"Raw materials industry is crucial for national economy. German mining companies are known for their high degree of resource efficiency based on modern technology and know how. K+S is one of the world’s leading suppliers of standard and specialty fertilizers. In the salt business, K+S, with sites in Europe as well as North and South America, is the world’s leading producer. The mine sites of K+S are distributed all over the world producing mainly potash and magnesium salts and rock salt. Focus is on the sustainable use of the natural deposits in order to stay competitive. For this reason a raw material policy, both national and international, is necessary to ensure access to new mineable deposits which are still available in Germany. Further on, knowing market conditions is a must for sustainable development. At least sustainability and resource efficiency in potash and rock salt mining are achieved by constantly developing new technologies as well as optimizing the organization and improving qualification of workers."

This Bureau of Mines report presents two phases of a research program to evaluate a single-entry system for longwall development. Organizations participating in the program; which began in July 1971, include the Bureau of Mines, the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration, and the University of Utah, working under a cooperative agreement with Kaiser Steel Corp. at its Sunnyside mine in Utah. Part 1 of this report describes the present longwall mining practice, including a brief history, and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of a single-entry development system and its introduction in the United States. Part 2 of the report presents the research program; test design, instrumentation for ground and support evaluation, and the test results from the No. 2 mine. Subsequent reports will describe the research conducted in the No. 1 mine.

The epithermal Au-Ag deposits of the Hauraki Goldfield have formed in the convergent plate margin setting of the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The deposits form as siliceous lodes in the upper parts of geothermal systems associated with andesitic and rhyolitic volcanism. Two types of low sulphidation epithermal mineralisation are recognised in these volcanic terranes. Vein deposits within the rhyolitic terrane in the east and south of the CVZ (Whitianga Province) are typified by Chalcedonic Silica-Adularia-Illite type mineralisation. The veins are hosted by both rhyolite-dacite volcanic rocks and the underlying andesitic basement. The mineralisation formed by episodic violent decompressional boiling of deeply circulating meteoric water, with some magmatic fluid contribution; this boiling was associated with hydraulic fracturing and hydrothermal eruptions in geothermal systems where the piezometric surface of the deep geothermal reservoir lay near-surface. Such episodic boiling provides chalcedonic veining, banding and brecciation textures, adularia stability, bladed calcite, and extreme loss of H2S gas from the fluid to cause major gold deposition.   Crystalline Quartz-Illite-(Adularia-Kaolinite) type mineralisation is widespread in the andesitic terrane forming the northern and western portions of the CVZ (Kuaotunu Province). There is a spatial association with weak mineralisation of the high sulphidation (Vuggy Silica-Alunite-Kaolinite-Illite) epithermal type and porphyry eu-Au type. Crystalline Quartz mineralisation is probably formed by the mixing of shallow acidic groundwaters with the ascending deep geothermal fluid in geothermal systems beneath andesitic stratovolcanoes. The piezometric surface to the deep geothermal reservoir in these systems is likely to lie at considerable depth, with acidic gases rising from the geothermal reservoir condensing within the overlying vadose zone. The cooling effect, oxidation and pH decrease accompanying mixing apparently overcomes the dilution effect, and results in quartz deposition, illite (and locally kaolinite) alteration, and precipitation of gold. A high level of base-metal sulphide precipitation also enhances gold deposition. Violent boiling of the mixing fluids may occur at local structural dilation sites, producing high grade "bonanza" gold mineralisation.

Cette présentation décrit les étapes de développement et l?exploitation souterraine au puits Penna chez Agnico-Eagle division Laronde. Les sujets suivants sont touchés : le fonçage du puits, le développement des niveaux, la méthode d?exploitation, la manutention de la roche brisée, le méthode de remblayage et la ventilation. En résumé : le fonçage du puits s?est fait sur 2,240 mètres de novembre 1995 à mars 2000. Le développement des niveaux a débuté en octobre 1998. Les opérations de minage ont débutés en août 99 dans le premier horizon situé au dessus du niveau 122. Les chantiers sont exploités par longs-trous d?environ 25 mètres de long avec un diamètre de 10 cm. Les accès à la zone minéralisée sont transverses. Le minerai est soutiré des chantiers et acheminé au passe-minerai a l?aide de chargeuses navettes. Par la suite, le minerai passe sur un marteau, est concassé et transporté sur un convoyeur, jusqu?au silo de 4,500 tonnes au-dessus de la station de chargement automatisée du niveau 152 d?ou les skips sont alimentés. Le remblai en pâte est envoyé de la surface par des trous ayant un revêtement d?acier. Le diamètre intérieur est de 15 cm. Le réseau de ventilation est principalement alimentée par des ventilateurs de surface (système aspirant et souflant) conçus pour acheminer sous-terre un maximum de 640 mètres cubes par minutes (1,350,000 pcm).

