"The Mount Douglas Granite constitutes the eastern part of the Saint George Batholith and contains the youngest, most differentiated phases of the batholith. It also contains extensive endogranitic, low-grade. Sn- W-Mo-bearing sheeted vein systems. Early phases of the Mount Douglas Granite are coarse- to medium-grained, seriate granites that represent the slowly cooled carapace of the intrusion. Late phases are medium- to fine-grained, equigranular and porphyritic granites that were accompanied by repeated and widespread fracturing of the carapace and injection of mineralizing fluids. These granites represent a highly differentiated suite with ""A "" type affinities developed in a ""within plate"" transitional to ""syn-collision"" tectonic setting. 4oAr/ 39Ar dates for biotites from the various phases indicate emplacement circa 367 Ma.The linear distribution of some phases in the Mount Douglas Granite and the systematic orientations of sheeted veins along tensional fractures indicate structural control on granite emplacement and vein distribution. This type of relatively passive endogranitic mineralization is unique in the granites of southern New Brunswick and contrasts markedly with highly fluidized systems operative elsewhere in the area. IntroductionInvestigation of Sn-W-Mo occurrences in New Brunswick has shown that most of this mineralization is associated with late, highly differentiated phases of post-orogenic (Acadian) granitoid magmatism that occurred during Devonian and Early Carboniferous time (Ruitenberg and Fyffe, 1982; Taylor et al., 1988). The polymetallic Mount Pleasant Sn-W-Mo deposit (Ruitenberg, 1967, 1972; Kooiman et al., 1986)and the Burnt Hill W deposit are two orebodies of this type in New Brunswick. Numerous smaller deposits associated with these granitoid rocks in southwestern New Brunswick have been documented in previous investigations (Ruitenberg, 1967, 1968; Ruitenberg and Fyffe, 1982; Taylor et al., 1985; Lentz, 1985)."

A cut-off wall has been designed and is currently under construction along the Back Dam of the existing tailings impoundment at Red Dog Mine, Alaska. The cut-off wall, which will be in the order of 5,000 ft long and up to 150 ft deep, when complete, is being excavated using a 40 metric ton Bauer trench cutter head mounted on a Liebherr crawler crane, in combination with a closed loop slurry pumping and de-sanding system. The tailings impoundment is situated in an area of warm permafrost and high potential seismic activity. Design incorporated an assessment of rock jointing to define the final depth of the wall along the alignment requiring the use of plastic concrete backfill to address the concerns associated with potential cracking of the wall due to settlement and during seismic activity. The results of the geotechnical investigation program, particularly with respect to variation in rock hardness along the wall alignment are discussed, as are the design criteria for the plastic concrete backfill, the challenges faced during construction, including scheduling of the work with the on-going dam raise activities of the mine, and the lessons learned with respect to potential productivities and selection of cutter wheels and teeth. Also described are the requirements for and advantages of utilizing a slurry boosting system to meet pumping requirements, re-design of the plastic concrete mix to consider workability and optimization of cutter teeth configurations to reduce wear through highly varied rock hardness.

As the first barrier to prevent accidents caused by explosions in underground coal mines, the integrity and stability of mine seals have great effects on mine workers’ lives and underground production safety. In this paper, the mechanical responding performance of typical mine seals under the impact load are studied by using numerical simulation method. By such simulation studies, the safety of different seals subjected to the explosion load is evaluated. Seals’stability are also investigated under effects caused by various influence factors including thickness of mine seal, cutting depth into surrounding rocks, rock type, and the roof-tofloor convergence under given the explosion load. The research results can provide theoretical basis and reasonable improvements for mine seal’s construction practices for improving its anti-explosion performance.

"There are a number of environmental incentives for increasing recycling, including the reduction of waste, energy and resource use. Recycling can also be advantageous for manufacturing firms in both the short and long term. Secondary material can substitute for primary material, potentially dampening primary material price increases and reducing the pressure for greater primary extraction. This paper examines the potential for and dynamics of recycling for the case of platinum using a dynamic, behavioral simulation model of the primary and secondary markets. Since the secondary supply of platinum depends on a supply chain separate from primary extraction, recycling can diversify the risks of primary supply instabilities. Over time, recycling can cut primary consumption, reduce overall costs to firms, and possibly reduce the impact of price fluctuations upon firms.IntroductionThe benefits of recycling, from the perspective of the environment, are many, and the environmental benefits of increased recycling are considered a step towards increased sustainability [1, 2]. Life cycle assessments indicate that obtaining materials from secondary sources generally requires less energy and has fewer environmental impacts than extraction and refining of primary materials [3]. Analyses of materials flows show that, in addition to landfill volume reduction, recycling reduces primary material consumption, affecting long term materials scarcity [4, 5].The benefits of recycling are not limited to the environmental. Firms can benefit from the lower energy costs of recycling, especially that of metals whose primary extraction and refining are particularly energy-intensive (e.g., aluminum). The routine participation by firms in secondary materials markets (e.g., www.recycle.net) shows that this advantage has not gone unnoticed.Recycling can also benefit firms whose costs can be significantly affected by changes in material prices resulting from material shortages and material scarcity, with potentially permanent effects upon firms [6-8]. This paper focuses on the impact of recycling in the face of platinum scarcity for supply chain downstream firms."

