Most metallic materials are produced from their liquid state. In order to control the properties of industrial products, it is very important to understand their solidification path and the resulting microstructures which can be significantly affected by melt undercooling. High undercooling results in rapid solidification and a refined microstructure with minimal microsegregation. This paper reports on the analysis of rapidly solidified Al-Cu droplets obtained by a single fluid atomization process, Impulse Atomization. A quantitative analysis by Rietveld refinement method of the Neutrons Diffraction data was carried out to determine the fraction of the intermetallic Al2Cu. Knowing the fraction of Al2Cu, the eutectic fractions and corresponding dendritic and eutectic undercoolings were estimated using the metastable extensions of solidus and liquidus lines of the Al-Cu system calculated by Thermo-Calc. In addition to this work, a model of microsegregation coupled with ThermoCalc software via TQ (application programming interface of ThermoCalc) and the Wang-Beckerman model for dendritic growth velocities has been developed for binary alloys. This has led to the development of a phenomenological relationship between primary phase undercooling and initial growth velocity. A comparison of estimated primary undercoolings using a coarsening model with the adiabatic undercoolings for each alloy composition has confirmed that solidification occurs under adiabatic conditions during recalescence.

To reduce U.S. dependence on imports of titanium, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has investigated the recovery of titanium from perovskite (CaTi03). Domestic perovskite deposits represent a significant, but untapped, titanium resource. An acid sulfation method was developed that will extract about 97 pct of the titanium and the columbium and 70 to 90 pct of the rare-earth byproducts from perovskite concentrates. A flow-sheet for recovering titanium as pigment-grade titanium dioxide (Ti02) is discussed. Test work performed in developing each unit operation is described. The first three unit operations have been demonstrated using laboratory-scale continuous methods of operation: acid sulfation of perovskite concentrates, leaching sulfation residue to dissolve metal values, and precipitation of titanium oxysulfate monohydrate (TiOS04?HP) from the resulting leach flltrate. Batch testing of other unit operations was performed: TiOS04?H20 redissolution and iron reduction, precipitation of Ti02 by hydrolysis, and regenerating recoverable acid with rare-earth byproduct recovery. Cost evaluation results are provided, indicating that processing perovskite concentrates by acid sulfation may be an economically viable means of producing Ti02.

The paper presents background information including data on diesel exhaust pollutants, amounts produced and standards, a desscription of mine characteristics that affect air monitoring techniques and a review of portable measurement techniques and instruments for gas and particulate matter sampling. A general review of the laboratory and field research being conducted at Michigan Technological University in the area of diesel emissions is presented. The facilities involved with this research are also described. These are the Experimental Mine, the diesel dilution tunnel test cell, the Mine Air Monitoring Lab (MAML), the portable instruments and the production mines used.

The small party of mining men who formed the original Mount Morgan Syndicate in 1882, commenced operations on the top of the mountain with what were practically nothing more than small hillside quarries, It was not until 1891 that underground stoping began, and open-cut mining therefore commenced with the commencement of operations. This hillside quarrying, however, seems to have been quite haphazard and unsystematic ; there is no trace or sign of any properly devised mining scheme. This can be seen plainly enough from an examination of old mine plans; for in less than five years after stoping was; adopted, the open-cut was down into the stoped-out ground. The Mid-Tennessee Zinc (MTZ) mines, comprised of the Gordonsville, Elmwood, and Cumberland sites, last operated 4 years ago and are undergoing rehabilitation to begin production in 2008. The mines utilize a random room-and-pillar mining method that results in complex ventilation networks. Upon decommissioning, the mechanical ventilation units were removed and disposed of and several shafts sealed. In an effort to re-open the mines and operate in compliance with imminent Mine Safety Health and Administration (MSHA) diesel particulate matter (DPM) regulatory limits of 160TC µg/m3, a new ventilation system was required. The new ventilation system was developed primarily based on the diesel equipment required to meet production. Particular emphasis was placed on the DPM, diesel equipment utilization, main fan sizing, and fan locations to enable the mines to meet MSHA?s ventilation requirements in a cost efficient manner.

Currently, at Caltrans, the Office of Structure Design is carrying out an extensive seismic retrofit program involving transportation structures throughout California. The goal of the retrofit program has been to upgrade existing transportation structures to meet the present seismic codes and anticipated loads that are generated during a seismic event Part of the retrofit program involves retrofitting existing structure foundations when required. To determine if the foundations of a specific structure need to be retrofitted, an engineering analysis of the existing foundations has to be done. If the engineering analysis of the structure foundations determines that the foundations will not meet the load carrying demands required by the structural engineer, the existing foundations are then retrofitted. The retrofit projects that require foundation modifications can be separated into two general cases. The first case comprises structures where the original designs will not meet the demands of the present seismic design code. In this case, the existing foundations are not capable of providing the load capacities the current seismic code requires. The second case consists of structures where the retrofitting of the superstructure will increase the required load carrying capacity of the existing foundations during a seismic event In this case, the anticipated load demands on the existing foundations are greater than the foundations are capable of providing. For either of the cases listed above, the present strategy for increasing the capacity of the existing structure foundation consists of installing tiedown anchors or large capacity piles to provide the required resistance to seisraically induced loads.

