Lac Cinquante is a mineralogically simple, vein-hosted uranium deposit in Archean basement rocks (Angikuni greenstone belt) that originally were unconformably overlain by Proterozoic sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the Baker Lake Group (BLG). Basement rocks are mainly pillowed and massive tholeiitic lavas (N-MORB) with interbedded tuff; overlying sedimentary rocks comprise a basal talus/fault breccia that grades upward into fluvial sedimentary rocks and subaerial, trachytic volcanic rocks; granite and porphyry dikes (Hudson and/or Nueltin granitoids) intrude the basement rocks. A typical section through the Main Zone comprises 1) laminated ‘tuff’, 2) altered (carbonate-hematite-chlorite) schistose ‘tuff’, 3) a pitchblende-bearing, breccia-vein, 4) altered ‘tuff’, and 5) laminated ‘tuff’. The vein comprises brecciated chlorite, hematite, and pitchblende with carbonate cementing the breccia. Graphitic ‘tuff’ with sulfide-stringer veinlets locally overlies or underlies the vein. Pitchblende also occurs in the altered rocks and in gash veins that cut basement rocks. U-Pb ages on pitchblende fall into two groups: one at 1828 } 29 Ma reflects primary uranium mineralization, and a second at 1437 } 31 Ma represents resetting. Pb-Pb chemical ages show other resetting events at 1260-1321Ma, 895 Ma, 741-813 Ma, and 660-706 Ma. One possible genetic model for the Lac Cinquante deposit involves leaching of uranium from granitoids and the BLG by basinal brines that migrated to depositional sites where graphitic rocks acted as a reductant. A second model requires that uranium was sole-sourced from the BLG and that granitoid rocks provided heat to drive the hydrothermal system, which leached and ultimately precipitated uranium. The deposit has characteristics similar to vein-type uranium deposits in the Beaverlodge District of Saskatchewan

Studies were made on the projectile impact sensitivity of explosives by subjecting explosive samples to the impact of metal projectiles fired from a 0.50- caliber gun . The projectiles , in the form of right cylinders , made plane surface to plane surface contact with the explosives . Pressures in the explosive were investigated with an expendable pressure transducer in some instances . The physical model of the projectile - explosive interaction describes , in principle , the duration of the peak shock pressure in terms of the projectile and explosive geometry and the steady- state penetration of the explosive . Of the explosives studied , liquid hydrogen- solid oxygen and liquid oxygen - solid or liquid hydrocarbon fuel were the most shock sensitive ( requiring an initiating shock of about 1.0 kb or 987 atmospheres pressure ) ; cast TNT was the least sensitive ( requiring an initiating shock of more than 110 kb pressure ) . Measurements of pressure in the explosive showed some moderate space resolution by the transducer and gave pressure distributions in agreement with expectations from the model of the shock processes . The appearance of the recovered projectiles and the calculated initiation shock pressures suggest that the solid explosives were initiated directly to high- order detonation , whereas the liquid explosives were probably initiated to low- order detonation-- with a subsequent , later transition to high- order detonation .

Ceci signifie que techniquement nous a11ons en moyenne, quotidiennement, 12500 fois pres de l&apos;effet d&apos;anode sur !&apos;ensemble de nos 720 cuves qui produisent aujourd&apos;hui environ 405 000 tonnes d&apos;aluminium liquide annuellement. Des 695 kg equivalent en C02 par tonne d&apos;aluminium produite en moyenne annue11ement, de 1990 a 2000, nous en sommes rendus ace jour a environ 35 kg equivalent en C02 par tonne produite. The vapor-phase section of the Coal Hydrogenation Demonstration Plant at Louisiana, Mo., was operated for the first time in April 1949. The run lasted only 10 days because of time limitation (pending plant dedication in May) and the small amount of charging stock available. The primary purpose of the operation was to break in and determine the operability of the equipment and to supplement the operators&apos; classroom training with actual practice by operating the plant under mild conditions. A secondary aim was to obtain data on the hydrogenation of petroleum oil and lignite tar distillate at approximately 10,000 p.s.i. while making gasoline and Diesel fuel oil. Although the operations were carried out under conditions considerably below those used in the plant design, a great deal of experience and data was obtained. As it is not feasible at this time to conduct further vapor-phase operations on similar stocks, this report has been prepared to present and summarize the data obtained through this operation.