The primary objectives of this project are (1) the determination of manpower demand in primary lead and zinc production for the years 1985 and 2000, and (2) the estimation of the availability of the required manpower for these years. In order to meet the first of these objectives relationships between employee requirements and metal production in the various states were established, The total primary lead and zinc production from United states mines in 1985 and 2000 has been predicted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. These forecasts and the 1974 figures are as follows: [1974 1985 2000 Lead metal, tons 669,000 700,000 900,000 Zinc metal, tons 494,000 585,000 995,000] Mining By analysis of ore reserve data and industry characteristics, the authors estimated the portion of the primary production which each state would yield in the future years. As manpower requirements are determined by the tons of ore produced and by worker productivity, these figures were determined for each mining state and district by developing relationships between lead and zinc metal production, ore production, ore to recoverable metal ratios, employee productivity, and number of employees required. The number of new employees required annually to compensate for attrition and production growth is provided, also.

The Main Seam occurs in two 'pods', termed North and South, separated by an east-west oriented 'want' zone (most probably a palaeo-channel). The seam on either side of the 'want' area reaches thicknesses of over 30 metres but the North Main Seam adjacent to the 'want' zone has been split into multiple seams of 10 to 15 m thickness. Rock types in the inter-burden of this area are characterised by inter-bedded sandstones and carbonaceous mudstones varying in thickness from 0.5 to 5 m. In the South Main Seam, an area of un-split coal exists and is characterised by few inorganic partings. Overburden in this area varies geographically from relatively thick mudstones in the south and east part of the coal deposit to inter-bedded sandstones and carbonaceous mudstones adjacent to the 'want' area. The sandstone/mudstone overburden probably represents a splay or splay-channel complex emanating from the larger 'want' area palaeo-channel. Modelling lithological variability is of use because it is one of the factors used in predicting cavability and roof support system design. The coal in both the north and south deposits were found to exhibit highly predictable quality and breakage parameters in relation to the coal geometry. Although ash yield and sulphur are mostly low and not variable, volatile matter and thus fixed carbon, varied in relation to seam thickness. In general, volatile matter (dat) decreased and moisture increased with decreasing seam thickness whereas moisture increased with decreasing seam thickness. In addition to these parameters it was found that the energy needed to crush the coal was lowest at the top and bottom of the seam and, on a whole seam basis, decreased with seam thickness. All of these parameters were found to vary in relation to the vitrain band content of the coal which itself was controlled by seam geometry. These parameters can therefore be modelled and inputted into mining plans and quality control operations.

The industrial minerals industry in the Atlanta, Ga., area was studied in order to better understand problems associated with exploiting mineral resources in and near metropolitan areas. A method for delineating the Atlanta urban area and its component parts was developed so that the factors affecting the location of the minerals industry could be viewed mere objectively in the urban context. Major attention is focused on the area's dominant crushed stone subindustry Demographic and socioeconomic analysis of the Atlanta, Ga., area shows that expansion of the metropolis and its environs will probably eliminate potential mineral resources from the mineral resource base in the area, and that the expanding metropolis will be the primary determinant of future mining sites. Competition for land is accentuated to varying degrees by the incompatibility of wining operations with residential and other environmental requirements. Areas of consideration are suggested to provide maximum development of land and resources for greatest economic benefits it minimum social cost. Further research is recommended to determine market locations in urban areas, optimum operating levels for industrial minerals plants, and alternatives to surface mining.

