During August, 1926, with the consent of Mr. Schell, mine manager, the writer conducted a mill test on this company's concentrators. Mr. Schell not only gave him his permission, but rendered all possible assistance. Although it was impossible to take all the samples one could have wished to obtain, yet the salient points of the mill flow-sheet were sampled for a continuous period of eight hours, and from these samples and separate data supplied by the manager, valuable information was collected.THE MINEThis is a true vein-type of mine; the lode formations, striking almost due north-south, cut the large porphyritic intrusion at right angles. Graphite, a mineral form of pure carbon, is one of the most versatile minerals in industry, because of its varying physical properties and characteristics. The mineral occurs naturally in the form of tubular crystals or microcrystalline earthy lumps, or it is disseminated in rocks, which have undergone intense metamorphism. India has a large deposition of graphite minerals out of which about 43% are found in Arunachal Pradesh. However, compared to the rest of the country, the North-East Region and particularly Arunachal Pradesh has not attracted attention till date for detail investigation for characterization, beneficiation, prospecting and/or exploitation of the mineral resources including graphite. Bulk graphite sample were collected from upper Subanshiri district of Arunachal Pradesh. Chemical analysis of the representative samples were carried out and found that 7.29%, 19.60% and 6.07% of fixed carbon (FC) is present in graphite sample collected from La-Lamdak, Bopi and Taliha, Arunachal Pradesh, respectively. Chemical analysis of the ash of the graphite sample shows presence of impurities such as silica, Al2O3, Fe2O3, Ca, Mg etc in the graphite sample which are also supported by XRD and SEM-EDX investigation. The graphite samples of Arunachal Pradesh are low grade and do not fulfill the market requirement for the industrial applications. Therefore, low-grade graphite is subjected to beneficiation for the upgradation of the graphite for industrial applications. We have adopted the dispersion?cum-settling technique for the beneficiation of the graphite sample collected from Arunachal Pradesh. The FC of 40.21% with 41.17% raw graphite recovery which is equivalent to 71.02% carbon recovery have been obtained by gravity separation technique using only distilled water without any chemical reagent in case of graphite sample collected from Bopi, Arunachal Pradesh. The graphite sample is upgraded up to 47.75% FC with 41.91% raw graphite recovery, which is equivalent to 85.85% carbon recovery with the pH adjustment at 9 with NaOH. The Channar Iron Ore Mining Project (the Project) is a joint venture involving the Hamersley Holdings group (Hamersley) and the China Metallurgical Import and Export Corporation (CMIEC). The Project represents the first new iron ore mine development in Australia since 1971/72 and is the first major overseas mining investment by the People's Republic of China (PRC). The Channar mine is being constructed in the Pilbara region of Western Australia and will operate for more than 20 years supplying the PRC with 200 M tonne of high grade iron ore. The Project is configured to take advantage of Hamersley's existing production and support facilities. The Joint Venturers will invest A$280 million to achieve an initial production rate of 3 M tonne/yr and an additional A$120 million over the next 8 years to achieve full capacity of 10 M tonne/yr. Financing the Project to meet the requirements of both Hamersley and CMIEC, with the dependance of the Project on Hamersley's infrastructure, and in a depressed iron ore market, required an innovative financial structure to be arranged in a limited period. This paper describes both the financial structure and its implementation, and draws a number of conclusions regarding the financing of resource projects.

Up until 1990 CoalCorp North Island's accident record was six times that considered acceptable in those NSW operations with good accident prevention programmes. This was an obvious avoidable burden on the company in both human and cost terms.   Late in 1989 an accident prevention programme was implemented with the objective of achieving a 50 per cent reduction in the lost time accident frequency rate within 12 months. The key to achieving this objective was recognised as being an attitude change in the total workforce from General Manager downward. Management commitment and action were seen to be critical to the success of the programme.   Through very basic and simple training programmes in accident investigation, analysis and reporting, communication, on-the-job coaching and in focusing on improving supervision skills, the original objective was achieved.   During 1991 the application of methods improvement and hazard recognition techniques are seen as the logical step to achieving a further 50 per cent reduction in the accident frequency rate.