UNLIKE most previous Howe lecturers, I had not the good fortune to be associated with Henry Marion Howe, nor to be directly one of his students. Yet, through his writings, he has been my teacher, as he has of all American metallurgists. Instructive as his writings are-I use the present tense because Howe thought so keenly and reasoned so surely, seeing clearly, as if by intuition, what was hazy to lesser minds, that his writings are still vital-it is not, those books and papers, nor even the minds he trained in his classes, that were his most outstanding service. It was the spirit of Howe in his: approach to the problems of metallurgy, his broad-mindedness and fair-ness, his recognition of the need for theories and hypotheses to explain metallurgical phenomena, his willingness to use them as servants, as well as his questioning attitude-his refusal to accept them as masters-that comprise his greatest service. This most thoroughly warrants the honor the Institute pays each year to his memory. These traits I so respect and honor in any man that I glory in this opportunity to do reverence to him in whom they were so notably united.

The 1965 Lignite Symposium, the Louth in a series and the third sponsored by the University of North Dakota and the Bureau of Mines, was held at Bismarck, N. Dak., on April 29-30, 1963. These symposia provide a forum for those interested in the technology and utilization of solid fuels, especially lignitic coals. As part of the meeting, a 200-mile field trip was taken including; inspection of (1) the 200-megawatt, pulverized lignit-fired Leland Olds plant of Basin Electric Power Cooperative, under construction near Stanton, N. Dak.; (2) the site of the Glunharold mine of the Truax-Traer Coal Co., Division of Consolidation Coal Co., where a wheel excavator was being assembled; (3) the operating Beulah mine of Knife River Coal Mining Co., subsidiary of Montana-Dakota Utilities Co., near Beulah, N. Dak.; and (4) the 400-megawatt, hydroelectric Garrison Dam powerplant, near Garrison, N. Dak.

"INTRODUCTION Much of the recent progress in increasing the efficiency of oil-well performance can be attributed to advancements in the art of cleaning wells. Through research and development by operators and service companies during the past decade, significant improvements in the application of engineering and chemical principles to well-cleaning technology have widened greatly the scope of ""clean-out"" methods to the end that greater ultimate recovery of oil will be attained.This report reviews recent improvements and developments on this important problem in California; it describes also the use of various methods and tools for cleaning wells to stimulate or revive their productivity. Developments in preventing and removing mud sheaths in well-completion operations also are described. The report is based on a field survey, supplemented by data from the technical and patent literature and from manufacturers' catalogs, which contain much valuable information.In preparing the material for publication as a Bureau of Mines report, the author has been fully aware of certain limiting conditions that attend the discussion of a subject such as that treated in this report. The following are examples:1. To a considerable extent, well cleaning in California is done with tools rented from service companies, and their representatives and employees are specialists in jobs of this type. They usually have working experience with their own equipment and methods which greatly exceeds that of persons whose interest has been casual or who have had no opportunity to study the subject in detail in actual practice. Many of the tools and methods are covered by letters patent for the protection that may be in developing and successfully applying these mechanical and chemical means of increasing the production of wells. Frequently several years have been required to perfect a given tool or technique, requiring relatively large investments to establish a service that is remunerative to those who have primary interest in a certain development and at the same time attractive enough to the operators of producing properties (because of greater quantities of oil delivered into the flow tanks) to warrant employment of or contractual agreements with a particular service group."