Suncor Oil Sands employs delayed coking technology in converting bitumen into synthetic crude oil. Currently up to 10,000 m3 of delayed coke (coke) is produced per day as a byproduct of the upgrading process, of which up to 9,000 m3 per day is placed in dry storage on Lease 86/17. A review was completed to examine the case history of leachate potential experiments from the dry storage of coke and the environmental relevance of coke leachate studies conducted over the past decade. The review included an evaluation of the potential impacts of environmental conditions within the location of coke storage, including precipitation pH, as well as daily and annual ozone trends. Coke leachate potential has historically been characterized using standard leachate testing protocols (i.e., TLCP, SPLP) together with other studies that have employed strong acids and oxidizing agents in the extraction fluids. The present paper highlights prevailing conditions in the Athabasca Valley air-shed with emphasis given to ambient ozone (oxidizers), as well as precipitation pH and acid input deposition rates, and will demonstrate that TCLP / SPLP tests lack the intended environmental relevance relative to the conditions under which coke is stored.

In fluctuating airflow, continuous air velocity recording is the most reliable method of air velocity measurement. It allows for fast recognition of changes and the calculation of long-term averages. Also, it enables the mine operator to identify when the airflow has decreased to a point requiring action. Using ultrasonic anemometers provides an accurate option for continuous air velocity monitoring. This paper provides information about the effect of common obstructions in underground mining on air velocity readings. Stationary and moving obstructions are used to represent workers and equipment that would cause discrepancies in measured airflow. Also, it is important to know how large of a sample size is required to ensure reasonable accuracy of results. Statistical analysis is used to evaluate the required sample size. The sampling procedure is further studied by comparing two different sample rates. The results show that obstructions provide noticeable differences in air velocity measurements. Also, movement of obstructions can be recognized from changes in results. Surprisingly small sample sizes provide reliable air velocity information. Standard sample rates are found to be suitable for the underground environment.

North of Antwerp central train station, two single-track tunnels for the high-speed train line between Brussels and Amsterdam were constructed. At the same time, the central train station was modified to a through station. Both 1.23 km tunnels are situated in the Antwerp sands and were constructed using a slurry shield machine. Due to the inner city location, the tunnels run over their entire length underneath structures, in some cases with only minimal clearance. The paper deals with these challenging situations. In addition, the tunnel boring machine, the tunnel lining and measures to limit settlements will be introduced.

In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the role that individual factors play in health and safety (H&S) outcomes in the mining industry. Two surveys, one measuring self-reported routine safety performance and one measuring individual perceived competence in the non-routine knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) critical to emergency response, were administered to two samples of mineworkers in separate research studies over a 2-year period (N=2,020 and 696, respectively). Eight demographic items were common to both surveys and their associations with each performance outcome were tested in response to a series of exploratory research questions.

Missouri River Division (FORD), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE), has completed (October 1982) a study for the U.S. Air Force Ballistic Missile Office, in which desireable and needed changes in contracting methods for underground construction were identified. Due to the importance of geotechnical considerations in such construction, a good number of the resulting recommendations relate to geotechnical considerations. Corps contracts have traditionally served as models for contract documentation by public agencies and in private enterprise. Several standard features of present-day contracting methods were Corps innovations. Corps officials are generally in agreement with the recommendations of the Better Contracting reports published by the U.S. National Research Council (NAS/NRC), through its U.S. National Committee on Tunneling Technology (USNCTT). However, the findings of the 1982 MRD study indicate that additional changes are warranted for underground construction contracting methods; changes that deal specifically with site geological conditions, both known and to be reasonably anticipated, as well as with their associated impacts on construction. The 1982 MRD report identifies the need for nine specific improvements in geotechnical aspects of contracting; improvements based on recognition of geological conditions.