The Alpine-Himalayan system, the only major active tectonic belt mainly exposed in a continental mass, is of increasing interest to exploration geologists as well as to theoreticians. Answers to the broader problems of plate tectonics are being sought in this intricate system where the geosynclinal concept was born and where the geotectonic cycle was first applied to metallogeny. The search is all the more intense because it involves scientists from more than a dozen countries with a stimulating variety in perspective. The international Geodynamics Project has allocated the Alpine-Himalayan system to two separate study groups with one directing its attention to the Alpine-Mediterranean region and the other giving consideration to the Himalayan region. This geographic division is accepted in this paper, with remarks being confined to the former and to the west of boundary zone between the European-Asian and the Southeast Asian plates as envisioned by Dewey and Bird (1970). The region is well-mapped in some parts and it includes some of the most intensely-studied geology, most classic mines, and newest orebody discoveries. Within the region, an Alpine-age copper-molybdenum metallogenic belt extends from Rumania to Pakistan. The belt can be considered in terms of plate tectonics, and there is the possibility of using plate tectonics concepts in exploration.

ABSTRACT This paper details the work of RISKGATE, the largest Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) occupational health and safety initiative to date. The program is an interactive online risk management system developed to maximize health and safety performance in the coal mining industry by implementing continuous improvement in managing major unwanted events. The comprehensive knowledge base covers tires, collisions, fires, isolation, strata control underground, ground control open cut, explosions, explosives, manual tasks, and slips/trips/falls. All major Australian coal mining companies contributed topic experts to this broad industry initiative: nine coal mining companies, more than 80 experts, and more than 400 days of individual time for knowledge-capture workshops.

"This report presents the physical properties and related geological and petrographic data of some 84 rock types from operating mines, quarries, or blasting research test sites. These fundamental rock data were collected as a quantitative approach to underground mining problems, blasting research, or other related studies; however, the data are equally applicable to any problem wherein rock characteristics are important factors. Stress-strain curves are given where available, and the standardized procedure for determining elastic constants from static tension tests is described. Computed (laboratory) and measured (field) free-medium velocities are compared in those instances where such data are available. A chart is given showing both the optimum and minimum number of test specimens for the various core sizes employed in the Bureau of Mines standardized physical-property tests. Rock-type, geographical, and geological indexes are included to aid the reader in locating physical-property data in this and previously published Bureau of Mines physical-property reports.INTROD'OCTI ONThis report presents the physical properties of 84 rock types tested from 16 different projects (sections 37-52). SUMMARY: The effects of blasting on structures are assessed on the basis of the maximum amplitudes of the occuring vibration velocities. If the standard values in the German Standard DIN 4150 are not exceeded, damages to structures are not to be expected. The estimation of the maximum vibration amplitudes is usually based on experience or on emperical formulae. However, a comparison of expected with measured values shows that these estimations are not conservative, particulary in case of small distances between blasting locations and structures. More reliable predictions are possible on the basis of numerical analyses, which simulate the three-dimensional propagation of waves with consideration of the geomechanical and geometrical conditions. In addition to the expected velocities, these analyses also allow the determination of stresses resulting from dynamic loading. If the dynamic stresses are known, the effects of blasting on structures can be predicted. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die Auswirkungen sprengbedingter Erschütterungen auf bauliche Anlagen werden in der Praxis auf der Grundlage der Maximalamplituden der auftretenden Schwinggeschwindigkeiten beurteilt. In der DIN 4150 werden Anhaltswerte angegeben, bei deren Einhaltung Schäden von Gebäuden nicht zu erwarten sind. Die Abschätzung dieser Schwing-geschwindigkeiten erfolgt meist auf der Grundlage von Erfahrungswerten oder empirischer Formeln. Der Vergleich der prognostizierten Werte mit Meßergebnissen zeigt jedoch, daß diese Ansätze insbesondere dann, wenn die Abstände zwischen den Sprengorten und den Gebäuden gering sind, nicht konservativ sind. Zuverlässigere Prognosen sind auf der Grundlage von numerischen Berechnungen möglich, in denen die räumliche Ausbreitung von Erschütterungen unter Berücksichtigung der geomechanischen und geometrischen Verhältnisse simuliert wird. Mit derartigen Berechnungen können die zu erwartenden Schwinggeschwindigkeiten und die aus der dynamischen Beanspruchung resultierenden Spannungen ermittelt werden. Although much talked about, social licence to operate (SLTO) is a relatively new concept that has been deemed as one of the four biggest business risks to a mining project over the life-of-mine. There is no accepted single definition of SLTO and this author understands SLTO to be stakeholder perception of the legitimacy of a project, a company or an industry. At a specific site, and across different sites within the same organisation, SLTO ranges through different levels according to stakeholders’ degrees of acceptance in time and space. Management of SLTO is vital for the mining sector but is difficult as it is informal and intangible. Although there are no key performance indicators, there are certain indicators that enable relative measurement of the ‘level’ of the SLTO. Because of the importance of the SLTO, information management during the entire life-of-mine, from exploration to rehabilitation, becomes crucial for the continued operation of a project. The Getchell Mine is located on the east flank of the Osgood Mountain Range in the Potosi Mining District, Humboldt County, NV. Mining in the area first began in 1883 for copper, lead and silver in skarn-related deposits. Tungsten was discovered in the skarns in 1916 and was mined sporadically until 1957. The first major discovery was made in 1933 when two Winnemucca prospectors, Edward Knight and Emmett Chase, found gold at the present site of the Getchell gold mine. In 1934, after a small amount of preliminary prospecting, the claims were purchased by Noble H. Getchell of Midas, NV. The Getchell Mine Inc. was organized and exploration and development work began on a broad scale. Major funding was provided by George Wingfield and investors he assembled. Laxalt described Wingfield’s immediate history prior to his financing of Getchell as follows.

