development has been correlated to the subduction in the Manila Trench located off the west coast of Luzon. Prominent WNW-trending lineaments that cut across the ophiolite appear to be splays of the Philippine Fault whose intersection with the Mt. Pinatubo stratovolcano complex might have localized the emplacement of a number of intermediate stocks along with the gold-rich porphyry copper mineralizations associated with some of them.

Properly designed evapotranspirative (ET) cover systems can greatly reduce the amount of infiltration and groundwater recharge (deep percolation) into potential acid generating mine waste. In arid and semi-arid environments, infrequent precipitation, low measurable subsurface fluxes, spatial variability within mine waste and cover material, and evapotranspiration from below the cover system create challenges to monitoring moisture flux in these systems. Sloped ET single-layer (monolayer) cover depths and a variety of reclamation treatments are being studied at a copper tailing impoundment in Arizona, USA. To monitor the performance of different ET cover systems in response to precipitation patterns, four different test plots consisting of two different cover depths and two different vegetation densities were instrumented with heat dissipation sensor nests. The sensors measure the soil water pressure potential and allow hydraulic gradients to be determined within and below the cover systems to depths of 180 cm. Three replicate sensor nests were installed in each test plot to account for variability in materials and test plot treatments. Data collection occurs twice daily and is ongoing. Weather during the 26-month monitoring period was characterised by two months of greater than normal precipitation followed by nine months of normal precipitation and 15 months of abnormally dry conditions. Monitoring data indicate that deep percolation occurs in response to periods of extended precipitation, however, drying was observed to depths of six feet below the surface in all test plots. Using conservative assumptions regarding tailing hydraulic properties, one-dimensional downward flux predictions based on the monitoring data indicate very low (Additional long-term monitoring and installation of deeper and replicate monitoring sensors into tailings without cover systems are recommended to evaluate the long-term ET cover system performance and develop a better understanding of deep percolation rates at the sites.

The Platreef in South Africa contains one of the world’s largest reserves of platinum group elements. One of the major platinum group minerals (PGM) components in this ore is sperrylite (PtAs₂), which has been found to be slow floating compared to the other PGMs. In a study aimed at determining the reasons for the poor floatability of sperrylite and to improve its recovery, tests were carried out to determine the interactions of the mineral with a range of standard and novel collectors. Microflotation tests were carried out to determine the hydrophobicity of the minerals before and after adsorption of collectors. In addition, experiments were carried out to determine the enthalpy and extent of collector adsorption on the minerals and to investigate electrochemical interactions between sperrylite and selected standard collectors. The results indicated that poor collector adsorption was the major cause for the poor floatability of sperrylite. Sperrylite had both poor natural (14.5 per cent) floatability and collector-induced flotation recoveries, the highest recovery of 26 per cent being observed using PNBX collector at pH 9. Moreover, the rest potential tests showed that the interaction of sperrylite with standard collectors such as xanthates was poor. The decrease in potential after the addition of the standard collectors ranged from 7.9 mV to 24.9 mV under alkaline conditions. Furthermore, sperrylite rest potentials remained unchanged with a change in pH from basic to acidic, indicating its resistance to surface alteration. Surface alteration of the minerals is key for the chemisorption of collectors to take place on the mineral surface. This was further emphasised by flotation recoveries at low pH, where only certain collectors responded positively to a decrease in pH and these were shown to have undergone a structural change. This work has highlighted the difficulties associated with sperrylite flotation and provides some direction for future research.

