The quantity, quality and detail of project information increases as project development moves from initial scoping level studies, to pre-feasibility and option studies, then definitive feasibility study and basic engineering stages. Data accumulates from metallurgical and vendor testing from various ore types and composites carried out to assess physical characteristics and processing responses of the ore. Over-simplification or assumptions about the orebody for flow sheet development can result in using æaverageÆ information for design. Use of averages of data can have adverse implications on sizing of plant and equipment and consequently on definitive study cost estimates and detailed engineering. In practice, the treatment plant workforce is faced with managing a non-homogeneous or non-average orebody in a variable operating environment that is not always predictable. This paper presents views on how to use the data generated from testwork in project development and for process and plant design. Examples of process design risk or operating risk are presented. Although this topic is applicable to the broad range of process design decision making in the minerals industry, this discussion references comminution, flotation and extraction processes for gold and base metal ores.

During the year 1940 a complete investigation was made of the whole of the stoping operations throughout the Great Boulder Mine and, as a result, it was decided to convert some of the existing shrinkage stopes into cut-and-fill stopes, and also to mine many of the more recently developed ore blocks by the latter method. The necessity for filling was due primarily to the structure of the ore blocks, the character of the walls and possible excessive dilution, but was influenced also by the grade of the ore-block and by the fact that cleaner mining can be carried out by cut-and-fill stoping.The comparatively few cut-and-fill stopes in operation prior to 1940 had been filled mainly with waste rock from development work, but as the amount of this material available, or likely to become available, would have been wholly inadequate for future operations, it was proposed to construct a system of passes to supply filling material from the surface.Owing to the distribution of the stopes, no central pass or system of passes could be devised which would service all the stopes satisfactorily.However, work was commenced on two passes, one designed to service the cut-and-fill stopes in the Eastern Section of the mine, and another to service those in the Western Section. It was realised that these passes could serve only a small proportion of the total number of Stopes (Figs. 1 and 2). During the progress of this work experiments were undertaken to test the possibility of using filtered tailings underground as an adjunct to the above scheme, but for various reasons these were only partially completed.Early in 1942 it was suggested by the Mill Superintendent that an attempt be made to fill with wet classified flotation tailings as practised at Mt. Lyell in Tasmania and at the Triton Mine at Reedy, West Australia. For the purpose of testing this, an experimental stope was prepared on the 309-ft. level, "X" Lode. This was 100 feet long and averaged 4 feet in width. Water-tight rearings were built at each end of the stope and waste rock fill was spread to a height of 6 to 8 feet above the timber. Used filter cloths were laid on top of the fill and brought a few feet, up the walls of the stope. A two-inch victaulic drainage line was then placed in position, the end passing through a hole in one of the bearings and thence to a sump. In the central portion of the stope two vertical pipes were brought up from this line. Possibilities and Working of the Specific Agglomeration of Fibrous Materials and Residues Plant based fibrous materials are becoming of increasing interest in a multitude of industrial applications. Main advantages are the specific lower energy demand and virtually closed CO2 cycle, excellent mechanical properties based on low density as well as a high level of recyclables. In contrast, processing and handling of such materials is associated with a number of challenges. These challenges are mainly related to specific morphological characteristics in correlation to fibre length and structure (branching and splices). Specific problems in further processing steps including transport, dosage or storage for natural fibre compounding, result from form-locking bonds leading to burling, clusters or plaits. Technologies of fibre processing are well known, but other than textile based technologies they generally result in intermediate goods which do not allow direct industrial application. The investigation to be presented is based on results of recent research activities and shows two possible technical solutions of innovative fibre agglomeration procedures. These methods allow the conversion of middle to long fibres into a form, which eases further processing and dosage significantly and therefore allows free flowing too. The procedures are based on the working principles of rolling and winding technology. Within the work, both of the patented methods and their respected lab-scaled devices will be described. Further, results will be shown for an up-scaled rolling agglomeration unit applying the developed principle and consisting of multiple process zones. Possible variations of the resulting product characteristics and the impact of different process parameters will be discussed based on the trials with natural fibre (hemp and flax) agglomeration. As a main outcome of the research, product qualities can be supplied according to the requirements of the specific application in correlation to agglomerate strength, porosity or form. In conclusion, recent developments for specific methods of characterization will be depicted.