A large wedge failure had occurred in the study area which was under construction. Therefore, in order to analyze the potential instability for this rock slope, the authors conducted numerical analysis with DEM and then the behaviour of rock mass was analysed after appropriate reinforce-ments were applied. Ein großer Keildefekt geschah in dem Untersuchungsgebiet, das im Bau befindlich ist. Deshalb, um die potentielle Unbeständigkeit für diesen Felsenabhang zu analysieren, führen die Urheber zahlenmäßige Analyse mit DEM. THE gold mining industry, in Canada as in other countries, has passed through trying times in the past year. The strains and stresses of war have drawn away much of its man-power, both from the labour and the management. The urgent needs of the war machine have greatly curtailed the amounts of steel and explosives that can be allotted to the mines; and the loss, by enemy action, of supplies of such essential things as rubber, bids fair to reduce operations still further, if not cripple them entirely in time. And, as if these difficulties were not enough, war on the psychological front has been declared on the gold mines. Earnest supporters of the war effort, well-meaning theorists, and perhaps others whose intent is less disinterested, have all combined to clamour against the continuance of gold mining. We have been asked, what is the use of taking gold out of one hole in Canada to put it into another in Kentucky. We have been assured that gold will never again have any value, except for filling teeth. We have been repeatedly adjured to look at Germany, how well it has got along without gold. We have been told that it is unthinkable, when this nation is girding her loins for war, that labour and materials should be diverted to this useless effort. Gold miners should be diverted to the base-metal mines, where they can produce something of real value to the war effort; or to war factories; or, in fact, almost anywhere, so long as they are got out of the gold mines. And, what has made the situation even more disturbing, it has seemed as if all this clamour might be convincing governments. In fact, as you all know, the government of the United States did actually take the step of ordering its gold mines to cease operations. Fortunately, however, for Canada, the facts that no large favourable effects resulted from that action, and that, in Canada, gold mining is a much larger part of the national economy than in the United States, have caused our government, so far at least, to avoid this drastic step. In talking about this, however, let me emphasize that I have no more inside information on the subject than any of you. Like Will Rogers, all I know is what I see in the papers.

According to the annual refinery-capacity survey of the Bureau of Mines, the number of refineries in the United States showed little change in 1940, increasing from 057 the first of the year to 562 at the close. Although a number of plants were dismantled in Texas and other States, more than compensating gains were made in California, Illinois, and other States. Low gasoline prices, competition for crude-oil supplies, particularly in Illinois, and the termination of a favorable distributing arrangement for independent plants in the Los Angeles area, forced about 50 refineries to close down in 1940. The number of operating plants accordingly declined from 461 on January 1, 1940 to 420 on January 1, 1941 and the number of idle plants increased from 86 to 136 in the same period. These developments were also reflected in the capacity data, the operating capacity declining from 4,196,694 barrels daily on January 1, 1940 to 4,180,588 daily on January I, 1941 and the idle capacity rising from 431,952 barrels to 53g8381 barrels in the same period. However, the completed capacity on January 1, 1941 (4,718,969 barrels daily) was 2 percent above the previous year.

"In an environment of rising energy prices and mining at greater depths, cost-efficient loading and hauling equipment is essential. Conducted at an underground mining operation, this study analyzes the energy consumption and gas emissions of diesel and electric load-haul-dump machines (LHDs) with similar bucket capacities. Based on energy prices from the first quarter of 2014, results of discrete event simulation show that energy costs for diesel and electric LHDs are US$0.24/t and US$0.07/t, respectively. Also, diesel LHDs emit 2.68 kg CO2 per litre of diesel fuel, whereas using electric machines reduces the need for ventilation to mitigate engine heat and emissions and reduces energy costs.RÉSUMÉ Dans un contexte de croissance des prix de l’énergie et d’exploitation minière à des profondeurs de plus en plus grandes, il est essentiel d’avoir des équipements de chargement et de transport les plus rentables possible. La présente étude, effectuée dans une mine souterraine, analyse la consommation énergétique et les émissions de gaz de chargeuses-navettes (LHD) au diésel et à l’électricité ayant des capacités de godet similaires. En se basant sur les prix courants de l’énergie, les résultats d’une simulation d’événements discrets montrent que les coûts énergétiques pour les LHD au diésel et à l’électricité sont respectivement de 0,24 $US/t et de 0,07 $US/t. De plus, les LHD au diésel émettent 2,68 kg CO2 par litre de combustible diésel alors que les machines utilisant l’électricité réduisent le besoin de ventilation pour atténuer la chaleur des moteurs et les émissions en plus de réduire les coûts énergétiques."