"The United States hat large reserves of titaniferous iron ores that are a potential future source of both iron and titanium. Although it is not now economically feasible to recover iron and titanium metals from these ores, they may become important in times of stress and, in some instances, already have served as a source of pigment-quality titania.The iron- and titanium-bearing constituents of the ores considered in this report are not completely separable from each other by ore-dressing methods, and chemical (or smelting) procedures must be employed. It is im¬portant, therefore, that information be available concerting their reactivities. The most important titanium-bearing constituent is ilmenite (FeTiO3), the thermodynamic properties of which were discussed in a previous publication.3/ The results of thermodynamic studies showed that both hydrogen and carbon monoxide are relatively ineffective reducing agents for the iron in limonite. On the other hand, carbon theoretically is effective at tempera¬tures above 8510C., at which. point the combined equilibrium pressures of CO and CO2 from the reactionsFeTiO3 + C = Fe+ TiO + COand200 = C+ CO2reach 1 atmosphere.This report gives results of small-scale tests of selective reduction by carbon of the iron in titaniferous iron ores, both with and without addition of sodium carbonate. It is shown that the bulk of the iron may be reduced and separated without serious reduction or loss of titanium. Three Wyoming ores, Iron Mountain, Shanton, and Taylor, wore studied. The principal factors investigated were temperature, time, carbon:ore ratio, particle size, and sodium carbon ore ratio.Two methods of investigation were employed. In the first, intimate mixtures of ore and carbon were roasted and the reduced iron and titanium evaluated by leaching with dilute sulfuric acid and analyzing the leach solution (and, in some instances, the dried residues).Twenty grams of ore were mixed thoroughly with carbon and tamped into an alundum thimble having a loosely fitting cover. The thimble and contents were placed in a test-tube end porcelain tube and heated to the desired temperature in a Globar tube furnace. The open end of the porcelain tube was connected to a bubbler containing sulfuric acid, in a manner that permitted complete shut-off of the tube when desired. This allowed removal of the tube from the furnace at the end of the roast period without exposure of the contents to the atmosphere."

Yttrium and rare-earth element. pegmatite dikes are associated with a peralkaline granitic and nephelene syenite complex near Dora Bay on southern Prince of Wales Island. Mineralized dikes were mapped and sampled during USBM investigations in 1987 and 1988. Coarse-grained pegmatite dikes, which emanated as late-stage magmatic fluids from the intrusion, further evolved into vein-dikes and ultimately silica-rich veins. The dikes can be traced up to two miles along a north-south zone. Lithophile elements exhibit a pronounced zonation in vein-dikes and veins that are distal to the Dora Bay complex with increasing values correlating with increasing distance from the complex. The pattern of mineralization suggests very late stage magmatic fluids containing the incompatable lithophile elements were injected into a preexisting north-south fracture zone. REE mineralogy exhibit fine-grained intergrowths of principally thalenite and bastnaesite with lessor monazite and eudialyte. Euxenite contains most of the columbium values and zircon is commonly associated with the dikes. Estimates of inferred and hypothetical resource tonnage range from 1.7 X 1C6 to 8.5 X 106 st for two deposits. Contained RED (including yttrium) averages 0.5 pct and ranges up to 2.0 pct. Deposits are of polymineralic composition and about half of this resource comprises the heavy yttrium subgroup.