ABSTRACT: When considering the rock stress component of rock mechanics design, the basic procedure is to consider the pre-existing stress-state in the rock mass and then estimate the disturbance to this stress state as a result of engineering excavation. Failure criteria are applied to the final stress state to establish whether failure will occur. However, during the evolution of the stress state, the failure locus may be reached before the anticipated failure state and, in this case, failure will occur unexpectedly. This indicates that the complete stress path (defined as the variations in magnitudes and orientations of the stress tensor components resulting from engineering-induced or natural changes) must be considered. We list a set of stress path principles with their corollaries and then introduce a new and powerful method for simultaneously illustrating changes in the six independent components of the stress tensor. This method plots the magnitudes of the principal stresses above their orientational paths on the hemispherical projection, to provide a three-dimensional stress path locus for each of the three principal stress components. In connection with this presentational device, we illustrate a number of concepts associated with the stress path in rock engineering. For example, we show how the minor principal stress approaches zero at an unsupported excavation face, the interchange of the trajectories of two principal stresses when their magnitudes become equal, and the influence of the bounds on the principal stresses given by strength criteria. RESUME: Si on s’interesse à la composante “contrainte” lors d’un dimensionnement en mécanique des roches, la méthode de base consiste à considérer l’état de contrainte pré-existant dans le massif rocheux, puis d’estimer la perturbation à cet état générée par l’excavation projetée. Des critères de rupture sont appliqués à l’état de contrainte final pour établir si une rupture va se produire. Cependant, lors de l’évolution de l’état de contrainte, la surface critique peut être atteinte ce qui provoquera une rupture anticipée et, dans ce cas, cette dernière sera inattendue. Cela indique que le chemin de contrainte complet (défini par les variations de l’intensité et de l’orientation des composantes du tenseur des contraintes liées à des causes anthropiques ou naturelles) doit être pris en compte. Nous présentons un ensemble de règles pour les chemins de contraintes ainsi que leurs corollaires et, ensuite, nous introduisons une méthode, nouvelle et puissante, pour présenter simultannement les changements des six composantes du tenseur des contraintes. Cette méthode consiste à tracer l’intensité des contraintes principales sur le chemin d’orientation des contraintes à l’aide d’une projection hémisphérique afin d’obtenir le lieu, en trois dimensions, de chaque contrainte principale. En relation avec cet outil de représentation, nous illustrons certains concepts associés au chemin de contrainte en ingénierie au rocher. Par exemple, nous montrons comment la contrainte mineure tend vers zero à la surface d’une excavation sans soutenement, le changement de direction des deux contraintes principales quand leur intensité deviennent égales, et l’influence des conditions aux limites sur les contraintes fournies par un critère de rupture. Kriterien fuer das Versagen werden im letzten Stadium, des Stress Zustandes angewendet, um zu erfahren ob ein Versagen wohl eintreten wird. Es ist jedoch zu beachten, dass waehrend des Stress Aufbaus ein oertliches Versagen eintreten kann, welches vor dem eigentlichen, erwarteten Versagens Zustand auftritt. Diese Moeglichkeit weist darauf hin, dass der gesammte “Stress Path” (definiert durch die Variationen der Stress Tensor Komponenten in Richtung und Groesse, hervorgerufen durch ingenieurmaessig hervorgerufene oder natuerlich Vorgaenge) betrachtet werden muss. Wir fuehren eine Liste der “Stress Path” Prinzipien auf und stellen dann eine neue und wirksame Methode zur gleichzeitigen Darstellung der sechs unabhaegigen Komponenten des Stress Tensors vor. Diese Methode stellt die Groesse der “Principal Stresses” in Abhaengigkeit von ihrem rauemlichen Weg auf einer hemispherischen Projektion dar und erlaubt hiermit eine drei dimensionale Darstellung fuer jeden Ort des “Stress Path’s” in die drei Haupt Stress Komponenten. Im Zusammenhang mit der hier gegebenen Darstellungsart, verdeutlichen wir eine Reihe von Konzepten in der Felsmechanik. Centre Jardin Lac Pelletier (CJLP) has been a leading actor in the revitalisation of closed mining sites in northern Québec for over 20 years. Over that period, CJLP developed a cost-efficient technique that transforms sterile mining residue into a substrate able to support a resilient ecosystem. Using a unique mix of organic matter, fertilisers and selected plant species, this technique rapidly builds a microorganic fauna and a layer of humus that will sustain the creation of vegetation coverage. The coverage is composed of over 13 different plant species, each having a unique role in the development of a resilient ecosystem, from soil stabilisation to nitrogen fixing. Considerably less expensive than traditional methods using civil engineering techniques, it does not require the use of heavy machinery or the spread of topsoil. This technique has been successfully used to restore over 20 sites in Québec such as Joutel, Yvan Vézina and Louvicourt. It is a proven technique that has passed the test of actual implementation. The presentation will review the biological, production and economic aspects of the technique through the revitalisation of the Joutel site.