"RÉSUMÉPour maintenir de bonnes performances technique et économique dans l’exploitation par chambres vides (open stope) il est primordial d’assurer un contrôle efficace des limites réelles des chantiers d’abattage. C’est pour cette raison que, de plus en plus souvent, les opérateurs miniers utilisent un dispositif de laser (Cavity Monitoring System: CMS) qui permet de mesurer les dimensions réelles de chantiers en vue de calculer principalement la dilution et les pertes du minerai ainsi que d’autres paramètres. Malheureusement, il n’existe présentement aucune méthodologie commune, qui permettrait d’interpréter ces résultats selon les mêmes critères pour faciliter d’évaluations juste et précise de la réalisation par rapport à la planification en vue d’en apporter de corrections, dans les différentes opérations minières, si nécessaire. Dans la première partie du présent article on discute les principales séquences d’exploitation utilisées dans l’extraction par chambres vides. Par la suite, à l’aide des sections transversales et longitudinales on illustre toutes les phases des travaux miniers. Ceci en vue de permettre au lecteur de comprendre mieux c’est qui peut se passer effectivement dans les chantiers d’abattage. Par après on donne les définitions générales de principaux facteurs de performance technique. Finalement, l’exemple numérique, élaboré à partir des résultats de l’arpentage au laser effectué par la mine Bousquet 2 dans un chantier d’abattage, donne les détails concernant les définitions ainsi que les valeurs de nombreux facteurs de performance technique, qui pourraient être utilisés, par après, par les opérateurs miniers dans le suivi de leurs exploitations souterraines."

THE purpose of this paper is to discuss the practical aspects of locating gravel deposits and of establishing efficient, portable concrete aggregate beneficiation plants for use on construction projects where limited amounts of high-quality gravel and sand are required. Certain projects are listed, in order to demonstrate the wide variety of problems encountered. Routledge Gravel Contractors Limited, North Vancouver, have supplied concrete aggregate for construction projects in British Colum-bia since 1957. In tl1at year, in sup-plying aggregate for a small project at a site on the northern coast of British Columbia, our quote was as follows: Concrete aggregate to specifications, f.o.b. scow, North Vancouver$ 1.75 per cu. yd. Scowing charges to site. $16.00 per cu. yd. At that time, our company realized that more attractive quotations could be submitted if local gravel was utilized where available. Port-able equipment was then acquired and a simple screening plant (Figures 1 and 1a) was at first used. This was later replaced by heavier, more versatile equipment. Annually, the United States uses more than 4 billion tons of new mineral materials, or about 40,000 pounds per person-about half being mineral fuels and the other half being metals and nonmetallics. Stable and economic domestic mining, mineral, metal, and mineral reclamation industries are essential to the economy. The value of United States energy and processed materials of mineral origin exceeds $200 billion annually. Although a number of minerals are imported, especially some designated as "strategic and critical," most U.S. mineral supplies are derived from the domestic mines and processing facilities that you will be seeing, reading about, and visiting as you use this visitor guide. We hope you enjoy your experiences. This pamphlet, a guide to mining and mineral operations that may be observed or visited and some other points of interest relating to minerals, is in-tended to aid tourists and students who are interested in mining. Some may wish to study our Nation&apos;s romantic past; others may plan to enter the minerals industry as a career; still others may have a primary interest in conservation practices. The pamphlet is also intended to aid State and local officials, Chambers of Commerce, and mining firms in answering some of the many questions of tourists and students.