For many years the scrubbing of roaster gas carrying sulphur dioxide has been carried out at the plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd. at Risdon, Tasmania, using long horizontal tubes. in which the gas stream crossed a shower of water. In order to provide for increased roaster capacity, it was evident that additional gas scrubbing capacity would be required to prevent pollution of the atmosphere.This provided an opportunity to review the whole operation of gas scrubbing and an investigation was initiated to determine the characteristics of a counter-current type of scrubber. It was hoped that a change to this type of scrubbing would also reduce the sulphur dioxide concentration of the gas delivered to the atmosphere to a negligible amount. This, paper outlines results obtained from an experimental tower which was operated under a wide range of conditions, the packing height, gas flow, water flow, water temperature, and concentration of S02 in inlet gas being varied independently. A description is given of the leading features and operating characteristics of the plant units, which are designed on the basis of the experimental results. Operation of the new scrubbing system commenced on October 5th, 1948.THE PROBLEMThe gas which is handled carries S02 which may vary in concentration from 2% to 5%, and reaches the scrubbing system at a temperature of approximately 180 deg. C. An appreciable amount of suspended material accompanies the gas which has passed the cyclone system.

Construction projects are becoming more demanding both in terms of time and complexity. This necessitates intricate planning and sequencing of activities at the macro and micro level and continuous flow of resources across the project in order to achieve planned targets. Work and Resource planning need to be done in such a way that limited resources give optimal output. Currently dominant activity-based scheduling techniques like Critical Path Method (CPM) and Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) do not model work-flow or resource-flow through a project life cycle. An extension to the conventional activity based planning is Location Based Management System (LBMS). LBMS has been explored and utilised in the case of repetitive and cyclic projects such as high rise buildings. This study focusses on the application of LBMS to repetitive and non-repetitive components of Power Transmission and Distribution (PT&D) projects involving construction of substation and cable laying. This paper presents the findings on comparing the current planning practice for cable laying with an LBMS based approach. A key finding of the study was that the conventional practice resulted in a schedule with several coordination issues that could not be identified in the planning reports. Using the LBMS based approach these issues could be identified and decisions required for resolving these could be made.

Many future and current block and panel caves extract ore from veined rock masses. These rock masses are composed of open joints forming blocks or rock with healed networks of veinlets. These two types of discontinuities pose a challenge for rock mass characterisation and classification due to difficulties in distinguishing actually open joints from healed but weak veins when diamond core drilling and excavation blasting practices disturb the rock mass. The inability of separating characteristics of open joints and healed veins has often resulted in an underestimation of the rock mass quality and as a consequence led to inappropriate assessments of rock mass response to mining (ie rock mass behaviour) and consequently deficient excavation stability assessments and ground support designs. In this paper, guidelines are provided to improve the characterisation and classification of veined rock masses. It is shown how veined rock masses can be mischaracterised resulting in often incorrect forecasting of rock mass behaviour. Following this, the classification of veined rock masses is examined. It is shown how the primary classification systems (ie Q – Barton, Lien and Lunde, 1974; rock mass rating (RMR) – Bieniawski, 1976) may not lead to reliable ratings in veined rock masses if care is not taken to differentiate between open joints and veins of varying strength. Examples are provided to illustrate how the Q and RMR systems are insensitive to veining. Introduction "Austerity" is perhaps an overly generous description of the past three years in the American steel industry. Steel plants operated at an average of only 57% of their capability in 1982-84. The dismal losses for last year are still being totaled. But during the two years before this period, American steelmakers recorded an aggregate net loss of a staggering $6.8 billion. Steelmakers responded by closing numerous marginal facilities. And production capability was cut by 13.6 Mt (15 million st). Capital expenditures still averaged $2 billion annually. But this was inadequate to maintain the existing base of steelmaking facilities. The general economy experienced a satisfactory recovery during this period. American steel, however, continued to suffer from a lagging recovery in the capital goods sector. This was due to record penetration of its domestic market by imports and from very weak realizing prices on the volume that was available. In addition to the direct influx of offshore steel products - which itself depressed prices - the industry also became painfully aware of the growing importance of "indirect" imports. These came in the form of steel-containing producer and consumer durables. Industrial equipment and autos fabricated from foreign steel accounted for the equivalent of 6 Mt (6.5 million st) of lost market opportunity for domestic steel-makers last year. That is over and above the 23.5 Mt (26 million st) of direct steel imports. Given these factors, Inland Steel was not spared from the threeyear downpour of red ink. Despite its record of continuing modernization in steel, our single-plant location in the world's best steel-consuming market, and the high proportion of consumer durables related products, such as cold rolled and coated sheet in our mix, Inland suffered aggregate losses of $277 million during the 1982-84 period. Strategic Planning The foregoing establishes a perspective - a base from which we have restructured our view of the steel industry, and of our own role within that picture. Until possibly two years ago, this present weakness in steel demand was viewed around the world as an aberration, eventually to pass. By contrast, it is now recognized that austere times are the normal steel environment. The topic here is management of resources. This implies an emphasis on strategic planning. It is worthwhile to examine some of the more critical assumptions that were driving strategies among a number of steel companies just before the 1980s. Those projected characteristics of the future steel environment were arrived at through painstaking analysis. They were carefully and heavily quantified and were generally shared by outside observers and our peers within the steel industry. • First, the assumption was made that domestic steel demand would continue to grow at an average rate of 2% per year. • Second, it was assumed that this growth in the American market would continue to be filled predominantly by US mills. This paper describes mining and milling methods of the American Smelting & Refining Co. at the Morning mine in the Mullan area of the Coeur d'Alene mining region in Idaho and is one of a series of Bureau of Mines reports dealing with methods and costs of mining throughout the United States. The Morning mine has been described previously in a Bureau of Mines report published in 1930,2/ and the milling methods and costs at the Morning concentrator were presented in a Bureau of Mines report published in 1932. 3/ These reports are supplemented by this publication, which presents data to show the effect of changing times and conditions on a typical medium-size mining operation during the latter part of its history, when costs were rising and production was from increasingly greater depths. The report contrasts two periods in the history of the mine-periods not too far separated in years but considerably different in economic conditions. During the first period (1939) costs of labor and materials were moderate, mining operations were just being transferred from the main shaft to deeper workings opened from the offset shaft, and the operation prospered. During the second period (12 years later) production costs had increased following the national trend in all industry, mining was from greater depths near the bottom of the ore body, and the operation was becoming unprofitable. Mining on the lower levels of the property ceased in 1953.