To reduce fuel consumption in industrial and commercial fuel-burning plants throughout the Nation, cooperative efforts of thousands of individuals are required. These individuals are scattered over the country and hold various positions in thousands of independent establishments. To accomplish as much as possible on this problem during the Second World War, it was decided that personal contact with fuel users was absolutely necessary; publicity, although an important factor, could not by itself give satisfactory and needed results. It was planned to have qualified engineers visit commercial establishments to go over with them the problem of reducing their fuel consumption. The specific plan, toward which all efforts aimed and around which the rest of the program revolved, consisted in brief of 1. Conference of visiting engineer with management to obtain cooperation. 2. Appointment by management of a plant employee as fuel "waste chaser." 3. Work of engineer with "waste chaser" and, if appropriate, with plant operators on most efficient operation of equipment.

This report presents results of a U.S. Bureau of Mines study of longwall gob material. The objective of this work was to determine material stiffness properties of the gob for use in numerical models of rock mass response to longwall mining. Photographs of actual mine gob were digitized to obtain approximate particle size gradations of gob material. The gradation curve was shifted down to a lab- oratory scale, and 20 uniaxial compression tests were conducted. Varying the maximum particle size was not found to affect the stress-strain behavior, but changing the gradation appeared to influence the stress-strain behavior. The stress-strain relationship of the simulated gob material was nonlinear, the stress-secant-modulus relationship, was approximately linear, and the stress-tangent-modulus relationship was approximately a second-order polynomial function. Equations were generated from these curves, providing numerical modelers with a means to estimate gob moduli based on the stress level. In addition, the experimental data were statistically evaluated using multiple regression analyses, producing a series of equations to predict the secant and tangent moduli from the given stress level, bulking factor, rock strength, and thickness-to-width shape ratio of the particles.

Introduction The mining industry has long been associated with a high incidence of low back disorders and pain (Klein et al. 1984, Leigh and Sheetz 1989, Brinckmann et al. 1998). It is believed that the higher incidence of these injuries among miners is the result of high exposures to postural demands, heavy manual work, and exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV). Recent work has indicated that miners involved with heavy lifting (especially in restricted spaces or on uneven ground) or who have been exposed to whole-body vibration in undamped seats experience noticeable changes in their spines that are consistent with degeneration of the intervetebral discs of the spine (Brinckmann et al. 1998). As will be described shortly, there is mounting evidence that disc degeneration plays a large role in the development of low back pain, particularly chronic back pain. Until fairly recently, medical doctors generally assumed that back pain was the result of muscle strain, ligament pain, or so-called “trigger points” (Bogduk, 1997). However, research supporting these mechanisms of pain has been very scant. When subjected to scientific scrutiny, none of these mechanisms has been shown to relate to back pain in a convincing manner. On the other hand, there are three mechanisms that have been shown to be highly associated with back pain in controlled scientific studies: sacroiliac pain (present in 13% of back pain sufferers) (Maigne et al. 1996), facet joint pain (present in 15 % of back pain sufferers) (Schwarzer et al 1994), and disc disruption and degeneration (present in 39% of chronic back pain sufferers) (Moneta et al. 1994). The latter mechanism, which bears the highest relationship to back pain that has been objectively demonstrated, will be the focus of this section. Scientists now believe they have a good idea how back pain may develop in cases involving disc disruption and degeneration (Bogduk 1997). As the spine experiences loading during lifting tasks or whole body vibration, the first structure to fail is called the vertebral endplate, which is a structure that attaches the disc of the spine to the vertebral body (Figure 1). The endplate typically experiences a fracture, which the body will attempt to heal by means of scar tissue. Unfortunately, this scar tissue impedes the flow of nutrition to the disc itself (discs are dependent on nutrition from the vertebral bones), and if the supply is reduced sufficiently, the disc will start to degenerate. As this degeneration process proceeds, fissures or tears in the fibers of the disc start to develop. If any of these tears is a grade 3 fissure (Figure 2), an inflammatory response occurs in the disc, which will lead to the well-known sensation of low back pain (Peng 2006).

Within the metal/nonmetal mining sector, fall-related incidents account for a large proportion of fatal and non-fatal injuries. However, the events and contributing factors leading up to these incidents have not been fully investigated. To help provide a clearer picture of these factors, an analysis of imminent danger orders issued by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) between 2010 and 2017 at both surface and underground metal/nonmetal mine sites revealed that most orders are associated with fall risks. Of these cases, 84% involved the workers not using fall protection, fall protection not being provided, or the improper use of fall protection. Fall risks for workers most frequently occurred when standing on mobile equipment, performing maintenance and repairs on plant equipment, or working near highwalls. In most cases, a single, basic, corrective action (e.g., using fall protection) would have allowed workers to perform the task safely. Overall, these findings suggest that a systematic approach is needed to identify, eliminate, and prevent imminent danger situations. Furthermore, to protect mineworkers from falls from height, frequently performed tasks requiring fall protection should be redesigned to eliminate the reliance on personal fall protection.