Flotation recovery in geometallurgical modelling is usually predicted based on relationships developed from batch flotation testing of different ore types. These batch flotation tests are usually performed at a constant set of operating conditions and at a fixed feed grind size P80. Usually the laboratory feed grind P80 is that which is expected to be produced in the full-scale flotation circuit for that particular ore type.Flotation recovery will be a strong function of the valuable mineral particle size distribution, with lower recovery of ultra-fines due to poor flotation kinetics, optimum recovery for the intermediate sized particles and lower recovery for the coarser particles due to poorer liberation of this fraction. This valuable mineral particle size distribution is not characterised by the solids P80 parameter alone. The proportion of material in each class will also be a function of the slope of the size distribution and the degree of preferential grinding of the valuable mineral in comparison to the total mass of the ore.This paper will demonstrate (through example) how these other size distribution parameters can change with a change in grinding technology, the size and operating conditions used in a grinding unit and the characteristics of the classification technology used in conjunction with the grinding unit. Case studies will be presented that demonstrate how this can result in these parameters being very different in laboratory testing to that produced in the full-scale comminution circuit. A rule of thumb that laboratory rod milling rather than ball milling produces a size distribution most similar to that of the full-scale grinding circuit will be challenged. These differences can result in a significant change in flotation recovery. It is therefore important to consider these parameters when developing a laboratory geometallurgical program, to enable more accurate prediction of the flotation recoveries that will be achieved in the full-scale process.CITATION:Runge, K C, Tabosa, E and Jankovic, A, 2013. It is a very great privilege for me to be able to address you tonight and I am deeply sensible of the honour which has been done me. I am equally sensible of the inadequacy of my training for the position of President of your Institute.May I say at once what a very great pleasure it is to have so many members from the mainland States visiting us here in Tasmania. We do hope that you will find pleasure and profit in your stay.Since the Annual Conference is always held in the vicinity of one or other of the great mining fields, it has become the practice for the Presidential address to review the history of the particular field and t(j) indicate its place in the economic structure of the country.I propose to follow this practice and to try and present to you a short picture of thÇ mineral industry as it has existed in Tasmania. None of the information is new it is available in diverse and remote geological reports and in publications such as Witham's Western Tasmania and the more recent Peaks of Lyell. The last composite approach was written twenty years ago by P. B. Goodenough and Fergusson Islands, in eastern PapuaNew Guinea, lie in an area of crustal extension on the western end of the Woodlark Basin seafloor spreading system. The islands are made up of a number of mountainous domes of complexely deformed basement, and these are intruded by large bodies of granodiorite. The domes are bounded by curved shear zones and faults dipping outwards at angles of around 25 to 45¦. The cores of the domes contain lower crustal rocks of eclogite and granulite facies, these rocks have undergone retrograde metamorphism in the outer sheared zones. Movement indicators on the shear zones indicate a complex moverm.-It geometry which does not fit the models proposed by earlier workers. These dome-like structures are similar to the metamorphic core complexes of the western United States Cordilleran region, however there are a number of aspects which do not fit with the models proposed for the development of metamorphic core complexes. Uplift of the metamorphic basement probably resulted from a combination of forces associated with the extension of the crust and the intrusion and emplacement of granodiorite plutons.

In recent years, the utilisation of ultra-fine ore in ironmaking has gradually increased due to the depletion of high-quality iron ore. The use of ultra-fine ore in the ironmaking process is typically energy intensive and leads to high CO2 emissions. The improvement of sinter reducibility is one of the methods used to reduce the environmental impact of using fine ore.In this study, a high-strength and high-reducibility sinter manufacturing process was investigated by controlling the sintering reaction. The key technology used in this method is the manufacture of mini-pellets by selective granulation equipment. The mini-pellets consist of iron ore, limestone and burnt lime and are designed to melt at temperatures below 1200°C. The molar ratio of CaO to Fe2O3 of the mini-pellets is 0.25~0.75. The 2~5 mm diameter mini-pellets are manufactured with burnt lime as the binding material.During the sintering of mini-pellets, goethite, which has relatively high reducibility, should be retained as residual ore in the sinter cake. The strength of the sinter cake was kept by the bonding reaction of the mini-pellets, which have a low melting temperature. This is the main principle of the reaction-controlled sintering method.The reaction-controlled sintering method manufactures a high-strength and high-reducibility sinter cake and increases sinter productivity by around 15 per cent using ultra-fine iron ore.CITATION:Chung, B J and Ji, Y K, 2015. The term Engineer of Record (EoR) is commonly used in North America and South Africa to define the responsible person for the design, construction and operational phases of a tailings storage facility (TSF). Recently, this role has been elevated in prominence within Australia, but what does it really mean? Recent updates to international TSF guidelines suggests appointing an EoR is good practice, but where does the responsibilities of the EoR start and finish. Interestingly, both Samarco and Mount Polley failures had active EoR’s in place. This suggests that nominating an EoR alone, is not the full answer to mitigating the potential for a TSF failure. Appropriate construction and operational practices are key to the success of the design of TSFs, where all too often, operators ignore the operating plans developed by the designer. To be successful, a key consideration of the EoR role, is involvement in the operational phase of the TSF. This requires ‘buy-in’ from the mine managers and a change in the way TSFs are perceived by site. This paper explores how the roles and responsibilities of the EoR can assist in improving governance of TSFs if implemented effectively and what role the client has to ensure the success of the EoR.