PACMANUS is an actively-forming seafloor analogue of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide orebodies, situated on the crest of an andesite-dacite-rhyodacite ridge overlying rifted older arc crust in a back-arc basin. Hydrothermal deposits range from Mn-oxide crusts to Cu-Zn-rich massive sulfide mounds and chimneys containing significant Au and Ag. Preliminary data suggest a substantial magmatic component to fluids and metal sources, and we speculate that PACMANUS is the cap to a complete hydrothermal system including subvolcanic and intrusive-related mineralisation.

"An introduction and case study of Mintek's latest generation of Milling Circuit controller, the MillStarTM with IES (Interpreting Expert System) is presented. This paper also describes as a case study its installation on a Southern African base metals concentrator plant which has demonstrated improved operation, greatly reduced variation in product quality, as well as increased capacity and availability of the circuit.In this case study, the MillStarTMw as installed along with several other enhancements, including hydrocyclone underflow monitoring, product particle size estimation and flotation circuit stabilisation. MillStarTM utilised the particle size measurement to control grind to within 2% of setpoint, all the while ensuring sump level control, density control as well as mill power optimisation. Mintek' s expertise in the modelling of tumbling mills allowed the development of a specialised optimising controller that ensured the mill was kept in the most efficient operating region.MillStarTM augments the automatic control with useful user interface features, such as on-line trends of any logged variables, historic data warehousing and retrieval and production summary reports.A novel feature that distinguishes the MillStarTMi s the IES (Interpreting Expert System). This is a feature of the software that works with the automatic control code to generate explanations for control actions made by the controller. Often complex control systems are mysterious in nature, reducing trust and eventually resulting in them being switched off. Two remediation strategies have been considered to reduce the levels of acidity and dissolved metals in acid mine drainage discharging from Sullivan Mine, West Coast, New Zealand. The oxidising strategy involves adding alkalinity and dissolved oxygen (DO) resulting in the precipitation of metallic oxides and decreased acidity. The reducing strategy involves removing DO, resulting in the precipitation of metallic sulfides, followed by addition of alkalinity to decrease acidity. Field remediation trials indicate a reducing system may be more effective for this site than an oxidising system. A residence time of only two hours in the limestone layer of a successive alkalinity producing system (SAPS) is sufficient to reduce acidity by 100 per cent, iron by 71 per cent, aluminium by 59 per cent, nickel by 38 per cent and manganese by 26 per cent. The proposed remediation plan will likely include a series of SAPS, followed by an anoxic limestone drain, and settling ponds to capture any remaining precipitates.

These may be of interest to members examining the collection of ores, etc., from Mount Lyell, which is a feature of the Victorian Gold Jubilee Exhibition, and may have some value as geological records. No. 7 and No 8 are analyses of samples of footwall rock from the Lyell Tharsis mine. No. 7 is hard, crystalline, fine-grained, and of homogenous structure. It has a dark-red colour, due to ferric oxide (Fig 1); and was taken from a place eight feet east of the ore body and about half way between the 50 feet and 100 feet levels. No. 8 is from the same excavation and from four feet east of the ore body it is softer than No. 7, being easily scratched with a knife-blade, of a deeper dark-red colour, and has a slaty cleavage.