Current dynamic testing practice to obtain pile total capacity will not yield optimum capacity due to the strain incompatibility between the side and tip resistances during driving. Superposition of end of initial drive- static tip capacity and the peak static skin capacity during beginning of restrike and adding them is the preferred method. The FDOT method determines independent pile static tip and skin capacities in real time analyzing appropriate blows from the embedded tip and top data of the Embedded Data Collectors (EDC). This data is collected through a wireless radio transmitter, receiver, and laptop software. The approach utilizes EDC tip and top data and nonlinear single degree of freedom system to satisfy force and energy equilibrium with a global genetic inversion analysis. Top impacted energy equals at pile tip as sum of Static, Damping and Inertial energy providing independent tip resistance. With EDC sensors as boundary conditions, pile is divided into desired segments and using global inversion techniques one dimensional equation is solved for independent skin friction for every blow. EDC data compared close static load test results. The EDC - FDOT method has enabled cost effective 100% testing of driven piles cost effective. INTRODUCTION Historical documentation has shown that not only driven piles have a long history of usage but also continues to advance unceasingly till today. Historians placed the first pile driving using timber piles in the 4th century BC. While modern pile driving systematically started around nineteenth century, the credit for conceiving the idea of the applicability of wave equation to driven piles goes to David Victor Isaccs of Australia. His 1931publication “Concrete Pile Driving Formulae” provides the basis for modern pile driving using stress wave theory. He felt that the dynamic formulae then in use lacked the capability of detecting integrity and hence developed stress wave theory. This work was further developed starting in 1938 by W.H. Glanville and colleagues of British Building Research Board as they developed the first solution to the wave equation. But these early efforts have really taken off only with the advent of computers. E.A.L. Smith (1960) published ‘Pile Driving Analysis with the Wave Equation’ and provided first numerical solution to the wave equation. Within few years, the FHWA funded research and in due course this effort ushered the era of externally instrumented pile driving.

"Abstract Uncertain strength, deformation and flow properties in dry deep mixing columns often lead to conservative choices concerning design values where the design is regularly complemented with a surcharge fill. The surcharge not only leads to increased cost but also to logistical problems where the surcharge is a physical obstacle. The deformation properties of a ground improvement were studied by means of two small embankment load tests. The settlement measurements were also used in FEM analyses, where the effect of surcharge on creep settlements was investigated. Based on the results, the effects of the surcharge were considered negligible and could safely be ignored. The project is an example how the contractor can use a field test as an effective design approach.IntroductionGround improvement of soft soils with dry deep mixing columns, or lime-cement columns, is often combined with a surcharge fill. The main reason for using a surcharge is to force the primary settlement and some of the secondary settlement that would have occurred under the final embankment height alone, to take place under the surcharge loading. Another reason is to level out uneven settlements. Strength and deformation properties in improved soil cannot be sufficiently assessed in advance, before columns have been tested on-site, and this uncertainty often lead to conservative choices concerning design values. In order to compensate for a slow forecasted consolidation process, the design is regularly complemented with a surcharge. The surcharge not only leads to increased cost but also to logistical problems where the surcharge is a physical obstacle.Extensive research undertaken by Åhnberg (2006, 2007) shows, by means of triaxial and oedometer tests, that cementation processes and a load acting on the columns during hardening, makes the improved soil to behave as a heavily over-consolidated soil due to an increase in quasi pre-consolidation pressure. The effects of using a surcharge on the time for consolidation and creep properties are thus probably small, since the stress level does not normally exceed this quasi pre-consolidation pressure. A study presented by Venda Oliveira et al. (2013) shows that the stress level within small ranges has limited effect on the creep properties.This paper presents a case study where the deformation properties of a ground improvement using dry deep mixing columns was investigated by load tests on two small test embankments. The tests were performed at the Interchange Värtan project site, which is part of the Norra länken infrastructure project in Stockholm. The tests were not performed as a research project but simple load tests performed by the contractor with the purpose of rationalizing the design delivered by the client. One purpose of the load tests was to assess the deformations when the columns are loaded temporarily by overlaying concrete works. Another purpose was to provide some input data to a study of the effects of using surcharge on creep settlements. The analysis was conducted as finite element modeling using the commercial code PLAXIS, where creep settlements can be simulated using the built-in Soft Soil Creep model."