This paper reviews the use of crush pillars on mines in the Bushveld Complex and the Witwatersrand Supergroup. Stress measurements were undertaken in order to determine the residual strength of these crush pillars. The results from these stress measurements are compared with previous attempts to determine the residual strength of crush pillars using back analysis. It is concluded that the residual strength of such crush pillars lies in a band between 13 MPa and 25MPa. Using the data from the stress measurements, as well as published and unpublished data, a stress-strain curve for a crush pillar with a width-to-height ratio of 2:1 is proposed. Where further work is required, this is indicated in the text.

Quality control is essential for augered cast-in-place (ACIP) piles (also known as continuous flight auger (CFA) piles outside the United States) and drilled displacement (DD) piles since the pile is constructed below the ground surface out of the direct sight of the personnel constructing and inspecting the pile. ACIP piles are being successfully constructed to support high-rise structures, hospitals, arenas and stadiums, mass transit systems, and power and industrial facilities. The use of DD pile technology is also gaining ground in the United States, typically utilizing proprietary systems such as Omega (currently utilized by Richard Goettle Inc., and LG Barcus and Sons, Inc.), Berkel, and DeWal (currently utilized by Morris-Shea). Different types of ACIP/DD pile installation equipment are shown in Figures 1 and 2. ACIP piles are installed into granular and cohesive soils, and soft rock to lengths currently approaching 130 ft (39.5 m), with diameters up to 24 to 36 inches (610 to 915 mm), and sustaining design loads approaching 900 kips (4000 kN). Current DD pile installation equipment in the United States is capable of installing up to 79-ft-long (24 m) piles with diameters ranging from 12 to 18 inches (305 mm to 460 mm).

Air and water pollution and land reclamation relating to coal mining and utilization continued to be featured in research and technologic work on coal by the Bureau of Mines in 1967. Details of the environmental studies are given in this report, along with accounts of other research relating to the mining and utilization of coal. Other studies that were continued during 1967 included health and safety, mine explosives, coal preparation and transportation, coal utilization processes, chemistry and properties of coal, inspection and analysis, and inter-national activities. Publications issued in 1967 are cited throughout the report and in appendix C. Bureau of Mines research centers and laboratories are listed in appendix A, and organizations contributing to or cooperating in the work, in appendix B.

Researchers from the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) completed field trials during coal mine rescue contests using simulated gas detectors in place of placards. The gas monitor simulator (GMS) devices replaced static, paper placards to deliver gas concentration data. Eleven teams were observed during the field contest, which was approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). GMS devices were given to three team members, the captain, and both gasmen. Observation of teams revealed that team members changed behavior by acknowledging and sharing information more often while using the GMS. As a result of this research, it has been demonstrated that under the existing contest format, the newly developed GMS device may be used with no adverse impact on team contest performance. Furthermore, when GMS technology advantages are used, contest realism is improved. In the future, competency assessment may be incorporated.

Several Approaches to Enhance the Bioleaching of Enargite Some approaches were investigated to enhance the recovery of Cu from enargite by bioleaching with Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans using the galvanic interaction with pyrite and activated carbon, and with thermophilic bacteria, Acidianus brierleyi. Addition of pyrite initially enhanced Cu leaching by the Galvanic effect, but after that the formation of secondary minerals passivated the surface of enargite in inoculated batches. Activated carbon improved Cu recovery from enargite much better than pyrite, when it is contacted with enargite. Recovery of Cu from enargite has been recorded to at largest 2.4 per cent within 30 days in the presence of activated carbon when mesophilic bacteria were inoculated at 25¦C. The recovery of Cu from enargite was drastically enhanced by inoculation of thermophilic bacteria, Acidianus brierleyi, up to 60 per cent within 40 days at 70¦C and still not leveled off after 40 days unless the formation of Fe(III) precipitates occurred. After 40 days dissolved molar ratio of Cu/As is around 5.2, suggesting that metal-deficient sulfides and/or ferric arsenate might be formed on the surface of enargite.

Step 4: Selection of explosives and initiation system Various types of explosives are manufactured in India and a wide choice is available among them that include nitroglycerin based explosives, slurries, emulsions, ANFO (ammonium nitrate mixed with fuel oil) and heavy ANFO. The choice is also available between cartridged and bulk loading systems. In Indian mines, much importance is unduly given to the cost of explosives alone which is not conducive to optimization of blast design parameters. The concept of energy per meter of blasthole and the way in which the total explosive energy is partitioned between shock and heave is not considered in the prevailing practices. Besides, very little efforts are made to objectively evaluate the performance of explosives for a given site condition. Tailoring explosives is limited to changing the density of the bulk explosives. Cartridged explosives are still being extensively used in large operations where bulk explosives should be the preferred choice.