The alluvial gold industry of New Zealand is based on the placer deposits in Otago and on the West Coast. Production from these since discovery in the 1850s has been an estimated 480 t (15 Moz) of gold. Annual output has expanded continuously since 1980 and is expected to be over 2 t of gold for 1989. Following a historical review, the characteristics of typical operations, which use hydraulic excavators and mobile trommel units are discussed. Descriptions are then given of alluvial activities in Otago and on the West Coast.

Troy Resources acquired the Karouni Gold Project in Guyana, South America in 2014 and immediately proceeded to a Pre-Feasibility Study and project implementation. The study considered two open pit mines feeding a conventional carbon in leach (CIL) gold plant with a capacity of 1Mtpa. The study assumed a total of 2.61 million tonnes of ore with an average grade of 3.84 g/t gold with a recovered gold production of 303,526 ounces over a three year mine life.The project development involved drilling metallurgical test holes, securing second-hand major pieces of equipment where suitable, and arranging shipping to Guyana. The remote location meant logistical considerations were paramount. The plant consists of conventional two-stage crushing with single stage ball milling and a gravity circuit. The tailings circuit includes DETOX.The extremely high rainfall presented challenges with water management and the necessity to dispose of clean water to the environment. The DETOX was also mandatory due to the highly sensitive environment and past history in the area. The criticality of this meant that in the design, any cyanide in the tailings would precipitate in a plant shutdown.Lessons were learned and the project has been both profitable and successful for Troy Resources in a new operating location. In addition, the project has created jobs, delivered royalties and brought new skills into an area where previously there was little current mining activity.CITATION:Nilsson, K and Connelly, D, 2015. The Department of Mineral Resources has a statutory responsibility for mine site environmental management and control in New South Wales. The Department is focusing on an environmental management systems (EMS) approach, as a management tool to achieve æbest practiceÆ outcomes both within our own organisation and on mine sites. One of the DepartmentÆs tools is environmental risk assessment and management which incorporates the Mining, Rehabilitation and Environmental Management Process (MREMP). The MREMP was introduced many years ago in order to integrate the activities of key stakeholders who may have a material interest in the mine. The MREMP provides an ideal mechanism by which ædue diligenceÆ requirements and environmental management programs can be integrated into mining operations and lead to a sustainable post-mining land use.

When Haematite Explorations Pty. Ltd. began prospecting for petroleum in 1960, there was only ill-defined geological evidence on the land bordering Bass Strait to support the belief that petroleum lay trapped in sedimentary formations beneath its shallow waters.A reconnaissance of the area, made in 1961 by the airborne magnetometer method, covered the waters and islands of the Strait and overlapped the Victorian and Tasmanian coasts. The survey indicated the presence of the Bass Basin (which is completely water-covered), assisted in outlining the Otway and Gippsland Basins, and showed that each basin contains sedimentary rocks over 10,000 ft thick. Information on the regional geology and minor volcanic activity was also obtained.Marine seismic surveys carried out from 1962 to 1965 defined these basins more accurately and showed the nature and structure of the thick sedimentary sections.Correlation of the seismic data with onshore wells identified the sediments as Tertiary and Mesozoic. Subdivisions of the former in all basins and the latter in the Otway Basin were made. These Tertiary and Mesozoic rocks are not seriously deformed and they have good prospects of containing petroleum.Possible structural and stratigraphic traps, recognized from the seismic record sections by petroleum geologists, are being tested by offshore drilling which began in 1964.