"In modem concentrators, the operation of flotation machines is often stabilized by simple control loops. Froth level, slurry density and aeration rate are all physical parameters typically controlled through classical PID loops. Few concentrators, however make use of advanced computing technologies for controlling the grade of flotation product streams. Technical challenges such as long process delay and the long and uneven sampling interval of on-stream XRF analyzers often restrain their implementation. Model Predictive Control (MPC) is known to have better performance than PID for controlling processes with long delays (such as flotation circuits). This paper describes the implementation of a multi-input/single-output (MISO) MPC algorithm and an FIR model identification routine using an object-oriented graphical computing environment.The MPC module (controller and identification) was implemented on an industrial control system and applied to many sulfide flotation circuits in the Brunswick Mining concentrator (New Brunswick, Canada). In most cases, the manipulated variable was the collector addition. As long as it is provided with decent process models, the performance of the MPC controller is good on all the flotation circuits on which it was applied. Significant reductions of grade variance are reported and the controller responds well to set-point changes. The user-friendly, graphical nature of the computing environment led to a high degree of acceptance by both the process engineers and the flotation operators.1. The introduction of instruments such as pulp density gauges and cell level probes was particularly well received by the plants where pneumatic and electronic controllers were available for implementing PID control loops. Involving all members of your staff who will he using the new computer in the planning phase is also important. Their participation will alleviate any potential concerns they may have about new equipment, and their suggestions will provide valuable input for your specifications. After you define your proposed system, survey available hardware and software. The survey will help you in the next step, preparation of specifications. The specifications, along with a quote request, are then sent to various manufacturers. Consider the Manufacturer When selecting your minicomputer, one important item to consider is the manufacturer. Remember, when you buy a computer, you're also buying the services of a computer company. A firm that makes a commitment to its customers and provides a product that is field tested before releasing it for sale is preferable. Examine the company's maintenance and support packages, since every machine requires preventive maintenance. Does your manufacturer or original equipment manufacturer (OEM) support service sites in your area? Has their service record been commendable? Will they provide training for your personnel and a supply of circuit boards so you can retain a degree of self-service autonomy? Three methods of buying a computer involve the manufacturer, an OEM, and the systems house. Buying direct from the manufacturer means you go straight to the source, using no middleman. This gives you maximum flexibility; you can consider every alternative and many possible combinations of computers, peripherals, and software until you find exactly the right system for you. The OEM buys computers direct from the manufacturer and builds them into his own computerized, special purpose product. He usually sells a complete package, including software and hardware, and often noncompetitive equipment as well (a scientific or engineering instrument, for example), designed for the mining market. Because he offers a packaged product, the OEM can often charge less for the system than if you put the pieces together yourself. In many ways, the OEM also provides a unique system. And while the OEM sells a packaged solution, he also usually has the special market knowledge necessary to modify the system to meet your unique needs, if necessary.

Despite enormous efforts over the last decades there are still many unanswered questions with respect to calculation and modeling of the blast process using appropriate physical laws. Most calculations of explosive charges of a blast design are based on experience, empirical observations or blasting theories with serious shortcomings. This paper presents a new theory for the design and calculation of a rock blast that is based on the momentum. It offers a clear-cut method for the calculation of blast processes. The theoretical results will be compared with on-site measurements by means of a newly developed strain sensor and further measuring equipment. The momentum theory helps better to explain physically the processes of a blast. On the basis of long-term statistical investigations a momentum balance can be carried out with the volume-based blasting momentum and the measurable momentum associated with the muckpile and the remaining rock mass. This type of consideration requires a complex procedure which includes the blastability of the rock masses. Realis tic strain measurements open a new interpretation possibility and judgment criteria for the most probable building damage, the dynamic impact on general types of buildings and also for the blast process itself. The blast-induced stress and the momentum generated could be back-calculated using a geophone profile and the strain sensor. The strain owing to a dynamic impact can be influenced by the changing of the drill-, blast- and shotfiring technique like the until now measured vibration velocity. In this way it is possible today to make a complex preparation, calculation and evaluation of blasts. The new techniques of measuring in connection with the momentum theory bring about an increase of the safety and a clearcut method of improving the blast processes. This procedure offers new possibilities for the precise calculation, simulation and modelling of blasts and resulting vibrations and leads to an increase of the safety as well as economic adaptation of the drill-, blast- and shotfiring techniques to a pre-determined blasting result.