In 1556, Agricola noted that "a prudent owner, before he buys shares, ought to go to the mine and carefully examine the nature of the vein, for it is very important that he should be on his guard lest fraudulent sellers of shares should deceive him"(1). In today's world, the owner rarely has the opportunity to visit the mine and, instead of reading about the `nature of the vein' in annual reports, prospectuses, government publications, et cetera he sees the words `reserves' and `resources'. Unfortunately, the subject of reserves and resources has become increasingly complex and Canadians, along with their counterparts in Australia and elsewhere, are still struggling with definitions which will attempt to cover all conceivable circumstances from national or regional resource endowment to the material to be extracted next week from a given stope or open pit bench. The providers and recipients of reserve and resource data are: - Government agencies who are concerned with questions of national endowment, strategic use of raw materials and other questions of public policy. - Stockholders who have a vested interest in the basic assets of their companies. - Financiers who are concerned about the security of their loans. - Regulatory bodies whose function is to protect a frequently naive investor from unscrupulous practices. - Management, at head office and on-site, who need basic information for decision-making, whether it be to open up a new mine, expand or close an existing operation, acquire or merge with other entities, or, more mundanely, for routine mine planning. To satisfy their demands with unanimously accepted definitions is a formidable task but, it is my impression that, little by little, a concensus appears to be growing within the industry.

Alcoa operates two bauxite mines at Huntly and Willowdale, located within the jarrah forest south-east of Perth in Western Australia. Ore reserves are shallow but extensive, and mining pits averaging around 20 ha in size are distributed across a mining region in a mosaic pattern, linked to a centrally-located crusher by a radiating network of haulroads. A mining or crusher region is defined partly in terms of economic haul distances, and new regions are opened once the current regions’ reserves have been mined. Since commencing in 1973, the Huntly mine has constructed and progressively closed three previous mining regions and is presently in a transition from the fourth and current region of McCoy to the new region of Myara. At present rates of production, approximately 450 ha is cleared, mined and rehabilitated each year.The value of topsoil in returning a diverse mix of native jarrah forest plant species and supplying nutrients, organic matter and soil biota to rehabilitated areas has long been recognised. Managing the topsoil resource is therefore a critical element in the success of rehabilitation outcomes, but the distribution and dynamic nature of mining operations pose significant planning and logistical challenges. The regionalised approach to mining at Huntly also presents a range of issues for what are, in effect, soil management plans for episodic mine closure. The nature of mining and rehabilitation operations are described, together with the planning processes that Alcoa follows to quantify, track and report on soil movement. A case study of the Huntly mine demonstrates that an integrated operational and life-of-mine planning process is essential for successful and cost-effective mine rehabilitation.CITATION:Hackett, L and Grigg, A, 2014. Recent mineral exploration successes in the Proterozoic rocks of the Mount Isa Inlier are unprecedented in the regionÆs history. This new era of discovery, particularly for æblindÆ deposits, owes its origin to perseverance and advances in geoscience and exploration techniques, notably geophysics. Prospective host rocks outcrop over more than 50 000 km2 of the Mount Isa Inlier and extend a further 100 000 km2 below cover. They contain major deposits of copper, lead, zinc, silver and phosphate (Georgina Basin) and significant deposits of gold, uranium and cobalt. The discovery in 1923 of silver, lead and zinc at Mount Isa established the regionÆs world-class mineral potential. Since 1990, major orebodies have been discovered at Cannington (silver-lead-zinc), Century (zinclead-silver), Ernest Henry and Osborne (copper-gold) and extensions to known deposits at Dugald River and George Fisher (zinc-lead-silver), and Esperanza (copper). This success is of global significance and reflects a prospectivity upgrade since widespread copper mineralisation was discovered and mined in the Cloncurry district a century ago.