In an effort to improve efficiencies and reduce costs, AngloGold has embarked on a process to develop and deliver consistent, high quality, tailings based support or construction products to stopes and tunnels on request. A three-phase approach of product conceptualisation, design and delivery has been adopted. To date a substantial amount of laboratory development has taken place with promising results, indicating that the project aims are achievable. Taking the third meridian as the eastern boundary of proved payable auriferous country, there is a stretch of country, nearly 600 miles in width, in which no appreciable amount of gold has yet been discovered. Many prospectors have attempted to .penetrate or traverse it, but comparatively few have thought it worth while proceeding with the examination.The desolate stretch of waterless desert-the very few and insignificant outcrops through the sand and the almost total absence of feed for horses have, combined, presented such a barrier as to preclude prospecting. The few who have traversed the country are eloquent in denunciation, yet their investigations, necessarily hurried, are not quite satisfactory. The absence of water utterly debars a thorough examination being made. Gold may exist in quantity, yet it would have to be extraordinarily plentiful to render its obtaining profitable. Too fantastic is the idea of its ever being a mining district; shifting sand to traverse, utter absence of wood and water render the notion absurd. Likely looking belts occur, but these in all "cases are small and remote from water. Gold has been obtained from likely look ing quartz reefs, but only by fire assay, and then but a few do to the ton. Without wishing to be pessimistic, I would unhesitatingly declare that east of the third meridian, and between the parallels 25 and 30 degrees in West Australia, there is no gold in payable quantities.

In longwall development mining of coal seams, planning, optimizing and providing adequate ventilation are very important steps to eliminate the accumulation of explosive methane-air mixtures in the working environment. Mine operators usually try to supply maximum ventilation air based on the capacity of the system and the predicted need underground. This approach is neither economical nor safer as ventilation capacity may decrease in time depending on various mining and coalbed parameters. Thus, it is important to develop better engineered approaches to optimize mine ventilation effectiveness and, therefore, to ensure a safer work environment. This study presents an approach using coalbed methane reservoir modeling and an artificial neural network (ANN) design for prediction and optimization of methane inflows and ventilation air requirements to maintain methane concentrations below statutory limits. A coalbed reservoir model of a three-entry development section, which is typical of Pittsburgh Coalbed mines in the Southwestern Pennsylvania section of Northern Appalachian Basin, was developed taking into account the presence and absence of shielding boreholes around the entries against methane inflow. In the model, grids were dynamically controlled to simulate the advance of mining for parametric simulations. Development and application of artificial neural networks as an optimization tool for ventilation requirements are introduced. Model predictions are used to develop, train, and test artificial neural networks to optimize ventilation requirements. The sensitivity and applications of proposed networks for predicting simulator data are presented and discussed. Results show that reservoir simulations and integrated ANN models can be practical and powerful tools for predicting methane emissions and optimization of ventilation air requirements.

El presente trabajo describe el proceso de optimizacion en la fundición de precipitados de oro y plata en la refinería de la mina Pierina a través del control de los diversos parámetros que involucra dicho proceso. Para ello, se trabajó con composiciones ternarias cercanas al punto peritéctico y asi procesar adecuadamente el tipo de precipitado. Entre sus principales logros de optimización tenemos: el incremento de oro y plata, el rendimiento de los crisoles, la reducción de los costos por consumo de reactivos y el mantenimiento de la calidad del precipitado.

The evolution of surface mine layout configuration is a function of the schedules and sequence of material excavation within the optimized layouts. The production schedules and sequence of materials movement from multi-bench and multi-face operations are difficult to plan and execute. However, the ability to maximize the profit or net present value of an orebody is largely dependent on the mining schedule. The mining schedule will determine the life of the mine, the projected cashflows, and the investment requirements over the mine life. The pit geometries, pit expansion rates and the periodic volume of materials from different benches in a multi-bench, multi-face open pit mine determine the equipment requirements. The volume of materials excavated, as well as pit layout changes from circular and elliptical geometries of an oil sands mine were modeled using analytical geometric and parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) and solved within Matlab. The results show that the geometric values are almost the same as those obtained from PDEs for different pit configurations. The economic analysis shows that both the current mining system (CMS) and the cyclic excavator conveyor belt control system (CycEx CBCS) are viable with high NPV (= $3.20 × 1010), PI (> 19%) and IRR (> 29.02%) with short discounted payback periods (= 3.24 months). The CycEx CBCS option is more economic than the CMS option. Its NPV is 1.27 times that of the CMS option. The PI and IRR for the CycEx CBCS option are respectively 2.24 and 1.13 times that of the CMS option. As well, the CycEx CBCS option has almost half the DPBP of the CMS option. The CMS option has an operating cost of $1.386 per tonne ($2.774/barrel) while that of the CycEx CBCS option is $0.779/tonne ($1.558/barrel). These results show that the CycEx CBCS option is the better option for mining companies working on oil sands deposits to invest in.