Much effort over the years has been put into the task of devising parameters which adequately assess the metallurgical efficiency of mineral processmg operations. One of the most celebrated of these methods is the so-called "release analysis" method of Dell (1953) which tackles the problem in terms of an ideal separation based on sequential retreatment of the products and tails of a given separation process. Other methods have also been proposed by Jowett (1969) and by Holland-Batt (1971 ). While these procedures are appropriate to multi-component mineralogical separations, they perhaps do not lend themselves to the much more simple two-component systems encountered in coal preparation. However Dell (1962) has suggested the use of the term "specific profit" in coal preparation in order to assess the conditions that give maximum economic gain. Specific profit is derived from data relating washability data with equipment performance and operating costs. The procedure for using this criterion for comparative purposes is therefore somewhat cumbersome as is illustrated by its lack of widespread acceptance in the coal preparation literature.In contrast, an efficiency index, E, which is both simple and meaningful from the utilitarian standpoint, has been proposed by Tsiperovich and Evtushenko (1959a). This index is defined by the relation, E = Yield X Tailings ash/Product ash (1) A cursory examination of this parameter shows that it increases when yield and tailings ash increase and also when product ash decreases; all of which are desirable circumstances in coal cleaning operations.Further, it will be shown that slight variations in operation are amplified by this function which makes comparisons simple and direct.While the use of this index is quite extensive in the Soviet coal preparation literature for some reason it has not received wide usag~ elsewhere.

The mining industry is the largest source of foreign income for South Africa. It is also the main source of employment in the country and, as an industry; it is also one of the largest. Due to the labour-intensive nature of the industry, labour costs in South African mines make up nearly 50 per cent of the total mine cost. It is thus imperative to have optimum labour planning and labour management systems in place.The focus of this study was to investigate current underground labour-planning models. It is shown that there are serious limitations. The range between an oversupply and undersupply of labour can be as high as ten per cent. A new system was therefore developed to ensure a constant labour demand and supply on a daily basis. One of the main objectives was to determine the existing labour supply range and thus the requirements to fill the undersupply. For this purpose, a specific methodology was designed to capture and process all the relevant information. Mine personnel was involved throughout the entire process to ensure ownership of the new model. This buy-in was achieved through planning workshops, interactive presentations and discussions. The improved frequency of daily blasts validated the new system by providing the correct amount and mix of the labour force. The new labour-planning model was then extended to optimise revenue. Implementation on a mine resulted in increased income of R95 million.

The beach sand industry is the only Australian mineral industry which, so far, has used electrostatic separation on a full commercial scale. The main application of the process is for the separation of rutile from zircon. Laboratory work has demonstrated that electrostatic methods are effective for ilmenite-monazite and cassiterite-zircon separations, thus facilitating the production of high grade monazite and cassiterite products from top-strip table concentrates, but the commercial application of these processeshas been rather limited so far. Overseas, electrostatic methods are becoming more widely used for the treatment of granular material which is not amenable to flotation. The use of electrostatic separation for the treatment of ores other than beach sands has been investigated in this laboratory 1, 2, 3, and two pilot separators were built during i953 to carry out field tests. Of these, the first was an inclined feed plate separator for the removal of silica from granular lime-sand in Western Australia, the second a conductance roll separator for the removal of diamonds from alluvial gravel in New South Wales. In both cases the whole of the ore passed through the separator, not a gravity concentrate only as in beach sand practice. The two types of separator mentioned are shown diagramatically in Figs. 1 and 2.

The behaviour of iron ore granules in the feeding process of sintering is significantly influenced by the material properties of the granulated mix. Therefore, the measurement of key material properties of the iron ore granulated mix is indispensable prior to the simulation of the sintering process based on the discrete element method (DEM). In this paper, three key property parameters of the iron ore granulated mix, apparent density, elastic modulus and rolling friction coefficient, were measured in laboratory-scale experiments. For different sintering processes, the moisture content of the granulated mix normally varies according to the specific requirements for granule size distribution and operating conditions. Therefore, understanding the effect of moisture content on the property parameters of iron ore granules is very helpful in accurately determining the property parameters for DEM simulation work. In this paper, six groups of iron ore granule samples with six levels of moisture contents were prepared through granulation and the trends in apparent density, elastic modulus and rolling friction coefficient with the increase of moisture content were plotted and analysed based on the measurement results. The results show that as moisture increases from 6.9 per cent to 9.1 per cent, the apparent density decreases from about 3000 to 2800 kg/m3. With moisture increasing within the same range, the elastic modulus first decreases from over 200 MPa to below 100 MPa and then reaches a relative constant value of about 40 MPa at higher moisture contents. Rolling friction coefficients are measured using two methods with both indicating a similar trend, with the rolling friction coefficient first decreasing and then rising as moisture increases from 6.9 per cent to 9.1 per cent. Permian coal seams from the Tomago Coal Measures in the Northern Coalfield, New South Wales, were analysed petrographically and reflectance measurements made for each. Vitrite contents were moderate to high for most of the coals but for two they were very low.The mineral-matter contents were low to moderate by Australian standards. Different profiles of a particular seam could be correlated by petrographic methods.Standard seam profiles were drawn up and from these an idealized Tomago seam sequence was compiled. All the coals were of high-volatile bituminous rank. Their carbon contents, but not thcir reflectances, varied significantly with the quantity of vitrinite present.