This paper describing the mining practices at the Magma mine, Superior, Ariz., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining prac¬tices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts in the United States. At present (1929) practically all the mineral production in the Superior district is from the Magma mine of the Magma Cooper Co. The ore is mined for its copper but contains associated silver and gold. Both direct smelting ore and ore of concentrating grade are produced. The mining methods now in use at the Magma mine were adopted or developed as knowledge was gained of the physical condition of the ore bodies and the inclosing formations; the wall rock is soft and crushed and the ore is relatively hard. In general, existing methods have been adapted to fit local conditions, but some of the mining practices used were originated at this mine. Most of the ore is mined by a combination of rill stopes and pillar stopes. The pillars are extracted by underhand mining.

A case study is presented on the optimization of cable bolting patterns in cut-and-fill stopes at the Chikla Mine, MOIL, India. Rock mass characterization, using Bieniawski’s RMR and Barton’s Q, indicated that the stopes lie in the “no supports required” to “spot bolting required” support categories. In contrast, the current practice of cable bolting in a 2.0 m by 2.0 m grid pattern for stope widths less than 12 m displays different results. Numerical modelling results are in line with the rock mass characterization study. It can be affirmed, as well, that no cable is carrying rock loads greater than 5 t. This fact is derived from observational behaviour of the crown pillar of an experimental stope with open stoping operations and hanging cables in the cut-and-fill stopes of the mine. An increase in the cable bolting grid spacing is, hence, recommended for implementation by mine management, based on the study described in subsequent sections. It is also suggested that the mine adopt the open stoping method, provided results of a rock mechanics instrumentation program in an experimental stope with a cable bolting grid of 2.5 m square are favourable.

"A 2003 paper discussed the idea that as gold mining companies grow larger it becomes more difficult for them to discover or acquire new gold deposits large enough to replace extracted reserves on an annual basis. Deposits of the size required to replace annual production of very large gold producers (VLGPs) are statistically few. An update in 2005 reviewed VLGPs with respect to production, reserves, and reserve life and observed recent changes in the gold mining industry. Now, more than 12 years later, this paper explores how those VLGPs have fared and how the gold mining industry has changed. Profiled on these pages are the eight RMCMI 1996 Scholarship Award winners. All eight winners were present as guests of the Institute at the June convention in Durango, Colorado. Each received recognition at the Institute Awards Luncheon Monday, July 1. 1996. Each state vice president sewed as the host for the collegiate winner and his firm provided travel and hotel expenses. In addition to receiving a plaque from the Scholarship Chairman, Alan Czarnowsky, each winner receives $1,000 tuition credit for the coming academic year, as well as transportation hotel lodging and meals at convention as guests of the Institute. Because this is a continuing award, the winners from the previous year also receive a $1.000 tuition credit in their senior year if recommended by the dean of the college or university and are full time students. A resident from each of the eight RMCMI member states is selected from among Board approved institutions. Criteria for these awards to be made in the spring annually is that the recipient (1) Is a full time sophomore student who will use the tuition credit during the junior year. (2) Be both a U.S. citizen and a resident of the member state. (3) Maintain good academic standing, be pursuing a degree in a mining related field and have an expressed interest in western coal as a possible career path. The scholarship program includes curricula other than in the mining departments, but in engineering disciplines, such as geology, mineral processing and metallurgy. New Mexico Michelle Lisa Begaye plans to work in a mine near her Navajo Reservation after graduation. She would like to continue teaching the young in her community as she has been doing for the past few years. As a volunteer with the Natani' Trails, she takes at-risk students on wilderness experiences such as rafting, repelling, etc. Active in school, she played the trombone, was in speech and drama, played softball, and was the first female to play football as a right and left tackle. A member of National Honor Society in High Shool, she also made the Dean's List at Navajo Community College. Michelle will pursue a degree in Environmental Engineering when she transfers to New Mexico Tech this fall. [ ] COLORADO WINNER Nicole Albert Colorado School of Mines - Golden. Colorado Nicole is pursuing a BS in Mining Engineering with a Minor in Mineral Economics - and has already proven her serious intent with her many activities related to mining. She is a member of the Society of Women Engineers; Society of Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration; and has participated in two different projects related to mining, one of which was to clean up a mine tailings site. Nicole enjoys hunting, camping, fishing, softball and horses. Growing up with her father, working at a surface coal mine, sparked her interest in this industry.