IN the opencut iron mines of the Mesabi Range in Minnesota, the trend in mining is in the development of mining equipment and mining methods which will move surface overburden and ore-bearing materials with less labor and at a cheaper cost. This is a must for most of the independent operators. Their reserves of direct-shipping ore are extremely small and their operations are being conducted in small, or intermediate pits, with a high stripping ratio in the outer fringes, or shore lines of older pits. and in ore bodies passing from direct shipping to the washing and the intermediate, or retreat ore state. The trend is toward deeper stripping, longer and steeper hauls, and the necessity of moving a total of from three to five or six tons of overburden and ore material for each ton of shipping-grade ore produced. This naturally calls for greater production, with larger shovels, or draglines. cheaper drilling and blasting costs through the drilling of larger-diameter blastholes, and cheaper haulage through the use of trucks of larger capacity and more extensive use of belt-conveyor systems. This trend is notable both in stripping and mining.

The final criterion of the payability of gold production must necessarily be the cost per ounce. While the cost per ton or per cubic yard is a convenient comparative measure, and a necessary one for operating control, it is obviously insufficient as a means of judging whether or not, in a given set of circumstances, a gold production operation can be carried out economically.. An alternative method, which brings in the ton or cubic yard as a unit of measurement, is to determine what the cost per ton or per cubic yard is equivalent to, in terms of pennyweights or grains at the ruling price of gold. But this is really only another way of stating that the cost per unit of product is the ultimate measure of profit or loss, and not the cost per unit of input material.It is accordingly of interest to determine the cost per ounce of Australian gold production and to compare it with the cost of gold production in some other parts of the world which are important gold producers. The attached Appendix, which it, is believed comprises practically all Australian mines of any consequence (except Big Bell and the de Bernales group, for which. insufficient information is available), shows this information for financial years ending between 31st December, 1938, and 31st December, 1939, the production of gold dealt with being some 1,084,000 oz., or 66% of the total Australian production for 1939. For comparative purposes the cost of producing gold at representative mines in New Guinea, New Zealand, Fiji, Canada, India, West Africa and Rhodesia, and the average cost of production at the Rand mines, has also been included.It is obviously necessary in a study of this sort that the basis of the cost should be clearly set out and should be as nearly as possible uniform. A unique judicial opportunity allowed measurement of the response of three cracks in residential structure to blasting for underground aggregate mining. Instrumented cracks were located in the interior basement CMU mortar and upstairs dry wall as well as exterior brickwork. The dynamic environment was unusual. Even though the blasting occurred some 490 m (1600 ft) away, excitation frequencies were unusually high and there were no apparent surface waves. In addition there was no air overpressure wave to produce secondary crack response. As is typical, long term environmental effects produced greater crack response than did the blast induced ground motions.

High-Mg-content concentrates are usually treated in Jinchuan flash smelting Furnace. Because the viscosities of high-Mg-content slag is very high, the operation of flash smelting becomes very difficult. To solve this problem, the viscosities of the semi-synthesized FeO-MgO-SiO2 slag of different compositions were measured. The results showed that when in the slag the weight percentage of MgO [w(MgO)] is 6-10%, the ratio of the weight percentage of iron to that of Si02, w(Fe)/w(Si02) is 1.1-1.4 and the temperatures are within 1473-1773K, the slag viscosities increased with the increase of W(MgO) and w(Fe)/w(SiO,). When w(Mgo)<6%, the smelting temperature should be controlled at I 300°C in order to to keep the smooth operation. When w(MgO)>10%, the temperature should be kept above I 633K. When the content of MgO is higher, a lower viscosity slag can be produced by decreasing the ratio of w(Fe)/w(SiO,). The appropriate ratio of w(Fe)/w(SiO,) for Jinchuan flash smelting furnace is about 1.2.