The Torington Lodes.This paper describes investigations into mineralogical, petrological and structural associations of cassiterite in occurrences of economic value. The work was carried out in three mines, during a number of years, in the hope that the, data collected might be helpfulin the search for occurrences of cassiterite in stanniferous zones and reduce unproductive exploratory work. Tin-bearing lodes at Torington, in the New England district, New South Wales, have been worked since 1880, and the locality is the most important centre of lode tin occurrence in the, State. The township of Torington is 18 miles westerly from Deepwater, a station on the Great Northern Railway, 446 miles from Sydney.The tinfield forms part of the Mole Tableland, which has an altitude between 3,000 ft. and 4,000 ft. above sea level. The country rock, in which the stanniferous lodes occur, is granite of Permian age, which has been intruded into Carboniferous claystone. An inlierof claystone is exposed to the west of the stanniferous area, 'and in it, close to' its contact with the enclosing granite, are occurrences of wolfram and bismuth. These minerals, together with chalcopyrite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, zinc blende, galena and molybdenite, in very small quantity, are associated with cassiterite in lodes traversing the granite, particularly near the claystone, but decrease in amount with distance from the contact. Their occurrence is sporadic and usually causes no trouble in dressing the cassiterite concentrate, the final product containing less than 1% of total penalisable impurity. In Curnow's mine, pyrite, galena and molybdenite have been observed at 700 ft. from surface.The granite is of the biotite type and its structure may be divided into four groups, or classifications, arising from segregation processes during cooling and consolidation. The four classes, in order of extent of distribution, are:1. Granite of normal type, in which the constituent quartz felspar and mica, have a particle size approximately 14, in.2. Porphyritic granite, in which the felspar particles are from % in. to lin. in size, that of the quartz and mica approximately % in.3. A fine-grained granite, in which the particles of all constituent minerals are % in. or less in size;4. A rock of highly siliceous ground mass containing very small particles of felspar and almost negligible biotite.Type 1 is the general type of granite in all mines of the field; types 2 and 3 may occur as large masses, or all three classes may merge rapidly one into the other, and all be disclosed in 20 ft. of driving. Usually, however, the segregations are massive, but are not associated with any special horizon. For instance, a mass of porphyiiticgranite extends from surface to a depth of 440 ft., for a distance of 350 ft. south from the New England main shaft. The upper levels of Curnow's mine, 14" mile south-east, are in normal granite, but a restricted mass 'of porphyritic granite occurred between Nos. 5 and 6 levels, or 400-500 ft. below the collar of the shaft...

The development of the carbonization of brown coal briquettes to produce a hard char suitable for use in place of imported hard coke has continued in Victoria, and an experimental carbonization plant has recently been commissioned at Morwell by the Gas and Fuel Corpora.tion to assess the prospects for the commercial production and marketing of hard char in Victoria. The char offers advantages in its very low ash content and its uniform lump size, while the indications are that it could be marketed at a price competitive with that of imported hard coke. The hard char is unique amongst metallurgical fuels in combining a high reactivity with high physical strength, and research by the University of Melbourne into its utilization in foundry cupolas for melting iron has shown how modifications could be made to take advantage of these properties. An 18 inch experimental cupola has been built to test in practice the predictions made from this fundamental research.INTRODUCTIONSteady development has continued in Victoria from the promising laboratory researches at the University of Melbourne which were reported to the 1955 Annual Conference of The Institute (Worner, 1956). This work had shown that a hard lump char could be produced by the high temperature carbonization of standard industrial briquettes by careful control of the heating conditions, and that the special briquetting techniques adopted in Germany were unnecessary with Yallourn brown coal. Continuation of this research has led to the refinement of carbonization techniques and has increased the strength of the char until it has equalled that of conventional metallurgical cokes.