Estimating the probability of failure for embankments is not intuitive. It requires not only an appreciation of the strength of the embankment, but an understanding of the variability and uncertainty in the strength parameters as well. These additional aspects are, in themselves, relatively new to most practicing engineers, and therefore require some discussion.This paper discusses the concepts of probability and uncertainty, and presents a reliability-based numerical experiment, together with a literary study and collation of some of the author’s historical slope stability analyses, to investigate whether a direct relationship between safety factors and probabilities of failure exists for certain levels of uncertainty in strength parameters. In doing so, a useful tool is presented whereby knowing the safety factor of a simple slope or embankment with a consistent level of uncertainty, one can infer an approximate probability of failure.CITATION:Gover, S M, 2018. Dust suppression is an important environmental control in most mining operations. The poorest quality water within a mine site is often used for dust suppression since it provides an effective means of reducing the volume of poor quality water. The ultimate fate of contaminants or salinity associated with water used in dust suppression is important to consider for optimising water management and assessing the environmental impact and life span and maintenance requirements of roads associated with dust suppression.The propensity for remobilisation of contaminants or salts depends on a range of factors such as the application rate, climate, road construction, water chemistry and soil geochemistry. This paper describes a typical study approach which could be used to assess the short- and long-term impacts of mine water application for dust suppression. The steps of the study are: reviewing the environmental setting, estimating water requirements for dust suppression, reviewing source water chemistry, developing a mass balance model and assessing the mobility and fate of contaminants with a geochemical model.This approach identifies which salt species are likely to form and whether they are prone to remobilisation. It is possible to quantitatively assess the risk of exporting contaminants or salt from roads and to refine the dust suppression strategy to minimise the environmental risk. The approach can be applied at mine sites to address regulator concerns, aid decision-making and improve the understanding of short- and long-term environmental risks.CITATION:Gimber, C, 2013. The extraction of groundwater to produce gas from coal seam gas (CSG) reservoirs has highlighted the opportunity for beneficial uses of groundwater in Australia. This paper presents an assessment of alternate groundwater modelling approaches that can be used for assessment of one beneficial use option, that of injection. This assessment examines the outcome of the use of different simulation methods on predictions of hydrodynamic behaviour.In this paper, a simplified hydraulic concept of a multi-aquifer system within the hypothetical injection field was used to investigate the hydrodynamic behaviour of injection into the Precipice Sandstone. Comparisons were made through the analysis of a Theis 3D analytical solution with 2D and 3D numerical solutions. The paper discusses the different solution methods and the impact of these on predictions of pressure and flux. Differences in 2D and 3D solutions result in implications if planning injection as a beneficial use of water. For example, the 2D solution resulted in faster and higher injection pressure build-up when compared to the 3D solutions. The 2D modelling could result in either plans that require higher capital expenditure for a greater number of wells in order to spread the pressure effect and remain below the maximum injection pressure or a reduced injection rate. Meanwhile, the 3D modelling with sensitivity analysis could result in planning for lower capital expenditure for fewer wells required to spread the pressure effect and remain below the maximum injection pressure. It is well known that clays affect the flotation performance, and many of the refractory gold ores around the world contain clay minerals. Therefore, an ore sample from the Carlin Trend was selected for this study as these ores contain large quantities of clays. The presence of clay minerals in an ore makes it susceptible to a range of variables, such as the solution chemistry determined by pH and the chemistry of the rheology modifiers. The viscosity of the ore slurry was measured as a function of solid concentration and particle size distribution, in addition to using different rheology modifiers and pH regulators. The results were correlated with the ore flotation performance. It was found that various reagents known commonly as dispersants or rheology modifiers have different effects on the ore slurry viscosity.