"SUMMARYThe K.M.A. reservoir was discovered to be oil bearing at a depth of 3,719 feet on March 11, 1931. Extensive development, however, was not begun immediately, because the discovery well had a low initial daily oil production, and market conditions for oil were unfavorable. Development of the field progressed slowly for the next 6 1/2 years. In the latter part of 1937, a wildcat well approximately 2 miles southwest of the discovery well was drilled on a magnetometer high and completed with an initial flowing production of 2,016 barrels of 43° A.P.I.-gravity oil in 12 hours. Rapid development of the southwestern part of the K.M.A. field was begun immediately and continued until over 700 wells were drilled and approximately 12,500 acres proved oil productive.Because of the large size of the entire K.M.A. field, this report is limited in scope to the southwestern part only, and the discussion that follows pertains to this area only. The closing date for production statistics is August 1, 1949.The K.M.A. structure is a complex anticline having a maximum closure of 250 feet, and the K.M.A. formation is composed of sediments that grade from limestone through sandy lime and limy sand to sandstone with thin streaks of shale. Two distinct members of the K.M.A. formation, zone I and zone II, are oil productive. Core analyses indicate the average porosity to be 16.5 percent for zone I and 16.1 percent for zone II. A relationship was established from core data, which showed the correlative permeabilities to be 42.1 millidarcys for zone I and 39.5 millidarcys for zone II, whereas the arithmetical averages of the permeabilities were 84 millidarcys for zone I and 216 millidarcys for zone II. Connate water saturations were 17.5 percent for zone I and 20.0 percent for zone II. The porosity-saturation method, using a thickness-correction factor, was employed to calculate the volume c 168.1 million barrels of stock-tank oil initially in place in the reservoir. Analyses of the reservoir oilIn that, although the initial reservoir pressure was 1,750 p.s.i., the original reservoir oil was saturated to only 1,300 at which pressure 1 barrel of stock,tank oil contained 525 cubic feet of gas in solution.A serious decline in reservoir pressure during the 2 years of rapid development alarmed the operators and caused them to consider a cooperative pressure-maintenance program. In the latter part of 1939, the K.M.A. Pressure Maintenance Association was organized, and the gasoline plants in the field agreed to process the wet gas and return the dry gas to leases having gas-injection wells. Approximately 27 percent of the cumulative volume of produced gas had been returned to the reservoir by August 1, 1949."

The United States Bureau of Mines is establishing a computerized mineral inventory system to help the Federal Government appraise its mineral position and prepare programs insuring against critical shortages of materials. This system, called the Minerals Availability System (MAS), is a component of the Bureau&apos;s minerals intelligence function designed to conduct and maintain an inventory of minerals important to the Nation. The MAS defines the physical and commercial availability of the mineral resources. Known resources are evaluated and classified by deposit for entry into a computer storage and retrieval system. An integral concern of these evaluations is the cost of mining and beneficiating the ore contained in specific deposits. To meet this concern, a cost handbook was developed as an aid to preparing feasibility-type estimates for capital and operating costs of mining and primary beneficiation of various types of mineral occurrences. Cost data, obtained from U.S. and Canadian companies, were used as the basis of this handbook. The handbook presents cost curves and equations for each component of the mining and beneficiation process. Factors for each cost component are also given, thereby allowing the updating of cost for time, geographic location, labor rates, and mining and milling conditions. Included in the latter conditions are items such as the length of haul, need for rock bolts, and a rock work index for ores and rocks of various hardnesses. 1.2. USE OF THE HANDBOOK Using the handbook a feasibility-type estimate falling within 25% of expected actual cost is obtainable by summarizing cost components. This handbook should not be used to determine the cost of any single component of a mining or beneficiation system, as any single component may not fall within the 257 limit. It must be understood that anyone who uses the handbook must have a comprehensive knowledge of mining and processing technology and cost estimating procedures. La Direction générale du développement de l?Industrie minérale (DGDIM) du ministère des Ressources naturelles et de la Faune (MRNF) du Québec tient un inventaire de toute l?activité minière sur le territoire. Cet inventaire s?est enrichi, au cours des dernières années, d?un grand nombre de projets dédiés au fer ou à des substances qui y sont associées (titane, vanadium, phosphate). Actuellement, cinq régions du Québec sont principalement touchées par la recrudescence de projets dédiés au fer : Fermont, Schefferville, Baie d?Ungava, Baie-James et Chibougamau. Fermont et Schefferville sont les régions les plus actives. Les infrastructures en place, telles que les routes, les chemins de fer, les ports, les lignes électriques et les municipalités, ont atteint, dans certains cas, leur capacité et de nouvelles infrastructures devront être construites pour satisfaire les besoins. À la Baie-James et sur le flanc ouest de la Baie d?Ungava, des projets d?exploration sont aussi en cours. Le manque d?infrastructure pourrait peser lourd sur le développement de projets miniers dans ces régions. Enfin, dans le secteur Chibougamau/Matagami et à quelques sites ailleurs au Québec, des projets d?exploration qui visent le vanadium, le titane ou le phosphate pourraient aussi fournir comme produit secondaire des concentrés de fer. Tous les projets, décrits dans cet article, sont situés sur le territoire du Plan Nord du gouvernement du Québec.