Bulk ore tailings from the Macraes gold mine gold extraction process are stored in a large (ca 0.6 km2, 80 m deep) mixed tailings impoundment whose pH is maintained near 8 by natural rock neutralizing capacity. The mixed tailings will be stored in this impoundment in perpetuity after mining ceases. Confidence in the long term environmental stability of these tailings can be gained from examination of mineralogically and chemically similar geological situations in the immediate vicinity. A sequence, typically about 5 m thick, of sands and gravels derived from the Macraes mineralized zone 12 000 to 28 000 years ago contains rounded detrital sulphide mineral grains which are unoxidized despite close proximity to the surface and occasional incursion of oxygenated waters. Saturating water pH is currently 7-8. Sands with 0.2 to 0.8 wt % organic carbon host sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB), and localized cementation by authigenic framboidal pyrite has occurred. Comparison of the 28 000 year-old sediments with the modem tailings suggests that similar chemistry will prevail, possibly with deposition of authigenic pyrite in the tailings, in the long term. As long as the present slightly anoxic and circumneutral pH environmental conditions are maintained in the mixed tailings dam, sulphide decomposition and acidification are unlikely. These sediments provide a plausible geological analogue for long-term benign storage of the mixed tailings impoundment.

In this address I look back over the past 40 years of mineral exploration in New Zealand û essentially the period since the Second World War (ie since 1945). It was the period of my personal involvement, and indeed of the personal involvement of a number of you. Luckily it was aperiod of great interest and activity. In the previous 50 years, virtually nothing had happened, and it is kindest to draw a veil over that period. In the very important earlier 40 years (1855 - 1895) the New Zealand gold rush occurred. That must have been a fascinating, rewarding period, which has been thoroughly documented by better historians than myself. I will simply comment firstly that its mineral explorers (gold-prospectors) were very successful indeed, and found most localities of the minerals they sought, in spite of using very different methods from ours of today. Secondly, they were preceeded by one of Maori exploration, which searched for a much restricted list of minerals, but succeeded in finding virtually every locality we know of today. The explorers of both of these early periods were obviously highly successful, but, in the time available, I must restrict myself to the period since 1945. I am currently editing the effective up-dating of Gordon WilliamsÆ 'Economic Geology of New Zealand' (1974). It covers the last 12 years or so. Many of you are contributing to that volume û both as authors and as referees û and I would like to take this opportunity of thanking you all. Although this new volume excludes the energy field, many of us have been involved in it, and I am therefore including energy minerals in this review, as Williams did in 1974.

The Golden Ridges Mine, one of the properties of New Guinea Goldfields Limited, is situated on the right bank of Nami Creek, not far from the township of Wau, in the Territory of New Guinea.The property is somewhat unique, in that the goldbearing ore-body occurs in the form of a flat seam-like deposit lying on a volcanic breccia, and covered with a mantle of overburden of decomposed porphyry. The overburden varies in thickness up to a maximum of about 65 ft.The ratio of overburden to ore is about 3 to 1. The practice developed is to strip the overburden by hydraulicking, and to mine the exposed ore under open-cut conditions, blasting to a vertical face, and using electrically operated scraper hoists for conveying the broken ore to the mill bins.The stripping of the overburden involves the boring of well-drill holes, blasting the holes and then hydraulicking the shattered material.

Samples of a refractory copper ore were examined to test their response to segregation roasting, flotation, and acetonitrile leaching. Recoveries in the segregation roasting stage were between 60 and 100 per cent, while flotation recoveries varied between 60 and 85 per cent in cleaner concentrates assaying 25-40 per cent copper.The fraction of the copper which could be leached from the concentrate by an acetonitrile/sulphuric acid/cupric ion leach solution varied from 16 to 97 per cent, the lower recoveries being correlated with the presence of sulphide in the concentrate.
